Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's time now to get the hell out of your life.
A weekly broadcast with realpeople sharing real struggles
and offering real hope.
Today's show will encourage, inspire and empower you to face
life's challenges with a boldconfidence and renewed hope.
Now let's join our host, ronMyers.
The promoter.

Ron Meyers (00:22):
Hello, my friends, it is so good to be with you
today.
Myers the promoter.
Hello my friends, it is so goodto be with you today.
This is a great day.
To make it a great day afteryou hear some of the things
you're going to hear today.
It's all about encouragement,empowerment.
I'm your host, Ron Meyers, andthis show was started years ago
because I wanted to reach peoplethat did not go to church, were

(00:43):
tired of church, were judged, were compartmentalized.
They were placed over in acorner and said you know, hey,
you sit in the back of the busand when you get your act
together, we'll let you come uphere to the front of the bus.
Well, friends, none of that.
Here we are open to everyonebecause the gospel of Jesus
Christ is for everyone.
There's no such thing in theBible as, hey, get your act

(01:05):
together and come and follow me.
No, in fact, we need to followhim because we don't get our act
together.
And any church out there thatexcludes people because of their
behavior or their lifestyle?
Well, they don't understandwhat the gospel is and they are
denying people, depriving peopleof hearing the truth, the truth
that set them free.
So here's a show that comesalong called Get the Hell Out of

(01:27):
your Life.
And I don't care what organizedreligion thinks about me,
because I will only share thingsand my guests share things that
are in the Bible the gospel ofJesus Christ, freedom.
Freedom, forgiveness and theability to live life for Jesus
without rules, because he rulesour heart and life comes out of

(01:50):
our heart, and we are encouragedand inspired and empowered by a
walking relationship with Jesus.
Not one day a week.
Every minute of every day we dolife with Jesus.
So we are a walking testamentto the power of Christ, and
sometimes we can even open ourmouth and tell people about

(02:11):
Jesus.
So that's my story and I'msticking to it.
My guest today has atransformational story, one that
well, she was set free fromprison.
Shea Walters got involved withdrugs addiction and ended up in
prison, but her faith saw herthrough and today she is free,
becoming the person God createdher to be.

(02:33):
So let's take a listen to thisamazing story.
Shea, what's your story?

Shay Walters (02:39):
Okay, I'm originally from Ohio, but I'm
married now, so I live inParkersburg, west Virginia.
I'm 31,.
Happy home, mother of four.
But I'm married now, so I livein Parkersburg, west Virginia.
I'm 31.
Happy home, mother of four, three that live with us.
And yeah, we're living a goodlife right now, thank God.

Ron Meyers (02:52):
But at one time you weren't living a good life, were
you?

Shay Walters (02:55):
So yeah, actually I struggled with addiction for
about 10 years of my life priorto getting sober.
You wouldn't know by looking atme today, but I'm also a
nine-time felon and I spent acouple of years in prison in
Ohio actually.
So I think a lot of times withpeople that start with addiction
, it doesn't start out, you know, it starts off as smaller
things.
So I like to really touch baseabout how you know I had a good

(03:17):
home life growing up, but I hadthis personality of someone who
was never afraid to try anything.
I almost thought it was cool.
That's how I found my identitywas to be rebellious, outgoing
life of the party.
So it started off with drinkingat get-togethers and then
gradually with marijuana, andthen I would be trying pills and

(03:37):
just gradually I ended upintervening in drug use, whether
that be pain pills or heroin orcocaine.
I ended up a full-blown drugaddict, you know, by 19 years
old.

Ron Meyers (03:48):
During this addiction time of your life,
were there others in your lifeyour family trying to pull you
out of that addiction?

Shay Walters (03:55):
Yeah, absolutely.
My mom was always my biggestfan, and my sister.
It was really hard for my mombecause I think she wanted to
save me so much, but my savinghad to come from God.
No human could have helped me,no human could have made me see
that life was worth living.
And then, you know, drugscaused such a depression and
such, you know, I didn't haveany self-worth.
But then it gets to the pointwhere you don't even want to

(04:17):
live, you don't even want to besaved.
You know you're using the drugsjust to kill the pain of what
your life is like.
So my mom would always try tohelp me.
And then my sister, who's ayear older than me and we were
always very close growing up andshe's never touched anything
and she started researchingenabling and what that meant.
So she would start coaching mymom about not enabling me and
every day she would tell herlike, don't give Shay money.
You know you can't do this, mom.

(04:38):
I've been.
She just researched everythingshe could until you know, my mom
had to cut me off from that andevery night she would message
me before she went to bed andshe would just say you know, are
you alive?
And I would say yes, and shewould say if you want to go to
treatment, please call me.
And I would never call her.
I never wanted to go.

Ron Meyers (04:53):
So you are a full blown addict.
And then you have nine felonyconvictions.
Tell us about those.

Shay Walters (05:01):
Yeah, so it was all.
It was all drug related.
It was nine felony drug charges.
So eventually what happens isyou can't hold a job down and
you're sick without drugs.
But then I would probably sayalmost every drug addict has
sold drugs at some point.
So then, just to support my ownhabit, I started selling drugs
and pushing drugs and I was inOhio.
I was from a small town in Ohiobut I'd go to a bigger city if

(05:22):
I am home, and I just was from asmall town in Ohio but I'd go
to a bigger city if I am home.
And I just was not a very smartcriminal either, so I just kept
getting in trouble with the lawuntil eventually they were like
you know, enough's enough, we'vegiven you enough chances.
And they sent me to prison.

Ron Meyers (05:34):
So in prison, is that where you met God?

Shay Walters (05:37):
I did so.
I met a woman who would comeinto the jail and she would
bring AA meetings in there andshe ultimately became my sponsor
.
But she would come in there andshe just had this light about
her.
You know, people that know, know Jesus, that know God, they
have that joy that you know, that comes from within, and she
was just very kind to me and shewould tell me about.
You know, she worked thisprogram and she's been sober for
35 years.

(05:57):
So I think just hearing herstory gave me a little glimpse
of hope that that maybe I coulddo this, you know.
So I would start to pray, shewould encourage me to pray and
I'd start to pray and thensomehow, through the process of
working these steps, I was justso comforted by God.
I remember I would be in thehole in the county jail and the
verse that says God is close tothe brokenhearted.

(06:17):
I had it scribbled on my walland I'd look at that while I
cried every night, you know, andit's just me and God.
And eventually I just had thispeace about me that it was okay
that I was heading to prison andit was okay Everything that I'd
been through and I could havepeace with God.
No matter where I was at and Ireally really was okay the love
of God enveloped me and I wasjust determined to turn my life

(06:38):
around.

Ron Meyers (06:39):
You know, I was just going to say and you beat me to
it the love of God doessomething to us.
Once I found that love of God,I realized you know what.
I have a purpose.
I'm here for something.
Did you think things like that?

Shay Walters (06:52):
Absolutely.
Some of the women that I was inprison with still reach out to
me.
Whether they're sober or notdoesn't matter, but they'll tell
me little things.
So in prison they have whatthey call a yard and you can go
out there and you can walk lapsor people play sports out there
and they remember we would allbe walking on the yard and they
would be talking about you know, they can't wait to get out and
get high.
A lot of them still wanted toget high and live that life and
they said I would be walking andI would say you guys can do

(07:13):
that.
I'm going to get out and I'mgoing to change the world.
You know, and this is while Iwas still in prison and I like
that's where you don't haveanything physically or
materialistically, where Ididn't have physical freedom.
You know what I mean.
But he gave me freedom thatcomes from the inside and you
really realize that's what it'sabout and that's the voice that
I was trying to fill all thoseyears with drugs or with people

(07:33):
or with worldly things, and thenI realized I don't have to have
anything and I can still beokay if everything's right with
my creator.

Ron Meyers (07:40):
Shay, I believe there are people listening right
now that cannot break thechains of addiction.
In fact, they probably want tooverdose to die.
What would you tell any personthat right now is chained up
with addiction?

Shay Walters (07:55):
That God is a God of second chances and I think he
gets so much enjoyment out ofbringing people out of the pit
and bringing them to just arooftop of happiness.
You know you really like to usethe least likely person to turn
their life around so you can goout and give your testimony to
other people.

Ron Meyers (08:12):
How long have you been sober?

Shay Walters (08:15):
October I celebrated six years sober.

Ron Meyers (08:17):
Congratulations.
That's a long time, six years.

Shay Walters (08:20):
Yeah, just the beginning.

Ron Meyers (08:22):
Is it a struggle every day?

Shay Walters (08:23):
No, not anymore.
No, absolutely not.
It's hard to believe I everlived like that, and it's crazy
because there was a point intime where I couldn't imagine a
day without getting high, andnow I can't imagine a day high.

Ron Meyers (08:34):
I love it.
I love the story of freedom, breaking the chains of addiction
.

Shay Walters (08:39):
I'm a firm believer that, no matter what it
is that people go through that, you go through it to help
others go through it.
Right, so that means mine isaddiction.
And then you know, now, even ifI'm having, you know, if my
husband and I are going throughstuff, or we're a blended family
or you know anything like that, you know we can help other
people with it.
Whether it be, you know, peopleget divorced and they think
that they can't be used in thekingdom of God, you know.

(09:00):
Or people go through sexualabuse or physical abuse or
mental health issues you knowwhatever it is.
Or veterans, you know whateverit is that you've been through,
that you've trudged through andcame out on the other side.
I believe that God wants to useit to bring him glory, you know
, and then you can help otherpeople and somehow, with helping
other people, it brings healingto us as well.

Ron Meyers (09:18):
Now you've got the microphone.
You know your mission, as yousaid, is that you want to change
the world.
That's what you want to do.
You wanted that when you werein prison.
So, right now, what would youtell them?
Right now You're up on thestage, you're talking right to
these people that are hurt, they're broken, they can't wait
to have their next drug, butyou've interrupted their life
and they're going to hearsomething from you, shay.

(09:38):
What would you tell them?

Shay Walters (09:39):
It's so important for us to realize that we can
recover.
I think for the longest timeI'd never met anybody that
really got sober.
I didn't believe that I couldovercome this, you know, and
then you get to a point whereyou can't imagine living the way
you're living anymore.
But you also can't imagine alife where you're sober.
You know, and God can use that.
And all it takes is that firststep, that first step of

(09:59):
surrender, saying you know, whether it be going to treatment
or reaching out to someone elsethat's in recovery, and just
saying I want to do this.
That's a miracle right there toeven have the thought of.
I think I want to get sober, you know, because our minds can
be so far gone that we don'teven think we want help.
We can't imagine a life wherewe're not using.
And I also think it's reallyimportant that, as a woman, I
speak to the moms out there, because I think we carry so much

(10:20):
guilt for what we put our kidsthrough and then that guilt
keeps us from getting better.
Even fathers, you know yourguilt of what you put your
children through, and my sontoday is such a good kid and I'm
not saying that hasn't been astruggle.
There's a long time where mysponsor would tell me that, no
matter what my son said, to sayI know you're right and I'm
sorry.
For a long time I just had tohumble myself and do that, you
know.
But through all of this he'sbecome a better person.

(10:42):
My family loves me.
They look to me for advice anda lot of people come to me for
prayer.
They love my prayers, they lovemy advice, and when they sit
down with me, everything thatthey're saying to me I'm saying
I've been there too.
I've been there too, so much tothe point where they'll say,
like I don't believe you were inprison, I don't believe that
was me, you know.
And just to be a living example, and if I can do it, anybody

(11:06):
can do it.
Like I said, I was a nine-timefelon.
I was arrested probably 30times and upon being booked into
the county jail, they wouldimmediately put me in
segregation because nobody likedme, nobody wanted to be around
me, and now I'm a pillar of mycommunity.
We own a licensed behavioralhealth center and we get to help
people every single day getsober.

Ron Meyers (11:22):
Wow, that's awesome.
Shay Walters her story fromprison to purpose.
Shay, you're getting me firedup about going out there to do
something.
I love it, I love your energy,I love your passion.
But somebody on the other endis saying oh well, God could
never love me.
I've done too many bad things.
I'm just worthless, I'mhopeless.
A lot of people think that,Shay.

Shay Walters (11:42):
I tell people all the time that I thought I had
done such horrible things thatif I can't forgive myself, if I
hated myself so much, how couldGod forgive me?
How could the King of Kingslove me and forgive me?
And he gave his life for us.
There's nothing.
We're not inventing any newsins.
You know he knew what we weregoing to do before we ever did
it, and his love covers all sin.
He wants us to need him.

(12:02):
He often he wants us to needhim.
He wants us to have to cry outto him and it's in that
brokenness that he's able topour into us.
You know through those cracksin our soul that we need him so
much.
That's what he's yearning for.
God comes where there's a need.
So if you need him, he's goingto meet you right where you're
at.
And his forgiveness itoverpowers anything that our
human minds could everunderstand.
It's just beyond ourcomprehension.

Ron Meyers (12:23):
God has allowed you to hit the bottom of your pit
because that's the only way he'sgoing to get your attention.
Most people that I know come toGod after they hit bottom.

Shay Walters (12:33):
Yep, I'm thankful for my bottom.
I wouldn't trade it foranything.
I mean, I'm so thankful for mybottom because I look at you
know, I don't look at church asa punishment.
I'm like what an honor, what anhonor I get to go and spend
time with God.
What an honor I get to helppeople.
What an honor I'm alive.
What an honor.
Everything's just such an honorand I believe that, like,
gratitude equals happiness, youknow, and I'm so thankful about

(12:55):
my life.
It makes it to where I'm ableto enjoy it a lot more.

Ron Meyers (12:59):
So tell us some of the exciting things that you've
been doing.
I've noticed your Facebook page.
You have a lot of followers, sodo you travel?
How can people get in touchwith you?

Shay Walters (13:07):
Yeah, so I have a Facebook page right now it's
just called Shea Walters, butyou'll see it says says for
present of purpose.
You can get on there and youcan reach out to me.
I'm here locally where we'refrom.
We just opened a year ago abehavioral health center and we
have peer supporters, which arepeople that are in recovery,
that help other people.
So we do a lot of that here andmy husband and I, we do travel
and we speak and we're veryinvolved in our church, so we

(13:29):
like to go and visit churchesand pour into people that way as
well.
I think it's really important toblend, you know, recovery into
the church too, so people feelwelcomed there, so cool.
So actually, I was the firstfelon ever hired at my local
courthouse.
So and ever hired at my localcourthouse so I get to advocate
for people there in MariettaOhio and, yeah, we're just doing
big things.
I have a million me and myhusband have a million followers
together on our social mediaplatforms and we just get to

(13:51):
talk about God and recovery andlife and what a blessing it is.

Ron Meyers (13:55):
I imagine he raised a lot of guilt in your life and
when he sets you on that path offreedom you become a very good
promoter for the goodness of God.

Shay Walters (14:03):
Yeah, absolutely.
He wants us to share ourtestimony and there's power in
our testimony.
He wants us to share about hisworks in our life.
You know that's what he wantsus to do.
He wants us to share the gospeland the miracles that he's
performed.
How could God save me?
And I don't want to go out andtell everybody, you know, if you
walk into church and you go inwith a broken leg and you walk
out with your leg, yeah, I don'twant any other life.

(14:31):
I couldn't imagine a life whereI'm not a seeker.
I enjoy it.
I enjoy.
I think there's levels to God.
I mean, you know, I just wantto keep growing with him and
it's so much fun, I love him somuch, I enjoy it so much, I
really do.

Ron Meyers (14:42):
Shay Walters.
How do you get the hell out ofyour life?

Shay Walters (14:45):
Surrender, I just just surrender, you know.
Stay in your word, hit yourknees, pray, do the next right
thing.
That's a good way to live.
Seek God and do the very nextright thing.
Yeah, surrender, because therereally is life after addiction
isn't there, and there's a verse, and I'm not the best at

(15:06):
quoting verses exactly, but itsays his thoughts are abundantly
higher than our thoughts, youknow.
So, whatever it is, if I wouldhave written down everything I
wanted out of my life, I wouldhave sold myself short, because
he wants even more for us thanwe would ever feel comfortable
asking him for.
You know.

Ron Meyers (15:19):
Now I would love for you to pray for the listeners
out there.

Shay Walters (15:24):
Dear Heavenly Father, I just want to thank you
so much for letting me to speakto these people.
God, I want to thank you somuch for Ron, his podcast and
what he's doing for your kingdom.
I ask you to touch everylistener today, god I on his
podcast on what he's doing foryour kingdom.
I ask you to touch everylistener today, god.
I ask you to plant a seed ofhope in their hearts.
God, I ask you to break thechains of addiction and sorrow
and depression and anxiety overtheir life.
I ask you to bring them out ofdarkness and into your light.
I ask you to send your angelfamily to their home.

(15:44):
I ask you to use them, god, andbring blessings into their
house, help them to be bettermothers and fathers and
grandparents, and help them tobe seekers of you.
We just thank you for everysingle day that you give us.
We thank you for the breath inour lungs.
Thank you for everything.

Ron Meyers (16:03):
In Jesus' name we pray Amen.
Friends, when I return, I wantto share why it's so important
to live a faith-filled life.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
You're listening to Get the Hell Out of your Life
with your host, ron Myers.
Real stories, real strugglesand real hope.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
In everyone's life there may be fear, worries,
anxiety over issues of all kinds.
Maybe addictions or bad choiceshave created an unbelievable
amount of drama in your life orfamily.
My name is Mark and this is theJourney.
Today, I want to encourage youthat if you find yourself in a
situation where you don't knowwhat to do, you have God's
promise in His Word that he willhelp you.

(16:38):
Back in the late 90s, after 10years of marriage, I found
myself making some really badchoices that caused my wife at
the time to file for divorce.
The Lord had been working on mebefore that, so it wasn't
really a surprise.
But suddenly my eyes wereopened to the reality of my
reality and I gave my life toJesus.
I had messed it up and knewthat if I was going to do this

(17:00):
Christian walk, I would needGod's help.
In Isaiah, chapter 41, god isspeaking to Jacob and I believe
he says to us also you are myservant, whom I have chosen.
I have chosen you and not castyou off.
Fear not, for I am with you.
Be not dismayed, for I am yourGod.
I will strengthen you, I willhelp you, I will uphold you with

(17:24):
my righteous right hand.
There have been many times inmy life that God has taken hold
of my hand and led me throughunbelievable challenges, and
he'll do the same for you.
You have his promise where hesays For I, the Lord, your God,
hold your right hand.
It is I who say to you fear not, I am the one who helps you.

Speaker 5 (17:54):
Here's another refreshing word from 2
Corinthians 5, verse 17.
Therefore, if anyone is inChrist, he is a new creation.
Old things have passed away.
Behold, all things have becomenew.
You're tired of how you'reliving.
We'll change it.
You don't like where you'reheaded?

(18:16):
Rearrange it.
You're sick of being let downand you want to turn your life
around If you want to startliving right.
Get the hell out of your life.

Ron Meyers (18:31):
Get the hell out of your life.
Welcome back listeners.
You know, right now we areliving in a world that just
seems topsy-turvy.
Everything is going backwards.
What was good at one time isbecoming bad.
What was bad at one time is nowgood.
It puts us in the crosshairs ofall these different views.
And what do you do?
You believe in God, and thenyou talk to someone that says,

(18:53):
well, there's no such thing asGod, and what you need to do is
you have to have an unshakablefaith in God and you have to
have an unshakable faith inbelieving God.
I want to give you a littlebackstory of how I have so much
faith today and it's opened somany doors and really keeps

(19:14):
peace in my life.
It started all the way back inmiddle school.
You know, middle school it's ajungle, a wild, unforgiving
place.
And there I was, ronnie Scrawny, kid Myers, with my
hand-me-down clothes and dorkyblack horn-rimmed glasses.
I was the prey of the bullies.
Every day felt like a battle.

(19:35):
Books would hit the floor asthe bullies knocked them out of
my hand, and one day some bullyshoved me into a locker and
whispered that no one liked meand that they were going to beat
me up after school.
Well, I didn't cry at school.
No, I saved those tears for thesanctuary of my room, where I'd

(19:57):
sit on my bed hard, heavy, wondering if anyone would ever
see me.
You wonder, god, hey, isanybody up there?
Am I just a loser or do youhave a plan for me?
But I had a potential stirringinside of me.
I was a dreamer.
I was having these dreams and Ijust had a peace that things

(20:19):
would be okay.
I didn't have the words then, but what I was really desperate
for, looking back, was worthWorth.
That wasn't tied to the labelsthat others placed on me.
I was looking for acceptance, and I was not accepted in that
school.
And one fateful day, after apunch that knocked the wind from

(20:41):
my lungs, I found myself in theschool bathroom, locked away
from the world.
In that moment I whispered avow to myself Someday they're
going to wish they treated medifferently.
Now.
It wasn't a cry for revenge.
It was a declaration ofresilience.
I was going to show them theywere wrong.

(21:01):
God had a plan for me.
I didn't even really know Godthen, but it was beginning to
work in my life.
That day I made a choice.
I wouldn't remain powerless anylonger.
If strength was revered, Iwould become strong.
If wealth was admired, I'dwould become strong.
If wealth was admired, I'd finda way to achieve it.
If success was worshiped, Iwould chase it with relentless

(21:22):
fervor.
But here's the paradox I'vecome to realize In chasing all
of that, I was still searchingfor something else Acceptance,
not from the world, not fromthose who labeled me, not from
my parents, but from somethinggreater God, the creator of the

(21:43):
universe.
You see, god doesn't care aboutthe labels that others put on us
.
He wants you and I to know thathe loves us so much that he
sent his son, jesus.
When we trust him with our life, we are fully accepted.
We are free and forgiven and wehave a grace that is a power

(22:04):
that will take us to places thatonly God knows.
So if any one of you out thereis feeling lost in the jungle of
life, remember this your worthisn't defined by the opinions or
the acceptance of others.
You stand tall, you embraceyour journey and know that you
are loved just as you are.
