Through the story of Karrie, who faced a tough decision between a promising job opportunity and awaiting cancer biopsy results, Laura explains the importance of a growth mindset, discovering personal strengths, and thinking outside the box.

Laura (00:02):
When life corners you with two bad options, there's
almost always a third onewaiting for you to see it.
Welcome to the Flourishing AfterAdversity podcast.
I'm your host, Laura MangumBroome, Resilience Coach and
author of Flourishing AfterAdversity: A 3-step Action Plan
to Transform Pain into Purposeand Embrace Joy Again.

(00:25):
If you've been knocked down bylife, through loss, illness, or
unexpected change, you're in theright place.
Here we talk about how to movefrom surviving to thriving, one
hopeful step at a time.
In today's episode, we're divinginto a topic that every listener
will face at some point.

(00:45):
What do you do when both choicesin front of you feel wrong?
By the end of this episode, you'll know how to find what
Stephen Covey calls the thirdalternative, that creative
life-giving option, hidingbetween yes and no.
But first, if your thoughts havebeen spinning in circles lately,

(01:05):
I have a free resource to helpyou calm the noise.
It's called Reframe the Spiral, five Quick Coping Strategies to
Shift Negative Thoughts andReclaim your Day.
They're the same tools I usewhen I feel stuck, and they'll
help you find your footing too.
You can grab it using the linkin the show notes.

(01:27):
Karrie sat at her desk staringat a blank job application.
An ideal teaching position hadjust opened up the kind she'd
waited years for, but in thesame week, she was waiting on
breast cancer biopsy resultsthat would determine if she
needed a lumpectomy or chemo andradiation treatments if I apply

(01:49):
and get the job she told me.
I might have to quit, but if Idon't apply, I'll lose the
income I desperately need.
It felt like an impossiblechoice until she discovered
there was another way.
Most of us have moments likeKarrie's where life splits into
two hard paths.

(02:10):
Do you stay or leave?
Push forward or pull back?
Say yes or no.
That kind of either or thinkingtraps us.
It keeps us afraid to choose, afraid to lose, and unable to
move forward.
Stephen Covey calls this a falsedilemma when both options feel

(02:33):
wrong because we're lookingthrough the wrong lens.
His answer is the thirdalternative.
It's not my way or your way,it's a new way.
It's not about compromise.
It's about creation.
When you feel trapped, yourbrain goes into control mode.

(02:53):
If I pick this, I lose that, butthat fear limits your vision.
Real resilience starts when youask.
What else could be possiblehere?
Using myiCope2Hope ResilienceFramework.
Karrie began to see newpossibilities.
Step one, develop a growthmindset to conquer change.

(03:16):
She stopped assuming there wasonly one right answer instead of
I can't.
She asked, what can I do rightnow?
Step two, discover yoursuperpowers.
To overcome challenges, Karriewas creative.
She painted restored furnitureand crafted outdoor decor.

(03:36):
Those weren't just hobbies, theywere resources or what I like to
call superpowers.
Step three, think outside thebox to uncover opportunities.
Instead of choosing betweenapplying or waiting, she found a
third path.
She asked about a substituteteaching role at the same

(03:58):
school, flexible enough to fitaround whatever the treatment
she needed and she couldcontinue working her other
part-time job.
She started researching aYouTube channel to teach art and
crafts and to inspire others Forthe first time in weeks, her
face lit up.
She realized she didn't have tochoose between healing or

(04:21):
purpose.
That's the heart of the thirdalternative, hope through
creativity.
Covey's next insight is aboutsynergy.
He says it starts with threeinner shifts.
I see myself, I see you.
I seek you out.
Finding a third way oftenrequires help.

(04:44):
Karrie invited her doctor, family, and me, her coach, into
the conversation.
Together, we explored options.
She couldn't see alone when shestopped trying to control
everything and startedcollaborating.
Clarity replaced panic.
You can use my iCOPE problemsolving method to do the same.

(05:06):
Step one I stands for.
Identify the real issue.
Ask what's the real problemunderneath my fear.
Step two C stands for control.
What you can let go of what'sout of reach, focus on what's
still within your grasp.
Step three.

(05:27):
O stands for outcomes best, worst, and most likely, write
them down.
You'll feel more prepared andshrink your fear of uncertainty.
Step four P stands for plannedsmall achievable steps.
Take one.
Doable action Today.
Momentum builds confidence.

(05:48):
Step five.
E stands for evaluate and adapt.
Check in, be flexible, adjust aslife unfolds.
This structure doesn't eraseuncertainty.
It gives you agency in themiddle of it.
Covey defines synergy as oneplus one equal three or more.

(06:08):
It is what happens when twoopposing forces create something
better together.
A setback turns into strength.
A delay becomes preparation.
A loss reveals a new purpose.
Karrie's life didn't becomeperfect overnight, but it became
possible again most of us.
Fall into one of two traps.

(06:30):
The flight trap, forcing adecision before you're ready.
The freeze trap.
Avoiding decisions and waitingfor clarity that never comes.
the third alternative, invites agentler way.
Pause and create.
When you're stuck, breathe andask, What new possibility

(06:53):
haven't I considered yet?
If I stop trying to win, whatcould I learn?
How could this situation be bothpainful and purposeful?
Let's tie it back to theiCope2Hope Framework.
Step one, develop a growthmindset.
Replace.

(07:13):
I can't with I can One step at atime.
Step two, discover yoursuperpowers.
Remember the strengths thathelped you through hard seasons
before.
they're still available to use.
Again.
Step three, think outside thebox, Combine what you know with

She became a substitute teacher, taught art part-time on YouTube,

(08:18):
built an online following andfound peace in the process.
She said something I'll neverforget.
I realized I didn't have to waitfor life to calm down before I
started living again.
That's the gift of the thirdalternative.
It reminds us that life may notgo back to what it was, but it

(08:39):
can still be beautiful.
Try this reflection exercisetoday.
Think about one decision you'vebeen avoiding.
Write down the two options.
You keep bouncing between.
Then ask yourself, what would athird alternative look like?
What's another way to meet bothneeds?

(09:02):
Who could help you find it?
And what's one small step youcould take this week?

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
