Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everyone, you can identify who's stood out this spring and
cut your eye.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I think everybody's done a good job of improving from
where we started to where we are now. We talked
about that this morning. We made a lot of improvements
in a number of areas, both individually and collectively as groups.
And you know that's what this time of year is for.
And training camp will be here in thirty four days,
so you know, we got to hit the ground running.

(00:27):
What do you send them off with after this this
quick practice today, As far as you know, the typical
get better, don't get in trouble, do a lot of stuff.
Is that kind of your basic message to these guys. Yeah,
First and foremost, what we accomplished in the OTAs and
in phase one, Phase two and phase three, which we
put a lot of good work in, we can't lose

(00:48):
that in the next call it thirty days. In terms
of our physical abilities, our techniques, our training methods, we
have to come back when training camp hits. You know,
you have a don't have much tolerance for mistakes during
training camp seasons getting close, So we have to be
prepared mentally and we have to be prepared physically. Then

(01:10):
we have to make good choices and decisions outside of
the building. You used of a routine for the last
three months, and you want to represent yourself in the
organization the right way.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Talked a lot of talk me a lot about, you know,
the plan for Jackson and how you're going to a
press him and move him along when you when you
look at that duel, though, is it just kind of
go do it well?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
I think all the rookies have a of a learning curve.
A duel has some special traits about him. You know,
some of them you can see out here. Obviously his
ability to bend and get off and you know, create
some issues in the backfield. But you know, we have
to play the run game, we have to play the
pass game. He's smart and he's picked up things. We've

(01:51):
We've used him in a number of different areas. You know,
I'm glad he's here. He's done a nice job with
all the additions you made on defense.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Did you ever sit down with Shane and kind of say, like,
all right, let's let's see some of the creativity now
to use these different guys.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, you know, you constantly talk about that scheme, technique,
decision making process and certain down and distances areas of
the field. That's a continual conversation. We'll have those, you know,
throughout training camp. Shane's done a nice job of orchestrating
all those things. As of the position coaches, there's a
lot of good give and take. You know, Mark Montmanual,

(02:25):
we brought in from the Jets, who's had a lot
of experiences, added a lot of value to our defensive staff,
as well as Dre and Cox and all the guys
that have been here. But that's a constant you know,
communication offense, special teams, defense. You really kind of figure
out your team throughout training camp and then the early
part of the year, and then you try to do
what they do well.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Ran we haven't seen elite practice this spring or toked
him how's he doing?

Speaker 2 (02:49):
He's doing good. Yep.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Any concerns about him being ready for the start a
training camp?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
No, what was the what was.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
The plan with him in the spring line? Is it
just a situation where just needed rest or like what's.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, we were just you know, every person's at a
different part and call it rehab if you will, or prehab,
and you know, we just did what we thought was
best for Malik to try to get him as healthy
as we can.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
When did you kind of realize he was going to
need the rest because he did a lot of stuff
at the Pro Bowl and.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
All, and then it was just you know, the gap
to show up here and it hasn't really done too much. Yeah,
he's had some issues, you know, like I said in
the past in college with it, and again that's just
that was the plan that we came up with for
him and for our football team with that experience, with
that ex thirty four days to train camp. Do you
have a date for Campion? Yeah, we're again we're as
Patty ash yesterday. We're real close on that, but it'll

(03:38):
be things change, But right now it'll be the twenty
second injury about Cam secataboo and I'm sorry, Charlotte. No.
Cam and Darius.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
How they're doing.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
They're progressing. Yeah, again, we got thirty four days here.
We'll do everything they could do to get ready and
hopefully they'll be ready to go.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Did they do something here or they came in with
something pretty distant? We didn't say him do much of anything.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah. I mean they're they're rehabbing and doing the things
we're asking to do.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
It seems like you are on the side of caution
in the spring with with like with putting guys out there,
especially in live drills.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
What's what's your philosophy. We're sort of on that philosophy
is if they're ready to go there, they're gonna be
out there, and if they're not, they're going to rehab.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
I think the same standards as great, you know, as
season wise as you're saying one more time, did the
same standard as you know the summer and season same thing.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah, if guys are ready to go to participate in
the things we needed to do, they'll do it. And
if they're you know, we think it's better served that
they're rehabbing and doing the things they need to do
with the trainers, and then we'll do that. That experience
that you said Mark Plant brings to the secondary. How
have you seen that impact Deonce specifically? Yeah, i'd include
Jeff Burst in that as well. Those guys have done
a nice job. But again time will tell here as

(04:48):
we as we get going and it's more competitive and
we're playing against other guys. But they've done a nice job.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
At this point, we've seen Deonta and Cordell obviously rotate
a lot. Do you just view that spot as an
open competition.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, I would. I would say that, you know, we'll
we'll find out who the starters are at the end
of training camp. Guys are getting different reps against different people,
not just in that spot, in different areas as well,
and we'll give everybody an opportunity to earn their role.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
But some guys obviously called get any ref for the twos,
So just really that spot's are different than Paulsen doesn't
take any ref with the two's.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, again, there's open competition in a lot of spots,
you know, and we'll give everybody an opportunity to earn
the role, and whoever earns it will be the ones
that play that cornerback two spot is open. Then, yeah,
I'd say there's a number of spots over I'm not
going to get into specific stuff. They think a lot
of Deonte, we think a lot of flat. They're both
produced for us and you know a number of different ways,

(05:40):
and they both deserve an opportunity to compete. I guess
today Russ, you know, kid his fourteenth season.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I know it's his first year year, you know, was
presented with well you're looking forward to taking a little
bit of.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
A break now.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
And he was like, no, is that just kind of
something he said, Or do you expect to take a break?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
He was like, no, I wish we could keep going.
I wish we'd keep going. Yeah, I think he's got
a routine after being in the league for fourteen years.
He you know, he loves this whole process, loves the spring,
the weight room, loves doing everything he do to get
ready for a season. That's why he's had the success
that he's had. You know, I'm sure he'd keep going
if he could keep going, But he has a good
routine that he's followed for a number of years to

(06:21):
get himself ready for July. Make quarterbacks more.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Quarterbacks a little different position than most in regards to,
you know, the information and what you ask from them
quarterback talking about I'm with you, I'm sure with Jackson,
what do you tell him, you know, in the next
six weeks or whatever going into the summer, Like, what's
your advice to him on sort of the best way
to handle this quarterback?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah, it's not much different than than the other positions.
He's going to have time to work on his craft
individually fundamentally when he goes away. But he's going to
have to do a good job of staying in his
his iPad, if you will, and reviewing. The thing thing
is that we've covered, you know, you can't have much
contact with them during the next few weeks until they
get back. The rookies will be back earlier than the veterans.

(07:07):
We'll get going with him, but he's got a lot
of you know, a lot of studying to do. I
know he'll do that. He's gonna have his playbook, he's
gonna have his video with him, so he'll they'll grind
away games.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
You send guys off, like we always talk the end
of the season about exit meetings. Do you have exit
meetings now and send guys off? What kind of checklist
of what you want them.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
To work for?

Speaker 5 (07:29):
And is it everybody or just select guys.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, So when the when they get here, all the coaches,
individual coaches meet with with each player in their room,
and then the core special teams guys meet with Gobie.
They go through a number of things, things that we
think they're doing really well or they've done well on tape,
whether it's free agent or rookie, someone we had last year,
and things that we think they need to improve on
and focus on throughout the spring, and then at the

(07:52):
end of the spring you sit down with them again.
All the individual coaches meet with him again and say, okay,
this is what we got accomplished. We said, A, B
and C need to improve. Look, A, B and C
all improved, but maybe not as much C. So this
is something we want you to focus on over the
next thirty days when you come back ready to go.
Or maybe there'll be another thing that pops up when
you're when you're practicing that you know you talk to

(08:14):
those guys about
