Speaker 1 (00:10):
Ladies and gentlemen, golf Week Amateur Tour the
podcast Talking about all thingsGolf Week Amateur Tour,
including interviews with tourdirectors, players and course
pros.
Now here are your hosts atlantatour director tim newman and el
paso las cruces director chrisrocha chris, we've got.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
The 2024 National Championship is over.
We're getting ready tointerview all these winners.
Yep, you had a really good week.
You didn't win NationalChampionship, but you won
Director's Cup.
Yep, you accomplished somegoals that you wanted to
accomplish.
I think you won you some money, and I'm not sure if I should

(01:03):
get a cut of that money or not.
My agent you won you some moneyand I hope that you learned
something from that whole piece, and especially what I was
trying to tell you the othernight when we were talking.
You came down here to win thenational championship.
Don't worry about what otherpeople are doing, worry about
you.
Play your game and things willtake care of themselves, and

(01:26):
they did.
You didn't win, but you playedreally well.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
No, I agree.
And that actually came intoeffect today when I started
realizing I can only controlwhat I can do.
And at one point I mean Istarted off with, I think, four
or five straight bogeys, okay, and went on a seven par, seven
hole par run and had a slip upon the next hole that took a

(01:53):
double.
But I went and, you know, ranto the car, looked at the
leaderboard because it hasn'tupdated yet and I was fourth
place, which is crazy to eventhink about.
Um, and you know me, we'vetalked about I'm not as a board
leader, but I wanted to see, with these seven pars, where it
got me and just be playing mygame and let everybody else fall
right.
I mean, out there today, bogeyswere pars and pars were birdies,

(02:17):
um, so it really helped out andyou know, came down clutch uh
director's cup first year it wasone of my goals and uh came
down to a playoff here on hole18 and uh stuck it to three,
three feet maybe, missed thebirdie putt, tapped in the par

(02:40):
and still uh secured the victory.
But I mean it was great to hitthat shot from 105 yards, yep,
and we had a gallery out there,I'm sure.
So that was cool to hear themcheer and go crazy and then see
if it's over here.
You know, don't three-putt, wedon't want to see a three-putt.
It's like dude really.
But no, it was a fun week.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Played really good good and I'm happy with the way
I played.
I'm proud he really is.
It's like next year he's gottabe our friend slave.
We're working on that.
So we've got five winnerscoming in.
Uh, there's.
There was some some really goodscores today.
Across Overall for the weekendI think scores were generally

(03:29):
high.
The weather was nice.
It was a little windy Fridayand Saturday, today's a little
bit calmer, so scores came downa little bit.
But some of the winnerssomebody shot one under at
Atlanta, no, no, no, even parwinners.
Somebody shot one under atAtlanta Dunes, even par.

(03:49):
I think it was even par atAtlanta Dunes.
That's solid.

Speaker 6 (03:52):
On Friday Come on, dude Right.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
That's solid.
Come on now.
He was going dirt.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Everybody else was the next closest one.
That was plus six, Right.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
That's a solid player right there, solid player.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
I mean across all the flights.
There were some really goodscores throughout the weekend,
whether they were one-offs hereor there, right, but again,
friday and Saturday wins were up.
Scores were generally a littlebit higher.
Today was better, so scoreswere a little bit lower, but I'm
looking forward to talking toall of our champions, for sure.

(04:30):
So, uh, so, scores a little bitlower.
Scores were a little bit lower, but I'm looking forward to
talking to all of our champions, for sure.
So let's get into it and, uh,see how they did.
Yeah, all right, welcome to the2024 golf week amateur tour
national championship.
We're at the hills course inpalmetto dunes and we have our
first national champion of theof the year with us, chris, uh,
which you know that.
We understand that there arefive flights, but we champ is
one that everybody really looksat.
You know they're the ones thatreally set the tone for my

(04:52):
entire tour and this weekend, uh, he set the tone, he really set
the tone.
Um, so let's welcome.
Welcome, bryce Benson from theDallas tour.
Bryce, congratulations andThank you.
Let's start off with AtlanticDunes.
You know the two toughestcourses we play are the Hills

(05:13):
course, where we're sitting atright now, and Atlantic Dunes,
and Atlantic Dunes is waytougher than Hills course, and
you played there Friday.
The winds were up, the greenswere very fast and you smoked
the field.
You shot one over 73.
Closest score to you was sixstrokes back, excuse me, five
strokes back as 78.
I mean, I'm looking at yourcard.

(05:36):
You had four bogeys, threebirdies.
Tell us about it, bud.
I'm shocked.
I'm not shocked.
I'm shocked that it was a 73and then, with everybody else,
was so far back.

Speaker 7 (05:57):
I was just like I kept it in play all day.
I was hitting it all good off.
The tee Drains were so fast, myputting my speed was really
good, so I just kept it good off.
The tee Drains were so fast, myputting my speed was really
good, so I just kept it in play, just played smart and never
really made a big number.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Well, that's the key, I don't care what flight you're
in, that's really the key.
Right, with champ flightthere's no triple bogey rule, so
you really have to make surethat you don't get a 9 or a 10,
get a big number, because youknow, in champ fights there's
really no coming back.

Speaker 7 (06:27):
yeah, mostly a lot of irons off the tee.
Keep it in play and make sure Igive myself an opportunity to
make a birdie or easy par ishright.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
and then you go golden bear correct, yep, shoot
a, yep, shoot a 71.
Yep.
Obviously it's an easier course, but how did you feel going
into that course?

Speaker 7 (06:49):
I just went to play golf.
I wouldn't necessarily say itwas easier, yes, but it was
still trees everywhere RightMissed it off a tee.
We were going to be in a lot oftrouble, and just the kind of
same thing.
Just make sure I hit it in thefairway, put it on the green,
give myself an opportunity.
If I?
Kind of same thing.
Just make sure I hit in thefairway, put on the green, give
myself an opportunity.
If I make birdie, great if Imake par move on next hole and
keep playing golf.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, and again, you still had a relatively clean
card two bogeys with, with, withthree birdies and, but you only
let one person gain any strokeswhen it was only and they only
gave one stroke on you.
So I mean you, you really builton your lead yeah, you just
just like I said just.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
I just keep the three .
It's a three-day tournament.
He's just focused.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
And he's not like us regular people, right?
You know we all like JoJo thecircus clown and get all worded
up.
So you know you leave thecourse.
You know golden bear, you knowyou've got.
I think it was a five or sixstroke lead.
What was your thinking?
You know you've got.
I think it was a five or sixstroke lead.
What was your thinking?
You know, from the time youleft until you know you teed off

(07:51):
in the first group of swan.
If you say just keep it in play, I'm going to scream.

Speaker 7 (08:01):
What were you thinking?
Hopefully I wake up in themorning and keep playing golf.
To be honest, I mean, yeah, itwas a lot harder today with that
lead and then trying to likeobviously you want to build on
it and for me my game kind ofjust went downhill today but I

(08:21):
was able to still keep playing.
Good, but it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
What you still won by four stroke.
I did, I did, yeah, I did, itwas me, and you played in a
stacked group, I mean.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Oh, no, Second place Jeff.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
And then, yeah, in the group right behind you I
played leader last year.
Well, Joe's a seven-timenational champion.

Speaker 7 (08:48):
Yeah, good golfer.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Lance Lacombe.
We've had him on the show acouple times.
He's gotten Corbin I mean allguys that we talk about on a
regular basis and again Jeff wasright behind you, yeah, and I
think at one point he wasactually two strokes.
Yeah, it was close and I keptwatching the looter boy and uh,
and you know so, when you heyand again, this is not on

(09:11):
anybody, but when you beat thatstack field, that's that says
something.
And I would say, you shot 78today.
Is that what was 78?

Speaker 7 (09:19):
yeah, okay, that that's wasn't very good, that it
was good, and it's good enough,it's respect and and again.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
So you know we, you know we're.
We're going to talk to, I think, the C-Flight player that had a
pretty good lead as he wascoming down the stretch.
I was talking to someone I saidlook, he's going to need stroke
leading If he's a smart golferand I know the guy and he is
he's just going to.
He's not called for pens, he'snot going to do anything stupid,
he's going to just dink anddunk.

(09:46):
And if he takes a bogey, it'sfine, don't take a double, don't
take a triple, he doesn't needbirdies to win, which almost
makes it harder when you getinside your own head, yeah, but
it makes it hard because you'relike, oh, just be protected,
instead of you're one up andyou've got to really play golf
and keep playing.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
It's a big mind game out there when you're winning by
a shot.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
But it's also a big mind game when you shoot a 100%
yeah 100%.

Speaker 7 (10:15):
Why am I still playing golf, exactly?

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Exactly.
So what's next for you?
Because this is a really bigaccomplishment Again, playing
the courses that you played andthe conditions that you played
in what was next week?

Speaker 7 (10:30):
I guess just keep playing some golf week tour in
dallas, all right I heard that.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
I heard there's no competition in dallas.
They only get like two or threepeople.
They only get like two or threepeople at a tournament out
there I'm not not much.

Speaker 7 (10:42):
I'd take the dallas field over, or anybody out here.
Well, right now I would too.
You did, you did.
I mean there's a bunch of guysthat didn't show up that are
just as good.
So who's your big competitionin Dallas?
All of them.
Phillip's probably really good.
Mason really good All of them.
It just depends what.
We're playing golf, we canshoot in the 60s any day.

(11:03):
And the champ you got tochallenge them to get them down
here, nick, they need to.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
They need to come down here and own this.
Yeah, and just so everybodyknows, I'm joking about the
Dallas tour.
They've got the largest tour.
They get 128, 130, some guys toevery tournament, the
director's okay, he's all right.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
He's all right.
There's a couple issues withhim, but everything else is
pretty good.
We'll talk about that later.
So, but yeah, the champ fight, even champ fight.
We usually have 20, 30 guysevery week.
Most stewards don't, they don't.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
And that's what really helps.
It doesn't really matter whatfight you're in.
If you get 20, 30 guys in there, there's going to be good
competition and you've got tobring your A game up to be able
to play every week.
Well, Bryce, thank you so muchfor coming and joining us for a
couple minutes.
Congratulations on everything.
Thank you, We'll see you herenext year, Yep.

Speaker 7 (11:52):
Thank you, Congrats both Thanks guys All right.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Next we have our A-Flight champion.
I hope I pronounced thiscorrectly Sokati Pavese from
Tampa, florida.
Is that correct, right,congratulations.
Thank you very much.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
I mean, but I just commit to it and I I mean I
enjoy playing with everybody.
It is so friendly, so nice, butevery stroke I have to focus on
it.
I mean I have a lot of, a lotof trouble shot, but I just try

(12:45):
to fix that problem.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
So you shot 81 on Friday, the second most round of
the day.

Speaker 4 (12:56):
Right.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Pretty good.
So you go into day two as oneof the leaders.
You go into day two as one ofthe leaders.
So, teeing off on hole one ofthe Jones course to me, which is
great because, Jones, you knowyou go out and you come back, so
you don't have to take thatlong drive.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
What do you think of the Jones course?
I think it's beautiful.
I mean I love the layout and Ilove the green, and yeah, I mean
I love the fairways.
It's beautiful.
I mean, what can I say?
I think when I play golf Ifocus on the layout and the

(13:40):
green.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Yeah, so you were two over on the front and and then
you get to the back and that parfive hole, number 10 on the
back.
You're hitting right into thewind, into the ocean.
To me, that's one of myfavorite holes on the island.
Jonah's one of my favoritecourse, Everybody knows that,
but that's one of my favoriteholes on the island.
Because of that, what was thewind like in your face on
Saturday?

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Wow, I think about 18 months.
Yeah, 18 months.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Yeah, that's a standard six-shot hole for me.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
My first shot.
I hit into the bunker andthat's my second day Okay into
the bunker and that's my secondday, okay, and so I just tried
to get out of the bunker and Ihad trouble in that hole.
Actually I love that hole.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Is it a hole?
I do yeah, but it's a toughhole.
It's a pretty hole, but it's atough hole, even when the wind
is down.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
It's so hard because you always have that ocean wind
in your face and I believe it'sup there a little bit too.
Yeah, a little uphill.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah Right, and so then you go back there for day
three.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
Day three Day three, another 81.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
And I mean at that point, you know how are you
feeling, going from Saturdaynight into this morning.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Oh Lord, Honestly, I woke up at 1 o'clock.
I could not sleep.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
Oh no.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
And I tried to close my mind, but I could not sleep.
And I told my husband.
I said lost my mind, but Icould not sleep.
And I told my husband, I saidI'm just going to just commit
playing 18 hole and let theresult come out by itself, right
, and I hit left and right, leftand right.
It just like put all over theplace.
But again I, uh, I tried to fixthe problem.

(15:39):
I had a lot of mistakes, but Itried to fix it and it helped.
Just try to stay calm.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Right yeah, keep the nerves down a little bit.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
Oh my God, yes, but I still have it.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
But again you shot 81 , again and you know you still
won by three.

Speaker 4 (16:02):
Well, in golf, you know, I believe in mindset.

Speaker 8 (16:06):
Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
Like I said, I made a lot of mistakes.
Like I, I hit balls.
My driver is so bad.
I have 230 yard shot to go andthen I try to lay up in front of
the bunker and then I have 64yard to go and then I make one

(16:27):
putt for punt.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Yeah, yeah, and that was it.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
So when you knew, that's not the 18 hole.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
The 18 hole I tried to play like par 5 because it's
kind of difficult and so I justpretend like it's a par 5.
And so I just hit straight, layup and then try to stay close
to the green, but unfortunatelyI went into the bunker tried to

(17:01):
get out and tried to make twoputts Again.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
A bogey on 18, that's fine, yes, so were you watching
the scoreboard on live score?

Speaker 4 (17:12):
or were you just playing and found out afterwards
?
I watched halfway Okay.
Then when I have a lot, of, lotof nerve, I say I have to stop
watching it, I have to try tofocus on it, especially like I
have three leg holes, threewhole life, and you know, that
is kind of like my heart, it isjust like crazy.

(17:35):
And so on the past three, onthe 17th I hit off the green
lawn.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (17:43):
Almost out of bounds and in the deer footprint.

Speaker 8 (17:47):
Oh is your ball.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
My ball and I feel like, wow, what am I going to do
?
So I said, well, it is what itis.
I just tried to get it out andI take five.
I'm happy, very happy with that, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
Yeah, that's fine.
I mean, it is what it is, andagain you still win by three.
But congratulations and thanksso much for spending a couple
minutes with us.
We appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
Thank you very much.
I really enjoyed the tour.
Oh, thank you, and I have tosay that we have been blessed
for this whole week.
The weather is beautiful, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
It really is All right, take care.
Thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Thank you, congratulations.
All right, we're here with theB-Flight winner and one of my
playing partners this week, mrMichael Anderson, cincinnati Day
Intour Congratulations.
Thank you very much.
Appreciate that.
So we started Country Club ofHilton Head.
First round Shut at 83.
Yep, how do you feel that?

Speaker 8 (18:50):
went Well.
I had great guys in my groupand I thought I played bad
because I expected there'd be a75 due to the yardage being
short.
I was shocked that there wasnot and I ended up playing a lot
better.
When I looked at the finals atthe end of the round I was like,
oh, I'm not near as bad as Ithought it was right and I was

(19:10):
actually very excited yeah, Imean you, you and me both shot
83 and I think we were like thethird group and we were that's
not terrible yeah, I mean you,you and me both shot at 83, and
I think we were like the thirdgroup.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
That's not terrible.
Yeah, I mean we were 1B.
So you're only four strokesback after day one.
So really you don't want to bein the lead after day one anyway
.
So you're in a good spot.
You had a birdie on number nine.
Did that pay you off?
No, all right, well, at leastyou had a birdie.
So then you go over to PalmettoHall, the Hills course over
Palmetto Hall.
What did you think of thatcourse?

Speaker 8 (19:44):
I thought that was fine.
I got to play it a few yearsago in the senior and I knew
driver was not the play along.
Right, it's just hit it to thedog legs and knock it up and you
get on.
It's great If not knock it upand you get on, it's great if
not chip up and just keepchugging along.
Then I had my wonderful groupmates cheering me along, most of
them.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
I had one guy that was dead set on texas winning
and well, oh man so so was yourgroup that you played with on
day two as good as a group withthese played with on day one.
Be honest, just because he'ssitting there, you can be honest
.
No, no, I had a great time withthis young man.

Speaker 8 (20:18):
I'm not saying you didn't have a great time I said,
was it as good as it was?
Because I had a player from dayone in my group on day two and
day three.
Okay, well, that's good we hada great time, so really.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
so what that tells me is is you guys are battling for
54 holes.

Speaker 8 (20:39):
We did.
We had a good old time and wewere cheering each other on the
whole way.
Who was that?
I played with Jeremy on day oneand day three Jeremy, who?
What was Jeremy's last name?
He's Hodge.
Yep, he's from the AugustaGeorgia tour.
Good, and in day two we hadSean with us.

(21:00):
I had him on day one and daytwo.
Sean unfortunately didn't makeit to day three with me, but we
had a good time and they allcheered me on, wished me good
luck on this morning.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Right.
So the four-stroke lead orfour-stroke victory act.
I should say congratulations,thank you.
Uh, you're gonna be able totake your picture and have have
a nice picture on the website,so, um, but again,
congratulations.
Thank you for beating me, ohsorry about that and you have a
good one.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
Thank you, we're with the sea flight.
Winner from clums ohio, kevinbrown.
Kevin, congratulations on thewin this week.
Thank you very much.
That's a great accomplishment.
Very proud of it.
So tell us about you know youstarted the week at Worcester
Reef, correct?
How did your round?

Speaker 5 (21:47):
go then Didn't start off too well.
It was kind of tight there andit's a lot of target golf.
But once I got going going, iron play was decent and so I
was able to to get to the greensand make some putts and so able
to save some of my pars andthat sort of thing so, but you

(22:09):
shot the 87, which was secondhighest score of the day.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
Correct, I was surprised.
Yeah well, the winds were out,out there were blowing pretty
good.
Yes, they were.
So the 87,.
The lowest score of the day wasKevin LePage from the Charlotte
tour.
He shot 85.
So you know you were rightthere going into day two.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
Yeah, very happy when I saw the pairings the next day
that I was, you know, in secondplace for the second bird.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Right, and then you went to my favorite course.
Jim says every course is afavorite course, but my favorite
course, hampton Hall.
How'd you do there?
How'd you fare?

Speaker 5 (22:40):
The fairways are a lot more open there, so I was
able to really pull out mydriver and kind of do some
target golf with my driver, makesure I got some good angles in,
and iron play was really goodfor me and that's what really
helped me to score so well.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
The second day you shot 79, which was low score of
the day, low score of thetournament for sea flight.
Yes, that's pretty good.
But let's talk about HamptonHall again, because it's one of
my favorite courses.
It's one of mine too Well, because for guys like me and
most guys it's so wide open.
I mean you can really kind ofjust sway away, but you don't

(23:14):
want to get in the rough.
Once you get in the rough, whathappens?

Speaker 5 (23:16):
Yeah, your ball sinks down in, and then you're really
trying to have to figure outwhich club you have to hit into
the green.
Now, kind of make sure it'shitting short of the pin,
because the greens don't holdreal well.
So it's kind of knowing thecourse from that perspective.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
But you know you had a relatively clean scorecard,
even though you had two doubles.
You also had two birdies, yes,so that really kind of.
You know they cover each otherup.
Did you win any skin money onthat?

Speaker 5 (23:42):
I did.
I got one skin, all right, better, better than nothing,
better than nothing.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
Yeah, Nothing Better than nothing.

Speaker 5 (23:47):
So you know you've got a pretty good lead going
into day three when you, whenyou left the course saturday to
the time you teed off so friday, when I left oyster reef, I was
pretty down because I expectedmore from myself, and so I saw I
was six shots back from theleader overall, and so when I

(24:11):
found out, well you know I hadthe second, I scored.
Okay, fine, let's, let's resetand go back and go back to
Hampton Hall and really playthere and just see what we can
do, because it's a course I feelfits me well.
And so I was able to go intothere with kind of a let's
attack type of mindset.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
And so you follow up today with an 83, again
second-lowest score of the day.
So I mean you didn't reallyplay much different than
yesterday.
No, pretty solid, yeah, but youhad like an eight or nine-shot
lead for the majority of the day.
So were you really trying to goat pins and get birdies or were

(24:53):
you just kind of trying to playit safe?

Speaker 5 (24:56):
It depended on the hole.
So if I was close enough sayyou know 150 or so in, I was
going at the pins trying to getsome birdies.
I believe I only got one, had acouple of opportunities I
missed, but still I was tryingfor that.
And then towards the end it wasa let's make sure we avoid the
big score, because that's whereyou can really screw up you know

(25:18):
, that's, that's kind of what Iwas was saying to somebody.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
you know, because I was at oyster reef today and I
was talking to someone, I said,look, he's got, he's got a
pretty good lead if, if I'm himand I know who he is and he's a
smart guy, he he's not baggingthe ball, he's, he's trying to
play it safe.
You know, take, take a bogeyand move on.
Don't take a double, but take a.
He doesn't need birdies.
You know, to move up to theleaderboard or to win, play safe

(25:42):
.
And he did that.
He did have a couple hiccups onthe back.
Yeah, he took a penalty, so hetook a triple and then he took
another double on the other parthree on the back.
But you know again, let me seeFly.
But you know again, we seeflight.
You're going to make mistakes.
You're going to make mistakesand they didn't hurt you, but
you did have a birdie.
You going to get paid out ofthat thing.

(26:04):
No, no, no, that's right, yougot the big pay.

Speaker 5 (26:07):
Right, that's right, I'll take the trophy any day.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
So what are your thoughts?
You've been around for a longtime.
Yeah, I have 12 or 13 yearsMinimum.
I've seen you play pretty muchthat whole time Number one.
I'm really proud of you.
What are your thoughts on your?

Speaker 5 (26:24):
comps.
Well, when I first came intothe tour, I came in as a
D-Flighter and was really tryingto just learn the game.
I'd only been playing for acouple of years.
I worked really hard, gotmyself up to where I was, uh,
got into the a flight at onepoint, but then, you know, I
didn't keep up with playing.
In the last couple years Ihaven't done much at all, and so

(26:44):
this year was kind of like, allright, I want to play more, and
so that just worked on.
My game hadn't worked out toowell.
I kind of peaked right now.
It was fantastic, perfecttiming.
All right, I'll take that anyday.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
So what's next?
I mean, obviously you saw thebig picture.
You're going to have a big oldpicture of yourself.
I don't know what you're goingto do with that but what's next
for you?

Speaker 5 (27:05):
Going to play the senior tour next week Awesome.
You're going to pull off therare double no-transcript

(27:27):
courses in a long, long time, soI'm not sure what they're like,
so I just have to see how itworks.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
I'm sure you're gonna do just fine don't, don't let
this wind go in your head.
Right, right, right.
You'll be fine.
All right, let's welcome theD-Flight National Champion this
year from Cincinnati, daytonThomas Hargis.
Thomas, congratulations andwelcome, and thank you for
spending some time with us whenyou should be out there, you
know, partying oh no, it's fun.

Speaker 10 (27:51):
Thanks so much.
Doing this, this is awesome.
No, this is you know it'sactually our pleasure.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
You know it's this the first time we're, you know,
actually interviewing.
No letters on on, uh, on camera.
Chris did it walk around lastyear.
We're in a microphone.
You know we're trying to.
You know, as people say, justbe better.
We're trying to up in the gamea little bit better.
It's hard for us, you know, because we're really down here
guys.
You know so.
So tell us about your, yourfirst day.

(28:18):
I mean, you played, you played,uh, golden bear.
Yep, on friday, tell us aboutyour round um, it was, it was
fun.

Speaker 10 (28:28):
Um, I get here on monday because we don't have
bermuda in ohio, so I'm likegetting used to the opening the
club face and, um, honestly, just getting here.
This year my mom was diagnosedwith cancer.
She wanted home hospice, so Ididn't even play a tournament
until almost July or August.
I got my five in and then I hadto go back to work and kind of

(28:50):
scramble.
So, like the last, this is mythird year playing golf and so
every year I've conned my wifeinto coming up here, and so this
is my third year playing golf, and so every year I've conned my
wife into coming up here.
And so this is my third year atnationals and D flight and I
honestly wanted to qualify, justto be here and to enjoy the
vacation and just I wouldn'teven share if I was going to
play this year.
So, yeah, I played two practicerounds there and it was just,
it was fun.
It was fun.
I had a great group of guys.

(29:11):
I knew I wasn't going to berunning at the front of the pack
, so I I started on what 17b orwhatever.
We all know how that goes rightand so it was just basically
getting out of day one with myshirt on, and, and it was fun.
It was a good group and uh, yeah, I was.
I was happy to be there.
That's probably why I shot sowell.
Well, yeah, you shot 87, thelow round of the day.
Yes, it was, it was, it was, itwas, it was and and I'm still

(29:34):
mad about the the bogey I tookon the last hole for the three
putts.
So you know it's, it was a goodday.
I think I birdied one hole.
There wasn't any major blow upholes, which was the goal of the
day, and so, yeah, it was nicewell, before we move on.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
You said you had to con your wife and they come to
hilton head.
It shouldn't be that hard well,we like the resort.

Speaker 10 (29:54):
I will say that the beach helps, beach helps, and we
also stay after for about threeor four days.
Yeah, awesome A couple times.
And so you know when I'mplaying she's gracious enough to
like leave me alone until likethree or four o'clock and then
we go out and have dinner, right?
So for the next three daysthere's no golf, there's nothing
.
We're going to go have some fun.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
So the second round, you go out to the hard course,
yes, and come out with a 90.
That saved my tail.

Speaker 10 (30:19):
That actually probably won me the national
championship.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
I would agree, because that low round of the
day I believe.

Speaker 10 (30:25):
Oh no, it was absolutely the low round.
As a matter of fact, most ofthe flight was in the hundreds
and I took a practice round outthere and I happened to catch a
little side note that said weshare caddies with the big
Hilton head course, harvard, harvard, sound, thank you.
And the Adrenaline Right.
And I called down there.
I was like you got a caddy thatknows this course he goes, we

(30:47):
do.
I was like, get me him tomorrowfor my tee time.
I was on the fourth hole and itwas windy, just like it's been
all week, and he looked at meand he goes put your driver in
your bag, tee that down and justhitch her three wood and four
wood all day.
And that's all I did.
I shot piercers down the laneand the greens were lightning

(31:08):
fast and I played.
Of course it used to be a PGAqualifier, clover Nook in
Cincinnati, so I'm used to thefast greens and so it was just a
matter of playing bogey ball, staying out of major trouble,
and you know we all thought wewere playing badly until we
looked at the scores at the veryend and, matter of fact, I
think my playing partner, he andI both stayed in the same group

(31:30):
.
I think he shot like a 96, Ibelieve it was Zach.
He shot like a 96 and I believeit was Zach.
He shot like a 96, and hethought he shot himself out of
it.
And I said I was like there'sno way everybody else played
better than we did tonight, likethe course was that hard.

Speaker 3 (31:45):
Well, I mean, the neat thing about D-Flight is all
of them are playing that course.
Oh yeah, so you're notcompeting Like in the other
flights, you're not competingagainst somebody on a different
courts, right, you know.
So you know how everybody'sdoing, right.

Speaker 10 (31:55):
Yeah, everybody's going to play the same hazards,
the same wind, the same garbage, the same thing.
And so I mean, honestly, that'swhy I love the golf week tour,
because, like, I'll play somePGA events with handicaps, but
look, we're all on the sameflight, everybody's on the same
playing field, right?
You just you shoot what youshoot and everybody's got to
play with the same garbage,right?

(32:15):
No, that absolutely won me.
That's especially after Iplayed today.
Today was like riding a bull.
I said that yesterday, buttoday was even worse.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
It was just Well, when we look at your scores from
Atlantic Dunes, you said afterthe fourth hole, you told you
put away, you tripled one.

Speaker 10 (32:31):
No, no, no.
And the practice route.
I had a practice route becauseI was banging driver and the
wind just kept taking it andlike, after the fourth hole,
he's like this is ridiculous.
He's like drop your.
He's like let me see you hityour three wood, let me see you
hit your five wood.
And he's like put the thing inyour bag, just play with that
three wood.
The first hole was bad luck.
I actually hit a beautiful fivewood and and it took a bad hop

(32:53):
off the fairway and hit in thewater and then we ended up in a
bad spot where I got caught inthe wind and then it went in the
water On the other side becauseI was like an idiot.
I played for the hole insteadof just trying to save the
stroke and get my bogey and getoff.
I was trying to play for thepin like an idiot and then I
forgot there was water and thenI went get myself back under

(33:14):
control.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
But yeah, no it, get myself back under control.
But yeah, no, it wasn't a badday.
I didn't do anything to hurtmyself.
Yeah, even today you shot 94.
Oh, it was horrible, so but butbut yeah, you know, you had a.
I wouldn't say you had a bigleague going into day three, but
you had a and it was eightstrokes yeah, it was eight
strokes over by uh playingpartners and tony came out of
nowhere.

Speaker 10 (33:35):
Tony, like what do you shoot a day?
You shot a 90.
At one point he was shootinglike an 84, he was tracking for
an 84 and, um, I think actually.
So my driver was on, I justcouldn't find my irons and I was
readjusting back to the slowergreen speeds and golden bear,
and so there were a couple oflike really stupid shots that

(33:57):
just wouldn't fall.
My irons were working and itgot to 13.
Tony cut it to two and I waslooking at the scoreboard at
that point and I'm like I didn'tget together because it was.
I started doing range drillsjust to get the ball down the
middle of the fairway andplaying for bogeys and I hate to

(34:18):
say it but like unfortunately,tony had a bad 15, 16, 17.
He hit two in the woods in bothof those holes.
It's super tight if we go downto the end.
I did par 18.
Well, you parred 14?
That's right.
I went on a run.
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
You were three over over the last five.
Yes, and let's think about this.
Yeah, under pressure for anational championship.
A deflate player, chris, again,I'm not downplaying you, no, no
, no.
Tournament golf is incredibly amental game Three over to win
the national championship Threeover over the last five.
To win the nationalchampionship three over over the
last five to win nationalchampionship.

Speaker 10 (34:56):
That's a lot of effort, very solid, thank you.
I didn't even think about itlike that.
No, it's, that's a good way toput it.
I hope your mom is.
Oh, I, you know what.
I say this all the time.
Most people don't get to spendtime with their parents.
We don't die, I know and forfor there, and we spent time
with her and, um, you don't getthat back, you know.
So it was, it was the rightchoice to be, and then we had to

(35:19):
, had to get back to thecompanies and do what I needed
to do, to to do that, and soplaying here was really an
enjoyment, like the fact that weweren't even sure, even a month
ago, that we could afford to behere.
We'd be here and all that stuff, and so, um, yeah, yeah, it's,
uh, it's kind of emotional to behere and just to see how it
worked out.
And you know, I mean I'msitting in the cart on what

(35:41):
maybe like nine or 10 going, I'mcoughing this up, I'm just
absolutely doing it, and so,yeah, bearing down those last
rails, I didn't realize I shotthat well, in the last five.
But yeah, no, it was, it wasfun.
This is always fun.
We're glad you're here and sohappy for you, congratulations.

Speaker 7 (35:59):
Thank you so much.
Thanks for all you guys do.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
Congrats.
Appreciate you, take care ofyourself.
We'll definitely see you herenext year.
Oh yeah, and I don't know ifyou have to convince your wife
next year too, but you know, hopefully she'll say as far.
Thanks guys All right, we'rehere with the 2024 Senior
Amateur National Champions.

(36:21):
It's been a great season andwe're here with the Champ Flight
Champion, Chuck Kirk fromJacksonville.
Chuck, congratulations on thewin, bud.
Thank you very much, Appreciateit.
You had a really good two days.
You finished at three under.

Speaker 11 (36:35):
How are you feeling right now?
Tired, tired, but happy.
No doubt about it.
There's a lot of goodcompetition here, and I was just
fortunate to get out on top ofyeah, we talk a lot about.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
If you go to regionals, there's really good
competition.
But coming down here for anational championship, these are
the best players across thecountry and you beat a really
stacked field.

Speaker 11 (36:52):
Yeah, I was pretty impressed with everybody I was
playing against.
I was just, like I said, fortunate to make it out.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
So let's go back to yesterday's round.
You played at Fazio.
You shot even par 70 yesterday, because we haven't been on the
Fazio course in a while.
What score did you?

Speaker 11 (37:08):
get.
I had never seen it either, soit was in absolutely beautiful
conditions.
A little trickery there andthere as far as carry and some
target lines, but for the mostpart it was very true for what
you saw and it's of course Ihope we get to play again.
It's well worth it.
Unfortunately, they don't havea range Right, so I had to come
over here in the dark and hitballs for a five-minute drive to

(37:30):
the other place, but it worked.
It worked out.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Just take what you can get.
Yes, sir, so you end up withthree birdies, three bogeys.
Did you get any skin spouts onthose?
No, sir, no.

Speaker 11 (37:42):
Not, unless Dennis Kepin did tell me.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
That's possible too.
You know, yesterday was skinsacross the whole National
Championship.

Speaker 11 (37:48):
Three flights only had one.
Actually our flight only hadone.
Yesterday it was over 1,000, soit over a thousand.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
So a good day for him , very good day.
And then uh, today you playedover at hilton head national,
which everybody knows.
That's one of my favoritecourses.
You shot uh three under um.

Speaker 11 (38:05):
Tell me about, oh I mean, it started out pretty
quick not normally a quickstarter and birdied the first
hole from about 15 foot um, andI was like, okay, here we go.
And but the guy was in secondalso birdied it.
So I was like, well, we'regoing to keep this going as far
as we can.
And I just wanted to be steadyall day and I was fortunate
enough to be able to do that, didn't put myself in any real

(38:25):
trouble.
I had one bad drive that kindof put me in a weird spot, but I
was able to get out of it witha good par and the other guy
struggled in that hole andthat's where I got my gaffe and
my lead and was just able tofinish up strong.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Yeah, and so again you won by three strokes.
You know second place.
You know there was two tie forsecond, john Fryman from
Columbus and Jay Barnes, whichis also a play out of Jay today.
So again you're goinghead-to-head, you know, really
for 36 holes and you know tohave a three-shot win like that,
that's pretty solid.

Speaker 11 (38:59):
Well, like I said, I was fortunate enough not to
make the mistakes that theyunfortunately did and that just
kept me in front of them and, like I said, hold on to the end.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
Yeah, I think in champ flight I think that's one
of the biggest differences inflights Can't make mistakes
Costly.
So if you make a mistake in achamp flight, it costs you the
other flight.
It's okay, you can makemistakes.
It's cutting down on themistakes, correct?

Speaker 11 (39:23):
Or being able to get out of them without any real
damage, right.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
So what advice would you give to the higher
handicappers?
You know that's a question Ilike to ask all the champ flight
winners because you know a lotof people come with a little bit
different mentality in how theyapproach each course and each
round.
What advice would you give tothe higher handicappers to get
them to shave a stroke or twooff their scores?

Speaker 11 (39:46):
Well, I'm fortunate I get to play a lot of
competitive golf, so I've gottencomfortable and that's
something that they probablyneed to do too play more
competitive golf.
So they are used to playingunder pressure, right, and you
know, work on your short game, right.
Really that made a difference, you know.
I mean you'd be surprised, especially some of the higher
handicap rates, like 15 to 20.
They can get down to 10 insingle digits just by maybe able

(40:09):
to get down a couple more timesaround, versus what they're
able to do now, because I andit's just, it's just work.
You, I love practice, so it'sokay for me, but some people
just don't have the time to getout and play or their course,
it's just not a good conditionto get anything out of it.
So I would say short game andjust get comfortable playing
golf in a competitive spirit.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
Well, Chuck, congratulations on the National
Championship.
Thank you very much.

Speaker 11 (40:33):
Look forward to seeing you next year.
Yeah, it's pretty wild.
Alright, bud, take care ofyourself.
Thanks so much.
All right, bye-bye.

Speaker 2 (40:39):
All right, we're back here with the A-Flight champion
, Hawk Hawkins from Norfolk,Virginia.
He's with the Southern VirginiaTour.
Yep.
Congratulations on the NationalChampionship.
I appreciate it.
How are you feeling?

Speaker 12 (40:51):
Great actually.
I I feel unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (40:54):
You know, you sat down and you asked how I was.
I asked if not near as good asyou and you said you're right,
you're right, you're right,you're right, we're doing pretty
good.
That's awesome.
You know, you win the nationalchampionship.
You got to be doing pretty good.
So you played two really goodcourses.
You played the two hills course, so you played Palmetto Hall.
Right.
What's the difference betweentwo courses for you?

Speaker 12 (41:19):
I'll tell you what the course today.
Of course it was my first timeplaying both courses.
Okay, so what I noticed todaywas, you know, placing the ball
not on a hill.
I mean, you know, thedifference was the hills within
the fairways obviously affectingyour lie.
So that was the main differenceand I thought the course

(41:42):
yesterday played a little bitmore difficult.

Speaker 2 (41:45):
Okay, it is.
That's kind of difficult course.
I think this course is a littlebit more difficult, but that's.
I shoot 150 each time, so don'tworry about that.
So yesterday over at PalmettoHall Hills, you shot 78, two
strokes back to walk me throughthe round.
He shot 78, two strikes back towalk me through the round.

Speaker 12 (42:02):
Well, I mean I had a pretty consistent round from
start to until I made a triplebogey.
I think I was two over through15 holes, okay, and got to a par
four.
Water to the right out ofbounds, left wanted to stay away
from the water.
It was about 220 to get to thewater and, uh, just trying to

(42:24):
play conservative and got tooconservative and hooked it left
and and I think that was atelltale of of me dropping from
because I was leading, okay, bytwo going into that hole and of
course that dropped me down intofifth, which was still
acceptable right first day.
You just can't lose it, right.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
And really you don't want to be in lead in the first
day anyway.
I didn't.
You really don't.
That's why I chatted with that.
I did not.
I didn't want to sleep on alead.
Yeah, you know so well.
Tell me about your mentality.

Speaker 12 (43:05):
Again, you're leaving here until you get to
the course this morning.
Well, actually, I wanted to gethere, uh, which I did get here
about an hour early.
I wanted to get on the rangeand get some range work in and
go through my bag, which I wasable to do.
That and, uh, and then my focuswas to just stay ahead of the
game from start to finish, whichall I wanted to do was make
pars, greens and regulations, and I wasn't able to do that,

(43:30):
but yet still I was able to.
My short game helped me outchipping and my putting was
pretty good.
So I stayed consistent withtrying to make pars and staying
away from those big numbers, andI was able to do it, with the
exception of one hole, and Ithink that's that particular
hole.
I was putting for a double, soI was looking dead in the eyes

(43:52):
of a triple and which I didn'twant to do, and I made that putt
and, believe it or not, thatkind of brought me back to to
where I needed to be.

Speaker 2 (44:01):
Well, you shot 75 today.
Three over here on this courseis not bad.
Now Ronnie Iver from Louisianashot the low round day at 73.
So plus one.
I mean he really moved upleaderboards?
Absolutely he did, but youplayed again.
You were going head-to-headwith Duke Sturgis from
Indianapolis and Dwayne Diversfrom Jacksonville all day today.
All day.

Speaker 12 (44:22):
Talk about that a little bit.
Well, I'll tell you they.
You know it was pretty relaxedfrom the first teak.
They introduced each other, butI could see the tenacity.
Oh yeah, you know the tensionwas there, you could feel it.
We wanted each and everybody toplay well.
But those two guys, I think Itrailed them for most of the day

(44:45):
until about halfway through andI kind of moved up a little bit
and I just stayed ahead of them, tried not to make those mental
mistakes, which I was.
I think I did okay with that.
I think you did just fine, yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Because you walked away with a I think it was a
two-stroke victory over Duke Yep.
Again, that's a two-day totalof 153.
So you were six, nine over for36 holes.
That's a pretty good run.
That's a pretty good planeright there.

Speaker 12 (45:16):
Yeah, it was a grind especially today it was a grind
.
Especially today it was.
The course is challenging andall in a doubt, got to be
strategic.
So and Air Force veteran.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
Absolutely Well.
Thank you so much for yourservice.
My pleasure.
Congratulations on the win.
Thanks a lot and good luck, andwe'll see you next year.
Thanks a lot, take care.
All Appreciate it All.
Right Back with the B-FlightNational Champion, probably
recognizing from A few minutesago.
This is one of the raredouble-doubles that we've had.
We've got Michael Anderson fromthe Cincinnati Dayton Tour.

(45:46):
He won B-Flight Golf WeekNational Championship and now
he's here and followed that upwith the Senior National
Championship.
Mike, congratulations again.
That's pretty awesome.
So you know, I was with you alittle bit last week and I was
with you today.
And you know, first thing, today's was really back and

(46:10):
forth, today's round was reallyback.
We'll come back to that becauseI was following that, because I
was really at your course.
But you know, tell me aboutyour round yesterday over at
Oyster Reef because you finished78 round of the day one shot
and a lead.

Speaker 8 (46:26):
I had 23 putts for the day.
My group was giving me a hardtime.
Anything that was inside 25feet it went in the hole.
So they were like why are youeven putting that?
Just pick it up and let's goSave us some time.
Okay, next time I will, but forreal, that's what happened.
And, um, this morning they weremaking fun of it.

(46:48):
They go are you even puttingtoday, or are you just picking
them up?
And they were saying I hope weputt like you today and you said
I hope you don't well, no, Isaid I would well.
There's you the best there yougo, there you go.

Speaker 2 (47:01):
So did you feel any pressure at all?
You know, going into today, knowing, because you correct me
if I'm wrong, but I think youwere low around you know, two of
the three days in golf week, the second day for sure.

Speaker 8 (47:18):
No, no, no, I wasn't no.
Second day I was not.
There was a 78 and a 70.
No, no, no, the second day Iwas not.
There was a 78 and a 70.
But you were right at the top.
I went to 80 on the second day.
First day was 83, so I know itwasn't.
The last day was 82, I think, which was close.
I just played really consistenton that one.

Speaker 2 (47:37):
Yeah, but again you were right up top of the
leaderboard.
So you've been top of theleaderboard for five straight
rounds.

Speaker 8 (47:49):
So did you feel any pressure going into?
There was more pressure today.
Why is that?
Well, after I hit eightprovisional drives today, I only
had to use three of them, okay, whoa.
So it could have went waysideways.
I got lucky on a bunch of acouple of bounces off the trees
and we were joking around I'dhit a tee shot, even though it
hit the green.
They go you hitting a provision.
It got to that point.

(48:10):
Okay, just a nice running jokethat we had going, I mean, and
when we today, when everybodystarted to get on a little bad
stretch, somebody in the groupjust walked over.
Hey, head up, let's go, you'restill in this, let's go, come on
.
You got this and we cheeredeach other on and I think we
finished one, two and the otherguy was tied for third.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
Yeah, and so let's talk about that today, because
again, you guys were going backand forth, back and forth and
actually Mitch was in firstplace up through 16, and he had
some trouble.

Speaker 8 (48:44):
He hit his tee shot on 17 in part three, pushed it
right and it plugged in thebunker and he had a few issues
there.

Speaker 2 (48:53):
Yeah, so Mitch finished tied for third out of
the Augusta Tour, mark Clank, tour director from Southern
Florida, ty for third and Wilson.

Speaker 8 (49:05):
And Wilson Shelton.
He was in my cart today.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
He was plus 16.
You were plus 15.
Wilson from Central CarolinaBen was in the cart today, but
that's got to be fun, though Imean back and forth.

Speaker 8 (49:21):
We were having a good old time and we were cheering
each other on.
We didn't look at the boarduntil like whole 13 or 14 and
they go.
Well, you guys know you're likeone or two, or you guys are
going back and forth all daylong and we're like well, we're
cheering each other on, that'sit.

Speaker 2 (49:36):
We didn't care who won, as long as there's somebody
in our group again, and that's,that's part of the the the
thing about the tour, right?
I mean, you know, especiallywith the senior tour, it's not,
yes, everybody's competing hard, everybody's, you know, wants to
win.
Everybody wants to do that butnot at the expense of other
fighters, and that's off I mean,we were having so much fun with

(49:57):
each other.

Speaker 8 (49:58):
On the last hole, on 18, one of the guys hooked his
t-shot.
It hit one of the decks and wedidn't see where it came off.
So we went and identified hisball.
We go hey, is this yours?
With the three marks here?
And then, of course, one of theother true B flyers goes with
the gray paint on it.
There you go.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Oh God, that's awesome.
Well, michael, again thanks forspending some time.

Speaker 8 (50:26):
I know you interrupted your championship
duties.
I'd rather do this than that.
Oh no, I understand.

Speaker 2 (50:30):
Okay, congratulate, thank you, and we will see you
next year.
Absolutely, I will be here.
All right, buddy, take care ofyourself, appreciate it.
Okay, we're back with the SeaFlight National Champion, dave
Mullis from Southern Virginia.

Speaker 9 (50:41):
Dave, congratulations on the win.
Thank you, ray.
I appreciate that.
You know you struggled todayWell, you played a really good
round today.
You led.
I was fighting it Well, youshot 86.

Speaker 2 (50:55):
The low round of the day was 85.
Yeah, so I mean you were rightthere.
You were one shot off the leadyesterday at Robbers Row, Right?
So we haven't been to RobbersRow in a number of years.
What were your thoughts on thatcourse?

Speaker 9 (51:10):
I thought the fairways were a little lacking
and the greens they were alittle bumpy, but they were
faster than the greens weretoday.
Yeah, but all in all it was afun day yesterday.

Speaker 2 (51:25):
Well, walk me through the round yesterday, because
again you shot 85 yesterday.
Yeah, low round was 84.
So I mean you're one back.

Speaker 9 (51:35):
I struggled again yesterday.
I had five double bogeys and sothat was just kind of like I
kept pounding my head againstthe wall.
It just seemed like you know Istarted out on 17.
And I thank Dennis for puttingme on the number two handicap
hole.
On the first day I questionedhis parentage, but that's okay.
And then he got double bogeydouble bogey right off the bat

(51:58):
and played a little bit betterbirdied one and went on from
there to play.
I have a decent round, butthose doubles kept popping in
somewhere.
I just wasn't pleased with howI played either.
I'm glad I played well enough, but I could have done better.

Speaker 2 (52:17):
Well, so you were in the third group today, Mm-hmm.
So again right there at the top, who were your players?

Speaker 9 (52:26):
Tim, and I can't remember Tim Wall, and then Bob,
and I think it was Mike.
No, mike, I've forgottenhimself.
Well, that's all right, theydidn't win anyway, no offense,
I'll tell you what the foursomeI had today was absolutely great

(52:47):
.
We had an absolute marveloustime out there.
Good, we were laughing andjoking, and really it was right
off the bat.
We were all relaxed andenjoying ourselves.
So it wasn't one of those tenserounds where you go out there
and fight or anything like that, and so I really enjoyed the day
.

Speaker 2 (53:05):
You know I talk to people a lot about one of the
differences between the seniortour and the golfing tour.
You know a lot of the same guysplay on both.
But you know, when you come tothe senior tour it just seems a
little bit more relaxed, alittle bit more laid back.

Speaker 9 (53:18):
Well, I've played both.
I played many years on theregular tour at Virginia Beach
and then only about the lastfour years have I played.
Just concentrate, because Ican't hit it with the big boys
anymore.
That's a struggle.
What was really interestingtoday?
I'm a retired naval aviator, but the airplane my airplane

(53:38):
actually flew over on the 16thhole, okay, and that kind of got
me kick-started again.
Awesome, because I was kind ofdown after bogey, a couple bogey
and that.
So that was kind of fun.
What did you fly?
I flew E2Cs, okay, awesome.
So I scared myself way too manytimes.
Oh, I'm going to board the boat, but that's all right, that's
all right.

Speaker 2 (54:02):
That's.
You're here with us, I am, I'mon this side of the divot,
that's all exactly.
And you know, we've got yeah, there are so many of our members
that are our military, primemilitary, retired military and
you're like the, the fourthaviator that I've talked to, oh,
yeah, I mean, um, you know,I've got some s16 pilots, a10
pilots.
Talked to somebody, uh, lastyear who was a F-16 pilot and
his son was an F-16 pilot aswell, so they were like one of

(54:24):
the only two father-sons flyingat the same time.
Oh, wow, yeah, so it's prettygood and thank you so much for
your service.

Speaker 9 (54:32):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (54:32):
Thank you very much you guys, I'm an Army guy, okay,
well, exactly, we're going tovisit Army.
Well, dave, thank you so muchfor taking some time with us.
I know you've got championshipduties that you have to go do
Congratulations on the win andwe'll see you next time.
Thank you again.
Take care, bud.
The final national championshipof 2024, and you can probably

(54:57):
see right behind us we've gotour first back-to-back winner in
forever, I think, outside ofJamf Flight, robert.
Congratulations, bud.
Thank you, we did it by phonelast year.
This time I get to shake yourhand.
Thank you, this is an awesome, awesome accomplishment.
Going back-to-back, what do youthink?

(55:19):
Wow, I was going to say wow.
So tell me about it.
Tell me about yesterday.
You played, actually, youplayed right here at the Hills
course.
Tell me about the round.

Speaker 6 (55:31):
The.
Oh, I was so nervous cominginto that first round.
All I you know, I said thislast year and I'll say it again
All I wanted to do was justbogey call, and I think I
accomplished that with a 91.
Yeah, you shot 91 hereyesterday, which is a really
good score, um, but yeah, I'mpretty happy with that.
It was just nervous the wholetime, just trying to keep up

(55:54):
with everybody and sticking tothe game plan and right, well,
but so so you had, uh, low roundthe day was 90 by jody
broussard, so you.

Speaker 2 (56:05):
So you're one shot back, you're in the lead group.
You know what?
What again?
What are you thinking?
Because so let's go back, let'sgo back a little bit.
You know, last year youfinished second in golf week,
right, right, and then tell Iand didn't tell anybody, and
then you won the seniors, wonthe seniors.
Yeah, so you come into golfweek.

(56:27):
You didn't have as good a yeargolf week, but you were top 20?
.

Speaker 6 (56:31):
Tied for 19th yeah.
Tied 19th yeah.

Speaker 2 (56:34):
So again, that's still pretty good Out of 128
golfers really pretty good.
Then you come into the seniortour tour and you're one shot
off the lead.
What kind of pressure was it?

Speaker 6 (56:47):
It was a lot of pressure.
I'll tell you that right there.
It was a lot.
Just trying to figure out youknow hate to say this just
trying to keep up with the otherguy Right, right, right, watch
what he's doing, keeping out hisstrokes and all that stuff.
It was kind of tough to dealwith that.

Speaker 2 (57:05):
I mean, you're playing with him, you're going
back and forth with him all daylong, right?
So you shot 89.
Jody shot 91.
Yeah, I mean, that doesn't buya stroke, right?
So he had you by a stroke dayone.
You beat him by two strokestoday, so that's where you have
the one-shot victory.
But again, you know, that's 18holes of back and forth, and

(57:29):
back and forth, and back andforth.
And I told you before we got onhere that I was following you
all day.
That's so cool Because I'msaying I'm hoping he does it
because we haven't done itforever.
I was, you know, truth be told,I was following three people.
I was following MichaelAnderson, the B-Flight National
Champion, kevin Brown from theC-Flight, because he won the

(57:50):
golf weekend and he had a reallygood day but didn't get it done
.
That sounds bad.
But didn't win.

Speaker 6 (57:57):
And then you, so I didn't look at the scores at all
.
I think I told you that before.
I try not to look at the scores, but this time when we made the
turn I thought I'm going to goahead and take a peek, and I
think he was up one stroke on me, I think he was.
And then after that it was likeall right, now I got to grind a

(58:19):
little bit, Stay on track,Watch what he's doing, See where
I'm at.
And you know, he had a couplebad shots and I capitalized on
him and then I just stuck withhim and then we went a hole.
I think we were like 17.
I think we was like 17.

(58:42):
I think it was maybe tied andwe double bogeyed that last one
in the last hole, number 18.
He got caught in the sand, kindof chucked it out, and then I
end up capitalizing on that one.

Speaker 2 (58:57):
But again, it's almost like match play at that
point, right yeah, when you'redown to the last nine holes and
you're either tied or up oneback one, whatever it is.
I mean, there's a coupledifferent philosophies about
going about it, but you have tomake sure that you don't make a
big mistake and that you, youknow, my biggest mistake right
now, which I think he ended upcatching me, was a par three.

Speaker 6 (59:21):
I ended up tripling that thing.
Yeah, hole 16, you did triple.
I tripled that one, and that'swhen I started thinking about
all the scores.
I'm thinking, yeah, he's, he'sclose to me right now, so I
think we was tied at that atthat point.
Okay, and then yeah I thinkyou're right.

Speaker 2 (59:36):
you're right because it was tied and actually last
last score that I saw when mycards started coming in and
started verifying those cards,is you were tied through 35
holes and so you know, if youlook at the last hole, you
bogeyed, he doubled and that wasa clincher.

(59:56):
That was it, yeah.

Speaker 6 (59:58):
That's all.
Yeah, that was.
I was like yeah, I can'tbelieve it.
Okay, can't believe it.
Yeah, I didn't think I would doit back-to-back, right, yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
Well, robert, thank you so much for spending some
time with us.
Congratulations, Thank you.
I appreciate that.
Hold on before we go.
What are you going to do?
Because now you have space fortwo?

Speaker 6 (01:00:18):
I don't know what we'll do with them, man, but
it's going to look good, it'sgoing to look good on the wall.

Speaker 2 (01:00:23):
yes, robert, take care of yourself.
We'll see you next year andthanks a lot for following us
this year.
We'll see you all again nextyear here in Hilton Head for the
2025 Senior Amateur Tour, golfand Camper Tour National
Championships.
Take care.
National Championship Week is,or week and a half, is now
officially over time to startthinking about the 2025 season.

(01:00:46):
What are your thoughts, youroverall thoughts, about the year
?

Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
year was successful, accomplished a lot of goals.
You know we talked about in theopening, really happy with what
I did, can't wait for the nextseason.
You know January, new chapter,I mean we've talked about it A
flight, we'll see how it goes.
But got to get some work donein this offseason, that's for
sure.

Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
I'll lay out a plan for you.
I'll lay out a plan for you.
There's, you know, I thoughtthe season went really well.
I mean from the golf, from uh,the podcast, some of the things
we did, how there's gonna besome new changes.
Like, if you're seeing videonow, uh, videos can become a a
big thing, a big thing.

(01:01:31):
Um, I'm not sure when theregional series is going to be
announced, but I'm pretty surewe'll know, because we've got to
plan something.

Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
You keep telling me we're going to travel a lot oh
yeah, we're going to do sometraveling.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
Um, hopefully we get some more sponsors, because
that's really what we need, right, to be able to fund these
things.
Um, you know, we're neither oneof us are independently wealthy
, no, so, uh, we need somesponsors to do that.
But again, you know, I can'tthank the sponsors that we had
this year enough for all thesupport that they gave us.
Oh, yeah, for sure.
Uh, dennis and Jennifer, the, the, the, the tour directors,

(01:02:04):
the members really supporting usand the podcast and what and
what we do.
Uh, it's, it's, it's reallybeen a blessing.

Speaker 3 (01:02:12):
Yeah, it has, and I mean being able to be recognized
at the director's meeting.
Um, another chapter, anotherchapter and now.
Now we're gonna have anotherseason, more fun, and I gotta
start shaving more if I'm gonnabe on video gaming more.

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
You know, you gotta get, you gotta get I gotta do my
hair now and all this stuff.
You know I'm not doing any ofthat, so this is this is just my
face, right?
Nobody wants to see that.
But anyway, this is, this iswhat we're going with, um, but
yeah, a lot of good thingscoming.
As everybody knows, registration opens up on Black
Friday.
Our next episode is November18th, right before Black Friday,

(01:02:50):
right before Black Friday.
So again, thank you everybodyfor all your support this year.
I think it's been a wonderfulyear, very successful for the
tour, for us individually, thepodcast, and can't thank you
enough.
Yes, thank you very much.
