Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, if you're a fan of Mark Simov hunters and
collectors and you missed our chat with him earlier this
morning talking about the Red Hot Summer Tour, you can
catch up anywhere anytime to search for Gaily and Emily
J through iHeart Radio and we'll also have another chat
a bit later on this morning. For people who like love, Actually,
you're going to get excited.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
That's when it's a hot tomato. Hey, it's front page
to the Bully today and it's been going around the
last twenty four to forty eight hours. Plan to tear
down the iconic surf club overlooking the country's most famed
surf break has been resisted by locals. Right, So we're
talking about Rainbow Bay Surf Club, Surf Life Saving Club,
(00:36):
the big beautiful balcony on the outside. I mean we've
done outside broadcasts there from when the surfing was on,
and it's just it's iconic, isn't it. But so and
obviously it's in one of the best spots probably in
the world.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
It's the most beautiful when you can spot is just yeah,
just look all the way up the coast having lunch,
you know.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
So, I mean it's going to be a debate over
you know, the building being almost heritage then and move
or the versus, hey, let's move forward and develop. They're
even talking about having lawn bowls on the roof of
the new building.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
So I'm looking at the plans here.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
For the community. I guess if you're into lawn bowls.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, the plans are quite extensive. So basically, they want
to take away the road at the front of the
surf club where you sort of drive up to have a.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Look around Snapper.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
They want to turn that into a big walkway so
you won't be able to drive up there anymore. And
then the roof is going to be grass and blend
into the park that's above it, Yes, which looks pretty cool.
It seems like they're keeping a nod to the balcony.
The balcony looks very similar to what is currently there
with keep.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
That that's iconic standing on the balcony.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, but they don't have the sign from where you'd
rather be, and that's a really iconic sign.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
At least when they took down the Pink Poodle, they
kept the sign there.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
We can still drive past that.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
The thing is is that the plans do look good
and the building is needing repair desperately. How long has
it been since you've been there for lunch, Gaily.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Ah, probably within five years. I'd say I.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Went there recently with my parents because they're there and
they love it, and the balcony is rickety. I actually
didn't want to sit out on the balcony just with
the kids and everything too.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
I was like, no, we'll sit inside. Thanks.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
So there's no doubt that the club definitely needs a
huge renovation, rejuvenation, restoration. It's just that these plans even
taking away the road that's pretty hectic.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Well, it's a big change. And look, some locals just
they love it, so they want to keep it. I
get it because it's part of some people. We're at
the front of that. They're thirty five now and they
remember being out the front of that surf club and
being a member there when they were five years old,
starting off with nippets or thereabouts. So there's sixty.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Year old sixty year olds that remember that.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, but it'd be nice to have a beautiful building
in the spot as well for the local community go
and enjoy, which.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
It could still have if it was restored and money
was spent on restoration, but we thought we'd open up
the phones because it's gone nuts online. What do you
think does it need a whole rejuvenation or just restoration?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
What did you see online? Did you feel like it
was pro or.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Against everyone's saying leave it alone because there's been so
much development at Rainbow and it's not what we grew
up with. And it is the most beautiful beach. And
I understand that so many people want that land to
build big high rises on it, but it's just taking
away the personality of the area.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
For me, it's in the same spot, right, It's.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
In exactly the same spot.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
And like I said, they'll take the road away and
extend like the Ocean Way. I guess that's probably a
part of it, you know, But then change happens because
I don't remember it because I'm too young, but my
mum sent remembers that there used to be an ocean
pool there. Yeah, and that's not there anymore. I'd love
the ocean pull back. I mean, I don't ever remember it,
as I said, but it'd be perfect. There's still remnants
of it and it's fun to jump in there.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
And so is it council? Is it the council that
makes the final decision.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Yeah, this is all.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Council plans and you can go and have a look
at them online and see what you think.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
I think it'll change. I think it'll happen definitely then probably,
But having said that, we often do this and we
like to hear what the people of the Gold Coast think.
What it means to you first of all, but also
do you think they should go forward and put a
full new building up like they did at Karuwa. Yes,
that had pushed back as well, probably not as much
(04:42):
as this.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
And now Cara facility.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
It is great facility.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
So yeah, give us a call and let us know
double five seven one, and I don't give us a call.
You could's got one hundred bucks to spend at Soaker
bath house.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
What do you think
