Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hoy hoy.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Well, you guys are certainly very happy making the announcement
that the light rail is not going to continue, but
there's some sorts of questions. I guess it's nice that
you've listened to the people, but a little bit concerned
about what Burle is going to look like being a
bus depo.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Now. Oh look, I think that's just crazy talk. The
terms of reference for this whole review said we were
going to protect the Bowls Club, protect the Memorial Park.
To some nonsense being spouted by the opposition, those protections
have been locked in. And when you think about it,
light rail stage four, even if it did proceed for
about a decade, you're going to have buses connecting to it. Anyway.

(00:34):
The layover area for those buses is actually on West
Burley Road opposite Stockholand I don't think we've got anything
to worry about.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Okay, that's good to know. What else do we need
to know to put people's mind at ease? Are we
going to be getting a heavy rail because I think
we do need something to get us more effectively to
the airport.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yeah, and look, our enhanced bus service is going to
do just that. And that's why I'm particularly excited because
rather than waiting a decade, now we've got the ability
to deliver something that's really good much sooner. On the
issue of heavy rail, one of the good things for
the Gold Coast. And I don't think this has ever
been done before by state government. But you're going to
get a whole of city transport strategy now. Councils tried

(01:14):
to go it alone and do its plans, but its
plans have always touched on state roads and state infrastructure
that it's never controlled. We're not going to have a
whole city transport strategy. It's going to connect us all
together and that's the big win. And it's that plan
that we'll look at things like east west connections, spur lines,
heavy rail, all that.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
So we're looking at the electric buses and we're looking at,
as you say, going west to going towards the heavy rail.
So are you going to have points where you can
go straight off the tram at light rail, grab on
one of these electric buses and go straight to the
heavy rail.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
People have said to me Hermann, Look, we've got a
pretty good bus service, but we're having difficulty going east
west because if I want to visit the beach. I
can't really use light rail if I live out at Ravina.
If I live along the coast and I want to
get to a shopping center or a hospital, that's typically
an east west trip if you're in the south of
the city. So east west, in my view, is where

(02:08):
it's at, and that's something I'll be emphasizing in that
transport strategy.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Okay, Now, the other thing in the paper today they
announced that perhaps there's going to be a big development
happening at dream World, with a resort style facility being
built there. I feel like that means it's really important
to have a heavy rail to go from the airport
to our theme parks.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Oh, potentially, but I know that there are lots of
people that want heavy rail for reasons that have nothing
to do with the theme park. The important thing is
a transport strategy is an opportunity to now look at that.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Can the last stop be the Tower of Terrace so
you get to dream World and then you're discovered.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Back down again. Well, this whole debate has been an
emotional roller coaster.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
I can tell you that I guess the thing is
the idea of you know, people going from tram to
bus to train. It's a lot of effort for people
to have three different changes. Are the people making these
decisions the people that will actually use it, because I
feel like the people that are complaining the most of
the people that won't ever use it, they're still going

(03:07):
to drive their cars. They feel like it's not their problem.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Look, I think that's really the wrong way about looking
at it. You know, our question to the community is
what was the public What is the public transport system
that will best suit your lifestyle and desires and your
way of life. And we're delivering just that.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Hermit, Thank you, hermit, thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Mate. No no,
