(00:00):
Did you know that laughterhas health benefits?

(00:03):
Yep.
According to the MayoClinic online, laughter
reduces stress and tension.
It can boost yourimmune system and mood.
And over time, laughtercan even lessen pain.
I mean, there's some truthin that saying about laughter
being the best medicine!Welcome to FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®.

(00:30):
I'm Karli Newman, your favoriteGenX dealer of positive
vibes, community builder andlife and wellness coach for
women in midlife and beyond.
I love it when you join me here! This is the fourth episode
in a series of five tohelp you capture the feel
good soul lifting vibesof the summer season.
So far, we've tapped intoplayfulness, boosted our
joy, and created adventure.

(00:52):
Today?
You guessed it.
We're busting a gut.
In my July 23rd email,I promised to help you
see humor and laughteras a form of self-care.
So here are my thoughts.
Based on the benefits thatI listed at the top of the
episode, I believe that seekingthe mood boosting benefits of
laughter is an act of self-love.
And self-love is self-careFinding the things that make

(01:15):
you laugh - big, hard crylaughs or just the little
giggles you experience whensomething funny comes your way.
All of it, myfriend, is self-care.
We do not laugh often enough.
Think about it.
When is the last time youhad the biggest laugh where

(01:36):
you couldn't stop laughing?
Where tears were streaming down, where your stomach was hurting
and your cheeks were sore fromlaughing and smiling so much?
When is the last time thatyou had that kind of a laugh?
That my friend is the stressrelease tool that helps you
experience those benefits.

(01:58):
Releasing stress, releasingtension in your body that you're
holding onto, and you probablydon't even notice that you are.
So why not be intentional aboutadding more of it to your life?
It is self-care.
Those times when you're feelingstressed, when you're feeling,
wound up, seek out laughter.
Add that to yourwellness toolbox.

(02:20):
Self-care doesn't alwayscome in big giant boxes.
A lot of times it comesin very small packages and
so do laughter and humor.
On the other end of the spectrumof that endless laugh-cry
fest are the little thingsthat just make you smile.
They might catch yourattention, they might

(02:40):
catch you out of the blue.
It might be something that youknow you can pull out and look
at, pull up on your phone, andyou know that it is going to
make you smile and it might evenmake you chuckle a little bit.
The subtly funny things thatmake you smile and laugh are
self-care too, my friend.
Even if it's a fleetingmoment of 15 seconds.

(03:04):
Self-care doesn't have tobe an hours long event.
So think about it my friend, those plans to connect with
your funny friend, check outa standup comedy show, rewatch
a movie that has always madeyou laugh and gets you going
every time you see thosecertain scenes, all of it falls
under the self-care umbrella.
I think it's pretty amazingto think about something

(03:27):
like laughing and humor andhow I find laughter in my
life qualifies as self-care.
It's a wellness tool, and whatmight change for you, if you
start to view it in that light?
How might that little bitof extra effort help you
feel better in your body, inyour mind, and in your soul?

(03:48):
Send me an email, my friend.
Tell me how you plan topractice self-care through
laughter and humor.
For me?
I'm enjoying a short girlstrip with two longtime friends
who always get me laughing.
It's pretty much guaranteedthat my cheeks and core
muscles will be sore afterour three days together.
If you want a refresheron ways to notice, nurture
and practice adding morelaughter into your life,

(04:10):
revisit your July 23rd email.
