Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, everybody, Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a bonus episode
of Long Story Short the podcast. I'm Megan, I'm Wendy,
and today's episode is our thoughts on Curious cater Dying
for Chocolate from Hallmarks Movies and Mysteries Channel, part of
their Spring Fling lineup. No, that's that was last year

(00:32):
Springing to Love, Springing to Love. Yeah, do you think again?
We've had their trying to get viewers over on movies
and mysteries and that's why they put it Andrew Walker
movie over there. Well, I'm sure yes. However, these mysteries

(00:53):
movies are often turned into series, like there's the Aurora
ty Guarden Mysteries starring CCB, so it's not unusual for
them get big names over there. Sure. I mean it
is different than the Tyler Hines movie from last week,
like that was obviously not any sort of mystery type movie. Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
that was like a legit, regular Homemark Channel movie that

(01:15):
they put over there. But that happens. You know during
the holidays, we get regular Christmas movies on Movies and Mysteries,
so it's movies and mystery. Yes, I get it. I
was just asking. Yeah, yeah, I hear. Yeah, I don't

(01:35):
know their motivation. All right. Before we move on, now,
we gotta tell the listeners that we have an awesome
new Hallmark only Facebook group. Yeah, tell them it's popping
over there. We've got a nice little handful of people
who know their stuff about Hallmark movies. Yeah, and they
tell us what's what? Man? Yeah, I'm here for it.
It's cool. You could search girls Gone Hallmark and Facebook.

(01:58):
We're a private group. You have to request to be
in it, but we'll let you. We'll let you in. Yeah,
it's fun. Agree, We would love to have you join
us over there. Uh, let's start off with a synopsis
of Curious Caterer. All right, A single mom who's thrust
into the role of town sleuth to help solve a

(02:20):
friend's mystery death. Stars Nikki Deloche and Andrew Walker. Is
she thrust into the role of town sleuth or does
she jump in feats? Seriously? Seriously, I gotta say, like,
I enjoy Nikki Deloche. Oh, she's new to me. Like,
I don't think I watched a new movie from her

(02:41):
last year. It was where she used to ride horses.
I can't remember. I know your Friday my Lights was
in it. Loved her jacket, yeah, yes, yes, and her
sister worked in the barn yeah, at a desk anyway,
I liked her. I like her, I like her yeah.
Twenty twenty countdown to Christmas. She was in a movie

(03:03):
called A Cranbery Christmas that I liked very much. So
I like Nikki DeLoach. Also, you know, I love Andrew Walker,
and I do love and he's like a like a
top one two for me. God is so easy to
look at and he don't like this scruff and I
just wanted to like touch his face. God is so hot,

(03:23):
so zeaking of Andrew Walker. He hopes this will turn
into a series. And you know why I think that
could happen. Why because two reasons. One, Hallmark is a
know onne for turning their mysteries into series. We've got,
as mentioned, the Aurora t Garden Mysteries. I absolutely cannot
access the names. I feel like the dude from Desperate

(03:43):
Housewives has a series, Jesse something or other. We have
Crossword Mysteries, which stars Lacey Shavert like regularly or is
that has that ended? I think it has ended. Martha's
Vineyard Mystery, I mysteries I believe is the Jesse Metcalf
mystery series. There's also Hannah s Wentzon Mystery starring Alex Sweet.

(04:06):
What I'm saying is Hallmark likes a mystery series and
this lends itself to that because this movie is based
on the Culinary Mystery series, which is seventeen books written
by Diane Mount Davidson. So they could go next to
Serial Killer with like C A R E A indeed,

(04:27):
I'm spelling it wrong, well cereal like frut loops guys, Yes, precisely.
This is Andrew Walker's fourth movie with Nikki Delouch. Really, Yeah,
they've got great chemistry together. Wow. Yeah, I think so too.
I think so too. Okay. Obviously filmed in the British
Columbia area, including Vancouver. And I read that Andrew Walker

(04:53):
said he studied detective shows like True Detective from HBO
and Mayor of east Mayor of east Yeah. Do I
love so much that he included Mayor of Eastown because
that means he's studying like the Kate Winslet detective. Yeah
makes me happy. Yeah, I thought he had some real

(05:14):
detectivey like vibes totally like very short, m kind of grumpy,
little superior. Yeah, I thought it. I thought you played
it well. One hundred percent agree, I thought you played
it well. This movie also features Lachlan Monroe. He plays

(05:35):
Richard Korman, Goldie's ex husband, And if he looks familiar
to you, that's because he has two hundred fifty five
IMDb acting credits. That is the most I've ever seen
in my tenure as a Girl's Got Hollwark reviewer. To me,
a lot is in the hundreds. So he has been
in a number of things. You might recognize him from Riverdale.

(05:57):
I recognized him from Date my Dad. Indeed, he was
in Date my Dad as well. That was a real
deep cut. I'm impressed because he's only in the pilot
of that show. Really. Oh that's crazy. Megan and I
A little backstory here. We used to do a Facebook
live on Friday nights prior to the premiere Update my Dad,
which was on up TV. Yeah, up TV, And I

(06:20):
need to interject and say that we were contracted to
do that by up TV or just like popping on
and letting you know our thoughts on this show that
didn't last very long, No, only one season. It was
it was all right, It was a fun experience. Yes, sure,
it's great anyway, it's funny. A lot of date my
Dad actors and actresses show up in all these Homewark movies.

(06:43):
That is where our love of Matti Finocchio began. M hmmm,
and are just like as Cindy Busby. Sorry, Cindy. That's
all I have other than it wrapped filming on my
birthday March fifth. Ah, look at that. March fifth was
nearly a month ago. Yeah, quick, quick, quick, wow crazy
edit edit edit, Okay, what was your first impression of

(07:06):
curious caterer all that flirting for a pat on the
shoulder at the end. I have something to say about
that too. Later I got to say, I was like,
this is how it ends, Like I thought they were
gonna smooch in that. I was expecting a smooch like
I've never watched like a Hallmark movies and mystery movie. Huh.

(07:27):
And I was like this is My mind was blowing,
like this does not follow the same cookie cutter recipe. Yeah.
I actually rewound the end thinking did I miss it?
Because she watches him walk away, and all of a sudden,
I look down and I met an hour fifty nine
and I realized this is actually the end. Yeah. My

(07:50):
first impression is this was really fun more mysteries please,
I got it. Agree, I was like, oh my god,
it kind of like, so, what did you like about
this movie? This is a good segue. I gotta say, like,
I really liked the story mostly. It was definitely different

(08:11):
than any other movie that we watch on the Homework Channel,
like in terms of like being a mystery. Yeah, because
we haven't delved into the mysteries before, right, Yeah, And
I thought like it skewed more Lifetime, but it was
a little less gritty than Lifetime. Huh. Agree, I was
into it. I thought this was really funny in a campy,

(08:35):
silly way. It did not take itself too seriously. The
writing was fun. I thought Nikki Diloch and Andrew Walker
played really well on each other. And you know, just
the way she kind of gets in the way a
little bit. It gave me enough mystery that I kept wondering, like,
who done it? Like I couldn't figure it out, Like

(08:56):
I didn't know. I kept suspecting it was like the
her friend, the yes, dark haired I don't even know
what the girl's name was, but she was always in
the kitchen. Uh huh yeah, and then they find out
that they poisoned the shortbread and she was sitting there
with the short brand all alone, all alone. I thought

(09:17):
the food shots looked really good, and I was like,
is this a Giata Dala Renis joint here? You know
what I mean? Like, because she did The Love of
More last week? Right, yeah, I can whatever her production
company did that movie, and I thought the food looked
really great in that movie. I thought the food looked
really good in this movie too. She was like pattering

(09:39):
the begnets and the doing the chocolate, and I have
something to say about the chocolate later, but I thought
most of the food at that banquet looked fantastic. Yes, yes, yes, yes, okay,
all right. Finally, I couldn't believe that doctor Gentle pulled
out a gun. I was like, I was like, oh,
like seriously gassed while I was watching, because I did

(10:00):
not expect that from a Hallmark movie. Well, and I
loved how they opened with the penultimate scene of her
running through the woods, and then they flashed back for
days and then we get back to that scene. It's
just so different if you are used to watching the
Love Story Hallmark movie. Yeah, it's such a welcome change. Well, see,
that's what I thought I was watching was a love

(10:22):
story Hallmark movie, yeah, but set to a mystery, and
it wasn't. No. And so there are going to be
people who are listening to this, who are yelling at us,
that are going to be telling us that this is
what the mysteries are like. I have never watched them.
I think I've seen one Aurora t Guarden mystery because
my daughter really likes CCP. But this was the entire
format was new to me, and so not only was

(10:45):
it novel, but it featured actors that I loved and
it was such a nice break from the formula. Now.
I asked in our Hallmark group if people were rooting
for or his name Tim or Tom his name's Tom,
Detective Tom and Goldie, if they were rooting for them

(11:06):
to like get together at the end. Yeah, and some
of the responses. This was one of them from Gene.
She says it's too soon for a romance if this
is gonna be a series. Excellent point. And Rina said
that they have good chemistry as always, Bet she wanted
more conflicts between them, so maybe if the series moves forward,

(11:29):
we'll see a little bit of conflict in number two. Yeah,
I agree, we can't get straight to If we're gonna
have ten movies, I gotta have some tension. Yeah, you
gotta build up to it, right. Yeah. They did a
nice job of laying the backstory we know about both
of their exes. How funny was that scene when he's like,

(11:51):
I used to be married to so and so and
she's like so and so. I thought it was very
funny writing agree. There's a tweet about that line. Her
name's Jessemine, by the way. That's women get married. And
the tweet shows Andrew Walker and Nikki Delouch when he's
revealing that moment to her and she's kind of given

(12:12):
him the side, and the tweet says, when you want
to tell him he married a girl that eight paced
called the teacher mommy and cried to naptime because she
was scared of the dark. But no, you'll hold on
to that one for a little while. That's who wrote it.
His name is Stevie Coolest. Okay, cool cool coolest. Okay.
Let's talk about what we wished for. I don't have
many wished for. No comments, mostly a question in this one,

(12:37):
and it is would a detective really let some non
police person like get so involved in this case? And
he gave her so much insider information? Yes, and he
didn't know enough that she wasn't involved, right, you know,
a true detective brought her on the inside. I mean,
she could just be a total sociopath, total really good

(12:59):
at deflecting information, especially if she knows what you know, right,
And I'm like, hello, the cookies were in the car.
You made the cookies. Maybe you're a suspec lady. Yeah,
She's like, I didn't do that. He goes, I know, right,
I trust you, Okay, you know. Really the only thing

(13:25):
I wished for, and we've talked about it multiple times
already this episode, but I missed the romance. And I
honestly can't believe I'm saying this because we've said many
times in other movies it doesn't always need to end
with the happy ending kiss, we're in a romantic relationship,
and this time I really wanted it to. Yeah, but
I think like him walking away, I mean she did

(13:46):
kind of like I think he patted her on the
shoulder and she like grabbed his hand and then he
walked away, and they show that shot of her like
you know, so, I mean, I think it definitely leaves
the door open, and I think they have an almost
kiss earlier in the movie. I don't recall. They definitely
have some tension, some flortacious moments, but I missed it.

(14:11):
I felt I was left one cheated. I yes, you
were cheated. All right, let's get on to did you
see that? Hey, what the house is back? I told you,
I told you Adele's house. We usually see this as
hotel space, uh huh, but it was also a house
in previous movies we've seen. I don't remember it being

(14:32):
a house. I always remember it being hotel space. It
was a house in one of the Christmas movies. Oh okay,
I am certain of it. But I think it was
a community center at one point. Yeah, I think so too. Yeah,
it's beautiful on the outside the interior shots. There's no
way that's the actual interior of that house because it
looks completely different from everything else we've seen masquerading as

(14:56):
the interior of that house. So I wonder if that's like,
is that just like a whose house is that? I
don't know. I'm so curious, But it was like, oh, look,
there's that house we know. I thought this was really
funny and I laughed out loud in the scene when
Goldie tackles doctor Gentle at the end and she says

(15:19):
to Tom, She's like, I was closer. I thought it
was so funny. But when she tackled him, I thought,
I was like, why would she do that? She is
with a like trained police Why tell you now? Why
didn't he act sooner, like you know before this, Like
where's his gun? That was my next question. He never

(15:40):
had a gun. I didn't see one. I don't I
don't understand. It wasn't real dark on ice cream, But yeah,
I never saw he never like pulled one out. There
was no like duel like he was never like you're
a policy. Are you telling me that a police officer
in the middle of an active murder investigation is not
armed at an event where all of the suspects are
going to be they're armed all the time. Every police

(16:02):
officer I know is always armed. And I don't like that,
but yeah, they're always armed. That when they were in
the like woods or whatever, like when he was when
doctor Gentle was like making Goldie go out in the
words and she's like I had to take my shoe off.
I thought she was going to turn around and whack
them with her heel. Me too. I was like, that's
a good idea, but then she just like elbowed them

(16:23):
and then tell me like, yeah, get them with that
heel in the forehead. Knock it out right. A tweet
from one Kiss Means Forever, says man, this movie has
more suspicious looking characters. In a train on the Orient Express,
I agree. I was like, is it the step son?
Is it the husband of Adele? Was it Adele? Was it? Well?

(16:44):
And here's what I like. I feel like there's so
many unresolved storylines going forward that in a series we
still can get more of what's happening with Adele and
her husband, who I think is an alcoholic. What let's
talk about that scene for a second when they're at
the charity lunch early in the movie. Was he drunk?
Is that why she had to escort him out of there?

(17:05):
She goes, it's eleven thirty in the morning or something.
Uh huh. I thought so. But then they never really
seemed to revisit that storyline, except for the fact that
they are building essentially a treatment center for addiction. Oh
uh huh, but I never saw them revisit it in

(17:26):
terms of Archie's addiction. Yeah, it was Archie an investor.
I don't remember. And I also felt like we had
an unresolved storyline of Adele's ex husband and her son's
father's mysterious death. Yes, so what happened there, I don't know.

(17:46):
It's it leaves the door open for a great some
more storytelling. Here's one funny thing, and I can't remember
his name, but it was the teacher. Oh yes, and
they're coming to the teacher to ask him to be
an investor in this wellness center, like he comes from
money or something. I just thought it was weird first,

(18:10):
like they're like, oh, yeah, let's ask the teacher to
be an investor in this wellness center. I was like,
do they ask him? Speaking of the teacher who's played
by Antonio Cayone, who will be familiar because he was
in a couple of the Evergreen movies, most notably Christmas
and Evergreen Bells Are Ringing, which was a terrible culmination

(18:32):
of that series. It was I feel badly for him
because he got a raw deal in that movie. But
that's another wide open storyline. We have this teacher who
seems to be somewhat beloved. He goes on this date
with Goldie and at one point she seems to suspect

(18:54):
him of being the murderer, so she leaves the date abruptly.
But prior to that, it seemed like, prior to her
suspecting him and going on this date, it seems like
maybe there were some feelings there because they had been
dancing around getting together, and she finally admits she hasn't
been a date in forever, so that seems unresolved. And
we find out that the dead woman is also his

(19:16):
former girlfriend. Yeah, that's that. There's so much happening. Yeah,
can can we talk about Goldiees? Truck says very good
catering gold Yeah, okay, go ahead, Verry good. It's like

(19:39):
a play on words. I know, but you think it
should be Goldie something Goldiees catering Barry. I don't like
Barry as very like. I don't. It feels like like youthful,
like use it for Teddy bears. Oh, okay, a sophisticated
catering operation. Well, speaking of that, I thought that she
looked very unstressed for like she's catering this like brunch

(20:03):
at school. And then she does the party and she's like,
actually not doing any of the work. Oh, we never
see any of her staff never, So who's back there
making this happen? Because when she's at the party, they're like, oh,
it's only the first course. Why is she not back
there making the second course happen? Yeah, I don't know
any that's not how that works. No, They're like, we
would like you to be a guest, and I would

(20:24):
be like, absolutely not, I don't have time for that. Hu.
She's like, sorry, I have my detective hat on tonight.
I am trying to sell this murder. And then Adele
makes her take her apron off. I didn't even realize that, yes,
because doctor Gentle comes over and he's like, I've been
sent by her hostess. Your food's delicious, and please take
your apron off. And he takes her apron from her

(20:44):
because she looks like the staff evident. Oh my gosh,
I don't get it. Okay, interesting, Are you ready to
rate this movie? I am. I have a real star
surger rating here. Okay, three two, one, three and a
half stars. Oh very close. I wrote that I would

(21:05):
definitely watch this as a series. One hundred percent agree.
You gotta get me in on that first one. I'm
not gonna go back and watch the Tea Garden series
now that there's been a bazillion of them. Like now
I saw the first one, I'm invested. Yes, absolutely, gimme more,
gimme more. Next week, we're back to one episode and

(21:26):
it is love classified. The Hallmark community is quite torn
on their thoughts about this movie because Hallmark had the
audacity to feature a same sex couple and you know
what's weird. So did a royal runaway romance? So did
what was the most recent movie with Mattie Finocchio, Oh,
just One Kiss? So did Just One Kiss? Now those

(21:47):
characters aren't in the preview, right, but apparently the Hallmark
community is up in arms. I just think it's so ridiculous,
sit down, so dumb. And I think too because like
those other movies that you mentioned, they were all like
side characters. It wasn't in your face. We're gonna see

(22:10):
some in your face, I think yeah, because they're including
that storyline as part of the teaser. And these are
the children of the main character, Melaura Harden. So yes,
I think they will feature more prominently than those characters.
I'm very excited for this movie. I think the previews
make it look great. Me too. I love Malaura Harden,
me too. So we will be back with our thoughts

(22:33):
on Love Classified next Thursday. In the meantime, hop into
our Facebook group let us know your thoughts on this movie,
and until then, happy watching Everybody go Bye Bye.
