Megan Bennett (00:10):
Hello Leslie.
Lesley Meier (00:12):
How are you today?
Megan Bennett (00:14):
You have a very
deep voice.
Lesley Meier (00:15):
Darling.
Megan Bennett (00:16):
Is this because
you're getting over a cold?
Lesley Meier (00:19):
Sure, yeah, I just
think it sounds cool.
Yeah, I did have a cold.
We were gonna try to recordyour nose is a little stuffed up
, still a little drippy.
We were gonna try to recordlast Saturday.
I'm glad we didn't, and me too, cause I would have coughed and
coughed, and coughed, andcoughed and coughed.
You were doing something Kindof fun.
(00:42):
You were doing some politicalsomething, something, something.
Megan Bennett (00:45):
Yeah, we had a
local Democrat hootenanny thing
where we had to vote for who wasgoing to be in charge of the
local stuff Gotcha.
Lesley Meier (00:56):
So that was fun,
and then I got to go help my
mama out because she's been ill.
So yeah you know the thingsthat we are doing as gen x women
, the squish generation.
We are super squish.
Uh, happy international women'sday yay.
Megan Bennett (01:13):
Happy
international women's day to you
as well.
We should all have a cake allwomen all over the world.
Lesley Meier (01:21):
All women should
have cake.
All women should have cake orcreme brulee or whatever the
hell you want.
Whatever you want, yeah, it'syour day.
Megan Bennett (01:30):
It's your goddamn
day.
You can have a bath and eat abrownie in your bath if you wish
, if you would like, withcandles and champagne, sure, if
you wish.
Lesley Meier (01:43):
You can do
anything you want Mostly, sure,
if you wish.
You can do anything you wantMostly, mostly If you have
Robbing a bank is probablyfrowned upon, right, probably
frowned upon, and in placeswhere women don't have the right
to do whatever they want.
Megan Bennett (02:00):
That's true.
Lesley Meier (02:01):
We support you and
we send love and solidarity and
we will advocate for you.
Megan Bennett (02:06):
Yes, absolutely.
Lesley Meier (02:08):
Because that is
shit that we're sick of.
Megan Bennett (02:10):
We are sick of
that.
I'm sick of some other stufftoo.
Lesley Meier (02:13):
What else are you
sick of, Megan Girlfriend?
Tell me about it.
Megan Bennett (02:16):
I had to get up
early on a Saturday morning,
which right off sucks.
Why, why, pray tell, because Ineeded to go to the pharmacy to
get a fucking measles shot mygolly.
Lesley Meier (02:37):
why on earth in
2025?
Megan Bennett (02:38):
would you have to
go get a measles shot, megan?
Well, because you see, thereare people out there who, I
guess, don't remember thatmeasles killed a lot of people.
Lesley Meier (02:45):
Yeah.
Megan Bennett (02:45):
And blinded
people and made them very sick,
and so they've just chosen tonot have vaccinations.
And now we're seeing outbreaksof measles in different
communities and it's justspreading and it's freaking me
the fuck out.
I'm immune, compromised.
I have to to be smart, I haveto take care of stuff.
Lesley Meier (03:05):
I presume I'm
still protected from being a
kiddo at one time and beingvaccinated, but I don't know so,
and we are of a certain agewhere we don't necessarily know
which version of the vaccinethat we got right, and so you
may be eligible for a booster.
Megan Bennett (03:22):
You can also get
a test done, the tiddle tit tit,
tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit tit, tit
, tit tit tit, tit, tit tit tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit,
tit, tit, tit tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, tit,
tit, tit, tit, tit, tit, higherthan the cost of actually.
(03:45):
My insurance thankfully coveredthe cost of the shot anyway.
So it was like Amazing whywouldn't I just go do that?
Lesley Meier (03:52):
I also got a text
this morning reminding me to go
get my pneumococcal vaccine.
Megan Bennett (03:56):
I'm supposed to
do that too, but now I'll wait,
I'll wait.
Lesley Meier (03:59):
Let this Just a
little bit.
Megan Bennett (04:01):
I'm not a big fan
of getting multiple
vaccinations on a day, notbecause I'm afraid anything's
going to happen, because I'm not, but also my arms just get
really sore?
Lesley Meier (04:11):
Do they get sore?
And I just, I don't want to dotwo in a day.
I did my flu and my COVID onthe same day.
Megan Bennett (04:17):
That was a good
time.
Lesley Meier (04:19):
Yep, Both arms.
They're a little sore.
Megan Bennett (04:21):
You're like I
can't lift my arm, nope.
The one that hurts, though andI'm not you absolutely should
get it, everybody should get it,100% should get it when you hit
50 years old, or if you're atrisk earlier.
If you can do it is shingles.
That one hurts.
It is totally worth it, but myGod, my arm was throbbing.
(04:43):
Was it bad?
Yeah, that, but my god, my armwas throbbing.
Was it bad?
yeah, well, it's two, it's twodoses right, yeah, so you do it,
and then you wait like threemonths or something, and you do
it again and you get your secondone.
Lesley Meier (04:52):
I had no trouble
with it, oh good, so I will
advocate, I will say people, that is also possible it was
minimal, I think my second one Imight have felt like I had the
chills a little bit one night, but I was I was just tired good,
I was it.
Megan Bennett (05:09):
My arm was sore
and I was exhausted, like I was
like.
Ah, I think I'll go to bed alittle early and that's fine I
don't want the shingles.
Lesley Meier (05:16):
No, oh my my
grandmother had it same and she
got it in her like face and herback and everything.
Megan Bennett (05:23):
Yeah, my
grandmother had.
Lesley Meier (05:25):
it was like a band
kind of around her chest, oh
like where her bra would go kindof thing, yeah, so she was like
no brawls, she just wore tanktops and sweatshirts and it was
compared to what I've read, because I was not aware of the
severity of contracting shingles.
People have gone blind Becauseof the shingles People have gone
blind.
(05:45):
Yeah, because of the shingles, you can end up in the hospital.
It can continue for years.
Yeah, so she recovered,thankfully.
I think it was probably two orthree weeks, but fuck no.
Megan Bennett (05:57):
Yeah, I don't
need that.
Lesley Meier (05:59):
Really bad and I
had chicken pox twice back in
the days and I didn't even getsent to a chicken pox party.
I just I had like kind of twomildish cases or one rougher
case than a mild case.
Megan Bennett (06:13):
Yeah.
Lesley Meier (06:13):
So I don't want
that.
No, nor do I want the measles.
Megan Bennett (06:17):
No, and I have
read that there are parents who
are talking about measlesparties.
That's.
It's insane.
Lesley Meier (06:23):
Fucking insanity.
It's insane.
Megan Bennett (06:25):
It's insane.
Here are 14 kids at a party.
Statistically, one of them isgoing to die.
So great that sounds fabulous.
Lesley Meier (06:32):
Let's not do that.
We still die from the flu, folks, right.
Megan Bennett (06:35):
Like come on.
Anyway, I'm a little pissedabout that.
That's something I'm very sickof.
Lesley Meier (06:40):
Understandable,
yeah.
Speaking of women's health, yeah, tell me what.
You got something going on.
I had a little.
I have a recent health issue assomeone who has two and a half
years into post menopausal twoand a half years post menopausal
, you had your menopause day, day, single, day single day.
(07:01):
And then one event that youdon't even really know has
happened until Talk Single daySingle day.
And then one event that youdon't even really know has
happened until after the fact, talk about having a cake.
So you don't get a party untilafter the fact.
The other night I had somebleeding which was a little
unnerving.
Two and a half yearspostmenopausal, did I fuck
around?
Megan Bennett (07:19):
You did not fuck
around Did.
Lesley Meier (07:21):
I go on Reddit.
Megan Bennett (07:22):
Yes.
Lesley Meier (07:41):
Did I put a post
in a Facebook group?
No, I called my GD doctor%turns out to be something a
little bit more serious.
However, I'm not going to sitaround and wait to find out
later on.
So just an advocacy for likecall your doctor, call your GYN.
Megan Bennett (08:02):
If something
feels off, if something is weird
and different, then call yourdoctor.
Call your GYN If somethingfeels off, if something is weird
and different, then call yourdoctor.
That's what they're there for.
Lesley Meier (08:10):
Yep, and if you
are postmenopausal, bleeding is
not normal.
I've been on HRT for more thansix months.
Yep Not normal.
You need to go and take care ofyourself.
Megan Bennett (08:22):
And it doesn't.
And it's not something that youshould immediately go worst
case scenario in your head.
Absolutely not, Because itcould be other things.
Lesley Meier (08:29):
Absolutely.
Megan Bennett (08:29):
But also advocate
for yourself.
Do something good for yourself.
Yes, take yourself to thedoctor.
Don't talk yourself out of it,because if it is something
serious you want to jump on thatas quick as you can, sooner,
the better.
Lesley Meier (08:48):
So I will update
when we find out more and we'll
just go from there.
Yeah, please do.
Uh, this episode will air onthe 15th of march, you know what
that is.
That's a couple days before bigold holiday saint patty's day,
two days before st patty's dayand I will be working at a big
st patty's day party inindianapolis on the east.
(09:10):
That's very cool.
Megan Bennett (09:11):
I love st
patrick's day.
Lesley Meier (09:12):
It's so fun and,
and you know just not that, not
that bagpipes are irish in anyway, shape or form, but the
pipers are always out there areirish pipers there are, yeah,
but the you get, the bigscottish pipers that are out too
, because they're like yeah,we'll take this day too yeah, so
on the east side of indy thereare some.
There's the golden ace, whichis hosted.
Megan Bennett (09:34):
Oh my god, that
place longest saint patty's day
party and let me, just for forthose of you listening who have
absolutely no idea about thegolden ace, the golden ace is is
about the size of maybe avillage pantry.
It is a small like wee, yeahlittle gas station type size bar
.
Yep, it's old, it smellsmildewy and vaguely like old
(09:59):
cigarettes and booze.
Lesley Meier (10:01):
It's been there
for a long time.
Megan Bennett (10:02):
That place is the
most rockin' St Patrick's Day
party you could ever imagine.
There's tents and parking lotsand people parking and walking
from like blocks and blocks andblocks away you can't touch it
with a 10-foot pole.
It's amazing.
Lesley Meier (10:17):
So cool.
And now there is a second.
Now you've got your party placeSt Patty's Day party on the
east side of Indianapolis, atthe Snug of Irvington on South
Audubon, 210 South Audubon andwe will be hosting a big one-day
event on the 15th.
As you are listening to this,it's noon to 10.
Megan Bennett (10:36):
Live music all
day long.
If you're local, get your bootythere, go, that'd be fun.
Lesley Meier (10:40):
Do both Get an
Uber, Get a Lyft, have a sober
driver, enjoy yourself.
Come and hang out.
Megan Bennett (10:48):
Good Irish
whiskey Do you guys have?
Lesley Meier (10:51):
special drinks.
Are you doing special drinks?
Super simple, no, we'll haveall our Irish drafts.
I think we're doing likepicklebacks that day and green
tea shots.
So we're going to featureJameson and you know kind of the
basics, but combo Irish whiskeyand International women's day.
Yeah, I have two bottles heresitting next to me, uh, from
(11:13):
because you have.
Megan Bennett (11:15):
You've got a
person like a gen x woman.
Lesley Meier (11:17):
That yeah irish
louise mcguan of jj corey
whiskey.
She is the founder, she is thefirst uh ireland's first whiskey
bonder in 50 years, firstfemale irish whiskey and what
part of ireland she is in countyclaire oh, lovely um, and these
(11:38):
two bottles are women's dayreleases, so that was the first
women's day release.
The whiskey thief in 2020.
Can I smell it?
Uh, yeah, fuck, yeah, it'sreally good.
My good friend matt gave thatto me for my birthday this past
year.
Carmelie delish that smellsgood.
(11:59):
And then this was last year'srelease which we picked up when
we went over, uh, last march.
This was done with jennifernickerson, who is, um, the
founder of temporary distillery, and she and louise did this
release together.
Oh, that's cool.
Oh, it's very different.
(12:19):
Oh, yeah, it's a very differentwhiskey.
Oh, wow, very different than theother one too, like, like
wildly it's a little bit morelike there's some grapiness in
there, yeah, so yeah, it's got areally strong wine finish.
I think that's what.
That's very cool.
This is.
(12:39):
I actually don't know if I wassupposed to get this bottle.
It's not numbered Shh.
Don't tell, it's sample numberone.
Oh, we picked it up when wewent to visit JJ Corey last year
.
Well, I had ordered it.
No, no, no no no, I had orderedit and paid for it and they
couldn't ship it and we weregoing.
(13:00):
So, luckily enough, when wewent for our visit, we were able
to literally I just got it,louisa's sister handed it to me
in the little bag and I was soexcited.
Uh, this was finished in px.
Cap pedro jimenez casks.
I'm just reading like the littleokay we should have a little
(13:21):
toast so yeah, I just I mean, this is like you know, badass
women doing badass things, badass gen x women doing badass
things, being the first doingthings and just saying, you know
, fuck it, this is the thing Iwant to do yeah I've hit my you
know glass ceiling.
She had kind of hit her glassceiling in the alcohol industry
beverage alcohol industry andwent off on her own and has this
(13:46):
on her family farm and it'sbased in the history of jg cory
in the community who was awhiskey bomber that's amazing
you know, this is like a verycool person.
Megan Bennett (13:54):
This just we.
We often hear of women who arelooking for their second, their
second thing yeah, like, whatever it is like if you
worked in I don't know, likemedical transcribing for most of
your life right, there's louiseand you're done with that and
you want to go do something else.
Or maybe you're a federalemployee and you've been asked
to leave right like.
(14:14):
But what do you do with yoursecond half?
you know, and and for me, like,uh, I've been, I've been doing
my thing for a very, very longtime.
I'm at that point.
Lesley Meier (14:25):
Yeah.
Megan Bennett (14:26):
What do I want to
do?
For sure, and maybe it's likefor my mental health, like
literally it might be justworking in a jewelry store, like
I keep thinking about that.
I'm like there needs to besomething, yeah.
Lesley Meier (14:38):
And what would you
wake up feeling like good about
?
Megan Bennett (14:43):
doing every day,
right right, and I'll tell you
if I could make whiskey.
That might be a cool thing todo.
Fuck yes, I don't know shitabout it, but that'd be really
fun.
Lesley Meier (14:55):
Career for me, you
know, comes out of a love of
whiskey, sharing whiskey with myvery dear friend.
Jimim over dungeons and dragonsgames for many years and the
dream of the pub happening andthen us developing the whiskey
club and me doing education nowand coordinating events like I
(15:17):
would never have put educatorand irish whiskey on my list of
like and here you are jobs.
I also never would have puttherapist on my list of jobs.
As a young person, the onlything on my list of jobs was
theater degree.
Megan Bennett (15:35):
I'm going to be
an actor Cheers to that Same
Right.
Lesley Meier (15:42):
And then I got my
theology degree, because what's
more dramatic than theatertheology?
You just like things that startwith drama in the bible, if you
haven't noticed theater andtheology.
Megan Bennett (15:59):
Theology and
fifth key.
Fifth key.
Lesley Meier (16:01):
There we go.
It's not a part, but it's, youknow, and Fisky, meaningful is
the story because it's groundedin so much history, yeah, and
place and people, and that isimportant and it's not like a
(16:32):
thing that I sit at home bymyself and sip.
It is something that I share incommunity because we talk about
the experience of it.
Um, the smells, the memories, the taste.
That's what we do during ourwhiskey tastings here in
Indianapolis at the Snug and itcreates memories.
Megan Bennett (16:49):
And celebrating
the resurgence, right Absolutely
, of something that wasliterally wiped out.
Yes and the fact that we wereable to bring it back Yep, which
is incredible.
Lesley Meier (17:00):
And then we're
just so pleased to be able to
share it here in the UnitedStates and have some really
exclusive bottlings and get tomeet very cool people like
Louise and count her as a friend.
Megan Bennett (17:11):
I like the little
notch out of that bottle too.
It's interesting.
Lesley Meier (17:14):
Oh, it's here too.
I wonder what that's for.
I don't know.
I'm going to have to ask.
Oh, look at the bottom.
I have not.
Megan Bennett (17:20):
That's cool, is
that on the bottom of that one,
nothing.
Lesley Meier (17:23):
Not on this one.
Nice, there's the JJ Corey logoon the bottom.
I love it.
It's a good thing I put thatcork back on.
Oh hey it me.
Megan Bennett (17:31):
There's Louise.
There's pictures of.
We're looking at pictures ofLeslie and Louise at the Snug.
Yep we did a tasting for ourbottle release.
Lesley Meier (17:42):
You can.
Megan Bennett (17:42):
You can see the
picture of leslie is like she's,
she's, she's telling a story.
I am.
Lesley Meier (17:47):
There's lots of
hand movements yeah, you can
tell all my training.
There we go.
There's gems, all right.
Anywho, there we go.
So how do we transition fromthis?
Girl, I don't know shit thatwe're sick of.
Oh, we were going to talk aboutsad things too.
Yeah, who?
Megan Bennett (18:02):
died this week so
we we lost gene heckman really
fucking tragic in a yeah, in areally super sad, tragic way, um
, which speaks to lots of thingsit does.
I mean it just check yourelders, man.
Yeah, it's just I mean.
Lesley Meier (18:21):
I know he had.
Megan Bennett (18:22):
His wife was with
him.
Lesley Meier (18:23):
Much younger, much
younger.
Megan Bennett (18:25):
Taking care of
him?
Lesley Meier (18:26):
presumably yeah,
and she had a tragic, yeah,
tragically contracted a virus.
You know, it's the unexpectedthings, we don't count on that,
right, yeah, you don't plan forthe unexpected, and so just
really difficult.
And he had, I believezheimer'sor dementia.
(18:49):
So when you have cognitivedecline and you're isolated, you
know they were in a beautifulcommunity but and his caretaker?
Megan Bennett (18:55):
just you know his
caretaker and wife passed away
before him.
Lesley Meier (18:59):
I mean like that's
really sad sort of like worst
case scenario of things that canhappen to us as we age.
So it's, you know, reminder toput plans in place and take good
care of yourself and and maybeback up your plans because right
.
You know, even if you've got it.
Megan Bennett (19:17):
Even if you've
got it planned out, who knows Uh
favorite Gene Hackman movie.
Um favorite or a memorable genehackman film I well, we talked
when we were talking abouttalking about gene hackman.
Lesley Meier (19:31):
We talked about
birdcage, which yes, I mean
fantastic, not the thing that hewas most known for no right,
because nobody really like right, which we're remiss we must
mention.
Megan Bennett (19:40):
We have to
mention hoosiers, or we
literally lose our hoosier card.
I think sorry, but also aphenomenal fucking movie.
Yeah, really, really good, andhe was obviously we must mention
.
We have to mention Hoosiers, orwe literally lose our Hoosier
card, our Hoosier card.
Lesley Meier (19:45):
I think Sorry, but
Also a phenomenal fucking movie
.
Yeah, really really good, andhe was obviously like the sports
movies were a big thing forGene.
Megan Bennett (19:52):
Hackman Big time,
but this was like a nice
departure, absolutely.
Because, it was funny.
Lesley Meier (19:56):
Yes and it was you
know, it was just really cute
in terms of the community, likethe queer community, gay culture
, I mean it brought to bear, youknow, like homophobia,
transphobia, politics, like allof those things, and it was a
(20:21):
wonderful.
Megan Bennett (20:22):
Well, it
humanized people in a way that
like maybe we hadn't seen before.
Lesley Meier (20:27):
On the big screen
right.
Megan Bennett (20:29):
You just
brilliant when you see um.
You know, I don't know genehackman.
You see nathan lane.
Lesley Meier (20:35):
You see, you know
robin robin williams, it's like
I don't know, diane weist, she's, is she, she's the mom I think
yeah, she is.
Diane Wiest and that.
Megan Bennett (20:45):
Oh, my God.
Lesley Meier (20:47):
Was he in the
Poseidon Adventure?
Yeah, have you ever watchedthat?
Megan Bennett (20:50):
Oh yeah, years
ago though.
Lesley Meier (20:52):
I love that movie.
That one's great.
That is insane.
It is a ridiculous, ridiculousfilm.
He looks phenomenal in aturtleneck.
Megan Bennett (21:03):
Is that Leslie
Neal's?
Yes, it is.
Oh my God, that's so awesome.
Oh, of course, the French.
Lesley Meier (21:07):
Connection.
Yeah, amazing movie.
You watched that recently, didn't you, babe?
Megan Bennett (21:11):
That was so good
Academy Award winning movie.
Right, I think FrenchConnection was.
Probably I believe you, I meanthat's kind of a big deal.
Lesley Meier (21:18):
I watched that
vicariously.
Is he Lex Luthor there?
Oh yeah, and Superman of course.
Oh, that's right, that's right,so good.
Megan Bennett (21:28):
Yeah, very good,
let's see what else.
So many memories for me as achild oh of course.
Lesley Meier (21:33):
We quote Young
Frankenstein all the time along
with the Birdcage.
We quote that all the time.
Megan Bennett (21:44):
His list of films
is super long reds.
Yeah, I do remember that, wow, yeah so just you know there's no
way out, man mississippiburning.
Oh my gosh postcards from theedge for those of you who are
unforgiven.
Lesley Meier (22:01):
Postcards of the
Edge the Firm.
Oh yeah, there we go.
So many movies from the 80s and90s.
Wyatt Earp golly gee, we'rejust looking at the list this is
when he got into his westernphase he got Quick and the Dead
and Wyatt Earp and oh fun.
Megan Bennett (22:15):
Yeah, we're just
rolling through kind of some of
his movies listening audience.
Lesley Meier (22:19):
You don't get to
look along, but you can believe
us, we're here.
Royal tendon bombs also anamazing movie yeah, so he will
be missed.
He was um, obviously somebodythat we all grew up with.
Yes, I grew up watching.
Megan Bennett (22:32):
You know his, his
movies and um yeah, sad, super
sad to lose him.
Lesley Meier (22:38):
Extra sad in the
way that we lost him and a good
reminder just to take care ofyour people, take care of your
health, get your vaccines, go tothe doctor, damn it yes.
Megan Bennett (22:49):
Be good to
yourself and be good to others,
For God's sake.
Gen X Women Are Sick of this.

Lesley Meier (23:15):
It's a social club
.
It is a social club.
It's a membership-based club.
Memberships are $10 a month.
That does help support us ingrowing the platform.
We purchased a platform thatwould host a network of women so
that you could come togetherand meet each other in real time
(23:35):
.
Megan Bennett (23:35):
In a safer space
than a traditional social media

Lesley Meier (23:46):
We host movie
nights where we live stream some
of our favorites as they areavailable to us for group
watches of films from the 70s,80s and 90s.
We host a space for a monthlybook club.
We host trivia nights.
Once a month we have a livetext chat.
Megan Bennett (24:08):
Four prizes even.
Lesley Meier (24:10):
Four prizes.
That's true.
The space is able to host likeweekly text chats so that you
can kind of check in in realtime with people.
I would say the criticaldifference between kind of what
this space is and any othersocial media space that I've
experienced is that it is active.
(24:30):
You will have to engage in itor be engaged in it by other
people, so it's not like apassive consumption thing.
Megan Bennett (24:39):
It's like making
connections, Yep, and if that's
what you're looking for theopportunity to meet other people
, to find people who are maybein the same similar spaces as
you are Like-minded same time, phase of life, navigating all of
those transitions, then thismight be the right place for you
.
So check out Lylas.
You can learn more about it atgenxwomenpodcom.
Lesley Meier (25:05):
Okay.
So before we get started withthis segment oh, and we're back
I am going to pour you a littlebit.
We're going to do a sip of thisfounder's release for
International Women's Day.
Megan Bennett (25:21):
That was last
year's right Last year's with
Jennifer Nickerson.
Lesley Meier (25:25):
I don't think that
they gave it its own name.
It was just the Women's Dayrelease.
Megan Bennett (25:30):
That's a heavy
pour lady.
Lesley Meier (25:32):
Well, we'll sip.
Do you have other?
You know, you have a beverageof.
Megan Bennett (25:36):
I do, I got a
chaser, I got a chaser.
I I do, I got a chaser.
I got a chaser.
I got a chaser Diet beverage, that's not what you're supposed
to do with whiskey is have achaser.
That's not how you're supposedto do that.
Lesley Meier (25:49):
There we go, so we
get.
You know there's like a lightamber color in there.
You sort of turn it around.
It's not super oily, you don'tget a ton of legs on it.
It's not super oily, you don'tget a ton of legs on it, it's a
blend, yeah, like wine, you getthe legs right.
Megan Bennett (26:03):
You want the legs
.
Lesley Meier (26:04):
Well, if this was
a pot still, you get much more
viscousness in a pot.
Still I do see some dribblingthis is.
Megan Bennett (26:14):
I see some
dribbling which is not an actual
term.
Lesley Meier (26:17):
I'm going to guess
this is a single malt I don't
want to say dumb things Maturedin Rioja.
Oak casks from TipperaryBoutique Distillery's warehouse
oh, it's the oakiness in it, sothis will have a lot of that
stuff.
Oh, I like that Really strong, you get the oakiness on the nose
.
It's delicious.
Megan Bennett (26:38):
All right,
we're're gonna set this
seriously, this is why, like itworked in ireland because it
warms- your whole body, yeah, just warms you front to back.
Lesley Meier (26:55):
Oh, the oak is
really strong in that juicy.
It's delicious.
Okay, we're gonna stop talkingabout this.
Megan Bennett (27:03):
Oak is really
strong in that Juicy.
It's delicious Okay.
We're going to stop talkingabout this Is that what we think
of it.
Lesley Meier (27:06):
That means that's
tasty.
We're going to set this downhere.
We go Back to the microphone.
Megan Bennett (27:11):
All right, cheers
.
Happy International Women's Day.
Happy International Women's Day.
Lesley Meier (27:14):
Sláinte.
Okay, we're going to transitionto something slightly more
joyful yeah, celebrations, funthings celebrations places we
would go to celebrate shit yes, because our conversation began
with like birthdays and weirdbirthday parties and we were
(27:36):
like no, this is bigger thanthat.
It is bigger than that.
There, it is bigger than that.
There was something in the thatwas me Cheers, everybody,
cheers microphone.
There was something about Ithink it really started probably
(28:04):
in the 60s, but something aboutthe 70s and 80s, and themed
immersive restaurants, whichthis is a theme on the pod,
because we talk about disney.
Megan Bennett (28:07):
Yeah, we talk
about dungeons and dragons.
Lesley Meier (28:08):
Yeah, we talk
about fantasy movies.
Megan Bennett (28:09):
There's a clear
trend here oh yeah, we could
probably have an entire podcastabout escapism that's really
what this whole podcast is.
Lesley Meier (28:17):
It feels like that
it is escapism we're talking
about our past.
We're talking about our yeahyeah, we've decided, we have
something important enough tosay that we should get on here
and ramble along uh-huh and Ihope for the best, hope that it
brings joy to others or triggerssomething magical in your mind
(28:39):
where you're like, holy shit, Iforgot all about Hickory Farms.
Oh we did get a message fromour last pod.
Oh yeah, somebody sent a noteand said thank you so much for
mentioning Excalibur.
I had totally forgotten aboutit.
Megan Bennett (28:52):
Oh, that's such a
good movie.
Lesley Meier (28:53):
And I was like,
yes, yeah, that's such a good
movie, and when you watch it asan adult it's way kinkier than I
remember Well that's becauseyou were asked to leave the room
.
Megan Bennett (29:03):
Truth, but like,
I even watched it in college and
I didn't remember it being thatkind of hot and foxy.
Well, because in college.
Lesley Meier (29:10):
You were probably
like hey, well, true, I was
doing my own hot and foxy, anywho Back to immersive
restaurants of the 80s.
So we can transition yourExcalibur to a specific
restaurant that we both want togo to.
Megan Bennett (29:24):
We have not been
to yet my entire life, though, I
have wanted to go to one ofthese Medieval Times Hell yes,
and there is one in Chicago, sowe should do that.
In fact we could probably askfolks in Lylas if they're in the
Chicago area, if they want tomeet us there, and we'll have a
do a gen x?
Lesley Meier (29:42):
women are sick of
this shit.
Medieval times meet up a feast.
Let's put it out there.
Megan Bennett (29:47):
Watch some
jousting absolutely eat some
chicken with our hands tomedieval times.
Lesley Meier (29:53):
Are we gonna dress
up?
Are?
Megan Bennett (29:55):
we gonna like get
fits and cosplay.
Lesley Meier (29:58):
I think you have
to.
I think that would be amazing.
I would like to be.
Megan Bennett (30:05):
Uh, I'm princess
knight, I'm going to just go
full princess with a big oldcrown I want armor, oh okay, and
a big sword that's what shesaid.
Lesley Meier (30:18):
Oh boy, Thank God
for romantic novels.
Thank you, Sarah J Maas.
Megan Bennett (30:24):
Fabulous like
yeah.
Lesley Meier (30:26):
Yes.
Megan Bennett (30:26):
Full on.
Lesley Meier (30:28):
I hope we can do
some beheadings, Daggers and Ooh
beheadings.
They should have a menopausenight.
Megan Bennett (30:36):
Oh, there's a
royal falconer.
Lesley Meier (30:38):
Oh yeah, Like we
could have our own Ladyhawk
moments.
Do they do archery here?
I want to do.
Megan Bennett (30:45):
Yeah, I think
that would be cool If they do
like displays of you know skill?
Lesley Meier (30:50):
I wouldn't
necessarily give that to us, but
this is what we're talkingabout.
Megan Bennett (30:53):
Can I be a
princess with a crossbow?
Lesley Meier (30:56):
Fuck, yeah, that'd
be amazing.
You can be whatever you want.
Yeah, we're making it up.
So we start with a place thatwe've never been but we want to
go to.
But there were places but.
Megan Bennett (31:06):
I love that place
.
I mean you walk in right tothis place.
Lesley Meier (31:12):
They have jousting
Right, it's kind of like the
Roman Coliseum.
Megan Bennett (31:16):
Right, you watch
this spectacle, right?
Lesley Meier (31:20):
Yes, and Right,
you watch this spectacle, right,
and I think there's like a kingand a queen and you're supposed
to like toast to them and allthe shit.
Megan Bennett (31:29):
I don't know
You'll have mead wine ale.
I freaking love it.
Actually, what we saw on thewebsite is you could have a
medieval margarita too.
Lesley Meier (31:36):
Oh yeah, we were
laughing about that.
That's a little weird, butwhatever, maybe, whatever.
Look at that chicken on bones.
Megan Bennett (31:42):
Is that like
gumbo you get like medieval
gumbo.
Lesley Meier (31:45):
Sure.
Megan Bennett (31:46):
Beans and rice.
It's a big pot of stuff.
You can also get things thatare gluten-free.
Well, that's for your medievalceliacs.
True.
Lesley Meier (31:58):
Talk about a
contemporary creation because of
how we fucked with our foodsupply.
Megan Bennett (32:02):
I love that.
Lesley Meier (32:03):
Oh, you got a
medieval pina colada, uh-huh,
and your medieval hurricaneglass.
Those also happened in medievaltimes.
But we know it's camp, it'skitsch, it's souvenirs, it's all
the things.
It's a break from reality, andwe want to do that.
Megan Bennett (32:16):
And they've been
around forever.
Lesley Meier (32:17):
I know there's one
in Orlandolando too, because
I've driven past okay, you knowthis big giant building and it
says medieval times and you'relike, oh, and you feel when you
drive past these things it'slike exciting you're like oh,
this is a thing, yeah there'stacky shit happening in there
and I want to be a part of itbut this has its roots kind of
(32:38):
in memories from our childhood,Like we were talking about kind
of younger, immersiveexperiences and they sort of
begin with like Disney, butlocally showbiz pizza.
Megan Bennett (32:51):
Oh my gosh.
Yeah Well, and I think showbizwas national.
Lesley Meier (32:55):
They were Right,
they were national.
So you had, yeah, the audioanimatronic characters that were
okay, they were founded indecember 1979, so I was six
years old, I was eight, okay, and then they became national
and that's cool, it was so it'sfranchising right.
Megan Bennett (33:16):
Yes, they
franchise that, which that would
be a very expensive franchise,I would think.
Lesley Meier (33:21):
Right, Because you
would have animatronics and
everything too.
Megan Bennett (33:24):
Oh God, that
fucking bear.
Lesley Meier (33:26):
Yeah, that's
terrible, but it was like
Absolutely terrifying, awesome.
I mean, as a kid, mitzi was thelike Mouse Duck, mouse, duck
mouse.
Megan Bennett (33:36):
Duck mouse I
remember her.
What was the bear's name?
Duck Mouse I remember her.
Lesley Meier (33:42):
What was the
bear's name, billy Bob.
Yeah, there you go, billy Bob,and they were kind of like a jug
band, yeah okay yeah, and therewas a when you went for a
birthday party you would getlike a little 45 record of them
singing happy birthday.
I remember that, wow that'scool.
I don't remember, but evenbefore that here in indianapolis
(34:02):
like middle school.
Oh yeah, oh, it was a mousewith long hair.
Megan Bennett (34:07):
Scary isn't she?
But I thought I do remember theape.
Lesley Meier (34:11):
Oh, the gorilla.
Megan Bennett (34:12):
Or the gorilla,
yeah.
Lesley Meier (34:13):
Yeah, ape gorilla.
I don't think he's theRock-A-Fire Explosion.
Megan Bennett (34:17):
Oh my God, you
can almost hear it, can't you in
your head?
Lesley Meier (34:20):
Did evolve over
time too, but before that, in
the probably early 80s, late 70s, was farrell's ice cream parlor
which we've talked about before.
Megan Bennett (34:35):
Yes, was like an
immersive restaurant experience
giant, giant ice cream sundaesthat you could eat with like 10
of your favorite friends yes, lots of mirrors.
It was like the old sodafountains red and white and yep
and somebody playing cymbals anddrums and stuff like that for
your birthday.
Lesley Meier (34:52):
Yeah, like
traumatically loud Sensory
overload.
Megan Bennett (34:55):
I hated that part
of it, but these immersive
places, and on the east sidethere was one that you would go
to- yeah, so we had this ishyperlocal, but we had Paramount
Music Palace, which was pizzaand, as I recall, very, very
good pizza buffet type of thing.
But the big part was you'd walkinto this giant kind of A-frame
(35:20):
room and at the front of theroom was this huge organ like a
church organ, but on steroids,right.
So the organ sat in the middleof the room and then there were
cases around the room of thepipes themselves, so there was
always somebody up there andthey were playing the organ.
Now, do I think that that'ssomething that would work today,
(35:43):
like people just sitting aroundeating pizza and listening?
Lesley Meier (35:46):
to organs.
Are those drums up there Likedid it play automatically?
Megan Bennett (35:51):
Yep, like well,
it was all pedal work, right,
right.
So they'd hit a pedal and thedrums would go and it was super
cool, yeah it was really wild,um, but that was.
That was a pretty cool place.
That was where you would go andhave big birthday parties,
because you would get an entire.
The tables were really long, um, and so you could have a whole
table for your family and yourfriends and do a that's amazing.
Lesley Meier (36:14):
That way we never,
or birthday party.
I don't remember going to that.
That doesn't mean that wedidn't do it, um, but I don't
remember going.
The sign was iconic like thesign shape.
Yeah it later.
I don't know what it was it is,it became.
Pablo's, but Don Pablo's madetheir sign to that sign shape.
And then that sign fell at somepoint.
(36:38):
As one does when you're like 50years old Right, and then I
think it's like Indie DiveSupply or something like that oh
Lord.
I wouldn't be surprised GreatScuba.
Megan Bennett (36:49):
I'm down.
It did have a giant waterfountain.
Lesley Meier (36:52):
Did it always have
a fountain?
Megan Bennett (36:52):
in it.
Uh, that's interesting.
I don't remember a fact.
Lesley Meier (36:56):
There might have
been one in the lobby because it
had, when it was don pablo's,it had like a two-story yeah, I
don't think so.
Megan Bennett (37:04):
I think that was
a don pablo thing, that edition.
But I could.
I could be wrong.
Lesley Meier (37:07):
I could be totally
wrong.
It was great.
I loved going there.
It was unpolished, notimmersive, but other kind of
experiential things from ourchildhood we talked about
Chi-Chi's.
Oh my God, yes.
Megan Bennett (37:21):
So Chi-Chi's is
coming back as being our
experience of.
Lesley Meier (37:23):
Mexican Chi-Chi's
is coming back.
Megan Bennett (37:24):
Is it really, and
I'm so excited, are they going
to do the birthday party?
I don't care, I hope so, I hope.
All I want is that chickenchimichanga with, like that
green verde sauce that goes ontop.
Oh God.
Lesley Meier (37:35):
I want that so bad
.
It's been so many years sinceI've been to a Chi-Chi's.
I still.
Megan Bennett (37:39):
I crave that
still to this day.
Lesley Meier (37:41):
Yeah, so that was
a Midwest first experience with
Mexican in the 80s Uh-huh.
Megan Bennett (37:46):
Sorry, it was
loud AF.
Lesley Meier (37:49):
Yeah.
Megan Bennett (37:49):
And you would go
in for your birthday and they
would come around.
This was like the beginning ofmy hatred of going to places
where they sing birthday songs.
But you would say, oh yeah, andyou used to be able to be like,
oh no, it's her birthday.
And even though it wasn't herbirthday, you know, and like
just fuck with people, super fun.
And then all the staff wouldcome over and be like happy,
(38:12):
happy, happy birthday.
Lesley Meier (38:14):
Happy, happy,
happy birthday.
Megan Bennett (38:16):
Happy, happy,
happy birthday to you, to you,
to you, olé.
Lesley Meier (38:20):
Yeah, we're sorry.
Megan Bennett (38:22):
I'm not really
that sorry, but look at the
fountain.
Yeah, oh yeah, a big fountainin there they had amazing.
I think I was too young whenthey finally closed to ever have
a margarita, but I remember mymom talking about the margaritas
being good.
Lesley Meier (38:44):
Good to know.
Megan Bennett (38:45):
So if they come
back, we'll keep an eye out.
Oh my gosh, I was like what arewe talking about next?
I have, excuse my burp a wholelist about these immersive
experiences, too, are.
I know there's tons thateverybody, everybody in every
town, had something weird andunique a restaurant or something
that was like their experience.
So I will touch on a few ofthem as we talk today.
But if you had one and you wantyou know to share it with us.
Lesley Meier (39:07):
We would love to
know because, please send your
stories, we will read them onthe air.
If you send them locally too,we should mention, like the ls
airs tea room that was downtown.
Yeah, for so many years awesometotally, but those very
immersive places that you wouldgo on purpose to have an
(39:29):
experience.
Megan Bennett (39:30):
Yes, the ls airs
tea Room was big for my mom.
As a little kid she told mestories and then I would go with
her and my grandmother andthere was always a toy chest at
the end.
Did you ever go?
Lesley Meier (39:46):
I did not.
Megan Bennett (39:47):
So there was a
toy chest and after, first of
all, you'd have to get dressedup.
Because it was a tea room, andso you get all dressed up and
you go and they would have, uh,the most amazing chicken velvet
soup, yes, ever absolutelydelicious on the internet.
Yes, do it make it totallyworth it.
Ls airs chicken velvet soupcannot, cannot recommend it
(40:07):
strongly enough.
And then they would have theice princess.
Um uh, ice cream cone oh, so itwas like a goodness domed kind
of ball of ice cream withmeringue around the top, oh and
like, almost like a baked alaskakind of thing with a little
doll body.
It was a ceramic doll body, ohyeah so the the meringue and the
(40:29):
ice cream, or the skirt, whichis really got you and then, when
you were done, oh, look at yourtea.
Though the tea service you havelike a real tinker sandwiches
and petty fours and yeah oh, andthen when you were done, you
would leave and there was a bigtreasure chest and they had um
little prizes, some of them allwrapped in tissue paper with
(40:50):
either a blue or a pink ribbon, and you could pick whichever one
you wanted and have like somesort of little prize that those
memorable, like very intentionalexperiences, so fun.
Lesley Meier (41:02):
We and we still
look for that today.
I mean, which is kind of how wegot here.
We were talking about a coupleplaces locally.
We're talking about tiki, ohtiki restaurants and tiki places
, tiki bars because thatcertainly goes into disney and
some of the other places that wewere talking about and that
tiki experience like there's awhole tiki subculture, people
(41:24):
who just travel around and go toall those tiki bars and collect
the mugs and and then they'lltake um.
Megan Bennett (41:31):
I went to false
idol in san diego which is
amazing so cool and everybodybrings.
I don't know I was there on awednesday or something and
everybody brought back, liketheir favorite tiki mug, okay,
and they would have, like thebartender, make the make their
drink in their favorite mug.
Oh yeah, that's awesome so cooland some of them are elaborate
(41:51):
and fabulous.
Look at that's gorgeous, sobeautiful.
Lesley Meier (41:55):
Locally we have
strange bird and we have strange
bird is in irvington on theeast side and then in fountain
square.
We have it just went out of mybrain.
Megan Bennett (42:05):
We've said it
like 10 times we're cool, this
can all be edited.
Lesley Meier (42:12):
The Inferno Room.
Thank you, Jesus.
Megan Bennett (42:14):
Yeah, so then on
yeah.
Lesley Meier (42:16):
So we've got here,
we go Strange Bird locally on
the east side in Irvington, which is a tiki themed
restaurant.
They have an incrediblecocktail menu.
It's very immersive, it's got agreat vibe.
And then they have the show youshop, which is ramen, and then
they have the Shoyu Shop, whichis ramen, and then we have in
Fountain Square, yeah, the.
Megan Bennett (42:32):
Inferno Room,
which is really cool.
It's like multiple levels.
The people who own it went andbasically curated all the things
that are hanging on the walls.
So the masks and the you knowthe big bamboo things and all
the stuff.
Lesley Meier (42:48):
There's also a
little one that's on the back
end of um, a taco shop infountain square too oh, yeah,
that um so you know, thoselittle tiki places are so fun
and there's my used to be diningroom, which was now a tiki room
oh, my your dining room whiskeycabinet is in it.
Megan Bennett (43:06):
It's a, it's a
tiki cabinet, it's amazing.
Lesley Meier (43:08):
so and we have
this little place in Brown
County that we go, who importstons of stuff and we collect
tiki items from them to decorateour room.
Megan Bennett (43:17):
I love that
Because we were like.
Lesley Meier (43:18):
this room becomes
a laundry dump.
Why am I having a table in here?
It's still a laundry dump, butnow it's a lounge.
Megan Bennett (43:23):
Well, the end-all
be-all of the tiki rooms, I
think maybe not the end.
All be all but one of the best.
Iconic is Trader Sam's atPolynesian and Disney.
Yes, absolutely.
I mean when the walls starttalking to you and the you know
and giving you shit, that'spretty cool.
Lesley Meier (43:40):
And when you get
yelled at for ordering certain
drinks.
It's a wonderful, immersiveexperience.
Megan Bennett (43:46):
Agreed.
Lesley Meier (43:46):
So what do you
think it is about these
immersive experiences that weseek out?
Megan Bennett (43:52):
Oh, I don't know.
I mean, it's just a nice way ofescapism, right, we talked
about that.
It's just something unique andit's an adventure in itself.
But then, like you, just get totry something new and just you
know, be separate from yourregular Wednesday night dinner
(44:14):
of fish sticks and mac andcheese.
Right, you get to go dosomething completely different.
That's pretty close to true.
Lesley Meier (44:21):
I see their tuna
salad.
Yeah, see Fish sticks and mac.
Fish sticks and mac.
Megan Bennett (44:26):
We'll see how it
goes Little Stouffer's something
or other that you just shove inthe oven.
Lesley Meier (44:31):
Frozen dinners.
Totino's party pizzas there waslocally.
Well, we were kind of diggingback in the 80s.
There was this like rash ofkind of big burger places.
There was like Fuddruckers.
Somebody mentioned the GroundRound.
Megan Bennett (44:47):
Oh yeah, it was a
local kind of immersive
experience.
Johnny Rockets, johnny.
Lesley Meier (44:50):
Rockets, johnny
Rockets, johnny Rockets was like
in the 90s.
Some of these aren't asdramatic as others in terms of
like immersiveness.
Oh, for a while in Chicago, particularly when I was in high
school, it was a thing to go toEd DeBevics.
Ed DeBevics was so fun I thinkit's still they moved, they
moved.
Megan Bennett (45:13):
Okay, so fun.
I think it's still they moved,but I think they're still around
.
Lesley Meier (45:14):
But yeah, they
would just insult you.
Yeah, you'd pay to be insulted.
It was magnificent.
But, it was totally worth itbecause the food was really good
.
And we talked about, oh yeah, the pictures from Ed DeBevix.
We also talked aboutcontemporarily like Rainforest
Cafe, which was came out in the90s.
Megan Bennett (45:31):
Yeah, Rainforest.
Cafe, and then there's adinosaur one also, that's at
Disney T-Rex Cafe.
T-rex Cafe, you talked aboutthat.
Lesley Meier (45:38):
We were loving
that.
Do you have memories?
Were there places that youvisited either when you were
traveling as a kid, like forvacation, that were sort of
immersive, memorable restaurants?
Megan Bennett (45:50):
So I went to the
original Hard Rock Cafe in
London.
Lesley Meier (45:54):
Amazing which was
really really cool.
Megan Bennett (45:58):
Yeah, like.
So that one was and I know Ibought something when I was
there and I can't remember whatthe hell it was?
Lesley Meier (46:05):
Did you just get
the standard iconic t-shirt?
Megan Bennett (46:06):
Maybe I got a
t-shirt.
Lesley Meier (46:07):
I don't know, I
don't, I don't know it was
incredibly cool.
Megan Bennett (46:11):
Maybe I got a
t-shirt, I don't know, I don't,
I don't know.
It was incredibly cool to have.
Maybe I got a pin for my denimjacket or whatever.
But yeah, so that was a very, very cool place and we in
Indianapolis had our own HardRock for a long time and we
don't have it any longer.
Lesley Meier (46:23):
No, it's gone.
Megan Bennett (46:24):
But along with
the Hard Rock, you had the
Hollywood one right, the.
Why can't?
I think of the name?
Lesley Meier (46:33):
I don't know.
I even have it written down, but I don't see it.
Planet Hollywood.
Megan Bennett (46:38):
Thank you.
Lesley Meier (46:40):
Sometimes we just
need Tim to jog our brain a
little bit, pick up the wordsthat we promised Planet
Hollywood.
Megan Bennett (46:47):
Which I think a
bunch of different stars own
pieces of.
I know Arnold Schwarzeneggerhad a a share of planet
hollywood.
Lesley Meier (46:54):
So that's amazing,
that's dumb knowledge and we
talked about, like in the 90s,2000s, like dick clark's
american bandstand restaurant ohyeah, margaritaville,
margaritaville.
Megan Bennett (47:06):
I have been to
the original of that one as well
, did you?
Yeah, lovely Key West.
Lesley Meier (47:12):
Oh yeah, it's
fabulous.
I think Key West is its ownimmersive experience.
It really is.
I agree that is magnificent.
When I was a kid and I thinkthis probably started my love of
like what I imagined Tiki waswe used to vacation prior to my
mom's death.
(47:32):
We would vacation in Floridalike in.
Madera Beach and in Clearwaterwas this wild restaurant called
the Kapok Tree Inn and you wouldwalk up and like when you were
waiting to go in they had thesetwo giant kind of like Easterter
island um like big statues okayout front.
(47:53):
So it was a real, like florida, white person's mishmash of
cultural appropriation as wellas uh, some as a dose of
colonialism thrown in there andalso it kind of had this like
nature preserve-y vibe there wasa giant fucking kapok tree in
(48:15):
the front of the restaurant thatevidently had been there since
like 1880.
Megan Bennett (48:21):
Wow, check that
out.
That's an old postcard from it.
That's wild.
Lesley Meier (48:24):
So it was that
much of an experience, like we
would dress up, you would wanderthrough.
I think there were like 20-some, 20, some odd rooms in this
sprawling complex.
There were fountains, it wasopen and airy and light.
There were gardens.
I like going to Disney.
(48:50):
It was an insane restaurant butit was known randomly for its
fried biscuits with apple butterVery Midwest.
Yeah, it seems like they're also, I guess, ultimately Southern,
but like, look, you can see likethe glass, kind of nautical,
like the lights up there.
So to me like there wassomething about sitting and
(49:11):
dining in this, like fullyimmersive experience super
magical that got planted in mysoul.
But I we probably started goingthere when I was like a toddler
yeah so and it was reallyspecial to get to go and
something about that attached to, like the magic of disney, and
then just my giant imaginationand reading fantasy books all
the time, like this is what lifeis I'm gonna have to ask my mom
(49:34):
if this is something we everwent to, because we we traveled
to florida all the time okay, when I was a kid, my grandma, my
grandma, my dad's side, grandmaand grandpa, my dad's side,
lived down there, so I feel likethis is something that we would
have done, so you can likegoogle this.
There are whole like archivepages about this place with like
the postcards and stuff thatwere in it.
(49:54):
It was just that's cool.
It was really cool.
I can't imagine how expensiveit is to maintain places like
this, which is probably why itultimately closed well, and it
doesn't surprise me, I guessthat this is in florida, because
it seems like yeah disney wouldhave just spawned absolutely
more and more things like this.
Right, yeah, good thought sureI'll buy that.
(50:15):
I mean, that's, that is ourlike, that's my bullshit.
Megan Bennett (50:18):
An expert not an
expert bullshit in there yeah,
that's don't even know.
Lesley Meier (50:23):
But that's my
guess.
I think you're totally right.
Megan Bennett (50:26):
Let's take that
my favorite immersive experience
of all time.
Oh, yes, tell me of all time itis.
Also, it's a disney thing, okay, um so uh, pleasure island,
which is now been replaced by umdisney springs, so it was a
whole complex, okay, that had umbars and restaurants and
(50:47):
nightclubs and all the things.
So, basically, you could pay togo to this particular island,
okay, and then pop around allthese different bars.
The best one was a place calledthe adventurers club.
Amazing, conga loosh.
For those of you who know whatI'm talking about conga loosh,
conga loosh.
Okay it is.
(51:08):
It was three stories you'dyou'd start at the top and work
your way down and yes, you didit was.
Is that zeus?
Uh, yeah, I think so.
Um, he naked.
You'd walk all the way aroundand and down this ramp,
basically into the bottom, andthere were multiple little rooms
.
But it was set up to be a 1930sstyle adventures club where
(51:32):
okay, you're where the hunterswould show up oh sure, and like,
complete with like colonialism, but sure, we don't emphasize
that right and there were animalheads all over the walls and
some of them talked and some ofthem didn't okay and there was a
room of masks.
Lesley Meier (51:48):
The mask room was
amazing and the masks would
argue with each other, so likeyou'd sit in there and they
would have arguments classic andyou'd sit there and have drinks
and they would argue you know, with each other.
Megan Bennett (51:59):
And then, um,
there were actors and actresses
that were there and they wouldtake on these different roles.
So you would have, like thehead of the adventurers club,
colonel, something, something orother, and then you would have
maids and you would have, uh,like the colonel's wife, and
then you would have, um, likeyou know, the, the sexy, um, I
(52:22):
don't know, like strumpet typecharacter, I don't know, sure,
but they would vivacious vixen, but they would interact with
each other and in the mostperfect, just avant-garde
guerrilla theater kind of way.
Lesley Meier (52:39):
Oh, wow, so it
wasn't so much scripted, not
scripted, they would just havestories over the course of an
evening.
Okay.
Megan Bennett (52:47):
And they would,
you know, interact with the
people who were there justhaving a drink, and then at some
point, I think a couple times anight, they would invite
everybody who was there intothis big room and they would
basically bring you in as amember of the Adventurers Club
and so you would take the oathand you would get a little pin
(53:10):
and you would learn Congaloosh, which is the you know your
cheers, it's your cheers, yeah.
Lesley Meier (53:19):
So there were
t-shirts.
Megan Bennett (53:22):
Yeah, it was
amazing and I'm so sad that it's
gone.
But I would love to see aresurgence of that particular
thing somewhere, yeah, yes.
I mean, I guess like thingslike these.
Lesley Meier (53:34):
Like this is fully
improvisational, which seems
really cool.
They just have like themedcharacters and then a basic
storyline and then they continuein the environment, playing off
of exactly the audience,exactly.
So this is sort of likepre-dinner theater, like murder
mystery dinner theater kind ofimmersive.
Megan Bennett (53:53):
It's pre-exit
room, pre, yeah, mystery things,
absolutely.
Lesley Meier (53:58):
But there's
something about creating these
environments that are such animportant part of this that
walking into magic, yeah that wehave lost in some of
contemporary, many mostcontemporary, dining experiences
.
Megan Bennett (54:17):
Yeah, for sure I
hope kind of re-emerges in ways.
All right, leslie you have totell us.
Lesley Meier (54:23):
So we started this
, so before we came on today,
before we started recording, Idon't even know how we got on
the topic.
Megan Bennett (54:34):
Well, you're
planning a trip.
Lesley Meier (54:36):
Daylight savings
time is what brought this up.
Here you go.
I don't even know how thishappens.
This is the genius of an ADHDbrain, because I looked on
Instagram and I said damn it,tomorrow is daylight savings
time and I was grumpy about thetime change, even though I love
longer days, and I said thankyou, casa Bonita, for telling me
(54:58):
that.
And then Megan said what thehell is Casa Bonita?
And I said oh, my God, youdon't know about Casa Bonita.
Megan Bennett (55:05):
And this is how
this whole conversation got
started.
Lesley Meier (55:08):
We're reenacting.
Megan Bennett (55:10):
No, I don't know
about Casa Bonita.
Lesley Meier (55:12):
Please tell me
more Let me tell you about Casa
Bonita.
Casa Bonita is in Colorado, itis in.
Is it in Denverver?
No, no, clear, clear it is indenver, no, it's in like a
smaller area.
Okay, you are zero for three, right no, no, no, no, I looked,
(55:32):
I know you look it is.
Megan Bennett (55:34):
It is in a
colorado, denver colorado suburb
I'll wait it is.
Lesley Meier (55:40):
It is where it is
in lakewood, colorado both wrong
lakewood.
It's a suburb and the reasonthat we were talking about casa
bonita is because of fuckingsouth park and the creators of
(56:02):
south park.
Casa bonita started in the 50s.
It looked pull up the historyvery 50s it was originally was
it opened in the 70s it was inthe 70s, so it is of this era
and the creators of South Parkare Gen X men and it was of this
era of immersive restaurants.
(56:24):
It was sprawling, it was pink,it was filled with magic.
There were like caves andpirates and divers that would
dive into a pool inside of therestaurant.
Megan Bennett (56:39):
Lakewood.
Lesley Meier (56:39):
Colorado Opened in
1974.
Megan Bennett (56:42):
And it was part
of a Mexican entertainment
restaurant chain that started inOklahoma, oklahoma City.
So I suspect, like other peopleknow, about Casa Bonitas.
Lesley Meier (56:52):
So this is the
only.
Megan Bennett (56:54):
Can we read the
last sentence for me right?
Lesley Meier (56:56):
here when.
Megan Bennett (56:57):
On the first
paragraph, that last sentence,
the restaurant oh Lord.
Lesley Meier (57:06):
Colorado since
opening Mommy mommy and daddy
fighting again and the greaterdenver metropolitan area.
Thank you very much, but I knewit was.
Oh boy, white man.
Anyway, casa bonito was a oneand only in terms of its
location.
It was sprawling.
Show me photos now.
Megan Bennett (57:27):
So we can, so it
temporarily closed March 2020.
Yes, because of all, becauseeverything closed Right.
Lesley Meier (57:35):
But it had.
So there is a documentary thatyou don't have to believe any of
the bullshit I'm spewing at you.
There is a documentary about itbecause the creators of South
Park purchased the building.
They wanted to renovate itbecause one of them had grown up
going there.
Yeah, look at this thing.
Megan Bennett (57:52):
Which one was it?
That is wild.
Lesley Meier (57:55):
Matt.
Was it Matt?
We watched this documentary.
This is how they both did, because they're both, they're
both they're both from colorado, they both went here but uh,
that's how civvy my brain is.
So it is.
I mean, look, it's totallyimmersive, it's tropical, it's
beautiful.
There are cliff divers, thereare cliff divers.
This is a whole show.
(58:16):
There are performances, there'sa puppet show.
It is like four kids.
It is magnificent.
So the documentary isfascinating.
Megan Bennett (58:27):
They went through
hell and high water to open
this thing.
Lesley Meier (58:30):
It ended up
costing them $40 million to
complete the renovation of thesemagical, immersive, escapist
experiences where, frombeginning to end, you are
transported somewhere, you areattended to, like you are the
focus of the experience, and Imean it's just, it's tropical
(58:52):
and fabulous saved this thingbecause it was that important.
Megan Bennett (58:56):
Yes, but how's?
Lesley Meier (58:57):
the food uh now
phenomenal okay, all right used
to be shit, but now but they'vemade like yeah, they hired this
amazing chef.
She recreated many of thedishes and like elevated them.
She was, like, super well knownin the area.
Don't trust me for all thedetails, but this is true.
(59:17):
I'm not going to say namesbecause they all escape me.
Megan Bennett (59:20):
I want to go to
there.
Lesley Meier (59:22):
I know so
reservations for May opened up
March 1st, so you have to makereservations a couple months in
advance and go.
Megan Bennett (59:29):
That's fantastic.
Lesley Meier (59:30):
And it reopened in
2023.
And I think it was like a yearbefore anybody could get a
reservation, which, I believejust means the pretty house.
Megan Bennett (59:38):
Yeah, true House
beautiful House.
Lesley Meier (59:41):
Pretty, I love it,
pretty house.
So there you go.
I think that's kind of like theheight of restoring and
bringing back one of these fullyimmersive experiences.
Megan Bennett (59:52):
This means that
there's hope for me in a future
adventures club, right, hellyeah, so I just need $40 million
$40 million dollars.
Lesley Meier (01:00:00):
It was only
supposed to be six and a half.
When you watch the documentary, your heart just sinks with them
, and when you see the inside ofit, like the lack of um upkeep
over the decades, I mean so it'slike for those of us who really
love those bad shows aboutfixer uppers and stuff like that
.
It's like the ultimate.
It'll totally scratch your itchand just the fact that they
(01:00:22):
were able to follow through withit is pretty magnificent fixer
upper but I would even to likekind of circle back back, like
earlier.
We were talking about, you know, saint patty's day and indie and
immersive experiences, and Ithink that, like the snog was
designed with intentionality tolike feel very immersive.
Megan Bennett (01:00:41):
It feels like you
are in an Irish pub and
experiential Absolutely.
Lesley Meier (01:00:43):
You know you want
to be someplace for a little
while Right, when you canexperience like a break
community.
Be in places that areintentional, that are lovely to
look at, with reallywell-crafted food or drink.
I love it and enjoy yourself.
We need moments of joy.
Megan Bennett (01:01:04):
Absolutely, and
I'm glad that there are still a
lot of places out in the worldthat are creative and fun.
Yes, because you mentioned whenwe were talking about this,
there's a bar in um, new orleansyes, for like the vampire bar
cafe, that's awesome um, there's.
There's a place in manhattanthat I just learned about called
(01:01:28):
the jekyll and hyde club.
It's a restaurant and bar um,which looks incredibly creepy
and fabulous.
Yeah, so the next time I govisit my daughter, I'm gonna
have to check out the jekyll andhyde club yeah, vampire cafe in
new orleans, oh.
Lesley Meier (01:01:42):
And we also got
reminded of like the resurgence
of speakeasies, oh yeah, andjust like kind of secret little
nook places that you can go toescape.
Megan Bennett (01:01:54):
That has sort of
like a feeling of being special
and a little bit exclusive andthere's a great new speakeasy
not new, but there's a greatspeakeasy in indianapolis that,
um, that I've been to a coupleof times.
Oh yeah, dirt floor.
You go down the basement, youhave to know the password to get
in it's really fun, we'll go,we'll go, we'll go.
Lesley Meier (01:02:14):
It'll be great if
old tiny drinks too and they
want to sponsor our show.
Megan Bennett (01:02:19):
We'd be so happy
to have them.
Lesley Meier (01:02:21):
Yeah, it's fun,
although you know can't tell
anybody about it, of course it'sa total secret.
Look at the Jekyll and HydeClub.
Oh my God, we have to go there.
Megan Bennett (01:02:30):
Look at that.
It's leather and dark Very coolSuper dark wood.
Lesley Meier (01:02:37):
Oh yeah, oh, that
is cool wood.
Oh yeah, oh it, that is cool.
Yeah, that's pretty neat.
I don't know, maybe gen x womenare sick of this shit should do
a tour of immersive spaces.
Megan Bennett (01:02:47):
I'm to rescue her
.
Look big elephant.
Like head on the wall too.
Lesley Meier (01:02:50):
Not a, probably
not no, not a real, but my
goodness, that would be sad, nota real library?
Megan Bennett (01:02:59):
is that a?
Lesley Meier (01:02:59):
shark over the
fireplace.
If anybody's been here, pleaselike give us your review.
Megan Bennett (01:03:06):
Tell us about
this place because we would love
to be there.
Send us your photos.
Lesley Meier (01:03:09):
It's just super
sink and cool.
So while we keep one footsquarely grounded in reality and
taking care of our health andpaying attention to what is
happening, we are also allowingourselves moments of joy and
fantasy escape, escape, escapeand trips down memory lane.
Megan Bennett (01:03:28):
That's a great
time, good times cheers, cheers,
slainte.
Lesley Meier (01:03:34):
Happy saint
patty's day when this comes out
uh, happy international women'sday today, on the day of our
recording.
Megan Bennett (01:03:40):
Thanks for doing
this with me.
It's good time.
Yeah, good time, I'll see younext time.
Lesley Meier (01:03:45):
You have been
listening to Gen X.
Women are sick of this shit.
Hey Megan, hey Leslie, what dopeople do if they want to find

Megan Bennett (01:03:54):

website that people can find us
on, and that is genxwomenpodcom.
We also have a facebook page.
We have an instagram account aswell.
We have a youtube account wherewe put youtube shorts and other

take the time you don't takethe time I I barely talk the
tick.
Megan Bennett (01:04:19):
You don't tick
the tock, I barely talk the tick
.
But I did put a tick tock up.
Lesley Meier (01:04:23):
We're explaining
the internet to people again.
Megan Bennett (01:04:26):
That's okay,
though it's great, we need to
know how the internet works Canpeople buy merch.
They absolutely can.
We have a merch store on thewebsite itself, and we also have
an Etsy store too, so they'rejust pretty easy to find you.
Lesley Meier (01:04:39):
It's just gen x

somewhere and while you're there, give us a review.
Megan Bennett (01:04:50):
Yeah, let us know
what you think.
Throw some stars at us, that'dbe great.
We'll take one, two, three, four, five, maybe ten, and also
make sure that you are hittingsubscribe so that you're
notified whenever a new episodedrops Most important.
We also have a five minutes offame that I think we should tell

it on a little red phone, just
like Batman.
That'd be cool.
Let's get a bad phone.
Lesley Meier (01:05:35):
I think that's it.
I think you're right.
