Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right. Leo Lombard has been in the news probably
last couple of years on and off in the football
world as a young kid with the academy, the Son's Academy,
that was going to be drafted in the first round.
He was only sixteen and he played in a VFL
Premiership with the Son's reserves, so they're senior players and
(00:20):
he was only sixteen years old and they were expecting
it to be a first round selection and it was,
and he was a bit of a highlight on draft
night last week. And we're so lucky that because he's
obviously from the Gold Coast and he's in the academy
that we get to speak to family because we're one
hundred percent local, and we've got his mum Nikki on
(00:41):
the line.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Good morning, Nikki, good morning, how are you.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
We're great And look, I guess this shows how local
we are as a Gold Coast station that we were
talking about your son this morning and so you hit
us up on our socials thanking us for doing so.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Oh, it's just all quite surreal, really, it's all been
very exciting for both you know, Leo, we.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Were talking on air about his father being a wrestler.
But I know you guys are separated now, but tell
us a little bit about your and Leo's journey, because
he's very complimentary of you, and in my research he
says you are his inspiration.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I never wanted to get into footy
at all. I wasn't. Yeah, I went for the other code.
We started at Burly Bombers thanks to his little best
friend Adam, who was in prep, and we worked all
the way through that club until he was sixteen, and
then we went to another one, broad Beach Cats. But yeah,
(01:37):
the journey through the Bombers was just so good, just
a lot of friends and support, and now we've got
to this stage and it's just been quite an exciting journey.
I never thought we'd get this far, and to be
this far has been really good.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Well. Of course, he was an Academy player, which means
that the Sons always were able to bid on him
if if someone else bid on him to go into State.
So it must have felt great the fact that he
was always going to be able to stay at home.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
It's a relief, a relief, yeah, I mean, if he
was to go into State, I would have packed up
and gone with him. Yeah, but it's really he's got
his friends here, he's settled here and just to be
with a great club.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
It was very funny and he just did a little
slip up there being excited. He spoke very well, by
the way, with DICKO, we've got it for you here,
let's have another little listen.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Congratulations your son.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, so he gets that from his dad, right, Nikki
to swears are.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Not from you. Yeah, I'm clean mouthed, I'm good now.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
He played in the son's reserve side as a sixteen
year old and even then everyone was saying, look, he's
definitely going to be picked up in the sort of
top fifteen probably of the draft, and he's adding to
the players, including his friend Jake Rogers, who was able
to present him with the jumper down there.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yes, yes, those two are really good mates. They look
alike too, which is a bit weird, but yeah, they're
really good friends. And look or playing through the VFL
which led up to the Grand Final, I'll still play
that kick on every day just to give me that
good vibe.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Yeah. Well, he's an excitement machine and there's high expectations
for him. So he's already done one pre season with
the seniors last year. That's the advantage of being in
an academy. So it's going to be great to see
him run out there. And wouldn't it be great if
he got the nod in round one. It's very difficult,
I know, but you never know. He's pretty, he's pretty
hard at it and aggressive and his body's already ready
(03:50):
to go, so he won't lack the physicality.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
No. Well, he eats me out of house and home
and he'll only eat fresh stuff. So I've got to
cook everything from a square. But if that means the
healthy body and healthy lifestyle, I'll go with that.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Oh I love hearing that. That's a really good example
for all the young kids listening that he's really looked
after himself and treating himself.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Well, yeah, yeah, he's like you know, his conscious part
on the house. He sleeps and he's good. He's good.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Leo Lombard is a name that we're going to see
here on the Gold Coast and nationally representing the Suns.
Dimmer's the coach. They've got a great squad. So it's
onward and upwards for everyone concerned, and Nikki, you're just
going to enjoy the ride.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Good luck. Thank you so much, guys. I appreciate your
time and effort talking to me today. You don't.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yet You've got rid in me.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
What a delight, so cool. That was really cool. You know,
anytime we talk about something, if you've got a connection
to any of the stories, please hit us up. That's
what we're here for. Yeah, we love, and we love,
and we don't have to work so hard to hear
from you.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
All the players drafted, they all start their training today
with the full squads are all back. For some sides
that were in the finals, they might have a week
or two for some of the players to come back.
They're also a starting start, but all are draftees. Today's
their first day.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
It's very exciting. And on the weekend there was a
big footy camp at Runaway Bay and my one of
my friends kids is in the Little Titan. Just got accepted. Yeah,
it got accepted into the Titan's young side, and it
was a really great camp to see all of that
and how much talent is coming up in that side
as well. How he go, Oh, he's so great. They
actually filmed and sent it to all of us, him
(05:37):
reading the letter from the Titans squad, saying that he'd
been accepted and he's such a great kid. I'll get emotional.
And he's such a great kid, he really wants this,
and him just reading like you think boys and they're
all so rough and tough, and I imagine this would
be like watching the draft as well and just seeing
him get so overwhelmed going this could be the beginning,
you know, so important sport for our young.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
People, so they'll remember that one day. I hope so
show it on his hundredth games.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah, exactly, I hope you'll be before.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
We go, guys, Produce the monitor just handed me some
really important information. Was that good morning, Everyone shout out
that there is a mother duck and ducklings on the
M one trying to get a cross between the Rabina
exits heading south. Okay, thank you Josephine for that.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Oh my gosh. Like we said, contact doesn't tell us
the stuffy yet you got it in me.
