Speaker 1 (00:00):
Like to thank Daves and his coaching staff, my personnel
staff for all the hard work, the collaboration you know,
to come to where we are today. So with that,
I will open up the questions.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
The two players that you reportedly you know, claimed off
the waivers Upbraid in Enrico.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Payton, Yeah, both boat. Braid was in Baltimore with the Ravens.
He's a player out of Maryland that we spent some
time with coming out in the draft and we we
liked you know, he played on special teams for him
last year. Also can be a depth safety for us.
So high character kid, smart, tough, dependable, checked all those
boxes and you know, can also participate on special teams.
(00:43):
Rico Peyton, you know a guy that also you know
last year during this time, you know, we were hoping,
you know, you hope some of these guys get cut
and they end up you know, making teams and playing.
And he's a really good special teams player and we
also think he has defensive values. So just to upgrade,
you know, the depth of both of those positions. You know,
we're happy to get those guys.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Young players on purpose.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
We were just looking for, you know, good football players
that could help us, but yeah, I mean you can
look at it. You know, the veterans don't have to
go through waivers, so that's something that could have been
done previously. If they are subject to waivers, then you
got to wait and see how it plays out in
terms of who you're going to be rewarded.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
It's a decision with Tommy and how hopeful were you
maybe that you were able to bring him back here
on the practice s one and sort of have that
played out.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah, you know, we've got three on the active roster,
so it's it can be difficult sometimes depending how the
roster shapes up, where you have some needs where you
decide to go deep so you know, in certain positions,
and it just worked out that. You know, we're happy
for Tommy. You know, he was claimed by New England.
I'm not sure how many other teams put in claims.
We'll be able to probace see that later today or tomorrow,
but you know, we we we would have loved to
(01:52):
have him back, you know, he was claimed and you
know we wish him nothing but the best.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
How do you feel about the quarterback room after training camp?
Speaker 2 (02:02):
And where is that?
Speaker 1 (02:03):
I feel good about it? You know, we had a
good spring, good training camp, the preseason games. I felt
like those guys played played well in all three games.
So I feel good about where it is right now.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
This is just tell us what you know, your thoughts
on the roster, and your excitement.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, you know, I'm excited to we've been We've been
grinding here, so we'll grind for the next couple of days,
do a little bit of Washington work, probably tomorrow. But
there's still a lot of things that we need to
focus on to continue to improve on, like the players
that we have, like the coaches that we have. You
got to go out there and do.
Speaker 6 (02:45):
It, Joe.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
Obviously, we spend so much time talking about Darden, just
kind of what he's done this preseason. Two questions, One,
what have you thought about what he's done? And two,
this is now gonna be Russell Wilson's team, So I
guess what are you feeling about now his ability to
lead this team for what you saw this preseason.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, the room in general has been good throughout the
spring and camp, so, you know, Dave, Shay Kafka, those
guys have done a really good job getting Jackson up
to speed, and there's a lot. There's a lot to
learn at the quarterback position, and there's a lot put
on their plate, and that's it's hard for young players
to come in and not only be able to learn it,
(03:25):
but break the huddle, get up there, motion, read the defense,
understand what's going on if there's option routes, and then
go execute. So he's shown the ability to do that
this spring, which you know, we're happy. So all in
all in, you know, the three preseason games he executed well,
and you know there's still a lot of room for
growth there. You know, it still has room for growth
(03:46):
and a long way to go. And luckily he's in
a room surrounded by veterans that have played in this
league for quite some time, and I think that'll provide
dividends down the road, you know, being around Russell and
Jamis and then as far as Russell, you know, the
leadership has been tremendous from the minute he walked in
the building, not just on offense or in the quarterback room,
but across the entire team. So you know, he's looked
(04:07):
good this this camp. He had a good camp. He's
in good shape and you know, excited to see what
it looks like when we come to the regular season.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
Specifically with Jackson, I know you guys went through an
extensive pre draft process with him and evaluated him once
you got him in the building, training camp, pre season.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I don't see all that stuff.
Speaker 7 (04:24):
Was there anything about him that surprised you either that
you didn't know or was a little bit better than expected.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
With rookie quarterbacks? I would just I would always say
how long it's going to take him to get up
to speed and be able to go out and execute it.
It's it's one thing to be able to learn in
the classroom and regurgitate it, but to go out and
actually execute it and do it quickly and correctly. I
would say, Jackson, you know, impressed me in terms of
not that he couldn't do it or we didn't think
(04:51):
he could, but impressed me in terms of how quick
he was able to pick it up and actually go
execute and play fast. You know, I would say that
was something that was you don't typically see with rookie
quarterbacks at times, and he was able to do that.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
He was able to do that.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
The change you think about the timeline or the plan
for him.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
I think Daves has said it a million times rusted
our quarterback. So that's what we're rolling with and the
timeline will be the timeline. However it works out.
Speaker 8 (05:20):
In terms of the ross. I mean, as you guys
have built in Brandon, I think was saying it last week,
how it's changed and evolved for you guys from year
one to year two and now you know, obviously this
year with the roster and roster building, did you go
into this period now with a different feeling than maybe
you had a year ago or two years ago about
(05:41):
where you're at, what positions you were strong at week
at and really attack it differently than maybe you would
have in the past.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yeah, every year it's evolving, There's there's turnover in the roster,
and it takes time to build it. And that's just
the reality of this situation. I would say one of
the things that Daves and I tried to do early
on it just hard it takes time, is we talk
about leadership in every room and when we go through
our personnel meetings and where we are now with some
of the recent off season acquisitions, plus maybe some of
(06:11):
the guys that we're here or you know, a guy
a year or two ago, you know, We've finally been
able to add leadership in every room, and we feel
good about the team leadership. And I think that's showed
throughout the spring in training camp, the leadership some of
the veterans that we have, some of our own that
have grown into leaders. I would say that's one of
(06:32):
the bigger differences that I felt throughout this offseason. But
you know, it takes time to do that because sometimes
good players that are leaders cost a lot of money,
and maybe you don't have the financial resources. Then you're
a young team and you know, trying to surround them
with people that can can teach them how to lead,
but maybe they're not starting so it's hard for them
to learn now. But they got leadership. So it's a
(06:52):
little complicated, but it's we feel good about the leadership
that we have now, some of the pieces that we've
added this offseason and some previous pieces that we're here before,
and you know, talent wise, again, we'll see. We got
to go out and do it. Like Dave said, you know,
we like the roster, we like the chemistry, we like
the leadership. Now we got to go out and do it.
On Sundays, you come into a new.
Speaker 9 (07:12):
Team Obviously you inherit a bunch of players, right, you know,
you change some, but you can't change all. This is
your fourth roster. Now when you look at this whole group,
do you say this is what I envision the team
should be? You know, I mean not that it's a
perfect team, but is it more your vision of what
you want a roster to be in your fourth year
as opposed to when we first started.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, we'll see. Like I was just saying on arts question,
I like the team. I like the chemistry, I like
the leadership. We had a good training camp, we had
a good spring. Now we're two weeks away. We have
to go out and do it. So do I like
the team? Yes? I like the chemistry. I feel like
we've been executing. We've had good practice. The guys have
done done a good job through camp. That's been really
(07:54):
good competition. And now we're just time to go out
and do it.
Speaker 9 (07:58):
Not even just like you like it and you know,
we'll see how we do. But as far as the
way it's made up, you know, edge rushers, more depth
on the offensive line. You know, you you this is
the way you put it together. In a veteran quarterback
rookie quarterback. Is that you know, does a GM have
a vision for what he kind of wants and is
this more of the vision than it has been before.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, And when you're in the roster construction, everybody's gonna
have a different role. You're gonna have your starters, You're
gonna have your backups, You're gonna have guys that are
here for special teams, returner, you know, whatever. It may be.
Core core four guys as a debt player. So you know,
we just asked our guys to you know, understand their
role and execute it the best they can. And you
wish you could have fifty three Pro bowlers that you're
probably not. So those guys that have roles, they need
(08:40):
to accept their role, you know, be good team players
and go out and exec execute their role the best
they can. So again, I like the guys we have,
you know, I like where we are as a team,
and I'm excited to see what we do.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
You know in Washington, you did I say something about
the talent level that you had some really hard to
see us to make this training point.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever been in the league
where it has been a tough cut again I've said
this multiple times. Every player puts so much into it
to try to be on a roster. And you know,
roughly twelve hundred guys you know, are out of a job,
come cut down day and you bring you know, call
it five eighty six hundred back, whatever that may be.
(09:24):
That means over six hundred and fifty guys are out
of the league right now. So every year is tough
relative to releasing players. And then you get some you know,
some back on a practice squad, which now you have
more numbers to do that. And really the way we
envision a practice squad is you're you're part of You're
part of the New York Giants. You're on the team.
You know, the way it works now it's you need
(09:46):
those guys. So you know, we're putting that together. Feel
good about that as well, and just look forward to
getting out there to practice today. You know, these last
couple of days are you know, they're always kind of
tough days. There's you know, that's why we did a
walk through and some of the other stuff just to
get through it. And now we're back the guys that
we've signed or are signing right now on the practice
(10:07):
squad will be out there get back to normal.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
It's a long break from the last time you played
a preseason game, and for the frontline starters, it's even longer.
You know leading up to week one? Do you have
to do anything special to to sort of keep guys
sharp during that linky breaks.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Where they get a certain amount of days off. So
we've been practicing hard. I'll have a full pad of
practice today. I'll have a full pad of practice next week.
That's why would you train all the off season training,
training camp, and it's getting to be ready to be
the start of the season summer.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Next thing you know, it's over. What did you learn
about this group throughout the summer that you've sailed. I
know each group is like different every year, So what
did you learn about this specific group?
Speaker 1 (11:00):
I would go back to arts question on just the
leadership and the continuity and just it started in the spring.
I would say, you know, even a guy like Brian Burns,
you know from last year to this year, the jump
he's make and he's been a tremendous leader this offseason.
And again some of the off season acquisitions that we
brought in Russ and Jamis and Roy Robertson, Harris and
Holland and Paulson and true pros, true pros that you
(11:22):
know have the DNA that we look for and cove it.
And you know, again the camaraderie, guys that love ball,
guys that hold each other accountable, you know, staying after
doing the extra. So I really like where they are
right now, the way they're approaching the season, and just
the true, true aspect of the team field that we have.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
What made you come to the conclusion like that's what
you needed? Like was there a point or anything that
specific that you saw it said, you know, that's something
we need to address this offseason.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
We're always looking for that. We've been looking for that,
and we're always going to look for it. You know,
we brought in Bobby ol Caric a couple of years ago.
He's got leadership. You know, we brought in Greg van Rotin.
You know, he's got leadership. So it's not like we
John Onion, you know, Devin Singletary, like these guys are
like that. We just we've been able to acquire more
and more and more guys that you know, have those
traits and qualities that we covet and you know, the
more of those guys you can have that are gonna
(12:12):
do things the right way and are unselfish and you know,
true pros that can be contagious for some of the
young players, and they can elevate everybody that you get.
Those are the two we put in.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
Obviously filling out the practice squad. Now you'll have some
guys out there I would imagine.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yeah, yeah, I was, you know, I took a picture
of it before I came out. I was scrambling. So
if you, if you guys want to, I'm gonna tell
you who's signed back thus far. So Lane Fox, Garcia Ford,
Am I talking to yous? All right? Chapman, Hudson, Riley Kubis,
(13:04):
a mirror, Little Jordan uh Turbo and Dee Williams right
now are the guys that we got back and will
continue to fill out the rest between now and you
know tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
So did you feel like you need a quarterback? You've
got three on the active roster. Of course, do you
need to practice squad quarterback?
Speaker 1 (13:26):
We're just going to go with three for right now.
I think else, what Ifi.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
And Corey Black show you guys this summer that you
know you wanted that earned themselves a spot on on
the roster here.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Yeah, both seventh round picks that had traits and you know,
Corey unfortunately was injured the majority of camp, so uh,
he had a good spring. He showed some traits there
that you know we're excited about. Unfortunately, just injured, you know,
in camp, so you know, we'll see what happens there.
But Fidoni showed up in season games, showed up in camp,
(14:02):
big long, athletic, good hands, improving as a blocker, so
we're excited about him. You saw the catch radius, you know,
soft hands in a couple of those games. So can
also contribute on special teams, so you know, the fourth
down value is important for those guys.
