Ron Meyers (00:22):
Hello, my friends,
it is so good to be with you
today.
Have you ever got a song stuckin your head?
I have.
I keep singing Signs, signs.
Everywhere Are Signs from thegroup the 5 man Electrical Band,
but perhaps it's because thatis the title of my show today.
Now here is the question beforethe show Is God sending you and
(00:47):
I signs to get our attention?
Yes, he is, and after youlisten to today's show, you will
see that God is trying to getyour attention, my attention, by
sending us signs.
My guest today is a minister, storyteller, teacher and
spiritual leader.
Gary Lane guides others to putGod's word into practical living
(01:09):
.
Gary motivates individuals andgroups to live a better life in
Christ with his fresh and easyto understand teaching style.
A world traveler, gary shareshis vision of positive daily
living through functionalChristianity to people around
the globe.
Plus, he's funny too.
I think you all like Gary.
(01:30):
Now, gary, I met you back in2005.
Is that correct?
Gary Layne (01:36):
Absolutely yes, 2005
.
Ron Meyers (01:38):
You were here on the
Gulf Coast because of Hurricane
Katrina.
What did you do?
Gary Layne (01:43):
Well, it's kind of a
funny story.
I was supposed to drive the vandown from 1st Baptist Church,
woodstock, georgia, and I wassupposed to help with the
carping houses.
But when I got here they said, well, we really need someone to
handle a food distribution, andso I was volunteered to be in
charge of distributing foodthere on the campus of Baptist
(02:03):
Church.
And after about three days thepastor came to me and said God's
telling me you need to stayhere.
And I kind of had heard thatmyself.
So I ended up staying there forabout 11 months, off and on to
work on Katrina relief.
So I managed the Katrina reliefin the Gulf Coast there for
Baptist Baptist Church on thepass road.
Ron Meyers (02:24):
And you and I got to
know each other because I was
the manager of the localChristian radio station, of
American Family Radio, and youwould come on my program in the
afternoon and give the communityupdates and it really was an
exceptional time on the GulfCoast.
Gary, you've always said thatif it wasn't for the Christian
(02:47):
churches from all over the worldto come here, I don't know if
we would have built out thatfast.
What do you think?
Gary Layne (02:55):
Oh, absolutely, I
mean even at.
I think I first came on inSeptember, october of 2005, it
was probably six weeks after thestorm, because Pastor Kevin had
wanted to give away turkeys forThanksgiving.
I don't remember that, or not?
Ron Meyers (03:09):
Yes, he did Down at
the Coliseum.
Gary Layne (03:11):
I had come on the
air and I had come on the air.
Yeah, that's a whole God storyin itself.
We didn't have anywhere todistribute them, but we were
raising funds and people fromall over the United States gave
money.
We raised $100,000 and I boughtfive tractor trailers full of
turkeys and a company deliveredthose from North Carolina and
(03:32):
it's a God story how we got theColiseum and we worked with the
state police and the localpolice and the fire department
and the sheriff's office and weran the traffic through there
and so, yeah, the whole GulfCoast was really, really
impacted by the church and itdidn't matter if you were
Methodist or Catholic orPresbyterian.
We delivered hundreds of mealsevery day to the FEMA camps.
(03:54):
We had a couple of guys fromFlorida that came up with a
giant smoker Used to smoke threeto 500 pieces of chicken every
day.
We had a company from Jackson, mississippi, that would bring
down tractor trailers full offrozen chicken quarters so that
we could follow those and feedthe Gulf Coast.
We had churches from as faraway as Pennsylvania and Maine
(04:16):
all the way to Seattle, washington, california.
They came from everywhere tohelp.
So God's church really grows up.
Ron Meyers (04:24):
The today, Gary, is
Signs, signs Everywhere are
Signs, and that time in our lifeand I went through it, I lost
everything was house was a signto us that our.
Heard sent a God a person ofof of of of.
(04:45):
Them of.
I talked to were scratchingtheir head, and "You " know what
, maybe there is something tothis Christianity.
Gary Layne (04:54):
You know, there's a
great verse in the Bible.
It says let your light shinebefore men that they see your
good works and glorify ourFather in heaven.
I think Jesus said that, and sothat's what happened.
The good works was tough work.
I mean people slept in tentsand people slept in the rain and
puddles and they endured theheat of the fall with no air
conditioning because the powerwasn't on, no showers because
(05:17):
the water wasn't fixed yet.
And they endured all that anddid the good works.
And so people saw that and didglorify God.
We had many, many people cometo the church and pray to
receive Christ because of all ofthe workers that came to
Katrina relief.
It was amazing.
Ron Meyers (05:32):
You know, gary, for
me personally, katrina was a
blessing because it was aspiritual boot camp.
I came to the conclusion thatif I can get through Katrina and
I did I can get through anystorm in life with God.
Gary Layne (05:46):
And I think you talk
about signs, signs everywhere.
I think the biggest sign camefrom that storm was you can't
make this on your own.
If you think you're independentand you can handle life all by
yourself, then maybe you need torethink that.
And so that's what happened.
A lot of people had to rethinktheir independence of God, their
independence of other people, and found out how important
relationships are, so that's agreat sign.
Ron Meyers (06:07):
Yeah and Gary, after
Katrina came, churches were
filled and people were praying.
But you know, as time went onand years went on, a lot of
people just quit going to church.
Why is it that we run to Godwhen we're in trouble, but when
things get better we just kindof go on autopilot?
Gary Layne (06:31):
I think we forget,
we forget and Satan allows us to
believe that we can beindependent of God and
independent of other people.
And that's what he wants.
He wants us to think that wecan be our own little God and
take care of things all byourselves.
But you know, I heard recentlysomeone say when you get up in
the morning you should thank Godfor five things, and the first
one ought to be thanks forwaking me up, because we don't
(06:53):
keep ourselves alive.
Even we might think we eatright and exercise and keep our
body in shape, but it's God thatkeeps you alive physically and
of course, you want to give thespiritual life as well.
So we forget, we absolutelyforget that we have no control,
and that's another sign we thinkwe have control, but we don't.
Ron Meyers (07:11):
You know, I read a
quote today from what's his name
?
Is it AW Tozer?
Yes, he said this little quoteGod waits to be wanted.
That's pretty cool.
Gary Layne (07:24):
I love that saying
and I tell people this all the
time God is not going to speakuntil we're ready to listen.
And so people say, oh, god isso silent.
Well, maybe we're not listening, maybe we think we've got.
We usually come to him with allour requests you know, god
helped me with this and fix this, and change this and make this
better and do this and we cometo him like Santa Claus instead
of saying God, thank you for mylife.
(07:46):
How can I glorify you today asI walk through this disaster or
this struggle that I'm goingthrough?
And that's part of what mycounseling is all about helping
people walk through theirvalleys.
Ron Meyers (07:57):
Now, gary, I know
you're a world traveler, so tell
us what you have been up to.
Gary Layne (08:01):
Sure, god has really
blessed me with the opportunity
to go and share the gospel andto teach pastors and to
encourage leaders.
Well, pretty much around theworld.
I've been to countries thatwere where it's illegal to share
the gospel and worked withunderground church leaders.
I won't mention the country,but I was in a communist country
and worked with 21 undergroundpastors and we had to have food
(08:24):
on the table every day in casethe officials came in and said
what are you doing?
And then we would say we'rehaving lunch.
I was monitored everywhere Iwent.
I had to make sure I didsightsee because I was there on
a tourist visa.
I've helped train people inColombia, south America, bogota,
nicaragua, chile.
I've been to Chile many times.
(08:44):
I've been to Haiti I can't tellyou how many times I've been to
Haiti to work with localmissionaries and churches there.
Europe I've been in Croatia.
There's a great Christianmovement in Bulgaria.
Evangelicals England wow, justall kinds of places.
And then across the UnitedStates, from Seattle all the way
down into Florida, up to theNortheast.
So God has allowed me to travelpretty much a lot of places.
Ron Meyers (09:08):
And, gary, that ties
in with today's message Signs.
Signs, everywhere Are Signs.
You've went all over the world, you've seen people and they're
hungry for Jesus, aren't they?
Gary Layne (09:17):
Oh, my goodness,
it's amazing how many people are
hungry for Jesus becausethey're live without Christ.
I mean, I know that soundsweird.
When Jesus said I am the way,the truth and the life, he
obviously meant spiritual life, that there's eternal life
through Jesus Christ and he'sthe way to the Father.
But he also brings physicallife.
He brings abundant life youknow John 10, 10b, as they say.
(09:39):
But there's a hunger.
They know they're missingsomething in their life, and so
I've been honored and privilegedto speak at seminaries in
different countries and colleges, and I work with church leaders
and ministry leaders.
Just in October, last October,I was in Croatia, met with 70
leaders from ministries thatminister to the hurting people
(10:02):
of the Eastern European area, the Serbia's and the Macedonia's
and Bulgaria, and so it's been.
God is at work around the globe.
Ron Meyers (10:12):
Amen to that.
Well, listeners, it is time fora break, and when we return,
more on signs, signs everywhereare signs, and you are going to
recognize some of the signs Godis placing in your life.
Announcer (10:25):
You're listening to
get the hell out of your life
with your host, ron Myers.
Real stories, real strugglesand real hope.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
In this age of round
the clock political coverage, I
read an amazing story about apolitician several years ago
that was elected without doingany campaigning.
It's true, mike Overton waselected to the city council of
Springdale, arkansas, withoutgiving a single speech, he spent
no money on advertising, hemade no personal appearances,
nothing.
And yet he won with 53% of thevote.
(10:55):
Mr Overton won the election notbecause of anything he did, but
simply because he was chosen bythe people.
Did you know?
The Bible says that God choseyou Before the foundation of the
world was ever laid.
He settled on you as the focusof his love, to be made whole
and holy.
A relationship with JesusChrist is something you cannot
earn or buy, but you can't haveit by a simple act of choosing
(11:19):
to have faith in him.
If you would like to know howyou can begin a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ, please call 888-MEAT-HIM or chat
with us at chataboutjesuscom.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
I love that song.
Ron Meyers (11:40):
You can see how that
song can get stuck in your head
.
Signs, signs everywhere aresigns, and that is my subject
today, and I'm having aconversation with a friend of
mine, gary Lane, who is on amission, just like me, to help
people get the hell out of theirlife and recognize the signs
that God places in our lives, most likely on a daily basis.
Hey Gary, I bookmarked yourwebsite.
(12:02):
A lot of great information onyour website and that is
FunctionalChristianitycom.
Gary Layne (12:09):
Yeah, I felt God
calling me into this idea of
helping people practically withChristianity and their lives out
of those connect.
Ron Meyers (12:15):
Gary, you said
something before the break and I
think it might be a sign.
If I am missing something in mylife, is God sending me a sign?
Gary Layne (12:25):
Absolutely.
I think the biggest need wehave obviously is Christ, and he
put in our hearts a need tofeel acceptable, a need to feel
loved and lovable.
He put that need in there, butthen he wants to be the person
that meets that need.
So all of us are in some wayslacking something or some that
we're lacking something anddon't know where to turn to get
(12:46):
it.
So that's a great sign.
Ron Meyers (12:47):
You know another
sign, Gary.
I was at a funeral the otherday for a 21-year-old, and it's
just too young of an age to beat a funeral.
But I was thinking.
You know you might want toconsider God.
If you don't realize or havenot prepared for the end of your
life, is that a sign?
Gary Layne (13:08):
You know, jesus said
if you have ears to hear, let
them hear, and if you have eyesto see, let them see.
So, yes, we have absolutely gotto understand.
You know, people prepare forretirement.
I'm getting older now andsuddenly the end is coming and I
want to retire someday.
I'll probably never retire, butI need to look at what does my
future look like as far as youknow physical needs and desires.
(13:29):
And so, yeah, I'm planning forthe future.
The most important future is,of course, eternity, and I think
there's another song that timekeeps on ticking, ticking,
ticking into the future.
Time keeps moving and that's asign that we need to know where
we will be when we die.
Ron Meyers (13:46):
You know, gary, you
said something yesterday.
I said something about.
Well, what do you remember themost About me and this radio
station and the things I wasdoing?
Do you remember what you said?
Gary Layne (13:58):
No, that was
yesterday.
Ron Meyers (14:01):
Well, you said, I
don't know, ron.
I remember one thing though youwere a wild Jesus freak.
That's it.
That's it.
Gary Layne (14:07):
I did say that.
Ron Meyers (14:08):
Yeah, and as I get
older though, gary, and I'm
getting closer to thatretirement age, and I agree with
you I don't want to retire, butI realize the fragility of life
and I realize that there aresome people that have given up
on life, and I have more of areally desire to just show
people that there is a betterway and that things are going to
(14:31):
be okay.
But if everything in your lifeis falling apart, maybe that is
a sign from God.
Gary Layne (14:39):
It's a huge sign.
Change only occurs when there'senough pain in my life that I'm
willing to change.
So if I'm struggling with aphysical problem, then I don't
go to the doctor until it's sobad that I go.
I need to go see somebody, andso God allows circumstances and
life to come on us, or sometimesin an attempt to get our
(15:01):
attention.
You know, it's like a wake-upcall.
You hear people say that allthe time oh, I had a wake-up
call about my weight, or I had awake-up call about my drinking,
or I had a wake-up call aboutmy health and it's like, yeah,
but Jesus Christ is asking youto wake up to spiritual things.
And so a sign is, if you'restruggling right now, it doesn't
mean God isn't there for you,but maybe you're not listening
to God.
(15:21):
So that's a huge sign.
Ron Meyers (15:23):
So, Gary, for the
person out there that hasn't
laughed in a while, has nooptimism, is worried that
everything they do is notpleasing to God, so they just
avoid God.
Isn't that a sign from Godtrying to get their attention?
Gary Layne (15:38):
I firmly believe
you're absolutely 110% correct
on that.
You know, my kids are old andgrown up now, but when they were
little and they wanted to sticktheir tongue in an electrical
socket, I pulled them away fromthe electrical socket.
Ron Meyers (15:49):
My parents pushed me
to the socket.
Gary Layne (15:53):
But I pulled them
away.
Now, in that moment, theythought I hated them, that I was
against them, that I didn'twant them to enjoy the fun of
whatever it felt like, but whatI was actually doing was
protecting their lives because Iloved them.
And so, yeah, there are timeswhen we think God is against
them, but again, that's a sign.
If you're angry all the time, that's a sign.
If you're lonely all the time, that's a sign that God is trying
(16:14):
to get your attention and again, it's one of those things where
it's like wake up.
So these are signs in our lives.
Ron Meyers (16:21):
He loves us so much,
as I said earlier, he is
waiting to be wanted.
He wants us to want him andwhen we want him he will show up
and he will give us.
I believe, if we ask him andwe're serious for a sign Now I'm
not saying that, hey Lord, ifyou love me, I want to win the
lottery today.
But if it's those things thathelp us understand something, or
(16:42):
feelings, or loneliness, or youknow what I'm trying to say,
don't you?
Gary Layne (16:46):
Yeah, absolutely.
What we do is we put conditionson God's unconditional love.
And so what we do is we say, ifyou love me, then this will be
what occurs.
And that's just being selfish.
That's just saying you know, ifyou love me, buy me and get me
a new car.
If you love me, fix my problem.
If you love me, take care ofthis issue.
And we make it conditional thathe loves us based on what he
(17:09):
does for us.
I'm pretty sure that's SantaClaus, not a God, who loves you.
If he loves you, it's not evena question.
He loves you.
The question is will youreceive the love that he has for
you?
That's the bigger question.
Are you willing to let God loveyou?
Yeah, and we push people awayall the time.
So I know we push God away andwe struggle and we were
(17:31):
miserable in life and God thewhole time is sort of sad, kind
of like.
You know I could help you withthat if you'd let me.
Ron Meyers (17:37):
Well, I've had
people say you know, I've been
hurt and wounded and allied toand abandoned my whole life.
Why would God be any different?
Gary Layne (17:48):
Yeah, Well, that's
the great thing about God is you
know the word holy.
It means different, Literally, that's the definition of holy.
It means different.
Holy, holy, holy.
Our God is different, differentthan anything you know,
anything you can experience.
And the other thing, Ron, is,when you talk about that is
that's a sign.
If you're always lookingbackwards at what has happened
(18:10):
in your life and what hasn'thappened in your life, If you're
always looking backwards allthe time, that's a sign that you
are not living the fullest lifethat God has for you.
You know, I always tell peopleit's like trying to drive your
car forward by looking in therearview mirror You're going to
hit stuff and you're never goingto, you're never going to
experience the joy of drivingyour car looking forward.
So that's a huge sign if you'realways looking backwards.
Ron Meyers (18:32):
You know a lot of
prosperity preachers, gary, have
twisted that scripture aboutthe abundant life that you know.
That's all that God wants togive us big cars, fancy homes
and Rolex watches.
Is that what that abundant lifeverse in the Bible means?
Gary Layne (18:54):
I don't think so at
all.
In John 11, 20, jesus said Comeunto me all ye who are weary
and heavy laden, and I will giveyou rest for your soul.
And it's literally this ideathat you can be at peace and
contentment.
And I know the prosperitygospel sounds good, but the
problem is, paul wrote that helearned to live content life
with nothing and with plenty.
(19:15):
And he said In any and everysituation, I've learned to the
secret I can do all thingsthrough Christ, who strengthens
me.
And it has nothing to do withthe circumstances, it has to do
with the strength of God in hislife.
So, whether you're rich or not,you know, that's the thing.
That's a sign.
If we think money will make ushappy, then that's a sign.
If we think that person willmake us happy, that's a sign.
(19:35):
If we're happy, we're happy andpeaceful and contentment
because of what Jesus Christgave us his life what he does
for us, protects us and care forus in a way that's different
than any human could ever do itor anything could ever do for it
.
Ron Meyers (19:49):
That's a huge sign.
And, gary, we have corporateAmerica spending billions of
dollars trying to brainwash ourfriends in how to act, how to
behave, how to create wealth, how to do everything in the
world according to their model.
Gary Layne (20:07):
You're so right, and
we think that money is the
answer to all those things, because if I had money I could
get that new car, if I had moneyI could get that new house, and
then, and then I would be happy.
And the Bible I mean God is thecomplete opposite of that.
That.
Be happy and those other thingsright.
See, keep first the kingdom ofGod, jesus said, and all these
other things will be added.
And so it's about God first andlife second, and when you order
(20:30):
it that way, life starts toreally really be enjoyable.
Ron Meyers (20:35):
Hey, gary, our time
is running out, but before we go
, will you encourage thelisteners and also just a strong
prayer for those of us that arelooking for those signs.
Gary Layne (20:46):
I'd be honored.
You know again, your listenersdon't know me that well In 2016,
I've been married for 28 yearsand it was 10 years after
Katrina and my wife came downwith cancer, very rare cancer.
There was nothing any doctorcould do and we prayed to God
for a miracle and in 2018, shepassed away and that was a tough
(21:09):
time.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Wow, but you know
what?
Gary Layne (21:11):
Yeah, we were at
peace with that in 2018.
So I've been through the deathof a.
You know I was married for 30years.
We had my daughter's weddingone month after her mom passed.
It was a terribly hard day, butyou know what?
We look back on that as God'sgift to her was what?
Taking her home?
And sure I could have beenselfish and said, you know, I
(21:32):
really wanted to spend the restof my life with her.
My point is expectations,nothing guaranteed.
And so what we do is we setourselves up for failure because
we expect life to go a certainway and if it doesn't go that
way, we're disheartened andwe're disappointed.
So my encouragement would be tolook at your life and see what
it is that you wish would happenor thought should have happened
(21:52):
or should be happening.
Where is it that you put yourhope?
And if it's in circumstancesand things, then my prayer would
be that you'd lift up your headand look to God and say, father
, I give up my not necessarilymy dreams and my desires, but my
expectation that life will be acertain way.
And if you will release that tothe Father, I promise you he
will come in and sit with youand he will bind up your wounds,
(22:17):
as the Bible says.
He will make you feel betterbecause you will release this
pent-up anger, this pent-updisappointment, this pent-up
loneliness.
And so the encouraging word isto look to God, and that's where
my salvation comes from, that'swhere my life hits better when
I look to the Father and stoptrying to figure out how it
should be, could be or shouldhave been, because that's
(22:42):
defeating.
And so we want to look forwardto the Father's grace and to the
Father's love for us.
He cares deeply and he wants tobe in relationship with you,
but if you shut him out, he'snot going to come and throttle
you.
He's not going to grab you bythe hand and drag you.
He wants you to come willingly.
And so that's where we have togive up our thoughts and and
(23:03):
will and be willing to change.
So let me pray for us reallyquick.
Father, thank you so much forthe gift of eternal life.
And then, father, thank you somuch for the gift of physical
life.
And, father, those twointersect in our soul, in our
mind and in our heart.
And so, father, would you helpus to see the bigger picture
that you're a god of love, thatyou're a god of comfort, that
you're a god of Grace, and itdoesn't matter what we've done
(23:26):
in the past.
Like pause, as he put the pathbehind them and he pressed
forward.
So, father, I just pray for thelisteners that they hear this
is they would be encouraged tolook up to you, to look forward,
to put the past behind them.
We can't unring bells.
We can't go back and changethings.
They have happened and you'reusing those to glorify yourself,
to glorify the kingdom and thento create in us a sense of life
(23:49):
and a sense of your glory.
So, father, I pray for thelisteners that are that will be
encouraged and their hearts willbe lifted up as they look to
you, the author and theirprotector of their faith, and
that they will see you as thesolution and not the problem.
And I just want to thank youfor writing his ministry, pray a
blessing on that and continueto work through him.
And and Just thank you for hisministry and Jesus.
(24:11):
They might pray amen.
Ron Meyers (24:13):
Gary Lane, always a
pleasure.
I can't believe it's been thatlong and I'm so sorry I did not
know that about your wife.
Again, listeners, I just calledhim yesterday.
I haven't talked to Gary andsince 2006,.
But man, powerful prayer, powerful story, and You'll be on
the.
We'll get you on a regularbasis here, gary.
(24:33):
So one more time your website, functional, christianity, calm.
And Are you on Facebook, socialmedia?
Gary Layne (24:42):
Somebody wants to go
out there and follow you, or
sure I've got a YouTube channelon a Facebook page and Instagram
and Twitter and LinkedIn andall those things.
All those can be faster.

, lead leadership conferencesand I teach small group
leadership and I teach, you know, staff, staff encouragement and
so on and so forth.

We want to encourage you todaywith God's promise to you.
It comes from the book ofJeremiah, chapter 29, verse 11
For I know the plans I have foryou, declares the Lord.
Plans to prosper you and not toharm you, plans to give you
(26:03):
hope and the future.
That's God's promise to youwhen you choose to commit your
plans and future to him.
Ron Meyers (26:14):
Now back to Ron
friends, our time is up and I
just want to recap a few thingsfrom today's conversation as you
go out there for the next weekof doing life.
One is that God waits to bewanted.
God allows chaos, uncertaintyand loneliness in your life
because he's sending you a signhe wants to hang out with you
(26:36):
forever and ever.
And three don't expect yourlife to go a certain way.
Don't look in the rearviewmirror.
Look forward to the things thatGod is going to do in your life
and always read the signs.
And Number four one of the mostimportant things is to thank
(26:57):
God every day for waking you up.
