(00:00):
Welcome to a very special NCAALacrosse Championship episode of
(00:08):
Get the Lack Scoop.
Absolutely.
Jeff, are there any gueststoday?
None.
No, we don't need any.
No.
We have plenty to talk about.
Jay, why is that?
We're coming to you.
We're coming to you on theprecipice of the N NCAA cross
hormone.
In fact.
Two playing games have alreadytaken place.
Jay, we already have to play offaction.
(00:31):
It's incredible.
So exciting.
All right, what's next, Jay?
We're going to, we're almost tothe bottom of the bracket, the
number seven Duke Blue Devilsand the Georgetown Hoyas.
This is going to be a ratherevenly matched contact.
Do you wanna know why?
(00:52):
Not really, but I'm sure you'regonna tell me.
I tell you, Ron Duke has beenawfully streaky.
Talk about Syracuse beingstreaky.
Duke has got like nicotinestains, skidding up and down the
joint here.
Number 25 in offensiveefficiency is Duke and guess.
Where Coach Warren and the Hoyastand.
(01:15):
Number 23 in defensiveefficiency.
So you got 25 versus 23 andoffensive efficiency for G Town.
Guess what number they are?
Well, let me tell you number 11.
And where do you think Duke isnumber 12 on the defensive end.
So talk about an evenly matchedcrew.
(01:38):
It's gonna be amazing.
So Ron, go ahead.
Say something.
This is gonna be a very expertanalysis.
Duke just annoys the shit outtame.
They, they, they just really do.
Is it the hairdo?
Is it the perfect, and there'ssomething about this team that
kind of annoys the shit outtame.
(01:58):
And, and I don't, I don't reallyknow why, other than I've never
really liked the blue Devils.
I, I.
I have to go give Coach Danowskihis due.
I mean, this, this team seemedlike was dead.
His due is amazing.
He's 72 or three years old.
His due is perfect.
It's incredible.
And it, it seems like it seemedlike this team was dead to
rights.
(02:18):
It's Coach Danowski does thisyear in and year out where
you're, they're like Larry GaNthrough the regular season.
Then all of a sudden they kindof get it together.
Yeah.
When it matters, but.
Here's what I, I, I Virginia hadthem dead to rights.
Virginia had like fivepossessions in that ot.
My gosh.
I mean, duke was walking around.
(02:39):
They were like exhausted andbeaten and bloody.
Our poor, our poor friend, largeTiffany, oh my god, duke has a
voodoo doll.
Oh my gosh.
I mean, Danowski just has a, butthis was one game where like,
normally Duke plays really wellagainst Virginia.
They didn't really play well, and they played slow.
And it was like, oh my God, Ijust thought this would've been
this.
That was number 20 in a row inthe regular season.
(03:01):
This would've been the mostunlikely Virginia team to beat
Duke.
And they had him.
But like I said, duke frickingpulled it out.
And if Virginia wins that game, they're in the ACC tournament.
Right.
And Duke and Duke's out sittingat home right now.
And they're probably not gonnamake the playoffs either.
No, no.
No way.
Crazy.
No.
Yeah.
But here they are.
But here they are.
And they could actually make arun.
They're talented.
(03:22):
I mean, they, they're defensemanthis guy Charlie Johnson, I've
been watching him.
He is a shut down defenseman.
I mean, he shut down one guyafter the next he's a stud.
So they got great talent.
Coach, coach Warren, can we, canwe transition to the hoists
please?
Let's please Ron.
I, I really I really like theway Coach Warren has his teams
(03:44):
play.
Think I like the way the guydresses.
Have you ever seen him outfitsamazing, like retro Hoya stuff?
Go ahead.
His caps, he's got rather largeball caps.
Jay.
Yeah.
Yes.
It's like Allen Iverson tell youas a large headed man, I,
perhaps that's the connection, but you too.
We gotta get him on the show andcompare the, your two domes.
(04:06):
I mean, they're both enormous,but I, I just, I, I think.
Coach Warren has built a, agritty culture there at
Georgetown.
His teams play tough.
I mean, having said that, they're another one of these
teams that are kind of hard tofigure, have been kind of up and
down Right.
Throughout the season.
(04:26):
You know, they, they they scoredthree goals in a loss to Denver.
Yeah.
And then scored 21, 17, 19 and16 in their next four.
Correct.
Go figure.
Yeah.
So so, you know, there I, I'mgonna, this is another one where
Jay, I'm gonna take the upsetbecause as I said before, duke
(04:47):
annoys the shit outta me.
And I like Coach Warren and, andthe kind of culture he's built
there at Georgetown.
And I, and I think this is gonnabe, you know, another one of
those kind of, I'm gonna say1210.
Kind of game for Georgetown.
I'm going actually, nine six forGeorgetown.
(05:10):
Oh, Jay, that's'cause Duke'sdefense is very good.
And I'm saying Duke's offensejust goes out there and lays an
egg.
They're gonna only score sixgoals, although, let's go over
the numbers here.
25th offensive, offensiveefficiency for Duke.
That's incredible, right?
25 with all that talent out of77 teams.
And but the defense forGeorgetown is number 23 in all
(05:36):
of d won lacrosse.
And then the offense forGeorgetown is number 11, and the
defense for Duke is number 12.
Mm-hmm.
So it is, it is gonna be a veryclose game, evenly matched game
Jay, but the HOAs are playingwell.
They've got a good amount ofmomentum going here, winning yet
another.
Big East Championship and theyhave rolled these last four,
(05:57):
they just crushed their lastfour games.
Yeah.
The last two of them being thesemi and final of the Big East
Tournament.
So I'm with you, big guy.
I'm going with the HOAs nine sixfor me.
Steve, what do you say?
Alright.
You know, it was interesting asI was researching the, the
mascots here I learned a a smallknown fact that Duke used to be
(06:18):
just known as the Devils beforethey invented Autoerotic
asphyxiation.
So since then, they're known asthe Blue Devils.
Was that on their website?
J Jay, I have no idea what thatany of that just meant.
And I am not going to ask anyquestions.
Don't ask.
I think it would be better if wejust move along from that,
(06:40):
right?
I can only tell you what'swritten in Wikipedia,'cause
that's my source of information.
Put the mic down and slowly backaway.
I was looking to the rosterspots for a tiebreaker.
'cause this one's a, this one'sa tough one.
And, and while while Georgetownhas a Michael Scharfenberg and a
Lucas dude, Manenberg dude stillhas a, a Brody to wheel.
I couldn't decide, but chat.
(07:01):
GPT thinks it's Duke.
So I'm gonna go with chat.
GPT and I think it's gonna beDuke and 11 to eight.
Okay.
It could happen.
Yeah.
But no doubt is that TweetyBird.
There's no, that guy has to becalled Tweety Bird.
There's no way.
I mean, it's a toss up.
You know, duke hasn't won an aCC championship since, since
(07:22):
2012, has not won the NCAChampionship since 2014.
Coach Dino, let's go Jay.
That's that.
You know, sometimes those statsthat just kind of surprise you.
I, I would not have guessed thatit's been 10 years since Duke
has won a national championship.
(07:42):
11.
But yeah.
Who's counting?
Well, Jay, I think we're bothright.
It's been 10 years and this willbe the 11th.
I love that.
There you go.
Right?
'cause they are not winning thetitle.
Yes, they could, but they're notgoing to.
No.
Jay Crazy, crazy.
Jay, we final fours.
We've reached the bottom of thebracket.
(08:03):
Jay?
Yes.
End III The number two rankedMaryland terrapins against the
Air Force Academy fresh off aplay in game win over Robert
Morris.
Jay, this is this one.
I wanna start by talking aboutMaryland.
(08:25):
It's kind of like, it's kind oflike, interestingly, I don't
think anybody's talking aboutMaryland.
Right.
In a way it, it it's, you know, and yet they're 11 and three in
the number two seed.
Right.
But again, as we talked about, they did just lose to Ohio State
in the, in the Big 10Championship.
Right.
But boy, coach Tillman hascertainly had a way of preparing
(08:48):
his teams for the NCAtournament.
Yeah.
Tough to bet against tills inthe NCA tournament.
Yes.
And this, but this, thisMaryland team seems to be a team
that.
Unlike some of the recentMaryland teams, which, you know,
up and down on both ends of thefield, had some of the better
players in the country.
Seems like they're winning withwith depth.
(09:09):
They, they, they have a lot ofvery good players all over the
field, but not the CJ cursedifference making kind of
player, right.
Like they've had in the past.
It seems.
You're right.
And there are two top scorersJay did.
Excuse me, Steve, can we record?
I think Jay just said you'reright to me.
That was, let's rewind that.
(09:30):
Yeah, let's, let's we can replaythat.
It's only taken, it's onlytaken.
Appreciate it three seasons, butI almost said it once.
Gotta pause there, but you'recorrect.
That was the first time, Ibelieve.
But yeah, you know, they've.
They're incredibly consistent.
You know, they're kind of amachine, but they're a low
scoring machine.
You know, their offense isnumber 22 and offensive
(09:52):
efficiency.
Their three top scorers all have38 points or two of them do,
and.
Which is Spanos.
Ursa have 38 points and Kelly'sgot 36, which is like a 2.3
point per game average, which islike half of what most other
teams top players have.
And then they got a bunch ofguys with like 10 to 20 points.
(10:13):
So they, I mean, they are, they're, you know, got a thin
margin there on offense.
And shockingly, you know, they're usually super
consistent, which this team hasbeen, you know, they beat
Princeton, they beat Richmond, they beat Syracuse, they beat
Notre Dame, they did beat OhioState in the regular season, but
they lost to Michigan in thesecond half of the season.
They lost to Rutgers and nowthey lost Ohio State.
(10:35):
So like, you're gonna wonder alittle Jay again, like this is
the theme, right?
Every one of these teams, whenyou were going through their
wins, I'm like, holy cow, howcan you not think they're gonna
win at all again?
And then you go, oh, but theylost to Michigan and lost to
Rutgers and just lost two nonplayoff teams.
So every single one of theseteams, again, with the exception
(10:57):
of.
Cornell, you see that they allhave flaws.
You know that unless they'regiven, you know that on any
given day, if they're notplaying their best or the
matchup isn't quite right, youknow, as you were talking about
Syracuse and Notre Dame right.
That none of these teams havethe, the talent to overpower
you.
Right.
It seems so, it's, that's, thatis gonna, what, what's gonna
(11:20):
make for a really incredibletournament.
I, I, I, again, would not besurprised to see Marilyn make a
run, but it, it sure does seemlike most teams that reach the
pinnacle, they have those one ortwo difference makers, right.
They got a lot of, they got alot of parts, but, you know, the
teams that, that win it all havea couple of those special
(11:43):
players that when it, whencrunch time comes, they're just
gonna make the plays thatmatter.
And I just don't know if Marilynhas that this year.
Right, I'm with you.
It's true.
I mean, when push comes to shoveand the chips are down, Cornell
just gives the ball to CJ cursedand he doesn't even have to
score the goal, although mosttimes he does, everybody you,
you know, slides to him andhe'll make an incredible play
(12:06):
either scoring or moving theball for an assist or getting a
hockey assist.
So Marilyn definitely does nothave people like that.
So they are number two indefensive efficiency.
Their goalie McEnany is 34 yearsold.
He's doing a heck of a job, buthe's an amazing goalie.
He, he's a serious differencemaker.
Their defense is very good.
Offense is only number 22though.
(12:28):
But that number 22 offense willbe going against the number 44
defense in Air Force.
And although Air Force has donea heck of a job, seven in a row,
wins to end their season and winthe conference championship for
the aun.
I think it might be interestingearly, but I got Maryland
winning 12 to four.
(12:50):
Yeah.
Ja.
I think again, it's, it's it'sreally interesting when we
talked about Fairfield earlierand the run they were on mm-hmm.
And you see what three teams inthe tournament who struggled
widely right.
Early in the season and foundtheir mojo and and are coming
into the tournament with greatmomentum, air Force being one of
(13:11):
them.
But I think in this game, I, Ithink they're gonna be
overmatched as your statisticsjust demonstrated.
And but it's, it is cool to seeit's the third or fourth team
that's had a season like that, that like chips are down, they
lost to all these in conferenceteams, then they go on an
incredible run, beat the teamsthat they lost to in the regular
season in the conferenceplayoff, and get into the NCA
(13:33):
tournament.
And it's pretty cool story.
Well, I think Jay, overall, itit, right, it just continues to
show the incredible growth ofthe game and the number of
talented kids that are comingout of high school.
Because, you know, therewould've been a day where if
you're, if you're one in seven,you're, you don't even have a
prayer, you know?
But the reality is that themargin is close.
(13:54):
You can be one in seven and, andbe right, right on the cusp.
Right, right.
And so, which is crazy.
Yeah.
And so, and vice versa asFairfield, you know, found out.
Right.
Even though they ended up 14 andthree.
So yeah, the, the talent levelacross the board as, as we're
looking at, it used to be too,you look, you went through these
first round games and there werethree or four that you just,
(14:18):
there, there was not even gonnabe a game.
It's impossible.
This is just a, a stacked firstround.
Right.
Normally gonna.
Even the last couple years, youmight have an upset here or
there in the first round, butthese are all like 50 50 pick
thems except for like two games.
And this whole setup here, usually the quarter, final
round, I felt like, yeah.
(14:39):
Was almost like a pick them thelast five or six 70 years.
But this is incredible, youknow, with all, we got 16 teams
and really you'd say there's alock maybe on two of these games
and that's it, right?
Yeah.
And, and again, as as I, I keeplooking here, you know, I picked
against Syracuse and I wouldn'tbe surprised if they won the
(15:01):
national championship.
You know, like there's teamshere that could lose in the
first round or I wouldn't besurprised if they went all the
way.
Like Notre Dame and Ohio Statefor sure.
Yeah.
All of them.
And so I think it's gonna be oneof the most exciting, wide open
tournaments we've seen in a longtime.
I'm, I'm just incredibly excitedfor it.
Absolutely.
Now let's get gal's opinionhere.
(15:21):
Dog, you're babbling on off.
Oh, we did.
We did not give him a chance.
Did we did to Ron?
Did I get the score?
Your Maryland score?
That's a courtesy score.
I think I said no.
I did not give a score on that,did I?
Thank you, Steve.
He's trying to get away withthat.
Getting a score.
Yes.
Could be.
It all could come down to thetiebreaker Ron.
Yeah, we need to know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I think this game will be 15to six in favor of the
(15:47):
Terrapins.
Okay.
I don't think the Terrapins havescored 15 goals all year, but
that's good.
Go with that pitch.
Well, John, I think you justtold me that Air Force has the
44th ranked defense in thecountry.
I believe there's 64 Divisionone teams.
So if they're gonna to score 15goals, it seems like perhaps
this might be the opportunity.
There's 74 or 77.
Ron, get with it.
(16:08):
Steve, if you're next.
Maryland, surprisingly, came inin the basement on the Yelp
reviews at 3.2.
That is a shocker.
I was very surprising.
They had 74 ra, you know reviewsand 3.2 very, very bottom heavy.
And the Yelp is huge.
One, two stars.
So for colleges anduniversities.
Yeah.
You know, I'm looking foranything from Air for Air Force.
(16:28):
They did win the, they, theyhave a slight edge on the, the
name game with Blaze DeGraceedging out sto Verno on the
roster spot.
But that wasn't enough toovercome the long odds.
So I'm also gonna go toMaryland, but I'm gonna think
Marilyn's gonna call the dogsoff early to, to get rest up for
the second round.
(16:49):
So I'm looking at like a 10 tofour game.
Ooh, I think that's a good call.
Good call.
Well, that wraps it up.
We went through each and everygame.
Eight games this weekend.
Tremendous.
So, Jay, are we going to, go forthe gusto and pick our national
championship, or are we gonnacome back and, and continue
(17:10):
this?
We're gonna come back in thelater rounds.
Yeah, you can make a prediction.
Pick your finals.
We'll each pick our final.
All right.
I am going to go with Cornelland I'm gonna go with how about
(17:35):
this, Jay?
Ooh, let's hear it.
Ron, how about this?
I'm gonna go with an All Ivyfinal and a rematch of the Ivy
Championship.
The Cornell Big Red versus thePrinceton Tigers.
Jack.
Ooh, ooh.
Checking if that's evenpossible.
(17:56):
It is.
Okay.
Oh yes it is.
Jay.
So Princeton, I know my bracketbeat Maryland after getting
thumped in the regular season.
Okay.
But it could happen.
You're gonna go against Tillman.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Jay, I think we've covered this.
I think that Princeton has, asyou know, a couple of those
(18:18):
difference.
May they have a to Whartonfinalist on attack.
They, they have some differencemaking players and depth that
Coach Madeline's been buildingthere at, princeton.
So I, prince Stone.
Yeah, I hate to say it, butyou're probably right, based on
the stats.
Number eight, offense for theTigers.
(18:38):
Number nine D.
And you look at Maryland number22 offense number 2D.
So, yeah, but I'm not gonna gowith the way you're going.
Of course.
No, I wanna go Big Red versusthe TURPs and then Big Red wins
the championship.
Steve, what do you, what doesthe number say there with the
Yelp and everything?
Bas I never got past the firstround versus a bear, but I'm
(19:00):
gonna go out on a limb and sayit's an Ohio State, Maryland
final with Maryland winning it.
Oh man, I like it.
That definitely could happen.
You got the brackets right andeverything.
I love it.
All right.
I have a bonus here.
I love Jay.
I love, I love Steve how Jaythinks we can't read a bracket.
(19:21):
He's like us to make sure we, Iall working off a piece of
paper.
I, I don't have the bracket infront of me, so I was just
hoping they were on oppositesides of it.
Well, of course, you know, I'mshowing my cards'cause that was,
I was concerned that I was gonnapick the wrong side of the
bracket, but yeah.
All right.
So I have a bonus round Jay, ifwe have time.
Yeah, do it.
(19:42):
So, in, in my research effortsto get up to speed with you guys
on lacrosse knowledge, I reliedheavily on chat, GPT.
So I gave it a prompt.
I said who would win in a fightbetween, and, and dog's gonna
kill me?
By the way, who would win in afight between Ron Doish and Dr.
J McMahon of Midlothian,Virginia?
(20:02):
I, I had to specify'causethere's a lot of Dr.
McMahon's as you can imagine.
I'm gonna read you verbatim whatchat GPT said, oh, this is
great.
And a hypothetical physicalconfrontation between Ron Doish
and Dr.
John McMahon of MidlothianVirginia.
The outcome would likely favorDr.
McMahon.
Yes, due to his extensivebackground in sports medicine
(20:23):
and podiatry tripping ankles.
Now cutting.
It goes further to say Dr.
John McMahon is a podiatrist andsports me medicine specialist
with over 25 years ofexperience.
He earned his bachelor's degreein biology pre-med at Brown and
his doctorate in podiatricmedicine from Temple.
I.
Dr.
McMahon completed a three yearresidency at Bon Secor, New
(20:44):
Jersey Health System, where hetrained under a leading
pediatric and orthopedicphysicians.
He is certified by the AmericanBoard of Pediatric Surgery and
Foot Surgery and reconstructiverear foot ankle surgery.
Yes, Dr.
McMahon specializes in sportsrelated injuries, overuse
injuries, and reconstructivefoot and ankle surgery.
He operates adult, you know, this is the name of your
practice, adult and childhood.
(21:05):
Oh, for the love of God.
Now, Ron ish is an educator andnonprofit leader with a
background in educationaladministration and development.
Oh, real softy is there to theassociate Head of School of
Moses Brown and in Providence,Rhode Island, and later took on
the role of Chief DevelopmentGlobal Global Sales Officer at a
DC Nutrition, A company focusedon GL combating global
(21:25):
malnutrition.
While Dogless has demonstratedleadership and dedication in his
professional endeavors.
There's no public informationwhen the police malnutrition guy
on the planet on, so that'sgood.
There's no public informationindicating any training or
experience in physical combat orstrength conditioning.
Given Dr.
McMahon's specialized knowledgeand training and physical
performance, dog is' lack ofsuch expertise.
(21:48):
Dr.
McMahon would likely have theupper hand in a physical
altercation.
It's cracking me up.
So there you have it.
It's on the internet.
He must have paid you a lot ofmoney.
Yeah, I mean what?
Absolutely not run.
This is reality case.
The facts, the truth hurts Dr.
(22:09):
McMahon.
I mean, this is, this isartificial intelligence.
Intelligence, Ron.
This is what's changing theworld.
Yeah.
No, I'm screwed.
You are screwed, Ron.
You're just a big softie.
That's what AI is saying.
My God, that Ron, oh my God.
There's no evidence of himhaving any experience in
physical confrontation.
Well the, no, that's John.
How does Che gt Rich to hisnose?
(22:32):
They gotta do their homework.
How does, how does Che GPT knowthat you weren't the grandma
master of ceremonies at CapaSigma?
Exactly, exactly.
I'll give you a physicalconfrontation.
So this why I'm not reallyworried about AI yet.
You know, I mean, I can't evenget my spell check correct, but
it doesn't know that dog playedfootball either.
Come on Steve.
I'd give dog a good run for hismoney.
(22:56):
Oh, that is beautiful.
What a great episode.
I hope our listeners are lovingit and we will come back next
week after this rounds games andsee where we went and maybe make
some predictions for the weekgoing forward, provided you guys
are gonna be in the country.
Yeah, there's another excitingepisode of Get the Lacrosse
scoop.
Get the lax scoop, get itstraight, Ron, get the LA scoop
(23:19):
as we come towards the end ofanother tremendous season, Jay.
Absolutely.
Steve, excellent work.
I love the criteria, and weshall do it again next week.
I'm psyched for this weekend.
It's gonna be awesome.
Well, gentlemen, it's been atremendous evening talking about
the tournament.
(23:39):
It's getting me very excited foran incredible weekend of
lacrosse.
Absolutely.
Enjoy the games everyone.
A hundred percent.
Can't wait.
All right guys.
Have a great weekend.
We will see you the next time.
All right, cool.
until we meet again.
Here's to hoping you find thetwine.
(23:59):
We're signing off here at theget the lax scoop.
Thanks again so much.
We will see you the next time.
