Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, Darris Alexander three technique that we did a lot
of work on. He came in on a thirty visit
as well, was down at the Senior Bowl, and you
know just where we are. We we thought we needed
to add some youth to the defensive line. And you know,
this kid is you know, just under six four, three
hundred and fifteen pounds, thirty four inch arms and freaky athletic.

(00:22):
So you know, down the Senior Bowl he had a
really good week and you know, dra Patterson, you know,
I think the world of him and Brian Cox and
you know, getting a guy like this that can come
in and develop with the depth that we have and
you know, getting high ceiling for this player. So it works,
Haded to add another player to our our front seven.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
How important was that week at the Senior Bowl for you?
It's just a guy who's coming from a smaller school.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, you know, he's at Toledo.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
He's an older kid, he's twenty four, a little bit
of a late bloomer, but yeah, that was was really
important in the schemes that they play too. You know,
some of these guys, the defensive linemen are asked to
read and react. You know know that I always taught
to get on edges. It's somewhat of a selfless job
at times in there in terms of the scheme that
you're you're asked to play. So when you see him
getting stagger stance, line up as a three technique and

(01:07):
get upfield and use his length, you know, you could
really see, you know, what this kid would be able
to potentially do. So yeah, we're we're excited to work
with him.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
What do you make of your front seven now and
kind of that identity guys.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, there's a lot of depth. I mean there's there's
a lot of depth there. I'm excited about the group.
You know, again, we got to do a better job,
you know, stopping the run this year, and I think
we helped out with some of the depth.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
And then just if we can get the third down.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
You know, we've got a lot of options in terms
of you know, where guys can line up in versatility.
You know, Chauncey's got some versatility. There's got some versatility,
you know obviously with uh Carter who he you know,
there's there's some versatile pieces in there that can move
around and.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
That can be difficult, difficult for offenses. So I'm excited
about the group. You know, we'll see how they all
come together.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
But you know we've got again Andrea Patterson and Brian Cox,
I think a lot of and you know they're gonna.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Have got some really good depth in competition. You know
in the front seven, when you go for.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
A guy at this particular position, you know you have
Dexter there, so do you and you guys start thinking,
you know, who is going to compliment him because you know.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
He's going to be there.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Yeah, exactly, There's we always talk about four hands. There's
oftentimes there's four hands on Dexter Lawrence. So you know,
if you can get somebody on the opposite side of
Dexter that can win one on ones or that that's
going to see a lot of ones one on ones
and has the ability to win win those matchups consistently,
then you know that makes it difficult as well.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
You hited a lot to the front seven. Uh even
if dual you're talking about Roy Robertson, Harris Ledbetters. How
important is that to you to sort of rebuild that
unit as a whole.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yeah, it was important, And you know we didn't come
in to day saying, hey, we have to have a
three technique. But we went with the board, we went
and how we saw it, but it was it was important,
you know, not just stopping the run, but getting after
the passer.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
And you know, again.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
We talked about an identity a little bit last night
with with Carter. So you know, again I like what
we've done on defense. And you know, again, I can't
say we went in the day like this is what
we were looking for.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
We let the board talk.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
To us, this is something we have to just rebuild.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, well, especially our depth, especially our depth because late
in the season when when the injuries occurred, and you know,
outside backer and inside you know, we had some guys
in there that were battling and did a really good
job for us. But we just thought, you know, upgrading
the depth, adding some youth, you know, would be really beneficial.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Brian, the biggest story in the league right now is
that Shador Sanders is still available.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
There was a report.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
From Todd mcshaye that you, specifically you and him had
a meeting that did not go very well.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Anything you want to clear up on that or deny
you're coming up.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
Yeah, I'd say we had good meetings with all the
guys that came in here on thirty visits. Quarterback meetings
were productive and you know, we're happy with Jackson. Just
to go back on Darius though, Dan with your you
know that Senior Bowl is important for us, so first
time that, you.

Speaker 6 (04:00):
Know, some of the coaches go down. I go down
every year with Joe.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
It's a you know, it's something that's kind of get
gets the process going.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
We met with some quarterbacks down there.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
We met with a variety of people, and you're able
to get some some guys ahead of say the combine
and see them do some different things. And he did
a nice job there with some of the things that
they asked him to do. So it's a very helpful
part of the process.

Speaker 7 (04:24):
Is it important for smaller school guys more proman guy
at the Senior Bowl to show that you can kind
of measure up and kind of get into that next
group of players that you're considering when the evaluation moves along.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
I mean again for me, it's just you know, I always
I always liked going down and sit to I mean,
you'd like not to go down, you'd like to be
playing at that time, But if not, I think it's
just a for for me, it's a good introductory phase.
And you know the players that do participate, you know,
in that Bowl game is you know, it's it's very
helpful for them, I think, but it's it's really helpful

(04:57):
for for me. But small school maybe a guy that
they haven't seen as much. You know, it's it's a
good start of the process.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I would say a good example of that North Dakota State kid.
I mean he wuldn't.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
I think he was in the top fifteen is able kid,
you know, I mean that that really helped him down there.
I mean he showed versatility and you know, I wouldn't
get a better competition and held his own, did a
good job.

Speaker 7 (05:15):
Alexander would look like a guy that if he didn't
know where he was from Power Conference.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah yeah, he really did. He really and you could
talk to him about it.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
But you know he had he had chances to leave
Toledo and he was he was loyal to him.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
So you know that says something too.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Joe, do you think Shador is a better player than
his slide suggest so far?

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Just league wide?

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yeah, a lot of work on Yeah, I'm not going
to get into you know, this is Darius's press conference,
and you know the New York Giants, So we can
talk about that if you want, but I don't want
to talk about any other players.

Speaker 7 (05:44):
Obviously, yesterday would throw the trade up to get Jackson,
knowing that today you'd have a wait.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, and for both you was it.

Speaker 7 (05:51):
You know, you get here, I'm sure the normal time
and the draft start at normal time, and you know
you'd have to.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Wait to sixty five. Is that as much as you'd like?

Speaker 7 (05:59):
When you yesterdy's hard to watch them being being come
off the board, off the board, off the board.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, it is. It was.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
You know at thirty four to day would have been
really hard, you know, just looking at We're like, man,
if we were picking boy, this would be really tough.
This would be a tough decision if we still had
the thirty fourth pick, because there were quite a few
players up there that we liked, and then you know,
as you went through the day there there ended up
being you know, it was a choice between a couple
of players that we like. So now what we do
is we go and we hope that you know, some
of those guys we like continue to fall. So yeah,

(06:25):
it was along when whatever. It was a couple hours,
you know, waiting to pick. So, yeah, it's it can
be painful sometimes watching that.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Is this another example? I think he came on a
thirty visit.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
He did this another.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Example of whatever you were able to gather from that visit.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yeah, and again we met with him at the Senior
Bowl initially, and they do a great job down there
of allotting us time.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
And you know, we have a good process at the.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Senior Bowl in terms of how we set up our
what we do. And you know, I think again Dave's staff,
you know the fact that those guys are willing to
come down on off week and help out when they
do so. Again, maybe you guys can maybe there's a
trend these thirty visits that we take. But you know,
I'd rather be you know, accurate with the information that
we haven't really get to know the players and know
if they fit or don't fit, versus you know, trying

(07:11):
to play a game or not getting all the information
and missing on you know, character or.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Something like that.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
How do you look at a guy this position when
twenty four years old? Do you look at age there?

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Does it matter?

Speaker 4 (07:21):
Does it mean a ton to you? Do you have
to view them differently.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, not really, he's a little you know why, you know,
why is he that old?

Speaker 5 (07:27):
What?

Speaker 1 (07:28):
You know, again, we're still coming out of the COVID
stage and some of that stuff. So you look at that,
you look at the durability, you know, what's the mileage
on the player, and then you know, if the medical's fine.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
And there's really no concerns, then then you're okay with him.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
And again at his age, coming from the school he's
at with you know, my faith, and you know the
coaches that he's going to come to and the veterans
that are in that room. You know, somebody like this
can can really flourish in that room.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
You look at it differently by position at all. I mean,
like Tyler Shuck was the guy that was drafted today.
Obviously older doesn't matter by position. Do you look at
it as like, oh, yeah, maybe a twenty four to
twenty five year old guy should dominate if he's playing
against nineteen year olds.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Yeah and that yeah, yeah, I understand what you're saying,
and but that doesn't affect us, you know, whether we
draft him or not.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
You know, it's uh, they're they're that age.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Why or that that age and again coming out of
the COVID where you know some people had the six years.
But yeah, you do look at that and you assess it,
and then that's where you know, the Senior Bowl versus
a different competition, you have to look at the scheme too.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
I think you really have to.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Understand what the school and the staff is asking the
player to do, and then you know how that translates
to what you're going to ask him to do.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
So what Duel said that you know he's ready to go?
You said last night, you guys are good with this foot,
but do you have to.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Manage that at all?

Speaker 2 (08:39):
You can plan to beause I don't know exactly the
extent of it isn't know what you've heard from your doctors.
Just like, how are you going to approach that with him?

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Yeah, he's uh, he's good to go.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I asked him he was Sunday or Monday? And uh,
I said, Hey, if you're gonna be working out, can
you just send me something, you know, let me know
you're you can run or jump or something. So he
he was home in Philly and he's running up a
hill like the grass is probably this high, but he's
sprinting up this hill and then he's doing linebacker drill

(09:07):
shuffle runs up the hill, and then the last video
clip he looks at me and he points at me
and then he does a standing backflip.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
So I was like, foot looks good. Foot looks good.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
So yeah, I don't have any concern right now. We'll
see when the volume picks up in the load, you know,
but he's good to go. He has zero pain in
the foot, so you know, we feel good about Our
medical staff feels good about it. But we we.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
You're just whether it's ab Dual or some of these
other draft picks. I'd say we have conversations and account
for that Dan leading up to rookie mini camp, and
some of the draft picks will just do individual drills,
not much team.

Speaker 6 (09:47):
They won't do team. They won't do seven on seven.

Speaker 5 (09:51):
You know, quarterback will probably do it just because there's
no rush but the running. And you know, these guys
that have been on visits, We've talked about this before,
and they're traveling and they're trying to get a work
out in the hotel and they're not really properly you know,
working out for football. It's through no fault of their own.
So you know, we have i'd say, significant conversations each
year leading up to rookie Mini Camp and then the

(10:13):
plan for these guys to get them implemented into our program.
You know, we'll have a specific plan for those guys.

Speaker 7 (10:21):
The last year, you had a lot of young you
know a lot of young players, rookies came in and
how to take big roles early on. I'm curious, but
they seemed like they were going into rooms that were
relatively young or you know, some guys that were better
at this point. With Alexander is when you meet with him,
is personality also.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
Part of it?

Speaker 7 (10:40):
Knowing that you're putting him in a room where there
a lot of big personalities, a lot of experienced guys,
and how he how is he going to fit, you know,
how he's gonna fit physically, but also how is he
going to fit you know, sure emotionally personality wise.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah, I think it's always important if you can have
some veterans on the team that are that are good leaders,
that have played a lot of football, and in the
defensive line, we certainly have that.

Speaker 6 (11:03):
And then add you know, add Dre and Cox to that.
Two veteran coaches.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
That that have a lot of you know, a lot
of intel to give those guys an information and technique
and two very good football coaches and then you know,
Decks and Notch and all those guys that are you know,
that's a good that's a good room in terms of
a leadership, veteran leadership on our team, and.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
We don't have that at every spot. We were working
on some of that.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
You know, we got it, you know, a tight end
with Manhertz and Devin Motor singletary at running back spot,
and our secondary is pretty young.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
Uh, you know, they're pretty young there.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
And then uh, you know, Bobby's a vet board, so
we had some guys and then the line room offensive line,
we got some vets, so you know, you get some
vets that you you know, know that can do a
good job of showing those guys how to be pros
and then try to you know, infuse talent with young
guys that are that are smart, that are tough, that
are eager to learn, that love the game of football.

Speaker 6 (11:57):
That's kind of our approach.
