Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's uh we've been like.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
For you Yeah, it's been uh, it's been an adjustment,
you know for sure.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
But you know, we as a staff, you know, we've
come together and and try to figure out, you know,
where we all have to uh you know, pull a
little more weight.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
So to speak.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
But you know, at the end of the day, it's
it's football and our process you know, has stayed the
same as much as it can, you know, just trying
to identify, you know, how we have to game plan
like we typically do and if there's any areas that
people need to do a little bit more and we will,
but just more volume for me, more more stuff to
get through than you know before.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
The most noticeable change Wednesday was DB's tackling thrills with.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Dre and Brian Cox.
Speaker 5 (00:46):
How is that your idea?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, we did.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
That was a tackling circuit, you know, which we've done
before and sometimes we do it a little more often
than others. But that was a collective staff idea, just
something that we felt like we needed to work on
and emphasize. And there's times when working on those types
of fundamentals tackling or whatever, are it's more beneficial to
do it in an individual setting, and sometimes it's more
(01:12):
beneficial to do it in a group setting. And at
that moment in time, we thought that we go, you know,
go that route, and so that's that's why we did
it that way.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Clearly has been problematic, right, Yeah, what do you what
do you you know, you're a different eyes, different voice hip.
What do you see as the problem there? Like what
do you need to improve to fix that?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:32):
I think there's a you know, a couple areas. You know,
if you look at the big runs from the other
day or any of the big runs this year, I
think it's a combination of scheme, you know, are we
getting aligned correctly and are we getting the adjustments communicated.
It's also technique and fundamentals as well as you know,
(01:55):
making or missing tackles. You know, like one of the
ones the other day, you know, got out Technically we
could have been sounder up front and had guys there
to get gibs down and didn't make the tackle.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
In other areas, you know, we didn't get a front
adjusted correctly, and so it's it's really a couple of
areas and and and that's you know, as a staff,
we've been focusing on how can we as best as
possible improve all of those areas. I mean, anytime you
give up that many yards, it's a multifaceted thing.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Going back on Monday, I'm we're surprised all just because
there's guys on the staff for you know, Ben DC's
before and then what was Mike communication like when he
you know, obviously offered you this role.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, you know, I wouldn't say, you know, my first
thoughts were with Shane, you know, and as as a man,
I felt you know, for him, and and felt having
been a part of his staff, you know, personal responsibility
and disappointment that we didn't do better for him. So
that's where my initial thought was. And you know, but
(02:55):
Mike just communicated that, you know, he was going to
go with me as a play caller moving forward, and
you know, I wasn't surprised, you know, having said that,
we do have other guys on staff who have experienced
calling plays and that type of thing, and in my opinion,
it could have been any of us, you know, But
I just took it as a challenge and an exciting
opportunity for me and just was excited to get rolling
(03:17):
and do the best I could, knowing that.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
You know, our staff does have good coaches.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
And you know they're all there to lean on and
it'll be an all hands on deck approach anyway, So
that was kind of where my thoughts were at the moment.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Sometimes hard to tell just on a guy's job title
on his Wikipedia page if he's called plays before.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Have you called plays anywhere at any time any games?
I have not? Yeah, this will this will be the
first time.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
How do you work with that, Charlie?
Speaker 5 (03:44):
How how do you I mean, is there a prep
work for you this weekend? I mean, how are you
getting ready for this opportunity?
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yeah, you know, we're We've done some call up periods
in practice and we'll continue doing that, you know, and
then just watching games and going through the calls, you know,
that type of thing. But it's just you know, as
a position coach along the way, you're always preparing for
this type of moment anyway, you know, and in games
have your own thoughts of what calls you might go with,
or even in a game, just you know, suggesting it
(04:13):
to the play caller, you know, over the years, so
you know, that's kind of naturally just how coaches think
you know, but but yeah, I'd say this week just
kind of getting reps at, you know, putting myself in
those situations and what the moment would call for and
what what the menu looks like in those moments, and
then being able to make a decision.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
In real time, which people respect from it.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Charlie Bullen the defense, like, what do you what do
you believe in it?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
That cannot doubt what I.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Mean, it's a player driven league, there's no doubt, you know,
and coming you know from it from my perspective, coming
from my position room where there's three first rounders, you know,
I understand fully that it's a talent driven league and
a player driven league. So to me as a coach,
you know, my philosophy is always players overplays, you know,
and how how can we as coaches, even as a
(05:00):
position coach, maximize our players' abilities, you know, and put
them in position to have success, you know, a for themselves,
maximizing what they're good at. But then also defensively, you know,
it helps us if we're putting burns and advantageous situations
or decks and advantageous situations or holland you.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Know, that helps us.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
So you know, I'd say at this point, you know,
it's hard to wholesale change, not that I do that anyway,
but you know, we've got years and months of time
on task in this scheme, and so I don't think
it's something you can change completely. You know, I think
we can tweak and alter, but you know, as best
I can, I just want to put these guys in
position to succeed so that their skill sets are maximized
(05:39):
and they can play as fast as possible.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
A lot of assumptions. You worked on their Evans show,
So it's going to be aggressive, a little more aggressive,
more guys at the line of scrimmage, create confusion, Like
is that sort of what you believe in that heart?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
It might be it might be no advances.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
A great friend of mine and a big mentor of mine,
and we talk quite a bit, you know, even before
this type of thing. So and he's influenced me for sure,
you know. So you know, we'll see, we'll see where
it goes.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
Like you're going in Monday night and you get a
tune up against you know, the JV team from down
the street. What kind of challenge does that add to
this whole thing? With knowing that you're going against an
offense and a quarterback that's kind of humming right now.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, it's it's a it's a big challenge, you know.
And I don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I'd say Josh McDaniels is one of the top coordinators
in the history of the NFL. And he they're there,
he's challenging to face as a coach, and their personnel
is challenging and Drake May's playing, you know, at a
really high level right now. So you know, Josh, he's
a great play call and a great offensive mind, and
it is a big challenge. And you know, I had
(06:52):
some years in Miami as a position coach, seven years
in the division, you know, you know, have some experience
going coaching against him in that uh, in that regard.
But it's it's a big challenge, you know, and it's
something that we're we're doing everything we can to be
ready for. But at the end of the day, it's football,
and whether you know it's this opponent or that opponent,
it's your job as a coach to you know, put
in the prep work and identify, you know who it
(07:15):
is you're playing, what they do best, how you take
away their best players and plays.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
And and go from there.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
But but they're good and he's good, so it's a
big challenge. The thing on everybody's mind is like.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
The Giants have a seven point lead with ten minutes
left on Monday night, Like how are they going to
close it out?
Speaker 3 (07:31):
So like your thoughts on they're not all the same.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Of course lead is in the ninety point lead, but
I'm getting the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Ston Yeah, no doubt. You know, that's something that we
have to fix. If you want to win games, you
have to finish, you know. So I think again, going
back to the run defense, anything that's not successful, you
got to look at why, and you know, there there's
there's a there's a couple.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Of reasons why. You know.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Again, where can we schematically make sure that these guys
can execute the call so that their their plate is
as clean as possible before the balls snaps, so they're
in position correctly aligned and can execute, you know. And
if that's an issue, then we got to help him
as coaches, you know. And then you know, guys got
(08:17):
to do their job and then when they have a
chance to make a play, they they've got to make it,
you know. So whether that's a little bit of all
of those things or a combination of you know, that's
what we focused on looking at this week, and that's
what we'll try to address moving forward.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
With the way a couple more with the way Burns
has played, I'm curious just what now that you've seen
them kind of progress you mentioned before, just kind of
how his off season was so impressive With where he
is now, just how impressed are you with that work
paying off without he's played the season.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Yeah, very impressed because to me, he's a guy that,
you know, is in year seven, he got paid. You know,
naturally someone like that could possibly take their foot off
the gas, but he hasn't, you know, And it's just
a reflection of how good he wants to be and
his are to be great, you know, and he's he's
committed to doing whatever he has to to be great,
you know, and so it's been it's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
He's he's a great player. His approach has been fantastic and.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
That's been really fun for me as a coach to
be a part of and do my part in that.
But at the end of the day, the players are
the ones playing, and they're the ones applying their process,
you know. To their quest to be great and he's
done that. It's been awesome to see.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
What do you think about your first game, you know,
as a coordinator, A big primetime Monday night.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
I think it's another game, you know, and it's a
it's a great opportunity, you know, but it's football at
the end of the day, and you got to make
the calls and the players got to believe, and you
got to make.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Plays and execute. So just another game.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
How much has Mike been like hands on with you
because he's got a lot going on his plate, and
then just how much has even in your room or
you know, you guys meeting that type of thing.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
I'd say, you know about normal a little bit more,
maybe just kind of making sure that you know, our
workflow isn't a good spot. But but nothing on the talk
about the same
