Hi, we're Carolyn and Michelle! But you might know us as la_triathlete and fuelmyrun on Instagram. We're just two athletic gal pals who like train for races (Carolyn for triathlons and Michelle for marathons), create fun content on social media and most importantly, love to yap. While this podcast has a loose fitness/training focus, we keep things light and fun over here. We share funny stories, talk about our training and races, answer questions, get a little personal and have a lot of fun! Whether you're a seasoned runner, a beginner triathlete or you despise all forms of cardio, there is a little something for everyone. So throw on a pair of headphones during your run and enjoy! This episode is a petition for everyone to start liking their own IG posts. Today’s episode covers everything from drones in nature, trail running tips, getting lost with AllTrails, and breaking garbage disposals. Carolyn joins the masters swim team at the Rose Bowl and shares what being a master is all about.
We talk first cars (both equally epic), going to church, eating before runs, listening to Usher on a run, and break into con...
For all tents & purposes - it’s a birthday episode! Luckily, Carolyn and Michelle have an appropriate age gap now, so they can continue to be friends. We talk about peaking (in regards to aging and training), the cliché-ness of not feeling older in your 30s, running faster as you age, and how Carolyn decided bingo at a wine bar was the right birthday move (watch out, she’s taking on elders in the church next). We cover traveling...
Today we start with learning about cogs (well Carolyn talks about them and also other bike-related things), influencing, and we get the anticipated paragliding recap.
And then, with a lot of random pivots, including adult spelling bees, ef/marry/kill The Office edition, narcissistic snakes on a run, and running at threshold pace, we dive into the 'What the Helly' questions you gave us!!
These include what we do with old running shoe...
Every podcast should start with a wholesome electric scooter wave moment w/ the retirement home community, in our humble opinions.
We’re talking about everything from the UV index to low iron struggles.
Michelle’s hamstring (or is it a tendon?) is still whispering in her ear (same level as a whisper of marshmallow), and yes, we’re still blaming Botox.
Carolyn does more cardio than Michelle’s brain can contemplate. We chat abou...
Carolyn’s been circle swimming with boomers and drinking questionable water from strangers, while Michelle takes a staycation and gets the hardest massage known to man. We cover everything from pee beer (Natty Light, we see you), why bourbon is crazy to enjoy but IPAs slap, and whether you should feel morally obligated to tidy a hotel room before housekeeping.
Other highlights:
Running through everything from fake eyelashes to pausing the Garmin.
Michelle thinks Carolyn prefers short course swimming because it’s like jazz and continues to call a flip turn a kick turn, and we laugh about the older woman walking the wrong way on the track WITH PURPOSE. Carolyn’s debating paragliding (which goes against her “I don’t do anything risky” mention earlier in the pod.) + another running etiquette debate about b...
Stay tuned until the end for details on our giveawayyyyyy. This week, we run through everything from floss picks on the ground to getting faster at running.
Michelle possibly tweaks her hamstring and Carolyn follows pool etiquette to a T (after tackling a few 60-year-old men). We need to stop debating heart rate & sleep scores and start debating swim lane etiquette.
Also, shoutout to the highlight of our lives… the scholastic b...
Carolyn’s back from Spain (again) after tearing it up on the dance floor. We dive into Michelle’s latest theories, trail running, and when to pull out the party Garmin. Carolyn doesn’t like bottom feeders but loves a phat bowl of Chipotle - but it brings up the question… will the bowl kill you or bring you life?
We cover everything from Sex in the Suburbs, to how hunger is suspicious on airplanes, to travel struggles as athletes...
Dav listened to Michelle edit parts of this and proceeded to ask her “wait, isn’t this suppose to be a running and/or triathlon podcast?”
This week, we cover everything from running guilt to ghost theories—with a few tangents in between (this is our favorite episode, we think.) Carolyn is anticipating the flight to Spain in a few days. Dav also told Michelle he’s upset with her after listening to the language segment of this pod...
Carolyn gets pulled over mid-ride for a stop sign situation (solitary confinement?), Michelle is learning more Fred moves (RE: hydration pack on the bike, which mildly upset her), and Joey is out there with flowing locks. We also reflect on the small, unsettling moments that make you wonder: am I kind of nasty?
Also in this episode:
Carolyn’s back from racing St. George and has alll of the deets - starting with suspiciously good pre-race sleep. We unpack what actually happens at a pro meeting, passing when swimming, ironman drafting rules, and why ice in the bra just hits different. The race may have not gone as planned, but her fueling was on point.
Meanwhile, Michelle doubles down on her belief that if she ever bikes again, elbow and knee pads are non-neg...
This week, we’re emotionally unhinged and physically unwell, but in a good way! We kick things off with a small menty B and a constructive conversation about good handwriting, which we COULD have if using a soft felt-tip pen with smooth jazz playing in the background. Michelle’s thumbs are getting jacked from editing on her phone, while Carolyn’s dealing with mysterious car noises - could her car have too many belts??
Michelle m...
This week on Going Off Course, we’re dealing with Italian restaurants refusing to carb-load on our terms, confidently making up words, and debating the important stuff—like whether you should wear underwear when you run. Also, don’t forget to arch your bishop when you wear a running cap.
Carolyn ponders if chain Mexican food can be authentic. Michelle reminisces on her El Torito days. Are the days of free samples at race ex...
This is Michelle’s favorite episode, she thinks. -Michelle (after editing)
This one’s for the girls (and the guys curious about menstrual cups, mewing, and why we might be qualified to talk about men’s trousers). Have you ever heard about mewing? Don’t worry, you’ll be able to say yes after this episode. Find up mewing. This relates (somehow to) clenching teeth, which is parallel to the discovery that Carolyn’s toes might be par...

Messy buns, marathon goals, and the math of squeezing in a run before a flight—this one’s got it all. We cover the evolution of early 2000s hairstyles (Michelle’s signature ponytail, Carolyn's swimmer-perfect messy bun), dramatic taper week injuries (yes, from making a reel), and the questionable ways Michelle consumes electrolytes. Carolyn preps for Spain while debating whether to raw dog the flight to the Zwift theme song, and Mi...
In this week’s episode, Carolyn and Michelle discuss everything from long runs to swimming to Carolyn's upcoming brand trip. Carolyn opens up about her obsession with national park gift shops and they both agree: normalize wearing driving gloves when your nails are wrecked.
Carolyn has been flip-turning since the womb, Michelle raced a stranger on the bike path (it was his fault), but he also probably didn't know it was a race. ...
In this episode, we recap a BIG one: the LA Marathon. But first - what would you do if you wanted a sandwich, but they only have quiches? Huge PRs were had, but not without chafing and questionable handheld water bottle storage. We get into everything from emotional math mid-race to the cult-like energy of pace groups and an interesting realization—do you share your marathon PR from your watch or the official course time?
Also f...
Michelle survived the long run from hell (spoiler: she tried to hit marathon pace, fueled by oatmeal, chia, and two large coffees - you can guess the rest) and Carolyn is days out from the LA marathon still in-between carbon plated shoes. Tib is not tibbing and shin is not shinning.
Today is all about marathon running, for ex. the difference in taper between marathoners and triathletes. But we also cover:
We also cover:
Nothing like dicussing the perfect taper strategy & where the gels should be stored pre race day. Carolyn and Michelle go deep into the pre-marathon chaos—should you run the day before or two days off before? Will expired gels fuel you or take you out?
Why the ef do people get unreasonably mad about running vests and is it genetically sound why Carolyn rubs her feet together? Michelle, meanwhile, is busy preparing for ...
