Good morning, noah.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Good morning and
happy Friday.
How are you?
A lot to be thankful for, andit's always a privilege and
honor to be here every Fridaymorning sponsoring the Hometown
Hero.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Series.
Well, we look forward to it.
We really do, and this week weare just tickled to death to
have Mrs Frances Reese.
I was able to chat with herearlier this week on the phone
and we'll switch over to thatfascinating interview in just a
few minutes with Mrs FrancesReese.
But first we want to check onthe real estate world here in
(01:25):
Henderson County.
Well, the we want to check onthe real estate world here in
Henderson County.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Well, the market
continues to move.
We're averaging some 126single-family homes a month
selling.
We've had more homes sellyear-to-date this year in
Henderson County than we didyear-to-date last year and the
prices are holding.
I mean the averagesingle-family home price over
the last 12 months is at $540.
It's amazing and it's hard tobelieve I mean the hurricane we
(01:49):
experienced coming up on a yearnot too far away.
And again, we know there'sareas of our county and
community that are stillrecovering and it's no
disrespect to the recoveryefforts, but there's a lot of
people are just back to normalin in regards to their real
(02:11):
estate.
it's the real estate market'smoving interest rates are
actually coming down a littlebit.
Um, inventory levels are areholding.
I mean it's it's more of abalanced market.
But you know, life happens, therefore real estate happens
and and we're continuing tonavigate and help so many people
through real estate oh what?
Speaker 1 (02:27):
I ask you maybe I put
you on the spot, but uh, how
are you having listings in thegorge area, are you we?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
actually have some.
We have some in the works uh,you know for different reasons.
I mean, and you know, and yes,we have some property that's
going to be coming up, uh, inthe bat cave area.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Okay, well, uh, we
will be back and close out for
just a second with noah, butfirst, uh, we need to play you
the interview that we uhrecorded earlier this week with
mrs francis reese, our georgereal estate groupometown Hero
this week.
Our George Real Estate GroupHometown Hero this week is
(03:09):
Frances Reese.
And, mrs Reese, it is apleasure to welcome you to our
show today.
How are you?
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Thank you, thank you
Fine, I'm just fine.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Well, it's good to
have you with us, and our mutual
friend, bessie Bright, gave meyour name as someone that I
could chat with about some ofthe history of Henderson County
and some of the different thingsthat you have been involved in.
You are co-founder and co-ownerof Reese Insurance with your
husband, ted, for many yearshere.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
That's correct about
50 years.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Wow, and your
daughter now owns the business.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Well, bessie was
telling me about your
involvement with the Daughtersof the American Revolution and a
national arts contest that youguys that you participated in
Tell us about that, ms reese, okay.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
But back about the uh
joining the revolution.
In 1996 at the um abrahamkirkendall chapter had their uh
first meeting at our officebecause of the ice storm that
(04:27):
came in.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
What year was that
again?
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Our Abraham
Kirkendall chapter that I'm a
member of, dar formed theirfirst meeting at my office
insurance office because of theice storm that came in, they
canceled us at the restaurantthat we had planned to have it,
and about 8.30 that morning theorganizing regent called and
(04:55):
asked if everybody could come tomy office to have the ritual to
start the chapter new.
And I said of course yes.
And and she said I'm glad yousaid yes because everybody's
coming on their way.
One of them came in theirpajamas even, and so we had the
ritual, and and Peavy from theother chapter came also and she
(05:23):
asked for a flag so we couldsalute the flag, and I got one
out of the closet and held it up.
She said you got it backwards, francis.
We had about 12 people thereand everybody signed a paper
saying that they were there atthat first meeting.
And then that was in 1996.
(05:47):
Um, I had entered.
I had been quilting since well,I said since I was nine years
old, but I started quiltingabout year 2000, and so they had
a contest, a heritage contest, with DAR on hand quilting, and I
(06:10):
entered with my quilts that I'dmade and it won first prize in
national contest nationallyfirst place.
And then a few years later Ientered another quilt which was
called Deer Dining Blues andeach block was four inches and
(06:32):
it was a different pattern and adifferent piece of blue and
white fabric.
And I entered that and it camein second place in the nation.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
So I was happy to do
that.
Then, uh, I think it was lastyear or the year before, they
had a uh.
Uh.
They sponsor dar sponsorsschools and one of them is the
indian school and they wantedeverybody, every chapter, if
they, to send a quilt for theirclass there or their orphanage.
(07:08):
And I made two quilts and sentthose in for them and they were
happy to have those.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
My hobby now is
quilting and genealogy to get
new members for our chapter.
Genealogy to get new membersfor our chapter.
Over the years since 1996 Ihave helped 142 new members join
or recommend them to join someof them and other other chapters
(07:38):
in other parts of united states.
They also have chaptersoverseas, and the overseas
chapters were sponsored by alady that was a chairman, ann
Peavy, and she's the one thathelped our chapter start too,
and she asked me one time if Iwould go with her as an
(08:00):
assistant overseas.
Well, at that time I wasworking full-time at the office
and couldn't leave, but that wasquite an honor that she'd asked
me to do that.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
So you literally were
in on the ground floor of the
formation of the DAR chapterhere in Henderson.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
County, yeah, in 1996
.
The other chapter, josephMcDowell, was the one that that
most all those organizingmembers were in before.
There were many others thatjoined right away in that year
and they were, uh, chartermembers, uh, but I was a charter
(08:42):
member and an organizingchapter member too.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Well, congratulations
on that.
And another one of your effortshere, I understand was from
working at the HendersonvilleBusiness and Professional Women
organization and the MerchantsAssociation.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Tell us a little bit
about that Well with Business
and Professional Women's Club.
Bessie one time was thepresident and I was the
secretary and she had, or thechapter, talked about urging all
the businesses in town that wecould contact to have child care
(09:26):
for their employees and she hadme write letters to all the
chapters, all the differentbusinesses that might come into
that category, and we hadseveral that did and we had
several that did.
I think GE was one thatestablished a class for child
(09:51):
care and that was a big plus forour chapter.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
In addition to that,
I understand that you have
worked at the same place.
I do some WHKP Radio.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Yeah, I started out
WHKP Radio.
Yeah, I started out when I wasfirst married.
Kermit called me and asked meif I would work as a bookkeeper
for WHKP, and that's when theywere in their old location,
closer into town there fromwhere they are now, and that was
when I was first married.
(10:27):
He would get Beaver Cab Companyspot announcements to give me a
free ride into town to pick upspot announcements from
different businesses too besidesmy bookkeeping work, and I
enjoyed that.
But then I started my familyand had to stay at home with
(10:50):
them.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
He wanted me to bring
my baby and just put him in the
sound room there while I wasworking, but I couldn't do that
mrs reese, we thank you so muchfor giving us some of your time
and uh and some of your memoriesof uh many, many years here in
Henderson County, over 70 years.
Tell us about today.
(11:11):
Where are you and what occupiesyour time now.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Well, most of the
time I'm here at the computer
working on research for familyhistory and sitting at the
sewing machine sewing quilts forthe First Baptist Church sewing
ministry, where home sewers cando these quilts at top and take
(11:39):
them in, and the girls thereuse long arms to finish them up
to give to charity organizations.
Wow, I feel like that's aworthwhile ministry.
Now, at almost 93 years old, Ican still be doing that and give
to somebody.
We've had five foreign exchangestudents at our house at
(12:03):
different times over the yearsand that was fun too.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
so that's fantastic.
Mrs reese, we thank you so muchfor giving us some of your time
today and and giving us a lotof your time, a lifetime of time
of volunteering and helping outhere in henderson county.
That's the kind of people welook forward to chat with on our
hometown hero series and I suredo appreciate you talking to me
today.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Thank you for calling
.
