Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, Donna, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm going okay, how are you are?

Speaker 1 (00:04):
You're going great?

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Are doing a lot of work, Donna. I tell you
I've never had days like the last two. They've gone
from like five point thirty in the morning till ten
o'clock at night. But anyway, I'm managing.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Yeah. So look, I have been getting asked this question,
where is Tom at the moment? And why are you
acting now?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Tom was on leave and the flight that he was
booked to come back on was canceled because of engine failure.
He's been trying to get back ever since that occurred,
and of course his flight keeps getting pushed back and
back and back, and I presume because of the weather.
So it's a waiting situation for him. But he is

(00:45):
up to date. He's as up to date as me.
I'm just a messenger at the moment.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Fair enough, Well, what is First of all, yesterday when
we spoke to you, we asked her just listen to questions.
One was are you going to secure everything on the
tram line? And then we had pictures coming through last
night of you know, the reely bins and the wheelbarrows
all strapped up to the Portaloos and things like that.

(01:10):
So you did bring it up in council and they
did act so well done on that.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It wasn't council, it was at the Premiers briefing, and
I have to say that the Minister, Brett Mickelberg, phoned
me offline and said what's the problem, and he got
right onto it. So I'd have to say the state
has been incredibly supportive of our city in particular, so
that's good news.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Well, the other thing was all of the blue flexibins,
and you got onto that as well for us.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Correct there were three hundred and fifty out, I can
tell you, and they were making every effort to get
as many as possible. Any that were left, they were
giving information to make sure that they were pulled inside
to the property boundary if at all possible.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Well, another question I've had for some listeners is this,
obviously pac Fers closed and they've closed the car parks.
There's a lot of people worried about their cars being inundated,
and someone suggested, could we have packed fair open for
people to park their cars in.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Well that's definitely above my pay grade, Emily.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Okay, Well, I just thought i'd bring it up being
the acting mayor. I thought maybe there is there a
solution for people's cars along the coastline.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
I really haven't got the answer. I mean, we have
been warning everyone of worst case scenarios. I mean, we've
been concerned about cars that might be in the basement
of car parks in high rise buildings, and I have
negotiated with the parking offices that we need to be
very flexible if they do need to bring their car

(02:41):
onto the street. As far as Pacific Fair is concerned,
I haven't even been advised to be honest about their clothes,
so that will be an individividual decision for business owners
what they do. What happened was we were giving worst
case scenarios and we did urge people to shelter in

(03:02):
place from six o'clock last night. Now the cyclone slowed.
There was no knowing that that would happen, and it
has delayed everything until later on Saturday. It would appear Friday, sorry,
later on Friday into Saturday. So that changes things and
we have to be ready to react and respond. I mean,
there's a possibility will reopen the Sandbag in today because

(03:26):
we closed that at twelve noon yesterday. In abundance of
course caution, you know, leading into what was looking like
really high winds and heavy rain last night, Well that
didn't happen. So we don't want people to think that
because it didn't happen, it's not going to happen. That's
it is going to cross the coast. You should proceed

(03:47):
with all of your preparation and just make sure you're
as safe as possible. And the message today is that
you don't need to shelter in place today. What you
need to do is monitor that can aditions and if
you're driving, drive according to those conditions.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
To be honest, it's a bit of a gift, Donna,
that you've got a little bit more time to prepare.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
It's a gift that we have a little more time
to prepare. And it's also a gift that it won't
coincide exactly with the highest tide, because that was a
major concern. But when a cyclone is moving more slowly,
I'm also led to believe that there may be heavier
rainfall because it absorbs a lot more of the moisture

(04:31):
as it travels over the land. So, you know, we
really don't know where we're being advised by the Bureau
of Meteorology and it's changed from four am Friday now
to later Friday, possibly as late as four pm Friday,
so I'll get more accurate information after the briefing at

(04:52):
eight point fifteen with the Premiers Branch and that's his
QDMG Queens Vandersaster Management Group briefing and the Bureau will
give us much more up to date information at that time.
So happy to talk to you anytime.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Thank you so much. Are you are the best acting
mayor this city could ever have, especially in a disaster
