(00:26):
The Giants fall to the Green Bay Packers twenty seven
to twenty. John Schmelk, Tiki Barber Bob Popula remains with
us right here on Giants extra point.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Tiki. Let's begin at the end.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
The Giants drove the ball down on a third down
inside the twenty yard line, had a chance to try
to get the ball into the end zone to tie
the game. Late Jameis Winston, after having four or five
depending on how you won accountum interceptions dropped throughout the course
of the game, throws it to the left corner of
the end zone, intended for Jalen Hyatt, turned into a pick.
Jalen Hyatt looks like he cut his route off. What
(00:59):
did you see explain to the fans will happen.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Well, just overall, they're My overarching take from this game
is that the Giants can play with almost any team.
They're just not good enough at the important positions to
win the games against any team, including defensive back. If
we saw at Cordell flot not being able to make
a play on the ball, Deontay Banks quitting on a play,
going into the end zone on a run play, and
then not making a play in the back of the
(01:23):
end zone, you see Jalen Hyatt also cutting off a
route that is going to get thrown. So on that play,
Jamis Winston has a corner and a inbreaker, a corner
and a dig on that on the left side of
the offense, and the ball is going to come out
on time no matter the coverage. So if it's Cover
two and the corner sitting low, then he's gonna be
(01:44):
wide open into the corner. If it's Cover three or
Cover four, he's got to break the thing short, almost
like an out route, a deep out route, but the
ball is coming to him. Jalen Hyatt doesn't play football
like a wide receiver who wants to get the football
and it's lack of urgency, which is going to ultimately
ruin his career. I mean, he's already a bust for
(02:05):
the New York Giants. But you can't not run that route,
the route the ball is going to come out. Jamis
is five steps and the ball is coming out. There's
one thing we know about Jamis is that he's going
to stand in the pocket and deliver the ball where
it's supposed to be. And the reason that looks so
bad is because Jalen Hyatt wasn't where he was supposed
to be. Jameis Winston thought he would be there, and look,
(02:27):
if it's defended, it's defended. But you can't quit on
a play. The ball is going to come there. You
cannot stop running your route because you think it ball's
not coming to you. And that's what happened. Jalen Hyatt
is running that corner route. He sees the state of
that deep corner sinking and in his mind he says,
the ball's not coming to me. But a good wide
(02:48):
receivers don't do that. A good wide receiver thinks the
ball is coming to me. Every time he didn't do that,
and it result in an interception. It ultimately ended the game. Look,
they didn't play good enough to win this game. They
were stupid in so many different ways. They played not
smart football. We thought somehow that the firing of Dabe
was gonna create this this lift.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
It kind of played exactly the same.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
It felt exactly the same, And that's frustrating in a
lot of different ways.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, about the second place, I was gonna go new coach,
same exact ball game. I mean, Mike Kafka is gonna
take the podium in a little bit and he's gonna
be asked about how the defense didn't get a stopped
end of the game. The offense could have made enough plays,
and it's the same old story.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, and we keep talking about the talent on the
team and all that other stuff. But to Shane Bowen's credit,
in this game, he rushed more than four. He brought
more people. Right, So at the end of the game,
you have them in a third and ten. What is
supposedly the strength of this team is their ability to
(03:51):
get after the quarterback. Abdul Carter was drafted third Overallan
Burns leads the NFL in sacks. Where's Dexter Lawrence. I
know Thibodeau's not playing. And yes, they made Jordan Love uncomfortable,
but they didn't make him that uncomfortable. He couldn't backpedal,
slide to his right, slide to his left, and throw
(04:11):
off his back foot. A prayer that Cordell Flott mistimed
his jump.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Held them both four seconds back there?
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Correct?
Speaker 6 (04:18):
So where is that pass rock? Where is dexter? Lawrence
abdul Carter?
Speaker 4 (04:24):
I mean, I'm just so happy that the Giants and
the Sims family and Lawrence Taylor didn't give the number, right.
I mean, because listen, let's go with earning things a
little bit. Earn to be a great name and number
that hangs in these rafters. Ticky's number is there, and
all these great players, let's do it on the field, right.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
It's got to happen on the field first. And where's
the clothes out? Where are your big gun?
Speaker 3 (04:52):
The problem for me, Bob, and I've said this so
many times on Evident Dicky and and all the time
on the radio, I hate rookies because of what you're saying.
You create this expectation in your mind, first round player,
he should be a dog right away. Sometimes you get
it like Malik nighbors was that he led the league,
almost the league and receiving as a rookie after missing
two or three games with a with a concussion.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
But he was a dog, lived up.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
To Saquan, lived up to the bill absolutely. Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. And with Abdol Carter, what I saw
a lot in this game is that that he thinks
it's patented, but it's not. This deak out, let me
come underneath and try to get inside of the tackle
and get to the quarterback. But everybody knows you're gonna
do that, and so he's he's a one trick pony
at this point. Sometimes it works in he gets pressures,
(05:38):
most times it doesn't, and he doesn't get pressure and
he compromises the edge.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Your entire rush discipline is shot because Love scrambled out
a couple of times off that where because he knows
it's coming right and then he was able to make
throws down field just.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
And by the way, the Packers ran plays to that edge.
They ran the end around early in the game for
seventeen yards. They ran to read option and Malish willis
to that side. Carter did not stay outside. They did
a multiple times.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
There's a book on Abdul Carter in his young career,
and he's got to change and involve if he wants
to really get good at this. I remember Simeon Rice,
edge rusher for the Arizona Cardinals, ultimately ended up with
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but when he was Arizona, the
book on him was he is if if it looks
like a passing down, he's getting wide and he's going
right at the quarterback. We used to run right at
(06:27):
him for yards upon.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yard, run inside of it, outside exactly because you knew
the book on him. Abdul Carter has really got to
start fighting against getting a book on him because he
does the same rush over and over.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Yeah, that's why they didn't want to play you guys
in the air two Playoffs's right if she didn't blow
the San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Bad memories, but it's true.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Game Breakdown is brought to you by your local Ford
stores for it probably salutes to those who served time out.
We'll come back here from Mike Kafka the first time
on the podium after the ball game on the w
f AN Giants Radio network.
Speaker 7 (06:56):
You're listening to Giants Extra Point on the w FAA
Giants radio network.
Speaker 8 (07:06):
Makes the shot guns stop back to throw Bobs one
rifle Watson who makes the catch for the touchdown.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
Over the defender.
Speaker 9 (07:14):
They had him double cover too.
Speaker 8 (07:17):
Watson second touchdown catch for the ball game, and the
Packers are back and front.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
And they would kick the extra point to go up twenty.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Seve or make the two point conversion part of me
to go up twenty seven to twenty and that's the
final score. Packers beat the Giants. I want to Connor
to play that coming out of the break, guys, because
a lot of fans I'm shrewing at calls when we
take calls later on the postgame show, they're gonna want
to blame the defensive coordinator. I think that's gonna solve
your problems. But third and ten, you rush five. Nobody wins.
Flott has coverage. He can't make a play on a
(07:48):
contested ball. They have double coverage on the game winning
touchdown in the corner of the end zone. To me
and Tiki, please correct me if I'm wrong. To me,
it looks like players are in position to make plays.
They're just not unable to know.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
You're asking black a sixth round pick who you cut
but not Quartell flat but it was Black on the
touch yeah right, But on the saveon Williams player to
set that one up, it's court off.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I look, at the end of the day, superior, the
superior athlete is going to win plays like that where
quarter of flot is a smaller corner he can get
physical around he and his awareness is an elite and
Semeon is a good play. He's big, he's like six
exactly and look at Cordell flo exactly right. That's my point, right,
(08:30):
And so physically he can't win that matchup, so we
want to, I think intuitively, blame the coordinator.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Damn it, Chaine Bowen. What's wrong with you? You stink
you call the wrong thing. Other than not getting home,
it was.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
The right play call, and then they miss timed his
jump and then he miss time just jump.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
He's out physical.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
I mean, if he can't make plays on the ball
touch down on the first half, Dame Belton's in perfect
position on cover two coverage. He has the receiver down
the field, doesn't get his head around, runs into him,
gets called for.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
So what I'm alluding to is that simply the secondary
is not good enough, right. We we want to blame
that coordinator, but in truth, the secondary it can't play
at a high enough level against some of the better
teams in this league and the better wide receivers in
this league. And on the touchdown pass to Christian Watson,
who's a big wide receiver, you have Corey Black and
(09:19):
Dane Belton. How Dane Belton was on the down side
of that play is confusing to me as the safety,
but it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
You're in position you got to make a play on
the ball.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
And by the way, how about the Anti Banks right
next to Christian Watson touchdown.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
That's that's where the root of your entire problem is,
right because you trade it up in the first round
to take Tay Banks right and that ball in the
end zone where Christian Watson goes up with two hands
and he's airborne with it and he comes down with
it and Banks has got his hands in there.
Speaker 6 (09:49):
You have to be able to rip that ball. You
cause it in completion, Gott.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
He needs to complete the act of that catch going
to the ground, and you have all of those movements
that have to happen for it to be a touchdown.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
For you to jar that ball loose, and.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
So now you're playing Corey Black with the game on
the line because you don't trust Tay Banks, who you
drafted in the first round. So there in lies the
problem is that Banks has never developed. Jerome Henderson was
his position coach in the first year, wink loved him,
wink leaves Jerome Henderson winds up losing his job last
year because Banks got worse and it's not getting any better, right, So,
(10:30):
like so a paulse and Adebo feeling discomfort in the
pregame warm ups because he was supposed to play in
this game. He was not one of the inactives change
the landscape for the game. Most likely Banks had to
play a lot more snaps. And then when he didn't
give you any effort on the touchdown run where he
went in basically high and just grabbed the shoulders of
(10:52):
the back of the two yard line, who just went
into the end zone standing up, yea.
Speaker 6 (10:57):
At that point in time, it's like, dude, like, what
you doing here?
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Do you do?
Speaker 9 (11:00):
You do?
Speaker 2 (11:02):
You want to compete?
Speaker 4 (11:03):
And I think that's what is carlso upset is you're
playing with Isaiah Hodgens, You're playing with Wandell Robins, who's
a nice player, but he's not.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
No one's really game planning, right.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
You're playing with Tyrone Tracy and an older singletary, You're
playing with Hyatt, You're playing with whoever and the third
string quarterback, third string quarterback. Okay, but they fight, They
Van Roton and Runyon and Bellinger, Theo Johnson. They're fighting.
(11:35):
And the problem that you see on the defensive side
of the ball is from some of your big ticket items.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
Where's the fight?
Speaker 4 (11:43):
How do you let a guy just run through you
at the two yard land, if anything, deliver a big
blow to le at least even if he runs you over.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Right, we're playing football at the ball whatever, we're playing football.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
It's a context, right, And it looks like Deontay Banks
wants to play this sport like he's playing flag football
or powder puff because he doesn't want contact and he
doesn't contest footballs.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
And that's not good.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
You're not gonna win, especially when you're in a place
of importance in the secondary on a football team that
is trying to win football games.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
All right, let's think a quick break. We'll come back.
We should have Mike Kafka on the podium. In a
couple of minutes, the Giants again fall to the Packers
twenty seven to twenty.
Speaker 7 (12:24):
You're listening to Giants extra point on the WFAN Giants
Radio Network.
Speaker 8 (12:33):
Second and goal inside the wall, Winston over center, keeps
it himself, breaks the plane he's in for the touchdown.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
That Jamis Winston touchdown capped a fifteen play, eighty five
yard drive and that gave the Giants a twenty to
nineteen lead. But unfortunately, the defense was not able to
hold things on the Packers' next possession. They went out
unscored and the Giants lost to the Packers twenty seven
to twenty. That was today's scoring drive of the game,
brought to you by Citizens. For every scoring drive this season,
(13:08):
Citizens will donate seven hundred and fifty dollars to the
Giants Foundation to support their work tackling important community issues,
improving overall health and empowering our youth. Were waiting Mike
Katka's first postgame press conference. John Schmelt, Bob Papa, Tiki
Barber with you and Tiki. Another game that the Giants
were in that they could not close out. I want
(13:29):
to go through a couple of the positives here, because
there I think there were some. I thought this was
the best we saw Tyrone Tracy run this year. He
was physical, he was aggressive, he broke tackles, He caught
a couple screens that he had to break tackles, made
some big plays. I thought Tylon Tracy looked really good
as a one running the Tyrone Tracy from twenty twenty
four is back. Earlier in this season, he was dealing
with that shoulder injury, and I thought he was running
(13:51):
soft or scared of taking contact. And that's natural when
you're a young player, especially one who's only been running
back for three years. But he was fantastic in this
game game Tyrone Tracy. He ran through contact, he ran
through tackles. Those couple of screens that we saw, making
plays at the point of catch, breaking tackles and picking
up big yards, some of them long to go situations
(14:13):
to get the first downs, and he got the first down.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
So a heck of a job by Tyrone Tracy. But
we were just alluding to this, or Bob was talking
about this early just a second ago. This offense fights
right those l I mean, save the last drive, which
was an interception. They scored a touchdown right before the half.
Then they went fifty six yards, got four first downs,
got close, ultimately turned it over on downs near the
(14:37):
goal line. They didn't go down and score a touchdown
the eighty five yard drive that you said.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Like, Cafe is aready downstairs? Take exactly. So they did well,
and Mike Kafka is on the mic.
Speaker 10 (14:45):
Now you see on the interception down there.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
Yeah, you know, I'm gonna go back and look at
the tape on it. You know, I didn't get a
good picture off the replay. I'll go back and look
at it. But here's what I do like is that
our guys were playing aggressive and Jamis had an aggressive
mindset all day, and you know, I think he's trying
to give his guy a chance right there at the
end in the end zone to go score touchdowns. But
I'll go look at and see what what happened exactly.
Speaker 11 (15:10):
It looked like jailing. He has kind of stopped his
route a little bit. Did you talk to him and
all on the sideliner?
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Yeah, I hadn't a chance because we were just kind
of onto the next one. And just so again I
go back and look at the tape and see if
that was the case a defense here.
Speaker 11 (15:23):
I mean, this seems to be a theme this year.
Speaker 9 (15:24):
With the fourth board.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
Our defense is batting to playing their butts off and
just you know, at the at the end of it,
we got to make a couple more plays. But I really,
I really like how we approach it today. Aggressive mentality
across the board. There were some one on one opportunities
on the back end the front end that we got
to make, and you know, I'm gonna continue to challenge
those guys to do that in practice and that'll eventually
turn off before us.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Is that as a way, did you talk to Shane
about this week about an aggressive mentality that maybe he
has nothing?
Speaker 5 (15:50):
It's something I talked to the whole team about to
staying aggressive no matter of the situation, and that's what's
gonna get.
Speaker 9 (15:55):
Us over the hump.
Speaker 10 (15:57):
In the way that you you call the game today,
it was a factor.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
It's something we talked about special teams, defense, offense, just
kind of knowing where it was at where we had
field position wise, so you know, a certain direction it
might have affect a little bit more another direction not
as much. But our game plan was our game plan.
I thought our guys went out there, just came up
a couple play short.
Speaker 11 (16:16):
You were obviously aggressive too with the fourth down plays.
Speaker 12 (16:20):
Why is being aggressive going to get you open them off?
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Yeah, we want to be regardless. We want to be aggressive.
And that's to me as a as a former player
being around a lot of good play callers head coaches
like you want to have aggressive mentality on offense and defense,
special teams. So that's really the messaging throughout and continue
to be aggressive, whether whether it's one on one situations,
(16:43):
whether it's by play call or was just by style
of play. You know, I want that to be a
stamp of what our team's about.
Speaker 11 (16:48):
Why didn't that do play on the opening grave?
Speaker 5 (16:51):
That was a coach's decision. That's something we talked about,
and I want to make sure it was my decision.
So we'll just keep the rest of that in house.
It will keep the rest of that in house. Just
this was a coach's decision for me, and talk to
that duel like, there.
Speaker 7 (17:02):
Were a number of cases where you had a pile
and the pile moved in your team's favor.
Speaker 11 (17:07):
What did that say about effort beyond the execution?
Speaker 5 (17:10):
Yeah, I love I love the effort. Our guys play
with love it, and we're going continue to distress it.
It's what we're about. It's you know, finishing longer than
the guy with the football. That's what we're about, offensive,
defensively and special teams wise. And you saw that we
got to continue to make that a staple of us
and the consistency throughout with the work week in practice.
Speaker 11 (17:29):
What are you trying to set an example there with
a duel?
Speaker 13 (17:32):
And you know, obviously said coach's decision there with not
playing him on the opening drive.
Speaker 11 (17:37):
He played every other stamp the rest of the game.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
Yeah, he played his butt off, He tailed, he he
practices tail off, played his butt off. I'm really happy
about a duel and excited to watch him continue to
grow and continue to play a lot more as a pro.
And that, in fact, the.
Speaker 11 (17:51):
Original question was the original question was that you're trying
to set an example there? Has had it important to
you to do?
Speaker 6 (17:57):
That is the rest of you whatever he was that
that that's not acceptable.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
I love I love it duel and what he brings
to this team, the skill set he has. This guy
loves ball and you know, I'm excited again to attack
watch him attack this week of practice and and continue
to work and grow and be the great player that
I think he is.
Speaker 14 (18:16):
What kind of adjustments did you have to make now
that you're the head coach versus your previous.
Speaker 10 (18:20):
Role as the assistant head coach.
Speaker 15 (18:22):
You say that again, what kind of adjustments there you
had to make being the head coach this week versus
your previous role.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Yeah, you're you're just you're talking a little bit more
with the special teams in defense. You're still working with
the staff and just everyone getting communicating and collaborating and
getting everyone on the same page. But you know, those
are probably just the two minds, the two things off
the top of my head, just a little bit more
communication with the rest of the with the rest of
the coaches and players on the other side of the
other side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
What was your message to the defense before they went
out for that we're wound up to go ahead touchdown there.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
Yeah, let's go get it attack, be aggressive, and let's
go get the ball back. Did you think I thought
they played I thought they played really aggressive. I really did,
And you know that will make some more plays. We'll
continue to work at it. But I like the style
in which we called, in which we played it.
Speaker 10 (19:06):
What was it like for you today overall?
Speaker 16 (19:07):
Just in general?
Speaker 10 (19:08):
How unusual or comfortable were you?
Speaker 5 (19:11):
You know, I haven't had a chance to really go
back and think about it yet, you know, still fresh off,
fresh off the game. So we'll go back and evaluate it.
But you know, look at some of the things that
we got to improve on and have those focused for
the remainder of the week.
Speaker 10 (19:23):
Go for two and you scored on that last drave Yes, Like.
Speaker 13 (19:28):
Was there ever a point today where you for the game,
you looked around and you said to yourself, I'm a
head coach of the National Football.
Speaker 12 (19:35):
League for the first time, just emotionally, When did that
feel like to you?
Speaker 5 (19:39):
No, my focus was on the game. My focus is
on the players, putting them in the best positions, and
again just just thinking through you know, how we were
going to play the game again, talking about some of
the weather stuff, some of the substitution stuff. So that's
really all My focus is just on the game.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Is there a way to get your team to make
game winning plays?
Speaker 11 (19:56):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 10 (19:57):
I mean, like on defense, Love has a lot of time, then.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Burns gets late pressure, the bull just floats up there
and Cortel Flatt is there and he doesn't make a play.
Speaker 12 (20:05):
You know, if he makes a play, maybe win the game.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
So is there a way, you know, repeatedly to tap
see if your team could make those plays instead or not.
Speaker 5 (20:12):
Absolutely, we're gonna We're gonna keep on stressing it. We're
gonna keep on working our tail off from practice and
keep on putting our guys in those situations because I
believe in them, and I think we get more and
more opportunities at those plays. We're gonna make.
Speaker 13 (20:23):
Him Jackson was here today, was on the field before
the games, and your expectation that he clears before next
week's game against the lines.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
I don't want to get too far ahead on that.
I know he's still in the protocol, so we'll just
kind of play it as as the protocol goes with The.
Speaker 10 (20:36):
Doctors say he's here.
Speaker 11 (20:38):
So I imagine if we.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
Had we had our whole practice squad here, we had
anybody that was up on the on the sideline to
help create some energy, create just be a great sounding
board for our team. We're all in this thing together,
so those guys are a part of the group, and
so they'll all be here for home games as long
as we can, because those guys are a critical part
of the team.
Speaker 12 (20:56):
He said, you like Todder aggressive Jane as well as
but overall, how would you?
Speaker 5 (21:02):
I don't think there's any much else saw it. Add
on Jameis, I just gotta watch the tape. But I
love where his mindset was the entire game. He was
very positive. I thought he was completing a lot of football's.
I thought when he had opportunities outfield, he took him right.
And that's just kind of my snapshot view. But I
like where James was at. At no point was he
was there any kind of indecision. He was very decisive
and played and managed the game and got us in
(21:23):
and out of good looks, got in this out out
of out of plays on the line of scrimmage, handled
that tempo very well. So I'm I was happy with Jamis.
Speaker 16 (21:30):
Just to get back to Ian's question about who you
know taking it old?
Speaker 11 (21:33):
Do you think there will be a moment when that
when that will happen when.
Speaker 5 (21:36):
You I'm sure there will be, you know, not right now,
but I'm sure there will be at some time.
Speaker 11 (21:41):
Nick Jones was in at a slot corner Nick Jones
was and what prompted that change?
Speaker 5 (21:46):
Yeah, you know the defense. You know, they wanted to
make a substitution there for just to put him at Nickel.
Speaker 9 (21:52):
It was, it was.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
It was a good idea and I think he did
a nice shot, made a nice little play there on
third and two.
Speaker 12 (21:56):
Mike, you know, you have to watch the tape. But ultimately,
what was the difference.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
You know, I'm going to go back again, like I said,
to watch the tape. You know, I think there's some
one on one opportunities that we could have taken advantage of.
And you know, we'll look at it, see what what
those players were, where those players were, and then see
how we can work out it fundamentally, you know, kind
of go back to, all right, how can we make
this thing better and really just be really really critical
of that as a staff, really really be critical that
(22:21):
as a player unit and a leadership group, and then
go get those corrections fixed.
Speaker 10 (22:25):
What was it like having Isaiah Hodgens back this week?
Speaker 5 (22:28):
Isaiah Man, I'm so proud of him stepping up on
a short week, short notice, coming in on a Thursday,
and being a huge part of the offense. Critical fourth downs,
critical third downs, critical blocks on the perimeter. This guy
just stepped I'm super proud of them and happy we
have them.
Speaker 17 (22:45):
What a much you're running game today that you look
like it was, you know, everything was pushing forward little.
Speaker 10 (22:49):
It was a pretty good defense you're playing.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
Yeah, the run game went. I'll look at We'll look
at the tape again and evaluate, you know what what
we did well, what we didn't do well. But they
they came downhill. We ad just kind of early from
some of the outside zone stuff, a little bit more
downhill stuff, and our O line, you know, accepted that
challenge with versus a really good front. I thought I
had some good production of it. I don't have the
exact number of it, but Trace and Motor ran well,
(23:11):
the on line ran well. And also we'll just go
back and look at and see what that what the
overall looked like.
Speaker 11 (23:16):
Mike.
Speaker 13 (23:17):
I know that you're happy with their aggressiveness and then
some of the adjustments on defense, But at the end
of the day, you guys lost this one of the
defense gave up a game losing touchdown drive to end
it again in the fourth quarter. Will you reevaluate or
evaluate your defensive staff and potentially changes there, either at
the coordinator or play calling.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
And that's that's the beauty of football. It's a team game.
It's never about one person or one side of the ball.
Every every unit had opportunities to make plays. And so
it's a team. It's a team game, and it's the
best team game in all of sports. So we're gonna
look at it. We're gonna evaluate everything. We're gonna evaluate
all the players or evaluate all the coaches of the calls,
be hyper critical of that and then find out those
(23:55):
areas where we can we can be better and knock
those things out. And that's what we're gonna do this
week in practice. So it's it's it's it's all of us.
It's all of us together on it, and we're gonna
get arm in arm and go get back to work.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
Thanks everyone, back Mike Aptus breck scofference was brought to
you by Hackensack and Marine Health. Keep getting better. We'll
take a time out react to it. Right after this,
the Giants fall to the Packers twenty seven to twenty.
Speaker 7 (24:18):
You are listening to Giants Extra Point on the w
f A N Giants Radio network.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Jamis Winsai at the podium, let's join him downstairs.
Speaker 9 (24:27):
Yeah, kaff is very poised, uh, and he played the
quarterback position, you know, and he saw great fight into
in our team. We fall hard, you know, we fall
to the end. It was unfortunate that that we finished
the way that we did.
Speaker 18 (24:40):
Man.
Speaker 9 (24:41):
That's why I just I really wanted to win this game,
and I'm just gonna keep keep getting better.
Speaker 19 (24:47):
Man.
Speaker 9 (24:47):
But kaf is a great coach. Man. He brought great
energy and it's tough that we didn't pull it out
that energy and Kafka talked about aggressive mentality name only.
Speaker 12 (25:00):
Notice under his version.
Speaker 9 (25:02):
Yeah, man, I think this team wants it. You know,
we're right there close in these games. Man. But when
you gotta got a leader that's that's that's optimistic that
has drive, you know, and has that player perspective. You know,
he's probably been in our situation before. So I'm just
grateful to have a head ball coach who brings that optimism,
(25:23):
brings the energy in leadership.
Speaker 12 (25:25):
What do you think the key is to being able
to win some of these.
Speaker 9 (25:27):
Close games in the pot simplicity to me finishing out
like as a team, you know, all of us collectively
can do one small thing to continue to get better,
to finish this game, you know, and I think that's
the important thing. We're right there at the end of it.
We just have to finish the game, and we will.
We will find a way to finish because it's required.
(25:49):
It's required to finish in this in this league.
Speaker 12 (25:51):
What did you see on that last intersection with even
high what happened on that?
Speaker 9 (25:56):
Yeah? I believe time and execution is so important, you
know when when you in crucial moments when defensive see
routes like you and receiver have to be elite in
time and execution. And I believe Jalen and our time
and execution could have been a lot better.
Speaker 20 (26:13):
And talked about just being aggressive. He liked how you
were being aggressive. I know that's your style, but just
did you get the sense that he was encouraging you
guys to take more chances and just put it.
Speaker 12 (26:21):
All out there.
Speaker 9 (26:22):
You know? It started with the offensive line. Man, They
just played amazing against an amazing front. They played incredible.
And when you have an office line and that's dominating
up front and you're efficient in the run game, you
can be more aggressive. You can challenge their dbs a
little bit more. But Man, our running backs in our
offensive line really controlled this game for us. And uh
and that was the key to allow us to be
(26:44):
more aggressive.
Speaker 11 (26:45):
Your clip of.
Speaker 12 (26:45):
Singing Hamilton went viral.
Speaker 10 (26:47):
Did you hear from anybody?
Speaker 9 (26:49):
I didn't hear from anybody, you know. Uh. Uh. That's
the joy that I bring to the locker room, you know. Uh.
And we would have so much joy uh celebrating a victory,
you know. So, so that's what that's what we're striving for.
That's what I'm striving for. Man, I can sing Hamilton,
you know, I sing with my boys all the time,
but I would rather sing the victory song with my teammates.
Speaker 20 (27:11):
Asaid obviously comes down on Thursday. You know, he's been
in this office before me.
Speaker 12 (27:15):
He just comes in. He found him a lot today.
What was what made him so effective today?
Speaker 9 (27:20):
I mean, heal with the work he put in, you know.
And I think when when you got a guy that
you're just like, oh my goodness, Like he got in
the day of the game and he's going out there
and playing like he just put in a lot of
work in his preparation and he was prepared for it.
So I'm grateful that he came in with the attitude
that he came in with. Obviously, our coaches had a
lot of confidence in him, and he went out there
(27:41):
and did a great job for us.
Speaker 11 (27:44):
Jamis, what was your your your mentality? You know, first
couple months of the season, you know, waiting for your chance.
Speaker 9 (27:50):
And I wasn't waiting. I was preparing, doing the same
thing every single day, staying locked in, serving as as
much as I can to my teammates. Same thing I
believe in. Uh, I believe in uh. You know, preparation
is the key, you know, precious for the unprepared. So
I just try to continue to prepare. Like I am
(28:12):
the starting quarterback, and I'm grateful that I had this
this moment. It's just so unfortunate that we didn't finish.
Maybe'll thank you, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
That's Jamis Winston at the podiumar Player Press conferences are
brought to you by met Life, the official insurance company
of the New York Giants.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
Take it you can go first, Yeah, Kafka Winston, take
your back.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Look, I'll start with Jamis because he just got off
the mic there, and you know, he talked about the
past that we dissected when we first started this post game,
and they're not going to call out their teammate. They're
not going to call out Mike Kafka is not going
to call out his player. But when he looks at this,
it's going to be obvious what happened. Jalen Hyde stopped
on the ball, stopped on the play, and he's right,
(28:57):
and Ben Jamis is right.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
It's time on task. It's creating and.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
Expressing fully what the expectation is for a pass catcher
in this offense, especially with Jamis at quarterback. Jamis is
going to stand in the pocket. That's why he gave
so many, so much kudos to the offensive line. He
never felt like he was really under pressure except for
the one fourth down they turned it over on downs
and the tight and the tight red area, and that's
because nobody got open so he tried to extend it
(29:25):
and there was just nowhere to go for him to escape.
But time on task is so important, and it takes precision,
it takes detail, and if the players aren't willing to
put in that work to know exactly what you're going
to do, exactly what's expected of you, bad things are
going to happen like that. Interception and it's frustrating obviously,
but Jalen Hyde hasn't played really much at all. Part
(29:47):
of that is probably because he's earned his ability is
his time on the bench, and Jamis Winston this is
his first game playing for the New York Giants. And
will those things get corrected? Yeah, probably, I hope. So otherwise,
what's the point of having Jalen hygd On on this roster.
He's a really good athlete, we know that, but good
athletes don't make great football players all the time.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
You got to have a high football IQ and he
doesn't have that right now, right.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
I mean, there's a difference between a great player in
college and not a great player in the pros. There's
a long list of dudes that were drafted high that
it doesn't translate. I mean, it's a whole different sport.
I agree that, but from the hash marks to you know,
but listen, a lot of guys rack up college stats
playing against guys who will never even be invited to
(30:32):
an NFL camp. Right when you get into an NFL camp,
there's only ninety of them times thirty two. Think of
all the people that play football on the collegiate level
that given year that are eligible to come out. So look,
I think we've seen you know people, why don't they
put him out there?
Speaker 6 (30:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
Jamis did a good job of not really giving an answer. Right,
he's talking about timing in chemistry and all those other things.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Well as the quarterback. You never want to point in
your finger.
Speaker 19 (30:58):
At some.
Speaker 9 (31:01):
So it is what it is.
Speaker 6 (31:02):
Kafka gave his press conference.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
You know, I I don't think there's a lot of
Giants fans are gonna agree with him about how hard
the defense played.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
I mean, I think there's still.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
It's one thing to play hard, it's another to play
smart and effectively. That's what's that's what's not getting said,
is that they're they're not playing smart. And this is
this is from a coordinating standpoint and an execution standpoint.
This team is built to get after the quarterback. I
remember in the in the preseason, it was all about
the front seven, the defensive pass rush, the linebacking corps.
(31:34):
Now it's been compromised a little bit because Mike McFadden's
down and Bobby okaia Kale's face that he's getting he's
just getting older. He's not as effective as he used
to be. But you have to get after the quarterback.
And sometimes these players aren't put in positions to make
the plays that they're they want to do. Like Javon Holland,
for instance, in Miami, he was always around the ball.
He was a get after the quarterback type of safety.
(31:56):
Get in the box, be aggressive, bring somebody that no
one's expecting. You don't see blitzes from this team. And
as a result, Jordan Love on that play that we
were talking about, the thirty eight yr reception over over
a Cordel flot, he had all the time.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
In the world.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
They sent five guys though five sometimes not enough. Sometimes
five is not enough, sometimes six. But but this is
what I went on that show, This is what I
was talking about with with Abdul Carter. Aubdul Carter has
become a one trick pony. He's got to learn how
to evolve his pass rush game. But when you know
that the only blitz the Giants are going to bring
are the only pressure the Giants are going to bring
is putting a man over the center that forces one
(32:35):
on one, you get used to it, right, you know what,
you know it's coming, you know when to sink and
you know, not to expect games and you're just gonna
get a one on one rush with each of these
guys and if you if you win, your quarterback is
going to win.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
And then it clearly the Packers weren't weren't weren't flustered
by that, they weren't flummocks, they weren't like, oh god,
what are we doing. I gotta think they just have
to play the game at a higher level, and they're
not doing it right now.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Yeah, I mean, and I think it gets back to
the other point, Tike that you you touched upon at
the beginning, and it's a common refrain, you know, I
think it's just big spots. They're not good enough. Yeah right,
I mean, lots of good player. Banks has proven to
be so far, not very effective.
Speaker 9 (33:18):
Right.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Corey Black is a rookie sixth round pick. I mean,
how many rookie sixth round picks do you expect to
come in and have to play frontline snaps? But he
does because the guy you drafted in the first round
just you can't get through to him. Look, I mean,
people are gonna point to the scheme, people are gonna
point to some of that, but you know.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
At some point.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
You guys got to make plays. Yeah, and I'm not
absolving that's how you win tight games.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Yeah, individuals making great plays, that's how you win tight games.
Just what in twenty twenty two, That's what happened almost
every week that they won, whether it was Xavier McKinney,
Julian Love or offensively with Sake one or Daniel Jones
or whoever it may have been, somebody was making a
play in the crunch time, clutch, the clutch moments of
the game to try to win those games.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
The Giants aren't doing.
Speaker 9 (34:09):
That this year.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
And the other thing, I mean, you know, listen, you
don't you don't draw up pictures on the standings and everything.
But let's just go back at it realistically and look
at it. It just so happens by rotation of the
NFL schedule. That was a very favorable schedule that year.
And look at the quarterbacks that they beat this year.
Look at the quarterbacks that they've played. They've played Love,
(34:32):
who's considered one of the better quarterbacks in the National
Football League. They still have to play golf next week.
They played Dak Prescott, who can sling it. They played
Jaden Daniels, when he was healthy. They played Justin Herbert,
who they beat. They played against Dak Prescott, who's lightened
it up. They played against Patrick Mahomes. They're playing against
(34:54):
guys that have won a lot of games in their careers.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Yeah, but you also got to realize those guys, as
a cliche goes, still put their pants on one leg
at a time.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
You can make plays and make them non heroes. Alright,
I'm gonna Giants aren't good enough to do that yet.
I'm gonna give you two stats, Ticky. One, the Giants
did blizz going to a PFF's initial.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Number, blitz is just an extra extra rusher.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
I'm getting there forty five percent of the time today,
which is the fifth highest in the league so far
this week and the week's early though that could change.
But on the season, I looked up to see what
percentage of the time they're sending five man rushes of
their of their blitzes, second highest in the league. Seventy
five percent of their blitzes have been five man rush.
But John, you weren't listening to me. It's the same blitz.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Oh no, no, no, TICKI, it's not, and it's not
it's not even a blitz by all it is, it's
a it's a five man rush, it's not.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
It's not a blitz. Is bringing a.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Scheme that is catching to me, catching a defense off
guard right, coming unblocked right.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
Like last week CJ. Gardner Johnson, the Giants had no
idea he was coming on.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
And my second pot was in your favor.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
I'm saying that backs up your point, that second one,
that it's only a five man rushing.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
You're right, maybe it's not coming from.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
A place that you don't expecting the it's just you
can't be predictable in the NFL, and when you when
you've gotten it's almost like they've run out of ideas
defensively on how to get pressure. To Bob's point, on
the good quarterbacks that you're playing at the at the
at first eleven weeks of the season, you have to
confuse them, you have to make them think, and it
feels like it's the basics over and over, non smart
(36:21):
game planning, non smart action on the field, and it
ultimately loads leads to losses.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
I'm not saying they're terrible, because this isn't a terrible
Giants team. These games are close.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
All these games are one score games compared to the
last year, but still you have to go the extra step,
and they're not going the extra step. And that's what
drives you crazy when you really dig in and evaluate
this team, is that the extra step is necessary because
in certain places you're not good enough.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
And to your point, that they've sort by times they've
blitzed a cornerback and it's all the way down to
like one percent blitz towards the bottom of the league.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
So to your point, maybe you get a little more
creative where you're sending.
Speaker 1 (37:00):
That extra prember Land flying in there, and Drew Phillips
has showed in the past that he's been a pretty
good blitzer off out of the slot too, So maybe
that's some of the stuff you can start to mix
in a little bit.
Speaker 6 (37:10):
Oh god, John, we're eleven games in.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Wait, what do we wait?
Speaker 1 (37:15):
One hundred percent, no question about in the argument. Giants
Football is brought to you by Verizon, the official five
G Network of the New York Giants, Verizon American most
reliable network. Time out, We'll come back. Continue to break
down the game right here for MetLife Stadium. Giants fall
to the Packers twenty seven to twenty.
Speaker 7 (37:30):
You're listening to Giants extra Point on the w FAN
Giants Radio Network.
Speaker 21 (37:36):
This is Devin Singletary and you're listening to Giants Football
on the Fan w f AN and w FA n FM,
New York.
Speaker 6 (37:47):
Checking and Gold five.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
Winston was shotgun sat hand off, Singletary cuts to its
light for.
Speaker 8 (37:54):
The goal line touch down times Devin Singletary in a
five yard run and on the driver the game, the
Giants strike first full house backfield behind Winston.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
Wentze takes to snaphand off left for Singletary into.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
The end zone. Touchdown Giants.
Speaker 8 (38:13):
They've powered it in behind Pellacher and we're one eleven
ago and a half. The Giants are tied it to
thirteen for the extra point pendict.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Two Devin Singletary touchdowns the first two scores of.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
The game for Big Blue.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
Those were Today's plays of the game, brought to you
by your local Ford stores for Prale. Salutes those who serve.
We're back here on Giants extra Point. Giants fall to
the Green Bay Packers twenty seven to twenty. John schmulta
tiki barber, and Bob Poppa with us right here at
MetLife Stadium, and so guys, I mean, this is a
(38:48):
loaded question you probably would answer for me, But what's
the what do you do here? I mean, we've seen
the same script play out every week. Every week they
were minus one and turnover a you again, by the way,
same thing as you were last week.
Speaker 9 (39:01):
You have.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Oh MIAs two.
Speaker 6 (39:04):
Yeah, well, because the last players ruled a f a
sack and a fumble.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Good point, Sorry about that.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
So and the bottom line here is that we've gone
through the same script every week. And to Bob's point
in the previous segment, eleven we plut eleven games here,
all right, Yeah, what do we do?
Speaker 2 (39:23):
It's just who this team is.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
It's it's figuring out how to win games, and and
they're tight in the NFL, and it's hard to win
in this league, especially against the better teams upper upper tier,
even though the Packers are kind of barely in that
upper tier with how they played this year. But it's
hard to win games against the upper tier in this league.
And you've got to be exceptional and you need your
the guys. You count on the stars so to speak,
(39:46):
to make important, big plays in moments that matter, and
they're not. You're not getting enough of that, especially on
the defensive side of the ball. And we'll go back
to this offense.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Jamis is, we know who he is. He's not an
elite superstar quarterback, but he is going to.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Give you a chance because he's not afraid to make
the throw and he trust his guys to run the
right routes. And and and and they played a decent
game offensively, and she she couldn't make the stop when
you need it to multiple times from the defensive side
of the ball.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
I mean, Bob, the Giants actually outgained the Packers by
forty yards in this game thirty six to.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Two, had more first downs that they had they one
time of possession thirty five fifty six to twenty four
h four.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
I mean, they had those two drives that were nine
minutes and one was seven minutes.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
Jians seven to fourteen on third downs, Packers are seven
to eleven.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
I mean the Giants out gained by forty yards in
this games. Listen, listen.
Speaker 6 (40:37):
I know, but Jameis didn't.
Speaker 4 (40:38):
I mean, I'm not blaming this on James, but Jamis
didn't pull the trigger on fourth and three at the
ten when he had Wandel Robinson quickly on the cross
he held it. That's the difference bet you're winning and losing.
That keeps the drive alive, right, and.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
He was looking at the pressure on that even though
those guys did pick up.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
A rock the politics initially, you know, I mean, no, listen,
Isaiah Hodgens dropped the ball to ten yard line on
that last drive.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Right before the two minute war.
Speaker 6 (41:01):
I'm not blaming him.
Speaker 4 (41:03):
I'm saying that they just don't make enough plays collectively
flat miss times his jump, he could knock the ball down,
you know, flots, maybe save the game against Philadelphia on
that Thursday night. You know, so he had that interception
against Jalen Hurts in the red zone. But they don't
make enough winning plays consistently as a group.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Maybe if you get Thibodeaux back by some of the
wrinkles that you threw in, you got an opportunity. I'm
worried about a debo because he was supposed to play,
felt discomfort in his knee scratch from the game late,
so that makes me think he ain't gonna be available
next week. Your best chance to win is with Jackson Dart.
But it's hard, it's just and defensively, I don't know,
(41:46):
I how are you gonna make some of these guys
play better?
Speaker 9 (41:51):
I think you have.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
I mean, I think I think this is where you
evolve as a defense. And it's it.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
Look, we're eleven games in already, so what more can
you change? But you gotta try something different. You've got
to be more aggressive in certain spots in order to
force an opposing offense to be to execute. And when
you allow them to just execute on their own time frame,
there's no pressure in the quarterback's face, then it's I
won't say it's easy, because it's not. It's never an
(42:17):
easy sport, but for good quarterbacks, it becomes easy when
you're not pressured.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
It feels easy from a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (42:22):
Well, and it's it's also being disciplined, right, I mean,
we talked about it, John. How many times did Abdul
Carter make that move to the inside and they knew
it and they just ran right at it? Or he
makes that move to the inside and maybe in college
against Wisconsin he wins every single time and it's disruptive,
But in the NFL it doesn't.
Speaker 9 (42:40):
Work that way.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Down to shade at the Badgers.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
Pict u CLA, how about they're a bad team Okay,
so U CLA, sorry, Christine, believe you. But but then
it compromises your rush integrity. Right, So how many times
do we see love just be able to bail to
that side because there was no one to quote unquote
set the.
Speaker 6 (43:02):
Rudg ash right the edge rush.
Speaker 4 (43:05):
So it's I don't know, it's until you as a staff,
and this now falls with Mike Kafka, and he holds
his defensive coaches and his coordinator count if you guys
are gonna keep making these same mistakes, well, then I
have to make more changes. I mean, and I'm not
saying he's got to get rid of people.
Speaker 11 (43:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
The challenge for me because everybody called our show this
week and was complaining mostly about Chaine Bowen. If Dave's
has gone, whis and Chaine Bowen gone, And my point
was to them was who you're replacing him with, who's
taking over the defensive play calling, and who's going to
do it differently or or more aggressive? He talked about
being aggressive Kafka did regarding the offense. I think he
(43:45):
also needs to put an emphasis on making the defense
more aggressive.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
He said that in the presser. He did, but we
didn't see it. You know what't we haven't seen this
defense be extra aggressive.
Speaker 11 (43:56):
You know.
Speaker 3 (43:56):
One of the things when you look at say Vance
Joseph Out in Denver, or he's aggressed historically at Brian
Floores in Minnesota. I think back to the days in
Philadelphia with that defense. It was so aggressive. They'd get
up the one of scrimmins and I'd be like, who
the hell are we supposed to block here? Jim Johnson's
Jim Johnson. Absolutely, you didn't know who was coming. You
didn't know. It flummels you. You're you're at the point
(44:17):
of attack, you know, the balls getting ready to snap,
and you're confused. You're not confused when you see what
the Giants bring for you defensively and then at the
same time they're also not making the plays.
Speaker 6 (44:27):
Yeah, I mean, I think that's a fair point.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
I think that speaks to what a lot of the
you know, fans out there they've kind of said it
just it seems very vanilla.
Speaker 6 (44:36):
And again, I was talking with.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
A successful head coach and defensive coordinator last week in
Chicago who's retired now, and he I asked him what
he thought, what do you see with the Giants defense?
He goes well, I see a whole bunch of talent
up front. I see some talented players. He goes, it's
kind of basic. It's they don't do a whole lot
that would say exotic. And I think when you're going
(45:02):
against Love and Mahomes and Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert
and run through the list of quarterbacks and coordinators that
you're going against, they see that, and it's on film
for ten, now eleven weeks. They're gonna have a pretty
good play going into the game, and I'm not. And listen,
maybe part of the reason why it's not uber creative
(45:22):
is because they have no faith right in anybody if they.
Speaker 6 (45:27):
I mean, look at the touchdown run that they had
right up the middle. I mean that was just pure
man on man.
Speaker 4 (45:34):
We're gonna run it in from eleven yards out right
up the middle of your defense, and the guy almost
went in one.
Speaker 1 (45:39):
And when you can't stop the run, it's hard to
be super exotic and creative when you know the other
team in third and.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
A long a lot right correct.
Speaker 4 (45:45):
And remember Jacobs was what was the average in six
yards of six points six yards of carry when he
hurt his knee and then it can't come back in
the game. Yeah, I mean, I mean, good luck Jamiir
Gibson David Montgomery.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Next week and their passing game, that run game is dominant,
and we know it's coming. We know it's coming next week.
Speaker 4 (46:03):
And the problem is that Giants don't have enough weapons
on the offensive side of the ball to get into
a shootout and say, Okay, we're gonna play one of
these Arena Football League games. It's gonna be forty five,
forty two and hopefully we have the ball last. Because
you're you have just you have right now. You have
a lot of try hard guys at your receiver position,
but you don't have anybody that's gonna really scare you. Obviously,
(46:26):
losing neighbors is huge, but behind that, you know, it's just.
Speaker 6 (46:31):
Guys that play solid and play hard, right.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
But I do give Kafka credit for creating a mentality
that we are going to be aggressive. I mean, how
many fourth downs did they go for in this game?
And you didn't You weren't even questioning it. I know
you have listened to the broadcast. You knew they were
going forward on fourth down, and they were running the
ball on third and short sometimes because if they don't
get it, they're gonna they're going forward on fourth down.
(46:54):
And that's a mentality that needs to permeate this team
because you're you're almost good enough, not quite good enough,
So now you have to scheme success.
Speaker 1 (47:04):
Hey, guys, we have aut dual quarter. He spoke after
the game downstairs. There were some questions as to why
he didn't play in that first drive. I'm sure he's
gonna be asked about that. Let's see what aubdual quarter
I have to say after the game.
Speaker 9 (47:13):
That was a consequence.
Speaker 11 (47:14):
I've lived with it.
Speaker 9 (47:15):
Keep playing.
Speaker 14 (47:16):
When you look at the fourth order, it's not the
same situation with that a big lead, you guys get away,
but at one point lead then it gets away again.
Speaker 9 (47:23):
What's the uh?
Speaker 11 (47:25):
What's that much like there?
Speaker 14 (47:27):
Yeah, we got to make that big play. That's the
point in the game where our best players gotta step up.
I gotta step up and make that big play, and
we didn't today.
Speaker 11 (47:35):
What's happening up front of you?
Speaker 17 (47:37):
Guys are not able to consistently get the pressure in.
Speaker 12 (47:39):
Some of the sacks.
Speaker 17 (47:40):
To me, why what do you think from your perspective
is happening? You guys aren't able to get home.
Speaker 14 (47:45):
I mean, I couldn't tell you exactly my lot from
Childers what I do, and I know that I know
situation that I gotta make that play so a.
Speaker 22 (47:53):
Though I know you're on the defensive side of the ball,
but any kind of different vibe at all the sideline
now that you have a new head coach, actually get on.
Speaker 12 (48:01):
Running the bench.
Speaker 11 (48:02):
We're trying not to focus on that too much.
Speaker 10 (48:04):
I feel like, you know, Catholic came in is doing
a good job.
Speaker 16 (48:07):
At least had to focus on the game I had.
Speaker 17 (48:10):
It seems like you guys were able to start getting
a little bit of pressure and the end of the
first half and you dexta a couple of quarterback hits.
You know, Burns got a sacked. You talk about maybe
just you know what you guys are trying to do
like and a half to kind of get your pressure
a little bit.
Speaker 14 (48:21):
Yeah, we got to finish the game like that the
same way we got pressure, we got sacks at the
end of the half.
Speaker 11 (48:25):
We got to do that at the end of the game.
Speaker 10 (48:27):
We didn't today.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
We missed the very beginning of that.
Speaker 1 (48:30):
Apparently, abdulccarter was asked about why he sat for that
first drive.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
He said it was a mistake he made during the week.
Speaker 1 (48:36):
He would not get further into it, but he understands
that his decisions half consequence.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
Absolutely, And look, he's taken accountability, at least rhetorically, and
so you give him, you give him credit for being
a stand up guy. But at the same time, as
a rookie, you're learning how to be a pro. And
it's it's everything. It's not just what you do on
game day. It's how you prepare. It's the example that
you set for everybody else that's counting on you on
(49:00):
every game day. And I'm glad he took responsibility for that,
even if we don't know the exact details of what
went on.
Speaker 2 (49:08):
Absolute right, let's take a time out. We'll come back.

Packers twenty seven to twenty Dexter Lawrence spoke after the game,
let's listen, it.
Speaker 16 (50:07):
Just not making the plays that that comes to us.
Speaker 18 (50:09):
We just gotta make those texts with Mike Kaftan, like
on the sideline when you're around there, what did.
Speaker 10 (50:15):
You say from his old leaderships.
Speaker 16 (50:19):
Encouraging, you know, challenging leaders to you know, go make
the play that needs to be made.
Speaker 11 (50:24):
And I think that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 16 (50:27):
We just gotta make those plays that you know that
that's that that's our place.
Speaker 18 (50:33):
You obviously made a statement by sitting that door for
the first drive did the players have to say anything
of anything to him?
Speaker 17 (50:39):
No, can you appreciate that an inter rem coach, but
that you know, uh, show that level of accountability.
Speaker 10 (50:47):
Sitting one of his best players for the for the
first draft.
Speaker 16 (50:51):
I mean, that's that's just how it goes sometimes, man,
Like I don't think it's who the coach is or
who the coach is, and that's.
Speaker 13 (51:00):
Just did you did you as a captain build I
need to say anything or anything like that too.
Speaker 10 (51:08):
About that sitting the first series. It seems like I
might have been disciplinarian.
Speaker 16 (51:13):
Just just go make the plays that come to you, man,
and be the start that you are.
Speaker 2 (51:17):
That's it, dicky reaction. I mean, what else can you say?
Speaker 3 (51:23):
I mean, I think he's gonna get coached up from
some of the he needs to get coached up from
some of the vets. And I'll keep going back to this.
You just you just don't fully know as a rookie
what you what it's expected of you. And h this
isn't college where you kind of just show up and
go be a baller and be better than everybody else.
Speaker 2 (51:43):
It's it's it's a it's a pro.
Speaker 3 (51:45):
Game, it's a it's a professional east Or guys, this
is their living and if you're not good enough at
it and you're not supporting your team enough, then people
fail and that cost people their jobs. And I don't
know if enough of these guys realize that in real time,
but it's ultimately the consequence, because this game will kick
you out really quickly if you're not doing the right things.
And I don't think that's gonna be the case without
(52:06):
dul Carter. I think he's a hell of a player.
I think he's got a ton of potential, but as
we all know, potential is a dirty word when it's
not realized.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
And h he's got He'll learn.
Speaker 9 (52:16):
That for sure.
Speaker 1 (52:17):
Bob, give me your final thoughts here either on this game.
We're looking ahead to Detroit in Detroit next week. Two
can second road games coming up with the Giants at
Detroit next week, then Monday Night in New England the
week after that.
Speaker 6 (52:27):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know what to say here.
Speaker 2 (52:29):
The run.
Speaker 4 (52:29):
Stopping the run is a big issue for this football team.
It's not getting any better. I did like the fact
that they started with a four man front on that
first drive right to try to make sure that they
couldn't get the run game going, but they.
Speaker 9 (52:40):
Were able to.
Speaker 4 (52:42):
We just keep talking about guys having to play better
and we got to clean it up. And your dexter
Laurence say, you know, we got to just make the
plays when they come to us. But then not making
the plays, did not making the plays? You know to
me that flot play. Uh, look, he's had a nice year,
but like you gotta knock that ball down, right, you
have to find a way to break up that pass.
Speaker 2 (53:02):
You know, you always say rookies, they don't know Steven Williams,
you know what he is. Yeah, he's a rookie.
Speaker 3 (53:06):
He's a rookie, right, Yeah, But it becomes a team
and a culture around the team, and you see that
with this this Packer squads. Why mich Lafleur is such
a good coach because you feel the expectation. Guys are
expecting it. And Romeo Dobbs, one of their better wide receivers,
had a rough day to day. I mean at least
three drops, maybe maybe more than he had, but everybody
(53:27):
around them picked picked him up because they did make
those plays in critical moments.
Speaker 4 (53:33):
Yeah, I mean, Christian Watson, I mean it's a contested
ball in the end zone. Deontay Banks is right there,
the ball is in his hands. He never even is
able to bring it to his body.
Speaker 9 (53:43):
He goes to the.
Speaker 6 (53:44):
Ground holding it like a sandwich.
Speaker 4 (53:46):
You, as a player in the NFL, as a first
round pick, as a starting player in the NFL, need
to be able to rip that ball out of his
hands before he ever even gets it to his body
and goes to the ground. You know, Watson makes to play.
The Giants didn't make the play. And then in the
end zone, he didn't almost just catch it when he
(54:07):
hit the ground, he secured it for the go ahead
touchdown in the game, and they they don't have enough
players that make winning plays, unfortunately. And again on the
offensive side of the ball, I feel like they try hard.
I think they try on defense, but the Tiki's point,
they don't do anything disruptive defensively. I feel like the
(54:28):
offense is a little engine that could. Hey, we're gonna
sign Isaiah Hodgins. He's gonna play almost every snap. We
got something out of little Jordan Humphrey earlier this year.
Singletary is an older player, but he's trying. They're trying,
They're trying they're trying. The offensive line is fighting defensively,
you know, like you know Dexter said, you know, he's
got to play like the star he is. Well, in
(54:49):
what universe is he a star? This is other than
he was drafted in the first round and high. But
you are what you are in the league, not what
you once were in college. Because Danny Warful won a
Heisman Trophy and couldn't play quarterback in the NFL, like,
it's a whole different thing.
Speaker 6 (55:05):
You've got to prove it again.
Speaker 4 (55:07):
And right now they have enough guys that are just
not making winning plays, especially defensively when.
Speaker 9 (55:12):
They have to.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
Bob was Helti next week. Hello, I appreciate you. Bob.

Speaker 1 (56:46):
The Giants fall to the Packers twenty seven to twenty
Devin Singletary talked to the media after the game.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
He had two touchdowns for the Giants today.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
Let's listen into motor one of the Giants veterans on
the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 21 (56:57):
Here's trying to get your thought signs from coach Mike
Kaka and how we handled the entire bench as well
as the offer us today.
Speaker 11 (57:03):
Yeah, man, I think you did a great job. You uh,
you know, but we expect you that.
Speaker 16 (57:07):
They expect that.
Speaker 11 (57:09):
What kind of field might have been different with with
the change.
Speaker 21 (57:14):
You know, it was more more even killed other than
a lot of no matter what was going on, everybody
was even killed.
Speaker 11 (57:20):
No, I think that the biggest difference thing.
Speaker 22 (57:21):
It look like you guys were really able to start
run against the team that doesn't get much too much
on the ground.
Speaker 11 (57:27):
How proud of you guys are of that? From very
proud man.
Speaker 21 (57:31):
The big guys on the front, you know what I'm saying,
they were They was moving guys, you know, wanta seeing.
But you know we expected that. We we knew they
was capable of that, and uh me and Trace all
we had to do his run. Even the receivers got
in on it and the tight end got in on
all the dirty work.
Speaker 11 (57:44):
So that was big for us.
Speaker 19 (57:45):
Today.
Speaker 22 (57:46):
You get the go ahead touchdown there early in the
fourth quarter, and the game unfortunately had slipped away.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
What goes through your mind in the stomach gets you
see the champion game?
Speaker 16 (57:54):
Yeah, man, sick.
Speaker 11 (57:55):
It's a sick feeling.
Speaker 16 (57:57):
That's never a good feeling, especially when you know, I.
Speaker 21 (57:59):
Mean, you know, I'm saying we had a good chance
that winning anything, but you know, we all, we all
was sick about that one.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
And then Flanner Jameis Winston, did you know obviously fourth quarter,
you guys get the lead again.
Speaker 22 (58:09):
Credit to him for a guy who hadn't played all season.
Speaker 21 (58:11):
Yeah, man, man, Jabel, great man. You know, he brings
it every day. He's been the same guy since he
walked in and did it all us. We just tried
our best to rally behinda, you know, and he gave.
Speaker 16 (58:23):
Us a chance to win.
Speaker 1 (58:25):
We're joined by Paul Detino, who conduct that interview with
Devin Singletary. Paul, uh, different coach, same game. Was it
the same feeling in the locker room after the game
as well? It wasn't a little bit.
Speaker 22 (58:36):
Different, No, I thought it was a little bit different, John,
to be honest with you, certainly disappointments, certainly frustration. As
I talked, I got to talked about half a dozen guys,
and the theme was pretty simple.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
We made a lot of plays today.
Speaker 22 (58:51):
We certainly did some better things on offense, competitive once
again on defense, and then just did not make enough
plays at the end. Brian Burns in particular, you'll hear
from him later on in the show that that's the
one where he talks specifically about how they did not
win three one on one matchups during the key third
(59:13):
down winning Packers touchdown drive, and he said, point blank
that's it right there, that one play, we take care
of that. All we gotta do three one on ones.
One guy win one day.
Speaker 1 (59:27):
Flot one, you had the touchdown, What was the what
was the third one on one he was talking about
just out of curiosity.
Speaker 3 (59:31):
No, No, he's talking and talking about all on one play. Yes,
he's talking about the flat. He's talking about getting home
with whether it's.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
The all in that same one play, I got the
same place.
Speaker 22 (59:40):
Many guys single up, correct, and he says, all we
got to do is one of these guys of our
guys got to win a one on one.
Speaker 2 (59:46):
And he's like, so we're making plays, We're not making
enough plays.
Speaker 22 (59:50):
That was his take and and I and I got
the sense throughout the locker room offensively and defensively, And
this is probably what you really want to know, John.
The common thread in talking about Mike Kafka was his poise,
his calmness, very encouraging on the sidelines. And I got
(01:00:10):
the impression that everybody thought it was a positive experience.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
And he was positive in his press conference as well.
Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
One of his teammates on defense, Javon Hollin's book after
the game as well.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
Let's listening to him not in a kick.
Speaker 11 (01:00:20):
You just made a good play?
Speaker 19 (01:00:21):
Yeah, yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:00:22):
Did you get with an illegal pick on adown they had.
Speaker 18 (01:00:25):
On the right name, Yeah yeah, I believe I was
within one yard of the line of scrimmage, so it
was a good play.
Speaker 9 (01:00:31):
By then, So what are you supposed to do then?
Speaker 10 (01:00:33):
Ascually sag off so it doesn't have him within one year? Like,
what's the solution for you in that situation?
Speaker 11 (01:00:38):
Yeah, I mean, just don't be within one yard.
Speaker 10 (01:00:42):
Let me catch that Watson made out there. You and Cary,
we're back out there what you see on that play
out there.
Speaker 11 (01:00:48):
I just made a good question in the corner. You
did a good job.
Speaker 4 (01:00:52):
Is there anything you could pinpoint and blind you guys
have been able to make the big play at the
end of games?
Speaker 11 (01:00:57):
That's not really a question for me. It's probably a
question for our coaches.
Speaker 9 (01:01:02):
Is there anything you can do as sort of like
a leader to sort of help that.
Speaker 11 (01:01:07):
Other than my job? I'm not necessarily sure, but you know,
make the player that comes to me. But uh, as
a leader or one of.
Speaker 18 (01:01:17):
The eleven individuals on the field, Like, my job is
to do my job and then you know that'll lead
to success.
Speaker 10 (01:01:22):
So you know, just figuring it out. But that's definitely
a question for you know, somebody so many things?
Speaker 9 (01:01:28):
Did you? Is that what you've preached everyone else? Just
do your job, like worry about you.
Speaker 10 (01:01:31):
Yeah, actually, men and everything else sort of take care
of it. Stuff that everyone can do in their job, right.
Speaker 11 (01:01:34):
Yeah, everyone does their job.
Speaker 18 (01:01:36):
If all eleven people do their job and diresuccessful in
their job, then they'll end up coming.
Speaker 9 (01:01:39):
Out and being successful.
Speaker 19 (01:01:41):
What was your sense when it was twenty or nineteen,
You guys go on the field, you finally take the lead.
Speaker 11 (01:01:45):
You defense has been in that situation before.
Speaker 16 (01:01:48):
Was there a good level of confidence or the word
to stop and he'll lead to a win here?
Speaker 9 (01:01:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:01:53):
Absolutely.
Speaker 18 (01:01:53):
I mean what happened before has nothing to do with
what happens now, cause I I really can't control any
even happens before. So yeah, absolute, We're going to go
out there and make a stop. And they made two
great catches. You know, I took my hat and name
those are good, two good plays. And if we go
back out there and they throw the same players, I
expect my you know, fly in Corey to make those
two plays.
Speaker 11 (01:02:11):
Like I wouldn't draw it up any differently.
Speaker 10 (01:02:12):
I trust both of those individual selves.
Speaker 12 (01:02:15):
What do you think the key is to being able
to close out some of these type finishes?
Speaker 11 (01:02:19):
I think just execute is.
Speaker 9 (01:02:22):
The only thing is execute Mike.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
That's Jamon Holland after the game. Is it as simple
as do your job? To Yeah, it is, do your job.
Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
But it also sounded like he was he was kicking
it upstairs or not upstairs to you know, to the
front office, but to the coaching staff. Often you know,
it's not my decision, it's above my pay grade. And
I get a sense and we said this earlier. I
said this earlier. When he was in Miami, he was
all he was always around the football, and you don't
see that much with this defense. He's not in a
(01:02:51):
blitz position. He's not in a place to impact the
ball or the play call defensive play calls in the box.
And I think he's frustrated by that. He knows what
kind of player he can be and he's not getting
the opportunity. And so when he's asked about these things,
that's why he's deferring to the coaching uh. And ultimately
there's a reckoning that it's gonna ultimately happen on the
(01:03:11):
defensive side of this ball.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
I don't know what that looks like.
Speaker 3 (01:03:14):
If it's in the short term, clearly it's gonna be
in the long term because of the disappointment pointing ways
that this Giants team has lost games. But it comes
back to what everybody's been talking about, why isn't Shane
Bowen being more aggressive? And I think this defense is
pining for that in so many different ways, and you're
just not getting it week in and week out.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
All Right, let's take some calls eight eight EIGHTHA eight
one zero one nine eight eight eighta eight one zero
one nine. We're gonna lead things off with John in
haz New Jersey. John, what's going on?
Speaker 11 (01:03:47):
Hey, gentlemen?
Speaker 2 (01:03:50):
Well good, it is what it is.
Speaker 23 (01:03:53):
So I gotta say, whoever the head coach of this
team winds up being, I personally think if there's one
coach retains, it's got to be Carmen Brisilla. The O line,
the improvements that they've made and measurable improvements. It's it's
you need to get the guy and sometimes you know,
the best guys in the room still. And I don't
(01:04:14):
know what's gonna happen with Kafka.
Speaker 24 (01:04:15):
I like him.
Speaker 23 (01:04:17):
We'll see with him, but there's you got to keep Priscilla.
You got to get his all line going.
Speaker 6 (01:04:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04:22):
I mean, look, the offensive line appreciates you. John played
well in this game. You heard multiple people reference that.
You heard uh Jamis talking about it. Devin Singletary was
talking about it a common theme this year course, and
it's really because of continuity. You just you've been able
to for the most part, have the same guys out there.
Say for the one game where Jermaine and Luminor was
down with the peck injury play every single week, and
(01:04:43):
you get familiar with one another, and so you can
start running different types of schemes in the run game.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
And you know, we talked about what Kafka is going
to do in this run game in the second half.
What were the keys.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
One of the keys we mentioned, John was you got
to run the ball. You got to try to control
the line of scrimmage because that's where the was. And
they put themselves in long drive situations into scoring position,
into the red zone. Because the offensive line held up
in the run game with Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary.
Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
Did a really good job of converting when you need
it to.
Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
Of course, Paul, the trick is, you have two members
of this offensive line free agents after the year, Greg
Van Roden, who knows if he wants to play next
year then he's into his mid thirties, Jermaine and Luminor
a free agent as well. You have Marcus Bowl waiting
in the wings there, and then excuse me, John Michaelischmitch
and John Runyon they're free agents the following year, right,
So there's a lot of uncertainty coming up the next
couple years of this scroup.
Speaker 22 (01:05:33):
No there's no doubt the only one right now who
I think you could really count on to compete for
a starting job as Marcus Baul. I think it's pretty
clear he is going to be a starter somewhere in
that front five at some.
Speaker 2 (01:05:45):
Point going into opening down. And they've been pretty clear
that they think of him as a tackle.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
They love him at tackle. So we'll see how the
Giants decide to handle that. Eight one zero one nine.
Let's go back to the phones and say, what's up
to Matt in Saratoon, Goo, Matt, what's going on?
Speaker 25 (01:06:02):
Hey, guys, how's it going?
Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
Thanks?
Speaker 25 (01:06:04):
Taking Nicole unfortunately driving home, driving home from yet another
disappointing loss. And I just wanted to get your guys
thought because I keep kicking this around my head. I
just don't understand I've been saying the same thing you
guys have. It's like the broken record of guys need
to make plays, make plays, make plays, but they just don't.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
I just don't.
Speaker 25 (01:06:24):
I cannot wrap my head around the fact that more
pink fingers are not being pointed at Joe Shane. You know,
they want to scapegoat stable same result here.
Speaker 9 (01:06:33):
I get it.
Speaker 25 (01:06:33):
New Week, first week, as a head coach. I'm not
saying CAF goat to turn this thing around, But I
don't understand how they're not fingers being pointed at just
the poor composition of this roster and the lack of talent,
because I don't know that a new a new coach
is a magic pill for just the growth lack of
talent on this team, especially on the defense.
Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
Yeah, I think you're right about that, especially in the secondary,
and a lot of that's because of injuries and uh,
you know, not being in the position where they are
where they're ideal at their skill set. And so it
is partly scheme, but ultimately you're playing second stringers or
guys who aren't aren't gonna make it in this league. Now,
maybe Deontay Banks thrives in a different type of scheme
(01:07:16):
when he's no longer a New York Giant, But in
this scheme, he's not physical. He doesn't make plays on
the ball. He's often right where he needs to be,
but doesn't make plays on the ball quarter flat. As
as positive as you can try to be on him,
he's a smaller corner and he and he and he
gets beat a lot and doesn't make the plays at
the point of attack.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
He's a frigaty the two exactly, so he'll be somewhere
else as well.
Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
And you know, you need stronger, bigger, faster athletes, especially
against some of these wide receivers that you see, especially
this Packer squad. Look at me, Christian Watskon is a
big dude.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
You know what I mean? Uh uh uh. Romeo Dobbs
is a big player.
Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
You got to be able to play through the ball
and make more importantly, when you make a mistake, you
gotta be able to recover.
Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
And when they make mistakes, they get burned. It's a
matter of player development though too right. I think he
liked what we saw out of Drew Phillips and Tyler,
but his rookies, and we talked about those guys taking
a jump in their second year.
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
Yeah, you have taken a step back. We have not
seen that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
Now they've they've regressed. And you know, now man Nuben
is out. He was out of this game. But he
hasn't looked the same as he did as a rookie
when he played almost every snap until he got hurt
at the end of the season. We thought he was
going to be a stal wars for the future. You
thought the Xavier McKinney exodus because of in free agency
would have been neutered in some regard because Tyler Nuben
(01:08:36):
was such a good player, but he hasn't been that
this year, And so who gets to blame?
Speaker 2 (01:08:40):
Is it the player or is it the coaching staff? Yeah?
Speaker 22 (01:08:42):
Well, Tike, I would only say this of the starting eleven.
And if you want to call Phillips part of that
because he's the nixt yeah, sure, which is fine. They're
basically how many of those guys outside of Brian Burns
is actually playing up to their capabilities?
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
I mean, I make Fadden was before he got hurt,
but now he's not on the field. That's not here, right,
So how but.
Speaker 22 (01:09:00):
How many other guys are playing to their max to
what they should be able to do?
Speaker 2 (01:09:04):
Yeah? Not enough of them, is the no. And that's
where it becomes.
Speaker 22 (01:09:08):
If it's one, two, or three guys, now you can
point fingers more different guys, right, But when a whole
host of them, when eighty percent of your starting defense
is not maxing out and actually regressing, no, that I'm
sorry to say becomes a bigger problem.
Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
It becomes systematic as opposed to individual exactly. And that's
that's where that's why there's there's been in again and
this started from the fan base, but it's it's kind
of the reality with the staff and you heard Javon
Holland talking about it.
Speaker 6 (01:09:38):
It's you know, ask the coach, ask the coach as
the coach, and.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
You're not gonna get any answers because I'm not sure
they have the answers right now.
Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
I think if they had the answers, they would have
implemented the results over the first eleven shoots of the season.
All right, let's take a time out. We'll come back.
Take more of your calls. Giants fall to the Backers
twenty seven to twenty. We'll take you until ten to six,
when that's basketball comes your way.
Speaker 15 (01:09:58):
This is Brian Burns and you listen, and it's a
Giants football on the fan w f A n and
w f A N FM, New York.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
We're back here on Giants extra point. Giants fall to
the Packers twenty seven to twenty. Brian Burns, one of
the Giants captains and leaders, talked after the game in
the locker room, was listening.
Speaker 11 (01:10:14):
We took too long. We had three one on ones
we didn't win.
Speaker 10 (01:10:18):
Can't leave the.
Speaker 15 (01:10:18):
Coverage, you know, covering that long flight with the tradition,
that's a hard time for him.
Speaker 11 (01:10:23):
We had to have a model man, So that's that's
gonna do line, in my opinion, the.
Speaker 14 (01:10:27):
Difficult to when these things can playing enough to deal
with defensively in the fourth quarter early get that.
Speaker 10 (01:10:32):
Obviously he played a lot of.
Speaker 8 (01:10:33):
Good ball today and then it still doesn't reward you know,
at the end of the day.
Speaker 15 (01:10:37):
Gotta make Copetter plays bigger plays, bigger and better plays.
We had a turnover that they took back. I mean
I had to say it's gonna do so much, but
I mean, that's that's the moment that we could have had.
Speaker 10 (01:10:48):
We also got two more punch outs that the ball
ran out of bounce.
Speaker 11 (01:10:51):
I mean the ball fell out of bounce.
Speaker 10 (01:10:52):
But uh, you know, you just gotta make bigger and
better players.
Speaker 9 (01:10:56):
Didn't pack the game all of us.
Speaker 6 (01:11:00):
Supplined for the first series. Would you see see anything
different from him when he.
Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Came in the game.
Speaker 9 (01:11:05):
Uh No, he was locked in.
Speaker 11 (01:11:07):
That's not what I expect him to be the different
as the leader on this team. Did you talk to
him at all?
Speaker 10 (01:11:12):
Yeah, would you share anything that kind of get parted
on the Winston.
Speaker 15 (01:11:15):
Wis uh not trying to not really besides the you
know regularly just you know, stay in it. You know
when you get the opportunity, when you show out, you know,
it's just continue to study if you you when you
when you're uh, when your job.
Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
What was it like with casts on the sideline to Uh?
Speaker 9 (01:11:32):
It was good?
Speaker 2 (01:11:32):
He didn't.
Speaker 15 (01:11:35):
I didn't have too much too many words of him
throughout the game, you know, just because how it is whatever,
But but uh, he was good Bryan back operation backs
doing things just for one second.
Speaker 10 (01:11:44):
How much does that for a team set?
Speaker 4 (01:11:47):
You know, when Mike as a new coach set a
sort of standard or message that there's gonna be accountability
for you know, not following the rules or.
Speaker 11 (01:11:55):
Whatever whatever it may be.
Speaker 15 (01:11:58):
Right, he's just professional, bro. Ain't really too much to
be said. It wasn't no big, no big meeting or
nothing like that. It was just you know, between him
and castor then it got handled.
Speaker 11 (01:12:10):
So but it just do that never they wand all
the times wh I got out.
Speaker 10 (01:12:14):
You might not never know, you know, things that stay
in house staying house for a reason. But we did
but we do know is you see it the repercussions.
Speaker 6 (01:12:23):
Now we're on the field, on the field in regards
to playing time, So does that speak differently?
Speaker 11 (01:12:28):
And anyway, my brother, it happened. It's over right. What
did you think.
Speaker 13 (01:12:34):
You said you didn't really hear the actor on the
sideline overall, feel any different his presence on the side, like.
Speaker 11 (01:12:40):
To feel any different?
Speaker 9 (01:12:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:12:43):
It felt good, man. I mean, he was into it.
He was all into the game.
Speaker 15 (01:12:46):
You know, he came over games, some words and encouragement,
you know, uh, gave some key piners of of how
they were attacking us.
Speaker 10 (01:12:52):
And I see those things as being able.
Speaker 11 (01:12:54):
That's a great resource.
Speaker 10 (01:12:56):
Everything was, it was.
Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
It was cool alright, talk about not making plays on
defense there, that's what Mike and Clifton Park wants to
talk about.
Speaker 2 (01:13:04):
He joins us here on the fan.
Speaker 24 (01:13:05):
Mike, Hey, guys, how how's it going?
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
All We're good.
Speaker 24 (01:13:11):
But so you know, when they drafted ab Drew Carter,
my first thought was James Bowen, please don't.
Speaker 19 (01:13:16):
Screw this up. And he screwed it up.
Speaker 24 (01:13:18):
So you know my feeling is he James Bowen doesn't
play to the strength of the defense. I do think
the defense does does play hard, but but but they're
not set up to win. They don't make winning plays.
That also goes to Shane and.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
And right there, like, yeah, my serious question, how is
Shaane Bowen? How did he not use outdal quarter the
right way today?
Speaker 24 (01:13:41):
How did he not how many sacks?
Speaker 1 (01:13:43):
Yeah, you said, shamee Bone's not putting Carter in her
positions to succeed.
Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
What did he do wrong you Carter today?
Speaker 24 (01:13:49):
Give me a break. You know I'm a lay person. Okay,
get some sacks already and make a key stop so
so and stop giving up the leaf for quin out
loud when no, that's all far Fire him. When we
get to the buy, fire him, and when we get
to when we get to offseasons, fire shape. His roster stinks,
and Bowen's not the right coach.
Speaker 8 (01:14:08):
For this team.
Speaker 19 (01:14:09):
Take care.
Speaker 24 (01:14:09):
What a dumb question, he asked?
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
Oh no, no time out, Mike. First of all, you
come and you make a statement, you can't defend it.
You're the one that sounds dumb, not me. If you
want to look at the overall quality of how things
have gone this year, that's fine. I'm not gonna argue
that they've blown a bunch of leads. They've given up
too many points. They're not winning games. That's fine.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
Don't call up make a statement and then say, oh,
I can't give that answer. I'm the lay person. Well,
then don't make the definitive statement if you don't know
what you're talking about. Fair, That's what I thought, Locky.
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
He's frustrated because Abdult Carter's not showing up in the stats.
And that's fine, of course, And again, part of that
is because Abdul Carter is a rookie and he's gotta
he's gotta evolve his game and learn how to be
a more complete pass rusher, and that'll come with time.
But he's also a rookie and he's been putting in
a position where uh in this game, particularly because Kevon
Thibodeau is out with I guess it was an armage.
I'm not exactly sure what they diagnosed or stated, but
(01:15:04):
he now got a chance to be on the edge
for the majority of this game.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
And look, he knows what he wants to do, but
so do they.
Speaker 3 (01:15:14):
Right, the offensive game plans are going to be designed
to take advantage of what he's trying to do on
a limited capacity. And look, I think he'll evolve into
a good player, of course, but right now it's got
to be frustrating. I think a lot of people expected
him to become Michael Parsons. Michael Parsons was a force
from jump Abdul Carter. It's gonna take some time.
Speaker 22 (01:15:37):
Well, that's why elite guys like Parsons, like Lawrence Taylor, Yeah,
they make an impact as rookies right out of the box.
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
But you know what, Tiki, and you know this too,
you're a rookie in this league.
Speaker 22 (01:15:48):
There are guys who are getting paid on the other
side of the lot of scrimmage, who are crafty, wiley veterans.
Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
They know how to use the tricks of the trade
to get the edge on you.
Speaker 22 (01:15:58):
And it's like, hey, kid, welcome to the NFL, and
they're going to frustrate you with a lot of tricks
of the trade that you were going to have to
learn and overcome. And that's why not every pass rusher
makes an immediate impact in this game.
Speaker 2 (01:16:13):
It's hard, it's not easy. Let's go to Richie and queens,
he's up next. What's up?
Speaker 19 (01:16:16):
Rich I got so frustrating guys, and I think the
giant things are getting crazy and I'm getting to that
point too.
Speaker 2 (01:16:23):
But Richie, it's understandable Giant fans should be upset. I
totally get that.
Speaker 19 (01:16:27):
Yeah, I mean, and you know, we could say the
same thing we say every week, and we talked about
it Saturday, John Winnaby winnable do they win a game?
Nothing's winnable because I have no faith in them at all.
And you know it was. It was wittable, right, it
was winnable. But you've got to finish the games, guys,
and they don't of course. And take you touched on Hyatt.
I refereed almost twenty five years in a semi pro
(01:16:49):
and the play like that. I knew who the defense was,
I knew who the player was, and I knew that
that player was not going to give up on it,
so I had to be more intense. Hyatt, like you said,
is playing himself at the league. It looks like it's Winston.
It was definitely higher. And you know the other thing
that gods me again at the end of the game.
They were supposed to be an elite, elite defense, and
(01:17:10):
I know this guy's missing, the saying Tiberdau's missing, Well,
everybody's in doesn't make a difference. I know the secondary
is hurt, but you know what, at that particular time
when Kafka said, it's more than just the end of
the game, No, it's not. You're down five. In baseball,
you give you give the close of the game to
close out just one time. They never make a stop,
(01:17:30):
whether it's a corner blitz, whether it's a full blitz,
empty backfield, whatever. It's so frustrating towards and I think
we've talked about I know we've talked about Carter, but
when your physical specimen like he was supposed to be
by accident, you got to be one on one. You
don't have to read a playbook. You know, it's not
like a quarterboy. It's not like running routes. But once
(01:17:53):
in a while, you got to come up big and
they don't.
Speaker 3 (01:17:56):
Yeah, you got to win those moments. And I've talked
about this all season long. All of these players, at
least a lot of these players, especially the skill position players,
and then includes the defensive skill pasion players.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
You have a moment in a game.
Speaker 3 (01:18:08):
Where it's your call to make or your opportunity to
make a play. Thanks, and we're not we're not getting
that enough. And part of it, again is because the youth.
It's a it's a system that I don't think a
lot of these guys on defense love. They're they're playing
their hardest. It's just not it's not good enough. And
especially in the secondary.
Speaker 22 (01:18:26):
You know what, though, winning winning drive for the pack
five and a half minutes left third and ten from
their own forty eight. And because three guys cannot win
a one on one pass rush, Yeah, three guys who
were in position, John, they were in position.
Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
Can I thrown a fourth guy that couldn't win a
one on one with a wide receiver that's a rookie,
I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:46):
No, No, My point is that though, right, the guys
are there to make plays. The players have to win,
and they would put in position to do it.
Speaker 22 (01:18:54):
And they failed on a thirty two yard pass play right,
a prayer that was actually.
Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
Defended well by the way.
Speaker 1 (01:18:59):
But again, much like they couldn't finish games, they can't
finish the play, you know, and that and I mean so,
I mean that that's the backbreaking play right there.
Speaker 3 (01:19:09):
Right, you run out of things to say, you run
out of things that get upset about, and you get
despondent because what else can you say? You say it
over and over again. It's the same thing.
Speaker 6 (01:19:18):
Every single y quarterback had five seconds.
Speaker 2 (01:19:21):
It was a long time.
Speaker 1 (01:19:24):
I mean, come on, and the throw hung in the
air forever. All right, guys, you got about two minutes
here each. You give me like fifteen seconds. Giants lines
