With just 67 days until the National Championship, the competition is heating up, and so are the stories! In this episode, Tim Newman and Chris Rocha bring you a powerful mix of record-breaking golf, inspiring fundraising, and the camaraderie that makes the Golfweek Amateur Tour truly special.

We start in Arizona, where Gabe and his team are on the verge of hitting $10,000 raised for the V Foundation, proving once again that golf can be a powerful force for good. Then, we head to Louisiana to hear from Rod Baronet, who delivered one of the most jaw-dropping performances in tour history, rounds of 68 and 63 at Oak Wing, not only setting the lowest two-day score ever but also shooting his age for the first time at 65. His patient, strategic mindset is a masterclass for every amateur golfer.

Chris also shares highlights from his recent trip to Hawaii, including the unforgettable beauty (and challenges) of island golf. Plus, we give you the latest updates on regional championships, Player of the Month nominations, and the ongoing raffle for a brand-new set of irons.

Whether you’re chasing your own personal best, playing for a cause, or just soaking in the joy of our golf community, this episode is packed with the stories and strategies that make amateur golf competition so addictive.

All right, chris, I know you're back from Hawaii.
You've been back for a coupleweeks.
I don't want to hear you.
It's still island time and slowand hang loose and all this

Time is flying buddy.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
What are we going?

Speaker 1 (00:28):
to do.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I don't even know what to say.
I mean, you blink and it'salready almost the end of the
season.
I'm telling you, I say it everyyear, but as directors, as
we're getting registrations inand getting tournaments ready,
you start scrolling down the endof that list and it's relieved
because you went through anotherseason, but it's still kind of
sad because you don't want it toend.

(00:51):
You want to keep playing andhaving events and seeing the
guys and the ladies.
Yeah, it's a bittersweet moment.
I guess you could say.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, but we still got time.
We still got time.
We still got time, yeah, but westill got time, still got time,
still got time.
And, just so everybody knows, this is your last month for
Player of the Month, so if youhaven't got somebody in, get
them in.
Now's the time.
But we got a good episode thisweek.
One of these days, chris, I waslike we're going to have the

(01:23):
worst episode ever, so justdon't listen, or listen to see
how bad it is.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I think that should have sailed.
Is it Like the first fiveepisodes?
Those are going to be tough tobeat.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Yeah, they are.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I know, I know, I know, but we got good stuff.
We're going to talk with Gabeand his staff from the Arizona
Tour.
They've done some really goodthings.
We've got the lowest two-dayround in history of the Tour
we're going to talk about and inthe end we're going to get in

(01:56):
and talk to Chris, see how hisgolf game is coming along now
that he's back from Hawaii.
So stick with us.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Let's do it.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
Ladies and gentlemen, golf Week Amateur Tour proudly
presents Golf Week Amateur Tour, the podcast Talking about all
things Golf Week Amateur Tour, including interviews with tour
directors, players and courseprofessionals.
Now here are your hosts, timNewman and El Paso Las Cruces.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Tour Director, chris Rocha.
All right, tim, I'm back, soyou didn't have to be by
yourself for at least an episode.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Thank God.
Thank God, you know I don'tlike being alone.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
I saved you.
You know I'm rested.
It was a great time, great trip.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
I didn't get to surf.
What yeah Waves?

Speaker 2 (03:10):
were a little big.
But oh, stop for for being afirst-time surfer.
I no, I I didn't get to, butwe're gonna go back, so I will
do it then, all right all right,um, but you know it was a great
time, got to make some corememories with uh, with my boys,
which was nice.
It's just so peaceful, man,I've been to the East Coast
Beach, I've been to FloridaBeach, I've been to California

(03:35):
Beach, seattle's area but forsomething out there you would
think it's a lot of people, tourism, but it really isn't.
There's so many beaches you cango to.
You can find that one.
That's just.
You know, you and maybe two orthree other families, and
everyone's in their own littlearea and you're not fighting for
sand.
I guess you could say right, right.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
did you go to North Shore and and and look at the
look at the monster waves?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
We actually went to the North Shore and we stood and
got attacked by the monsterwaves.
Yeah, yeah, this is huge.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
This is huge.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
They were at least maybe waist high for me, and my
youngest is probably a littlebit higher than that, and he was
having a blast.
Of course I was holding hishand like he was flying away,
but I mean mean he was having ablast, which is which is nice to
see because he's he's a littlescaredy cat at time or two, so

(04:31):
that's all right, he'll grow outof it, but no they were pretty
cool, and it was at sunset too,so they're apparently a little
bit bigger when it gets close tosunset, so it was a good time
what course did you play whenyou got there?
played Royal Hawaiian, which islike they say.
It's like the Jurassic Parkcourse in the jungle.

(04:53):
Yeah, that one ate my lunch.
Lost three sleeves in the firstnine holes.
It is what it is and thenplayed um, oh, what is it called
?
I can't even think of it rightnow, colina.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Oh yeah, colina, yeah , yeah, yeah, I played that one
too.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
The Ladybug.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
That was a fun course .
I think I played that one intwo hours because there was
nobody in front of me.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
So you should take your time.
Take your time on that one.
I like that course.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
I tried to.
I just played so good.
I thought they were so good.
What can you do?

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Did you play 63 good?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
No, not 63 good.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
That's alright.
Let's talk about Arizona Tour.
I mean, they've got a lot goingon bud.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
They do.
They've got a lot going on.
They got their regional comingup.
But I mean, you know, like yousaid earlier, we got Gabe on
again.
He's probably been the onethat's been on the most, the
most, um, but he's thefundraiser that he does for the

(06:11):
v foundation, uh, year afteryear, is just impressive and I
love just picking his brainabout it because, um, just the
amount of money that they run orthat they raise for a great
foundation and someone that's,you know, kind of hitting home a
little bit, a little hard thisyear.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Hitting real hard.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, yeah, it just seems like you know, you've said
it before, Everyone's beentouched by cancer one way or
another.
And just to see the commitmentthat these guys have, and every
but don't get me wrong Everytour has a great commitment to
the V Foundation.
You know everyone does theirpart.

(06:46):
But to be close to $10,000 wasthis third year in a row maybe?
Yeah, I know for sure.
Second year is just remarkable.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
It really is.
Let's just go ahead and bringhim in, and let's talk about it.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, let's do it.
Our next guest.
He's actually pretty popular onthe show but he's bringing two
of his fellow friends on us forthe first time.
But I'm excited to bring him onbecause he is, year after year,
one of our top contributors toour foundation that we support
every year and he's alwaysrecognized.

(07:24):
His tours are always recognized.
But he does a lot of big thingsto help with that cause and not
only with the regional that hehosts.
It's just awesome to see thework that they do.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
It really is and the amount of money that they're
raising for the Jimmy V andtrying to get this cancer thing
taken care of and you know aswell as anybody else how it's
affected tour members, the tourfamily and people going through

(08:03):
it.
Man and getting Gabe in theArizonaours is really leading
the charge and I'm so thankfulfor that.
I am personally thankful forthem and him leading the charge
on that.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
For sure.
I mean, let's just bring themin and let's talk about where
they're at so far this year, because I hear it's pretty high.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Let's see.

Speaker 7 (08:25):
What's happening guys ?

Speaker 2 (08:27):
One, two, one more.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
You know those pop-ups right in front of my
buttons.
There we go.
Gabe, jordan and Dan.
Welcome to the show.
I'm sure you heard theintroduction from Chris, but I
can't tell you personally howappreciative I am for what you
all are doing and the work thatyou're doing in raising money

(08:51):
for the Jimmy V Fund.
As you know, the tour familyhas been hit hard by cancer.
We got to get this thingfigured out.

Speaker 7 (09:00):
Absolutely.
You know it's never been, it'snever hit closer to home,
obviously, than this season.
But having Dan and Jordan onboard really coming in beginning
middle of last season and thenreally jumping full board over
both feet this year, we're offto a great start annual 10 cup

(09:20):
shootout, which is one of thethe big events where we do a lot
of fundraising.
But that's just the lead-in tothe big one, which is a regional
championship at the end of theyear.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
So we're excited to talk with you guys about what
we've done so far yeah, I thinkyou probably would have made
more at 10 cup shootout, butsomebody bailed out on you some
sort of sickness or whatever.
I think he was more worriedabout you know where he was
going to finish in the flightstandings.

Speaker 7 (09:43):
But I don't know, not for nothing, but there's five
flights in our events, aseverybody knows, and the last
two years Arizona players at the10 Cup shootout.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
They've only won 10 of them.
Here we go, there we go.
Sir, I almost won your Sedonaevent, not even trying.
Okay, I think cup would havebeen a breeze I've never played
the sedona events, the golf orhorseshoes gracious.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
So game I just I just before you, before you start, I
do want to say I'm the one thathas to encourage you to come on
, because you know, chris saysI'm done talking to these guys
because they win the Ryder Cup,they win all these tournaments
Wow.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Wow, all right, all right.

Speaker 7 (10:36):
Not for nothing, but Dan just got back from Vegas.
He and Wally Nelson both tooktheir flights, so it's
contagious and you know, it'sjust one of those things.
Hey, look at that, that's anice little truck.
What's going on over there?

Speaker 1 (10:48):
So, Dan, did you hit any cows this time?

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yes, I did actually.
So I for those that don't knowon the way up there I was diving
up from Arizona to Las Vegasand I hit a cow with my car and
it'll be in the shop tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yep, you are going to share pictures of that.
I'm in Vegas and I hit a cowwith my car and it'll be in the
shop tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
So, yep, you are going to share pictures of that
If you want them.
Yeah, I got to see it.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
I'm more impressed that you continued the journey
in the cow car to Vegas.
That's good on you.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
I was lucky, I think, because I was in a small car.
I took the legs out and Iminimized front-end damage.
It just flopped onto the hoodof my car.
It was drivable.
It just doesn't look dirty good.

Speaker 8 (11:40):
You're going to kill it.

Speaker 7 (11:41):
You're going to kill it, I'm done.
We might need an edit the depthto kill it.
You're going to kill it, I'mdone.
We might need an edit the depthpart of the.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
That's funny.
Well, I think, Chris, we talkedabout the thumbnails in the
last episode.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
I think we have yours now.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
I think a cow is going to be in it.
Love it Anyway.
So tell us about the teacupshootout and how you all did
with the auction.

Speaker 7 (12:12):
So we're still waiting on final confirmation on
the numbers from the onlineauction itself.
So I think most of you know howit works for us is with these
online auctions.
They, they handle everything.
And it's one of our actual oneof our local members, Tyler
Woolridge, with Wire to WireGolf, and what they do is they

(12:35):
put a lot of packages togetherfor us and and then we get a
percentage of the sales.
But the thing that we've reallyfocused on the last couple of
years and Dan and and Jordan andI have all worked together on
this is if we are able to addpackages to the auction and Tim,
you helped us out with packagesin the past as well, but we

(12:56):
added packages to Seven Canyons, which was a huge course here in
Arizona.
And then you know the usualsuspects of like Verado, WeKaPa
and all of those.
When we add packages, we get thefull amount of the sale of that
package, minus, just, you know, processing fees.

(13:16):
So, just with the packages thatwe added, I'm expecting that
number to be somewhere betweentwenty five hundred and three
thousand, expecting that numberto be somewhere between $2,500
and $3,000, on top of the factthat we assume that we're going
to look at another maybe $2,000to $3,000 from the auction house
itself.
When you couple that with theraffles that we did during the
event, the giveaways you know,we gave away a regional

(13:38):
championship entry fee, a coupleof entry fees to that event for
next year, I mean, after takingout all of the expenses for
some of the packages and thingsthat we purchased for those
raffles, I really feel likewe're going to be able to clear
somewhere around $4,000 justfrom that one event.
Wow.
And if you add that, Dan Jordan, you guys can help me out with
this.
If you add that to what we'vealready got, you know, in the

(14:02):
purse, I think we're pushingseven grand 7,500 when all is
said and done.
And we still got, you know, athird of the season left to go.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah, absolutely.
We've got a goal set this yearfor $10,000.
And I think we're going to bepushing up close to that after
this event.
So now we've got reallygenerous members on our tour and
obviously, you know, a lot ofguys came in from the El Paso
tour with Chris and uh, you knowwe raised, we raised a lot.
It was a good event.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
I mean I will say you know, um, you all do the 50, 50
, every event and last year Isaw how successful it was.
So we started doing it thisyear and I'm not as ambitious as
you guys are with 10 grand.
So I started with uh 2500,which is still a lot, and and my
tour already surpassed that andwe still got four events plus.

(14:56):
You know the the regional thatthat's at tpc.
So things like that, once youyou kind of put where it's going
to in the players' heads andthe members' heads, it just
shoots off like a rocket.
Now we're able to contribute towhat you guys have been doing
nonstop.

Speaker 7 (15:15):
Well, the other thing , chris, and we haven't had a
chance to talk with you aboutthis, but we have a great
partnership with the El PasoTour and, not to go too deep
into the history and the weedsand all of that stuff, but I
think most of you guys know thatI started the El Paso Tour back
in 2012, I think it was.

(15:35):
And then you know, chris, andyou know they took it over and
it's just grown exponentiallysince I left.
So they've done a fantastic jobwith keeping that going.
It's just grown exponentiallysince I left.
So they've done a fantastic jobwith keeping that going.
But we built a great team fromthat experience and so we do our
Ryder Cup event.
This event at 10 Cup is always adual tour event, and then they

(15:56):
have a lot of guys that come forthe regional championship as
well.
So, chris, we haven't had achance to talk with you about
this, but Jordan and I had theconversation again.
I think you were a part of thatconversation or maybe we had it
at a separate point.
But, when all is said and done, before we go and, you know,
after the regional championship,because I know you've got a
good handful of guys that areplanning to be at that event as
well.
We're going to take probablysomewhere in the range of 500 to
$750 of what we've raised sofar this year and we're going to

(16:20):
add it to the El Paso LasCruces Chores.
No, you guys are a great teamfor us and we want to make sure
that not just you but yourplayers understand that we
appreciate all of the thingsthat they do in helping us with
a couple of events that we do,because they're a big part of
the two big events that we holdmost of our fundraising on.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Gabe.
That's awesome.
I'll let Chris talk here in asecond.
I know I do this a lot of time, chris, but what people need to
understand is the only timeyou're going to be successful is
if you have a team that'sworking together.
It's obvious from me, being anoutsider from you all, from that
perspective you all do workvery well together and you all

(17:05):
have a really good thing goingin.
You know el paso and arizonaand you.
You really should be applaudedfor it.
Go ahead, chris, you can talk.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
You're from el paso, you can talk now I was just
gonna say, you know, from bigbrother tour to little brother
tour, we appreciate it where'sthe belt?
Yeah, I was about to say Idon't see that belt anywhere.

Speaker 7 (17:31):
Jordan's got it, and I have a feeling it's lingering
around there somewhere.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
It's lingering.

Speaker 4 (17:35):
He's probably wearing it.
I have it set right over mygolf club so that way I always
remember Wow.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
So, gabe, we do talk to you guys a lot, and this is
the first time we've had Jordanand Dan on, so I kind of want to
hear from them a little bit onthis as well.
Absolutely, the courses thatyou all play out there.
For anybody that doesn't know, you guys are always on good
courses to begin with, and youknow, being in Arizona, in the

(18:08):
Scottsdale Phoenix area, inTucson area, there's a good
course every other block right,yeah.
And so when you go out there youknow you're going to play on
good courses.
But you've got I mean, here wego again, chris Some of my
favorites.
Oh yeah, that's your own.
All the time you spoke aboutWee Kapow, southern Dunes.
I love Southern Dunes, I loveWee Kapow.

(18:30):
Let's go right on down the list.
What are some of y'all'spersonal favorites that you play
?
And if you could tell somebodyto come out to Arizona and not
the regional, but come out toArizona and play one course,
which, would it be?
Seven games, that's tough, Iknow it's tough.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
I would have to say my favorite year after year
that's been top of my list hasalways been Oak Creek Country
Club up in Sedona.
That's probably been.
It's a destination course andit's always in absolute
fantastic shape.
I mean you get actual rough outthere versus a lot of the
desert courses we get, but it'sdifferent scenery, the weather
is always fantastic and thecourse is always in great shape

(19:13):
and it's one of my favoritesevery year.

Speaker 1 (19:16):
When do you all generally play that one?
What time of year do you playthat one?

Speaker 4 (19:20):
Usually around this time, sometimes May, june,
somewhere in there.

Speaker 7 (19:25):
So this year was added to the specialty of that
event because we were able tolock in Seven Canyons and the
timing of it worked outperfectly that we were able to
combine Seven Canyons and OakCreek Country Club into a
two-day major championship.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Okay, yeah, chris, that's the one you went out to a
few weeks ago.
Yeah, seven Canyons, beautifulcourse.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Awesome, chris.
That's the one you went out toa few weeks ago.
Seven Canyons beautiful coursereminds me of pain makers out
here in Rio Doso.
Gabe knows we'll get you guysout here and you can enjoy the
pain that it brings.
But Oak, what was it?
Oak Creek?

(20:03):
I don't want to remember thatcourse, that rough Oak, or what
was it?
Oak Creek, Oak Creek yeah, Idon't want to remember that
course, that rough couldn'tfigure it out, and then going to
a playoff and getting the roughand can't even get out of the
rough.
It's just very.
It's depressing, so I don'twant to talk about that.
One Adds to the character.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
So Dan, how about you bud?

Speaker 3 (20:24):
Yeah, for me I think most of the people on our tour
probably would say that two backis is like the air it's it's
the tournament to go to, if it'snot one, like you know, tpc
scottville for me at least, because it's a small little two
exit town off the highway downnear the border, and we take

(20:45):
over the town, for it's a resort, right.
So we take over the resort forthe weekend and they, the course
, is great to work with.
They give us free run of theplace, essentially, um, so
everyone stays at the resort.
There's not really anywhereelse to go down there, so
everyone kind of hangs out.
You know there's people bringtheir families and everything
like that.
So it turns into a vacation foreveryone and their families and

(21:09):
it's great to hang out witheveryone out, you know, not just
during the round but going outto dinner and hanging out at
night and things like that.
So definitely my favoritetournament every year.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
That's awesome, but, chris, do you want to tell them?

Speaker 2 (21:22):
It's not Tupac, it's Tupac.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
Tupac, it's Tupac, tupac actually.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
Oh boy, yeah, you know I hear the stories.
You know Chris tells us thestories because I know he goes
out to a lot of those torrents.
He always goes to Tupac SeeExcept for this year because of
COVID to back except for thisyear because of COVID.
He raved about the two-day hewent to before that he said he

(21:54):
would go back to that again.
It's okay to travel.
I know Arizona may seem outthere a little ways, but it's
easy.
Getting in and out of, whethereither Tucson or the 80s, it
really is probably one of theeasiest airports to get in and
out of.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Yeah, for sure.
I mean all those events I go to, I drive, Even though Sedona I
was a little overwhelmed on howfar it was after Phoenix, I
wasn't prepared for that, but Imean it's still a good time and
it's just different courses thanwhat we play here in our area.

(22:31):
And if you're from the EastCoast and you come out and play
desert golf, it's a completedifferent mindset.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
Especially this time of year when it's hot and it's
dry.
You don't want to get off thegrass, that's for sure.
The desert can have the ball.
It's yours.
It belongs to the desert now.
So let's talk a little bitabout the TPC Regional.

(23:01):
You all have been doing thisfor a number of years and
obviously you do a great jobwith it.
It's one of the largest ones wedo.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
You got 180, right 180 is our max number.
We're on pace to sell it outagain this year.
It's a bragging right for us,but I think if we can get over
the 160 mark if I'm not mistakenthat would make it the largest
or the highest attended regional, for I believe it would be the

(23:34):
seventh or eighth year in a row,so we're pretty excited about
that.

Speaker 1 (23:38):
Just so you know, we had 200 at Western Straits.

Speaker 7 (23:42):
Yeah, well, I guess that was that.
Yeah, but that was seven oreight years ago.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
That was 21.
That was 21.
20 was canceled.
21 was the first year we wereback.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
I think that year you were 240 at TPC.

Speaker 7 (24:00):
Yeah, we were at T40 for three years in a row, so
that was two years.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
And see that was a tee time event too.
So we actually the first day wedid two waves of shotgun at one
course and then two waves ofdouble tees at straights.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
And then you ran out of daylight 6.30, 9 o'clock and
you ran out of daylight andrushed the leaders because they
ran out of daylight and someonetook second place.
We won't say who, but he's onthis show, see.

Speaker 7 (24:43):
But as far as the regionals are concerned, again
off to a great start.
Again, tpc Scottsdale and and,um, um, andrew Yoder and their
and that crew out there, theytake great care of us.
Um, that's, you know, that'sfor us that's the signature
event and that's the one, um,you know, we do a Friday
check-in party at a really coolplace called putting world.

(25:03):
Uh, it's an indoor puttingfacility out there.
So they take care of us, tpctakes care of us, and if you
ever get a chance to come outhere, that's the event you want
to definitely come to for sure.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
But you know, the roster of players coming from
all over the place is huge.
I don't know, gabe, I'm sureyou've seen it, but for those
that have not, I mean playersare coming from literally all
over the place.
To that.

Speaker 7 (25:31):
And they always do.
Yeah, last year I think it was37 or 38 tours ever represented
at the event.

Speaker 1 (25:38):
That's awesome.

Speaker 7 (25:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
And they got the new sports book too.

Speaker 7 (25:43):
Yeah, they just opened a sports book right
across the street from theChampions Course, so a little
bit of extra to do this year.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
Way to go, chris, I'll be there on Saturday.
College football is thatSaturday, so I'll be there.

Speaker 7 (25:57):
Right, college football always kicks off that
weekend.

Speaker 3 (25:59):
We don't have any gamblers there in Golf Week Tour
no no, no, no, Mr Vegas I haveno idea what you're talking
about.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
I have no idea at all , talking about no idea at all.
So, jordan and Dan, you guysare in the same flight.
Jordan, you got some work to dobud.

Speaker 4 (26:22):
Yeah, yeah, it's been a busy year.
I haven't gone out to practiceas much as I'd like to.
You know I went.
I last year was probably someof the played some of the best
golf in my life.
I, after investing in a lot oflessons and improvement, improve
my game and after I I just oneof my most memorable rounds at
Verado, or one of our two daymajors last year, is going 79,

(26:44):
76 in the sea flight and and andjust lining it up moving up to
B flight.
You know, I think there's a bitof a mental hill I need to
climb over to get to kind of getback into that kind of game.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
But I definitely need to get out and practice more
too.
Just play your game because itis what it is.
Don't worry about what anybodyelse is doing.
We talked a little bit ago, chris and I did worry about what
anybody else is doing.
We talked a little bit ago, chris and I did.
Let's just say, you're 14, theway you get to you're 14 is
different to how somebody getsto their 14.
14 is a 14 is a 14.

(27:19):
Just play the way you play andlet everything else fall where
it falls.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
For sure.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
I think that's probably from a tour director's
perspective, seeing these thingsover and over and over again
every year.
That's probably from a tourdirector's perspective, seeing
these things over and over andover again every year.
That's probably the best adviceI can give somebody.
Don't worry about it, Don'tworry about the length, Don't
worry about anything else, Just, however, whatever your strength
of your game is, just play tothat.

Speaker 4 (27:41):
Yeah, absolutely, and that's something I definitely
need to keep in mind and justkeep working towards, and I know
I have that game in me, sodon't worry, dan, I'll be
catching back up to you.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
That's awesome.
Well, guys, thank you so muchagain for all that you do for
the tour.
I can't thank you enough.
I mean personally, especiallyeverything that's been going on
this year.
You all know who's touched andwe we got to get this thing
figured out Absolutely.

Speaker 7 (28:16):
And, tim, if I could, both, for both Dan and Jordan
Chris, do you understand this aswell the the new things, the
smaller things, that they'vefilled in the gaps, in that I'm
not very good at online stuffand, and you know, just back and
forth with with membership andthings like that, it's something

(28:38):
that you mentioned earlier and, chris, we've talked about it,
but the team that we've got outhere, not just with the El Paso
tour, but with the Arizona tourand you know the the West Coast
groups in general we understandthat we're a little bit further
apart from everybody you knowfrom each other than most, and
so the camaraderie that's beingbuilt out here is a really great

(28:58):
thing, and we want to see itcontinue to grow, and so we
invite anybody that's willing tocome out and share ideas with
us.
Come out and join our events andsee how we do things a little
bit different maybe, but Chrisand I talk about this all the
time the best ideas are the onesthat are taken from other
directors and just added onto, and that's what we do a lot

(29:19):
around here.
And so for those directors thatsee this and their membership,
that see this, that shared theonline auction that we were
doing, you know, encourageplayers to travel to our
regional championships andthings like that.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
It's much appreciated and we hope to see as many of
those guys out here as we cancome Labor Day weekend Second.
But you know, Gabe, I will saythis you know, part of the
reason why you get so many guysout there is because of the
hospitality that you all provide, Right?
Yes, yes, TPC Scottsdale is agreat course, Sure, I mean, how
many great courses are we on?
We're on a lot across thecountry, right?
But you know, they come outthere because of the hospitality

(30:02):
, because of the way you run atournament, because they know
the quality event that you'regoing to provide to them, and
that I don't think is talkedabout enough.
We joke about the numbers andthis, that and the other thing,
but there's a reason why thosenumbers are those numbers.

Speaker 7 (30:21):
Right, great, I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Anyway, Chris, you got any last words.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
Just beware, I'm coming for you both.
Anyway, chris, you got any lastwords?
Just beware, I'm coming for youboth.

Speaker 7 (30:35):
We're looking forward to having you out here again.
My friend, glad you're feelingbetter and again with all of the
I can't say it enough and I'llsay it over and over again For
anybody that helped out withthat online auction.
We really appreciate it.
The fundraising is a big thingthat we do.
We've got a couple of memberswhose family members are dealing
with it.
You know dealing with cancerright now.

(30:55):
It's nonstop.
So the, you know the fightcontinues, you know every day
and and you know we're we're notgoing to keep, we're not going
to stop, we're just going tokeep doing what we're doing and
try to come up with ways to doit bigger and better each year.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
So keep up the good work, guys.
We'll talk to you soon.
Let's take a break from theshow to hear about Strixon's ZX
Mark II irons.

Speaker 9 (31:16):
A great iron set needs more than good looks.
It's got to be fast and got tobe pure, but good looks never
hurt either.
The all-new ZX Mark II ironsfrom Strixon.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
Tim, it's always great to have Gabe on and you
know he was really excited whenwe asked him and to get his
assistance on there as well, because they've been doing a lot
of good work over there helpingthem out, especially with these
fundraisers that they're doing.
He just continues to impressyear after year and, you know,

(31:53):
just trying to catch, even catchup to him, it is difficult as
it is, uh, but I mean, they justalways have great ideas and I
just think it's cool to see what, how much they raise, how
generous that tour is yeah, it's, it's incredible and and you
know you have to be able tocatch up to him, man, he's like
ricky boggy.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
Ricky bobby, he wants to go fast, right, fast and
quick and and do it all, but youknow to to to be able to come
close, hitting that ten thousanddollar mark.
That's huge.
Um, uh, you know I love whathe's doing, like you said, you
know I love the generosity ofthe tour, uh, and and all those
things, and, um, I love thegenerosity of the tour and all

(32:33):
those things and he's doingreally good things.
And again, what's going tohappen?
It's going to get even biggerwith the regional coming up here
in a couple weeks.
Just remember everybody, there's only two regionals left
and my guess is both of them aresold out by now.
So if you're maybe getting onthe wait list, if it's not sold
out, grab one of those lastspots.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
Yeah, definitely.
I know TPC still has a couplespots left, but it's the last
couple chances to get aNationals paid for if you're
interested in that, and it'sjust.
They're fun events.
Both of them are fun eventsregardless of whether you go to
the East Coast or the West Coast.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
Yeah, it or Midwest, midwest or West Coast.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
Still East Coast to me.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Oh, come on, Get out of here.
Just because you're West Coast, you know West Texas, I guess
everything else is East Coast ofWest Texas.
I'll give you that.
I'll give you that.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
When you've got to drive 10 hours to find another
town east, it's East Coast now.

Speaker 1 (33:33):
All right, We'll go ahead.
And it's kind of like I keepmaking Jen shorter, you keep
making finding the next town alittle bit longer.
Oh man, so I know you've beenback for a couple weeks and you
hopped on.
You said you're still in Hawaiitime.
But man, time is flying by.

(33:53):
It is Over the last coupleepisodes we've had some guests
on with some really low scores,Whether it was Kurt Lambert with
a 64 from Minnesota or LanceLacombe with his 63 out of South
Florida.
But let me tell you what, justwhen you thought that you've

(34:16):
seen it all, we've got a reallygood guess for you today.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
Yeah, it just seems that we keep getting emails of
these low scorers.
I mean, I had a low score at mylast event too, but we'll talk
about that later.
It was pretty crazy.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
Well, hold on a second now.
You didn't happen.
You had a low score, completelydisregarding the other end of
the spectrum.
You and I are going to talk.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
We're going to have a conversation.
I'm confused on what that means.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Well, when we got the email for this gentleman, I was
surprised and you know we'lltalk about it, but apparently
this is the lowest two-day scorein the history of the tour and
you would think, at 30 years and25 years with a senior tour,

(35:07):
obviously there's always goingto be a lowest two-day score
ever, but this is really low.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
So let's go ahead and welcome in Rod Baronet and Trey
Coker from the Senior LouisianaTours.
Well, rod, thanks for joiningus bud.

Speaker 6 (35:26):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
Thanks for training here.
So tell us about yourtournament.
At Oak Wing you went 68-63.
When Dennis sent me that email,I was shocked.
So tell us about the rounds.

Speaker 6 (35:45):
The 68, that's my home course.
Oak Wing is my home course.
I was pretty comfortable tobegin with.
The 68 was a really goodball-striking day and the greens
were a little slow and I couldnot get the putt.
I couldn't get a putt to thehole all day long.
So Sunday when I came out, mywhole mindset goal was just try

(36:07):
to get everything to the holeall of them and I hit it really
good and apparently I got nine.
Get everything to the hole, allof them and I hit it really
good and I apparently got nineof them to the hole.
I had a couple two putt birdiesbut I made made six or seven
good putt, really good putt yousaid, like two putt birdies yeah
chris, that's.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
That's not a term you hear very often.

Speaker 7 (36:31):
No.

Speaker 6 (36:35):
Well, we had a downwind par 5 on the front and
then we had a downhill par 5 onthe back.
I was able to reach the slopeon both of those.
I think it was a 3 rescue onone of them and a mini driver on
the other.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
Three rescue on one of them and a mini driver on the
other.
So you know, on the first daywith the 68, any bogeys in that?
Or are we talking two rounds ofbogey, three 60s?

Speaker 6 (37:06):
No, I'm not positive, but I think I made one bogey on
Saturday.
Okay, it seemed like I had.
I mean, I think I'd have made anote of that if I played bogey
free for the whole weekend, butI think I'm pretty sure I made
one.
I made five bogeys in the onebogey.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
That's still amazing.
And you know and I bring thisup rod just for for for effect
here you know, as golfers itdoesn't really matter what we
score.
Um, let's just say you chrisshot a really low score for him
the other day at 79.
He's a little bit later he'sgonna tell me it was a 79, but

(37:49):
it could have been a 73.
And a couple weeks ago we hadKurt Lambert on from the
Minneapolis tour.
He shot a bogey-free 64, and helegitimately said it could have
been a 61.
So on any of your rounds, whether it was 68 or 63, what do

(38:11):
you think the lowest it reallycould have been or should have
been?

Speaker 6 (38:17):
Well, it should have been exactly what it was.
It's golf man.
I had some violent lip outs, but a couple things could have
gone.
I mean, during the Sunday roundI made a 35-footer, which is
the longest putt I had that day,but I probably had 10 or 11,

(38:44):
maybe 12 looks inside of 15 feet.
Any of those could go RightPlaying on grass.
They don't do what they'resupposed to all the time, so a
couple more could have went.
But I hit the ball really goodand I struck a lot of really
good putts, but they never allgo in, not for me anyway.
I could have made three or fourmore.

(39:07):
I could have missed three orfour more, chris.
How did that happen?
Three or four more?
I could have missed three orfour more.
So it was a 68.
On the 68, I had at least fivethat I know of dead in the mouth
, three inches short, I mean andI'm a pretty firm putter by
trade and that's hard for me totake.

(39:29):
Leaving one short is just.
I'd rather be in bed with ahigh fever than than what.
You butt short.
It's just painful for me andthat kind of set up Sunday.
So I guess we worked out.

Speaker 1 (39:44):
Well, chris, I'll, I'll, I'll leave it.
I'd rather be in bed with afever at that.
But you know, brian, I'm goingto steal that from you if you
don't mind.
I love that line.
But, chris, it's also tellingthat you know his longest putt
was 35 feet.
I mean, could you imagine that?
Could you imagine playing tworounds with your longest putt
being 35 feet?

Speaker 2 (40:07):
Yeah, I only have that at, like putt, or you know,
bob's Show things like that.
Everything else is longer thanthat.

Speaker 6 (40:16):
I wish that was the case all the time.
It just happened to be the casethat weekend.
It was a good ball striking.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
So, rod, what's your lowest round ever?
61.
Wow, and where was that?
It was at Oak.

Speaker 6 (40:30):
Wing.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (40:32):
Unfortunately, I was 60 years old when I did it, and
so I didn't shoot my age thattime.
This time, it was the firsttime I shot my age.
I'm 65, and the 63 was thefirst time I shot my age.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
Oh my goodness, Rod, that's amazing.
Congratulations on that and, trey, welcome in.
Glad we got you back, but I'mnot sure if you want to keep
having tournaments at Oak Wing, because we kind of know what the
result's going to be.

Speaker 8 (41:01):
We have our club championship there as well and I
call it the Rod Baronet Open.
He's a wonderful player.
He's a great friend of mine.
If you can't tell, he's one ofthe best competitors you ever
meet.
He doesn't like to second place, he competes, competes,
competes.
So as he kind of he called methe other day, I actually texted

(41:24):
and we were talking about hewanted to do the scorecard so he
could kind of refresh hismemory.
So he plays the course a lot,so I could see where he'd be
kind of refresh his memory.
So he plays the course a lot,so I could see where he'd get
kind of confused.
But I said, look, you've got a50-50 chance of guessing what
you made birdie or not.
So you birdied half the hole.
So that's not too hard of ascorecard to remember.

Speaker 1 (41:44):
Yeah, but Trey, right now you've got him in the point
standings.
I don't know how much longerthat's going to hold up for you.

Speaker 8 (41:53):
He don't play enough.
He needs to play more often.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Yeah, but all he has to do is win right.
That's right, you know.
That's the other thing.
You know, Chris, this is, andit's amazing.
Every time we have these ChampFlight players on that are
shooting these great scores, does it seem like they could all
be the same person?

Speaker 2 (42:19):
They could, I mean.
What I've noticed, you know, with all these players, is their
attitude towards the game.

Speaker 1 (42:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:27):
Like Rod said, you know it's golf, anything can
happen.
And sometimes you know putts goin or putts don't, and you move
on with your day and it is whatit is.
And that's the inspiring part, because anybody can hit a golf
ball.
Whether you're plus or you'reTim, you can still hit a golf
ball too.

Speaker 1 (42:46):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (42:48):
But it's their attitude, you know.
And you see some champ guysthat get very upset when they
hit their approach shot and it'sfive feet away from the hole
instead of four feet and a half.
And then you see guys like Rodthat come in and he's just
saying you know, it's golf, theputts will roll in or the putts
won't.
It is what it is.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
Yeah, and I kind of wonder sometimes if that's a a
trait of somebody that's gonnathat that's really gonna be good
at golf, right I mean and I Iliken it back to a lot of the,
the, the mid to highhandicappers that we talk to um
all the time, um, you know, ifthey get upset, if, if they've

(43:29):
got, you know, double bogey here, double bogey there and maybe
kind of lose focus of the oneshot at a time.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
Right.

Speaker 1 (43:38):
Rod, what's your approach when you go into a
round, a competitive round likethis?
Are you somebody who thinksyour way around the course?
Take Oak Wing out.
You know where you play thereall the time.
What's your approach going intoa tournament?

Speaker 6 (43:57):
Well, depending on the length of the tournament, if
it's a one-day event, you kindof just go with what you got.
If it's a three-day event, thefirst, especially the first day
my mindset is just don't lose atournament today.
Just stay relevant.
Hit fairways, hit greens Ifthey go in, fine.
If they don't go in, stay awayfrom the bad stuff and stay

(44:20):
patient.
Don't force a bad situation.
If I don't have a good number,if I don't have a good pin,
whatever it is, if you shoot 68,you can make a lot of pars yeah
, a lot of pars, yeah, a lot ofpars.
And so you don't have to bogey, you don't have to have a birdie
putt on every hole.
You can two putt from 20 feetand stuff like that.
So, going into uh, going into amulti-day tournament, the

(44:43):
mindset's a little differentthan playing just a one-day
event.
Uh, one-day event, you got topay attention what's going on
around, you see if you got toput the, the pedal to it, or
what you got to do to win or togive yourself a chance to win.
And that's all I've ever doneis, I've always tried to give
myself a chance to win.
I've had a lot of success, butI don't ever go.

(45:04):
I don't ever hang winning onone swing.
I try not to.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
You know, aside from a playoff situation, it's very
calculated, it's always meantyeah, and Chris, as I look at
Rod's scores again, you knowjust kind of like we talked
about with Lance a couple weeksago, the variation right of

(45:30):
scores, of scores, the spread ofscores.
He's got one round of 80, andpretty much everything else is
60s to 75.
So you're talking about it.
I mean it's very, veryconsistent.
A bad round is 77.
A bad round is 78.
And I put that in the airfingerscore.
It's a bad round is 78.
And I put that in the airfinger score.

(45:52):
It's a bad round.

Speaker 2 (45:53):
When your dispersion scores like that, it's really
telling about the mindset andthe skill of the player.
Yeah, it definitely is.
I mean, an 80 for me is a goodround.

Speaker 6 (46:10):
Well, everything's relative.

Speaker 8 (46:14):
If it's really cold, it's a good round of a ride.
Just so you know, it'd have tobe really cold though.

Speaker 6 (46:19):
Yeah, I don't like cold.
Trey and I played a lot oftournaments together and I just
I was like man, as long as it'snot cold, I'm in.
And we went.
I remember you.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
I think you and me are going to be good friends now
.
And we went, I remember you.
I think you and me are going tobe good friends now.
I'm just saying.

Speaker 6 (46:34):
Who knows.
Well, Trey and I went to atournament I think that often
there's a four ball.
We played the practice round inshorts and short sleeves and by
the third round I had all myclothes on.
That I brought.
I had on some of Trey's clothes.
It was so ridiculously cold Icouldn't even take it back and
it was miserable for me.
And we played in college.

(46:54):
We both played in college and Idon't know if you guys played
in college or not, but you playin some really lousy weather,
bad, bad weather, and I got fullof it.
I just don't like it anymore.
I don't want to play in thecold.
I don't really play in thewintertime.
I play from from early march toabout september, october, when

(47:15):
it starts getting really nice.
No one's at the golf course.
Golf course in great shape.
It's cold.
I ain't going.

Speaker 1 (47:22):
I'll go fishing or find something else to do yeah
right, I don't play very muchanymore, but when I was playing
a lot, I was the same way.
If it's cold, I'm not going fortraining, I'm not going you
know, because I played not going.
You know cause I played enough.
I, you know I didn't have tosubject myself to, to to bad
weather.
I mean just because to me it'snot miserable, it's not fun.

Speaker 6 (47:43):
It's beyond miserable for me to be cold.

Speaker 8 (47:46):
There's too many good days to go play.

Speaker 1 (47:49):
Especially where you guys are.

Speaker 6 (47:57):
Although you know right now I'm sure it's pretty
hot and steamy down there.
We actually had three days ofreally nice weather.
Last three days we had a northwind, which is on you before in
the in the summertime but uh, itwas in the low nineties and the
humidity was really low.
It was nice, nice.

Speaker 1 (48:09):
So, so, Rod, what, what's your favorite course?
Uh?

Speaker 6 (48:15):
Uh, all down.

Speaker 1 (48:16):
Can't say Oak wing.

Speaker 6 (48:17):
Uh, probably show Creek in Alabama Uh where is
that?

Speaker 1 (48:24):
Is that um?

Speaker 6 (48:25):
Birmingham.
I believe Uh, it's a.
Uh, it's an.
Old style golf courses, nocarts.
Uh, everybody has caddies.
Old style golf course.
It's.

Speaker 1 (48:34):
Uh, and I I hadn't played it in 20 years, but
that's probably my fondestmemory of playing a golf course
Trey going through your pointsrace, you've got a bunch of
really good champ players.
What's it like on a week-in,week-out basis in champ play?

Speaker 8 (48:59):
Talking about.
As far as competition, yeah, yeah, we have on the rod, we
have Wendell Akins and then KateHebert, who all can win at any
time.
They all play very well as faras the points race.
Sometimes, as far as the pointsrace, you know I'm at every
tournament so it's kind of hardfor kind of hard.
You know, for them guys thatjust kind of spot play to catch

(49:21):
me has been the issue.
I kind of wish they would, couldcould kind of change it maybe
to where they'd put a little bitmore emphasis on the wins and
not so much on the on the, youknow, just playing.
And I understand both sides.
If you're trying to, you'retrying to get the guys to keep
playing, get more points thatway way.
But for me I don't think I'vewon this year and I'm at the top
of the list and these guys areshooting new scores.

(49:43):
I don't feel that I'm worthy tobe up there.
But we have good points raisedall through the A flight, the B
flight, the C flight and the Dflight.
I don't know if you all noticed, but I got 20, some 20, some
odd d flight or playing thisweekend in our tournament at
beaver creek.
So it's that that flight's beengrowing tremendously on our

(50:04):
tour, so yeah and good well you,I'm glad you said d flight.

Speaker 1 (50:08):
I'm looking at that now.
You got clarence whittingtonand and you uh, desert desormo.
Both of them with a good roundwill be will be bumped up to c
flight.
Right and it's, you know, Ilook of them with a good round
will be bumped up to C-flight.
I look at that as a good thing.
You're getting better A-flightwith Ronnie he's always a good

(50:31):
player.
Tim Rusk is there always a goodplayer.
Keith's always a good player.
You've got some really bignames that are recognizable
across the country and it's youknow, at least from my
perspective, that's always goodfor a local tour to have those
names because it grows your tour.

Speaker 8 (50:51):
That's right, and a lot of them they travel to some
of the regionals and all thatkind of stuff to support and we
have a pretty good.
I think we had like 27 lastyear that went to the nationals.
So yeah, it'd be good supportfor that right he does a great
job with the tour down here.

Speaker 6 (51:06):
We um, the way he runs the tour, the way the
participation is and the peoplecome out, it's uh, it's.
I wish I could play more ofthem, my schedule and and, uh,
just the way it works out.
I don't get to play as many asI want to, but Trey does a
fantastic job with the pace ofthe play, the tour, the setups,

(51:27):
the courses he picks.
It's really nuts.

Speaker 1 (51:32):
Yeah, that's obvious, you know, with the member count
, I mean you guys have 181members, you know.
And Chris, don't go too far offthe rails with this one.
When we talked to Amal fromIndianapolis, he talks about
that being a small market.
But Louisiana with 181 members,I would consider that more of a

(51:55):
small market than Indianapolis, even though you can play longer
, I would say that I feel likeanybody over 125 members is not
a small market.

Speaker 2 (52:09):
That's just me, but I mean 181, that's awesome.
I'd give a couple of berriesaway for these children at 81.

Speaker 1 (52:23):
So, trey on your normal schedule, what would be
the tournament that you tellpeople that they cannot miss?
So if you've got people cominginto town, they want to play a
tournament, what would be theone that you say don't miss this
tournament, we have atournament.
What would be the one that yousay don't miss this tournament.

Speaker 8 (52:39):
We have a couple.
One of our courses in the areaat Central Louisiana is in
Marksville, tamaka, which has acasino attached.
To anybody wanting to travelinto that big it'd be a good
weekend to come in.
That's our finals of this year.
We also have one earlier in theyear, just a single day event
there as well.
And then I play a couplecountry clubs on the Mondays one

(53:00):
down at Lake Charles CountryClub which is just a phenomenal
golf course, and then also weplay University Club.
Coming up not this Monday butnext Monday is a good course.
I have a Sunday tournamentwhich is a one-day on Sunday and
then the next day is.
University Club is another oneday, but that way if people want
to make a couple days of it,they can.
But University Club is whereLSU is where the LSU practice or

(53:24):
the team practice and all thatstuff, and it's a wonderful
course as well.
I think Rod won the SeniorAmateur there, if I'm not
mistaken.
For Louisiana that was my firstone.

Speaker 1 (53:33):
Your first one.
How many Louisiana SeniorAmateurs have you won?
Two, oh, that's awesome.

Speaker 8 (53:39):
They cheated.
They brought them to Oak Wingtoo.

Speaker 1 (53:44):
Right, it still counts.
I don't care, it still counts, man, it absolutely counts.

Speaker 6 (53:47):
It's about them at Oak Wing.
They were a little poor to haveme.
That's what we should havescored on record.
There too, I was 13 under forthat tournament.

Speaker 1 (54:02):
Oh, my goodness gracious, everybody still got to
play the same course, justbecause it's your home course.

Speaker 6 (54:09):
Fortunately, in that tournament I beat my four-ball
partner, Robbie McWilliams, who's a wonderful player.
He's played nationally andinternationally, but I got him
at home, so usually he beats mybrains in where we work.
It was fun to skin him up onetime.

Speaker 1 (54:32):
Well, guys, thank you so much for joining us today.
I really do appreciate it.
And, Rod, congratulations onthe two rounds and the low score
in a two-day tournament that weever had.

Speaker 6 (54:44):
I mean that's amazing .
Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (54:45):
Appreciate you having me and Trey take care, and
we'll see you here in a couplemonths.

Speaker 8 (54:50):
Appreciate you all.
Thank you, bye guys.
Thank you Rod.

Speaker 1 (54:53):
Let's take a break from the show to hear about
Strixon's ZX Mark II drivers.

Speaker 9 (54:59):
ZX Mark II drivers are for major players, major
winners, major power All new ZXMark II drivers only from
Strixon Chris.

Speaker 1 (55:15):
how about that?
68, 63, longest putt in twodays was 35 feet.

Speaker 2 (55:22):
That's just wild, that's the round that you want
to just watch, and it's justeffortless at that point.

Speaker 1 (55:34):
I know it's insane, insane.

Speaker 2 (55:37):
You know I I mean you .
You feel bad playing withpeople like that and you're
having a bad round because youdon't want to slow them down or
make them, you know, get boredor whatnot, so you're like
trying to hurry up.
Yeah, it's, I've seen roundslike that and it's cool to watch
, but to be in that mindset,it's, it's.
It takes a lot of determination.

Speaker 1 (56:07):
Yeah, I can't even get there.
You know, from a mindperspective, you know.
But when you listen to Rod andyou listen to other good champ
flight players, they're just somatter of fact.
It's this shot, then the nextshot, then the next shot.
It doesn't work, it doesn'twork.
It doesn't work, no big deal, just okay, here we go.
Um, you know one bogey out of36 holes.
All right, here we go.

(56:28):
You know it's.
Can you imagine?
I mean, I just I can't.
And and he won by nine strokes.

Speaker 2 (56:37):
He even mentioned a two-putt birdie.

Speaker 1 (56:41):
Yeah, a two-putt, birdie.

Speaker 2 (56:43):
Nothing, just two-putt birdies.

Speaker 1 (56:45):
I got lots of two-putt triples.

Speaker 2 (56:51):
You know, at one point like okay, let's just get
it out of here.
You know I had a tournamentthis weekend after I came back.
First round, not too good.
Second round 79.
But I mean I'm hitting greens, two put in for par and getting
out of there.
Yeah, and I'm okay with thatbecause I know pars are not bad.

(57:13):
Right, I can't go 18 birdies ina round, but I can go five
birdies and let's say 12 parsand be okay right.

Speaker 1 (57:25):
You know that's, that's the.
That's the other thing thatthat I think you know the mid
high handicappers need to reallylook at is is their mindset and
what's par right?
Is par the actual par that's onthe scorecard, or is par five,
or is par four, or is par bogey, whatever it is, and play to

(57:48):
your par, as opposed to playingto what the scorecard par is,
and only think about that andnot where you are from the
scorecard.
Only think about that and notwhere you are from the scorecard
.
I think that that mindset shiftif you take that, you're going
to be much better off and you'regoing to find that you've got
much better scores becauseyou're not you know you're not

(58:10):
playing against a fictionalnumber right, right, right.

Speaker 2 (58:16):
And sometimes you got to learn to take your medicine.
Yeah, and if you get a couplebad shots or a couple bad lies,
take your medicine.
Get out of the woods in one, instead of trying to hack it out
there four times.
Play your layups and sometimesthe top shots is a good layup,

(58:40):
but you just got to take yourmedicine and play the next shot
the way it is.

Speaker 1 (58:44):
And just make sure you get the ball out of the hole
because, like Rod said, he'drather be in bed with a fever
than leave the ball short.

Speaker 2 (58:51):
Yes, exactly.

Speaker 1 (58:54):
That was funny, that was funny, that was funny.
So you know, let's get back andtalk about you a little bit.
You know 79, and you know youand I talked about your
first-round score and I give youa hard time about it, but it's
kind of funny.
But that's part of being a tourdirector, right?
I mean, sometimes you have todeal with stuff and it affects

(59:15):
your golf and it is what it is.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
Yeah, it is what it is and I don't think I've had
that issue in a very long time.
So, being able to now be what, three days since this happened,
and kind of like analyze it, Ithink the next time it won't be
as a disaster as it was onsaturday, um, but I mean, I mean

(59:44):
that whole flight played, played lights out that day and
yeah it.
You know, we're getting to thepoint of the season where
everybody's in their a game and, with the flights being so close
points-wise, everybody's, youknow, going out there shooting
the best they can.

Speaker 1 (01:00:06):
Yeah, and you know, one thing I really like about
you know your tour is you've gotyou've got players that are
posting stuff on social mediaand you know, it's.
I like it when they post theirscores and they post their

(01:00:27):
scorecard and they talk about it, like Jordan Morrow.
You know I bring him up becausehe's always posting stuff about
it, and whether I mean so.
Jordan shot 84-79.
Two really good B-flight scores.
He finished.
I think he finished fourth.
Fourth, and not that he washappy finishing fourth but

(01:00:49):
posting.
It was a great two days, lovedit, and so they're.
You know I love it.
Even if they're not winningthat, they're still posting and
enjoying their time on tour.
That to me, that says it all.

Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
Oh yeah, and you know Jordan played with me on the
first day.
He saw the train wreck of whathappened and you know being able
to laugh about it after theround and the next day he was
laughing about it.
It's always good to see theseguys and I mean you've been down
this road.
You know when you time eventsit's hard to keep everybody

(01:01:28):
around afterwards, especiallylike the champ guys, because
they don't want to wait twohours, right, three hours at
most.
But we had a lot of guys stayand wait and that was pretty
cool because you know they'rejust hanging out and you look at
tables and there's some champflight guys, some A-flight guys,
some C-flight guys just hangingout having a good time.

(01:01:50):
You know the wives out therejust hanging out.
You know the wives out therejust hanging out.
It was a nice time and I can'twait to see what we bring moving
forward because you know we gotthe Ryder Cup here in El Paso
this year and we need to bringall the big guns.

Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
Well, before we get to the Ryder Cup, let's talk
about your champ flight playerFirst off.
You know I already broughtRicky Bobby once, but I mean
Marshall Daniel.
He's got two first names.

Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:02:21):
You know, I'm not sure what.
He called him Daniel, he calledhim Marshall, whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
It's funny you say that because when I have to
announce his name every time, Ihave to like slow down and think
about it and find out wherethat comma is, because I think
the first time I called himDaniel Marshall, and then he
looked at me I went sorry, marshall, daniel.
So yes, man, this kid came outof nowhere.
He's a solid golfer.

(01:02:46):
He's a minus 4.5, and he's anew member.
But yeah, 66 at a UNMchampionship course, which is a
course that hosts a US Openqualifier every year.
Okay, I mean, this guy's astick.

(01:03:06):
He played.
I got to talk to him a littlebit.
He played golf at West Point.

Speaker 1 (01:03:12):
Oh, wow, okay.

Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
And he's in the military right now, stationed in
El Paso, so we may be seeinghim at Nationals.
I really talked to him and hisdad about it and we may be
seeing him if he can get thetime off.

Speaker 1 (01:03:25):
That'd be awesome.
66, 68.
You know, again, it'smind-boggling.

Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
And I mean mean the 68 was.
I'm going to say it probablycould have been lower, but I
think with a 9 stroke advantagehe won by 16.
I know with a 9 strokeadvantage he might have not had
to push the gas as much, justkind of put it on cruise control
and shot a 68.
But yeah, it was good to talkto him.

(01:04:00):
Everyone was impressed and justtrying to pick his brain was,
honestly, after the round, justhaving conversations with him,
which was pretty cool to see, like all flights down the line.
Yeah, just trying to get toknow the guy.

Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
So does he play for the Army in any of the Armed
Forces tournaments?

Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
I didn't ask.
Next time I see him I'll ask.
But I mean, he's a great guy,he just loves to play golf.
He basically was like you knowwhere there's a golf tournament
I'm going to play and I foundyours online through social
media and I mean it's been agreat time.

Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
Well, tell them, there's a golf tournament in
Hilton Head in October.
I did tell them that.

Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
I also told them there's a golf tournament in TPC
Scottsdale at the end of themonth.
See, come on, is he going toScottsdale.
Hopefully Depending again.
You know you know what, whatthe way the military is as long
as he can do his off.
He said he'd be out there.
But, um, I love to see him outthere Cause he he can do some,

(01:05:10):
some big things.

Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
Yeah, pull up the pull up the the, the uh roster
for that.

Speaker 2 (01:05:17):
I did.
I literally just looked at it.
I don't see him on there yet.

Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
Well, I was thinking more about what champ players
are out there, Because again, that would be a good one to win.
Oh wow, there's a name Ihaven't seen in a long time Fred
Blaylock.
I knew him from Upstate.
I haven't seen his name fortime.
Fred Blaylock, I knew him fromUpstate.
I haven't seen his name for awhile.

(01:05:43):
Let's see Randy Merrow fromVegas, Not recognizing most of
his names, but that's all right.

Speaker 2 (01:05:57):
There's a couple of them down there in the bottom
too Wallace Nelson from Arizona.
He's a solid golfer too ok he'scome to a couple of my events
and I mean he's just like wesaid.
He's just hit it down thefairway.
Second shot one putt birdie, two putt par.

(01:06:19):
Get out of there Next hole.

Speaker 1 (01:06:22):
That's all you got to do, man.
That's all you got to do.
You know, as I'm looking atthis, it kind of reminds me.
You know, we talk to people allthe time and I got a couple
messages.
You know who.
We haven't heard from much.
We haven't heard from Mick.
We haven't heard from much, wehaven't heard from Mick?

Speaker 2 (01:06:39):
We haven't.

Speaker 1 (01:06:41):
Haven't heard from Mick and the Columbus Boys.
I wonder what's going on.
I wonder if they're mad at us.

Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
He just keeps winning the flag and doesn't want to
talk about it Doesn't want totalk about it.

Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Yeah, Tell you what.
I'm going to reach out to him.
I think in our next episode, Ithink we've already got who?

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
we need to have won, but maybe we can get see if we
can get him on, find out what'sbeen going on this year and
what's going on up in Columbusyeah, we need an update because
I think that was a cool storylast year and I mean, if my
courses are on town sold flags,I probably have started that,
but not everybody sells flagsthere on my area.

(01:07:21):
We're not building courses.

Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Maybe what you could do as a maybe, as an end of
season.
How know how you do?
You know the, the, the tourchampionship or what have you?
Um, but the last, the lasttournament.
You know, give out flags forlast place in each, in each

(01:07:48):
flight, but as last tour of theyear, you're going to walk away
with something.
Thanks for coming out.
It'd be maybe something fun, Idon't know Um you know, with
with the golf, With the GolfWeek, El Paso flag right.

Speaker 2 (01:08:01):
Right, I have an idea that I want to do, but I need
to run it by so I can get themprinted.
I do want to do some Golf Weekflags.
I just don't know where to getthose from, but we'll figure it
out.

Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Yeah, we'll figure that out.
So I think I mentioned thisearlier in the episode, but
August is the last month forPlayer of the Month.
Then we'll have our eight andthen we'll pick the Player of
the Year.
You know Tracy Taylor, thePlayer of the Month for June.

(01:08:31):
We'll announce the Player ofthe Month July in the next
episode.
Again, a bunch of goodnominations for that.
Love sharing them.
So, tour directors, make sureyou get your nominations in for
August.
It's the last opportunity forthat.
And also, we got the raffle, got the club raffle.

Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
Whole set of irons.
They're literally sitting rightbehind me, still in a box,
chris.
I haven't opened them.
They don't have dirt on them.
They're brand new irons.
They're literally sitting rightbehind me, still in a box,
chris.
I haven't opened them.
They don't have dirt on them, they're brand new irons.
I promise you, when you getthem, whoever wins them will get
them.
I'm not going to promise themto be brand new, but as of now,
they're still brand new in thebox.

Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Yeah, man, it's 10 bucks to win a new set right
before Nationals too.
Yeah, give you about a month, month and a half, to get used to
them, try them out and takethem out to.

Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
Nationals.
Oh, you know, I meant to tellyou.
I don't know if we talked aboutthis in the last episode or not
, but when I went out to theBlacksburg Regional with the Fuj
Fuji car guys out there, let metell you what, man, the
technology in those shafts isphenomenal and those guys were

(01:09:49):
fitting guys with shafts inunder five swings.
Really, that's how good thattechnology is.
So we talk a lot about Strixonand the irons, but with these
Fuji car, those are really good.
But on a different note, theFuji car shafts phenomenal and

(01:10:10):
getting fit by really goodfitters.
That's the other thing.
We talked about this a lot lastyear about being fitted.
If you find a good fitter youshould always get fit.
But I mean, these shafts arephenomenal, phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
I want to check them out.
I'm in the market for a newdriver just snap it over your
leg it got close on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
I don't know what happened.

Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
No, the time that I've done that would have been
coming back from Hawaii.
On Saturday they got rid of it.
I don't know what happened.
No, the town that I've donethat with had been coming back
from Hawaii.
Ah, dang it.
They dropped my bag, my travelbag.

Speaker 1 (01:10:47):
My whole bag is gone, my whole bag.
You'll get caught doing that.
I don't know that for myexperience.

Speaker 2 (01:10:56):
You've met that.
She's smarter than that she is.

Speaker 1 (01:11:00):
Yes, she is, but I tell you, you know, I don't know
if I told this story before ornot, but you know, when I was
traveling a lot and playing alot, I actually had two full
sets, two, two full of the exactsame sets, one that I used to
travel with and one that I waswas normally playing with, and
that came because I wastraveling and the airline lost

(01:11:25):
my bag, or I thought they lostmy bag, and I I almost ended up
in jail.
I was Chris, I was hot.
I mean, you can imagine I washot.
Um and uh, the the the airportpoliceman came over on a segue

(01:11:59):
and I was.
There was one bag, one bag goingaround on a different carousel.
Right, it was my clubs.
And so that made me even moremad.
I said you know what?
Because that's not even ourflight.
So somebody could you know what?
Oh, wow, here's a bag of clubs.
And Jen dragged me out.

(01:12:22):
I was hot, and that's the nextday I purchased a complete,
complete set.
The only thing that was thatwas different was a putter,
because that.
I don't know if you ever seen myputter.
My putter is is custom made andI couldn't get that done.
But yeah everything else.

Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
Wow, what was the airline going to do?

Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
Like $150 voucher.
Oh shit, exactly, and I'm hot.

Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
You know we'll find it.

Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
Here's $150 voucher.
We'll find it.
Here's a $150 voucher.
We'll find it.
What?

Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
you should have still taken the voucher and then walk
out with your clothes.
I think I was thinking theywere also going to give me a
restraining order well, I meannowadays, like I have an air tag
in my golf bag and an air tagin the suitcase that the golf
bag goes in, in case somebodytakes the golf bag out.

(01:13:24):
Okay, and that was withSouthwest.
They scan every bag that goesin, so on the app you can see if
it's been scanned on the planeor not.
Oh, really app.

(01:13:45):
Oh really, and I'm.
I am sitting in the planemonitoring both the air tags and
the app till I see where isthis scanned on plane or loaded
on plane, and then, all right, now I can relax well, I I don't
know what my issue is.

Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
I can't figure out the air tag I mean you and I
talked about.

Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
I can't figure it out no, it it's not for everybody,
I guess.

Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
I guess not.
I guess you gotta be.
You know, I don't know, I don'tknow.
Well, get your money in for theraffle.
Venmo me at TimNATC.
Let's get these clubs raffledoff and so you can bring them
out to the National Championship.

Speaker 2 (01:14:16):
Yes, sir.

Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
Anything going on next couple weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:14:21):
No, just trucking through trying to.
You know there's a bunch ofcity championships that are
happening, so I kind of try toavoid that weekend because a lot
of guys like to play otherthings.
You know I hate to have a lowturnout to one of our ending
events, so you know, nothingcrazy just trying to finalize

(01:14:41):
everything else.
You know get Ryder Cup ready, kids back in school, get life
back together again.

Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
Good luck with that.

Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
Yeah, good telling me .

Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
All right, bud.
Well, it's good seeing youagain and we'll we'll catch up
again here real soon.
Everybody, take care, be safeand likewise start registering
for Tornes.

Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
Man only got a few out if you're waiting now,
you're gonna blink and it'sgonna be in the season, it's
gonna be over.
So just register and registerthe for the events and then wait

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose.
