Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, chris,
almost through August, wrapped
up Kia with us past weekend.
Only two regionals left andwe're less than 60 days out from
national championship.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yep, it's been fun.
I keep saying that, I don'tknow why I keep saying that, but
it has been, I think, moreenjoyable now that we get to do
what we get to do.
But I'm going to travel out toScottsdale next couple days and
then give it one more chance tohopefully pull a W in the
regional this year.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Well, you know, we're
always pulling for you and you
know when you're going to be inScottsdale, I'll be in French
Lick, but in the meantime, let'sgo ahead and get this episode
started.
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Ladies and gentlemen,
golf Week Amateur Tour the
podcast Talking about all thingsGolf Week Amateur Tour,
including interviews with tourdirectors, players and course
pros.
Now here are your hosts AtlantaTour Director, tim Newman, and
El Paso Las Cruces directorChris Rocha.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Chris, time is
completely flying by, Correct?
It's the end of August, we justhad Keywood just finished,
there's two regionals leftcoming up this coming weekend
and you know we're intoSeptember and about 40, 45 days
away from national championship.
I don't know where all the timehas been.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I don't either.
I was telling my members youknow when we're doing the
pairings, you know when youstart the the season, it's right
there on top and it's easy tofind.
And then when you startscrolling down and you realize
you're almost at the end, it'sunbelievable.
Um, so it, it goes by prettyquick, but um, at the end of the
day it's.
You know, it's been fun and uh,start looking forward to next
(01:59):
season.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, but you know,
dennis caught us both by
surprise last week when he sentus the email with the with the
data in it that we generally askfor in September.
I was kind of surprised when Igot it.
I can't believe that he knewthat I was going to be asking
for a year, real soon.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Right, it shows that
he pays attention to our podcast
, which is great.
You know, make sure that he'saware of it.
But you know we'll talk aboutmore of that data later, but it
was nice to see, yeah, the onething I'm upset with that kind
of again.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
You know you and I
are going to hell.
That slipped through the cracks.
You know we talked a couple ofepisodes ago about the.
You know the good things thatsome of our players are doing
outside of the tour.
You know the good things thatsome of our players are doing
outside of the tour.
And Joe Jaspers did it againand we didn't know about it.
He qualified for the US SeniorOpen and when this comes out
it'll be over with.
So hopefully we'll have somegood news Right, and I'm sure
(02:55):
he's going to do well.
He always does well.
So congratulations to him andgood luck, because we're
obviously recording this beforehe goes out to play.
But good luck to him andhopefully we'll have some good
news next week.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Right, right, but are
you really surprised that he?
Speaker 1 (03:12):
qualified.
No, no, I'm not surprised thathe qualified, I'm surprised that
we didn't pay attention to it.
True, true, but then again, when we missed Mother's Day,
nothing really surprised meabout us, anyway.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
We don't talk about
that.
We don't talk about that.
We don't talk about that.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
So we've been doing
this podcast for two years and
we've talked to a number ofdifferent people and players and
tour directors over the entirecountry.
One of the things I looked atrecently is there are a couple
of tours where we haven't talkedto anybody yet, which I was
really surprised at, andespecially surprised from our
next guest that his tour.
We haven't talked to him or orany any of his players.
(03:50):
So let's welcome in tourdirector from jacksonville,
donnie thomas.
Donnie, welcome to the show, bud good.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
Thank you guys for
having me and congratulations on
the uh podcast success.
You guys are doing a great job.
Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Thank you so much and
I'm sorry that you know we
haven't gotten down to talk toanybody in Jacksonville yet.
I mean you all have a reallybig tour, lots of really good
players.
You know lots of good thingsgoing on, so it's surprising
that we haven't had you on yet.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Well, again, I
appreciate it.
I appreciate it.
We are proud of our tour.
I'm proud of our members.
I'm proud of the two peoplethat I have helping me, Craig
Tomlinson and Tad Cruz.
They pitch in and really Icouldn't do it without them, so
(04:41):
I want to thank them foreverything they do for the tour
as well.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, I'm glad you
mentioned, you know, the people
that help you.
I don't know of any tourdirector who's doing this by
themselves and only bythemselves.
You know we can't run, you know, good tournaments without that
help.
You know, for me myself, obviously, I've got Jen, and you
know she's one, jen's reallyone who does all the work.
(05:04):
And then I've got you know AlShepard, who, I mean, I couldn't
do anything without him.
You know he's instrumental inmaking sure things go smoothly
on game day.
Chris, I know you've got help.
Yes, across the board.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah, tad, he really
helps me out on the front end
with all the setting up thestuff in the computer.
And then Craig, he's the day ofguy.
He helps me with the scoring.
And again, when you're runninga tour that's 150 members or so
you need help and they do afantastic job.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I mean any help on
the day of the event is great
help.
I mean I know we just said thata couple of times, but I
couldn't think of a better word, because you know, setting up
flags, picking up flags, checking in people especially
tee times for those directorsthat play as well Having that
help is just tremendous play aswell.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Having that help is
is just tremendous.
Yeah, because if you're runningt times, you know as tour
director you want to get outearly so that you can get in
early and and start passing outtrophies and and prizes and
stuff.
So, uh, yeah, having help beinga tour director that plays
that's uh, that's very important.
Um, I haven't played a lot oftee time events this year, but I
(06:27):
definitely like to jump in onthose shotgun days and get my
rounds in.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
I would much prefer
shotgun starts than tee time
events.
Most of our events this yearhave been shotgun.
We've had two that have beenback-to-back tee times and guys
come up to me and said Tim,we've gotten used to the
shotguns, can we just do them?
All the time I said, well, I'lldo what I can for you, but
sometimes there's nothing I cando.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Sometimes, you know,
some of our players think that
we can just call the golf courseand say, hey, you know, I want
an 8 o'clock shotgun you know, Iwish it worked that way.
I really do wish it worked thatway, but it doesn't.
You know, we're at the mercy oftheir schedule, their
membership and, but we'regrateful for all of our courses
(07:17):
and what they do for us.
They roll out the red carpetand I can't say enough about the
courses on our schedule thisyear.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
But you've got a lot
of really good courses With
being in Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
you've got access to
some of the best courses in the
country.
Yeah, and you know, jacksonville offers up some good
courses.
Since COVID, you know, golf hasexploded and so it's getting a
little harder to get in some ofthose Jacksonville courses.
But we're fortunate to play upand down the East coast of
Florida and we even go intoGeorgia, as far up as almost
(07:55):
into Brunswick Sanctuary Cove, osprey Cove we have a two-day
major where we'll play SanctuaryCove on day one, we'll play
Osprey Cove on day two Verypopular with the players because
they're just two phenomenalgolf courses and then we'll go
down to Daytona Beach.
We've got LPGA Internationalthere, you've got Venetian Bay,
(08:17):
plantation Bay so some reallygreat courses to choose from on
the East Coast of Florida.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
You didn't even
mention some of my favorites.
You had King and the Bear andSlammer and Squire.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yes, King and the
Bear and Slammer and Squire.
King and the Bear is closedright now for renovation.
They'll open back up again inOctober.
So I'm already in talks withthem to schedule a two-day major
with them and then we'll alsoplay a single-day event with
them next year in 2025.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Those are really good
courses.
I probably say this everyepisode that if anybody who's
interested in traveling youshould travel to whichever guest
we're talking to, butespecially where Jacksonville is
located, with so many toursreally within driving distance,
you know, three, four, even fivehours within driving distance.
That's right.
I mean, hop in the car oneweekend and go down and play
(09:10):
some of these courses, you won'tbe disappointed.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
No, absolutely not.
You know we've also got TPCSawgrass, tpc Stadium.
The senior tour is takingadvantage of having some, some
events there.
Um, and you know, if you're amember of one tour, you're a
member of all.
So, uh, this weekend I'm headedto uh keowa island, south
(09:35):
carolina, uh, to play in thetwo-day major there.
So you know, being a member ofthe golf week tour really opens
up a lot of courses to you thatthe general public just doesn't
always get a chance to play, andthat's the great thing about
being a member.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Exactly, but, donnie,
you've been a member for 15
years, right?
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Yes, sir, actually
probably about 18 years, I think
I first joined the tour in 2007.
I first joined the tour in 2007.
I was just pilling around onthe computer and I come across
the Golf Week Tour and Icontacted the tour director.
I played my first event down inOrlando.
I was nervous, as I could be,but after you play a few events
(10:18):
you realize that you're justamongst good people that enjoy
competing in golf and that'swhat the golf week tour gives
you the opportunity to do, nomatter what your skill level.
You know, we um, we've got guysthat are going to shoot 68 and
and we've got some that aregoing to shoot 108.
But the thing about it beingflighted, you know, each, each
(10:42):
flight takes their, their, uh,their game just as serious as
the guys that are shooting 68.
So it's competitive.
So for the person that has thatcompetitive bone in their body,
the golf week tour is a greatway to, you know, quench that
thirst.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yep, well, you said
you got guys that shoot 68.
And I'm going to bring up Lancefor a second.
Yep, you said you got guys thatshoot 68, and I'm going to
bring up Lance for a second.
Yeah, what's it like to be ableto watch this guy play.
You know, week in and week out.
And just so that everybodyunderstands, you know we talk
about Joe Jaspers a lot.
You know we talk about someother people a lot and you know
Lance's name comes up a lot, buthe's probably the quiet one
(11:20):
that people don't that I'massuming.
His index chris.
Okay, it's sick.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
It's minus 4.2, uh
huh I've seen that I've seen
players like that I had the uhfortune of playing with him last
year at king and the bear and,uh, he shot 62 and and I didn't
realize just how low he wasuntil it was me, craig Tomlinson
and Lance playing in threesome.
(11:49):
And I didn't realize how low hewas until we had played about
12, 13 holes and we had about a15-minute rain delay.
And we're sitting under theshed out there waiting for the
rain to clear and I looked atlive score and he was eight
under.
And I'm like what the heck?
He was eight under after 12holes and you know the
(12:11):
difference between I'll just usemy game, for example, in his
game, you know 190 yard shot islike me hitting my pitching
wedge.
You know he's going to hit thegreen from 190 yards to where
your average golfer.
You know you're going to bechipping after you hit your
180-yard shot.
You know it doesn't matter whatyardage he's out, you know he's
(12:37):
going to knock it up there towhere he's got a legitimate shot
at birdie.
And you know that's how heshoots, so low his, his approach
shots.
No matter the yardage he's,he's gonna knock it up there
pretty tight just be able towatch him play.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
A lot of people say
you know how do you get better?
When you get better?
By by playing with good playersand watching good players and
trying to emulate and do thethings that they do.
You know with, course, management, not always hitting
driver.
But to watch somebody likeLance play smooth swing, very
controlled, very deliberate, doesn't get too high, doesn't
get too low, just hits the ball, goes.
(13:17):
The next one hits the ballagain and picks up after three
picks up out of the hole.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Yeah, yeah, he's
going to compete in every
tournament.
He goes to Again that day.
Watching him shoot that 62, itwas a thing of beauty.
And but you know, that's thegood thing, that's the great
thing about the Golf Week Touris regardless of what flight
you're in.
Yes, you know, you're playingagainst other people at the same
(13:42):
skill level, you know, and themguys are competing, just like
those guys in Champ Flight.
They're out there grinding itout, playing shot by shot, and
it's just fun to watch theseguys and girls and how seriously
they take the game.
(14:02):
You know, we've had so manyguys that started out with us in
D-Flight, you know, and they'renow playing B-Flight.
You know, this tournament golfhas helped them improve their
game and that's what I wouldtell anybody out there listening
.
If you're looking for a placeto play where you can be
(14:27):
competitive against others ofthe same skill level, you know,
look us up at amateurgolftournetand and you'll you'll wind up
playing, enjoying yourself andmeeting lifelong friends exactly
how did you become a tourdirector?
Speaker 1 (14:43):
you said you first
started playing and then you
yeah I'll tell you exactly.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
I I had searched it
up on the internet and um found
the golf week tour and I signedup for an event, played the
first event, met the tourdirector and I came back home
and I told all my golfingbuddies about it because I was
very enthusiastic.
I had a great time.
(15:10):
It was so much fun competing.
Well, the very next tournament, two weeks later, I brought
seven buddies with me, and soyou know that caught the tour
director's eye and he said, hey,you know, do you want to help
me out?
And I said sure.
So what I started doing for himwas after the tournament.
He asked me to write up thearticle, you know, of all the
(15:33):
flight winners and you know, just write a couple of
paragraphs, you know, tosummarize the golf tournament.
And so I started doing that forhim.
And then he moved on and we gotanother tour director in.
Hoke Board was the tournamentdirector, and then Hoke had it
(15:53):
for three years and in 2010,when he could no longer do it,
he got in touch with Dennis andsaid, hey, there's this guy
named Donnie Thomas.
He's a great promoter of thetour.
You know, he would be the guyto to take over after me, if?
If so, you should talk to himand me and Dennis talked and,
(16:14):
and in 2010, I took over as tourdirector and my first event we
had 17.
So just like me going andpromoting the tour after I
played in my first event.
You know, as tour directors, wedo all we can to promote the
tour.
You know Facebook ads andemails and this and that, but
(16:38):
I'm telling you there's nobetter promoter than your
players.
Yes, I agree, if they'reexcited, they're going to tell
people and I love it when I geta new player in and they win
their very first tournament.
Yes, they are excited, they areecstatic, and this past weekend
we had a female player.
(17:00):
She came in and deflight, sheshot a really good round and
when she left there, I guaranteeyou she's told a dozen people
by now and at some point we'llreap the rewards of that,
because she'll be bringing newplayers in.
And so you know, if you can getyour players to go out and
recruit two players, your touris going to just blow up.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Exactly.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
So that's a lot of
fun to watch as well.
You know players that they comein, they get excited and then
they do just a fantastic jobrecruiting players for you.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
I got a D-play player
who joined this year and he won
his first event and he saidhe's been excited all year and
he was the very first person toget the registration in for
National Championship.
That's how excited.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
He was Nice, nice, so
yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
We were talking a
little bit offline and as you
became the tour director, youhad just retired from the
sheriff's office.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Yes, sir, I worked
most of my career.
I've been in law enforcementfor the Florida Department of
Corrections for most of mycareer, but for about four years
my last four years before Iretired I worked for the
Columbia County Sheriff'sDepartment in Lake City, florida
.
I can remember working midnightshift, getting off at 6 am,
(18:24):
packing up and headed to golftournaments on the golf week
tour, you know, and recruitedseveral players from the
sheriff's department thatplayers that are still playing
on my tour today.
That's crazy.
Most of our guys are reallygood guys?
Speaker 1 (18:38):
right, they are.
So do your guys know that youwere working sheriff's office
and work for department ofcorrections and do they not get,
do they not try and getanything over on you because
they?
Speaker 4 (18:47):
know you're gonna
catch them.
Yeah well, I, uh, I'm prettygood at uh reading people, so so
I, I, uh, I try to keep a keeneye out for that.
You know you, when you've got60 or 80 guys together and girls
, you know you're dealing withall kind of personalities so you
(19:07):
, you, over time, you learnthose personalities and you, you
try to make your pairings, forinstance, such that those
personalities uh favor eachother, you know yes, yes, yes,
yes, you're not wrong there.
You learn, you know who's yourfaster players, who's your
slower players, and then you,you try to do your pairings to.
(19:31):
Uh, so those people complimenteach other.
Yeah, you try, yeah, you try.
Yeah, that's right, that's thekey.
That's the key you try, yeah, and you know, something else
that that's, I think, was a gamechanger for our tour is live
scoring.
Hats off to Jamie who builtthat program, to to the live
(19:55):
scoring for us.
I can't thank those guys enoughfor what they've done.
And for those out there thatare wondering what I'm talking
about, live score is a way thaton game day, we, you know,
players can input their scoreshole by hole and they can keep
(20:17):
up with the leaderboard you know, right there on their phone,
you know they know where theystand, they know where their
skins are holding up, they knowhow much the skins are worth,
and I just think that reallyadded a lot to our tour when
LiveScore came along.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
It's a blessing and a
curse having that LiveScore,
because if you can't handle whatyou see you might crumble Right
.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Right.
Yeah, it's amazing how you hearguys some guys will check it
after four holes, some guysdon't want to see it at all.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
I'm the one that will
check it after hole 16.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
Yeah, and at that
point it's either too late or
it's just the right time, butafter that, I know it's got
ahead of you, Yep, but you knowfor when we, when we send our
report in, you know it.
It saves some time on the backend for us as tour directors
when we send our report todennis.
You know it helps that.
(21:15):
It's helped there, but it'salso made it interesting for the
players.
I can remember I think it was2017 when I first started using
LiveScore and I was telling myplayers about it.
You know I had some playersgrumbling oh, we got to put our
score in after each hole.
(21:37):
You know that's time consuming.
Well, now, if I was to tellthem we were going to take it
away they wouldn't like it atall.
You know they're hooked on it.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
They're hooked on it
yeah, yeah, I'm with you when we
first started using it.
Now I'd like to be on.
I like being on the golf course.
I have my phone around the setand the other thing, and now we
can't, we can't get it out oftheir hands yeah, you know
everybody behind the the scenesthat helps us out Dennis
McCormick, our president, hiswife, jennifer Jen Newman.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
You, tim Susan Geller
.
I can't thank all those peopleenough.
They've not only helped me out,but I mean I consider them when
I say lifelong friends.
I consider all those peoplefriends.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Donnie, I appreciate
it, but I don't do anything man.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Well, you do, yes,
you do.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
You saw Jen come in,
come in the room.
She, she does all the work.
Speaker 4 (22:36):
Well, yeah, I know
she's, she's a, she's a
go-getter, that's for sure.
But, um, you know, anotherthing that we have now that we
didn't have is that tournamentcommittee that, oh yeah, that
keeps uh, you know, looks overthe scores each tournament to
determine if there's any scoresoutside our flight parameters.
(22:58):
You know that that's a big help, that's a an improvement over
what we were doing, because, youknow, we have to protect the
field and the integrity of ofthe game.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
You know yeah, I
agree that that's been a big
improvement for us tour wide andI do sit on that committee and
help dennis and and the othertour directors out on that and
it's it's good to kind of seewhat's going on across the
country and how other tourdirectors out on that, and it's
good to kind of see what's goingon across the country and how
other tour directors aremanaging some of these issues.
And number one it gives usideas.
(23:31):
Okay, maybe we should try whatthey're doing and do a little
bit better.
Or you know what this personover here is doing doesn't
really work and so let's trysomething else.
But you know it also lets theplayers across the country know
that it's being monitored.
And so what's going on injacksonville?
Jacksonville's not doinganything any different than the
(23:51):
upstate new york or houston orcalifornia or whatever.
Every everybody is beingmonitored the exact same way and
using the exact same parameters.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
For us to make these
decisions and and you know, when
you're out there, uh,recruiting, you know that's one
of the things that you can tella prospective player you know to
to make, to let them know that, hey, you know, our, our
integrity is impeccable and andwe want everyone to know that.
(24:22):
You know we're not going to leta you know anyone come in and
and you know, do what I call ahit and run.
You know what I mean, right, um, and and all your players want
to know that and they want toknow that you're protecting the
field.
You know absolutely I agree.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
So, chris, you know
you gotta cut that out what
you're protecting the field youknow, absolutely, I agree.
So, chris, you know you got tocut that out what you're doing
over there.
You know you texted me while inthe middle of my tournament
this past weekend.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Hey, you wanted to be
part of the committee.
I was just following rules.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
Yeah, you and I
talked about that, and it's good
that tour directors across thecountry are seeing this and are
on board with it and not tryingto get away with it either.
That's the other piece to it.
The tour directors are on boardand they're not.
Well, I'm just going to letthis slide.
All the tour directors are onboard and they're making the
phone calls in, they're checkingthose scores so that it's done
(25:17):
right and done properly, whichagain is a testament to the tour
directors.
It's done right and doneproperly, which, which again is
a is a testament to the tourdirectors.
And, just like Diane said, youknow the the integrity of what
we're trying to do.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
And there's some
other safeguards in place that
that the national office does aswell, like having a deadline
for flight movement.
Yes, Okay, yeah, that deadlinefor flight movement keeps
someone you know, as we getcloser and closer to nationals,
you know, trying to manipulatetheir index so that they could
get in a lower flight for thenational tournament, and I hate
(25:50):
to even think that we have tobring that up, but you know we
do.
But that's just anothersafeguard there to keep things
the way they should be Right.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
I hate to bring it up
too, but that's no different
than than than any other leaguethat's out there.
That's right, they all have todo that.
The reason we have to do it isbecause people try and try and
get around just like anythingelse.
Yeah, yeah, I think we do do agood job of keeping that at bay
as best we can.
Yep, but there, there, butthere's no tour out there.
There's no league organizationout there that is running golf
(26:23):
tournaments, even at your localclub.
They're doing it, they'retrying.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
Everyone's doing it.
That's right.
It's not unique to us.
It's just a way to go out andsell your product and let
everybody know that, hey, youcome play with us.
You're guaranteed thateverything's going to be done as
best we can, the right way.
Do we make mistakes?
(26:49):
Have I made a few mistakes hereand there?
Of course I have.
I'm human.
But we do the best we can tomake sure stuff like that don't
happen.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
Out of 15 years, 18
years, what's been your best and
most memorable round.
It may not be your best scoreever, but your best round.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Oh man, university of
Florida probably I wasn't a
tour director was probably mysecond or third golf tournament
and I was back then.
I was still nervous.
You know it was a tournament, you know, and I would be in my
head more than I needed to be.
But we were playing at theUniversity of Florida and I just
(27:28):
had one of those days.
I shot 71, which is one overpar, and anytime somebody comes
in and shoots a low score, youknow you hear the guys hey, you
know.
You know you got to move up,you're moving up, you're going
to champ flight.
You know you hear the guys, heyyou know, you know you got to
move up.
You're moving up and you'regoing to champ flight, you know,
and uh, but it was just justone of those days and and those
(27:51):
guys, those guys and girls knewthat, uh, that was a, you know,
just one of those days for me.
My, my best round on tour wasone over par that's pretty good
round.
That's awesome yeah, it was justhitting those greens and and
two putting and and getting outof there.
Um, I haven't been able torelive that moment yet, but uh,
(28:15):
I'm gonna try to do it thisweekend at kiel well, chris, you
had a good round this week.
Speaker 1 (28:21):
This past weekend.
Was that your best round 75?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
Plus four tied for
the best.
Yeah, okay, nice.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Good round, but Don
he didn't win.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
I did not win.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
I lost by one.
Wow, somebody really playedwell.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
It happens, but I'm
the type that's going to play
the best that I can and let thechips fall where they may.
So that's what happens.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
That's me too, I want
to go as low as I can every
time.
If that means that at somepoint I wind up in champ flight
competing against Joe Jaspersand Lance Lacombe, so be it
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
Plus you get to play
with them, and then you'd really
get to see it firsthand ohabsolutely.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
It's amazing.
My Joe Jasper story is I don'tknow how many years ago it was,
but the weather wasn't all thatgreat and we were playing in
Palmetto Dunes on the Jonescourse and it has that par three
that goes out to the ocean.
I can't remember what hole thatis, but the wind was blowing in
(29:28):
30 miles an hour and the teeswere all the way back and a lot
of the guys were having to hitthree wood or driver.
And Joe steps up there on thetee on that par three, the wind
just gailing in his face, with afour iron and just launches a
bullet to about three feet fromthe pin taps it in for birdie,
(29:51):
he's like what's the big deal,guys?
What's the big deal?
It's just a four iron.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Oh my goodness,
that's great.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Yeah, he's a good
golfer.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Yeah, he is.
Well, you've got fourtournaments left this year.
If somebody could only come toone of them, which one would it
be?
Speaker 4 (30:06):
that would be
kenderloo forest and baldosta,
georgia.
Oh yeah, okay, it's, uh, it isa beautiful.
I put it right up there withtpc sawgrass.
It is that nice of a golfcourse.
They play the corn fairy playsa tournament there every year.
It's immaculate.
Um, it's, it's got everythingyou'd want in a golf course.
(30:28):
It's just hard to to describeit.
It's.
It's as top notch as you canget.
It's a beautiful place.
A lot of uh, hills and andvalleys and ravines.
Um, a beautiful, beautifulplace.
Um, Kinderloo forest golf clubin Valdosta, Georgia.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
I've heard good
things about that.
I've got a member who livesdown that way and, uh, he keeps
saying we need to go down thereand play.
I said number one, it's, it'sway too far for us, Right, he?
He says nothing but good thingsabout that course.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Yeah, it's a special
place and you know we play it
twice a year.
We'll play it early, like April, may, and then we'll play it
again in September.
And you know Dennis runs thesespiffs right for us tour
directors, you know, on ourmembership drives and stuff like
(31:26):
this.
And I won it one year because Ihad seven people join in
September just to play thatKinderloo.
Oh man, they joined the tourwith just two events left
because they wanted to competeat Kinderloot.
So that kind of tells you rightthere what kind of place that
(31:48):
is.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
Yeah, that's awesome.
Well, donnie, thank you so muchfor spending some time with us
tonight.
I really do appreciate it, andyou know we don't get to see
each other much, but I do enjoyour time together at National
Championship.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Yeah, I look forward
to seeing both of you guys there
.
And again, congratulations onthe success of this podcast, and
it's truly appreciated that youguys gave the Jacksonville tour
some time tonight to brag onwhat we're doing down here.
Well, you guys are doing greatthings so keep it up, all right
Take care.
Now Take care, bye-bye.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Tim, you know, know,
you mentioned it.
We're almost to the point wherewe've interviewed somebody from
every tour, which is awesome,um, but to get these tour
directors on, you know, it'sjust a little bit special,
because we get to hear what'sgoing on in their tours and, uh,
give them the spotlight for asecond yeah, and donnie's been
around for for for a for a long, long time.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
And you know, as I,
as I said in there, it's hard to
believe that we haven't hadsomebody from Jacksonville tour
on over two years.
Not not just, not just Donnie, but go back to our episode a
couple weeks ago when I said wehad a 62, it was Lance Right who
we forgot, and it's kind offunny how that kind of plays
(33:05):
into things.
And so, lance, sorry we forgotabout you, but we didn't really
forget about you and you knowyou're definitely due and you
know we owe you a segment onhere.
So whenever you want to come on, obviously we're happy to have
you on the Jacksonville tour.
(33:25):
They do a lot of good things.
Good things, I mean, they got alot of great courses.
Donnie's a great tour director,like I said, he's been.
He's been around for foreverand as a retired sheriff and and
correctional officer, I I canimagine nobody gets away with
too much stuff down there oh,I'm pretty sure it's a tight run
ship over there with that.
(33:47):
Yeah so we've got, uh, you know, two regions coming up.
You know we we've talked aboutalready, you know, uh, kea would
just wrapped up this pastweekend, so that we're down to
two.
You're heading off to scScottsdale.
When are you leaving?
Speaker 2 (34:03):
We're leaving
Wednesday Going to do this thing
called Wolf Creek with the boys.
It's kind of like a water parkretreat, kind of spend some time
with them.
Thursday and then Friday I gota practice round at Greyhawk
Talon course, and then Saturday, sunday, is a tournament.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
Have you ever played
at Greyhawk?
You ever played at Greyhawk.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
I've played the
Raptors course, but not the
Talon I played.
Raptors last year.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
You know what I love?
Those two courses, love them.
Yeah, so can't wait, you know, before the kids, you know, got
older and went off to college.
You know, Jen and I used to goout to Scottsdale for a week and
took lessons and played allover the place and, Greyhawk, it
was some of our favorites.
(34:46):
One time we were playing thereand you could see a sandstorm
coming in and I said, because wewere on 18th hole.
And she said, well, we shouldjust pick it up and go.
I said, Dom, I got to finishthis hole, it's 18.
We just need to finish and getover with.
And we, literally we finishedthe hole, drove the cart over to
(35:09):
our car and got in the car justas the sand started pelting us
and we were in there forprobably about half an hour.
And if you've never been in oneof those sandstorms, I'm sure
that you have.
Sand gets everywhere, I mean it.
It, it gets into the car, it's,it's, it's, it's.
Oh, yeah, you, you, you'retasting it.
(35:30):
I mean it.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Oh my gosh, but it
Over the course of the weekend
you're playing.
You know three really goodcourses.
Yeah, I am Honestly TPC.
I'm more excited for championscourse and stadiums course,
because it makes me think alittle bit more.
So I'm excited for that one,and the fact that I had to miss
(35:53):
it last year kind of has alittle itch ready to go?
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, we'll take it
easy.
Don't hurt yourself, don't makesure that back's in good shape.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
I've been drinking
plenty of water.
I think we'll be okay.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
When we had Gabe on
earlier in the year, you know we
talked about that championscourse and how that's kind of
really kind of underrated.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Right, yeah, it is.
It makes you think more thanstadium, because stadium you can
, just you can hit it, and ifyou know some holes, if you're
right or left, you're still okay.
But, champions, if you're rightor left, there's no, there's no
help for most of the holes.
So, uh, it makes you really putaway the driver and figure out
(36:34):
what you want to help.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
the tee box Is your,
is your uh foursome already done
yet.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
But I'm interested to
see who I get, Because I know a
bunch of Arizona guys.
So if I get Arizona guys it'sgoing to be a lot of trash
talking.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Yeah, there was
somebody else.
There's somebody I know who'splaying that I meant to tell
Gabe to pair you with.
I can't remember who it is.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
You better get to him
quick, jamil.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
Jamil.
Edward, remember we had yeahtexted.
You got Gabe's number versusjust text him right now.
Tell him you want.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
You want to be paired
with Jamil but yeah, I mean
we're gonna have a good time outthere.
You know, we do a differentcontest every year.
We started off with really ElPaso versus Arizona and then we
kind of split everybody else.
But we did the map and thewestern states have almost the
identical amount of players asevery other tour.
(37:33):
Right, so we're doing thewestern states versus everybody
else.
That's awesome.
So three, the top three lowestscores each day from each flight
, um, get you know theircombined scores and then whoever
has the lowest total at the endwins and uh, it's a lot of fun.
You know things to do like that.
Uh, incorporating the way I do,I do par three total instead of
(37:57):
CTPs, but we're gonna do thatas well.
Um, and who knows what thefuture holds?
Maybe we'll do a two-man likewe do at Nationals one year.
We'll see.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
Yeah, well, you've
got, you know, 178 players out
there.
So how does this actually work?
I know you've got half thefield on stadium day one, the
other half on champ, and thenyou flip it which, correct?
Which flights are which?
Then you flip it which, correct?
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Which flights are
which.
So I believe this year it'sChamp and D flight together and
they start on Champions course.
Okay, and then A, b and C willbe on stadiums to start up.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Okay, yeah, that's
really all you can do and it's
great that there's those twocourses and you can do that.
You know when we did theregional at Whistling Straits
that one year I'd asked if wecould do, you know, straits one
day and we're half half fieldingStraits one day and the other
(39:00):
half over at Black Wolf Run.
But they didn't want us takingup the straights course for you
know, for two days in a row Forthe whole day.
Right, and you know in onesense, you know, on the
straights course I'm glad thateverybody got to.
You know, to do tee times thatway you really kind of play the
course the way it was meant todo and I think if you do a
(39:26):
shotgun there, number one whenyou've got to walk all the way
out to to as far.
Yeah, for a hole I would havebeen so mad, but but it is what
it is and but, yeah, I thinkplayers got a much better.
You know, is it?
You know, being a straightcourse, I think they've got a
much better experience.
You know, uh, with it with atee event, even though we were
there, you know, if you remember, we started at 6.30 in the
morning and it was dark when wegot off.
(39:48):
That was a long day, yeah itwas For you all.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
I'm pretty sure it
was a very long day.
Yeah, I got to sleep in alittle bit and show up a little
bit later because I was on thesecond part of the tea time.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
So appreciate you on
that.
There was one or two groups Ihad to really push around, you
know, to get them finished notmine.
Uh, uh, that's for sure you knowyou're gonna be in Scottsdale
and I'm heading to French Lick.
You know when I made myarrangements.
Yeah, I originally thought, youknow, I was flying into
(40:20):
Indianapolis or something likethat, but we actually fly into
Louisville, which isn't too farfrom Kentucky and the Bourbon
Trail there.
There you go.
The problem is couldn't get adecent flight in to be able to
go to do the bourbon trail onsaturday and uh, we got an early
(40:43):
flight out on tuesday becauseit's like you know, you're
flying in and out of hilton head.
you know you're, you don't.
You don't really go anywherenon-stop.
So you got to make theconnector and I'm always of the
mindset, especially when you'reflying during the week, you need
to be on that first flight thatway you know you're going to
(41:04):
get out.
And eventually you know you'llget home Right.
So if we can get there at adecent time on Saturday, no
delays, I may be able to getover to maybe a couple of
distilleries.
But I'm not holding my breathon it and I haven't let me know
how it goes.
I haven't mentioned that to Jenyet, so I'm I'm going to try
and keep her off of this so thatnot listen to the podcast.
(41:27):
You know, until next week after, after we get back, so we'll
see what happens there.
You go there you go.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Good luck with that.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
Yeah, exactly, I
think we.
I think we already know howthat's going to work out.
So, but anyway, I'm lookingforward to this coming weekend.
I know you are.
You know we're less than 60days out from national
championship and yeah it, yeah,it's funny.
There's a lot of things goingon in national offices.
They prepare for nationalchampionship, and I just
(42:01):
happened to have a conversationwith another tour director Maybe
it was Thursday, wednesday, thursday and Jen starts walking
in my office and we're talkingabout national championship and
she chimes in.
She says well, you know, I needto stop you two from talking.
You know you're making plansand Tim doesn't even know we're
talking about him and thepodcast and the things that
(42:21):
they're going to be doing yet.
So I saw your face, okay, sawyour face.
So you know there's thingsgoing on that we don't even know
about yet, right?
So the plans have alreadystarted, which to me, is great.
I hate the unknown, though I doas well, you know, because one
(42:42):
of the things I told the tourdirector I was talking about I
said you know, I'm not surewhere I'm going to be, but this
is what I do, know, right, Ijust know from history.
You know, on Sundays I'm outfor Sunday, just I'm out.
You know there's too much withme going on.
You know, thursday we've gotregistration and actually Jen
(43:06):
asked me what time we were doingthe live feed.
I said you know, chris, and Ihaven't talked about it yet.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
We have some ideas.
We're reading all the timeExactly.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
Well, no, this is for
national championship.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
Well, I know that,
but let's get through this
regional first.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
That's what I said.
I said, you know, we haven'teven talked about it yet.
And she said well, I need copy.
I need copy now.
I said just tell them we'regoing to be there.
Just Just tell them we're goingto be there.
Just tell them we're going todo it when the rope drops, so.
But I know they're working onit and so, again, that's
exciting.
So, as you're listening, understand that things are going
(43:43):
to be trickling out.
Go ahead and get registered andget paid, because you don't
want to miss it.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
That's for sure.
Right, I'm in the process ofgetting that done.
Know, you scolded me last time, but I'm in the process getting
that done.
So I'll be on that roster realsoon and then, uh, it'll start.
You'll probably start hearingsome knee shake once they see
that my name on that roster.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
I'm sure that's what
it's gonna be.
Oh, but it's, it's gonna be agood time.
I'm, you know, again we're.
I know you're.
You're excited and lookingforward to it.
I am, and it's going to be agood time.
I'm, you know, again we're.
I know you're excited andlooking forward to it, I am, and
it's almost bittersweet right, because it's what we look
forward to all year.
Yeah, really, the first, youknow, two weeks after, I think.
(44:33):
You know we all need a break, which is fine, but then the
anticipation starts for, youknow, the next year.
Speaker 2 (44:40):
Almost immediately,
most definitely, yep, most
definitely.
And it's just getting ready forall of that, and you know
having to go and do ourschedules once again, exactly.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
I copied you on a
text message this morning that I
got from Casey from the TampaTour, and I love these texts I
really do because it shows, number one, that players are
listening, but they're alsothinking about the rules as well
, right, okay, so I'm going togo ahead and I'm going to read a
text to you.
Hey, tim, this is Casey fromTampa tour.
(45:16):
I heard you on the podcast withRoger the rules guy.
You sound like you have a goodunderstanding of the rules, so I
have a question.
Maybe you can answer for me.
Well, I'd like to think I wouldgo to hand on it, but I think
you know when, when you canrecord things and and in case
you, sometimes you don't knowwhat we actually say on here.
So, but I do appreciate the theuh, the good words on that.
(45:40):
But anyway, if I'm standing onthe tee box and throw a tee
about four or five feet out infront of the tee markers, can I
use that tee as an alignmentreference point?
Thanks for your help, and Ijust I thought about it for a
second and I shot, shot him backsomething and again, use that T
as an alignment reference point.
Thanks for your help and I justI thought about it for a second
and I shot him back something.
And again, you know when I do,when I did that, I was thinking
(46:02):
Roger has told us, you know, inthe past, you know.
You said, you know rules andstuff that maybe we don't
necessarily talk about.
Okay, right, here's my first, here's my initial response to
him.
I said, yeah, that's a greatquestion.
My initial reaction is no, butI'm also thinking it has
something to do with the T's andthey're special because they're
(46:22):
not equipment and can be shared.
What would you think?
Now I know you got the textmessage from Roger.
What was your initial?
Speaker 2 (46:29):
Well, before I got
the response from Roger, I
initially said no, okay.
And the reason why I know itwas no, I knew it was no, no, it
was no, anyways, it was a no-no, it was a no-no Is because I
aligned myself, you know, withthe whole by looking behind it,
and I was told you can't, youcan't throw something out there
(46:51):
to help you, okay.
When I was told you can't throwsomething out there to help you
, okay.
When I was taught that, thatyou have to find a spot on the
ground or something that'salready there and you don't
actually put it there, and Isaid that's fair, fair enough.
So I already knew the answer.
And when Roger responded, I washappy that I knew the correct
answer.
Well, he sent a follow-up texttoo, right?
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Okay, so the
follow-up text was kind of added
some some context to it.
His follow-up text says I wasjust thinking that if, if I
walked onto a tee box and aprevious player left a tee there
, I should be able to use it asan alignment aid, why can't I
put my own tee out there too forthe same purpose?
Just curious.
And my response there wasyou're talking about two
(47:33):
different things, right?
Two very different things.
If a tee is already there, that's different than you
putting a tee there.
So my response was that issomething different.
So say, someone hits your teeshot and the tee is there when
you walk up.
You can use that as analignment aid.
Because, number one, you didn'tput aid because number one.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
You can't touch it,
or?
Speaker 1 (47:54):
move it right.
You didn't put it there and theintent of when that person hit
that ball was not to use a teamas an alignment right, so right.
But then roger came back andcasey, this is covered in rule
10.2.
If an object or mark is therealready, that's fine, but a
(48:15):
player cannot put something downas an alignment aid.
It's a two-stroke counting.
If they do and Chris, you and Ibingo, got it right we get our
gold star.
We do, we do.
But that's a good question.
And again, I love thosequestions, send them to us,
because again it shows thatpeople are listening and two,
(48:36):
that they're actually thinkingabout the rules and how
important they are.
So, casey, nice job bud.
Speaker 2 (48:42):
Right, and I mean
with the rules changing.
I mean I feel like the ruleshave changed a lot in the last
what four years maybe thatpeople might not even be aware
of the rule changes.
So definitely send us anyquestions.
We're more than happy to coverthem.
Speaker 1 (48:58):
Absolutely,
absolutely.
So we got the shirt contest.
This is the last week of August.
Get your shirts in and you needto be entered by Saturday.
Yes, yes, yes, be it Saturday'slast day to enter and we do
have some news.
(49:19):
We kind of changed the rulesslightly a little bit, you know,
to answer some concerns andsome emails and text messages
from you all as members, to makeit a little bit more.
How would you say, chris, fair,I don't know the fair.
We're open.
(49:39):
We're open and inclusive.
How about that?
We're open and inclusive.
Right, and, like you say, it'sour podcast, we can do whatever
we want there we go and whatwe're doing is, you know, we've
had two players that, out of theseven months, had won five of
the seven months, and so whatwe've done is we've talked to
(50:00):
them and we've told them, out ofthe months that they've won,
for them to choose the one shirtthat they wanted to go forward
with, and then, for those othermonths, we're reaching back out
to the people that either camein second or third place and
giving them an opportunity to bein the bracket contest with the
(50:23):
shirt that they came in eithersecond or third place, depending
on where they finished andwho's already in.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
Right, yeah, I mean,
you know, keep in mind, this is
our first time ever doing it.
Um, we want to do it again.
We don't want this to be theonly time we did it.
Um.
So, yeah, there are somegrowing pains and there are some
learning moments for you and me, uh, but I think this allows us
to have eight different peoplerepresenting their tours than
(50:54):
four, Four right.
Speaker 1 (50:56):
And that was one of
the whole reasons of doing this
was, you know, to get peoplefrom across the country in
different tours into this.
So we'll look at how we didthis moving forward and make
some adjustments for next yearor what have you.
But, um, I'm excited, that I'mexcited, number one, that we're
(51:17):
getting that we are going tohave eight different people,
maybe from eight different tours.
I don't know.
No, not, not, no, no,absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (51:25):
At least six tours,
cause I got two Cause that's
pretty awesome.
Speaker 1 (51:38):
So eight people from
seven tours, there you go,
hopefully.
So we'll see, we'll see howthat goes.
But again, get your, get yourshirt, entries in for the month
of august and, um, because we,we do again, we, we have a quick
turnaround, got it and yeah, have the vote and then we've got
the, the bracket that we haveto put together, and then it'll
be three weeks of voting in thebracket quick voting too.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
Like a week, a week's
worth of voting.
So get ready.
You know, even even if you'repart of the bracket, get ready
to start um, putting yourselfout there, because you're going
to need to collect all thesevotes that you can, exactly,
yeah it's going to be fun.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
A lot going on the
next, you know, 60 days, really
looking forward to seeing howthings play out.
And you know, as we, as we getcloser to the end of the season,
you know one of the things thatyou and I generally look at is
stats for the tour, things thathave gone on and you know we you
know we mentioned earlier whenwe were talking to Donnie we
(52:35):
missed Joe Jaspers qualifyingfor US Senior Open, us Senior
Amateur excuse me, us Senior Am.
I got my dates wrong.
The first round is on Saturdayso he won't be finished by the
time this goes live, buthopefully he'll still be playing
in the match play portion.
But obviously we wish him welland this is his.
(52:58):
He's qualified three of thelast four years.
There you go.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
I'm not surprised.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (53:07):
I really I'm not
surprised, especially being able
to talk to him and got to meethim last year when I had to do
his interview.
So he's a baller and good forhim.
Good luck out there, Exactly.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
Let's look at some
numbers that I'm not sure that
many people really understand, and so, for these, these just
are our champ flight numbers.
And so, for these, these justare our champ flight numbers.
It was the lowest score for theseniors in the history of the
tours.
So, out of 27 years, the lowest, lowest score recorded in
(53:47):
senior tour history.
Well, I mean, I know it becauseI see it, yeah, it's 64.
And that's been done twice, once by Chad Frank in.
Oh boy, chad Frank did that acouple weeks ago, in July,
wasn't that?
Speaker 2 (54:02):
Yeah, yeah, orlando
Falcons fire.
Yeah, someone was on fire.
Speaker 1 (54:09):
Exactly, and Randy
Ponty in June of 22 from
Louisiana tour at Oak Wing golfcourse?
Speaker 2 (54:19):
Yeah, there's a
Tamaka Trails one.
I played that course this year.
Yeah, you did, didn't you, that's not an easy course 65.
Speaker 1 (54:28):
That's pretty good.
But when we go over to thechamp side we've got low score
62.
And that's been done threetimes.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
Three times One as
early as last year.
Yeah From Andrew.
Speaker 1 (54:44):
Yeah, from Andrew
Buse.
Yeah, that was actually a yearago, august 26th, andrew Buse.
A year ago, august 26th, andrewBuse and Lance Lacombe did it.
You know who you know Donniejust talked about did it in
August of 22.
So just over two years ago.
But the first time it was donewas Jeff Allen from Myrtle Beach
(55:06):
and he did that on September16th.
Speaker 2 (55:11):
He did that in
September of 2016.
Well, look at the next ones, the 63s.
Speaker 1 (55:15):
You see those two
yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:16):
Champ flight, day two
, day three.
Speaker 1 (55:19):
Well, yes, so day
three was actually a 64, but
that propelled him to the win.
Yep, hb was a 63, lowest roundin national championship history
.
Yes, sir, that's solid rightthere.
But again, if you turn aroundand Genki Sadato shot a 64 the
(55:41):
very next day, which propelledhim to national championship.
Now you know I've talked aboutHampton Hall in the past and how
much I like it.
One of the reasons why I likeit is because it's so wide open.
Oh, I love Hampton Hall.
Yeah, and you put those champplay guys out there.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
I'm not shooting in
the 60s, but I think I shot
pretty well out there.
Well, why not?
I don't make enough birdies?
Not yet, not yet.
We're working on it.
We won't go there, we'recelebrating these low scores.
Speaker 1 (56:08):
Yeah, I mean you're
going to be just fine, seriously
.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
There's another
Hampton Hall day three from 22.
Speaker 1 (56:20):
Yeah, lance, lacombe,
lance.
Speaker 2 (56:21):
Lacombe 65.
Yeah, how about that?
Speaker 1 (56:23):
So it's these
Champlain guys?
It's no joke, it really isn't,you know.
No, I mean, you got JoeJasper's name has been showing
up there A couple of 64s, JeffWong 64 at Dolphin Head.
Goodness gracious.
Speaker 2 (56:43):
A lot of 67s, that's
for sure.
The list we got is 200 names,200 scores of Hello Park.
Speaker 1 (56:54):
Jeff Wong 10 times.
Speaker 2 (56:56):
Joe Jaspers 10 times.
Speaker 1 (56:58):
Matt Spruill from
Tidewater has been on there a
bunch of times.
Chuck Spears from LouisianaNorth we met him, interviewed
him.
Brian Quackenbush he qualifiedfor US Senior Open last year.
He's on there four times.
Will Morgan four times.
You say what, will Morgan?
Speaker 2 (57:15):
Four times.
Wes Stratter, yeah EasternNorth Carolina, yeah Six times
Six times Lance.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
How many times has
Lance been on there?
One, two, three, four, Eighttimes?
Hb's on there.
How many times?
Five times Five, I believe.
How about that?
Corbin Holt?
Yeah, I talked about him abunch.
Speaker 2 (57:38):
Out of those 200,
though, there's only eight that
are in national championship.
How about that?
And guess, out of those eight, which course has the most?
Speaker 1 (57:52):
Oh, it's got to be
Hampton Hall.
Speaker 2 (57:54):
Seven of the eight?
Yeah, all in the same year, yeah, but good, I mean good form
though, you know.
Right, two day ones, one daytwo and four day threes.
That's pretty awesome.
So Dennis was being nice to him, that's what it was.
He wanted to see fireworks, yeah, but you know what People
(58:15):
did it.
He's still going to make theshot.
Speaker 1 (58:16):
He's still going to
do it.
Right, you still have to go outand do it.
That's the other thing there,right?
So, but this is pretty awesomeand I'm glad Dennis sent this
list over.
You know, and some of the otherthings, that the record for a
number of wins in a year by aChamplain player is 14.
Yep, and if you think about it,on average, tours only have 12
(58:39):
to 13 tournaments, maybe 14.
Some will have more, butaverages, you're talking 12 or
13.
And for somebody to win 14,that's some good playing.
And that was done by JimGallagher in 2009.
He had 14.
That's some good playing.
That was done by Jim Gallagherin 2009.
He had 14.
And, as of right now, ourtattoo guy, luke Boehm, he has
(59:00):
12 this year.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
That's probably going
to be a new tattoo.
Speaker 1 (59:05):
Well, yeah, and that
would put him as a tie for
second all-time for number ofwins over the course of the year
at 12.
That's crazy.
That's a lot of wins over thecourse of the year at 12.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
That's crazy, that's
a lot of wins.
Speaker 1 (59:18):
It's a lot of playing
.
Yeah, I can't imagine that.
You know, even playing all thattime, you're not going to win
every event, right, right.
And we know Luke travels, yes, luke travels.
So, jim Gallagher, in 2009 heplayed 22 tournaments.
Jesus, he traveled a lot, heplayed.
(59:40):
He played 22 rounds okay andwins 14 of them yeah that's,
that's solid effort right there.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
I think the most I've
won in a season was four, so
I'm quite a waste, but it isnice when you win multiple ones
per year.
It is.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
Now I wonder how Ed
Monroe from Milwaukee did this
year, I know.
I mean I saw him do a bunch ofposts with trophies.
I wonder how many he won thisyear.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
No, it's just
pictures with trophies.
Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Oh man, ed, I believe
in you buddy, I believe in you,
wonder how many he won thisyear.
No, it's just.
It's just pictures withtrophies.
Oh, man, and I, and I believein you, buddy, I believe in you.
But yeah, I mean some of thesenumbers, most all-time wins.
Joe jaspers was 79, of course, again.
So 79 wins, man, man, thinkabout it Crazy.
(01:00:34):
And Joe's been with Dennis, Ithink, all 30 years, the whole
time.
Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Right, and seven of
those are national championships
, yep.
Seven of those are nationalchampionships.
Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
It's good to see
these numbers going back Because
, again, 30 years, seeing whatsome of these people have done
over that know, over that timeframe, it's impressive.
It definitely is, you know, tosay the least.
You know when Luke was goingfor his 13th win, he was playing
a tournament in Minnesota, playing against Matt Foch.
(01:01:05):
Yeah, you know, matt's asleeper man.
Speaker 2 (01:01:11):
He's quiet, he's
quiet.
He's quiet to begin with, butI'm pretty sure his golf game's
the same.
He'll just lull you to sleepand the next thing you know He'd
beat you by 20 strokes.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Yeah, I'm looking
forward to seeing him coming up
here in a few weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:01:28):
I'm looking forward
to it.
Wife's coming up so everybodygets to see what I have to deal
with.
Just kidding, not what I haveto deal with.
She has to deal with me exactlyevery day.
I don't know, I bless her heart, but uh, it's gonna be a fun
time.
I can't wait.
And I gotta get that name ofthat candy shop because I know
she'll love to go there pops, pops, pops, candy shop.
(01:01:51):
But I'm gonna forget, so I'mjust gonna ask you when we get
there.
Got a lot going?
Speaker 1 (01:01:54):
on.
I know you're going to have agood trip and you're going to do
well.
Obviously, you and I are goingto talk about when we're going
to be live on Monday, nextMonday, on Labor Day, yes, but
we'll talk.
Obviously, we'll talk beforethen and I'm sure that you're
going to do just fine.
Speaker 2 (01:02:14):
No doubt I appreciate
it.
I'm excited, Especially withthe score I shot at my last
local event.
It's encouraging so, because Iwasn't expecting that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
I do.
I expect from you all the time.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
Well, I mean, with
the way I was playing lately, I
wasn't expecting it.
We'll be all right.
I'm excited, I can't wait.
All right, man.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
It's good seeing you,
as always.
I know you're going to do well.
Tell Gabe and I know you and Italked, but I'm hoping that
there's a bunch of Atlanta guysgoing out there to TPC
Scottsdale.
I'm hoping that Gabe can putyou with with Jamil or, you know
, some of the other guys fromAtlanta.
(01:02:57):
You're going to love them.
They're great guys You're goingto have.
If you do, you're going to havea great time.
Oh, I'm pretty sure.
You're going to have a greattime anyway, but I, you know, I
just you know some that aregoing out.
There are a ton of fun You'regoing to love it.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
I'm excited, I can't
wait.
All right, my friend.
Tell them to come say hi, Iwill.
Will you enjoy yourself?
Speaker 1 (01:03:21):
Anybody who's?
Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
listening, come say
hi Always, always, always.
All right partner.
We'll talk to you soon.
Enjoy yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Take care and drive
safe, yep.
Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
Likewise yep likewise
you.
