Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm curious when you signed here, how would your role
explain to you?
Speaker 2 (00:06):
My role was explained to me as there is an
opportunity at the quarterback position, uh that we're looking for
for to getting better at and uh and I signed
up for that because I'm looking forward to getting better
and being my very best self, uh myself. So that's
(00:26):
how it was.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
I didn't I didn't get a clean explanation of of
my role because I played so many different roles already.
I didn't played every role that the quarterback room has
to offer, So I'm ready for anything now.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Obviously, a couple of days later, they signed Russell Wilson.
Was that laid out to you as the possibility at
the time that you signed?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Oh yeah, absolutely. I knew a free agent signing was
gonna was gonna come, or maybe even a draft pick
was was going to come. Uh. But that that's their
business man. My business is tod and today I have
the privilege of finally becoming a giant gotch.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Thank you, Max, Well, Dan.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Patti Drainer, Jamis Hi, how are.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
You hey, Patricia? How are you?
Speaker 3 (01:19):
I'm doing well? Welcome to the Giants. Good to see you.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Thank you so much, happy to be here.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Great, great jamis there's a possibility that you might be
asked to mentor a young quarterback, And I'm just wondering,
when you look back.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
On your own career, what are.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Some of the lessons that you feel you've learned that
you can share with a young quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
One of the greatest experiences that I had in my
interfer career was the chance to spend one year with
Drew Brees and just peak his mind, watch his actions,
and just be immersed into being an NFL quarterback in
seeing what it looks like to the highest degree. And
(02:03):
one thing that he always exhibited was consistency. He was
at the same place every single time of the day.
Another thing that he exemplified was resilience. He didn't let
anything get in the way of his preparation, in the
way of his approach. And the other thing was he
(02:25):
kept it simple. He didn't think too much about the
big things. He focused on doing small things over and
over again. That resulted in him having the success that
he had for his entire career. So me having that
experience being in rooms with great veteran quarterbacks such as
Ryan Fitzpatrick being in rooms now quarterbacks with Derek Carr,
(02:52):
Deshaun Watson last year, having a chance to mentor Drian
Thomas Robinson when he had a chance to to get
back in his star and role with the Cleveland Browns.
I've been able to learn so many different things from
my time my career, So cateringto a young quarterback and
serving them, uh, would be something that I would definitely
(03:15):
take home with a great responsibility in chaeriship.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Doesn't make it feel old, of course right now.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I know I'm still young, and I know my capabilities
are very are very good as well, So leading by
example would be a good way to lead a young
quarterback as well.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Thank you, Ryan Dunleavy, jamis welcome.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Thanks for doing this. What's up?
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Ryan?
Speaker 4 (03:48):
That's up?
Speaker 1 (03:49):
So obviously everybody knows you've developed quite a big personality
in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
You know you're a social media star.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Is that part of the entry that brought you to
New York and you know the entertainment capital of America here?
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Well, I just think I don't believe in coincidences, and
the interest that brought me to New York was the
fact that there was a quarterback room that they were
looking to get better and making the difference in and
I saw that window opportunity open. But just the fact
that the Big Apple is the biggest city in the
world with the greatest fans in the world as well
(04:28):
to create some popular larity that didn't hurt, you know.
So I'm definitely grateful for what this city brings, but
I'm definitely focusing on what I can do to help
uplift this team from the quarterback position.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
I'm curious because when the free agency started, I was
going through and I was penciling in free agents who
could be starters in different teams that needed starters, And
I thought you'd be looking for a starting job.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Did you look for that and not find it?
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Like?
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Why were you willing to sign up for a backup job?
Where jamis?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I think you know this, if they were to pick
a quarterback at three, you could end up being third
on the depth chart when you're an obviously capable of
being a starter. Why how did you look at that?
You know, one through three on a depth chart.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yeah, my initial vision with approaching this offseason was to
find out opportunity that gave me either a starting role
or a bridge opportunity to be the starting quarterback. And
I believe this situation is a situation that it looks
similar whether it's a veteran quarterback that I have to
(05:35):
compete with and help serve and help make better for
this team, or as a young quarterback who's coming in
from college who I have to help get better, who
I have to compete with and serve. This is the NFL.
There's no there in my job requirement at the quarterback position,
(05:56):
there is only one of us. So in that job requirement,
you have to be a to compete and to and
be able to just be your very best self, and
whoever is the best guy gets gets the job. Like
that's just how it works. Since I've been in the NFL.
Uh So, when the Giants opportunity was there, and those
opportunities for being sure starters or and sure bridge opportunities
(06:21):
when there wasn't as plentiful, I looked at this opportunity
as a great one for me to be able to
come in and have that starter bridge opportunity uh in
the future.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Thank you, Thank you, Tom rock Jamis, what do you
what do you know about Dabel?
Speaker 2 (06:41):
What do you what do you know about the coaching
staff and the roster that you're a part of them. Well,
I've always in my Brian Dabele back when he was
with the Patriots, I really love. I got more familiar
with him when I saw the reigning the leads raining
M v P. Josh Allen have a tremendous jump from
(07:05):
year one to year two. So I saw a coordinator
or a play caller that was very creative, that that
found ways to cater to his quarterback strengths, to find
ways to get his position players involved, and found ways
to take off a lot of excess work from our
(07:26):
offensive linement by getting the ball out quickly and trying
to find ways to establish the running game. So that's
something that I've always married about him. But when I
got to really understand his upbringing, where he comes from,
uh and what he was about coming from Buffalo, New York,
hard nosed, gritty, raised by his grandparents, that's something that
(07:48):
I kind of I definitely was familiar to with because
I was raised by my grandmother as well. So that's
just that that that similarity brought me even closer to
him as the man that he is. And I always
respected the coach that he was because obviously he's won
a lot of Super Bowls and he's made a lot
(08:09):
of athletes and quarterbacks a lot of money and had
a lot of success.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
And how about the players, the receivers in particular.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Uh, well he's he's coached a lot of different receivers
and tight ends.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but the Giants receivers like the league.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
And yeah, well you have you have a young superstar,
two young superstars, three young superstars in my in my
and from from the tape that I've seen what I've
watched in Malik run Dell uh and Theo and an
emerging superstar in uh in in Jalen Hyert Uh. And
you have a crafty veteran who's just always showed up
(08:47):
and done the right thing at the right time and
always finds a way to get behind the defense. And
there Slayton. So I think that was a key uh
get back for this for this organization, for this team,
and getting Darius back. You got a veteran running back
and Devin Singletary uh and a young running back that
can do things out of the backfield and Tracy So
(09:07):
I'm excited what this offense has has to offer. You
got a left tackle that's coming back from injury. But uh,
playing the offensive line, were in the trenches, you're gonna
get banged up sometimes. So I heard that Andrew is
very tough. I love getting a chance to spend some
time with GVR, knowing his his veteran background, knowing how
much impact that he has on this offensive line, uh
(09:29):
in general. Uh, and I look forward to connecting with
the other young guys and just seeing what we what
we can be as an offense. Man. I promise you
that we're gonna find a way to make some things
happen and get some wins. And I think that's the
most important thing that everybody appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Thanks, we'll take three more. We'll start with Mike Garrifolo. Hey,
jamis enjoyed your interview with the Iguana recently.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
Hopefully our questions here as good as those you you
had for him.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
What's your relationship like with Russell Wilson.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
You guys have been in the league for a while together,
and uh have you have you talked to him?
Speaker 4 (10:08):
Think you did?
Speaker 2 (10:09):
You agreed?
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Hey, Mike is good to good to see you, you know,
with the Palm Tree he's blowing in the background and
you just vibeing. Man. It's very not often did I
get to see you on a on a on a
on a iPad. You know, I typically see you on
TV man, So hey, good, good to see you, bro.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
But now my relationship with Russ is is good man,
russ Man. A lot of people don't notice. He was
one of the quarterbacks that allowed me to, uh take
a look into how he ran, you know, russ ran
his enterprise, ran his businesses, how he took care of
his body, how how he trained, uh, and what did
he what did he do to go into like his
mental approach. Russe and I had a very close friend
(10:48):
who's no longer with us, and Trevor Moroat, so we
were we were a lot closer, uh when when Trevor
was still with us, but Trevor uh And I think
Russell Russell speak on this like he instilled a lot
of great traits into both of us, and we continue
to use those traits, especially those traits in our leadership
(11:08):
and our commitment to football. So that's where we have
a similar background in terms like our mental approach can
be very similar because one of our mental coaches was
definitely life changing for him and very influential with me
as well. Thank you, mag congrat I appreciate you. See
(11:29):
you soon.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Mike.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Carol sens to me, welcome to New York.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Said, hello, how are you doing, Charlotte?
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Good? We asrussed us.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
But I'm curious when you're looking at teams and you
mentioned started bridge, But why what appealed to you about
joining up.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Fourteen team? And why do you think this team is
going a place to succeed?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Like you Well, the biggest thing when you join a
team that went three and fourteen, you gotta look at
it like this. Uh, the NFL is a business of
what have you done for me lately? In any team
that has that back against the wall, you know that
the coaches, the executives, the fans, they are looking for
(12:15):
immediate change. And I feel like in my time in
terms of my process of joining a team, I'm looking
for immediate change because it's required, it's required to start
winning for me in an NFL, it's required for this
organization to start winning, you know, so we can have
more more, more giggles, more laughter, more fun in this
(12:37):
in this building, like we're in the biggest city of
the world. We should enjoy that, uh And I think
winning does that. So when it comes to looking at
their record, I didn't. I didn't look at this team
being a three and fourteen team. I looked at what
it was possible. And what I saw was possible is
an offense that can execute efficiently and that can be explosive.
I saw a defense with an incredible front, and I
(12:59):
saw this season of them adding passing the depot in
Javon Holland in the back end to create some noise
to help that front get home. And I just figured
that the Giants, man, they don't look like a three
and fourteen team from the talks of you know, people
talking about I know Kaeva, I know Byron a little
bit in decks, like from from their talks and their conversations,
(13:22):
like the locker room, didn't seem like it was a
three and fourteen team. So this team is looking for
a complete paradigm shift. This team is looking to make
a splash, man, and it's no better, no better place
to do it, with no greater calling to do it
than right here in New York City being a New
York Football giant.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Last one with Jordan renand Hey, Jamis fucking man, Hey,
what's up?
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Joy?
Speaker 4 (13:50):
That much?
Speaker 5 (13:51):
We all obviously saw you, you know as safe fund
where you were, you know where you should go? And
he said the Giants And now that sense of where
you ended up. I'm wondering how much did you look
into it after that? And like did you talk did
you talk to any of the guys that you mentioned before?
And what was the process like for you, Like what
other teams were. Was there a bunch of other teams
interested you had to choose them over somebody else?
Speaker 4 (14:13):
How did that all pan out?
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah, the the process was as fresh as it was
of me asking Saquon where should I go? You know,
Like I said, I don't believe in coincidences, but when
he threw the Giants out there, it really gave me
and my team and looked like, hmm, like what they
doing over there? You know, what is their vision? And
to pursue the Giants and c Like, I'm not saying
that I should behind Saquon as my agent, but what
(14:36):
I am saying is that he has good decisions, you know,
and obviously with him coming off the Super Bowl, his
connection to New York, I'm pretty sure the fans aren't happy,
But I'm pretty sure what he said about the fans
enjoying me, I think they gave them a little bit
more excitement. So this free agency process is different every
single year. Obviously, with Aaron and Russ holding up the
(14:59):
mar market for the beginning of the free agency, it
was it was stuck. It was tough. A lot of
teams UH had committed committed to them, had their hopes
and dreams of of getting those two guys or other
guys in the future. UH. This team was one of
the few teams UH that that gave me an opportunity,
that wanted to have me in, wanted me to UH
to see the building, wanted me to connect with COACHBA,
(15:23):
Coach Dabele and UH and just see what the giants
were all about U. And I took that UH to
heart and UH and I'm happy that say Quon put
that energy in the air for me to come to UH,
to the big city, to the big Apple and be
a g man.
