Speaker 1 (00:00):
Did you enjoy seeing Tyler Hines and Hunter King? I
loved it. Made no sense, but I loved it. This
is a Bramble Jam podcast. Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark,
(00:31):
a Hallmark review podcast. I'm Megan and I'm a longtime
Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm a former Hallmark hater. Today
we're discussing Holiday Touchdown, a Bill's Love Story, which originally
aired on Saturday, November twenty second and is currently available
to stream on Hallmark Plus. We are everywhere on social
media as Girls Gone Hallmark. We'd love for you to
(00:53):
follow us on Instagram to keep up with our latest
episodes and four hot takes from us on Threads and
Blue Sky Girls Gone Homemark. Hey, we also have a
Facebook page and a Facebook group. I think we dropped
some pipe and hot news over there a few days
ago about the Beloved The Way Home. If you are unaware,
(01:13):
I think you should definitely check out our Facebook group,
or our Facebook page or even our website, Girls Gone
Homemark dot com. Well, today we're talking a Bill's Love Story.
Let's start with a synopsis. Okay, let me just tell
you it was really long, and so I condensed it Okay,
it's still kind of long. Okay, like the list of
cast in this movie as well, but we'll get to
(01:35):
that in a second. The Quinn's and the de Luca's,
next door neighbors and lifelong members of Bill's Mafia, team
up when Morgan discovers her uncle has been receiving anonymous
Christmas gifts for more than sixty years. Morgan and Gabe
work together to uncover the mysterious benefactor, all while Gabe's
(01:55):
longtime crush on her quietly intensifies and she begins to
see him differently. Two. With Morgan's plan nearly falling apart,
Gabe uses his Buffalo Bill's connection to deliver a heartwarming
surprise that brings both families together for an unforgettable Christmas
Holiday touchdown. A Bill's Love Story was directed by Dustin Reiker.
This marks his thirtieth directing credit. His recent work includes
(02:18):
A Newport Christmas, along with Hallmark titles such as The
Christmas Quest, The Finish Line, and Where Are You Christmas.
The screenplay was written by Vanessa Morano and Danielle Morrow. Vanessa,
known for her role as April Nardini on Gilmore Girls,
makes her writing debut with this film. Danielle, an actor
with credits on multiple Nickelodeon series, is also making her
(02:42):
first screen writing appearance. Holland wrote in stars as Morgan.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
We last saw.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Holland as Katie Minnetti Hanahan in the limited series Holidays.
This movie marks her forty first acting credit. Matthew Didario
stars as Gabe. This is Matthew's first Hallmark project, but
you might recognize him from his long run on the
series Shadow Hunters. Joe Pantaliano plays Morgan's uncle Tommy, with
one hundred sixty three acting credits. His resume runs deep,
(03:10):
including The Last of Us, The Goonies, and The Sopranos.
Tracy Pollen plays Morgan's mom, Joe Anne. She has thirty
two acting credits and is best known for her role
as Ellen Reid on Family Ties, where she starred opposite
her husband of thirty six years, actor Michael J. Fox.
Caroline Aaron plays Gabe's mom Ricky. Caroline is another actor
with an extensive resume. She's best known for her role
(03:33):
as Shirley Maisel on The Marvelous Missus Maizel. Steve Sharipa
plays Gabe's dad, Frank We last saw Steve and Sisterhood
inc From earlier this year. This role marks his eightieth
acting credit. Patty Myrin plays Morgan's sister Kathy. This is
her eleventh acting credit, and you might recognize her from
Homewark roles in Mystic Christmas and in Mary Measure. Patrick
(03:55):
mulvey plays Morgan's brother in law Jeremy. This appears to
be his first project for Homewark, but has in shows
like The Pit in Cis Hawaii and Magnum Pi. Abraham
Ben Ruby reprises his role as Santa Claus, a character
he also played in last year's Holiday Touchdown, A Chief's
Love Story. If he looks familiar, he portrayed Jerry on
Er for one hundred and thirty seven episodes. Eve Gordon
(04:16):
plays long lost love interest Mia, with ninety four acting credits.
She's been in a ten of projects, including Don't Trust
the Bee in Apartment twenty three, Heart of Dixie and
Felicity Ugo. Chuck Wu appears as sal Joey Palestina as Vinnie,
Marian Torres as Trish, and Mary Stout as Cindy Klaus.
(04:37):
This marks the first Hallmark appearance for all four actors.
Andrew Walker appears as bartender at Barbail Tavern. Andrew expressed
that the Bills are his favorite NFL team. Tyler Hines
and Hunter King reprise their roles in a very small cameo.
There are many special appearances for members of the Bills
franchised throughout the movie, and a full list can be
(04:59):
found in our show notes and on our website at
Girls Gone Hallmark dot com. Hey, let's take a quick
break and come right back with our first impression of
a Bill's love Story. Hey, Wendy, what was your first
(05:19):
impression of Holiday Touchdown? Take two? Hey? I think I
accidentally joined Bill's Mafia? Did this movie kind of make
you wish that we had that sort of like sports community. Yes,
like we have plenty of professional sports teams, but it's
not like a community. No. Yeah, No, My first impression
(05:42):
is all hail Keith costumes for his masterful color story
in this movie. Yeah, we didn't mention him in our
about but a friend of the show, Keith Niel, sent
us the costuming for this one. Indeed, let us kick
off with our likes. Well, if I can be so blunt, please,
(06:04):
this was a shockingly delightful watch. Yes, I will. I'll
be honest, last year's version did not do a whole
lot for me, So I went in with kind of
like measured expectations, like very low expectations, and yet I
was very surprised how much I liked this movie.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I have to agree with you.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
When the announcement came out, I was not that excited.
I was frustrated with last year's movie because it got
all of the promo, all of the press, all everywhere.
It was chief this and chiefs that. We haven't really
seen that with this movie so much. I mean, it's
been promoted, but certainly not to the expense of other
movies as far as I can tell. Yeah, but that
(06:46):
also kind of threw up a red flag for me.
I was like, oh, no, what if it's terrible and
that's why they're not promoting it so hard. Sure, I
don't know well, and I think, in my opinion, it
had some things working against it. It had a unknown
to me lead male actor, we had new writers attached.
I just you know, it was the second in a
(07:07):
franchise that I.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Wasn't like super excited about.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
So, like you, I went in with low expectations and
they were swiftly exceeded. So you liked it? Yes, and
what did you like? Speaking of that unknown actor, Matthew
de Dario, who I did not know prior to this movie,
is absolutely delightful and I thought he and Holland Rodent
were adorable together. Okay, let me unpack some stuff here. Okay,
(07:33):
Matthew de Dario, Hello. He gives a little bit of
like Adrian Grenier energy, kind of has the same younger look.
I'm not mad at it. I would gladly watch him
in another Hallmark movie. I really liked him a lot,
a lot, not just I think he looks the part.
It's nice to have like a dark haired kind of
(07:56):
We don't have a lot of dark haired dudes on Hallmark.
I feel like I know people are screaming at me.
I'm sure there are, but often. I actually liked his
acting a lot as well. Mm hmm. Holland I liked
as well too. Let me just say that I'm carrying
some Holland rode In baggage with me from holidaised Oh.
(08:18):
I hated her character so much on Holidays that I'm like,
wasn't excited to see her in this role, but I
very much enjoyed her in this role. Yeah, I've let
the unfortunate Katie Minetti Hanahan disaster.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
I've left that in the past.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
I at times I was like, ooh, that feels the
touch of that character here, like when she would get
a little bit spun up. But overall I.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Enjoyed her well.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Speaking of casting an ensemble, cast is not an easy
thing to do and make it work cohesively. And I
we had a very large ensemble with some very big names,
and I thought they worked incredibly well together, and they
formed a very believable family and family unit mm hmm.
I was particularly enamored with Joey Pants. Whe were you Yes?
(09:12):
I thought he gave a heartfelt and believable portrayal of
her uncle. I liked a lot of their scenes together
Morgan and uncles Tommy Uncle Tommy, particularly the catch scene
they have a little football tossing something. I love that scene.
He tells her having you two in my life changed
(09:34):
it for the better, because she's worried about like, did
we change you know, did we ruin your life? Essentially
by moving in with you and changing the course of
your life, And he says it changed it for the better.
And I loved his line, we worry so much about
what we might lose and not enough about taking a
chance and seeing what we might gain.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah. I thought it was really lovely.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
You know, it's funny because if you remember Tony Dance,
I was supposed to play this role originally, and then
he had to drop out of it and Joey Pants
took it over. I kept wondering, I'm like, how would
Tony Danza be in this role?
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Joey Pants is great?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Yeah, No, I thought he was great too, And I
did enjoy all those scenes. If I can circle back to,
like maybe the storyline that surrounds him this, I like
to call it mystery light.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Yeah, it wasn't.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
It wasn't a mystery, but like you know, Gab and
Morgan are trying to find out who's sending all these gifts.
I was super drawn to this storyline.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
I thought it was interesting. I thought it was compelling.
There was this one scene where they did a flashback,
which I was like, thank you for doing that. Instead
of just like telling us the story, we got to
see a flashback. I thought that was super done well overall,
color me stunned, but I thought the script was pretty
(10:53):
damn good. I did too, and I didn't feel like
we were It felt like we did justice to these
individuals stories.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
That we were weaving.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
The main story is kind of like a cross between
Gabe and Morgan's love story and then the Uncle Tommy mystery.
We have all these other small storylines. We have the
pregnant sister. We have the running gag with the high
cholesterol foods, right, We've got the sister's husband who's kind
of a dufus a little bit, right. But they were
(11:24):
all done justice and carried through like we were picking
up the threads at the appropriate moments. Yeah, I agree,
I'm kind of surprised first time writers. I'm impressed. I'm impressed.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Honestly.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
There were some great lines too. Oh yeah, when they
go to meet Trish because they need some help locating Mia, right,
and she says social media stocking is an art, and
I'm Michael Angelo. I was like, what it felt very
relatable first, but I was like, that was so good.
(12:02):
And then there was all these little jabs from Gabes
like co workers or Santa his friends when they were
like giving him a hard time about his crush on Morgan.
All of it, I thought it was really good, the
stuff with the sister and her saying like I'm following
these influencers. Yep, Morgan reacting to it, like, I thought
(12:25):
it was really funny. I thought the light way that
they turned that Trish moment into like a Godfather.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
No, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yep, great, like it's done with a real light touch,
but it's great. Yeah, I agree. Which is kind of
funny too because they they said the line and I
don't know what it is from the Godfather, but it's
like here on the day of my whatever. They use
that in Gilmore Girls too, and only because I've seen
Gilmore Girls so many times and our writer appeared in
(12:54):
Gilmore Girls. I don't know. I don't believe like she
was in during that season, but she could have been. Yeah,
I'd be curious to know if she's a fan of
the show of Gilmore Girls.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yeah, just because she was on it.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Did she April Nardini? Now I understand she was on it,
but that doesn't mean she watched. Did she watch the
other seasons? You know?
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Is she like I smell Snow? I don't know, I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Does she also think that the April Nardini storyline is
a little bit bs and that people really hate that character.
I mean that they think April Nardini ruined the show
and Anna Nardini her mother was a trash bag with
never telling Luke. Okay, I know, I know, I mean,
we could have our own Gilmore Girls podcast here. We
(13:37):
know a lot about it.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
But we've discussed it.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
We panicked at the idea of the number of episodes
it would take.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
It's a lot of episodes, it certainly is. Let's get
back to Bill's Okay, you talked about a big cast.
The cameos were also very fun in this I thought
I kind of loved Andrew Walker as just this bartender.
I mean, he barely any lines and it's totally fine.
I remember when this movie got announced and everyone was like, oh,
Andrew Walker is going to be the lead, Andrew Walker
(14:07):
is going to be the lead, and then he ends
up with like this tiny little cameo part in it.
Do you remember, of course, Yeah, So it was fun
to see him in there. He has the best lines
in the movie, which was what. At the end of
her date, he says, wherever you met him, go there less. Yes,
you're right, you're right, you're right. Yeah, that date was funny.
(14:28):
I was like, oh my god, did you enjoy seeing
Tyler Hines and Hunter King?
Speaker 2 (14:31):
I loved it?
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Made no sense, but I left it. And the only
reason because like, Tyler works in football, so maybe like, yeah,
it's maybe for playing the Bills and he knows it
was cute though, Can we have a reindeer? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
I thought I was happy to see them.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Yeah, I thought that was cute.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
And then all the.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Bills players, I loved it. I only recognized one of them,
but I'm sure like the Bill's fans who are watching
this were probably pretty stoked. Yeah. It didn't do a
lot for me, but you could tell the moments where
there was someone significant on screen, and I was like,
I bet someone's really excited about that moment right there. Yeah.
(15:16):
And it's cool too because I was looking at the
cast list and if it's like a big range over
who's who a history of the franchise. Yeah, so that's
pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
And also cameo, I love that the same Santa is used. Yes,
I love that this Santa exists within the Holiday Touchdown universe.
I thought that was great, which leads me to believe
there'll be another one. I hope, So I actually kind
of hope. So this one was done well. Speaking of cameos,
if I may, we had heard that Jake from Finding
(15:53):
Mister Christmas was going to be in this movie. Mm hmm.
And I watched the movie and then I got to
the end and I realized, oh no, I didn't see Jake,
and so I scrubbed back to the movie and I.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Still didn't see Jake.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
So I messaged Jake and he says I was in
two scenes for a total of probably one second combined.
He was in the Elm Street Bakery. He's sitting behind
the bills players.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
I think you see a glimpse of me as the.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Couple is walking out, and he is a background shopper
at Viddler's the second time they are in the store.
So it's a finding mister Jake finding mister Jake indeed,
but he's there, so that's very fun.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
That's fun.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
Can I talk a second about Viddler's? Oh yeah, why
is this the five and dime of my dreams?
Speaker 2 (16:41):
I googled it. I was like, does this exist? And
of course it does.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Did you start following them on Instagram?
Speaker 2 (16:50):
I probably should do it for my personal account.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Had not from Girls Gone Hallmark, but just whatever. I
don't know. I love the idea of this, like vintage
five and dime star, like put that into my veins.
I love the warm, nostalgic neighborhood ye feel it gives
h all local flavor in this movie. Biddlers and then
(17:15):
a lot of food. We get the peanut stick, which
I had to look up what it is because I
couldn't quite tell same. It's like a like a doughnut
for the listeners, dipped in a glaze, rolled in chopped peanuts, and.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
A beef on weck. Did you know what a beef
on weck is?
Speaker 1 (17:31):
I don't. It is a thinly sliced roast beef sandwich
piled on a coumel wek roll, which is a kaiser
style role I often dipped in Aju. I'm down for that.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
I just thought they did a really nice job of
infusing all of these bits of Buffalo into the movie. Totally, totally.
You know what else I really liked about this movie
was the stadium subplot that it was their life last
year in the stadium. Yes, and so this is news
(18:04):
to me. I like googled, Yes it's true, Like they
are currently building a new stadium, and I mean obviously
we saw the shots, like you can see the new
stadium being built almost in the parking lot of the
old stadium. R right. I just thought it was I'm like,
who came up with that idea? Like? Was that just
a like supplemental story after it was written? You know, like, oh, hey,
(18:27):
by the way, we're building this new stadium, let's let's
make Gabe be part of that project. I don't know,
I don't know, but I liked it and I got
like overly emotional when Gabe is like at work and
he's talking to his team about like, be proud of
what we built. My grandfather both wrote built the original
high Mark and like I feel him when I go
(18:49):
there and blah blah blah whatever. I was like, this
is so good question about that scene. I watched it twice.
Do you think that all of those employees are actual
employees or background actors? That is a good question. I
don't know. You should go back and rewatch it because
it was very interesting to me when I was watching it,
because something about that scene, I was like, I feel
(19:11):
like I should be noticing something here now. They could
just be day player actors. I do know that this
movie had a huge stable of background actors. Obviously we
have all those crowd scenes and they had a call
for background actors. I just wondered something about that scene.
I was like, maybe these are actual Bills employees or
background actors. I don't know if anybody knows, let us know,
(19:33):
maybe Keith Costumes knows.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Maybe maybe see.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
And finally, my last like was when they Gabe surprises them,
well actually gabes two surprises. I really liked when they
honor the service member. Loved it, loved that scene, loved it,
loved it so much, and then gave surprises them again.
They all get to get take their photo and then
(19:57):
like be on the field and play a game. And
I just loved all of it. They're so excited, you mean,
we get to go on the field. They're almost less
excited about the Bills franchise members there than they are
about the chance to go on their field. That tribute moment,
I just want to say that I feel like that
moment honors the military in a way.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
I would have liked to have seen another movie this season.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
That Shall Remain Nameless and the hero speech we get
from joey pants.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
It's really lovely.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Yeah. One more production note. The way we have sportscasters
sports flavor discussion over the opening of the movie, over
Holland's getting ready moving throughout her day, and then we
have it later on going into the game.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
I think it's just a.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Nice touch that adds a lot of depth to the
movie when we're talking about football.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
I really enjoyed it. Agree me too.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
I don't have any wishes, really, I have one. I
had such a one long list. Tell me what your
wishes are. Wish is why make Morgan a doctor? If
she never goes to work. The lady is never at work.
Make her an office manager at the hospital, a community liaison,
(21:14):
a fundraiser something, a doctor. She would have to be
there all the time. And she spent more time with Gabe.
You're not wrong there. At one point she was like,
I have to work early in the morning. I was like,
you really aren't at work very often, not at all.
I don't know if you caught it. This is not
a digite that but her name is Morgan Quinn. She's
doctor Quinn. That's funny, that's medisine woman. I was like,
(21:36):
I wonder if that's on purpose.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
That is funny. Let's talk to you to see that.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
Okay, I have a few.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Yeah, me too.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
You mentioned peanut sticks already. That was on my digite
that because I was like, what is a peanut stick?
I didn't realize it was a donut. I thought it
was like a dessert of something. But yeah, do they
have those on the West coast end? They're just called
something else?
Speaker 2 (21:57):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
When I googled it, it was like a western New
York specialty. Yeah, so interesting. Do we have like a
New York deli here? I don't know where they would
have them?
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Let me know. I have a question.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
There was a chair in their home.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Is it un your Do you see the huts?
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Their the chair up Morgan's mom house. Yes, I had
the exact same chair with the I was like the
eat cat fabric. I was like, I know that chair.
Wendy's dog ate that chair. Yeah. I couldn't believe it
when I saw it because we ended up throwing that
chair away because the dog had chewed on the like
arm of it. She was a puppy. When we moved,
(22:39):
we got rid of it. But I was like, ah,
that's my old chair, and I miss it.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
It's cute chair.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Funny that you you noticed that. He instantly recognized it.
I was like, did they have your chair?
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Another? Did to see that? Ice bikes? Have you ever
seen ice bikes? I don't even know what you're talking.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
When they went at the ice skating rink, they had
bikes that you could sit on and pisce ice bikes? Yeah, no,
I've never seen that before. Yes, I did. It sound
like I was saying spikes ice bicycles. I was like,
I could get behind this pieauce. I cannot ice skate
to save my life, but perhaps I could ice bike.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
It looks fun hot.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Did the wheels actually turn on the like the tires
turn on the ice? It makes it go. I don't
know the physics of it, but I do like the
idea of sitting down and having less opportunity to break
a wrist up? You and me both? Yeah? Yeah, I
have one last Did you see that? And I'm sure
(23:43):
you have it too? The Five Gold Rings now playing
on the movie Marquis, a Holland rode In movie from
last year. Multiple times yep, yep. I was like, once
is enough, but multiple times? Yeah, they should have changed
it out and put like a different one up there.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Yeah, holidays.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
You know, I don't know whatever it's that would have
been funny. Yeah, I did notice it time for him
to come home for Christmas. Yeah exactly, because that did
have the same feel like they're on this quest to
find this person. And wasn't Tyler Hines on that meme?
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Is her?
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Yeah exactly? I have one more? Did you see that? Okay?
And during the game scene where we see the Bills playing,
they're playing like a no name opponent. Oh interesting, Yeah,
I was like, who are they playing? Who are they playing?
They're just like in like these white uniforms. They don't
say like they're playing. That's so funny. I didn't even
(24:41):
know Chargers. If the Chargers even play the Bills, I
don't know, well, because it was filmed in June, right,
so they're like probably just to both sides or Bills
players out there, no idea. I don't know if that
was like stock footage from from a another some like
an actual game game. It couldn't have been, because then
they would have had they would have ORMs on. Yeah,
(25:02):
so I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
I don't know either, but you.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
Know that's funny because it was filmed in June. But
that end scene, they're all wet. Yes, I did notice that.
So was it raining or was it the fake snow
make What was happening there? I don't know, huh, because
like Holland's.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Hair was wet and wavy and interesting. Okay, yep.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
And they were wet at the game, Joey the on
field presentation, they were kind of wet.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
I wonder if it was raining all right?
Speaker 1 (25:35):
That was that was definitely green screen though, right on
the field green.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Yeah, yeah, I don't think.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
I think the crowd, yes, I don't think there was
a full stadium in that moment, got it. But they
were outside for sure. I mean they seemed like they
were actually on the field, just not in the middle
of a game.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Hey, what did you rate A Bill's Love Story? I'm
shock more than anybody. I gave it four point twenty
five stars. I give it four and a half stars.
What's happening? I loved it.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
I loved it.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
