Today on the Floyd Memorial Library Podcast, we’re joined by Joyce Culver photographer, educator, and lifelong observer of the human experience. Born in Manhattan and raised in Ardsley, New York, Joyce grew up in a creative household that encouraged her curiosity and visual instincts. She studied at SUNY Buffalo, where formative mentors helped shape her early voice, and later returned for a MFA at Rochester Institute of Technology in photography solidifying her commitment to the medium.
Over the decades, Joyce has remained a keen and compassionate witness whether capturing queer life in 1980s New York, documenting her father’s Alzheimer’s journey, or photographing countless public figures at the 92nd Street Y. Her lens is one of empathy, patience, and quiet intensity. With work now in the collections of MoMA and the Amon Carter Museum, and after more than 40 years teaching at Columbia, SVA, and Nassau Community College, Joyce reflects on a career spent looking closely and helping others learn to see.
