In this episode, we explore how emotions can be understood and expressed through the concept of a “palate” and how we are the architects of our emotional world. Just as food flavors—salty, sweet, spicy, or bland—can shape our culinary experience, our emotions can be visualized and better understood by using the language of taste. Here’s what we dive into:

Transforming Taste into Emotion: We discuss how anger might feel “salty” or “spicy,” while enjoyment may be “sweet,” and calmness “mellow.” By turning the physical palate into an emotional one, we gain a relational tool to connect with our feelings.

Building Our Inner World: Drawing on Erwin Schrödinger’s insights and Lisa Feldman Barrett’s theory of constructed emotions, we examine how each of us creates a unique “model” of the world inside our minds, shaped by sensory inputs, memories, and life experiences. This model forms the blueprint for how we interpret and respond to the world around us.

Avoiding Emotional Ruts: We explore the importance of breaking free from the extremes of “loving everything” or “hating everything.” Instead, refining our emotional palate helps us pinpoint more nuanced feelings, allowing us to avoid emotional ruts and build resilience.

Empathy and Its Boundaries: Empathy can be powerful, but in excess, it may lead to “empathy-induced altruism.” We explore how to balance empathy with compassion and select the emotional “flavor” that best fits the situation.

Architecture of the Self: Using the metaphor of architecture, we discuss how we are all beautiful works in progress, constantly constructing and reconstructing ourselves. Embracing our “inner architect” allows us to better design how we experience our world.

Throughout the episode, we touch on the importance of seeing emotions as recipes we create using our unique ingredients. Tune in to learn how to savor your emotional journey, build self-awareness, and embrace your ever-evolving inner masterpiece.
