Speaker 1 (00:00):
So much as happened in the last four or five
days and a few more if you count the days
that we actually were preparing for Alfred. But to have
all the updates and get it across to everyone. We've
got the most important man in town on the line.
We've got the mayor, Tom Taits good morning, Tom morning.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hey, thanks for sending through those videos last night. You
jumped up in a chopper and you have a look
at all of our dams and water systems. Sent the
pictures through to us. It was pretty hectic up there.
Looked devastating it is.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
We started off with the beach. I how damaging the beaches,
including the scarping and the amount of the sad incredible. The
Mother Majors taking of our beach fifty kilometers long and
what in a week. It's incredible how they can do that.
(00:54):
Then from there I thought I'll check out Hinge Dam
because there's a lot of people's anxiety about Hinds Dam.
But it's working as designed. It's discharging you know, a
lot of water, but the main thing is that the
catchment area that we have designed down the bottom is
holding it. Also, it's orderly that the water flows down
(01:18):
the river, get out to the ocean, and the band
will just keep pouring it there.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
But what's the process of getting the sand back to
the beaches, Like, what is your process planning and then
and then action?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah? What what what we'll do today is that we
will secure the most unsafe areas of our beach. There
is the entry points, and you know, we've had some
I see some stairs is hanging in the air and
all that sort of stuff. So I want to make
sure that the excess area is secure so people you know,
(01:56):
some people even see a signage to go and to
go stay away, but they don't. So I want to
fix that since I can scarping. I've got equipment down
there now with the scarping area, especially our most popular
beaches as well. And then I've already ordered the dredging.
(02:16):
What that means is that we'll be dredging all the
sand that's been Mother and Mags taking it in just
off the ocean there and we so we'll be dredging
that I nicknamed it in twenty seventeen that we rainbow
the sand back onto the beach, and so that'll happen.
But it's coming up now, so I'll take about a
(02:37):
week to get here, and so we'll rainbow our beaches
back up. My key objective is to make sure that
the beach this time next week well have beaches open
for locals. Burly especially the southern beaches will be fine.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
What else do we need to know? I saw all
the garbage trucks getting out about today, and I know
that we missed a few areas. You guys are actually
supplying some skips if people are too full.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yes we have, we have, and really the skips are
designed for people who missed the collection last week that
we didn't go to. You know, people that is out
of power, so that have rotten food, nappies and all that.
So we want people to those people to use the skip.
Don't throw you it's not a curbside clean up, right,
(03:28):
Don't throw your furniture and things like that there that
will come later, but emergencies for cleanliness, especially with all
the rotten food. You go on to the counciled website,
the city dashboard, if you google that, over two million
people have and it will tell you the location of
(03:49):
these skips.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Okay, now, also you've got some recovery hubs happening as well,
where people can heat to and the libraries are open
as well, which would be a good place for people
to go to charge out.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
You're right, you're right. People can go there and really mingle,
gets yourself cup of coffee, a bit of biscuit there
as well. It's available. And recovery hub we've got at
Burly Waters Community Center and the Narranging Bisentenary Community Center
as well, and the other thing we have that's got
the full offering. The other thing we've got is chill
(04:22):
out Zone where we've got multi faith community groups using
their church and worship place that's open up. I think
we've got about eight of those pepper throughout the city. Again,
go to the council website and check that out. You
can go there. There will welcome you, you can recharge
(04:42):
your batteries. They might even have more food than our
recovery center.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Thank you so much for your time this morning, Tom,
and we'll get all that messaging out both on our
socials and websites, and of course go to the community dashboard.
If you've got power and you can do it.
