Speaker 1 (00:00):
Obviously it was only day one, but what did you
what did you see from Jackson? Day one? You answer
your question, he operated fine, did a good job. See
if we can build on a little bit today.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Are you seeing it a little bit more with each
class you've got acclimated to. Have you seen the adjustment
to them up to getting up a speeding turns of
like being ready to go right now?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
As the post of the years, bro, it's still this same.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Thing, Yeah, same thing for these young players. There's a
again a lot of information, not just the football side
of it, all the other things that go into moving
and being on a new place at a young age.
There's a lot of work that goes into a lot
of meetings. There's a lot of mess ups and mistakes.
You just correct them and then you see if the
guys can take the teaching and instruction and improve on
(00:48):
it the next day.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
And that's just try to build it each day with
these guys.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Usually for most young players, it just doesn't doesn't happen
like that.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
You seem to be in a really good spirits yesterday.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
You move around, you have smile and a kind of
throwing a couple of jabs at people like do you
just attribute that to being back on the field and
kind of back into that element, getting that feeling back.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
What's the alternative? What I what do I usually do? Well?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
No, he's just no, Yeah, you enjoy being out there
on the field. You know, like the guys we got
the opportunity to work with, but it's always good to
get back on and field rather than be in the office.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
He probably worked your career, Brian. A lot of rookies
that at this stage. I mean, even as of course
and we've seen the little jittery back there or wide
eyed Jackson, did seem comfortable? Like was that something that
you picked up on that he seemed kind of he's
back there even on day one.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, I mean there's nobody rushing him.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
He did. He did what he was supposed to do.
He was prepared.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
He he put a lot of time and effort into it,
and you know, I got a lot of appreciation for
how he's gone about short amount of time his business
and that's what's most important, is how he can get
him to a routine meeting with players extra having walked
throughs at the hotels. Communications. That's part of playing quarterback
is being on top of all those little things, and
if he can't be on top of them, then the
(02:10):
other guys, if they don't know him, he can't direct
him in the right direction.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
So in terms of where he threw the ball, and.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
I mean there's not we're not running any exotic coverages
or having a pass rush or pressure. So there'll be
time to develop that. But what we've asked him to
do and how he's gone about his business as a
young pro at that position is important as.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
You you saw it or you've heard or you found
out about it when he was meeting extra with some
of his teammates. And what goes through your mind when
when you see a young guy doing that, Yes, we should.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
Do it's quarterback, yep, I imagine not everyone does the
good ones do?
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, a good one.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I mean, it doesn't guarantee you that, but that's part
of being a quarterback, part of being a leader, making
sure that you know you're on top of your stuff.
But in order to be an effective quarterback, you have
to have all the other guys around you on top
of their stuff. And at this early part of the state,
you might get a receiver, what do I got?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
What I got? And if he can't answer that question,
then you know he's not really doing his full job.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
He's got you know, he needs to know everybody's responsibility
playing quarterback.
Speaker 7 (03:11):
Did he have to be told that, Jackson or did
he just do that?
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah? I think he's got some natural natural leadership qualities.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Look, we communicate, we're trying to teach as much as
we can, not just plays, but a lot of other
things that we believe are important for a young quarterback.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Will continue to do that.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
He's got the right traits for it.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
Was that Casco with the walkie TALKI yesterday, have you
made a.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Decision on good? Good? At observation.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
A duel talked about kind of you guys are trying
to help him become a leader to what are you
trying to see from him?
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Maybe kind of take that and the it'll stay one.
Speaker 7 (03:46):
But just what do you say from him challenging him
in that way?
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Say the same thing.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Look, he's these two guys were high picks, so they'll
have some responsibilities not just you know, knowing when to
drop or when to rush or who to throw it to,
but leadership things that will ask them to do in
terms of the group. Again, he's they got such a
long way to go. I know, we had a big
press conference for the first day.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
There's not much exchanged from from day one to day two.
Speaker 8 (04:10):
When you started this, Yeah, rookie Meunia camp. I mean,
there were eleven on eleven's. There was a lot of stuff,
you know, a lot longer practices. I mean when you
look back at that, I mean you you know, we
could have asked you one hundred questions about that back then.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
You know, it looked like a real camp. Some people
don't even do rookie camps right now.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Nothing, I mean, I mean, the biggest thing I noticed
is the nice bags they got from the ni L's.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
They didn't have those nice bags before. There's a lot
of nice bags in the in the indoor right there.
It's probably a lot of nice cars in the taking
a bus right now.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
But do you do you?
Speaker 8 (04:47):
I mean, you got a lot out of that as
a coach, you know back then. I mean it's kind
of look and say, well, we can't get that at it.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
No, I'd say, I mean again, Paul, the biggest thing
that you usually try to get out of a rookie camp,
at least where I've been and who I've worked for,
is kind of get to know them.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
It's you don't have pads on, you're not playing football.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
There's a lot of things, there's anxiousness, there's so much
information that you're trying to give them they're trying to retain. Again,
it's an very very introductory So I wouldn't say that much.
Sorry that me apologize. I wouldn't say that much has
changed relative nobody's making the team or anything like that. There,
you're kind of just taking starting at the beginning of
(05:25):
the alphabet here, coach just.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Building all All's question.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, it's still weird for me looking at this roster,
the rookie meeting campus. See in twenty four to twenty
five year olds, So you see like the difference between
the age group that you used to deal with when
you first got into where we are now is that
nothing really.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Changes, not too much. I mean, again, they got a
little bit more money.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
In their pocket from how college football is nowadays. But yeah,
they're all coming to a new spot. They're all meeting
new people, they're getting new color, they're getting coached different techniques,
they're learning new playbooks, they're learning where things are in
the city. I mean, there's a lot as you know,
if those of you have children their age, which I
do have a bunch of them, a lot of things
that are going on in their lives when they're young
(06:06):
twenty year olds, so the times they change, you try
to acclimate the best you can to help them and
where they're at, but make sure they keep their feet
around it where they're at and do the right thing.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
The nil deals and money and pocket the bags. Has
that helped at all with the evaluation of kids where
maybe a variable of how are they going to handle
their first NFL paycheck? You don't have to think about
that anymore.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
That's a great question. I don't think I have a
great response for you. I know you.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
You know back in the day you'd ask them, hey,
what are you gonna get with your first contract? Well,
most of them have, you know, have had that already.
So whether you got Louis bag or Mike Spair, Jorge,
whatever it may be, that's a great that's a good question.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
We saw cam behind the plays kind of mirroring everything,
yeah yesterday.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Was that something that he just kind of did on
his own?
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Did somebody talk to him about it or is that
just him being anxious and wanting.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
To be out, don't.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
He's going to do whatever he needs.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
No. Look, you try to steal as many reps as
you can as a player, particularly to a new system.
So there's a lot of guys that you know can
watch and visualize it and see it, and some other
guys and.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Camp can do both.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
He's a pretty smart guy, but some people like to
go through the mechanics of what he would be doing,
you know, ten yards behind him, see it the way
that the running back season in the same spot. You know,
it's something that we do with a lot of our guys.
You know, he's a pretty conscientious young man. How do
you sort of after this, I can talk, how do
you sort of integrate them and the next step into
(07:34):
the rest.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Of the team.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, so we'll be in a phase two, which we are.
This will be another week into that. Our strength coaches
have a good plan to get them going in the
strength and condition and part of it, and you know,
there's a lot of extra meetings for the rookies to try.
You you try to catch him up as quick as
you can.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Jordan again jump in this week. Yeah, yeah, so and
then someone will be at the premiere here and you know,
later in the week.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
But there's a lot of things that again they're so
far behind just in a few weeks, and a lot
of guys have been in their system for a while.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
So you're just you're spending as much time with them.
They have to put the time in as well.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
You know, they're responsible outside the building to make sure
they're doing the right things to put themselves in a
good chance to come out here and compete and show
what they can do. And if you don't know what
you're doing or you can't do it, you know quickly,
then other people will get a chance.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
To do it.
Speaker 7 (08:27):
I think they you know, normally, under those circumstances, you
always hear guys say, you know, well, there have been
a time in their careers where they've been freshmen and
they have to assimilate with juniors and seniors. That usually
goes over a course of you know, four years. Sure,
this is basically a course of four days. And now
these young guys are gonna have to jump into a
locker room that's essentially been together. Do you or your coaches,
(08:53):
I don't want to say like to see, but kind
of watch personality, see how guys you know what you
think you have. Yeah, see how they kind of mesh
right now.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
When they join the school with the with the veterans. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
You know, look, our job as the coaching staff, you
do a lot of work on the college players, but
do you really know you don't get to know the
until you spend a lot of time with them. Stuff
they like to do outside the building, inside the building,
what makes them tick. That's the job of the coaches
to make sure we do that. And you always like to,
you know, see them integrate with the with the veterans. Again,
I think we got a confident rookie group. They all
(09:27):
know that they haven't done anything yet other than show up,
and but they're they're on time, they're doing what they're
supposed to do. You know, they got a little grit
to them. So we'll just try to develop them. And
I'm sure you know our veterans we have, we have
good guys in those rooms. You know, they'll they'll help
them along the way. But you know, those young guys
got to help themselves out the most.
Speaker 7 (09:44):
Also part of that you said something about, you know,
if they're getting things wrong and they don't know things, yea,
the teammates, the locker rooms are going to. The locker
room is going to really be the one that kind
of calls them on it a little bit too, So
I would imagine there's a little bit of urgency from
that respect.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yeah, and and they're in competition, so again, I don't
want to just use a rookie, for example, if an
eight year veteran doesn't know what he's gonna do, and
then play.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
A rookie ahead of him if he does. Like, it's competition.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Either you go out, you know what to do, you
can do it at a high level, quickly, communicate, well,
know your responsibility.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
That's what you know.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
That's what this time for the next however many months
until we build our team, which is a long way away.
But those are the evaluation tools too that you're using
when you can't be in pads and things like that.
Is communication, discipline, your attitude, your commitment to the team, you.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Know, all those type of things. You learn anything about
a duel here in the first few days in the building.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
I mean, he looks like piciently when you just look
at him. Yeah, that's why I was picked third because
he looks like that. But he plays like that as well. Again,
you know, it's it's hard. He's defensive lineman. You can
see you guys can see his quickness out here and
things like that.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
But I almost have more like personality. Uh yeah, okay,
I got you.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
He uh good kid, conscientious, good communicator and discipline with
the things we asked him to do. Has a good attitude.
You know, those those guys that were drafted, you know,
it kind of again it's day one, so but they
they're they're interacting pretty well with one another.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Offense, the defense, defense, offense. You know, I like the
young guys we got
