Le narrateur, voyageur à la recherche de calme, vient tenir conversation au capitaine du bateau avec lequel il dîne tous les soirs. Ce dernier, plein d'histoires et d’esprit, porte un lourd secret qu’il va finir par lui révéler.
À travers les évocations de l’océan et des terres amazoniennes, ce récit porte en lui de nombreux éléments autobiographiques. Autant d’anecdotes du Cendrars aventurier qui pourraient être une forme d’introduction au cycle de ses mémoires, écrits de 1945 à 1949.
