A podcast from a recovering Baptist pastor exploring the richness and complexity of Christian faith by untangling it from hollow, institutional religion. Whether you're deconstructing, reconstructing, or just remodeling your childhood faith, host Brett Harris offers space to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and recover hope, knowing that, while we might wonder what this all means and where life is leading us as we wander through it, God knows where. As we keep exploring these Big Questions we have of faith and we get from others in our lives, there’s one question that flows most directly from the one I asked last week. If God is good, why does evil exist?
I don’t know if I have a good answer. I might not have a satisfying answer, but I’ve wrestled with it a lot and I’ll share what I think with you today. Let me know what you think.
You might have your own answers to these questi...
Well, here we are. The first true episode of Big Questions! Figured we’d start off with a real softball. Can’t you tell by the title?
I don’t know that my kids have asked me this question, but I know I’ve asked it myself and part of my response hit me as I walking the other day. I heard a quote from Steve Jobs and it got my wheels turning on why it is that we believe in God.
You might have your own answers to these questions we&apos...
In the midst of the heaviness of the world, I spent the weekend with three friends, one of whom lost his dad a few weeks ago. The time I would’ve used to get the first real episode of our Big Questions series together the way I would like it was better used being with some of my best friends in the world at that funeral. So, as I get the real first episode of Big Questions together more cleanly for you for next week, I’m sharing th...
Welcome to God Knows Where's New Series, "Big Questions!" Big Questions is all about wrestling with some of the big questions we all ask of God, of our faith, of our tradition, in honest ways. It's what a lot of you have been asking for over the three years of God Knows Where. How would I answer this or that question? What would I say in this scenario?
So, here goes nothing. For the next, however long it takes, ...
Hard to believe it's been 3 YEARS since this whole journey began. Thanks for being a part of it all. Here's a replay of the very first episode of God Knows Where, "Personal Jesus." With a bunch of the drama of institutional religion swirling around in my life and work right now, it felt good to look back on this earlier work and remember what our work and faith is all about. Enjoy!
Sunday night, I was invited to preach at Ekklesia in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. We celebrated Epiphany and I shared my thoughts on the first five verses of the Gospel of John. I’m going to share them with y’all here today. And, if you happen to have been in the room on Sunday night at Ekklesia, I went back a filled in a hole in the middle after talking about this sermon with my wife.
I’d jokingly suggested to the church’s ...
Here we are at the end of 2025. I imagine many of you, like me, are looking forward to turning the page and beginning a new year. As we close out 2025, though, I want to replay the most listened to episode of the year for you. It’s one that touched directly on the chaos and struggle of 2025. Back in September, I shared this episode as part of the Live Streams series.
Hope y’all enjoy this replay of “Hate Wounds.”

Going back into the vault today and my audio editor doesn't want to cooperate, so I couldn't edit the intro for you...but I hope you enjoy this bit of light in the darkness of these winter days.
For today’s episode, I’m sharing a sermon I recently preached at Northminster Church in Monroe, Louisiana, on hands down the least well known book in the Bible: Haggai. Drop me a line if you've ever heard Haggai preached before...If you ever find yourself in north Louisiana, check Northminster out, and if you’d like for me to come preach or teach at your church, let me know that as well. Send me a message on social media.
We’re wrapping up this series on Rivers today with a look at the river that appears in John’s vision in Revelation. I’ve always found Revelation to be a bit like reading a fever dream and I didn’t grow up reading it or hearing it read often, so I might not get it right. If you’ve got questions about my take, let me know. All I know is I really love that this story ends where the first one began.
Let’s talk about that.

We’re back with another look at another river. This one, kind of like those in the stories from Daniel, isn’t a real river, but in some ways it could be. Let me know what you think.

Amos’s words from last week catapult us into the few river stories in the gospels and writings of the New Testament. Today, we’re looking at maybe the most famous one: Jesus’ baptism. What strikes me most about this whole ritual isn’t the ritual at all, but this little rant John goes on from the middle of the Jordan River...

Today’s story doesn’t exactly take place at a river, but I don’t know how to do a series on rivers without reading the prophet Amos’s comparison of God’s justice to a mighty, flowing river. Given the way the world is these days, it feels an appropriate story to sit with too. Let me know what you think.

We’re back with two more stories today. This time both from the book of Daniel, and sadly there are no lions. Just Daniel and some visions he sees from the banks of two different rivers. These are kind of bonkers stories that I won’t completely unpack because…well…I’m more interested in him being at the river than the dreams he had. I hope that will make sense in a few minutes.
Daniel 8, 10
I’m back from vacation so that means we’re back on the river. It’s a stretch to call today’s river, a river, but that’s what the psalmist and the prophet Ezekiel do, so I’m siding with them. It’s one you may not have heard of and will definitely struggle to find on a map. And the two stories are too long to share here, but if you want to find them and read them later, take a look at Psalm 46 and Ezekiel 47.

Hey y'all! I'm not working this week...taking some much needed R&R with family, so this episode felt appropriate to post.
Hope you enjoy it and take some time for yourself this week too!
Today, we’re at the Jordan River with a foreign army general named Naaman seeking healing for his leprosy. I love this story. God often moves in mysterious ways, but in this story God is pretty straightforward about how Naaman will find healing, and like us he doesn’t really know what to do with that. Let me know what you think!
