Speaker 1 (00:00):
Obviously we took ab Duel, so really excited about adding
another pass rusher to the organization.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Great kid.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
We spent a lot of time with him, had been
in constant communication with him.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
I know.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
You know, you guys asked the last time about the foot.
We feel good about the foot.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Where he is, He's he's been running, been working out,
you know, so we're not really concerned with that at
this point.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
But uh, again, we're just excited to add a really
good football player to the organization and you know, it
is really going to help our defense move forward.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
You guys took a lot of time on the clock.
How much were you contemplating, you know, taking phone calls,
contemplating other things at that spot.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, we were high fiving and hugging and that's what
that was. Yeah, and then we got him on the
phone and yeah, so we took about five minutes there
and you know, just we were just talking and hanging
out and joining the moment.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Really, when did you realize that this would be a possibility,
that this is kind of the guy you we're gonna
likely land on, And did the action before you at too? Like,
when did you hear about that and did it kind
of change anything.
Speaker 5 (00:59):
For you guys.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, it seemed like it, you know, just in terms
of the order of the draft. It shifted probably around
that Colorado Pro Day, and you know, that's really when
Travis going number two really started to catch steam because
a lot of time before that it felt like Abdul
was going to be the picket too. So as we
go went through our process with all the players that
were in the mix, and again we went through a
thorough process, you know, through the entire draft, and we
(01:21):
had a pretty good sense probably on Wednesday, that this
was going to happen. We had caught win of the
Jacksonville Cleveland thing, so we've we've known that that was
probably gonna happen for a couple of days here, So
we just didn't know, you know, which way Jacksonville.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Was going to go.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah, full an offensive guy. It looks like you have
a pretty big smile on your face. Talk about everything
you love about Abdul. Yeah, about the process, you know
what everything practiced.
Speaker 6 (01:44):
You know, I had a chance to get some breakfast
with him when I went down to Penn State to
visit my daughter for a parents weekend that we had
lined up and in the morning When we were getting
ready to leave, I went to a little breakfast spot
down there at Penn State that I've been to a
few times and we had a great breakfast, great meeting.
(02:06):
He's a great kid, and he's an exceptional player. He's
got great quickness, bend, he's hard to block. He played
off the ball the year before and he had some
instincts in that area as well.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Smart.
Speaker 6 (02:22):
Just had a really good meeting with him and then
he was up here. Fun guy to evaluate, you know,
you look at him from an offensive perspective and things
that you know, I think we might have to do
if we ever had to play against him, which we
have certain guys in our division that that are similar
to that. But he's coming in. He's going to do
everything he can to, you know, to help us out,
and he'll start from ground zero with us and Shane
(02:45):
and Charlie. But he's got he's got a great personalities.
He's a lot of fun to be around, and he's
a good football player.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Daves, if you don't mind, Just when he was in
a building, did he kind of engulf everything the old
history of the giant line backage tradition?
Speaker 6 (02:59):
Yeah, I think you guys that he put He puts
something out there, but he's gonna have to be abdul
uh and you know, do the things we need him
to do. But I think he has positioned flexibility. He
can do a variety of things. He's extremely athletic for
a big guy. He's played on the edge, he's played
off the ball. You know how we used you know
(03:20):
how we deploy him. You know, we have to get
him here and work with him. But smart, he's got
a great personality and uh again, he was a fun
guy to evaluate. It's tough gout a block.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
The fact that he had only one year at defensive end.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
Did that give you a.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Feeling that his ceiling that he's not.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Even close to his ceiling at that position. More experience
that he's going to gain.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Uh well, I mean you saw what he can do
when he's rushing and on the edge and the issues
that he creates with his get off and bend. It's
really unique. So again, that was his first year, but
he's an exceptional athlete. Just really look forward to work
with him. Very happy that we had the opportunity to
(04:08):
get this guy.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Was he the number one player on your board?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, I'm not going to get into who's who's we're
on our board, But we're a static to have him.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Obviously he was in the top three, he was definitely
in the top thre Do you both.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
You guys?
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Do you I mean, you know, offense, quarterbacks and scoring more.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Points, that's all important.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
But at this point, I mean, is there anything wrong.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
With developing an identity as a really really good defensive
team And where do you think you are with this
addition to be a team that you.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Could say, you know, we're a top five.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Or a top ten defense.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Yeah, we're in phase one so of our off season
program and have one draft selection, so let's get him here.
Let's get him into our defense again. We're i'd say,
there's a lot of happy people that he was there
upstairs it with Shane and Charlie and we had Andre Patterson,
who's coach the defensive line a long time, and really
take a look at him, and you know, we're happy
(05:00):
that we have this young man to help us and
we're gonna try to do everything we can do to
help him. But you know, there's a long way to
go here.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Decision just tious.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
How much consideration was quarterback at three?
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, it's as long as the process is Dan, you
go through it, you go through it. This this wasn't
an easy decision, but throughout the process it became an
easy decision that led us to today. So there's a
series of events, meetings, you know, it's very detailed process.
Meet you know again, pro Day's privates, breakfasts that Dave's
(05:32):
had with him, so it leads up to it makes
it an easy decision.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
On draft day, you mentioned that at the Colorado Pro Day,
the draft seemed to take a turn the idea that Travis.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Would end up there.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
How much more did you.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Guys put into your evaluation.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Of a duel at all at that situation when you
kind of got the sense that maybe he was gonna
be sitting there for you instead.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Of Yeah, Abdul's one of those guys that as a
true freshman off the film, if you're just watching anybody
against Penn State, he's playing off the ball, He's he's
moving at a different speed than everybody else. So as
personnel folks, you're always man, who's that freshman like kid
at Ohio State this year, that receiver, like you're right,
like that guy's jumping off the film already, So he
was one of those guys. So he was on our
(06:16):
radar from early on in August, like we got to
go see Penn State. We have to go see this
guy play. And I was able to see him live
at Ohio against Ohio State. I was able to see
him live, you know, in the Orange Bowl against Notre Dame.
So he was always a guy that was on our radar.
That is a special talent and uh, you know again,
we're just fortunate, you know, to to be able to
land him.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
They already have Cavon and Brian Burns obviously on the edge.
How do you which what's the vision? Like, how do
you guys expect to make that work in the natural
assumption by some people's gonna be out, they're gonna trade
came out. What do you say to that?
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, I mean we'vet we're going to exercise this fifth
year option.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
We've already told him that. You know, that was earlier
this week, so you know, I know that stuff's out there.
But like again, it's you can just throw anything at
the wall right now and people.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Go with it.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
So, uh, Kavon's going to be here. We're excited to
have him. I mean you can't have enough pass rusher.
So you know, between those guys coming off the edge,
decks in the middle, Nacho Roy, Roberts, Harris, you know,
I mean, I'm excited about the d line. We had
it led better, so uh, Chauncey Golston like, there's some
you know, we're turning the corner where there's some depth
at some of these positions and and.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
That'll really help us. So I'm excited about the group.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
You know again just well you know again we're phase one,
so you know, Shane and his staff and dabes will
get together and you know, figure out the creativity of
how they're gonna ul as of personnel. Seriously, did you,
you know, make an attempt to trade at number one?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
And was there any point you felt he came close
or Tennessee not interested?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah, we we We've had conversations going up and back
and you know, again just takes two to tangle in
those situations. And yeah, there wasn't any uh you know,
Tennessee you know stayed and took camp Moore.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
So you done tonight, we'll see.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
You always ask if you guys can go home. Yeah,
you guys can whatever you gotta do to do your job.
I'm never gonna tell somebody how to do their job.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Obviously, you can't have enough pass rushers. But just knowing
obviously the history and Brian Nas is stupid. Knowing the
history of this franchise with great pass rushers, how exciting
is it to just kind of add abdual to that
makes knowing what this team is historically done with good
pass rushers.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, I mean it's we were talking all the way
down just in terms of adding you know, dogs and
a certain type of mentality, and you know, I would
say two years in a row with Malik's competitiveness and
the toughness that he plays with, and then you you
add another guy like that in the first round, like
Abdua Carter and the motor he plays with and the toughness.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
And the violence. You know, that's uh, you.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Know that that can really help. You know, the identity
question was mentioned. That can help develop an identity, you know,
those type of players, and the more more of those
guys that you can acquire, you know, the more that
can come to life.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
In regards to using Abdul. Can you envision stuff with
the three of them together? You know, I'm talking about
Kavon and Brian Burns like, is that something you guys
have thought about can envision?
Speaker 6 (08:56):
Yeah, potentially, yep.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
I guess the pitch that to do.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
I guess when you were talking about his fit, what
was kind of what did you tell him about?
Speaker 6 (09:05):
Well, I would say, Charlotte was you know, it's not recruiting.
You're not recruiting athletes to come and they get to
choose you get to choose them. But we had we
had very good conversations with uh with him again, he's
played multiple spots off the ball, linebacker, moved and was
very productive on the edge, and he's a very intelligent player.
(09:27):
So again, once we get him here and he gets
ingrained in our system and gets to be around all
the guys, there's you know, there's a long time here
before we we actually get going here. But you know,
we're excited to have him.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
With conversations you've already had about moving up from thirty
four and is that where you've planned to go and
make a lot of phone calls about that.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Now, this is an interesting drafts.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
I'm actually excited to go see who's been taken so
far because I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
You know, it's gonna be it's gonna be interesting. So yeah,
we'll see how the night goes. We'll see.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Obviously we're not far from you know, the back end
of the you know, the first round. So we we
have five or six players that when we talk about, hey,
if they're there, you know, we could talk about it,
or you know, we're sitting in a good position tomorrow
when you have the second pick in the second round.
People sit around all day on Friday and you know,
they fall in love with guys, so you know, you
can also turn that into multiple picks as well, So
(10:15):
there's a couple.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Of different avenues. I'm just excited to.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Go up there again because you know, we've been so
focused on what we're doing. I haven't really heard a
lot of rumors on you know, what's going to go
on behind us. So I'm excited to you know, it's
a great time of year for us.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
It's fun.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
We put a lot of work into it, so it's
fun to see how how everything goes and sit up
there with the scouting staff and personnel guys and you know,
just see what other players, you know, other teams thought
a players. So it's a fun weekend.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Thanks
