On this episode of Golfweek Amateur Tour – The Podcast, hosts Tim Newman and Chris Rocha deliver a mix of heart, humor, and high-level Amateur Golf Competition.

We kick things off with Mike Cobb, April’s Member of the Month from the Charleston tour. Alongside Tour Director Tim Sumption, Mike shares how he’s brought over 20 new players to the tour, built friendships in every flight, and kept the spirit light with his now-famous rubber snake prank. You’ll hear what makes the Charleston scene so strong and why Mike sticks around to cheer on golfers from every flight.

Then we meet Brandon Filantres, the 17-year-old phenom who recently claimed the D-Flight title at the PGA West Regional. Brandon opens up about maintaining a big lead, bouncing back from pressure, and how his journey in Amateur Golf Tournaments is just getting started.

Also in this episode:

  • Must-play course shoutouts: Parris Island, Wyboo Golf Club, Orangeburg CC

Speaker 3 (00:43):
I don't want to get into it now but maybe we'll talk
about later in the episode.
But but you know, there's now'sprobably time when we need to
lighten the mood up a little bit.
A lot of serious things goingon on tour and sometimes
laughing and having a good timeis going to help get us through
some of these things.
But as we get through, chris,it's June.

Thursday Thursday to get yourmay players a month in.
So please make sure you do that.
I'd like to see um as many ormore nominations for May as we

(01:26):
did for April.
That was really nice to see.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Yeah, it was, and I mean it can't be just one person
in your tour that's reallyshown the light of being a Golf
Weekend member so definitely somany years.
I mean it's tough competitionout there.
It really is.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Well, let's get into doing this thing, man, let's go.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
we got a great episode this week.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Better than the last episode.
Of course it is.
I mean, I'm surprised youdidn't know that we get better
every time.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Now I don't know if we're going to have time to talk
about this, but there were someclub throwing instances at the
PGA Championship.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
I don't know if we have time to talk about it.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
I understand it.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
I've done it.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Don't ever say that on live air man I have.
I'm not ashamed to admit it,I've done it, don't ever say
that on live air man I have.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
I'm not ashamed to admit it, I'm the sensei of the
tomahawk throw.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
See, I'm a saint.
I would never do anything todisrespect anybody, at any time.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Oh, I'm not disrespecting anybody, I'm
disrespecting myself.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
But I don't know if you saw the hole in that one
sign from Wyndham Clark's club.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
I did not see the hole.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
no, oh man, it's bad.
I mean it's bad.
I kind of chuckle a little bit,but you know it is what it is.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
They had a tough time apparently.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, actually, the article I was reading, you know,
talks about it with the amountof money that's now going into
it.
You know the stakes are alittle bit higher and I think
that's kind of pushing.
I get it, you know Right.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
I could see that.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
So we should start upping the skins entries Cool.
Like a hundred bucks and seewhat happens.
See how it plays out.
Yeah, yeah.
I wouldn't suggest that anyway.
Well, let's go ahead and getthis thing really started.
You know we pushed the Aprilmember of the month winner off

(04:21):
because it was MilitaryAppreciation Month and I'm glad
we got to talk to the militarymembers.
But let's go ahead and bring inour April member of the month
and the tour director.
April member of the month isMike Cobb and tour director Is

(04:42):
Tim Sumption from Charleston.
Welcome guys.
Is Mike Cobb and tour directoris Tim Sumption from Charleston.
Welcome guys.
Hey, thank you, sir.
Thank you, mike.
First off, congratulations forbeing the Tour's Member of the
Month and thank you for spendingsome time with us tonight.
You're welcome.
Thank you for having me, tim, thank you for nominating Mike

(05:02):
and basically, before we reallyget started, let me just read
the nomination that yousubmitted.
And just so everybody knows youknow we've talked about this
the other times, but just toreiterate you know we send these
off to Dennis and Dennischooses.
It's not Chris and I thatchoose, it's Dennis and Chris,
and I did talk about them andthere were some really good

(05:24):
nominations this time, but Mike, yours really did stood out,
really did stand out.
Yeah, that too.
So I'm going to go ahead andtry and read this.
I am a product of publiceducation, so we'll see what
happens, but, tim, this is whatyou wrote.
Charleston is proud to nominateMike Cobb for this

(05:46):
distinguished honor.
Mike has been a major reason inthe growth of the Charleston
Tour.
I can honestly tell you he hasrecruited over 20 players to the
Tour.
He has been a major localplayer in the Charleston area
for decades, competing in allthe big golf events here.
He has used his uniquepersuasive skills and influence
to help grow the Charleston Tour.
Not only does Mike play hereand recruit, he has traveled to

(06:08):
numerous other tours andcompeted, including Hilton Head,
charlotte, columbia and a fewothers over the years.
His play in the regionals, onboth the regular and senior tour
, is exemplary.
He just loves to compete and isperplexed by those who don't.
Mike, so am I.
Mike Early.
One would often hang around towatch and see how the other

(06:28):
players were playing, congratulate them or chide them.
If their play was not sospectacular.
I knew I liked you.
I chide Chris all the time.
He interacts with all theplayers.
He would often help us pack upand load out in the early parts.
I decided it would be a goodidea to make him an assistant.
To this day, his recruitment ofplayers, especially in the
championship flight, is evident.

(06:50):
He will stay on these guys andhelp grow the hardest division
to grow.
Thanks, tim.
Tim, that's a great nomination.
Those are the types of thingsthat we're looking for.
So thanks for doing that.
You wrote that, but what elsedo you have to say on top of
that nomination?

Speaker 2 (07:05):
You doing that, you wrote that, but what else do you
have to say on top of thatnomination?
Well, you know, everything inthere I said is basically true.
I mean, he, um, he reallyembraced the tour when he, when
he first came out and, um, eversince he got there, you know my
membership has grown, but thechamp flight's also grown.
And you know, because, obviously because of the
tournaments he played and thefriendships that he made, you
know, playing against these guysand all these big tournaments

(07:27):
and everything.
But lately I think I found outthe real reason was he just
wants more money in the pot.
That's why he gets up all day.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Nothing wrong with that, and he'll stay on them,
I've got to carefully choose whoI get to play.
To do that?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
If they're not signed up, they're going to get a
couple texts and maybe an emailfrom Mike hey.
Wedgefield is calling your name.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
There's TA, right there TA.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Hey, whatever you got to do to build the pot, build
the pot.
Exactly.
That's why Chris went to theA-flight.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Yeah, yeah, that's the reason why yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
I tried that once.
It didn't work out Going to theA-flight Dennis didn't allow it
.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well, I can see why looking at your scores Right.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
But my scores that year A few days ago.
At Lake.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Marion.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
But my scores that year had led me to the A-flight,
I mean it was, they were highenough, let's just put it that
way.
My handicap had dropped to likea five or 4.5 or something and
I said Tim put me in the A-flat,I'm tired of donating money.
And he sent it to Dennis andDennis said, no way, he shot 62

(08:52):
at Mylar last week, I heard.
I heard it in Myrtle Beach andI was like I've been playing
there since I was 8 years old,so that shouldn't count.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
Yeah, there, son the dentist.
Even if you got thedocumentation, he'll just say,
no, it's not happening.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
Yeah, he did.
He nipped it right in the bud.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Well, but it seems to have worked out for you.
I mean, Chris, he's a minus .7.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
You know I'm looking at it.
I'm highly impressed 34 birdiesthis year, four eagles this
year.
I've had four straight roundswith an eagle right now.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
Competitive rounds, yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Damn.
He's had a whole atrium so far.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Good God, good God.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Go ahead, chris, good god so go ahead, chris oh no, I
was just going to say.
With the nomination he mentionshow you stay and watch all the
other flights and being a champflighter, I can imagine those
can be long days, but what makesyou decide to stay and see how
the other flights finish out?

Speaker 4 (10:07):
well, I mean, um, tim , first of all, tim's such a
good director and he's so goodto me in the way he treats me
and, um, anything I can do tohelp him out is my top priority.
A guy always got to get okaywith my wife because I'm I'm
being gone all all day.
You know I leave.
I leave at nine to go to wild.
I get home.
I get home at nine, you know, but um, I have.

(10:30):
I mean, I have friends in the Dflight, I have friends in the C
flight, I have friends in allthe flights.
So I really want to see how howthey all play.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
you know, nice and um and see, I thought you were
going to say cause you needed topick up your super skin money.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
No, he just sent me that Venmo.
He keeps a tab on it, or Venmo?
Sometimes he's even like we'resplitting right.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Sometimes he probably takes a little bit of a cut, a
little off the top.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I'd learn the podcast with.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
Tim and Chris.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
The handling fee.
All right.
He never answers the phone whenI call.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
See what's up with that man, Mike, that's kind of
like you know, when we're at aregional or nationals, I know.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
I know.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
I tell Dennis.
I said you know, I'm all right,I'm live.
And as soon as I say that, hepicks up the microphone and
starts talking on theloudspeaker right after I said
dennis, don't do anything, I'mlive right now, and he just
starts talking like come on,dude he's working.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
He's working, remember, I'm working I'm
working.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
That's funny, that's funny, funny, funny sorry that I
had to take that phone call.
It was Steve Kubik.
It was Steve Kubik, yeah, and Ihad to feel bad because he
didn't have access to his phonetoday.
You know, I didn't have accessto his phone.
He was playing Augusta, he wasplaying Augusta National.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Oh sorry, oh man, so he was calling to tell you.
Oh, Tim, by the way, I didn'thave access to my phone today
because I was playing AugustaNational, Just wanted to let you
know.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
No, no, we're actually running a senior
tournament at Parris Island onFriday, so we're going to talk
about that.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
Well, you know, I'm glad you brought that up.
We had Steve on a few weeks agoand he raves about Parris
Island and you know that's acourse in tournament that people
, if they're in the area, reallyshouldn't miss, is that?

Speaker 2 (12:28):
the case, is he telling truth?
It's.
It's the best military golfcourse on on the east coast, wow
there's a couple on the westcoast, I'll give it a run, but
you can play the ball down withno problem.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
I mean it's, I played it last year for the first time
and I won't miss it again.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Okay, Well, Mike, what's your favorite course that
we play on tour?

Speaker 4 (12:51):
That we play.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
That.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
I've played is Salisbury.
I like Salisbury, northCarolina, because I'm from there
, okay, but I really likedOldfield, oh yeah, okay, I won
that a few weeks ago.
Um, next it's a session that Iplayed.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
That's, it's pretty nice okay so salisbury, north
county, so I'm drinking thechair wine there you chair wine
home of it food line chair wine.
Love it, love it.
I.
I started drinking that when Iwas stationed in fort bragg, and
this was a long, long time ago,but close to 30 years I've been
drinking this stuff and now Ilost my whole train of thought,

(13:31):
so I was bringing it to you.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
I saw you leaving.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
It doesn't take much.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
It's just lost in there somewhere when you realize
something was 30 years ago.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
You guys understand, chris just turned 30.
40.
So now, it's young pups.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
Young and young.
Yeah, I can say that now.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
All right.
So, tim, give us your beststory.
Golf-related story about Mike.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Oh, there's a few, I mean golf-related.
You know, I've had the pleasureto play with Mike quite a few
rounds.
So to see some really, reallygood golf and not understand how
someone can only swing at 70%and still hit the ball you know,
75 yards past me off the tee isit's unbelievable.

(14:31):
But one of the things you haveto beware if you're playing with
Mike.
He's nothing but a big kid.
He's nothing but a big kid.
He's nothing but a big kid.
And you just have to beprepared because you might go to

(14:52):
step into your golf cart andthere might be this little snake
pulling out from underneath thegolf cart looking right at you
okay, he's not pulling out, he'sjust laying there filming you
he's.
he's gotten numerous players ontour with that one.
They all know it's coming Goodto know.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
They're all on video.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
You know it's coming.
You just don't know when it'scoming.
But it's not PG Good.

Speaker 7 (15:18):
God.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
We will have to show you some of those videos, I mean
when they're having a bad day.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
you got to make them smile somehow.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
You do.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
It keeps them coming back.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
That's awesome.
And Mike, give us something onTim, Because Tim plays things
close to the vest.
At least around us at Nationalshe plays things real close to
the vest.
I need some dirt to startspreading on him Some dirt.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
My wife just walked in.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
Well, I'd say one of our funniest moments playing
together is he had me takewhat's your boy's name, tim?
I'm the member guest.
Oh, bill, he's your normal'sname, tim, remember, guess?
Oh, bill, he's your normalpartner, bill.
Yeah, he had me take Bill'splace and I joined him.

(16:15):
Obviously, tim gets some shots,I don't get any shots, and we
get about 13 holes in and Timmakes his first par with a shot
on his shot hole.
He bogeyed every shot holeuntil that point, so I just kind
of walked up His member guest.
Now I just kind of walked up,introduced myself and welcomed
him to the 2024 member guest.

(16:36):
Eh, it's just.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Tim come on bud.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
He found that humorous.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
I guess so what else?

Speaker 2 (16:49):
my home course is a tough course.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
It's a tough course what is your home course?

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Crowfield, here in Goose Creek it's tough, a lot of
people don't like it.
They don't like to play it.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
It's tough around the greens.
Every green drops off they got,you know, a couple tears on
each green.
Okay, it is tough.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
Well, Tim, you got to find an easier course.
That way people don't give youshit.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
I did, I didn't try to get you shit.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
I did live an easier course.
You're trying to come out ofthe mine because it's a little
easier.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, you shoot 62 out there.
It must be easy.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Oh wow, you asked for it, tim, I did.
I like it, though I like theback and forth.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
He shoots 82 on us.
It can't be too easy, phew.
We love to hate each other.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
How does the mute button work?

Speaker 3 (18:02):
How's the what?

Speaker 2 (18:03):
How's the mute button work?

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Oh, I'm the only one with that.
Oh okay, smart move.
Yeah see, oh good god.
So, mike, what's your lowestround on tour?
I think I saw a 67 recently at.

Speaker 4 (18:24):
Santee that's funny yeah, that was a senior tour
this past week.
I have shot.
I shot 68 at Crowfield, ofcourse he was talking about it
was so difficult.
I did shoot 68 a couple yearsago in the finale.
I've shot 68 at Rivertown.
That might have been last yearor a year before, also that's

(18:51):
probably it 67, 68.
I mean, but it's typically,it'll stay below, you know, 74,
75.
I like to try to keep it belowthat.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Yeah me too, you know , for nine.
Yeah, temperature too yeah Fornine.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Yeah, temperature in my house.
So Tim mentioned you know thatyou can fly the ball 75 yards
past him with a 70% swing, andthat's you know, chris, when we
talk to the good champ playersright, we've talked to champ
players, so there's champplayers and there's the good
champ players, and that seems tobe the theme with all of them,

(19:34):
where people like you and mewe're gripping the club so tight
and swinging so hard and theball doesn't go anywhere.
So, mike, what's the secretthere?
The ball doesn't go anywhere.

Speaker 5 (19:44):
So Mike, what's the?

Speaker 4 (19:45):
secret there.
I'd have to visually, I guesssee it, but I don't know.
I mean a shortened swing to meguarantees you're going to hit
it in the center of the face Notguarantees it, but it's going
to help you hit it in the centerof the face.
I'm real handsy.
I got a good lag and I thinkit's all right there at the

(20:11):
bottom of the swing for me.
Like Tim said, I get donehitting and everybody's like you
look like you're not evenswinging at it and I think it's
just all right there in thewrist.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
Good God, see it, chris, you better follow.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Watch him play.
I'm going to have to.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
Chris moved from the B flight to the A flight this
year and have you been in the80s?

Speaker 1 (20:35):
yet we're not going to talk about that.
We're here to talk about MikeDude.
I'm trying to help you.
We're here to celebrate him, sir, not talk about my struggles
and we all go through it.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
I see a 67 on there, I think that's his lowest on a
regular tour yeah, that's why Iwas looking at that and that was
last year at Santee.
But even still 67.
You know I'll take a 67 anytime.
Like I said on the front nineanyway, but to have a minus .7,

(21:15):
and this is what's funny, Chrishis senior handicap is .7.
His golf week is minus .7.
I don't know how he does that.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
Because the courses get easier as I move back,
because I can't work my headthrough the fairway.
It kind of opens it up a littlebit.
So you've got to start workingon it.
I've got to think more from thesenior tees.
Oh, that's a problem.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
There's not a lot up here.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
No, I understand, you can figure that out just by
looking at him Tim.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
Plus, I mean a lot of times I do have to tough it out
and play with Tim in the senior.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
So that's a couple shots there.

Speaker 4 (21:51):
And it's hard.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
That's true, that's true.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
Oh, my goodness gracious, See, I'm going to lose
my fucking.
This is God.
So my guess is you like playingthe golf week side better
because of the distance?

Speaker 4 (22:08):
so well, I, I enjoy both of, but we have better
turnouts and I'm getting morepeople to turn out for the, like
he said, for the um, um, theregular tour, I think this year,
for the first time, I thinkalmost every tournament, we've
had almost double digits for thechamp flight.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
That's awesome.

Speaker 4 (22:30):
That's a lot for us.

Speaker 5 (22:33):
And even for the other flights that I get people
in.

Speaker 4 (22:37):
Even the other flights I try to get people in.
When I first start talking tothem about it, they're like I
ain't ready for all that.
I haven't played no tournaments.
I'm like there's a guy thatshoots 110 out there just like,
yeah, you know, I mean, it'sjust fun getting to play
different courses.
I say you're not gonna getbetter playing berkeley country
club every day, right the samecourse.

(22:57):
It's wide open.
You know you need to go playthese different courses and I
think once one of them does it,you know like say my nephew,
then my nephew gets three people, you know, and it just spirals
yeah, that's the key.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
Once they come out, once they're hooked, you just
got to get them out one time andexactly and they're hooked.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
I just got him to join this year.
Next thing, mike's playing.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
It don't matter if they're champ flatters or a
flatters or b flatters.
He, he's texting them to get in.
I'm like man.
I appreciate that man, he'slike man.
We gotta bump up that SuperSkimmoney.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
You do Seriously, you know he does a good job of
staying on them, getting them tocome out.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
All seriousness aside , he does.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
Well, you know, looking at both schedules here,
on both schedules, what's leftof the courses that are, don't
misses that.
If somebody's passing throughor needs to make up a tournament
across the country, whichtournaments are, don't miss.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Well, on a regular tour.
You got Charleston National, wegot Parris Island Definitely
don't miss.
We got a real gem that not toomany people know about Waibu
Golf Club, and Mike can attestto this.
Okay, it's always in greatshape.
It doesn't get a lot of play.

(24:28):
It's like you're at a countryclub playing that course.
Greens are always great.
It's a hidden gem.
It's up in Manning, SouthCarolina, and that's definitely
a not miss.

Speaker 7 (24:42):
We get to go off early.
It's hotter that time of yearDefinitely a not miss.
I guess the biggest not miss ofthe year is.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
Crowfield To end the year.

Speaker 4 (24:53):
Okay, yeah, because my wife cooks for everyone and
that's a big miss, because youdon't want to miss that because
his wife cooks.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
Can I come up even if I don't play?

Speaker 4 (25:02):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
I'll invite you.
Sweet Chris, come in early.
But, tim, let me ask you aboutWaibu, because I've heard of
that place.
Why does it not get a lot ofplay?

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Because of its location it's in Manning, South
carolina and their population isprobably not very, very big.
So, um, it's uh and it's, it'sa little drive to get there.
I mean, you're driving around, there's two, actually two,
courses right there, but the ybuone is is the state-of-the-art

(25:36):
one.
As a matter of fact, we evenhad uh, I think it was like two
years ago, we had Sterling Sharpcome out and play.

Speaker 5 (25:43):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (25:46):
How about that?
That's pretty awesome.
Yeah, how about on?

Speaker 2 (25:52):
the senior side.
I'm in here, senior side well, obviously Parris Island, but we
also got Orangeburg country clubon the schedule, and again, why
boo?
And then I think we finish upthe year at legend oaks, like we
did last year okay those are.
Those are really good courses.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
Yeah, I tell people don't miss orangeburg.
Now, I've never been out there, never played, but I've heard
nothing but good stuff.
And since you've been on it,what's it?
Five or six years, maybe alittle bit longer every player
that I've had that's gone theresaid it's a don't miss.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
Orangeburg yeah.

Speaker 4 (26:32):
And that's probably one of my favorites.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
I mean the course is always in great shape, but the
greens there are just phenomenal.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
But I mean, the course is always in great shape,
but the greens are justphenomenal, but they're.
I mean you play the foot outthe left, it breaks two feet
left.
Wow, they're hard to read.
They're hard to read.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Chris, you should go.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
But it's fun, it's fair.
It's fair off the tee.
I mean, it's not like.
That's not what makes it whatit is.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Okay, well, that's awesome, guys.
Thank you so much for takingsome time with us tonight.
I really do appreciate it.
Mike, congratulations, and Idon't know what region you're
going to the rest of the year, but I hope to see you at some of
them.
I know I'll be at FRIP.

(27:20):
I think I'm going down to theones in Florida coming up, I
don't know what else.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
I'm not sure if I'm going to FRIP or not, but I
might try to make something inFlorida.

Speaker 1 (27:32):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (27:35):
Yeah, I definitely need to get to the Cabot Farms
for good things about that, andmy brother lives just outside of
PGA Village, so I think I'mgoing to do a two-for-one there,
see my brother and go to thetournament.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
So anyway, you do have True Blue Caledonia.
On the senior side, on thesenior side.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
Oh, when is that July ?
28th oh when is that July 28th?
Oh, somewhere around there.
So I do need to get to moresenior regionals, but I'm
probably going to be at theVirginia Tech regional on the
golf week side the 18th and 19th.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
I'll be in Hawaii, so I won't be able to go to any of
those.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
I'm going to be in Hawaii.
I can't go.
Why are you complaining aboutgoing to Pauly's and playing
golf?

Speaker 1 (28:29):
To where.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
Pauly's.
It's just outside of MyrtleBeach.
Man, go back to sleep Justbecause you're going to Hawaii.
Well guys, well guys.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
This see you guys this is what I'm working with
all the time.
Yeah, I feel you.
I know it's sitting right therein the bottom right of the
screen.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
Well, guys, again, thank you so much for your time.
I appreciate it.
Thanks All right.
Thank you.
Guys are awesome, yep, thankyou.
Thanks for having me.
Let's take a break from theshow to hear about Strixon's ZX
Mark II irons.

Speaker 6 (29:04):
A great iron set needs more than good looks.
It's got to be fast and got tobe pure, but good looks never
hurt either.
The all-new ZX Mark II ironsfrom Strixon.

Speaker 3 (29:19):
We're not doing this 15 times.
Oh, chris, you know, I knowit's a little delayed to have
the April member of the month onin June.
But you know, with us doing theMilitary Appreciation Month,
mike again was gracious enoughto be pushed back only by a

(29:40):
couple days, but I enjoyed theconversation with he and Tim.
I'm quite sure that if weweren't being broadcast we would
have gotten some much moredeeper stories.
Let's just put it that way.

Speaker 1 (30:01):
Oh, we have that conversation all the time.
We have guests.
I mean, that's the thing aboutgolf is you have some PG stories
and then you have some rated Rplus stories.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
And they look like they were much more rated R.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Oh yeah, Much more rated R I mean yeah, much more
rated R.
I mean, just like the Jamesbrothers?
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
But once you get to hear thosestories off air, they're pretty
funny, exactly.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
You know it's again when you talk to somebody like
Mike, you know just down toearth, you know easygoing guy
that's shooting in the high 60s,low 70s every round, very
consistent.
But you know, one of the thingsthat really impressed me about

(30:50):
him was, you know, as a champplay player, you know sticking
around the whole tournament, youknow encouraging everybody and
being there and, uh, you know, until the last group comes in,
and that that really shows a lot, you know, to the, to the rest
of the tour and and what'sreally important about what
we're doing.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
Yeah, I mean, cause there there could be stereotypes
, you know the chat fight guysdon't care, or the deep fight
guys are terrible, and the factthat he's able to stay there and
cheer on people that he knowsmeans that he's gaining
everybody on tour Exactly, andas directors, it's easy for us
because we have to be there, right, but to have these guys
stay, you know, as long as theycan is pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (31:30):
Absolutely, absolutely, you know.
So we're going to go.
We had a couple of regionalsthis past weekend.
Got a couple more coming up,but um you know, from my
perspective, go ahead.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
No, I was just going to say I.
I think that you know theregionals are going pretty well
right now.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:48):
Um and uh, there was a fight, a feisty one, out there
in in California.
I was watching the leaderboardsthis past weekend and it was it
was pretty interesting for allthe flights.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
honestly, I was watching the leaderboards this
past weekend and it was prettyinteresting for all the flights
honestly.
Well, you know you got DanHubbard who won the A-flight out
of Louisiana North.
You know he and Trey do theirpodcast out of the men's
bathroom.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
Yeah, the bathroom's out there, but we won't talk
about that.
I mean if you look at it champflight playoff.
A flight playoff.
B flight almost gave it away, yeah.
C flight almost gave it away.
And then D flight almost aplayoff.

(32:32):
Yeah, but it was pretty cool tosee you out there.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
Yeah, and playing on those courses out there.
I don't know, have you everbeen out there?

Speaker 1 (32:44):
I have not.
I need to make a chance to goout there, yeah you do so.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
It's been years since I've been out there, when I say
years like 08, 09.
It's been a while, but I'vebeen out there.
Number one it's beautiful.
Number two the courses arephenomenal, and to be able to
play on those courses in atournament like this, it's

(33:15):
pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
Yeah, it is a big deal.
I mean, you know that might aswell cut to the chase, but our
next guest on this episode isone of the five winners out
there.
You know, one thing that I waslooking at was because Arizona
was out there.
My guys were out there and fourout of the five flights Arizona
took.

(33:37):
I mean pretty lucky when you'repretty close, but that's just
rivalry talk right there.
But um, I did notice, you know, the d flight player.
Uh, who's our next guest?
Might be one of the youngestregional winners or oldest
regional winners.
We'll get that.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
To get to that yeah, we'll get to the bottom of that
here.
Yeah, before and later, that'sfor sure.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
But you know a good rivalry friend of mine, his son
took D-Flight, so let's welcomein Brandon Filantris.

Speaker 7 (34:10):
Brandon, how you doing?
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
I'm doing good how are you guys Doing awesome?
It's good to see you.
I would advise you, though, tonot sit out in the middle of the
road you know, yeah, I just Ijust had to show off a nice
picture.

Speaker 7 (34:25):
I got um from down there in california nighttime,
so it's beautiful out there,isn't?
It.
It's very beautiful.
We stayed off of uh one of theprivate courses over in la
quinta and it was beautifulviews all day.
What did you think of thecourses the courses I was first
time playing for both of thembut, it was great.

(34:46):
I mean, there were greatconditions, the fairways were
running and the greens, like you, had to hit it a mile in the
air to get it to stick, wow.
So it was some very toughconditions.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
Well, I mean, you seem to do okay, I mean you won.

Speaker 7 (35:04):
So yeah, oh, it was, it was the.
It was a close one, I mean itwas.
I think it was one, one shot.
I had him by yeah, well, let'sstart.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Let's start with the first round, though, because you
I mean you, I think you youwere leading by nine strokes
after day one, I think it waseight after day one Eight after
day one, so you know you shot apretty good score.
Tell us about that round.

Speaker 7 (35:29):
That round it was pretty good.
I kept my misses minimal andwhen I was missing them they
were staying pretty straight.
It was just chunks or stuffthat's manageable, not really
any hooks and my putts.
My putting wasn't that great.
I had a quite a few burn theedge, but other than that my my
game was just just mistakes thatwere easy to fix.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
So as the round went on.

Speaker 7 (35:53):
I just was doing what was necessary to to keep the
low.

Speaker 3 (35:58):
Yeah, with an 87, you know, especially again on those
courses, an 87, that's a reallygood score and I guess that's
the score that got you bumped tothe sea flight.
Huh.

Speaker 7 (36:08):
It was indeed the score that got me bumped to sea
flight.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
yes, you look happy about that happy and nervous.

Speaker 7 (36:15):
Yeah, well, I'm going out here, the Chicago tour is
having their first major and I'mflying out and to see family,
so I'm catching that tournament.
So that's.
It's definitely gonna be adifferent environment to play my
first c tournament in, but I'mexcited for it where are they?

Speaker 3 (36:32):
where are they?

Speaker 7 (36:32):
playing that at um.
I'm not sure.
I'm not sure the exact location.
I know it's um, can't rememberoff the top of my head, but I
know I'm going out there with myuncle, so Well, I'll get our
I'll get our crack researchstaff to find, find that yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:52):
He's, he's doing that right now.
All right, so you're good,chris.
No, I was just gonna say so.
Then you, you get to the hardercourse, I would assume.
Um, barely break triple digits, which is, you know, you almost
match the temperature out there,um, but we're able to hold off
rosemary and and rosemary's,she's a solid player.
Like she, she'll creep up onyou and get you.

(37:13):
So were you?
Were you watching theleaderboard close to the end, or
did you just feel that she wascoming close?

Speaker 7 (37:21):
So what happened was I knew, obviously going in, that
all three of the people I waspartnering with I had an
eight-shot lead on, and sousually in tournaments I don't
really check the leaderboarduntil the very end because I get
in my own head if I'm checkingthe leaderboard.
So at the turn I wasn just Iwasn't counting anything up.
Rosemary I was riding withRosemary that day and so I was

(37:46):
hearing her and one of the otherguys we were playing with count
up the scores, make sureeverything was right, and just
in the back of my head I knewhow many strokes I had.
So it kind of started asnowball of me getting worse and
worse as the day went on,because I just I knew, like
after every hole what the gapwas shortening to right and I

(38:08):
think at the end there, goinginto 18, rosemary had a one-shot
lead on me so he had actuallyclosed the gap and and gained a
stroke.
And um, I just, I just tried tostay as calm as possible because
I think I, I I doubled 16 andthen tripled 17 to really to

(38:28):
close it, close the close thatgap a lot.
But um, yeah, I just I was justfortunate that, uh, rosemary
made mistakes in her own gameand I just kept mine limited as
much as I could on that lasthole.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
Well, again, you know if you put yourself in that
position, but knowing what youhad to do to close out on 18,
what she did is what she did,but for you to be able to do
what you need to do to close itout on 18, what what she did,
what she did, but for you to beable to to do what you need to
do to close it out on 18, thatthat is also something that is

(39:07):
is really good for you, becauseyou know now you know that you
can do it even if you're nothaving a good round.
You know if you've got one holeand this is what you have to do
to win, you know now that youcan do it have to do to win.

Speaker 7 (39:22):
You know now that you can do it.
Yeah, my my only goal goinginto that last one, because I
knew rosemary actually saidafter she didn't check the
leaderboard at all so she had noclue that she had me by one
going into that last hole.
But um, I knew I was down one,so my only goal was just to keep
the ball in play.
There was water on the left, soI just wanted to keep it in
play and let her make her ownmistakes.
Yeah, and luckily for me,that's what happened and that's

(39:44):
what helped me secure the winyeah, I mean that that's good
match play right there.

Speaker 1 (39:48):
That's absolutely getting you for, uh, you know,
match play events, rider cupevents, um, you know done when
you throw a jab at your dad, butuh, don't take it, rather cup.
Uh advice from him.

Speaker 7 (40:03):
I mean, I don't know that we'd take any advice from
you either, cause I'm prettysure the belts in our hands
grows man, man, that's you guysI'm saying now that

Speaker 1 (40:16):
they are good God he had that one in his pocket ready
to go.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
Well, brandon, I'm looking at your scores and you
had a pretty good couple monthsthat you've been playing.
So you shot an 83 at FalconDunes on May 4th.
Is that your?
That's obviously the best roundyou've had on tour, but is that
your best round ever?

Speaker 7 (40:44):
I don't think it's my best round ever, but definitely
on tour.
Definitely on tour.
That's my best round, but Ibelieve I've shot lower outside
the tour, okay.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
And then you shot in 84 in March at Saddlebrook Again
really good scores.
And then you know to shoot an87 in a regional.
You know, first day of aregional, again those scores.

Speaker 7 (41:09):
that's a pretty solid effort been putting a lot more
time into my golf game that Ihad in the past, especially this
past year.
I think my last year's was thebest result.
I think I tied first in Aguilain one of our tournaments out
here, and then I tied third inthe DPC Scottsdale regional last

(41:33):
year.
So that was my two big events, but I didn't end up securing any
wins.
So I spent a lot more time.
I've been practicing a lot more.
I think this past week I playeda round of golf, including the
tournaments.
Six out of the seven days lastweek Wow yeah, I've been working

(41:54):
on my game a lot and justtrying to get better.

Speaker 1 (41:57):
Awesome, this is your second year, right yeah, second
year well, what's your favoritecourse in arizona?

Speaker 3 (42:04):
play, because you know I'm just looking at some of
these courses and I know gabehas you guys on really good ones
.
But obviously you got tpc, scottsdale, you've got uh
auction and southern dun to me.
You know I used to go out toScottsdale all the time that
that course out there for me isis one of my absolute favorites

(42:24):
at Southern dunes.

Speaker 7 (42:27):
Yeah, yeah, I think, uh, my favorites to play have to
be, uh, tpc Scottsdale, justbecause I mean it's, it's like
any other PGA course, likeyou're.
Just you're playing it, you'replaying what the pros are
playing, and that one I um it's.

(42:47):
I've come to like that one.
I've played that one a coupletimes, uh, outside of the tour
as well, um, and then AguilaAguila is another like,
surprisingly good one.
They keep that course very welland I, I like playing that one
last year.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
Awesome.
Are you going up to Sedona toplay that Masters?

Speaker 7 (43:04):
I'll be playing the next few majors.
I'll be playing those.

Speaker 1 (43:09):
Nice, so I'll see you out for those two.
10 Cup is always one of myfavorites on your tour.

Speaker 7 (43:18):
Yeah, I don't think I've ever played the 10 Cup.
I think I missed out on it lastyear because of work, but this
year I've definitely made thesmart decision to request off
months in advance so that I havean opportunity to play in these
major tournaments.

Speaker 3 (43:34):
Why would you miss the Tupac tournament?

Speaker 7 (43:37):
I just don't think I requested off early enough.
So it's just, it's got to belike three months, otherwise
they're not going to give it toyou.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
Tim, he's too young to know who Tupac is.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
So I don't know, I can't help it, man.
It's got to be me.
Well, I don't know if he's tooyoung or not.
So, Brennan, here's the debatethat Chris and I are having.
Okay.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
Now I'm just going to share something with everybody
so everybody knows I'm notmaking this up.

Speaker 3 (44:08):
So how old are you?

Speaker 7 (44:11):
I'm 17.
Are you sure you're 17?
I'm pretty sure I'm 17,.
Yeah, okay.
Who filled out your join thetour form.
Can you see this?

(44:31):
You might have to zoom in.
Yeah, I can't see it.
Well, I see, oh, oh, that wasnot me.
I'll tell you that that was notme filling that one out.

Speaker 3 (44:47):
So you're either 17 or 117.
And if you're 117, I got togive you props too.

Speaker 7 (44:56):
So I mean so, either way you know you're, I mean I
think, either way, I'm breakingsome records.

Speaker 3 (45:02):
Exactly so I don't know, I don't know, I don't know
, chris I?

Speaker 1 (45:13):
I don't know either.
This is what we're working withthat's.
You know, that's the arizonatour.

Speaker 3 (45:17):
They bring in these young old guys hold on.
Did, did your dad fill that out?
Uh, most likely yeah, okay sonow you can give him a bunch of
shit, because he doesn't evenknow when your birthday is, that
he has no idea how old you arewhen your birthday is.

Speaker 7 (45:32):
None of that stuff you got the date at light and
right, at least so just not theyear.
That's a positive yeah oh, mygod, that's.

Speaker 3 (45:38):
that's funny that you know we see all kinds of stuff
on these joining tour forums.
It's, it's, it's amazingsometimes Well anyways all good
things.

Speaker 7 (45:57):
So so you're a senior in high school or junior?
Oh yes, I'm going to be asenior next year.
So are you guys already out ofschool for the summer?
Yep, yeah, we actually um, ourlast day was the 22nd, so I got
out of school and I just I wentstraight to to california for
the event that's pretty good.

Speaker 3 (46:15):
Right there, that's pretty good, so you're gonna
spend the summer working andplaying golf pretty much, yeah,
that's.

Speaker 7 (46:21):
That's what I've got planned so far.

Speaker 1 (46:24):
And possibly.
Nationals if he can skip school.

Speaker 7 (46:28):
You know if I can save up some money?
I think my dad said he doesn'twant to pay that much, so I'll
be saving up to go.
But hopefully that's the goal.
I want to go to Nationals thisyear.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
Tell him he could give you that for your 118th
birthday it might be a littlelate, or an early birthday
present we'll take it.

Speaker 7 (46:54):
You may not make it to be 118 you never know, I
might drop that any one of thesedays this is more ammo for me.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
I appreciate it this is all good things, all right,
brian, here's the last questionfor you, and we'll let you go Of
all the courses, of all thetournaments that are left on the
Arizona schedule.
If you had some friends thatwere coming out and they were
going to play which tournamentwould you tell them to come play

(47:24):
?

Speaker 7 (47:25):
and they were going to play.
Which tournament would you tellthem to come play?
I'd have to say either Sedonaor the TPC Regional, Because
Sedona, I've never played inSedona either, but I've been
there.
I've gone there when my dad'splayed it in the past years, and
so it's just a really nice, really nice course there.

Speaker 3 (47:44):
And I mean tbc is just one of those courses that
you know if you get the chanceto play it, you got to play it
yeah, yeah, we, when we would goout there this was again a long
time ago when, before my kids, you know, went to college, we
would go out to arizona and we,we would play tpc course and our
friend who, who was a he wasn'ta pro at at TPC, but he was he

(48:10):
was a pro to a place and wewould always go there and play
and we would always play as farback as you could go, so we
would.
We would go to the farthest teebox, um and play from there,
just because and um, nowobviously it's in the summertime
and it wasn't a tournamentconditions, and play from there
just because Now obviously it'sin the summertime and it wasn't

(48:32):
in tournament conditions.
But the pro that I was playingwith never shot par or worse, he
always shot under par, evenfrom those backpack tees.
He took.
So, brandon, what you don'tunderstand is my wife is like
four foot two, okay, and she'sgot junior clubs.

Speaker 1 (48:48):
You're being generous .

Speaker 3 (48:52):
Okay, she's 4'1".
She's 4'1".
Our pro is like he's probably,he was probably 5'11" and he
would just grab a club out ofher bag.
She would use junior sets.
He says I'm playing with herclubs for this hole and he would
make par and you know, on thatcourse.
But again, he's very familiarwith it and plays it on a

(49:16):
regular basis and other things.
But TPC is a fun course withall the history.
So yeah, get out there and playit.

Speaker 1 (49:30):
Last thing, brandon, before we let you go do you know
that you have a better handicapthan your dad now?

Speaker 7 (49:37):
Well, yeah, I've had a better handicap than my dad
for a little bit now becausehe's been kind of at the 19-3
range and I think going into thePGA West I was at a 19-1.
So I was better handicappedthere.
I shot better than him thattournament.

Speaker 1 (49:58):
So you're all just switching right.
You're going to go see, he'sgoing to D.

Speaker 7 (50:03):
You know he's been playing a lot better, so his
handicap will definitely go downhere soon.
But um, you know I I wouldn'twant him to cause then I could.
Actually, you know he's got allthe excuses of oh, I'm playing
closer tee boxes and all theseother excuses?

Speaker 3 (50:20):
No, no, no, no, no, Brandon, we don't we don't play
that.
No, no, no, no, brennan, wedon't play that.
No, no, look, you're either 17or 117, and if he can't beat you
from a couple extra yardsshorter, that's a problem.
I mean, you got to just say Dad, come on, you're better than
that.

Speaker 1 (50:39):
I know your dad.
He's a good golfer, I knowexactly, he's good yeah.
He had me down five.

Speaker 7 (50:53):
One thing I have on him is I can hit the ball a lot
further than he can now.
It's a gift and a curse at sometimes.
It just depends on the hole.
That's one of the reasons I'mexcited to go to sea and move
back a little bit is becausesome of the some of the holes
just were a little too short.

Speaker 3 (51:12):
I would be getting myself in an uncomfortable,
uncomfortable spot with theclubs well, also part of getting
better is is, you know, isbetter course management, mm-hmm
, you know.
So if you're on a hole that youshouldn't be hitting far, don't

(51:33):
hit it far.
You know, take a less club.
And you know, chris, we talkabout this with Champlain guys
all the time.
I mean, that's one of thethings that they really harp on
is being smart.
You know, course management, picking your spot, knowing which
club to hit.
And you know course management, picking your spot, knowing
which club to hit.
And you know, we'll get intothis a little bit later today on
this episode.
Joe Jaspers you know, everybodyknows Joe.

(51:55):
He just qualified for US SeniorOpen.
And Chris, that's his mantraPlay, smart, play, smart, play,
smart.
Hardly his driver.
Yep, it's crazy what thesechamp card guys do teach, chris
that.
That's his mantra play, smart, play, smart play smart, hardly
his driver.
Yep, it's crazy what thesechamp guys do so that's, that's
my, that's my wisdom for you, brendan, take it for what it's

(52:16):
worth.

Speaker 7 (52:17):
The old fat guy, you know I haven't sworn club in
years, but you know, whatever, yeah, that's that's what I was
starting to do on on on Sundaywhen it was when it was getting
a little worse.
I just went to my, to myfairway finder club and it
helped me helped me secure it,that's it.

Speaker 3 (52:36):
All right.
My friend Brendan thanks somuch for joining us.
Congratulations on on on thebig win and, and hopefully, I'll
see.

Speaker 7 (52:44):
Here's all the gear for you.

Speaker 3 (52:45):
Oh, look at that, there we go, you got it.

Speaker 7 (52:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (52:48):
By the way, I like those trophies.

Speaker 7 (52:50):
Yeah, it's a nice trophy, I have to say.
It's got a nice mix of red andblue.

Speaker 1 (52:55):
Put it up there on the mantle, it'll be a nice one
to add the yeah, I got to.
I'll add it to the other twoI've got so no, no, put in the
living room so your dad sees itevery day and until he gets one,
you have bragging rights yeah, yeah, all right.

Speaker 3 (53:13):
So who does better trophies, gabe or or Don with
the regional um, I've only.
I've only got one.

Speaker 7 (53:22):
Yeah, I've only seen the one, so I'm gonna I'm gonna
have to say say, gabe, justbecause I only have, I only have
one trophy from Don.
So alright, and Gabe doespretty well with his trophies
hey, there's reasons why we dothese things.

Speaker 3 (53:39):
You know it's you give them a bunch of crap
because of the Ryder Cup.
I like just, you know, stirringthings up with tour directors
yeah, we both have big spoons inthis pot.

Speaker 7 (53:50):
Yeah, I saw the Gabe brought out.
I was staying with him down inLa Quinta for the PGA West
tournament and he brought one ofthe.
It was either I think it wasTubac, the Tubac trophy, and it
looks pretty nice.
I'm like I'm excited to to gowin that one, is it?

Speaker 3 (54:11):
is it a sculpture of two box?
Does it look like you buy it?

Speaker 1 (54:14):
It's not with a.
B and a P.

Speaker 3 (54:20):
I can't help it.
I can't help it.

Speaker 1 (54:21):
Yeah, all right, let's go.

Speaker 3 (54:25):
All right, let's go.
All right, Brandon, I this.
This is going to go downhillreal fast.

Speaker 1 (54:34):
We have too much fun here, bro.
We have way too much fun here.

Speaker 3 (54:38):
But again, thanks so much for joining us.
I really do appreciate it and, like I said, hopefully I'll see
you out at TPC, tpc Scottsdale.
If not there, we'll see youwhen you come out here to Hilton
Head.

Speaker 7 (54:50):
Yeah, well, thank you guys for having me.
Yeah, I'll definitely see youat TPC Scottsdale and hopefully
I'll see you out there inNationals All right bud, you
take care of yourself.
Yeah, you guys as well.
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (55:00):
Let's take a break from the show to hear about
Strixon's ZX Mark II drivers.

Speaker 6 (55:05):
ZX Mark II drivers are for major players major
winners, major power.

Speaker 1 (55:20):
All new ZX Mark II drivers only from Strixon.
You know, tim, it's great tosee Arizona guys win big events.
It hurts a little bit when theybeat my guys in it, but if my
guys can't win I'd love for oneof them to.
I've known Brandon for a while.
I've known his dad a little bitlonger.

(55:41):
They're good, good people.
A little inside joke there, butit was great to see him be able
to pull it off, becauseRosemary's a good player and
she'll sneak up and bite you.
So to be able to hold her offand take that victory in one of
the bigger tournaments is prettycool.

Speaker 3 (56:00):
Yeah, you know, we didn't even mention it, but you
know how I feel about kidswinning right, I mean.
To me, I think it's one of thebest things ever, because we're
so old, jesus, because themajority of us are old, and if

(56:20):
we want this to continue, wereally have to do inspiring and
get the younger generationsplaying golf and when they're
out here on tour and you knowthey're winning and it's fun for
them, that's something that'sgoing to stay with him, you know
, his entire life and continueto play and continue to compete

(56:41):
and do all those things that wetalk about.
It's so good for them to seethat at a young age and not wait
until they're 25, 30 and olderis my point Right right,
completely agree.

Speaker 1 (56:56):
I mean, who knows His golfing buddies might see this
and might get curious aboutjoining and they might start
playing.
I know the guys that I've hadon my tour that are young, you
know, have become great highschool golfers and got college
scholarships to go play and youknow it.
Just tournament environmenthelps build your skill set and

(57:22):
helps you become comfortablewhen you are playing let's say
high school golf tournaments andthings like that.
And you know golf in general isjust a good networking sport
and if you're a good golfer andyou get a job at a big company,
they may be calling you to goplay golf during the week to get
new clients in.
So it always pays it forward, pays itself forward it really

(57:43):
does it forward, pays itselfforward.

Speaker 3 (57:50):
It really does.
And you talk about, you know, kids going off to play in
college.
You know one of our firstepisodes we had Chris and Alex
Franklin on I don't know if youremember that.
We've done a lot, but I'm prettysure I'll remember as you go

(58:11):
through this.
They played on the upstateSouth Carolina tour.
Alex, at that point he had beenplaying for a little bit, not
very long, but he ended upbecoming a really, really good
golfer and I think at the timethat we had him on, I think he
was either in the B or the Cflight, ended up in the champ

(58:32):
flight and he just graduatedhigh school a couple weeks ago
and took a college scholarshipto play golf Nice and a lot of
that.
You know they kind oftransitioned out of the.
They still played on the toursome, but they of transitioned
out of the.
They still played on the toursome, but it really transitioned

(58:53):
out of the tour because of youknow the, the.
You know how college, howcollege scholarships and stuff
works.
It's points based on juniortournaments and and he had to go
and do that, which I, which Ithink is was was in a way was
was really good for him, butalso still playing in some of
the golf week events is good forhim as well, but he really

(59:20):
developed his skills andparlayed that into a golf
scholarship, which is cool.

Speaker 1 (59:23):
I mean, that's something that we strive for,
especially on our tours to getpeople better and if they, can't
get better, then what are wedoing?

Speaker 3 (59:37):
basically, right, right.
And so let's take that to theopposite.
In the spectrum here, right, Imentioned that Joe Jasper has
just qualified for the US SeniorOpen again.
Spectrum here, right, Imentioned that Joe Jasper has
just qualified for the US SeniorOpen again.
I mean, raise your hand ifyou're surprised.

Speaker 1 (59:53):
It was a matter of when.

Speaker 3 (59:55):
Why hasn't it happened?

Speaker 1 (59:55):
yet.

Speaker 3 (59:59):
But it's such a great accomplishment.
And I'm not going to say thathe qualified because he was a
member of the Ogun Golf andCamisier Tour.
But I can tell you one thingthat's where he's keeping his
skills sharp, that's where he'skeeping his competition skills
sharp and you know, I don't knowif you've ever actually watched

(01:00:20):
him play.
If you've ever actually watchedhim swing the club, you know
it's beautiful to watch.

Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
I have not, but I want to.
I eventually want to, justbecause I, you know, like HB Kim
from my tour, it just it seemsso easy, yeah, and it's so.
It's not fast.
You know lightning fast, andeveryone tells you you got to
swing hard.
It doesn't seem like you'reswinging hard.

(01:00:48):
It's crazy how it looks and itgoes a mile.

Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
You mean, his hands aren't, you know, all crusted
over and tensed up after a roundof golf.
Because he's squeezed the club.
So tight.

Speaker 1 (01:01:02):
He can't move his fingers anymore.
That's not how it's supposed tobe.
I try and go do that and it'schunk, chunk, top man.
What the hell is going on.

Speaker 5 (01:01:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:01:12):
But you know any champ flight guy.
Now that I'm in A flight I playwith most of the champ flight
guys on my tour and just theswing's so smooth.
Yeah, and you know a hole whereB C flag guys might make triple
.
These guys still come out withpar and it's amazing how not
every hole is a green and red.

(01:01:33):
But they'll take their medicine, they'll get it as close as
they can.

Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:01:38):
You know phenomenal chip and a one putt and they're
out with a par.
It's like what the hell?

Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
It's taking me two to get out of that rough trying to
hero a three-wood out offour-inch rough and it's not
going to work and it's justcrazy how they play.
But I mean, I think, throughoutall five flights we have great
players that can do, you know, hold their own, and they're
where they need to be.

(01:02:05):
That can hold their own andthey're where they need to be.
But also, as golfers, I thinkwe can take what we learn from
other players, and some may workand some may not, but I think
that's what's great about thisgame we have to figure out what
works for us, and each swing isdifferent and at the end of the

(01:02:29):
day, it's you, against your mind, and that's going to determine
what you shoot Exactly, andthat's also something when
people move up flights.

Speaker 3 (01:02:38):
That's a point that really needs to be made, because
, let's just say, brandon gotmoved from the D flight to the C
flight and I don't knowspecifically what his handicap
is now.
Let's just say it's a 17.5,okay, 17.5, whatever.
The way he gets to a 17.5 couldbe very different than his dad
who, let's just say, is a 17.5.

(01:02:59):
Like he said, he hits the ballfarther than his father, but
their handicap is the same right.
So, focusing on the part ofyour game that works for you and
getting better at your part ofthe game where you struggle at
is really important, but again,it goes down to understanding

(01:03:20):
what your game is.

Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
It does.

Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
If you know that you're a really good chipper,
chipper putter, I mean, if youknow you're really good at 100
yards and in, okay, all you haveto do is make sure that you
know you get to 100 yards whenyou're 100 yards and in you're
up and down in one right, right, right, I mean so and then

(01:03:44):
you're bogey at worse, right,right.
So I mean that's the key for a Dor C flight, better, you know.
If you're in champ flight, youknow and you're driving to 100
yards, okay, then you putyourself in position for birdie
par, as opposed to you know, seeyour D flight player, par bogey

(01:04:06):
Right, and that that's you haveto understand.
That you know for who you areand what your game is and and
how you hit the ball For sure, and I mean these courses the
originals are not easy courseseither, right?

Speaker 1 (01:04:22):
So you got to remember who you're going up
against, and it's not the champflight guys that are shooting
for over, unless you're in champflight, and I'm sorry, but know
where you're at and understandthat that triple may hurt you a
lot, or it may be something youcan brush off and get back on
track.

Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
Exactly so you know we got back on track.
Exactly, exactly so you know wegot a couple more regionals
this coming weekend.
You know, louisiana NorthRegional at Tamaka Trails.
Tamaka Trails, tupaca Trails.

Speaker 1 (01:05:06):
Don't miss that one If you're in the area.

Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
You got to go to that .
I mean, you just have to go atsome point.
If you're not there this year, you got to get there soon.
And then also we've got theSunshine State Regional at Cabot
, Citrus Farms, First time we'vebeen there.
So I think because I think I'mgoing to drive out there to that

(01:05:35):
one Go out there Saturday,Sunday, and obviously it's not a
tea time event so we won't belive, but maybe I'll go out
there and interview winners.

Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Nice Wish you could make it out.

Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
Yeah, I don't know how much you want to share, but
you've got a lot of things goingon.

Speaker 1 (01:05:53):
I do, and it's been tough, but I'll get through it.
I really don't want to go intodetail on it, but just trying to
grind through that just like 18holes on a windy day here in El
Paso.
Just get through it and seewhat happens, man.

Speaker 3 (01:06:17):
Like we talked offline.
It's not something that's justgoing to go away today or
tomorrow, the way right today ortomorrow, but, you know, baby
step, doing the things that haveto be done to to get better and
and things will take care ofitself.
Uh, eventually it's, it's a,it's a long-term, long-term deal
and and it is, and just leaveit that and and on top of that

(01:06:42):
you know I'm not going to tellthe story, tell anybody else's
story either, but you I thinkeverybody knows about what
Dennis and Jennifer are goingthrough with Jennifer's parents.
I will say this that somethingelse has come up that they're
dealing with.
It's very serious.

(01:07:06):
So we really need to make surethat we're dealing with it's um,
it's, it's, it's very serious,so so we really need to make
sure that we're thinking aboutthem, their own thoughts and
prayers, and uh you know, youknow.
I I.
I joked.
I joked that I'm trying to stayout of trouble because I don't
want to cause uh, but you know,it's the the less stress that we
can put on them right now, really, really, really the

(01:07:29):
better, right.
So you know, I'm not going totalk about, you know, the people
showing tattoos.

Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
Lean on your directors.
Yeah, if you have any questions, they'll get the answer to you.
It might be, it might not beright away, uh, but definitely
lean on them, because I think wehave a great team of directors
out there.
Yeah, and um, yeah, I meanwe're gonna get through this,
but we will at the end of theday.
You know, just like golf it's,it's something that, um, you

(01:08:04):
from and you got another 18holes the next day.

Speaker 3 (01:08:07):
That's it.

Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
That is it.

Speaker 3 (01:08:10):
That's it.
As we move forward, rememberwe've got our iron raffle.
Please make sure you Venmo meTimNATC $10 raffle, $10 a slot
Once we hit 100, we will name itoff.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
Yep, yep, that'll be exciting, it's going to be
awesome.
I challenge all the otherdirectors that listen, I'm about
to have a contest with my area,so, uh, if you all want to
throw a challenge, hit me up,send me an email and we'll see
what we can do.
Awesome, I challenge you, butyou know, you, you got your own.

(01:08:58):
You don't have a tour anymore Ican.

Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
I have own challenges .
Oh, my goodness, gracious, yeah, yeah.
Speaking of challenges, I'mlooking forward to um my, my
granddaughter's, coming down andspend spend the week with us.

(01:09:21):
So she's going to be and uh, sowish Jen luck.
She's going to have two kids inthe house for for a week, yep.

Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
It'll be all right, it'll be fun.

Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
She'll, she'll, she'll get through it.
I believe in her.

Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
Okay, you got to take a a picture of how she looks
before she gets there and then, when she leaves, a picture of
how exhausted she looks.

Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
See Well, the funny part's going to be Granddaughter
goes back home on the Sunday ofCabot Farms, oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:10:08):
So, so, Yep.

Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
I can only do what I can do.

Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
Good luck, sir, good luck.
I'll keep you in my prayers.

Speaker 3 (01:10:24):
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and let's
make sure we get, like I said,in the open, let's make sure we
get our May Player of the Monthnominations in and make sure
that you know again, I think wehad 12, 12 for April.

Speaker 1 (01:10:42):
Around there, level 12.

Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
So that's the standard now, guys.
Let's get them in let's seewhat good things are going on
all over the country, because weknow good things are happening
obviously, right, right, let'sshare it.

Speaker 1 (01:11:02):
Yeah, let's have a good time with it please.

Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Absolutely.
What do you got coming up?
Anything this weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:11:11):
I just had an event in the mountains at a new course
Well, not a renovated course.
They're trying to get some USGAevents out there, so it'll be
nice to see Got a local event.
And then I'm traveling toArizona for back-to-back majors
Okay, that'll be nice to see gota local event.
And then I'm traveling toArizona for back to back majors
okay, that'll be fun.
I gotta make up one major forwhen I was sick in March, so,

(01:11:33):
shucks, gotta go out there yougotta go all the way to Sedona
and then the next one's at 2Bach Golf Resort, my home away
from home.
So can't wait for that.
That's always a fun family trip.
They're both be family trips, but that's always a special one

(01:11:54):
because there's nothing you know, there's, there's no
distractions out there rightit's just hang out, walk the dog
around the resort, go to thewhatever holds close to your
little bungalow and chip andputt and just have a good time.
That's awesome and that's rightafter 4th of July weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
That's 4th of July, that's actually Weekend Weekend,
yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
So we'll be up there for 4th of July.
They have apparently they havea big fireworks display, so
hopefully they do.
If not, we'll drive to Tucsonand just enjoy the time out
there.

Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
That'd be awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:12:26):
And then you're when are you going to Hawaii?
So we come back?
We come back, then I have a.
I have a local tournament thatSaturday, and then I leave five
days after that.

Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
Okay, so you have some stuff going on over the
next month, month and a half.

Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
Yeah it.
So you have some stuff going onover the next month and a half.
Yeah, it's going to be a busymonth and a half.
Before I know it, it's going tobe August and you know, like I
mentioned last year, as youstart scrolling down the
tournaments to get registrationsand get everything, like I'm
running out of space, I'm justgetting pretty low down.
There it is.
It's scary, but it's scary.
It's sad, but I'm having a goodtime with it.

Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
And I know my guys are too.
That's all that matters, man.
That's all that matters.

Speaker 1 (01:13:12):
You know they're.
You know they're having a goodtime when they're inviting
friends to come play.

Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
So I've we've gotten a lot of new members this year,
which is awesome.
Good, that's good man.

Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
Good, that's good man .
Well, you take care of yourself.
All the best to the family.
Likewise, do what you got to do.

Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
I'll let Jen know that she's now down to four foot
one.

Speaker 3 (01:13:41):
As they get older, exactly as the age goes up.

Speaker 1 (01:13:44):
See, dude, my oldest is about to surpass my wife in
height, so oh, wow, it's gettingthere.
Is she doing all right withthat?
Nope, I am, because the jokeskeep coming.

Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
But yeah, I understand.

Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
You know me, I do.

Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
I do.
That's good stuff.
All you can do is laugh Right.
That's all you I do, I do.

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
That's good stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:14:09):
All you can do is laugh.

Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Right, that's all you can do.

Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
That's all we can.
All right, buddy.
Well, it's good seeing you.
You take care of yourself, andwe'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
Likewise brother.
Be safe, thank you.
