Speaker 1 (00:00):
Uh, all right.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Obviously we traded back for Jackson, fired.
Speaker 1 (00:03):
Up to uh to get him. We went through an
extensive quarterback process that started as far.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Back as last May in terms of evaluating the quarterbacks
and Dave's and I been through this quite a few times.
And at the end of the day where we're fired
up to have Jackson Dart you know, as part of
the organization and look forward to working with him.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
What stood out about about him to you and to you, Ah, yeah,
I think he's got a lot of qualities you look
for and a good quarterback. He's tough, makes good decisions
with the football, pushes the ball down the field, has
athletic ability, played at a really tough conference, you know,
started there at USC as a young guy. But you know,
(00:45):
did a really good job throughout this process of of
our meetings, board work workouts, and the tape that that
we like. So look forward to working with him. I'm
glad he's here and get started as soon as we can.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Earlier this process started, but you guys are obviously we're
our quarterbacks. You know, right up through last week of
getting exposed to curious, when did Jackson kind of crystallize
as the guy that you know, if he was there
in this range that you guys all wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
We were still meeting on Monday of this week, so
again just the whole, the whole process once you finally
have all the information, and it took us a little
bit longer to get all the information because of the
scheduling and the calendar this year. So once we had,
you know, all the information, we we circled back up
in a meeting and we went through it. And even
on the plane ride back from our our last private workout,
you know, we were meeting with the offensive staff already
(01:31):
going through everything and you know, so it started there
and then we circled back up again on Monday, and
you know that's that's where we shut the door and
we went through everything and you know, started to set.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
How we we had the quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Just started looking to move back up, and you know,
to make this and tell us how that kind of
came about, how you.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Decided, Yeah, it was mid early early to mid twenties.
I'm trying to remember what maybe in the twenty two
twenty three range. You know, we started to look to
to move up, and uh, a lot of teams just
decided to stay and pick. So again, you know, you
try to do deals, you try to move up, and
you know, if if teams want to stay and pick,
there's there's not much you can do there. So we
(02:12):
just we kept chipping away and a lot of good
relationships with with general managers around the league, so easy conversations.
You know that the teams that weren't gonna weren't gonna
move back. You know, we're up front and pretty straightforward
right off the bat. So that allowed us to get
ahead of the next team and you know, start working
through potential trades. Yeah they picked you know, yeah we did.
(02:33):
We uh, we didn't start until you know, so wherever
they were. They were twenty one, I believe, So, yeah,
we started after Pittsburgh. So we you know, again, we
went through all these scenarios before the day started. You know,
what we're gonna do at three and then at what point,
you know, we thought it would make sense where you know,
it was important for us to hold on to pick
sixty five.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
I'm glad we were able to hold on to that.
You know, I think.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
The the pick in the fourth round there at the
top is is is a good pick too, So you know,
try to keep a couple of those picks, So we
gave up ninety nine, which was the comp pick, and
we're able to keep you know, sixty five, so still
gives us some ammo to you know, to draft some
more players tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
When you i mean, when you buy a quarterback up
high and then you say we really want to get them,
I mean, there's a lot of moving parts to go
to this, right. I mean, you have to be confident
that these quarterbacks are going to drop and that you
can get up. I mean, what was your confidence level
after you take caught or Okay, Now we've got to
see what happens that you know, these guys can just
come off the board.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
And they're going yeah, And that's that's the hard part.
There's thirty one other teams and again, sometimes we assume
everybody sees things the way we do so and that's
not always the case. So again, you you take the
information you have, You try to gather as much as
you can throughout the day, and you know, you sometimes
you get a feel for what teams are doing and
sometimes you have no idea. So hats off to my
(03:51):
staff they do a great job of making these calls
around the league and the pro scouting staff puts together
you know needs, so you know, we have kind of
top priorities that the teams needs. You go off of that, Hey,
you know, do we need to move up here? Not
not really, there's you they're probably gonna go this position
or whatever it may be.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
So very professional in.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
The room, very detailed as a collaborative effort, you know,
amongst the group to to be able to execute the
way we did.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
So do you feel the pressure or an urgency knowing
that there were other teams that had yet to differ quarterback?
But the feeling of the league was that they were
looking for quarterbacks and who might be trying to come
up ahead of you guys?
Speaker 1 (04:28):
And what was that process like? And how much did
you research it?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
And yeah, and and you do all of those things,
and you just you're not in their buildings.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
You don't really know.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
So the best of our ability, we try to project,
you know, what what teams may or may not do. So, yeah,
there were there were a few we were we're a
little worried they may go quarterback or yeah, you're thinking
somebody behind us could easily come up and take somebody.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
But uh, you know, we.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Practiced some restraint there as a certain part in the
twenties and you know, get it, it paid off and
you know we're able to get Jackson for what we did.
Speaker 7 (05:03):
Joe, you've actually put years of work into finding this quarterback.
You talk a lot about your process in doing that.
How gratified are you, you know, to finally, you know,
pull the trigger on a quarterback and really, what was it?
You know, finally they put Jackson over the top to
make him the guy.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah, it's been. It's been exhausting to be honest with
I mean, we've been you know, whether it's you know,
here all week and then you go on the road
in the fall, or you know, all the way up
to the Easter weekend you're still on the road. So
credit to the coaches, my staff, the film they watched,
you know, the area scouts putting us in the correct
direction on the quarterbacks to go see. So yeah, it's
(05:43):
it's you know, I love the staff of the coaching staff,
the collaboration, the way we all work together. It's a
very detailed process and we couldn't do it without the coaches.
And because I don't know our offense inside out.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Like they do, or what they're going to ask these
kids to do. So they do a great job.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
You know, the coaching staff's ability to again Easter weekend
and be away from their families and go do this stuff,
so you know.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Credit to them. You know, I'm glad we're able to
get a guy that we're convicted on and we like.
So yeah, it's it's gratifying.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I'll probably on the right home be able to decompress,
but it you know, it's pretty stressful up there the
last fifteen to twenty minutes trying to get this done.
So I'll probably reflect on it later in the day,
but I'm I'm fired up about the.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Two players that we were able to get tonight.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
For you, you're such a you know, noted quarterback guy.
You love evaluating and look at these quarterbacks. What when
we you kind of sold on Jackson and what's your scouting?
Your quarter of him? He wasn't the first time, but
he's a guy obviously you guys.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Both love Yeah. I'd say, look, we've had conversations all
the way up to you.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Know, this morning actually about a variety of.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Things, and you know, I like the way he plays,
I like his competitive fire, I like his accuracy. I
like his ability again to push the ball down the field,
his athletic ability to run with the football. I know,
you know, I know the system that they ran down
there at Ole Miss. It's similar to the one we
had at Alabama. So there's you know, there's some some
(07:06):
carryover on some of these things. But I think this
guy's got better every year he's played. He's a leader,
he was smart, he has the attributes that that we
were looking for. So excited to have him. Look forward
to getting him in the room. And you know he's
got a lot to learn. It's a it'll be a
process here with him, but you know, he's a guy
(07:27):
we look forward to working with.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
How would you describe his personality?
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, outgoing. He's an outgoing kid.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
From our meetings with him, he's personable. You know, we've
had multiple dinners with him. We met with him at
the Senior Bowl. On the field, he's fiery. I mean
you see him like we have to probably teach him
how to slide. You know when you watch him, you
know he's trying to run people over in the Senior
Bowl too. You know it's like, dude, you're you're in
an All Star game. You probably shouldn't be trying to
run that linebacker over, and he did that in the game.
So he's tough, he's competitive. You see the leadership, you know,
(07:57):
seeing him in games, seeing him live, He's not afraid
to get on guys. So you know, again he's you
guys will get to meet him tomorrow and I'm sure
you'll enjoy visiting with him.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
He broke of those records.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
But yeah, no, Eli likes him, a big, big fan.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
You know Archie as well.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
So yeah, the family, they obviously all missed through and
through and you know, follow him and watch a lot
of their games, so you know, they were definitely fans
of of Jackson. What games did you see in the
egg boll the Egg Bowl? I went to the Egg
Bowl this year and so we went from Dallas. We
stayed over after the Dallas game on Thanksgiving, went to
the Egg Bowl and then the Iron Bowl.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
So again it was just.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
We had been studying him and uh, you know, to me,
the accuracy, a lot of stuff that they ball talked about, accuracy, anticipation,
you know, there's athleticism. He's not a statue in the pocket,
you know, getting the ability to throw the deep ball,
intermediate throws, short throws, you know, a lot of RPO stuff.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
But again, he's in a really.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Good spot where he can come in and he can
sit behind a couple veteran quarterbacks and learn, and you know,
it doesn't have to be thrown out there right away.
So I think it's a from a developmental standpoint and
ability to grow, you know, I think it's a perfect
situation for a young quarterback an ideal world.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Would you like him to just sort of sit and
in turn this year, I mean you said, good, you're.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
Time with him sort of learning.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
From them in the city.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yeah, i'd say all that that'll play out. You know,
Russell be our starter and that's how it'll be once
we get started here in the spring. And you know, look,
the process of developing a quarterback is just that. So
we're going to do everything we can to develop him
and bring him along. And you know, we have some
good quarterbacks in the room relative to playtime, experience, some
(09:45):
you know metals on the wall, if you will, that
have done a great job here these first four days.
It's really early phase one, but the two of those
guys that that we've added have added a lot of value.
Already through the room in terms of a leadership and
communication and it's been four days, so it's a long
way to go with with both of those guys. But again,
(10:07):
I want to make this about about Jackson, his night
young player. I think he's got a good skill set
and look forward to developing it with them.
Speaker 6 (10:15):
What do you think what do you think that Russ
and Jamis can show Jackson? What did they What did
can they?
Speaker 5 (10:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I think and that's a fair question, Patty. Look, they're
learning our offense right now, so they need to worry
about Russ and Jamis. They're great teammates. They've been great
teammates these first four days to be around them, as
are some of the other guys that that Joe and
the staff brought in. Very happy with the additions that
we've made in terms of people, but leadership too. You know,
Holland's been fantastic. But look, those guys got a lot
(10:44):
to learn. Uh, you know, four days in we're developing
a system, you know, around them, and you know, we'll
add some of the things that that Jackson does well
when he's out there participating, but they need to focus
on on doing their job the best that they can do.
Their leadership has been very good with all the rooms.
The first four days.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Obviously you had a choice of hip profile quarterbacks when
you're in the clock that you consider schedule her at
all at that point.
Speaker 6 (11:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Again, we went through an extensive process and you know,
we moved up for for Jackson. So that's I mean again,
we're fired up to having him. But you know, at
the end of the day, when we went through the
process and we ranked him, you know, this is how
we had him ranked and Jackson, we felt the value
matched up.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
With you know, where we sell the player. You started
to swing when.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
You're at the combine the comportant just from where you
guys are to take a swing on what you hope
would be your future quarterback.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Yeah, I guess we took three since that that comment
I made.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
You know, I don't think Russell gonna be hear in ten.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Years Jackson might be right swings right.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah again, we we we traded up for him. We're
we're we're ecstatic to have him like he's he's he's
got a lot of makings of a good quarterback and
there's a long way to go. There's a developmental process
that he's gonna have to go through and again, these
these offenses are not easy to learn and the execution
has to be at a high level. So again, we took
three swings since the combine and added.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Three three new quarterbacks to the room.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
And you know, I'm excited about the make up at
the room too.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
You said you were.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Meeting up until Monday about what you guys are going
to do at quarterback.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
How challenging were the deliberations about you do all this
work on Shador, you do all this work on Jackson,
How did that go?
Speaker 7 (12:19):
Could you take us behind the scenes on how you
came to the decision.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, I mean, I would say it's it's very similar
to how they've they've always gone.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Pat.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
There's a lot of good communication with i'd say a
select number of people that have studied the players that
have been on all the trips, that have been in
all the meetings, and everybody has, you know, opinions, and
they're they're good opinions to have. And we have again
I can't emphasize, you know, Dennis, Tim Brandon, Joe Kafka, Shay,
(12:51):
Chad Hall, that kind of group that have worked on this.
You know, everybody had thoughts and opinions and brankings. And
then when you once you sit down and you sit
down with the eight or nine people that are talking
about it, you generally come up with a with a
consensus of here's this guy, here's this guy, here's this guy.
It's it's a good process, you know, like Joe said,
(13:13):
it's it's a lot of work. It is a lot
of work. You watch a lot of tape, you have
a lot of visits, but it's fun. It's fun to
get to meet these guys.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
Needing the right personality to be the quarterback here and
in this market. About Jackson's personality where his makeup makes
you think that he can do this job in this
setting the way.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
You've waited out.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, we try to gauge that as well as we can.
And that's that's a that's a difficult question that none
of us really know until you get here and understand
what the New York market is and what it's like
playing in that market.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
So again, his his.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
His resilience, He's tough, he's competitive, you know, takes hits,
gets back up, you know, getting he's running people over.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Just the makeup of kid in the way he's wired.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
He's going to keep getting up and competing and and
and that's one of the things that you know, we
really liked about him.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah, and I'd say, are we you know we there's
a process too when he gets here in terms of
it's of developing this player. I don't expect him to
know everything right off the bat. There's a it's a
hard position to play, a hard position to coach. But
he has the traits that we look for and covet
in a guy to be able to learn and grow.
(14:30):
So his expectations coming in is just to improve every day.
Soak it up like a sponge, you know, learn from
the coaches, learn from the veteran quarterbacks in the room,
try to improve every day he can in terms of
his understanding of the system. And then once we get
on the field, the physical part of it. And that's
what we're looking for from him right now, is to
(14:50):
you know, grow each and every day with a positive mindset.
And I think he has the tools physically and mentally
to do that.
