Embark on a journey of understanding as we unravel the profound meanings behind the names of Hosea's children and their prophetic messages to Israel. What if the names Jezreel, Lo-Ruhamah, and Lo-Ammi could unlock a deeper narrative about God's judgment and promise of restoration? In this episode, we promise you'll gain insight into how these names reflect not only the consequences of Israel's transgressions but also the hope of redemption and unity through Jesus Christ. Despite struggling with the flu, I've been compelled to share these fascinating revelations, highlighting how the scattered become gathered, the unmerciful becomes merciful, and how a nation once not God's people can transform into His own.

We delve into the rich symbolism woven throughout Hosea's story and his family, offering a fresh perspective on God's character and the redemptive arc that spans from Old Testament prophecy to New Testament fulfillment. Discover the intricate layers of biblical storytelling where punishment meets promise, and faithfulness triumphs over human fallibility. As we reflect on the unyielding nature of God's faithfulness, you'll see the unfolding narrative of discipline intertwined with hope. This episode sets the stage for our next exploration, where we will witness the poignant redemption of Gomer, showcasing the boundless mercy that lies at the heart of Hosea's prophetic journey.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
to the second part of Hosea.
Let's talk about the elephantin the room, my voice.
I do have the flu, but there'sbeen too many times I've had to
not do my podcast because Icouldn't talk.
So I decided, if you guys canstand listening to me like this,

(00:22):
I'm going to go ahead and do mypodcast.
So settle in with me and giveme a little prayer that my voice
will make it to the end andwe'll learn a little bit about
Hosea and his children and theirnames.

(00:57):
This is part two on Hosea'schildren's names, and it is very
, very interesting how God hadHosea name his children.
In Hosea 1.4, it says the Lordsaid to him call his name
Jezreel, for in a little while Iwill avenge the bloodshed of
Jezreel on the house of Jehu andbring an end to the kingdom of

(01:18):
the house of Israel.
Hosea 1.6 says and sheconceived again and bore a
daughter.
Then God said to him Call herLo-Rehema, for I will no longer
have mercy on the house ofIsrael, but I will utterly take

(01:39):
them away.
Hosea 1.9 says.
Then God said Call his nameLo-Amai, for you are not my
people and I will not be yourGod.
Hosea 2.23 said Then I will sowher for myself in the earth and

(01:59):
I will have mercy on her.
Who had not obtained mercy.
Then I shall say to those whoare not my people, you are my
people and they shall say youare my God.
So the children's names wereJezreel, lo-roh-heh-meh and

(02:21):
Lo-Am-I, and those meant Jezreelis God will scatter, lo-rehema
is no mercy and Lo-Ammai is notmy people.
But there's a lot of thingsthat go on with these names.

(02:42):
There's a lot of things that goon with these names and you'll
be kind of surprised, awfully assurprised as I was when I
started this study.
Let's look at Jezreel.
He does his name does meansomething different within time.
The judgment was God scatters.

(03:11):
Hosea 1.5 says this is after hetold Hosea what to name him.
He also said it shall come topass in that day that I will
break the bow of Israel in thevalley of Jezreel.
The punishment was Jezreelmeans God scatters and was
referenced to the bloodshed andviolence committed by Jehu's

(03:35):
dynasty in the city of Jezreel.
That's in 2 Kings 10.
Because of Israel's sin, idolatry and bloodshed, god
declared that he would end thekingdom of Israel and break
their military power.
This prophecy was fulfilled in722 BC, when Assyria conquered

(03:59):
Israel and scattered its people.
We'll go over what therestorative of these names were
once we look at all of thejudgments and the Punishment for
lo rahema, which means no mercy.
It meant that God wouldwithdraw his compassion from

(04:23):
Israel.
This was fulfilled when Godallowed Assyria to destroy
Israel and send them into exile.
Unlike Judah, the southernkingdom, israel received no
divine rescue.
And lo am I means not my people, signifying that God was

(04:46):
breaking his covenantrelationship with Israel.
Because of their idolatry, disobedience, israel would be
cut off from God's blessing.
Cut off from God's blessing.
This was a devastatingdeclaration, as Israel had once
been God's chosen people.
So isn't that kind of weird thatGod took one man, hosea.

(05:11):
He had three children by aharlot who he was told by God to
marry, and then she ran off,and then he went and got her
back.
Three children by a harlot whohe was told by God to marry, and
then she ran off, and then hewent and got her back.
God showed this much to Israel.
Look what you're doing and thisis what I am going to punish

(05:33):
you with.
But things do change because, like I said, there are
redemptions to these names.
And let's go back to JezreelHosea 2, 22 to 23 says the earth

(05:58):
shall answer with grain, withnew wine and with oil, and they
shall answer Jezreel.
Then I will sow her for myselfin the earth and I will have
mercy on her who had notobtained mercy.
Then I will say to those whoare not my people, you are my

(06:18):
people.
And they will say to those whoare not my people, you are my
people, and they will say youare my God.
God reverses the meaning ofJezreel from God scatters to God
plants.
Instead of being scattered injudgment, israel would be

(06:38):
planted in the land again.
This foreshadowed Israel'srestoration and, ultimately, the
return to the Lord.
And for Lo-Rehemi, herredemption was Hosea 2.23,.

(06:58):
I will have mercy on her whohad not obtained mercy.
God reversed the curse ofLorehemi, saying that he would
show mercy again.
This was fulfilled partiallywhen some Israelites returned
from exile, but it ultimatelypoints to Jesus Christ.
But it ultimately points toJesus Christ through whom God

(07:20):
extends mercy to all who believein him.
And lo am I.
The redemption for him wasHosea 1.10.
Yet the number of children ofIsrael shall be as the sand of
the sea, which cannot bemeasured or numbered, and it

(07:46):
shall come to pass in the placewhere it was said to them you
are not my people.
There it shall be said to themyou are sons of the living God.
God reversed Lo-Ami byrestoring his people and
reaffirming them as His sons.
The prophecy extends to eventhe Gentiles, showing that
through Christ, all nations canbecome God's people, and that's

(08:07):
what I thought was so wonderful.
We look at things in the OldTestament and we read them, and
we just kind of sometimes readthem at face value.
We don't realize that it isshowing us Jesus Christ where we
are scattered.
We were all scattered, but thenJesus Christ came and gathered

(08:30):
us together and where we had nomercy again, god gave us all
mercy through Jesus Christ.
And then there was not mypeople, and now Jew and Gentiles
are God's people through JesusChrist.

(08:50):
Hosea had a very interestingstory.
Hosea went through some veryinteresting things, but when you
look deeply inside it you seethat it was just another light
into what Jesus Christ will dofor us, that the story of

(09:15):
Hosea's children is not justabout Israel.
It's about God's character.
God disciplines sin, but healways offers redemption.
Even when we're unfaithful, godremains faithful.
Through Jesus Christ, we whowere once not his people has

(09:38):
become his people.
I think that's a wonderful thing.
You look at the fact that Godscatters and God gathers through
Jesus Christ.
God withholds mercy and Godgives mercy through Jesus Christ

(10:05):
, and we were not his people, but through Jesus Christ we are
his people.
And that's the wonderful storyof Hosea and his children and

(10:38):
their names.
That show all of the dynamicsthat God has in punishment and
redemption.
He can give us punishment, buthe'll always, and redemption he
can give us punishment, butHe'll always offer redemption.
So I hope you enjoyed this.
I hope you were able to getpast my crickety voice and be
ready next week for our thirdstudy on Hosea, and this one is

(11:05):
going to be about how Hosearedeems Gomer.
So talk to you later.
