Speaker 1 (00:00):
Just curious.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Dave just told us that he had asked you and
Jamis to get up in front of the offense this morning,
and just kind of I don't know if you need
to introduce yourself at all, but just in terms of
when you look at a day like this, you're.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Coming to a new team, What's what do you want
to get out of this? You know, obviously you're not.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
On the field yet, but I'm just curious from a
personality aspect, from your experience, what are you trying to.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Get out of a day like today. I mean, I'm not.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Sure if it's a first impression for everybody, but certainly
being here it's a start of something different.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah. Well, first of all, I think that, you know,
it's exciting to be here obviously, to have the guys,
you know, sharing the locker room, to be able to
be in the team meeting room with the guys at
the QB room, just be on the field with the
guys getting work and you know, being in the weight
room and all that stuff that makes it exciting that
we're playing ball again, and you know, and that part
I love, you know, and and Dave's ran a great
(00:55):
meeting today, just you know, you introduce everybody and from
the coaches to everybody else, some of the new players
as well, obviously us being me being one of them,
and just to be able to go up there and
just talk to the guys about, you know, kind of
where I come from and just my story a little
bit and just the focus of it all and what
we want to accomplish, uh, individually, but also this year.
So I'm excited to be with these guys. Man, I'm
(01:16):
excited to have the opportunity to play and be a
New York Giant. What what opportunity is and and we
can make it really special. And I think we have
the right guys. A lot of hard work guys are
focused on the details of it all and excited, like
I said, excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Hey Russ, thanks for doing this.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, no problem.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Two for you? Who did you get to throw with?
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Since the last time we talked about following you on
Instagram it looked like Bellinger some of the receivers.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Who did who? Which of your targets did you were
you able to corral?
Speaker 3 (01:55):
And uh?
Speaker 4 (01:57):
And how did those all come about?
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Was that your initiative?
Speaker 5 (02:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
A bunch of the tight ends, A bunch of the receivers,
you know, uh, you know, a bunch of guys. Man
really got a lot of extra work. You know, we're
able to throw in San Diego some you know, I
you know, to be able to throw in Atlanta too.
Flew to Atlanta and just different guys that I was
able to throw with back and forth in San Diego
and atl It was a lot of fun. You know,
we just got a lot of work in I think
what's exciting is is just we got to pluf throw
(02:23):
a guys that can really make a lot of plays.
And you know, obviously you know our star receiver Molik
and what he's capable of too. You know one dell
and and you know his ability to make plays. I
think Darius Slayton is a star too as well. Obviously
he's been experienced VET. You know, guys like Bellinger who's
really really talented tight end, and THEO and you know,
(02:45):
you know, guys like Dultcic I think are really good players.
I can run. I played with him in Denver, you know,
and I know what he's capable of, you know, and
just so many other guys, you know, Jalen Hyatt just
you know, I think that he's gonna have a great
year this year. And excited about the people. Excited about
the guys. You know, they they love football, they love
the work, they want to be great. Guys I've played
(03:07):
with before in the past, two that I know, you know,
guys like LJ and just other people you know. Just
so I'm excited for the opportunity to just to be
able to play with these guys because of their ability.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
And then off the path a little bit, are you
going to be a regular at MSG this spring? And
do you know, do you know Brunson and any of
those guys we saw the like big Bro hug you
got after Game one.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, I've got to know Brunson, you know over the
past couple of years. You know, just a talented player. Man,
just got a lot of respect for his game. And
just uh, you know, you know, obviously you get to
meet guys throughout you know, you know Big Cat and
I know him too as well. Just other guys. Heart.
You know, there's a lot of guys that you know,
I'm connected to in some form of fashion. Just you know,
(03:54):
my guy Jay Shack knows them well too as well.
I Just I love sports, I love basketball. I've always
been the guy that admire greatness and to be able
to watch guys go to work every day to see
it up close and personal, and it's always inspirational to
be around it and vice versa. So I'm really close
with those guys, gotting to know them over the years,
and I think now that being in New York, you'd
(04:16):
get to know me even better. But just to be
able to watch them up up close in person and
be the stars they are. That game the other night
was a special.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Man.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
The fourth quarter was really remarkable, and how they came
back and just you know, I think it went on
a twenty one oh run and what an electric crowd
that was. Yeah, thank you?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Sure, hey, Russ, how you doing.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
What's up all?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
They're all good. I want to take your back a
little bit. In his draft season.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Twenty twelve, some scouts said that, you know, if you
were three inches tall, you'd be at the top of
the drafts, right.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
I mean that wasn't the first time you heard that
you were too short? Right? Can you talk about a
little bit about what you remember about your draft process
and about being a third round pick and obviously being
the best of that group that came out easily by far.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeah, you know, I you know, I think for me personally,
I just wanted the opportunity to play, you know, the
opportunity to shine and do what I was able capable
of doing. You know, it was fortunate to be able
to seattle around some great, great players and great teammates
and great coaching staff and everything else. Great culture and atmosphere.
I love playing there, and so you know, I was
(05:28):
very blessed in that way to be surround around you know,
some guys that I'm still forever connected to. Guys in
my draft class too, like guys like Bobby Wagner, guys
like Robert Turbin, and guys that I played going to
college with, guys like j R. Sweezy and and many others,
you know, guys I played against in college like Bruce
Irvson and and we just had a competitive, you know,
(05:48):
uh group, you know, a rookie class. You know, guys
like Jermaine Curse, who was a who was undrafted you know,
free agent, and Deshaun Shed and just many guys that
we were to be great. Obviously the Vets, you know,
obviously the legion of Boom and just different guys I
was able to play with and everything else in Marshawn
And but I think the thing that was we're going
(06:11):
to go back to the actual draft day and that
whole process. I remember, you know, you know, Pete Carroll
Collin and Johns sni or Paul Allen and just the
the excitement and the joy to be able to play
the game. I love uh to to be able to
have the opportunity to do it. Listen, I think you know,
for me, I've always believed that, you know, you have
to work for everything. You know. For me, it was,
(06:33):
you know, I was gonna do everything I could to
be the best that I could possibly be every day
and have a day one mentality. I still have that today.
So that's what I remember most.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Do you think you're a draft guy? I mean, do
you do you know these quarterbacks in this draft? And
do you think any of these guys or do you
follow them? And and and do you think that you
are a proof that if you're not the biggest guy,
you could obviously you're not the biggest guy and you
made it pretty well. Do you think some of.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
These guy should do people say he's too short maybe
a little tall than you, but too short that you know, no, no, just.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Look at me. You can do it.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Yeah, I think that, you know, in any position, it's
really about what you're capable of, you know, I think
the grit that you have, the mentality, the ability, the winning,
the winning habits that you have, you know, all those
things are critical, you know, the it factor, you know,
the ability to change the room, the ability to elevate others,
to make them be their best, no matter what position
(07:28):
you play. And so for me, you know, I just
I knew that God to give me a gift to lead,
got to give me a gift to throw a ball
really long ways and drop it in a bucket and
throw it up to the moon and let it fall down,
I guess, you know, and just certain things that I
was able to do. And and so you know, for me,
every day, I'm just grateful for the opportunity that I've
(07:48):
had and just to be able to inspire others. You know,
there weren't many short quarterbacks in the National Football League,
and there weren't many you know, guys at the time
that were you know, you know, dual threats. At the time.
There was guys I can and there's guys that Colin
Kaepernick and Tyrod and a couple others really, but that
was really it at the time. And so for me,
(08:09):
I just wanted to be able to, you know, change
the narrative. And I think it's definitely changed along the way.
And there's many many guys before me that able to
do that for me and crack the door open too.
And so I was fortunate to be able to win
the Super Bowl, and you know, to you know, I
take pride in that, you know, to be able to
win a super Bowl, to be the first you know,
guy kind of mobile guy like that, I think, you know,
(08:31):
but you know, shorter mobile guys should say. And then
I think also too, to be an African American guy,
the second black quarterback to ever win, it was something significant.
So I always have fun thinking about that. You know,
just a lot of amazing memories. And we've got to
go and make more. Yep, we'll take three more.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Hi Ross, how are.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
You, hey, Patty? How you doing?
Speaker 1 (08:52):
I'm doing well? Thanks for asking, Yeah, for sure, us.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
I know you're not that far removed for being a
young quarterback, but over your experience, what has been the
biggest transition, other than maybe learning the language, the ways
of the team. What's the biggest transition, the hardest transition
for a young quarterback.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
To pick up.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, the hardest thing is the speed of the game
and the talent of the players around you. I think,
you know, I was able to play in the ACC
with the really good talented teams, and you know, it's
playing against some of the world's best guys like Luke
Keikley and you know, you know, Hall of Fame player.
I got to go in these guys from Florida State
and Clemson and just different you know, all time you
know players. But you know, I think the thing is
(09:33):
is that the game was super fast then, but you
go to the National footbleagu's even faster. You're getting you're
getting everybody's best. You know, you're getting the best best
player in the ACC, getting the best best player in
the SEC in college. And then you're getting the experience
of the veterans that are the all time greats, you know,
from wherever they come from. So the speed of the
game I think is the biggest thing for guys. And
(09:55):
you know, the question is can guys adjust whether you
play receiver, quarterback, running back, defense, doesn't matter what position
you play. It's like, you know, you got to be
able to adjust the game. I think I was fortunate
because I got to go against some of the best
players in the world every day, and that was that
was always great to just be have that competitive edge.
Speaker 6 (10:10):
Do you think it helps a young quarterback if he's
played in multiple systems for multiple teams.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
In college or pros? What do you mean?
Speaker 6 (10:21):
Well, both, well, college I'm specifically talking about.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
I mean, possibly, it just depends, you know. I think
I think it depends, And I think it's all about,
you know, the guy's attitude to learn, you know, and
all that. I think that that that affects everything, and
the guy's ability to to learn quickly on the move
and adjust and to be put into successful positions but
also get get the team out of out of tough
positions as well. And I think the thing about quarterback
(10:46):
is you got to have the the the you know,
the ability to win win games late and often. And
I think that's really the name of the game most
of the time. Yeah, thank you, Hey, Russ, you doing brother?
You prefer Russ or Russell, It doesn't matter all the above.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
Okay, I'm curious how important do you view the process
of going through the spring, getting those extra throws with guys,
Like how important is that for you to get the
chemistry built up? And do you feel like it's this
short amount of time or you're trying to crunch it
in or is it you know up until the start.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Of the season. Is that Yeah? I mean, I think
like anything and those those extra reps though, the time
under tension is everything. I think. You know a lot
of times, you know, you get into sports and you
you know, the guys that can spend more time going
full speed, getting the reps, getting the time, you know,
spending time in the off season, spending time when you
(11:49):
know there's nobody watching those moments, those those relationships, you know,
going to dinner and talking, chopping it up. That team
bonding is everything and it just clicks on the field
that way. I think it just makes everything smooth and
transitioned well. And I think we're doing a great job
of that. I think we're head of schedule on that.
I'm really excited about the guys we have and who
they are, their work ethic, their mentality, their character, their
(12:10):
their their their ability to love the game, uh, what
they want to do in the community, all the different
things that the guys that we have on this team,
and uh, you know, I think that's it's it's a
great opportunity to really you know, do well and forgot
for us all to just shine and we got to
work for it. Though there's no there's no magic pill
besides the work. You know, we got to put the
(12:31):
work in. You gotta love it, you got to be it,
you know, have that attention to detail. And we're excited
about that opportunity to do that.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
And I know there's like two stypes of things that
are going on right now, right that you guys are here,
you're starting to prepare, you're starting to work out. The
flip side of the team is also still juggling the draft.
Have they talked to you about that, like, do you know,
do you know any of these prospects personally.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Or they have? Have they talked to about any of
them at all?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
No, I mean, we don't go into all that stuff
all the time. And I think the biggest thing is
is that, man, we're excited about having an opportunity to
drafts extremely good talent and you know, to help our
football team get better every day. You know. I think
that's the best thing about the drafts is you get
young talent and and hopefully that those guys can add
to the team, you know, and just really be significant
(13:14):
playmakers for us and and to you know, you know,
change the environment on the field every day, you know.
I think that's the thing from practice, the games and
those that those level of players, you know, I mean,
sometimes they're early, sometimes they're late. Sometimes you find them,
uh through the free agency, you know, you know, I
play a lot of great guys that you may find
(13:34):
in the fifth, sixth round that are game changers and
play the longest in their careers. They may play fifteen years,
you know, you know, so hopefully we can find some
dark horses too along the way.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
That's one.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Evan Barnes.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Russ, How you doing good man?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
How you doing good?
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Good? All right?
Speaker 5 (13:55):
You kind of mentioned you're time with the Legion of
Boom a little bit. You got a young defense on
the other side of your ball here. I'm just curious,
how excited you to kind of see them grow and develop.
There's a lot of young guys like a Devo hollering
those guys. How excited you to see kind of this
young group grow and just kind of watch them from
the other side of the ball as they gelled together
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Yeah, I mean I think I think first of all,
every great defense starts with a defensive line. I think
our defensive line is one of the best of the
National Football League. You know, the opportunity to add more
guys and everything else, but just the ability for guys
to get to the quarterback. I mean that's the name
of the game. You know, who can stop the run,
who can get to the quarterback? And I think that's
the reality of it. I think the linebackers that we have,
(14:37):
you know, the best in the game, guys that can
fly around really get to the you know, to the
stopping the you know, the ball carriers from getting plus yardage.
I think our secondary and additions that we've had too.
I know, I was just joking with Holland in the
locker room. Yeah, because we played and he knocked out
like two balls you know, back in the day, punched
out too from you know in the game. You know,
(14:58):
receivers are catching them and just running down the field
and I think a running back maybe and just he
knocked two wild and just he's a talented guy, you know,
Holland is you know, I think he's made a lot
of plays. We're excited to have him on the team,
you know, I think just the additions that we've had.
I think also the guys that we already have. You know,
I know Tay Banks is a young, young, you know,
talented guy, and I think he's really looking forward to
(15:20):
this year and rising up to to the to the
occasion in a great way. And so it just takes
a team effort. I think the great thing about this game,
it takes all eleven on offense, takes all eleven on defense,
six all eleven on special teams, and the most important
part of the off season is the bond and the
relationships and how fast can we put all those pieces
together in an effective way to be as effective as
(15:41):
possible come come Sundays. And I think we have an
opportunity to do that. I think coach Dave Balls a
tremendous leader, tremendous communicator. He was great in the team
meeting today, just as he's very inspirational, very clear message
and what we want to do and how we want
to get there. And I'm so excited about the opportunity
to play and just do what we love to do.
