Speaker 1 (00:00):
Want it's it on hot tomato, We Gaily and Emily

(00:02):
Jade right now, joined by Acting Mayor Donna Gates on
the phone.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Donna, good morning, morning, EJ.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
How are you, Donzie?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm good? Tell you?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Are you safe and sound?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
I am safe and sound a little worse for wear
in the house department, but I'm safe and sound, and
so's everyone else.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Okay, So your house is it hanney trees or just leakages?
What's happened for you?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
A big leak in my kitchen roof?

Speaker 1 (00:28):
I had, Dear Alfred.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, after all I've done no helped everyone, and Alfred goes, no,
I'm going to get Donzie. I know.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Yeah. Well look if you get me molled, I know
someone you can call. Donna. I will look after you.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
But what is the general consensus for the Gold Coast
this morning? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
We shouldn't be laughing because it's not It's not over yet,
EJ and Gaily. It's it's likely to get much worse today,
with extreme thunderstorms rain up to two hundred and fifty
five millimeters over a six hour time frame and wind
gusts up to one hundred and twenty k so I think,

(01:11):
you know, it's really important that people understand they still
should stay home and off the roads for about the
next twenty four to thirty six hours. We all have unpredictable.
This thing's been. It's been incredibly unpredictable. But because we
on the Southern Band, that's why we're going to still
have extreme weather conditions there are.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
We're getting lots of calls Donner and chucking them on
air because now people if they're on the roads, they're
searching for fuel and ice for their generators and everything.
So right, yeah, that's a lot of people ringing through
letting us know where the ice is at and where
the fuel is at.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Well, fuel for generators has surfaced as a real problem.
I think everyone was well prepared in getting their generators,
but maybe overlook the fuel supply. We know that the
Gold Coast University Hospital is working from a generator and
there was submergency and getting some fuel to them. Same
with John Flynn. It's lost power as well, and two

(02:12):
of our evacuation centers also lost power. We're planning to
keep the three centers open, but we're looking for more
because there are going to be delayed. We've got one
hundred and twenty thousand dwellings without power. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Have you got power where you are, Donna?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yes, I do. I'm fortunate. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, it's just gone out in my area. I've had
the kids call up seeing yeah are there? Okay? But yes, okay.
So what else do we need to know, Donna? Since
you're up to date with everything having at the disaster
Management center.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Okay. We need people to stop stealing the sandbags because
that are holding down the traffic signs. The traffic signs
are there as a warning to people if roads are flooded.
We need people to be mindful. They need to stay
in place. And the fact that if the winds do
get to one hundred and twenty k today, those signs

(03:08):
can become projectiles as well. So that's number one. They
need to not take selfies down by the beach side,
and they actually need to stop going down to the beach.
We've had a lot of damage to infrastructure along the
beach front. It may look like a platform's okay, but
it has the potential that it's been totally undermined and
is unsafe. So a huge escarpment from Southport all the

(03:31):
way down to Nobby's I'm not too sure about southern
Gold Coast because that was the area last night that
received the major emergency alert about riverine flooding, So Crumbin
and Telebudjara there was major riverine flooding last night. It
has been lessened this morning with a move back to

(03:54):
watch an act rather than an emergency alert, So that
was good news. But as the day move on, because
of the saturation of everything, it's likely we will have
quite extensive flooding. So people still need to be careful
on the roads if they need to go out, and
if they don't need to go out, pre stay home.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
So you reckon. The next twenty four hours is pivotal
in as far as people's safety.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
I do, I do, and I mean we're all week.
We've given worst case scenarios because that's the best we
can do with something as unpredictable as this cyclone Alfred
has been. I suppose in one way we've been fortunate,
we've had plenty of lead time, but it has created
in some instance as a feeling that, oh, this isn't

(04:40):
going to happen, and now that it's crossed landfall, there's
a feeling from a lot of people as I understand
it that we're over the worst and we're not okay.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Well, that's really good to hear, because there is a
we've been talking about the two camps of people, the
people that got really prepared and the people that were
just not caring about it, and that's still happening. The
people not caring about it, like city, I told you so,
and the people that were caring about it feel a
bit like, well, have I been hoodwinked? And you're saying no,
they haven't.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
No, no. And of course the hinterland area has received
the most rain overnight. I think it was one hundred
and sixty five millimeters, so that's a lot of rain
that they have received and it's pretty disheartening. I think
we've got more thunderstorms and local wind gusts today, so

(05:27):
we just fingers crossed it. Everyone's stay safe. That's the
one huge benefit. We've had no reports of anyone needing
to be rescued, and everyone has been safe. I think
the nursing home I mentioned that had to be evacuated
at Nrang. I heard on the premier's conference call that

(05:48):
there were some minor injuries associated with that, but I
don't even have detail really of where that occurred or
what it involved.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Okay, well, we love crossing to you. Thank you so much,
good luck with the leak in the roof, and we'll
probably check back with you again sometime soon.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Thanks EJ, Thanks Gaming, Thanks Honor.
