In this episode of 'Forward Into the Past', the host JC Rede continues the serialization of the 1915 Nick Carter mystery, 'The Call of Death or Nick Carter's Clever Assistant'. The story picks up with Chapter Four, where detective Nick Carter visits the office of Kate Crandall, a public stenographer with lavish tastes and questionable ethics, under the guise of needing her services for his writing. Using a clever ruse involving a fictitious letter and the mention of a sensational detective drama featuring himself, Carter aims to extract information related to the mysterious disappearance of the Reverend Austin Maybrick. Crandall's reaction to the story reveals her potential involvement and triggers a sudden refusal to work with Carter, leading to a tense confrontation. Despite Carter's attempt to learn more, Crandell remains tight-lipped, prompting him to strategize his next moves carefully. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving listeners eager to discover how Carter plans to unveil Crandall's secrets and solve the mystery of the vanished reverend.

(00:20):
Now before we get started.
I would like to apologize to ourlisteners and help try to
explain the irregularity of therelease of this podcast.
As of this moment today.
It is October 3rd, 2022.
And since the first week inAugust, there has been a huge
delay in the release of thesestories.

(00:42):
It's been wild.
Now to begin with thisparticular story, the call of
death was not supposed to berecorded until after the new
year.
To begin January, 2023.
It had to be moved up becausethe story which was supposed to
be recorded in August, nickCarter and the mystery of St.
Agnes hospital.

(01:03):
Had some troubling themes andcharacters, which in today's
worldview may have caused a lotof uncomfortable situations.
So this story had to be movedup.
Now just before I had planned tostart recording this new story.
However, I celebrated myanniversary with my wife by
going away for several days, which of course delayed the

(01:26):
recording.
Now, when we got back from thegetaway.
Our oldest cat, Lucy.
Had taken a term for the worst.
She was 16 and lived a long, long life.
And now she was reaching theend.
That weekend.
That I was supposed to startrecording.
I had to say goodbye to my 16year old fur kid.

(01:50):
So I wasn't particularly in themood to do any sort of
recording.
I had planned to start recordingthe Weekend, but.
As luck would have it.
I don't know if it was due tothe grieving process or
whatever.
But I managed to catch.
My summer cold, which I will doat least once.

So I had to wait another weekbefore starting to record.
Of course the very followingweekend.
Was labor day weekend.
So I hadn't planned on recordingthat weekend at all.
One of the reasons being is thatparticular weekend was the

(02:31):
opening weekend for Halloweenhorror nights at universal
Orlando.
I happen to live in Orlando andHalloween horror nights happens
to be my wife's absolutefavorite thing.
To do so.
I indulged I went along with herduring opening week.
This of course turned out to bea huge mistake for me and the

(02:55):
podcast.
Because at some point over thatweekend.
I managed to catch.
The COVID 19 coronavirus.
Luckily for me, I'm vaccinated.
The symptoms were relativelymild.
But they still ravaged me enoughto not be able to do the

(03:16):
podcast.
The following weekend.
One week after that, however, and I was relatively
symptom-free.
I was back in the saddle andmanaged to record two episodes
that weekend I was all preparedto record another two episodes
this past week when the onlyother thing that could have
possibly happened to determinemy recording I actually did You

(03:39):
see as i mentioned before I livein orlando florida And just this
past week Florida was devastatedby hurricane ian Well luckily
for me I live in the northwestpart of orange county And my
house was spared Any damaged.

(04:03):
I suffered no loss of power orlife and none of my friends
Outside of power loss sufferedany great damage either they're
all Alive healthy and safe whichwas the most important thing to
me But because of all that therewas absolutely no way i was

(04:23):
going to do any sort ofrecording that week And so Here
we are 60 days since this allstarted and i'm still Now It's
been a very strange andincredibly rough 60 days But

(04:47):
that's the way it goes sometimesLife just kind of happens and
You deal with whatever cardsyou're dealt with And we just
keep moving on So To all of youout there who have been
following this podcast andwondering What the heck is going
on with this guy is he Notcommitted to recording is he

(05:09):

moment and Let you know whatexactly what was going on here

So here we go Continue on wherewe left off In the nick carter
mystery The call of death ornick carter's Clever assistant

(05:53):
Chapter four.
Nick Carter's ruse.
Two o'clock found Nick Carter atthe door of an office on the
second floor of the local bankbuilding.
He was reading the tenant signon a polished brass plate.
Kate Crandell, publicstenographer.
Nick listened briefly hearingnothing from within, and he then
opened the door and entered.

(06:14):
The office was attractivelyfurnished.
A costly Persian rug covered thefloor.
Against one of the walls stoodan expensive roll top desk.
On a stand nearby were twotypewriters.
On a table in the middle of theoffice, covered with books and
magazines.
Was a huge cut glass jar, literally overflowing with

(06:35):
magnificent roses.
Nick instantly noticed thesecostly furnishings, which were
much too expensive for one whoworks for a living.
And he drew correct conclusion.
That Kate Crandall had wealthyadmirers and that she had no
scruples over accepting valuabletokens of their affection.
She was seated in an armchairnear one of the lace draped

(06:57):
windows absorbed in a magazinestory.
When the detective entered.
She was a pronounced brunette, strikingly handsome with regular
features.
A rich velvety complexion.
Languorous dark eyes and fullred lips.
a face evincing, a sensuousnature at a fiery temper.

(07:18):
Her fine figure was a bitshowily clad.
Several costly diamonds, adornedher shapely hands.
One high-heeled French shoe anda bit of silk hosiery protruded
from below her stylish blueskirt.
Fly and fancy is right.
Thought Nick recalling Patsy'sprediction.
Looking up when he entered KateCrandell, received him with a

(07:40):
smile and laid aside hermagazine.
Good afternoon, sir.
She said, greeting himagreeably.
Take a seat.
You are miss Crandall?
Returned Nick inquiringly.
Yes, sir.
Said Kate bowing.
My name is Henderson.
Said Nick taking a chair.
Do I find you busy just now?
No indeed.
Not at present.

(08:01):
What can I do for you?
Not very much now, miss Grendel, but considerable later,
providing your terms aresatisfactory and my work
agreeable to you.
Nick said suavely.
I work entirely on a spacebasis.
Hmm.
That will suit me.
What is the character of thework Mr.
Henderson?
I am a writer of photo dramasfor leading New York.

(08:23):
Moving picture concerned.
Nick glibly informed her.
I have a long contract with afirm and require the help of a
competent, stenographer toprepare my scenarios.
The work is not difficult.
And we'll pay you well.
I will undertake it.
Said Kate nodding her finelypoised head.
I can discontinue it if founddistasteful.

(08:43):
Oh, certainly.
When will you want me to begin?
Hmm, probably on Monday when Iwill show you how I wish the
work done and discuss otherdetails with you.
That will be agreeable to me,Mr.
Henderson.
Said Kate unsuspiciously.
Nick had detected up to thattime.
Nothing beyond the pointsmentioned.
But he had hit upon a ruse forevoking, a self betrayal from

(09:06):
the woman as maybe inferred fromhis artful pretentions.
I will see you here Mondaymorning, then.
Said he apparently about to go.
But he immediately added as ifhit with an idea.
Oh, before leaving, by the way Iwill employ you to write a
letter from me to my firm, whomI wished to inform of my
intentions.

(09:27):
Will you take it in shorthandor.
I will typewrite it from yourdictation?
Ms.
Crandall, interposed taking aseat at one of the typewriters
and deftly adjusting a sheet ofblank paper.
Shall I date it from here, Mr.
Henderson.
If you please said Nick.
Ms Crandall's tapering fingersmoved swiftly over the keys.
Nick saw at a glance that shewas an expert.

(09:49):
He moved his chair near the endof the table.
To a position, enabling him towatch her face.
All ready, Mr.
Henderson.
She glanced at him and smiled abit, oddly.
Nick began to dictate.
Kline and Coster Eccles buildingNew York.
Dear sirs, nick continued amidcontinuing clicking.
I have today made arrangementswith a competent stenographer.

(10:10):
And we'll set to work upon theseries of dramas we were
discussing yesterday.
You may expect a scenario thefirst one early next week.
I think you will prefer for astarter, the sensational
detective drama.
I mentioned to you, featuringthe Peerless, American sleuth,
Nick Carter.
The story of the drama relatesto the mysterious disappearance

(10:31):
of a parish priest, who in spiteof his religious vows, false
desperately in love with a verywealthy and beautiful girl who.
The clicking.
Suddenly stopped.
Kate Crambles deft hands hadgone wrong.
She had struck several wrongkeys.
She reached for an eraser sayingquickly.
Uh, one moment, please.

(10:53):
Nick saw that she was turningpale, her arching dark browse
had knit perceptibly.
Oh, certainly he said suavely.
Kate erased the misprintedletters and readjusted the
traveler.
She then gazed steadily at thedetective for a moment as if
fain to read his mind.
And she then said, tersely.
Continue.
Uh, Nick went on without achange of countenance quite as

(11:15):
if they had been nointerruption.
Uh, the wealthy and beautifulgirl deeply in love with the
parish priest permits him torenounce his vows and pledges
her hand to him in marriage.
The shapely swiftly moving handsof the stenographer were
unsteady were trembling,visibly.
It appears however that anotherwoman suspects the intentions of

(11:37):
the parish priest A womaninvolved with him in the way,
ultimately revealed in thedrama.
And she subjects him to a secretespionage.
Which leads to a crime.
The clicking stopped shortagain.
Uh, Crimson flood imbued Katecrumbles cheeks for a moment.
Then faded quickly leaving herghastly pale.
She steadied herself with aneffort.

(11:59):
She reached up and removed thesheet of paper from the
typewriter, tearing it Andtossing it into a waste basket.
Excuse me.
She said curtly her dark eyes, turning upon Nick with a fiery
glance.
I have decided Mr.
Henderson, that I will not takeyour work.
Do not call here again, sir.
Good day.
She arose while speaking thenturned quickly and gaze from the

(12:22):
window.
Dear me, Nick exclaimed withaffected astonishment.
Why so Ms.
Crandall, wh-, what is themeaning of this sudden change of
mind?
I do not care to make anyexplanation.
She said sharply.
Attribute it to oh, a whim toCaprice or anything else that
suits you.
But you must have a reason.
So some cause for.

(12:42):
The work would be distasteful.
Snap Kate wheeling sharplyaround and facing him.
I shall not discuss the matter.
That settles it.
On the contrary, Ms.
Crandall, it does nothing of thekind Nick now said quite
sternly.
This matter will be settled onlywhen it is settled.
Right.
I know without your informing methe cause of the attitude you
have now taken.

(13:02):
And I know without yourinforming me, sir, that you are
not what you pretend you are.
Kate angrily retorted.
You are here with covertdesigns?
I have nothing more to say toyou.
Leave my office! Not until youhave told me what you know about
the disappearance of theReverend Austin Maybrick Nick
sternly rejoined.
Disappearance of Mr.
Maybrick.

(13:22):
That is what I said.
He has disappeared then.
You know that he has and.
The woman interrupted him with aderisive laugh.
I know nothing of the kind shesaid, curtly.
I neither know nor care anythingabout it.
I...
You know, at least what occurredin the rectory last evening,
Nick sharply interrupted.

(13:43):
You were spying outside of thelibrary window at the time.
You know, See here, Mr.
Whatever your name may be.
Kate cut in defiantly.
Anything that I know I shallkeep to myself.
You are a detective.
That's what you are, but I willput your wise to one thing right
off the real you haven't gotanything on me nor can you get
anything?

(14:03):
You cannot persuade frighten, nor intimidate me.
I will tell you nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
And you may go to thunder.
Get out of my office now or.
Or I will call a policemen andhave you ejected, that's all!
I'm done with you.
Nick came to a quick decision.
He saw plainly that the womanmeant what she said and could

(14:23):
not be turned then And there.
He abruptly changed his course.
Very well.
He replied.
It will not be necessary to calla policeman.
Nick turned with the last anddeparted.
He had directed Patsy to wait ina doorway on the opposite side
of the street.
In case he might want a signalhim from Kate Crandall's window.
Nick reasoned that she mightwatch from the window and see

(14:45):
him.
If he rejoined his waitingassistant.
He wrote a few lines in hisnotebook while descending the
stairs.
Then tore out the leaf andfolded it.
As he walked briskly up thestreet, a moment later He caught
Patsy's eye and dropped the wadof paper on the sidewalk.
Gee, there's something doing,thought Patsy.
He don't want to be seen againwith me.
He has dropped me writteninstructions.

(15:07):
Sauntering across the street,Patsy picked up the paper and
read what Nick had written.
Kate Grendel knows, but will notspeak.
Shadow her constantly untilotherwise directed.
Be governed by circumstances.
I'm off for home.
Phone me there of anydiscoveries.
What exactly does Kate Crandellknow?

(15:29):
And what did she see outside ofthe rectory?
How will Nick get her toconfess?

everything?
