Hello, world. Welcome back for another exciting episode of Fright Talk with
us, the Fright Talk guys.
We're super excited about this episode because our topic is,
well, about our favorite season.
It's 2024 Halloween, what's in store?
And I'm here with my brother from another mother and my mister,

(00:42):
who I cannot even resist, Nadine Tapps. How you doing, brother? brother.
I'm doing great. I'm so looking forward to this episode.
This is like we said before the show, this is our season.
I mean, we live it all year round, but this is the season we can immerse ourselves even more.
So much we see it everywhere, right? So I love anything Halloween I love and

(01:04):
I love the topic and I just want to dive in and just see what kind of different
things there are this year in comparison to last year and the years before that
people can enjoy themselves with and And just have this solid Halloween season.
And throughout this episode, everyone, whether you're listening to it on your
way in your car, you're on your way home, we love and appreciate the love.

(01:26):
So don't forget to find us on our social media feeds.
The links are down below inside the description.
Check us out. We like to hear your feedback. And if you're on Instagram or all
the other spaces, you can also post a nice comment.
Nothing mean a nice comment, too.
The other day, I got to start with this. You know it's the season when spirit

(01:49):
stores start popping up. That's right.
That's right. So last Friday, T, I had the pleasure of going into a spirit store.
And it was right after dinner. I was full off a Cracker Barrel.
I had my better half and my bestie, Bebe. The three of us are up to no good.
And I kept telling them, It's on this app somewhere. I know it's on this app. Where is it?

(02:11):
And lo and behold, it was right by Broccolini, the restaurant we know in Cooper
City, in the same shopping center.
So we walk in and I don't know, there's a certain excitement I get when I walk
into this store because it A, reminds me that we have arrived for our season.
And then even more so, I guess this is the fantasy of just the animatronics world.

(02:32):
And the costumes and the t-shirts, because they had a really cool t-shirt line
this year. And all the decor. I just thought it was so cool.
And the store was moderately, very moderately busy.
But the sales associates were great. I just felt like I was transported in another world.
And I was so happy. And I know they saw it in my face.

(02:53):
But folks, you got to understand, when you're horror lovers like us,
these moments matter. matter, especially when it's a season where we can talk
about all these things and not be looked at sideways or crazy,
at least for me when I'm at the office.
So it's really exciting for me. For you, what is it for you to,
you know, is it just the notices of it in the stores, in the community, or is it something else?

(03:16):
Well, it's funny because one of the best childhood memories I had was I was
maybe 13 or 14 years old, and I went with a friend of mine to Main Street in
Miami Lakes to see one of the Halloween movies. I don't remember which one, to be honest with you.
It was one of the sequels. And we went there to see it. We had to get the person
in front of us in line to buy us tickets because we weren't old enough.
But when in this little plaza, they had a pop-up Halloween shop.

(03:39):
And before all the animatronics, you remember, Billy, it was mostly math.
And he had saved up his money. And we went and he got himself a Michael Myers.
And I just remember that store so vividly and seeing all the masks on the wall.
And every time I go into Spirit Halloween or any kind of Halloween shop like that, it triggers that.
And, you know, every year, you know how it is. Every year they come out with

(04:00):
something different, something new.
I even follow on Facebook a page called Halloween Prop Makers.
And these are people that go all out and make these incredible props for outside
their house for the season.
So for me, those are always my memories. Now, where I live, you know, it's a very rural area.
Some Halloween decorations, but not the kind where you're like,

(04:24):
I don't, I have yet to see in the area I live in somebody like deck out their
house the way they used to in the city where they would just go on full scale, which I love.
And honestly, they have a good environment here for you. You got the woods around
you. This is the perfect place to create something creepy around your house.
But that's what it kind of you know it's always that's what it looks like for

(04:47):
me when i start going to the stores and start seeing the pumpkin spice you know
items that are coming out and when i start seeing like the fall leaves and all
of these things i'm like oh okay it's getting closer,
and i think that we could also talk about some of the things you see on tv right
some of the changing up and that are coming out and so now i have a question

(05:09):
for you billy how do you go into to a spirit Halloween and walk out without buying anything.
Oh, I did that last part.
Rap. So let me tell you what happened was. So, so here, listen, hear me out on this.
I guess for me, I don't, I expect to go again, but I should know better that

(05:33):
I need to do it now versus in season of October. Right.
So I think if you were looking for anything, a particular prop item fit,
you need to get it now folks in those stores. stores, if you're not ordering
it fully online, because it's not going to be there.
These stores only have certain stock of certain products.
For me, what I thought was super exciting about walking into a store like that,

(05:56):
they have gotten better.
And I feel like the whole theme, like there was a carnival theme when you walk
in and all the animatronics were set up and they were life-sized,
they were huge. It was super cool.
But when I'm on YouTube or on social media,
why do I feel like the spirit stores do so much
more everywhere else like i feel like i get an experience there's

(06:17):
a guy dressing up i'm like wait a minute what is going on here down
here people are nice but i'm not getting half of what i'm seeing
in these other spaces so whether i'm getting
it small or large with small scale scare actors
in the store what i appreciate about it
is that it gets us ready for a season and you
know what time it is when you see that orange sign take over

(06:38):
a temporary space yeah and it's it's
fascinating to me because this year for halloween halloween looks
different but we know it's there in the
world today for instance in covid do you remember the
drive-thrus were really popular and they were really effective yeah some of
the walkthroughs you and i went together i just felt they were so good at that

(07:00):
point and now when i've i've discovered is that the drive-thrus at least in
in the cities and i've been going on haunt world so shout out to the haunt world.com.
Looking at Haunted is another website that shows different attractions around the nation.
I don't see that many drive-thrus. We're seeing people ready to go back. They're back on ground.
They want buildings or they want forests or hayrides. So we're back to the tradition.

(07:25):
I just thought it was so interesting that we're now back there.
And at least for me, for the season, yeah, we're looking for haunted attractions.
And you've got the gatekeeper ones, such as Universal Studios,
and you have Haunt World and these other places.
But I'm also looking forward to some really small scale options and productions
that get recognized regionally or locally that are just as good,

(07:49):
if not better, because they use the timing factor to get things through.
So I think this season we're going to see a combination,
remixes of similar things that we know, new and expanded options for local venues
that are now trying to mirror, if not compete, at a grand scale of some of the
signature attractions.

(08:11):
And I will just add one final thought. More of, I definitely,
I've been thinking this, and that is seeing more house and home private attractions.
Like we have the property the space you have this space
i've been like oh it'd be nice if i could set up a little maze here
with so many scare actors and invite the community in but then i started thinking

(08:31):
okay so what does that invite me what do i invite into my private space right
so i you know so i start creating my own horror movie in my head instead of
just thinking about the opportunity what it could bring but i'm seeing that
a lot of those backyard hunts and attractions.
Some cities like celebration in florida does a really good job on that georgia
has a few of them And Tennessee has some as well.

(08:52):
I would love to see some of those. I discovered that over in Sunrise,
Florida, there's almost like a mini celebration Florida community that decorates the whole block.
Everyone goes all out for Halloween, for Christmas, and Thanksgiving.
Giving that's awesome i and i back to
your point about the drive-thru hunt i think that's

(09:13):
a great option for people that also there are
some people that love the spooky stuff but maybe they just had an ankle surgery
or maybe they can't move very well but they still want to get their hunt on
and i think that's a phenomenal way to do it i think it could still be scary
and it could still be effective and you know you've done quite a bit of those
drive-thrus haunted attractions and we know that they were pretty good.

(09:34):
So I think there needs to be more of that. I agree with you.
And it's just funny how Halloween looks different everywhere you go.
See, in the area I'm in, I don't have trick-or-treaters.
The reason is because the properties are spaced out and it's uphill driveway
and the kids will be gassed by the time they go up and down a few of the driveways.

(09:56):
But there's other things like they'll set up in a park and they'll have the
trunks open and they'll do the trunk-or-treat and everybody will give out some
candy and stuff like that, which I think is awesome too. And I know that they still do that.
I remember, do you remember, Billy? Did you ever...
Go to the mall as a kid. Yes, sir. I've been to a few times at Westland Mall in Miami.

(10:16):
Listen, Westland Mall had a good candy, okay? And speaking on that,
I think in 2024, I surely do remember that.
I think in 2024, because malls are now becoming abandoned spaces and being repurposed,
I find that we're going to get more people who, if the malls are still going to offer their options,

(10:38):
the trunk or treats are going to be more popular.
Popular in communities, at elementary schools, at colleges and universities.
And other, even workspaces.
Certain workforces are doing and offering their own little private affair.
I'll give you an example. The FBI building, which is right next to my campus,
they had a whole carnival out there the other day with horses and rides in a carousel.

(11:00):
I could see it through whatever they don't want us to see, but I could see and
I could surely hear it and see the horses.
And then last two, I want to say last Halloween, was it?
They had something think for halloween over there for all the employees kids
so what yeah so what
i'm finding is that now what's happening is that in the
workplace people are now making it a festive occasion

(11:21):
or fall fest of sorts where people are bringing in their family and getting
in on the fun even if it's at a private function so i think 2024 is going to
offer that and i think kind of that emanated from it's always been around but
i think it emanated from covid yeah people started They started creating their
little micro-celebrations.
I'm seeing that happen more commonly now. Interesting.

(11:44):
Yes. And you know, the thing is that there's no right or wrong way if you want
to celebrate Halloween however you want to celebrate Halloween.
I mean, you do a party every year, which is phenomenal.
And I think that some people...
When you have kids, and I don't have any children, praise the Lord,

(12:05):
but I think that sometimes when you have children and people celebrate Halloween,
sometimes they're like, well, you know, I got to do whatever it is to celebrate
for the kid, which is important, obviously, because that's part of their childhood
growing up and having those great memories.
But I also want to put it out there, adults, parents specifically,
find a way to celebrate for yourself.
If you're a spooky person and this is your season, you love Halloween,

(12:28):
have the kids enjoy it, but you have the right to enjoy it too.
And find something that you can immerse yourself in, especially this month.
It's not difficult to find an attraction coming up in October or to find movies
or books coming out. So I think that people that enjoy the season need to find
a ways to immerse themselves.
And now is a time we live in such a great time where you you can find so many

(12:53):
different options to enjoy yourself for whatever season you're in.
I agree. I think there is something special about this 2024 Halloween,
because no matter your age and if you're into it, even if you are like a secret
closeted Halloween lover.
I think what's happening is that people are finding their ways like,
oh, well, I don't usually go to a party.

(13:14):
But if I know the person in 2024, I think more people who are not into Halloween,
but if they're invited by someone they know more intimately,
they're more likely to go to the party, even if they're going in just all black
or they're wearing, you know, some some some cute cat ears or a light costume.
I get it. And I think what we're going to see more here is that people are going

(13:35):
to just connect the net. Matt, another thing I thought about too,
remember as a child, and we don't see this anymore, and I really want to see
what happens here, television, television and film.
As a child, I could not wait to see the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.
Absolutely. In fact, I was in Cracker Barrel last week, and there was a Great
Charlie Brown shirt that I bought.

(13:57):
The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I bought it there. I was like,
okay, this is crazy. How did I find that here? It's perfect with the pumpkin patch and everything.
But it's not coming on television anymore. and i learned
the reason why that is is because the whole
there's a whole like schultz family not in family but there's some kind of royalty
or intellectual property aspect of it and they're not just airing it anymore

(14:20):
and so that's why we're not seeing some of these classic specials that we're
used to seeing and so now i'm like well fine thank goodness i got the dvd or unfortunately,
people are bootlegged and put it bootlegged and put it on youtube so but we're
not seeing a lot lot of films that are horror coming out do you agree on that
i do agree well like for example beetle just beetle just yeah well right so

(14:41):
we gotta need to go see it and you know that what
i found interesting the new nosferatu movie comes out on christmas which is
like wait a minute not halloween i do believe though that in october what i
would say would be kind of the the bigger one would be terrifier 3 is coming
out yes so that one should be very popular but nosferatu to,

(15:02):
and from what I've seen, it looks really good.
They're going to release it on Christmas, and I think that's kind of fantastic
to be honest with you. Yeah.
But we're not seeing a whole lot. I mean, granted, you see it on Netflix mainly
on Shudder, I'm seeing some stuff, but I'm not seeing a whole lot of mainstream horror released.
Yeah. Now, you have Shudder. Anything interesting on Shudder?

(15:24):
There are some Shudder exclusives that are being produced right now.
I got a notice the other day, and I needed to log in and see it.
Something about Creepshow. because they seem to own the Creepshow franchise now.
They're making new episodes, modern episodes of it.
I'm seeing that. They have a lot of the classics are there, like Hellraiser,
some of the Halloween. Somehow, they were able to retrieve them.

(15:47):
They're all in there. A lot of the classics, the Evil Dead is there.
A lot of the classic horror films are on Shudder.
I've gotten into something in the last couple months that I'm going to share with people.
They might want to do it too, but it's up to them. So it's kind of throwback, kind of not.
When I moved from one state to another, I had a large DVD collection.

(16:12):
I got rid of a lot of it because I'm like, well, I stream everything, this and that.
But then some time ago, I realized that, well, if you're paying for a streaming
service, which I pay for, you know, Max, Netflix, Hulu, all that stuff.
If you're paying for a streaming service, even though you're paying,
if there's something you enjoy, like horror film, they could pull it whenever they want.

(16:33):
And they don't have it so my guilty pleasure lately has been going to thrift stores and finding.
Horror dvds and buying them and just building
a horror dvd collection so that if they ever pull one of these movies
off and i'm like you know what i really liked this i
want to go back and watch it i bought freddie versus jason the
other day granted not my favorite horror movie but it

(16:55):
was still versus jason on dvd so for folks
that are listening it's not a bad idea
to go out there and it's kind of throwback because you're like hey i got
this dvd of an old horror movie even
got the creep show movie on dvd yes at
the dollar store at the garage at a garage sale but

(17:15):
even still like folks are giving that away yeah and so because everybody streams
most of their things now that's true i just drink most of the stuff anyway but
it was just kind of a guilty pleasure it would now i'm getting this idea of
like doing like a dvd trick-or-treating where people go and you just put like an old DVD,
a horror DVD in their trick-or-treat basket.

(17:35):
Now, what do you think? Now, I know trick-or-treating in itself is for kids, right?
What idea can we throw out there, Billy, where adults can trick-or-treat?
Because it's weird if you're dressed up and you're going door-to-door as a grown
man asking for candy, all right?
So what ideas, something that adults can do?

(17:56):
So let's put the, we know the haunted houses, stuff like that.
What else do you think that adults could do where they could kind of partake
in that and maybe not necessarily get candy, but get something else out of it?
Well, I think if we were to do some of the throwbacks of some of the classic
games of Halloween, such as bobbing for apples.
Yeah. Okay, folks, I get it. You might want to bob for something liquor related.

(18:19):
Okay, I know you're going to do the jello shots. We're going to do blood shots. We get it.
But I'm thinking if we could just scale back a bit and bring in some of the
fall fest games into it, one classic would be that.
I would think another example. Now, this one is controversial.
I myself wouldn't do it. I know as much as I love horror, I chicken out on this.

(18:40):
And that is the Ouija board.
The whole idea of conjuring.
I definitely don't want to do it in my house. I don't want to be part of it.
But I'm not afraid if it happens. I'd be there. But also, too,
I'm like, I don't know, why am I mystically concerned about it? It's weird.
So I know that some folks could commune with the dead.

(19:01):
I would also think that there's a lot of shows that I'm noticing that's very popular in 2020.
Into it like the past few years but i see a lot of them on now on
fever like the app oh yeah and that is some of the sound
and the orchestra shows by candlelight that are playing some of the classic
horrors inspired music selections and folks get to watch it with a light show

(19:23):
that is bouncing off the wall which is super cool so i'm seeing that folks are
coming out and celebrating the Phantom of the Opera in that way.
And they're embracing almost like performing arts with visual arts because the visuals are on the wall.
I would say botanical gardens are getting in on it too.
Many botanical gardens in some of the major cities are

(19:46):
now hosting Halloween-oriented walkthroughs
at night that are either ghost tours or just
well-lit tours with all kinds of themed you
know neon lights out there
and all those kind of lights out there so i'm finding that there's
now okay now we got the botanical gardens getting in on it you know
so it's really neat to see that the

(20:08):
list is long depending where you're at but everybody's
getting in on it now if you're in salem you're lucky
as f-u-c-k but because it's
like you get to get all the things that you
know you get to get all the food and i mean food and the stays and
the fun but they have a lot of cool attractions there
that are just noteworthy and i think that i heard that they're salem's street

(20:35):
stuff i haven't been there and been there once years ago but now it's similar
to that what is that festival that goes on down during halloween in the keys
oh what do you think yeah yeah yeah Fantasy Fest,
it is very similar.
Yeah you should watch some YouTube it is very intriguing minus the drunks and

(20:59):
all that but there's some drunks there too,
I, myself, would not go there in October.
I would wait, you know, and I would consider going there in an off season or a spring season.
But, yeah, I'm watching the YouTube channel, and I'm enamored with their Halloween

(21:19):
museums and monster museums.
Witch Museums. Well, there was somebody, somebody I know through social media,
they went to Salem a couple years ago, and I asked them, and I said, I said, well, how was it?
And what they told me was that they did go during the fall because,
of course, everybody wants to go during the fall.
And what they said was it was phenomenal, but they didn't stay,

(21:40):
they didn't reside inside Salem proper.
They kind of resided because it was too crazy and too expensive,
so they kind of resided on the outside and then came in and they went to the
Witch Museum. They took all these amazing pictures.
I mean, it's just, that is something that I'm envious.
I'm envious for people that live there. And maybe the people that live there
are annoyed because of all the traffic and whatever,

(22:00):
but people stop complaining it's turk dollars so that is
some that is a trip that i would like to do one day i'd like to
go in the month of october to salem
because i i never have well you know t if you're in i'm in you know i was telling
my better half about it and say well when do you we got to check it out i'm
not i would do exactly what you're saying there stay outside of of the the main

(22:22):
area and really take it in and so here's a thought though you know every year
i go to horror night and that's coming up next week.
You know, someone asked me, I was telling my students, a couple of student leaders
about it. They said, well, how do you feel?
I said, this is almost, if I'm not mistaken, this is the 30th year I'm going. I'm like, what?
Cause I went at maybe the 29th year. Cause I started in 96.

(22:44):
So I guess you don't count the year you're on. So what would that make me?
Year 28 or 29? One of the two. And so I'm excited to go.
Not because I'm going to get scared, but maybe because of the tradition that it brings.
And I get to go with, you know, folks like, you know, all of our people we know
who just are okay with just having a little fun.

(23:07):
That's not crazy intense. tense like if you know folks
it's going to be intense right but for those of us who
a little bit more seasoned at this scary stuff it's not
you know Halloween Horror Night is a great attraction but to me
I'm not going there to get scared I'm going there to have fun that's right that's
right I mean and I'm looking forward to that part the fun part now Billy in

(23:28):
because I know that they choose a different theme every year have you ever been
in the in all the years you've gone have you ever been i don't want to use the
word disappointed with the theme but have you ever been,
have you ever found a theme to be just not on par
with all the other stuff because i know they do amazing every year you're has
there ever been a theme and i know they have different houses different things

(23:49):
but they generally have a general theme right for for the not they do but they
don't okay anymore so what's happening now it's a good question i'll answer
the initial part, which was,
yeah, there were, I think it was just one year or two.
I thought the grandma theme was meh, you know, but then when they did the attribute

(24:11):
to the classic icon of the former theme people over the years,
and she was there, she's the hell out of us.
So that was different. But I just thought that the grandma year theme,
it was like, okay, okay. She's grandma with red eyes.
Oh, but the, the, the marketing was good. It was good for his day.
What I'm finding now is that now they've become so commercial that now,

(24:32):
like this year, one of the houses... And then the houses are not always the same at every location.
So, for instance, in Universal Orlando, I mean, Orlando, where I'm going,
there is the Insidious House.
Okay. There's Quiet Place, too, there.
And I'm missing something else. But in Ghostbusters, those are like the three

(24:55):
main ones. So you see the theme is those three?
Yeah. It's around that, but it's not about anything.
But the one in California is going to have a weekend tribute house again. Huh.
And I was like, hmm. And then in Singapore, they're doing a 14-hour horror night.
14 hours. 14 hours. So let's think about that for a second. I mean,
I started thinking about it.

(25:15):
I said, I could count the number of hours we're there. So we'll probably get there about six, right?
By the time we walk out of the gate, it's like between 12 and 1 on average.
12 to 1.30 in the morning when we get out of the gate. So we're there,
what, seven-some hours? Six, seven, seven-and-a-half hours? 14 hours of horror night?
That's crazy. I mean, it's amazing, but it's not, you know, it's crazy.

(25:37):
Because I'm thinking, okay, you have an express pass. And by the way,
folks, you should go with it. If not, don't.
But if you have an Express Pass, you get to do things much faster and you get
to take breaks. You get to hang out.
You know, so folks are now, I will tell you, the price is astronomical.
It's $1.70 a person. That's pretty fast.

(25:57):
That's the Express. Oh, that's the Express. Not including the admission,
which is like another $92 for the day we're going.
So I remember when the tickets were $29.
That's true. Yeah. Yeah, but it was three houses. Now they have eight scare
zones also and 1,100 houses.
So it has been 1,100 houses for the past decade, actually.

(26:18):
That's been the regular. So we're getting our monies. Plus all the rides you
get to ride with that too.
But we're noticing that. So I just thought it was interesting that prices are
going up for scare them. I'll give you one more thought.
In Treetop Parks over here in South Florida, which is in Dading,
the haunt is there. They have four different haunted house trails there,

(26:41):
and it's run by this impressive organization.
And so this year, thinking about going, thinking, because I don't know if I
want to be eating by the mosquitoes.
Oh, yeah. It's outdoors in South Florida in October. We don't know how these
Octobers are anywhere in the South, period.
So I say, you know what? We'll see. If I do, I'm going to wear sleeves.

(27:01):
You know, I'm going to have on sleeves. I'm going to have on pants, some socks.
We'll go through. There's four trails. It's gotten a lot of rave reviews.
This is their fifth year doing it.
So, yeah. Yeah, so I'm wondering where all this will lead, but I just will say
the attractions are cool, but the attractions are more costly than they've ever
been before because of the upkeep in inflation.

(27:21):
Oh, and if you're going with a family, I mean, that's a fortune, really.
And they have VIP. They have a VIP area for 21 and up, like a private bar and
an AC place and all this stuff.
It's very interesting. interesting i'm very impressed with
the level and layers of scaredom that
that's all for now but it's costing more for fun now

(27:44):
billy i want to do something for the folks listening really quick
we don't want you and i to recommend an
obscure perhaps book movie and
show that our listeners could dive into
that perhaps they may have not done so already so nothing
as big or as popular that we would know like the

(28:05):
halloween nightmare on elm street maybe something a little bit more
obscure that somebody says well you know
to have a more economical halloween but
still totally get into the season i want to
read a spooky book i want to watch a show or a movie that's spooky too because
that's going to be a lot cheaper than you know some of the other attractions

(28:26):
so i would like both of us to kind of recommend some of those things so if you'd
like we could start with a movie and I'm going to, I'm going to go,
I'm going to give you a moment to think, right?
I was about you, you're the process one. And I am going to give one that was famous.
They're remaking it, but I recommend to see the original and I don't,

(28:47):
I don't, I'm sure you can rent it streaming somewhere.
And that is the people under the stairs.
And you can get a whole, I remember seeing the people under the stairs in the
movie theater and being so creeped out because the concept was phenomenal.
So I know they're remaking it. I don't know when it comes out.
I haven't heard too much about it, but I know that they're remaking it.

(29:09):
I like, I'm an original guy. I like sticking to the originals.
And so that's the movie I would recommend if you haven't seen it yet.
The People Under the Stairs, the original one, which I would assume would be early 90s.
Billy, what about you? I want to go and give a classic. That was a really good
one. That was such a good one.
I would say The Haunting of Hill House. Both the reading and watching the...

(29:32):
I appreciate both the original, which was great.
Great original black and white, folks. No spoilers. I'll just say this.
It is classic. Scare them.
And I think it's such finely done for its time.
And I would also suggest the modern, the 2000, the 99-2000 version was pretty cool.

(29:53):
So reading those or watch reading it
or watching those two variations i think
it would be super cool for people to see and i think that
shirley jackson's work is the only novel well it's not true well
at least it's only novel she published but she published short stories it's
a fascinating novel and look at
all the shows that have been spawned or inspired by that we

(30:14):
see on netflix and the manners that we see it's
pretty cool yeah yeah and i for the
book i'd like to recommend man the people under this
another people in this here sorry the flowers in the attic by
bc andrew oh that one
it's funny because that one is more creepy than
scary it's a little bit of both but definitely bc

(30:35):
andrew's classic the flowers in the attic if
you haven't read that one you should definitely pick it up and i
wanted to i just want to get the folks listening to us some things
that they could jot down and be like you know what let me check these things out
maybe they've seen it maybe they haven't if they haven't it
kind of opens their eyes to that some of the stuff that
doesn't get the attention that's mainstream with some of the others so t how

(30:56):
about this idea think of a cult classic that's a little bit further up toward
the latter late 20th century or into the 21st what would you recommend that's
not iconic of a major monster that has a a final girl theme.
Per se like i'll give
you one trick-or-treat i love that movie for some reason i love sam i love this

(31:22):
many stories within the stories and the stories tie together i think it's a
really nice treat folks i think if you and and one more i think another one
13 ghosts 13 ghosts was great,
I think it was great. It was so underrated.
Look at it today. It's underrated.
Yes. Yes. I think I would go.
Oh, no, but you said it should have a, you said female theme,

(31:45):
right? No, it should not have a final girl theme.
You know, like a Halloween, right? Like a Halloween. Okay.
I want to say the Purge.
I want to say the purge. Now, the first one had that creepy factor more than scary,
but it was creepy because this whole idea that there's one time a year that

(32:07):
people can do whatever they want and what the human mind is capable of is a
scary thought within itself.
But the second one, I think, was scary. You know, it got to that level where,
you know, you have that anarchy going on for this one day.
I'd actually go with the purge, believe it or not. I think the purge is a classic example.
That is a really good way. And I want to give props to several theme attractions for recreating that.

(32:33):
Yeah. How many Horror Night, for instance. And I saw another one.
Where was I? I was somewhere else. There was a, what was I?
I was in, I was in Virginia and I'm talking, I'm talking maybe like maybe nine
years ago and they remade like a little scare moment that was like it.
Holy moly. And I told my college students, I said, listen, I'm mad.

(32:54):
I'm going to be nice to you all because I want you to come looking for me on the verge.
You know, these young people were something else, you know, but it is definitely
a splatterpunk oriented in terms of genre.
I think it's a great one. I will go with another one that because I think when
people think of Halloween.
So if you think of Halloween tea, what's the first monsters that come to mind?

(33:16):
Dracula, witches, Frankenstein. And in my brain, when I'm saying these,
it's the classic images that are popping into my mind.
Of it like when i say dracula i'm not thinking bram
stoker i'm a movie i'm like i'm
not thinking gary oldman i'm thinking bella lagosta and frankenstein
i'm thinking boris karloff just because that's the classic image that popped

(33:38):
and i'm not trying to date myself or anything it's just that that's the classic
image that pops into my head though the werewolf one in my my brain goes more
modern day werewolf like some
of the 80s movies like you know werewolf in london where We'll compare it.
So that's kind of where my brain goes when I think of those classic monsters.
And how about you? What image comes to your mind? Two.

(34:01):
Some of the images that come to mind for me for some of the classics that represent
horror, definitely The Vampire and how much it has transcended many cultures and spaces.
I would also say zombies are ghouls or fiends in that regard.
Interestingly enough, though, Distinct Society, their theme this year for the

(34:22):
haunted attraction is called Extraterrestrial Nightmare.
And so I thought it was interesting that they decided on that.
And I said, okay, I want to see how this goes in the next month.
But I'm noticing that this younger generation, Generation Z,
is very fascinated by the life.
And let me say, also, governmentally and everywhere else, people are more acknowledging

(34:43):
unidentified flying objects.
Or, you know, these things that we covered that before.
But it's just really nice to see that now, okay, now it's at the table.
And it's beyond just aliens, you know?
Do you feel social media has changed, Halloween?
It has. I mean go on your feed right now have you
seen it like I feel like my analytics are well

(35:04):
for you and me because what we do we write attention but even
it's just like it's even like cookies like baking shows yeah it's true like
I like the other day like when it's Halloween why am I okay watching a baking
show that's showing how they're taking some food and some confection too like
what am I doing with my life like this is crazy you know and people are doing
it and they're in the end And the judges are dressing in theme. I think it's super cool.

(35:27):
So, yeah, I think the cooking shows and the home, what is it called? The Food Network?
The Home Now, yeah. They're doing some really cool, even home,
the HGTV is doing some cool things around Halloween as well.
That's inspiring. So it's nice to see that other shows are getting in on it.
Even the celebrity shows, like I'm expecting Kelly Clarkson or Jennifer Hudson
to dress like something this year.

(35:48):
Right. In the spirit of the season as they do their jobs. So it's like,
okay, I'm okay with that.
I'm okay with the world, or at least America, embracing Halloween in a fun way in even common spaces.
You know what I would love to do, Dylan? I haven't done it enough. Let me say this.
I have not explored enough what Halloween looks like in other countries.

(36:10):
Now, I have a general idea because I used to teach history, so I know history
pretty well, and I know how Halloween started.
I know all that stuff. I know how it was once celebrated, how we got the Halloween
that we know of today, but I'm not very familiar with how it's celebrated in
Europe, if at all, in some spaces.
So I think there is a comparison between the United States and other countries

(36:34):
when it comes in that regard.
Those of you who are listening, can you give us some feedback on that?
We'd like to know. T brings up a really good point. I was watching a YouTuber
the other night, this guy whose name I never remember, but I like watching his
channel because he's always looking at American life.
And he wants to so long here and be here.
He said that in his world, because he's like, yeah, I know you're American.

(36:55):
He has a British accent or mid-20s. I know you in America love their Halloween,
but you know in Britain they're doing a lot over here too.
And in Brazil it's now celebrating American version and style of Halloween.
And so I think also we're seeing that influence of American Western life on
those cultures will lend themselves to the commercializing of it in those other countries too.

(37:16):
So you're right though. We need to do a deeper dive there to see what's happening.
What's happening in these other spaces. In comparison to what we experienced
in the United States, because a lot of what we experienced is traditional.
It's changed. That tradition changed with COVID because there wasn't really a choice.
But proud of how everybody adapted to that.

(37:38):
Hey, let's do drive-thru haunted houses and let's do the trunk retreats and
let's celebrate in a safe way because we had to.
And the pandemic was an awful thing. But it also sparked a lot of creativity
in people to find ways to still enjoy a Halloween holiday.
And so as we move forward for what's in store 2024, it's odd because there's

(38:02):
now a ton of these big movies coming out. So maybe this is the year.
This is the year, Billy, we're in 2024 for Halloween.
Maybe we need to go back. and maybe it's a year that we have to go back and
appreciate some of the things that were some of the creatives that were already
made whether that be haunted houses whether that be books that have been published

(38:23):
many years ago or whether that's old movies that have that or shows that have
that scare maybe this is the year.
2024 to go backwards to appreciate those
cult classes i think that's a brilliant idea
and you remind me in the world
of modern emerging technologies people want some of
the most basics of connection so yes they

(38:45):
remember during covid those zoom parties remember the
remember the the scares there's even like like escape rooms that are virtual
and horror based online line fully online but there's nothing like being in
the moment and feeling like you're in the moment by physically being in a space
so i'm thinking to your point if we revive the classics,

(39:08):
and and bring those back in or remaster them in some way i think the generations
will get an appreciation of what we've always enjoyed i think so too and you
know i do understand that younger generations are a little bit desensitized
because of the internet and social media.
However if they can kind of disconnect
from that for just a couple of hours to dive into something

(39:31):
scary where you have to fully immerse yourself and you're watching a scary movie
you fully immerse yourself as opposed to be like oh that's not scary but a moment
you know what i mean if they can fully immerse themselves then i think they
can garner that appreciation for it and And, you know,
our people are the type of people who appreciate all the spookiness year round.

(39:55):
Those are our type of people. But also there are people who are discovering it for the first time.
Maybe there are people who have just never been able to, for whatever reason, celebrate Halloween.
And this is the year they're like, well, I want to celebrate it some way, somehow.
And folks, there you have it. You know, 2024, we ask what's in store.

(40:17):
Ultimately, I think for all of us, Halloween is what you make it.
If you still are able to do so, even if it's basic, and even if you have an
inkling of excitement for this season, try to enjoy it.
Try to find some meaning or value in it. The one thing we didn't talk about was the candy.
The candy, that's right. That's right.

(40:38):
Listen, for those of y'all listening, you have trick-or-treaters.
Don't you dip those trick-or-treaters. If you put a bowl out and you put,
please take one, they're not going to take one. That bowl is gone.
So if you're there and you're monitoring, don't give them the cheap candy.
Give them something good before kids are walking in, in the heat probably, to get some candy.
That's the least you could do for them. Help them out. Don't be like me where

(41:00):
I ended up getting a eraser and a pencil when I went trick-or-treating.
But T, tell me though, it is nice that you're able to get some of your favorite
flavors of your candy at Bulk.
Oh, you know what I mean? And for me, you know, for, for me,
at least it's that almond joy. I love almond joy.
And I could, if I like that, you know, the chocolate Hershey or whatever,

(41:22):
the mounds, whoever makes the Mars, the Mars set that comes with all of them.
I'm like, this thing has all my Kit Kats, the dark chocolate.
It has all the stuff I like. I don't still want candy horns.
I know some people love candy corn. I'm not a candy horn fan for some reason.
I don't mind the little pumpkins.
You remember the little pumpkins that taste good? Pumpkins, I'll do. I'll tear those up.

(41:45):
Yeah, the pumpkins are good, too. I know exactly what's... It's hard.
The other day, Chris, my wife, she went to do groceries. She came back,
and because it's pumpkin spice season starting up, she brought a bag of pumpkin
spice yogurt-covered pretzels. And I'll tell you, they were delicious.
Mostly anything with pumpkin tastes phenomenal. I love pumpkin flavored stuff.

(42:08):
I love it. pumpkin bread pumpkin cookies pumpkin
cake i even had a pumpkin flan once it
was very interesting they made it more like the cheesecake version of flan but
it had a nice little flavor and it was very but i do it again absolutely all
right i think the candy though you know today folks kids still like their candy

(42:30):
and so do adults so we go into that store and we see that bag.
We politely grab one and stick it over into our bag because we know that's going to last us six months.
But also, too, we're not necessarily getting it for others.
The trick-or-treaters aren't coming.
At least where I live and where T is, we're not seeing trick-or-treaters.

(42:53):
So as a result, who's going to eat all this candy?
So it's fun to do, though. And I think that's super exciting.
For me, of course, the decorating. Not only the decorating, but the dressing
up. I don't know what I'm going to do this year.
I'm going to figure that out. I think that will be fun to see what comes out of it.
But the cool thing about Halloween, folks, when you need a costume,

(43:14):
just go look in your closet. Find what you have. Go where you are.
It's the one holiday that what you look like does not matter.
You could be your most comfortable at Halloween. That's true.
You could be your most comfortable. That is absolutely true. Yeah.
That is absolutely true. true yeah how did how did we even forget
the whole candy port portion halloween come

(43:34):
on it's like what's up with that but yeah
we i mean listen the truth is that
the difference is that now we're adults we don't have to rely on our parents
to buy us candy so when we go to the store we're like oh a bag of candy we'll
get it you know and it's like oh well we don't have trickle and also there's
a long time where like i'm gonna buy this bag in case we have trick-or-treaters
going full well we weren't gonna have no trick-or-treaters and i'd be in that

(43:57):
bag it's a good way of putting in the guilt of somebody else.
I have to eat it because these kids didn't show up. It's like, damn, I got this candy.
And then all of a sudden you eat them two or three. Oh, I want something sweet.
Because some days you don't want a heavy sweet. You want a light sweet and you
go and get, you reach into that bag.
And so I'm super excited about that. And above all, folks, we hope that you'll have a great season.

(44:19):

That's going to be very fun. So, actually, that is not true.

(45:04):
I'm looking at the dates wrong. We're going to be looking at Halloween costume review.
But in that one, Billy, that one, the surprise is we're going to be showing it.
Yes. Our goal is to show on that one, folks. That's in two Wednesdays from now.
So that would be fun if you all could participate, because we're going to be
looking at some costumes, and we promise to try to behave.

(45:27):
I mean, I'm not promising anything. We're going to tear these things up.
I'm going to say my comments, but I wanted to say, because I had a moment that
I had the other night at the Spirit store.
When you start looking at costumes, it looks so great on the model.
And then you go for it.
I was like billy take that all and reconsider

(45:50):
your life okay not happening you look
like a little oompa loompa out there when you try like a pimp
you end up looking like an m okay and so definitely come
back for that so yes on two weeks from now
we're going to be covering halloween costume reviews and then after that in
october we hit the small town versus large town one final thing folks we're
going to be posting things on social media soon about this october 30th t and
