(00:00):
Let's talk football. Oh my goodness, Week 14 is in
the books. Done.
Like, I cannot believe that we only have four more weeks of
regular season football. How is that?
Possible. Babe, we are going to talk about
it. Countdown is on.
(00:20):
It's on. It's on.
And Oh my God, some of these games.
I mean, we're going to talk about it.
We're going to talk about Eagles, Cowboys, Bills, Chiefs,
Mahomes, Oh my God, losing it. Niners, Seahawks, Vikings and
Raiders. Even though why are we going to
talk about them Bears, Detroit. I mean, we're going to talk
about everything. But we have to start off I think
(00:42):
with would be, I think the game of the week, right?
And that's the Eagles for sure. And the Cowboys, Cowboys
bringing it home at home 33 to 13.
Our page was on fire. Social media, the Dallas fans
showed up. Thank you guys for all your
engagement. The Eagles fans showed up.
Did you guys see all the traction?
(01:04):
So much. It was crazy, right?
And we love it, right? And I love like, the passion for
everybody's team. You know it's so.
Exciting. We we are not selective to teams
here. No.
But if you are a Vikings fan, ifyou are a Bears fan, listen,
bring your charisma. Yeah, bring that energy.
Yeah, we will talk about you too.
But the Cowboys fans are bringing it right?
Exactly. And I don't know, it would help
(01:25):
if you win. Yeah, I.
Mean they don't lose on turf. I'm just saying.
But don't lose on turf. Let's talk about the game and
you know, I think we have to talk about Doc Prescott because
right now he is definitely beingmentioned as the MVP runner in
the in the in the conversation and I would say that Brock's in
(01:45):
there. Hey, if Josh Allen can get it
together. He's in there too, right?
I mean, he has the numbers for it.
He doesn't have the wins, but hehas the numbers for it, right?
And they just have Lamar. But yeah, So what did you, what
was your guys take away about the game?
You you know what I liked is that Dak admitted.
Hey, this this wasn't my best game.
(02:06):
He admitted that straight up. But he still managed his
offense. He still had two touchdowns.
And I think there was a system being played where every team,
like, say, team like special teams, defensive offenses,
everything was clicking right. Everything just started to make
sense. Their kicker?
The rookie out of Notre Dame, 26for 26 comes in and it's 30 for
(02:27):
30 now, three of which were fromthe 50 yard line.
Yeah. 59 and I think 60. Yeah, 50 plus.
You know, you know what I'm saying?
And then you look at Dan Quinn, their defensive coordinator.
I like him. I like him and look what he's
doing right. I mean they they had like 3
forced fumbles for recoveries, like a bunch of sacks.
(02:47):
Then you have the Defensive Player of the Year, in my
opinion, Michael Parsons. How dare you?
Well, I'm sorry you, but he wentinto that game.
This comes. No, that was like when.
Melissa came out of nowhere withDetroit.
You came out of nowhere with my side.
No text, no nothing, I truthfully.
Believe he's the multiplier of the year.
(03:07):
Wait, but this whole time I've been doing impressions.
But that's what you've. Allowed it to go.
On I know. You've.
Never wow you guys. He came into that game saying he
was ill. He was.
He was. He still got a sack.
He. Did give me a break?
Yeah. Well, he was sick.
And then after they won, he's like, you got served.
Did he say that? He did.
(03:28):
I love that movie. Yeah, it was his.
Little sound bites. Yeah, he's like, what do you?
Think I mean, Melissa, I mean what do you, what do you have to
say? OK, just to oppose all of that.
The Eagles, though, right? Like, let's.
So the the Cowboys, they executed, They were amazing.
They had a great game. Just to contrast that.
Can we talk about the Eagles a little bit?
Yeah. Can we talk about both the
(03:49):
defense and offense? Where were they?
Right. Like.
In Philadelphia, they were. Back In Philadelphia, they
didn't. They didn't make it.
They didn't make the plane. Yeah, Miss Flight.
They literally I just, I I was waiting and waiting and waiting
thinking, OK, second-half they're going to show up,
they're going to come in strong. We know that they're capable of
it. They are an amazing team when
(04:09):
they are cohesive and balanced and working together.
But that was not what we saw. Well, and what was so weird to
me because you know, being that I'm a Niner fan, you're you're
definitely keeping your eye on the other NFC teams and I go
back to the draft. Yes.
I was sitting there on the couchgoing, Oh my God, they got
another one. Oh my God, they got.
They to me had the best draft. We.
(04:31):
Said that here, we said, we saidthat here, that Eagles had the
best. Jalen Hurts like, I mean, what
was his name? I forgot the the guy from
Georgia. Oh.
Anyway. Swift, but no.
Well, here's the thing too, withthe Eagles 3 turnovers, and
here's what I thought was interesting, is all of them came
(04:52):
from their Their main guys Hurts, Jalen Hurts, the
quarterback, A.J. Brown, your wide receiver.
And then you had Smith. Those were three turnovers.
You cannot have those in these big games.
No, you can't. I mean, who I will tell you.
And I was watching it on a big screen.
We'll talk about this as I was actually in Dallas, but Jake
(05:13):
Ferguson, I have to say, I kind of liked him.
This guy was jumping over peopleand just like running people
over. I mean, I think he had what, 72
yards and five receptions Like he's doing his solid.
Tight end, he's a blocking tightend.
He knows how to make possessionswork.
He's a rookie and he's only going to get better.
And I don't know, you know, I mean, the the Cowboys are known
(05:33):
for having pretty decent tight ends.
Yeah, so that's true. That's true.
Well, don't forget McCarthy, thehead coach, also had just got
out of surgery. Oh yeah, Four days appendicitis,
yeah. Right.
I was like, I I looked it up. I'm like, how fast did you go
back to work? It wasn't four days.
It didn't say four days. No, I I I had acute
appendicitis. Only 7% of Americans get acute
(05:55):
appendicitis. But I I was solidly out.
Yeah, I buy Lotto tickets, OK? I was out for a good week.
OK. Yeah, see, I get it.
And don't forget, I don't know if you guys saw the little and a
lot, a lot of trash talking thisweekend.
And I remember the AJ called Stefan Gilmore old.
(06:16):
And guess what? He shut that down and he said
it. He goes, he goes, how you know,
I think they asked him like Stefan Gilmore, like what
happened? Like you just came.
Like you brought the heat. And he's like, he called me old.
And you know what? I stand by that.
Call me old and see what happens.
I'm telling you that those are fighting.
Words. Call me pale and see what
happens. Let all be smart.
(06:37):
You can call me a lot of things, but you can't call me old.
No, I'm not old. No, let me go over the stats,
because I found this to be interesting.
Hertz was 18 for 27197 yards, 30rushing, no touchdowns, no
touchdowns. I find that, that, that to be
crazy. And then Dak had, you know,
(06:58):
2439, two 71 yards, 2 touchdownsand shocking, he had zero
interceptions. And we don't lose on turf.
This is their 15th in a row homewin.
They don't lose on turf. Exactly.
And I think, I mean, I just think they had something to
prove this weekend, right? They just, they lost to the
(07:18):
Niners and they were not going to.
Well, I I, I don't know who you picked on your pickums.
Did you? I think I chose Dallas,
actually. I went with the home favorite.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wait, do I?
Do I see a guest? I do.
Well, time out. We have a surprise for you guys.
We'll be right back. Today is a special day because
(07:42):
we have a surprise guest who just happened to be driving down
the street, soft football sexy and said hey, maybe I should go
check out the ice house and see what these ladies are up to.
I heard they talk sports and by the way if he doesn't look
familiar which he probably should but he definitely will
sound familiar because man you Iknow you're probably not gonna
(08:04):
like this but this is a legend in the making.
You are amazing. You are the play by play
broadcaster for. It's hard for me to say, but I
did wear blue for you. The Dodgers.
The Dodgers and so much more. Like, I literally had to write
it down because I couldn't believe it.
It's like you've done you're still with Sportsnet,
LAESPNNNFLMLB and Oh yeah, you did this thing called the World
(08:27):
Series. I mean, can we give it up for a
joke? What?
I mean, I was like, took up my whole card.
Yeah, it took up my whole card. You got to write little small.
Yeah, maybe. I mean, what an amazing story.
We are all fans of yours. Thank you again and thank you to
our segment producer Diana for pulling some strings and getting
(08:51):
you here to talk a little bit about sports and obviously
football. But I feel like we should
definitely get a little bit of your story.
I definitely want to hear about this letter as well.
But how did you become a sports fan?
I I think it was with your dad. And yeah, but like most of a lot
of us as well. Right.
Yeah, my dad was a football coach and actually my dad still
(09:15):
is involved in football because he travels with me to my NFL
games and he's my spotter. So he's standing next to me and,
you know, pointing to my charts and everything to help me out.
That's that's an aside. As a kid, I grew up going to his
practices and you know, I'd come.
I'd come to his practice after school and I'd take a nap and
the pile of tackling dummies. And I, you know, I as I got
(09:35):
older, I got more involved in his practices and then I played
for him. And so even before I really
thought about a career in sportsand and sports broadcasting, I
was probably getting ready for it just because I was around it
so much and. You ended up being a
quarterback. Yeah.
I Yeah. You're built like a quarterback,
Yeah. Thank you.
Nice. This guy.
(09:56):
I mean I'm sitting just say 64 probably about 6 foot you you
don't know I'm sitting six foot plane weight one 85190.
I'm I'm way down. No matter.
How can be numbers I? Can't keep it on.
I love it. I love it.
But how? I mean, we have all so many
questions. But the letter?
I saw something about this letter and I thought that to be
(10:18):
beyond interesting, beyond, you know, fate, like you are meant
to do exactly what you're doing.Or I'm just stupid?
Lucky. I I swear I get lucky so often.
Yeah, it was when I was in college.
I grew up a big Cubs fan and wasgoing to a Cubs game.
And Len Casper, their TV announcer, was, I was a big fan
(10:40):
of his, just watching Cubs gamesevery day.
And I said, hey, you know, at this point I knew what I wanted
to do. So I wrote Len a letter and put
it in my pocket. My dad and I were going to the
game at Wrigley, walked to the stadium, got up to the press
box. I was going to have the press
box attendant deliver it to Len,reached in my pocket and it was
gone. So I was like, oh so sad, so
(11:02):
disappointing. Cubs get beat per usual riding
back to Michigan and I see that I have a voicemail and it's the
owner of the Taco Bell across the street from Wrigley Field.
Somebody'd found the letter on the sidewalk and brought it to
her and she left the message andsaid hey, it's got a footprint
on it, but otherwise it's good. I'm going to take it to Len to
(11:22):
two weeks later, I get an e-mailfrom Len, and he turned into one
of my biggest mentors. He made a call for me.
Yeah, right. A year after that, I got my
first big job, and that was in AA, the Montgomery Biscuits.
I saw that I had to look that up.
I was like, I didn't hear that. What is that?
Right tasty food? But what baseball team?
(11:44):
So yeah, he Len made the call a couple years after that when I
was a finalist for that job and I think probably put me over the
top to get the job. What an amazing story, and you
know what I mean? I'm sure you girls like just to
have the wherewithal to just go for it, to go for it.
A lot of people. And I think that's the
difference between a lot of people that are in your position
or they don't take that chance, you know what I mean?
(12:06):
Yeah. And I probably, I don't think I
would change anything, but I wasprobably a little annoying,
probably a little over the top alittle, because I now being in
the other side of it and being in a position to be able to help
aspiring broadcasters out, thereare times where I'm like, wow,
this guy's reaching out a lot. Like this is a little much.
And then I'm thinking, Jesus is not close to what I would do,
(12:26):
like, Oh my gosh, was I a pain? But like I said, I wouldn't.
Change it, yeah. Yeah, I can relate to that.
But I mean, I know we have some Laker Dodgers.
Yeah, you know, I. Bet.
By the way, I'm wearing blue foryou.
I just want to give. You a little bit.
I like to tie everything in here.
I'm a giant. We, we, we, we like to tie
everything in here. And this is a football podcast,
(12:48):
but I I mean, we'd be crazy to not mention the fact that the
Dodgers just spent a little over, I don't know, like $700
million. Ten years for Shohei Ohtani, an
arm that's had two Tommy John surgeries, and you don't even
know if he can pitch. But the real thing that gets me
about this contract is that it'sreally kind of set up like an
(13:08):
NFL contract. Not, I don't know if everybody
here knows this, but the payments are deferred.
You're not gonna get it until like I think it was 2032, is
that? It's gonna get paid forever.
Which is a book out of the NFL playbook, and I mean a play out
of the NFL playbook. And what I liked about it is it
really saves the Dodgers on luxury tax as well.
It does that and the I think thebig thing is that it allows them
(13:31):
to continue to spend. Now this is his idea he wanted
to and it's not just deferring alittle bit.
It's 70 million a year that he'son the surface making.
He's deferring 68 a year to the future.
So Shohei Otani, maybe the greatest player of all time is
going to be making $2,000,000 a year, which means it's as if
they just added the greatest player ever.
(13:53):
But from a roster construction standpoint, it's like they
didn't do anything and they can continue to add pieces cause all
he cares about is winning. So it was pretty awesome.
Deal. I mean, yeah.
What other piece you have Mookietoo?
It's just it's out of. Which is not good for this.
No, it's not good for me, an Angels fan, man.
If you, if you dare go after Mike Trout, I'm going to be.
(14:17):
Yeah. But then, you know what I loved
about you is you were a quarterback, right?
And currently in the NFL, it's like all the first string
quarterbacks are touring. Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory
and Oompa Loompa Doobadi do. Every week another quarterback
falls off, right? So we lost Herbert season ending
surgery. CJ Stroud went out with
concussion protocol. I find it even more like
(14:39):
appealing now. Like try to name who's still
playing that started this. I, like we said, yes.
We said on last podcast who you know if you're a quarterback and
you're like doing you know working at a grocery store.
Get ready. Let's go get.
Ready. That's I'm trying to stay ready.
It's like the new kit quarterback is the is the new
kicker of the NFL right. You're gonna have just this camp
of dudes ready to there's. Some teams that could use you
(15:00):
right now. I mean, it's been a minute.
But what are what are your thoughts on this right now?
Like, what do you think it's happening?
Right. It stinks.
I don't know. I I don't know that it's
anything other than just poor luck.
We I had the Ravens and Rams game this weekend, and Lamar
Jackson, who's a big part of hisstory, has been that he's not
been able to stay healthy. He's the only guy in the
division that's still standing. So I I mean, it stinks, 'cause
(15:23):
you want to see all the the bestplayers on the field, obviously.
Right. Can I bring it back to like 2012
for you really quick back in time?
Sideburns, I. Like it?
Yeah, sure. Fashions to the football.
So you were calling the sunbelt. You're over there during This is
during the Johnny Manziel time. Can you just tell me some of
your memories that you stand outmemory Like what?
(15:45):
What was that like and what do you remember from that?
It's funny that you bring up Johnny Manziel.
I was just talking about that this weekend.
He one of his breakout games. Maybe the breakout game was
against Louisiana Tech, kind of a random game that I happened to
get the call for. I was really, really young at
that .23 to 24, and this is a big deal for me to get this
(16:07):
game. And then it happened to be that
it was his his big game where everybody found out about Johnny
Football and so he goes wins theHeisman that year.
And my calls from that game wereall over the show and that was
the first time I was like Oh my God, like people are gonna hear
me cuz now before that was minorLeague Baseball and it was James
buried on ESPN. You know, 8 ESPN the Ocho.
(16:29):
So that, yeah, Johnny Football, man, he's fizzled out, but we'll
always have a. Get him back in.
My heart. Get him back in here.
Absolutely. Yeah, he's next.
He's get him back. Well, I mean, and I don't know
if I said this because literallythere were so many things.
You've done football, you've done baseball, you've done
college. But when I found out you did the
Wild Card game last year for my Niners, Oh yeah, and Seattle, I
(16:53):
did get a little happy. Because what AII just can't
imagine. And I know you're probably not a
Niner fan, but that's OK. But to call, to call these
games, right? Is there a preference?
I know you're probably hard to say, but like you are, you're a
Bears fan, right? Grew up a Lions fan.
Actually grew up a Lions fan. So I'm I'm pretty excited pretty
(17:13):
excited this season. I I'm not allowed to say that
I'm completely neutral now. I actually had lions against
Saints the other day 2 weeks agoand.
Yeah, that turned out. Played it down the middle, like
look, it's it's it's been a longtime since I was the fan.
You hate to say that. You know, that's what.
I was going to ask you sometimes, is it hard for you to
call a game when you kind of just want to be a fan?
(17:37):
That's a great question. I think it's OK to be the way I
channel. That is I'm a fan of the sport.
I love football, and when I'm doing baseball, I love baseball.
And I try to let those things come through as opposed to, you
know, it's been long enough where I've been a devoted Lions
fan just because I'm busy doing games where I don't have to
(17:57):
worry about that. Where it does get tricky is when
I do the Dodgers on national TV.So say I'm doing Dodgers,
Giants, and at that point I'm down the middle.
But the other. You know. 95% of the time I'm
the Dodger guy. So that's the only time where it
gets a little bit tricky in terms of making sure that you're
calling it down the middle. Right.
Because I think that would be difficult And you know, knowing
(18:18):
kind of like where what we started with football sexy is
like, I really have an idea now of like what it takes to know as
much as you need to know. Like can you tell us a little
bit about like your routine and how you, how you prepare for a
game and when, how much time do you get?
It's we find out where we are like a week and a half, two
(18:39):
weeks before and then just kind of parachute in.
But you're right, the preparation is probably just
from a time standpoint, the broadcast 3 hours, that's a very
small percentage of the time of the job and 95% of the job is
the preparation that you put in to get ready.
So I spend all week reading all the articles from both cities we
(19:00):
get. Fox sends us a packet that is
just a a PDF, just a plain text PDF of all the articles from the
two cities. So this week I've got Chiefs and
Patriots, and I got, you know, 50 pages of Patriots articles
that show up each day, 50 pages of Chiefs articles that show up
each day. I'm reading those and I'm
building my spotting charts which you know has all the
(19:23):
players in the in a big blown upway and stats and stories that
throughout my week of prep it's kind of my landing spot for
everything that I'm learning andget that cleaned up as we travel
on Friday sometimes Saturday, production meeting Saturday
night doing meetings with the teams on Thursday and Friday
used to always be in person but Zoom has changed that.
(19:44):
We're able to get that done fromhome and then make the moves to
wherever we're headed and do thegame Sunday, start to work on
the next week on the flight homeand do it again.
That's. So interesting.
I was going through your Instagram and I was looking at
your old boards, right? Yeah, Let's see.
It's Mayfield and Mahomes. Oh, right.
In Oklahoma. And so I was wondering about
that too. I was looking at your boards and
(20:06):
how you have your stats and you know, color-coded different
things. Yeah, it's just so interesting
to see how you know, how you prepare, how you get ready and
then how you organize all your thoughts onto it And on also on
your Instagram, I have to say it's, I love it because you only
follow one person. You I think you have like 40,000
followers and he only follows one person his.
(20:28):
Wife. Amen.
His wife I had to be his wife I.Loved that so much.
It just made. I was like, so curious.
I was like, who? Was Oh yeah.
I just. I figure it's a slippery slope.
Not like with women, just with Instagram, period.
Where it's like, boy, I don't want to.
I don't want it like it becomes a waste of time, right?
It just sucks your time out. So it's one thing that I try to,
(20:49):
you know, and then your. Bio Just your one line.
My kids think I'm cool is. That what I got on there.
Yeah, that's so cool. I don't do a ton on there, but
yeah, I'm glad to hear that and.I I just kind of makes kind of
puts family back into perspective.
Absolutely. That's the most important thing.
We can talk all we want about football.
And talking about your wife, Yeah, just.
I'm assuming she's a sports fan as well.
(21:10):
Or not, she is. She is a fan of my career.
Like, whatever, I'm involved. In Yeah, I like it.
She's. A fan of Dodger off.
Days. I love it.
I could. Imagine.
No, she's not a huge sports fan,but she is an amazing wife and
(21:30):
so she's interested in what's important to me and that is my
job. And so she cares about, you
know, she's excited for Ohtani and she cares about what game
I'm doing. And now that my, you know, my
five year old son's really getting into everything that I'm
doing. And you know, she kind of
vicariously through him putting the TV on for him so he can
(21:51):
watch these games and other. Things you can.
Hear Dad. Yeah, let's go.
I would love. That I I feel like 20 years
before the. Sunset.
He can take over, right? Sure.
And now his little brother's going to be upset about that.
But hey, we're perfect. Perfect.
Well, I mean, I know, I feel like we would have to ask you
(22:11):
about the Taylor Swift thing like in the NFL, like Chiefs.
Kelsey, do you have any thoughtson that?
It's funny you ask. I just so I was you know before
I came over at the kids school. Before that I was prepping for
this week and I get into this clips back that we're talking
about and there is like pages and pages of coverage about will
(22:36):
Taylor Swift be there. And at Gillette this weekend I'm
like geez, I guess I should probably have this stuff because
I know we're going to show her. I know I got to be ready to talk
about it. So I can tell you that they
think she's going to be there because her schedule appears to
be clear and they also think Gillette Stadium Special Tour
because. Oh, thank God.
Big NFL stadium that she, she had an appearance in.
(22:57):
Performed in the rain or something.
I don't know. So I There you go.
That all True said check out OK?Yeah.
All right, I may need you. I those clips packets are good,
but I can't say that I'm an expert on T Swift.
There's. One thing I know, it's Taylor.
Swift. All right.
Oh my God. So, well, I mean can we kind of
talk about the game, the the Chiefs Bills game a little bit
(23:19):
So it's you know you know a little bit here.
I can. I think we can all admit that
was an amazing game and what I don't want to happen is some
silly offsites call to take all the credit away from the bills.
And listen, I don't know your opinion on this.
I used to do sideline reporting,so you you you get to know these
athletes and you get to know their energies.
(23:40):
I'm not mad that he threw a tantrum.
You're an athlete. You have passion.
What I don't like is then when he went to hug, Allen didn't
like that either. He literally said that was the
dumbest effing call I've ever You're hugging a quarterback who
just won. Yeah, you gotta have
sportsmanship. Have some sportsmanship in class
so you know, like, I mean, what were your thoughts on that game?
(24:00):
Reading about it today, it sounds like the big gripe
ultimately was that there was nowarning issue.
And OK, so how about this? You roll your eyes at it, but
Andy Reid, in 25 years as a headcoach, do you know how many
offensive offsides have been called against him in 1/4
century prior to that play? I.
Bet I don't. 0 Because he said any time it happens, there's a
(24:24):
warning issued and it gets corrected.
And you need, if you need proof of that, the fact that it had
never been called. So that's why they were so
ticked off and obviously that a penalty was thrown, but one that
you never see called without a warning and to come in that.
Spot, It's so weird because as afan and I watch, I'm a die hard
Niner fan, right? And I've literally watched every
(24:46):
single 49er game since DIRECTV allowed me to.
And sometimes you're looking andyou're like, excuse me, back up.
And nobody's doing it. And I'm like, nobody called it,
but you can see it as a fan a lot of times.
And I'm like, well, it's not getting called, but, you know,
we'll give it to Mahomes, You know, that was the first time we
kind of saw him lose it. Yeah.
And. He's already apologized for it.
(25:07):
He's already said it's a bad look for kids that are watching
me. So man, like, right?
He deserves some grace. I I agree and and the credit I
wanted to give to the Bills was this game was like their season
was on the line, their season was on the line.
Their defense stepped up. They showed up.
They made stops. You know that then look at look
(25:28):
at the other side of the ball. I mean, my only issue with the
other side of the ball is StefanDiggs.
I, I I think that between Diggs and Allen, there's still this
disconnect because of the, you know, the back and forth talking
Diggs brother getting involved. But they still found a way to
make it work, right? Allen still showed up, had a
great game and defense. I mean like defensively.
(25:49):
I think it's oh gosh I'm I'm. I'm forgetting their
coordinator's name. He's done a really good job at
helping create like really good mismatches and they've just been
turning on Cook, got himself involved offensively this week.
We love to see that as well. Brady's become a great
coordinator for them. I think this is the team that we
will see in the play offs. That's my.
(26:10):
Opinion And that leads me to my next question.
Not to put you on the spot. Not to put you on the spot.
What What do you I the power ratings came out.
Niners were first. Not just because I'm here.
Because you're the best team. Because they thank you.
Wait. Replay that.
Say that again. Joe Davis. 49ers to the best
team. You heard it here.
(26:32):
Thank you. You heard it here first, my 49er
faithfuls. I'm guessing you didn't hear it
here first. Maybe not, Maybe not.
Maybe not. Well, no.
And you know, what I love about this year is I feel like it's
the Niner Dallas rivalry again, right?
It's that the catch by the way. That's just, I want to know your
(26:54):
your Super Bowl predictions if possible.
But I also thought about this and was like, is there a moment,
a play that you were like, Dang,I wish I could have called that.
Oh man, a lot. I mean, as a kid, it was every
moment that would happen. I sat there and said, man, how
cool would it be to one day be that guy that gets to call those
(27:15):
moments? I mean, the play that got
overturned by the penalty on Sunday in Kansas City be a fun
one to call. And Jim did a great job calling
that play only to have it wiped away.
Those ones stink right where youfeel like you got this epic play
and you're like, yeah, nailed that call.
Didn't hear that for years. Oh God, there's a penalty.
It didn't even. Count the, like conception that
that never was like I'm sure somebody will coin it.
(27:37):
You should coin it. I think we're, we're going to
coin that right now. All right.
So Super Bowl, are you going to be in Vegas by chance?
I won't be Kevin Burkhart, OK, We'll we'll do that so you get.
Kevin are sorry. It's not Fox's here, but Kevin
Burkhart would be the guy if it was Fox.
Wife will be happy. Yeah.
OK, well, you. Should come here because we're
going to be here in Pasadena. Yeah, this is true since you.
(28:00):
Just drive by. Here watch party.
Watch party, Huge watch party. Yeah, Johnny, Buzz, Penny, all
of us. I mean it.
I do think the 49ers are the best team.
Whether or not that means they go to the Super Bowl and win the
Super Bowl, we'll see. But we had them week one against
Pittsburgh, bet them a couple times.
Since then we interestingly, we had them week one against
(28:21):
Pittsburgh and then we had them in Jacksonville when the sky was
falling and they had lost three in a row.
And you know it's to see the different perspectives and and I
love the roller coaster that an NFL season is.
You put it all together and it'slike they are still.
I mean there's they're loaded onoffense with weapons.
Brock Purdy's better than anybody could ever have
(28:42):
imagined. He's not just, you know, fitting
a piece to the puzzle. He's the number one quarterback
in the NFL by many measures. And then the defense is
outstanding. So I I think that they are the
best team now. I think the Cowboys may be the
hottest team and you know there's so much is is what you
do or what you're doing when youget there.
And on the AFC side, I think it's wide open because like you
(29:04):
mentioned the Bills, you think you're going to see them in the
play offs. I think you're probably right
and I think you don't want to see them in the play offs as an
opponent. So I mean, you could see.
That not when Josh Allen's fighting nine different
receivers in a game. But it's wide open.
I'm out of Baltimore this weekend.
I don't know. I don't know if I'm totally sold
on them. Dolphins, you're not.
(29:25):
I'm not they. I'm sorry, Lamar.
I know he's great. I know.
But I must be bad luck for the Ravens because every time I
watch a full game, they lose. And I'm like, why?
Why are they watching? The game so.
Yeah, whenever I watch a game, I'm just not impressed, but the
stats are there. But I think you know, and that's
what I love about football, right, is you never literally
(29:47):
like any given Sunday well. Speaking of that, can I pick
your brain throughout the Lions?I have just become a giant Lions
fan. Just what?
Happened. Big cat fan over here, yeah.
That's. Big cat.
Fan She came out on our day one podcast and we're like, wait,
you walked in here, a Niner fan,and you left the Detroit?
Fan I watched Hard Knocks. Oh, stole my.
Heart, OK. As a coach, I just like hard
(30:08):
eyes. I'm just like this is who I
would want to play for. He just knows how to get his
team moving. I think we've seen that in the
three years Matt he's been with the Lions now as the head coach
and it's just you're so exciting.
Although as of late it's been a little disappointing.
So as a former maybe sure a little bit Lions fan.
What are your? Thoughts.
Yeah. And I can tell you as somebody
who covered them two weeks ago, too, they're fun and exciting
(30:33):
offensively and the games are fun and exciting because they
stink defensively and it's 40 to39.
Like, I I just think they're a year away because of that.
It's going to be hard, I think, to make a I I could see them,
you know, obviously going to make the playoffs at this point,
But an early exit because somebody's going to sneak up and
out score them, yeah. I think there was a young
(30:54):
unexpected as a. As a team and a, they're a year
ahead too. But, but come on, guys, they're
This is the second time they've played the Bears.
Their defense didn't step up. Somebody other than Hutchinson
has to do something, no doubt I love.
Him. But he's one like you.
Said what? What do you what is he doing?
Make some stops. Come on guys, And you've already
played this team. Come on.
When you said two weeks ago, were you Thanksgiving?
(31:17):
The week after. Because then I had Jack Harlow
questions. I don't have answers for you on
that. OK, OK.
But so let's talk about the Super Bowl prediction.
I know you. You think and I agree with you
by the way is that, and I think a lot of people do, is right now
the Niners are the most completeteam.
They are And Brock Purdy, I I'vesaid it from beginning, not just
(31:40):
now that he will be the next franchise quarterback for San
Francisco. What are your thoughts on that?
First of all, I can tell you that he's as good as he is as a
quarterback. He's awesome as a person.
I love that sit down with so. You can know that that he's, I
mean it really does feel like you're he's from you know you
(32:00):
went to went to Iowa State and he's not from the Midwest.
But it feels like you're sittingdown with a Midwest kid who
could be doing any one of a number of jobs as opposed to the
top quarterback in the league. At this point.
He's just as down to earth as they come.
And who would have thought? I mean, I know you say you did,
but who we We had the Dolphins game when Garoppolo went out
last year and he got his first chance and we're like, oh boy,
(32:22):
here comes, you know, Mr. Irrelevant.
We'll see how. This goes.
Played well, That game played well to finish the season,
obviously into the playoffs. But then you get to this point
and it's more than a year of work and you can't argue it
anymore. It's more than just a guy who's
kind of come in and steady the shift.
He's quarterback. Yeah.
(32:43):
He's not just a system quarterback.
He is, I think, showing. And I love Jimmy G too.
But I always talk about this as like when Jimmy G would drop
back. You're just kind of cringing a
little bit. You're just like, I really don't
know how less is going to go. You didn't get that with Brady.
You didn't get that with certainquarterbacks and Brock.
I don't get that with Brock. Yeah, more and more every week,
(33:03):
right? There's that sense of comfort, I
would imagine, as a 49ers fan. And I love that you say he's a
good guy because that's how he'ssaying we always talk about his
Kohl's outfit, you know, becauseeverybody has the drift, right?
They have all the bling. And we love that he has his
little backpack, his little cacky and.
The cornfield on his plow. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Off day is just like. Yeah, I always say.
And when I always, we always talk about if we stay healthy.
(33:24):
Yeah, if we stay. For.
Every team, right? Yeah, if we stay healthy, I
really think that that they'll pull it out.
You know who else besides the Niners do you think?
Dallas. Obviously, do you?
Agree with the Power Rankings right now, then.
What do I even seen? What?
Do they have Dallas #2? Eagles, Ravens and Detroit?
(33:45):
Yeah, those are the top five. Right now, I think that you
still can't count the Eagles out.
Ravens. Like I said, I'm not entirely
sold. Maybe the Rams are better than
we realized. And I'm not saying they belong
near the top of the rankings. I just mean maybe I shouldn't be
as down on the Ravens after whatI saw Sunday as I as I am.
(34:06):
And it's not that I'm down on them.
I just see ten and three, but then I see an inconsistent team.
Some days they're going to, they're going to do what they
did to the Lions and look like the best team on planet Earth.
And other days they just don't totally have it.
For a lot of Sunday, they didn'ttotally have it.
So I think that's why the AF CS wide open again.
Kansas City's 8:00 and 5:00, butyou're not going to count out
(34:27):
Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. I don't rambling, but.
No. Another big topic right now is
that darn tush flush. Should we or should we not
eliminate that? Thoughts.
I don't mind eliminating it cuz I'm kind of sick of talking
about. It, right.
Sorry, I brought it. Up.
No, I don't mean that. I mean like I got the Eagles on
(34:49):
Christmas. Day.
I'm so sick of it too. And it's.
Snowing. So should we get rid of it?
What do you think? Yeah, I wouldn't mind that.
I agree. Should we call Roger?
Yeah, go ahead and make. I'll make that call.
Okay. The other question I have, I
know we're talking about football, but I have to go back
to football, baseball, college, everything you've done right now
(35:09):
there some of these teams are 6 zero, final score, 30 Vikings,
Raiders. If I'm you in the booth I'm as a
fan I'm going nut. We talk about all the time.
We're like, Oh my God. Just you know what I mean?
How do you get through games like that?
Like, where do you pull from when it's not an exciting game,
I guess? You're right.
Harder than the six nothing gamethough, is the 60 to nothing
(35:31):
game. At least when it's 6, nothing,
it's like it's still. Yeah, both both teams are
sucking, right? What do you want me to say?
It's. Close.
You want the game to be close When it's a blowout, that's when
you say. It like 70 to 20, like 70 to 20.
Exactly. That's when you're earning your
money and we do all this prep during the week.
A lot of what we prepared doesn't get in.
(35:54):
You never hear because the. Game takes.
Precedence Now, when it's a blowout, that's when that work
really comes to play. Yeah, you're telling stories and
and. Yeah.
Interesting in ways other than, you know, first in 10.
So that that's what I was going to bring up.
Like when I when I used to do sideline with ESPN and we were
going to do a game that we're like, Oh my gosh, this is a
guarantee game. I know exactly what's about to
(36:14):
happen here. I would always try and go and
find like kitchy stories about the random players on the team
to be like, you know what's funny?
He worked at a Baskin-robbins and he can no longer eat ice
cream like because you have nothing to say.
Yeah, and you're not going to use that if the game's good.
No. And how many times can you say
like their defense is not playing well, like get out of
here. Exactly.
Yeah. So you're always prepared.
(36:35):
I mean, it only happens what hopefully, especially in the
NFL, rarely happens where it's ablowout.
But when it does, you better be ready.
Did you run into that this year?Say we've had a pretty good year
of of games. We thought we were running into
it in New Orleans a couple weeks, so it's 21.
Nothing Lions faster than it's been 21.
Nothing in any game in like 2 decades.
(36:56):
First quarter, right? Like 6 minutes.
Yeah, yeah. And we're like, oh gosh, here we
go. Wanda Coffee Closer.
Yeah, coffee, coffee or like replacement.
Anybody want to take? Over.
Right, right, right, right. I get back.
Home. Yeah, yeah.
And twice we. Told I'd had a good few days in
New Orleans, made a guys trip out of it.
So I was. Feeling.
Great. At the time, it was like, here
we go, you know, like, I'm like feeling how I'm feeling and it's
(37:19):
21. Nothing like that, thankfully
wound up close. I'm glad you mentioned the guys
trip, right? Because I'm thinking, how do
you? Because again, I mean, we're new
in the space, right? All women talking for football.
This is the first podcast of allwomen talking football.
And we do our homework right? And I'm thinking like, this is
just for one hour. I can imagine what you guys go
(37:40):
through. How do you turn it off and what
do you do for fun? What do you do outside of
preparing? And I'm sure with the kids, you
have their kids, your wife. But like, is there something
that you're like, I just need, like, I smoke cigars.
Is it you play chess? Like, is there anything that
kind of like takes you away fromall of the craziness?
Yeah, it's it's first and foremost it's my family and it's
(38:04):
mostly that I tell people I'm kind of a boring guy, like I
don't have that many interests because I don't.
Nobody has time, right? But when I when I'm not
travelling or when I'm not preparing for a game, I don't.
I can't go spend 5 hours on a golf course until my family by.
I've been gone for four days andI'm back home and I'm going to
(38:25):
go golf. I can't go boat like I don't
have a boat or anything like that.
I love food. I saw a big BBQ, yeah.
And I saw some steaks. Yeah, cook.
I like to cook food. My wife and I like to.
We're big foodies going out trying restaurants all over LA,
so it's pretty much just my my family, my job and then, you
(38:47):
know, fitness and food and they kind of work hand in hand, one
so I can do the other. But yeah, the big four there, I
guess family, job, fitness and food in whatever order.
Right. Now, I think a lot of Dodger
fans would kill us if we didn't bring up Vince.
Yeah, can you talk about and even as a Giant fan that voice,
(39:12):
those moments being on the otherside of that by the way many
times iconic. And can you tell us anything
about your time? Because if you know you replace,
is that OK? To say I never tried.
I never looked at it like that. I like to say I was the guy that
followed him. Right there.
You know, you can just call replacing that.
(39:34):
Just I don't think it was going to be healthy for me.
Mentally to to. Look at it that way and and
nobody's going to replace the greatest ever to do it.
I'll say that if I didn't have much crossover with Vin because
his last year, it was my first year, he was doing just home
games, I was doing just Rd. games.
So we we didn't see each other. But what I'll say is that it
(39:54):
being able to be the guy to follow him is largely why I
wanted the job as opposed to, you know, I think a lot of
people looked at it and say you don't want that job, you don't
want to be the guy that follows.Come after that.
But I'm like, OK, I get it. But am I going to not take the
job? What?
How is that going to feel in 10 years?
In 50 years, when I say I had a chance to be the voice of the
(40:18):
Dodgers, but I didn't do it because I was scared it wouldn't
work. That little boy who took the
letter? That's right.
Yeah, of course you have to takeit.
Now you you have to take this job and I like the word
followed, right? You're paying homage to what
he's done. I mean, there's not many Vince
Scully. I mean, when I think of like
announcers at that caliber, it'slike Vince and and Chick Kern
(40:39):
and you are coming in, you're paying respect to him, you're
making it your own. It's been a very smooth
transition. I have a ton of Dodger friends
who are very big on critiquing people and I hear nothing but
amazing things about you. You have a great cadence, you
know how to talk baseball. You're very understanding and
you really make the game feel welcoming.
(41:00):
And I think that's a huge deal when it comes to broadcasting.
So you're doing a great job and this is from an Angels fan and.
And this is from a Giants fan, and we're being serious like you
are. And that's why I said I I really
believe what I said. And when I started out the
podcast was this is a legend in the making for sure.
And I know you probably have to go, but why don't I just ask you
one more thing? And that would be, did you guys
(41:21):
have any other questions? I'm sure that Joe has some
steaks to grill. And, you know, it's been such a
pleasure having you here. I can't tell you how much it
means to us for you to to come and hang out with us.
We love football. We love women that love
football. But we love announcers who call
our games. And you know what?
That's the thing too. We forget they played games
(41:43):
before with no announcers. Do you remember that?
And they tried that. It was horrible job.
Security, right. Like, oh God, this is the ad.
And then? It's horrible.
I like. This and.
You know what I tried? I tried to call it myself.
I was like, well, they go and let me.
Not good at all. Not good at all.
Not good. At all.
OK. So Joe, when's the next game we
(42:03):
can hear you on? Sunday Chiefs, Patriots.
Pretty big game. Christmas Day, Tommy DeVito
Giants. Tommy DeVito with the hardest
working agent in sports right now, you see.
The. Agent.
All this stuff, all this stuff and.
Do you like to go to Philly? Between you and I just we won't
(42:25):
talk. Philly, I love it.
I love. It I love it.
So my first World Series was Philly's Astros.
So I spent. Like the whole month in
Philadelphia and. For.
A foodie. It's a great.
City, yeah. Yeah, well, a lot of a lot of
Eagle fans get a bad rap. Yeah.
So I didn't know. I just had to had to ask.
Philadelphia sports fans get a bad rap, but I think it
(42:48):
shouldn't be a bad rap. It should just be.
They are passionate. They care.
And it's why the environment's there so many.
I mean Detroit. Fans.
Very much so. Totally, yeah.
We'll hear you in a see you Sunday, and then on Christmas
Day all. Right.
Yes. Let's go.
And football is. Sexy.
(43:09):
Football is. Sexy.
Thank you. Alright.
