Your stew sub.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Well, it's funny.
Speaker 7 (00:55):
Worked all day
craving it and didn't get it.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
It's funny that you
bring that up, because at my
last event, I had to getsomething to eat at the turn and
they had a chicken wrap, chicken Caesar wrap and I got
that.
It wasn't as good as I canimagine a stew's wrap would be,
because it was still friedchicken, it wasn't like a
grilled chicken, which is weird.
Yeah, I mean it was good, butit wasn't a stew's wrap, good.
(01:23):
So, jr, if you're listening, when I'm there in October,

Speaker 7 (02:50):
Welcome back, Chris.
I know you've got the allergies.
You're allergic to somethingI'm allergic to bad golf.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
That's what it is.
Speaker 7 (02:57):
Is that what it is?
Yeah, we were at.
I don't know if I mentionedthis to you, but we went to
Howie in the Hills.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
You ever hear about
that, yeah.
Speaker 7 (03:10):
Because this is our
best episode in the history of
our podcast.
I don't know if we want toreference any others, but Howie
in the Hills, the MichiganResort was really nice.
The courses were beautiful, theweather was great, terry and
(03:34):
Mark got some really nicetrophies.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
I really like the
trophies.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
I saw a picture of a
flag.
Was that also included in it?
Speaker 7 (03:44):
No, well, I don't
know.
I don't know if they gave flagsor not, but, um, but trophy was
nice and one of the things thatthat mark did which I really
liked.
So they uh, part of the entryfee included.
Uh, um, they had two thingsthat were really nice, part of
the entry fee included, like aper person dollar amount in the
(04:07):
pro shop.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Nice.
Speaker 7 (04:09):
So what Mark did was
he bought five hats and then
took them to a local embroideryand had flight winner From the
course Embroidered on the sideof from the course and it looked
really nice.
Nice on the course and it lookedreally nice, Nice.
And the other thing that theydid, that I thought was
ingenious, you know, to kind ofkeep people interested and so
(04:32):
forth.
They did day two money, so theysplit the field in half and the
bottom half whoever had thelowest score on Sunday got a
$100 voucher for the pro shop.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Oh wow, Depending on
how you did on day one.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
No day two.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, but we split it
by however you did on day one.
Speaker 7 (04:57):
Day one and then day
two was whoever had the lowest
day two score.
Wow, in the bottom half Right.
Guys loved it had the lowestday two score Wow In the in the
bottom half Right.
Um, guys loved it.
I, you know I'm I don't know ifother other tours are doing
that, but I thought that wasgreat.
Um, you know you, you you'regiving giving guys who don't
(05:17):
necessarily have a chance at atat being in the money for the
regular tournament are stillgoing to walk away or something.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
It's not a waste of
time.
They're doing something otherthan skins, or your name.
Speaker 7 (05:28):
That's pretty cool,
yeah, but again the weather was
nice.
Restaurants, I mean, they hadlike five or six restaurants in
this place and it wasn't as bigas I thought it was going to be.
The resort yeah, there was lotsof it kind of reminded me a
little bit of Hilton Head, howyou know when you go in the
resort at Palmetto Dunes howthere's different communities in
(05:52):
the resort.
That's kind of how it was.
But the main resort where thehotel was, they had like five or
six restaurants, right there inthe hotel complex Interesting.
Yeah, it was nice.
So a lot of people didn't knowI was going to be there and that
was good.
So I had a good time there.
And how about you?
Speaker 1 (06:15):
You know, just
surviving every day, trying to
figure out where my golf gamewent from 2024 to 2025.
But I need to pick it up.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
We'll talk about that
in the closing.
We don't want to depresseverybody, Right, right, uh,
we'll talk about that in theclosing.
We don't want to.
We don't want to depresseverybody.
We got a great episode today,Uh, so again, real good episode.
We're going to talk to Rogerand we've got the winners from
the from the regional admissionend.
So, um, we, we need to get onRoger a little bit.
(06:44):
I mean, he outdid himself thispast week.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yes, that's going to
be a fun story to talk about.
Speaker 7 (06:56):
So let's go ahead and
bring Roger in.
Roger, welcome back bud.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Thank you, I think
I'm going to be glad to be here.
Speaker 7 (07:11):
Well, I don't know,
because I I need to tell you, I
I don't know.
I I got lyle's text before Igot your text.
So, um, I don't even know howto explain this.
I I've never, you know, I I'venever heard of this happening
before you.
You were, you like, I said I, Igot lyle's text before I got
(07:31):
your text and, and, roger, Idon't even know how to explain
this, I've never heard of thisbefore, what?
So?
So you're gonna have to telleverybody what happened, because
I, again, I've got no words sobefore I start, I gotta tell
this isn't the first time.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
That's the problem.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Oh no, this is not
the first time.
I wouldn't say that.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
The first time it's
happened on tour.
Speaker 7 (07:53):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
I've gone to a golf
course and I open up my trunk
and my clubs are not there.
Speaker 7 (07:59):
Oh, my God.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
My excuse.
I have three different carsthat I drive.
My excuse.
I have three different carsthat I drive and I have my SUV,
and then I have my sedan andthen I have a convertible.
But the night before I decidedto switch cars at the last
minute and I threw some stufflike my shoes in the car and my
bag of like we feel the one ballroll.
(08:21):
But it is key that you throwyour clubs in the trunk too.
Speaker 7 (08:25):
That's important.
That's important.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
And I have like extra
things in my SUV anyway and I
had like a bag in there andmaybe I saw that bag and I saw,
oh yeah, I got my clubs.
So I get to the court and itwas our 20 hour and 20 minute
drive down to North Carolina.
We're playing.
Yeah, open up my trunk and well, golly, there's no clubs in
(08:48):
there.
So just a couple of spares that, like, I have some extra clubs
I go practice with.
So that was an adventure, yeah.
So I borrowed the pro shop, gave me a 64 degree sandwich and
a putter.
I had a driver actually in mycar and a couple of clubs, and
(09:09):
then some guys lent me someclubs.
So I keep smell the settogether.
But it didn't really work outand not having a pitching wedge
was the death of me.
It was.
Yeah, that was because I canhit a 64 degreedegree wedge
about 30 yards.
That doesn't help for the100-yard shots.
Speaker 7 (09:27):
No, that's going to
take you three there, so how did
?
But you didn't finish lastthough, right?
No, I didn't no actually.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
So the first day and
I was going to mention about
what you said what that othertour did with the money was
pretty interesting.
So I rode with a guy and Lyleactually made an announcement.
The guy I rode with I took overhis reign because he had done
the same thing and it was just acoincidence that we were riding
together he said roger cowan, you're taking over for dave
(09:55):
slosson and uh.
So dave lent me some clubs, butdave and I were about uh in the
in the middle point.
We had 24 guys I think it wasin our flight and we were right
smack in the middle, so not toobad.
I got a driver and I puttedpretty well.
But the funny thing was whatyou said about that second day
(10:16):
score.
Dave ended up the guy I rodewith.
He ended up having the lowestscore in our flight that day, so
he would have won that moneyyou were talking about, but he
ended up catapulting himself.
Tied for third, I guess it was.
Speaker 7 (10:30):
Oh, wow, but he wins
twice.
Yeah, oh, he would have wontwice.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Yeah, yeah, so he
would have won twice, yeah, and
I moved up to like 10th out of24.
So I was overall can't complaintoo much about that, but I
learned a lesson.
Speaker 7 (10:46):
Well, well, you do
have another option, right?
You could just have a completeset for each car.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Each car.
That's a good idea.
Speaker 7 (10:54):
And then you know I
won't have to worry about it.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
That's a great idea.
Well, because I asked you whyyou didn't just rent a set from
the course.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
That would have been
a whole lot easier.
I wasn't thinking, yeah well, aset from the course.
A whole lot easier, I will.
Speaker 6 (11:08):
I wasn't thinking,
yeah, well, I think I told you,
I'm a cheapskate, so that's,that's the real reason, oh, yeah
, I did like my, so I had a epiccallaway, epic driver that I
regularly play with.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Anyway, I guess that
those expert clubs were a couple
of clubs I had taken to therange to like practice with.
So at least I had some of theclubs that I actually did like
right now filled in with theothers, but that's yeah so I
hopefully I've learned my lesson, but it was.
It was a good, it was a, it wasa, it was a lot of fun actually
(11:37):
I'm sure yeah sure it was so.
Speaker 7 (11:40):
So I did a tournament
one time where a guy it was on
a Sunday in Atlanta and a guyshowed up on Sunday after a
bachelor's party and forgot hisshoes.
Oh, he was barefoot, oh, likeno shoes.
Like no shoes, no shoes.
Had his clubs, but no shoes, and I said I'm okay.
(12:06):
If the course is okay with it,I'm okay with it.
Good luck, don't hurt yourself.
Um yeah you know so, butwithout the club that that's a
first rider but, yeah, butthanks, but thank you.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Thank you for that
I'm just hoping somebody takes
over my reign someday, but Idon't know that that's going to
happen.
That's tough to be.
Speaker 7 (12:29):
What do you have for
us this week?
Speaker 3 (12:34):
So last time we did
this, I mentioned about.
Definitions are important and Idon't want to bore people
listening to this, but there's areason I want to talk about
definitions, because some stuffcame up already this year and
it's really key to playing thegame and what you can do and
what you can't do.
And even before the definitions, old habits are really hard to
(13:01):
break and believe.
It's been six years now sincethe 2019 rules changes, which
doesn't seem that you know it'ssix years, that's a long time,
but some of the wording haschanged and even like penalty
areas versus hazards, temporarywater versus casual water and
things like that.
(13:21):
And for a rules guy and in anyof these websites I'm on or chat
groups, we all always stillcringe because people aren't
using the right terms.
And it does make a differencesometimes because you've got to
make sure you've got the termright so that you can give the
right ruling.
Okay, and like it's temporarywater now, not casual water.
(13:45):
Like I said, and I'm bringingthat up for a reason, because
I'm going to go over somethingand my friends are some of my
golf friends that aren't on tourand even the tour guys that I'm
in a tech group with.
They're good sports becausesometimes I'll ask them what do
you mean by?
What's the answer to this?
And I'll be surprised if theyget it right.
And usually it's not a trickquestion.
(14:05):
I don't try to trick peoplelike the USDA tries to trick
people on those rules test.
I swear they do.
But it's a good gauge for me togo over stuff like on this
podcast, because I know whatpeople know and what they don't
know.
So a couple of things likedefinitions, though, like what
(14:29):
is the definition of a ball outof bounds, and that's like one
that I will give my friends, orwhat is the definition of a ball
when is a ball in a penaltyarea so for out of bounds?
And I like to use that onebecause if you're out of bounds
you get one of the harshestpenalties there's no going back.
You have to go back, playanother ball, plus get a penalty
(14:51):
stroke.
Hope you hit it in the fairwaythe next time.
And then now let's say it was atee shot.
Now you're hitting your fourthshot.
So, out of bounds is only whenthe ball is completely out of
bounds.
The whole ball needs to becompletely out of bounds is only
when the ball is completely outof bounds.
The whole ball needs to becompletely out of bounds.
If it's off a line.
Let's say there's a paintedwhite line on the ground and
(15:13):
part of it touches that line, you're good.
If it's stakes and you line itup and any part of it is on that
imaginary line, even just thesliver of it, you're inbound and
that's important because youjust save yourself stroke and
distance.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Right right.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Okay.
Now how about a ball in apenalty area?
I almost said water hazard In apenalty area?
It's almost like I'll say theopposite as long as any part of
it touches that part of it, it'sin the penalty area.
Okay, so the whole ball doesn'thave to be in the penalty area.
(15:56):
If it just is on the red line,it's considered in the penalty
area.
So those are two good examplesof knowing.
The definition is importantbecause it could save you a
stroke or it could also cost youa stroke.
For those definitions and I wasmentioning about casual it used
(16:20):
to be called casual water, nowit's called temporary water.
In the tournament I just playedin this past weekend, we had a
red stake and the red stake wasliterally 20 yards into the
water and we're looking at itlike and a guy's ball was on the
edge of this water, but the redstake was 20 yards deep, okay,
(16:44):
so what is that water in betweenthe red stake and where we were
standing in the fairway?
What is that water considered?
That's considered temporarywater.
It's not part of the penaltyarea.
Uh, does that?
Can you picture that?
Yeah, yeah.
So the player was going to getfree relief from from that, not
(17:09):
from the penalty area.
He's going to get free relieffrom the temporary water, and
temporary water falls under oneof the four things that are
called abnormal courseconditions and that's where
temporary water stands.
So, um, that was importantthere because on this course I
played with a guy that playedthere regularly and he said
(17:31):
normally that water is 20 yardsthe opposite side of the red
stake, so something.
It wasn't like we had had awhole lot of rain, but I guess
it was high tide or whatever itwas.
So it's important that you knowwhat the definition is out of
bounds, penalty area, temporarywater versus the red penalty
(17:53):
area, so that you can apply theright rule or not have to take a
penalty stroke where you're notneeding to.
Exactly so I was thinking aboutpenalty errors.
I was going to say about apenalty area when you're Give me
(18:22):
one sec here, because I wrotesomething down that I thought
was oh, about the penalty areas,uh, and and the temporary water
?
That's what I was.
So there's no such thing astemporary water in a penalty
area and the reason that?
Just think about this for a sec.
A lot of you know, with the newdefinition of penalty areas,
(18:45):
woods are now penalty areas allover the place.
Where in the past they weren'tPenalty areas were water hazards
, basically right Before most ofthem.
But now so many courses arelining, at least where we live,
so many courses have the woodsas penalty areas.
But let's say you go in thosewoods and there's water there,
(19:08):
even temporary, it rains.
Well, you don't get relief forthat because you're in a penalty
area.
So there's no relief fortemporary water in a penalty
area.
That make sense.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
So that happened as
well because we were in the the,
it happened at the course wewere at.
And then another thing aboutlike what is the definition of?
You know, where does a penaltyarea start?
And if it's not marked I thinkI've mentioned this before If
it's a pond there and there's nored stakes, yeah, I had one guy
(19:46):
say, well, there's no stakes, you can't take relief.
I say the definition within thepenalty area includes things
like ponds, ditches, lakes, water features, even if they're
not marked.
And that penalty area wouldstart basically where the slope
of the ground goes down.
(20:06):
And if it's a flat area, basically you would make a
judgment call If you had to callin the committee, like where
does it start, where does it end?
And that happened in the groupI was playing with.
A guy's ball went into the area.
There were no stakes but therewas just water everywhere and we
could tell it wasn't, it was,it was.
(20:27):
It was basically more like a aditch, I'd say than a than a
lake, and we gave him releasebecause it was water that was
always there.
So that was a penalty area.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
And generally you'd
be able to tell where the water
would stop, the high water markor what have you.
There would be any grass, there'd be grass or no grass.
Obviously, sometimes that's notthe case and then you've got to
make that call, but most of thetime you're going to be able to
(21:05):
tell really pretty easy wherethe penalty area is now and not
the hazard line.
Good job.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
You're doing good,
Chris.
Go to the hazard class.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
Well, you got me a
few weeks ago on that.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Yeah, right.
And then, like on my homecourse, we have it's lined by
ditches and it gets very wet outthere, but often the water
overflows and I end up having totake relief for temporary water
and that that comes up in ourtournaments there as well.
(21:40):
It's temporary water Again.
There's lots of otherdefinitions.
Those are really important, just to know, because so many
people go.
They either hit the ball out ofbounds or you have to bring
your partner over to see.
All right is it?
inbounds, is it not inbounds?
But you need to know thatbecause, like I said, it's one
(22:01):
of the harshest penaltiesstroking this Exactly, yeah,
yeah, because, like I said, it'sone of the harshest penalties
stroking this.
Exactly that was it that I hadfor those.
I mean, there's tons more and Icould go over a few each week
or something, but I thoughtthose were important, yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
I can't believe it's
been six years since the rule
changed.
It seems like it was just acouple of years ago.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Yep 2019, january 1st
2019.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
We need to get.
If your ball's on a divot, getfree relief.
That needs to become a rulealready.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
I will never agree
with that.
I'm sorry, and you know thesetech groups I'm on.
That question comes up all thetime and we will get 100
responses and replies on it andyou know most, most of them.
Uh, yeah, it goes probably 5050.
But like, what's animperfection?
(22:56):
What's a divot?
What's not a divot?
What if it was a divot fromthree weeks ago?
That's still, that's kind ofgrown in but not not grown in.
It's all that.
What if somebody filled in asand?
So I'm a member of these ruleschat groups and then you get a
lot of people talking about well, if I'm playing with my buddies
(23:17):
, it's like, well, this is achat group about the rules.
If you're playing with yourbuddy, do whatever you want.
People come here to find outthe actual rules.
And you know what's surprisingabout those chat groups and that
people they really don't.
A lot of people don't realizelike there are things like the
golf week amateur tour, that weplay by the rules, or that
(23:38):
there's competitions and allthat kind of stuff.
Like there's like what do youcare what the rule is?
We're not on tv playing.
I say, well, I know, we're anorganization that has 10 000
people that play in it.
I think that's what we're up to, something like that, and we
play by the rules.
So you know it.
Speaker 7 (23:55):
It is good to have
the knowledge it, it is, and,
and maybe you know again, there's nothing wrong with
playing with your buddies.
It's fun, it is what it is, butwhen, when, but when you're
playing by the rules, the gamereally changes.
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Yes, Yep, and I'm
totally so.
Sometimes I get in competitionswith guys that never have to
play by the rules and I'm notthat good a golfer, but when
they get out I crush them likeevery time by like 15 or 20.
(24:30):
I'm talking like literally andit's like well, now you know
what it's like to play by therules.
It's like, wow, this wasdifferent.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Exactly yeah,
especially the gimmies, and we
don't do gimmies People areupset about that.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
So we're not supposed
to be doing that.
What?
Right uh, other than you know, other than definition, I'll just
say the first couple oftournaments it's when we've
talked about these things beforethat it's basically the same.
Those same basic elements keepcoming up relief from a car,
path, path and water, hazard, penalty areas, things like that.
(25:07):
Those are the same things thatare coming up and knowing about
the basics on those have come upin our tournaments that have
started this year so far.
I think our tour has had threetournaments so far.
Speaker 7 (25:22):
Yeah, and like always
you have uh real good turnouts.
I mean, obviously loud clouddoes a great job there and you
guys have have uh huge turnoutsum, uh I.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
I just gotta ask you
guys something you didn't notice
I learned.
I'm a quick learner.
I'm maybe not about rememberingmy clubs, but I'm a quick
learner about one thing Inoticed in a past video with one
of your guys.
Speaker 9 (25:51):
They had a trophy in
the background, so I don't know
if you can see I put a trophyback there.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
I hope I earn another
one in the next couple of years
.
Speaker 7 (26:01):
Well, let's put it
this way, roger we made a deal
with Kevin Odom from theLouisiana North Tour If he wins
three in a row, he's going to bea regular guest.
So you forget your clubs threetimes in a row, we'll create a
new segment for you.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
That sounds good, all
right.
Yeah, they've got twotournament two days in a row,
two separate tournaments on ourtour, but I'm out of town the
next one, so it'll be a whilesince I get to play again, which
I'm going to miss it.
But yeah, I'm done.
Okay this year so far.
Standings-wise.
Speaker 7 (26:40):
Well, what's that
trophy that you got back here?
Speaker 3 (26:43):
That was the 2022
regional that I won, so that's
probably my best one.
Regional yeah, I don't thinkI've won since then, so I don't
think I won any.
I know I didn't win any in 2024.
Speaker 7 (27:01):
Well, you've got to
bring your own clubs.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Right.
Speaker 7 (27:04):
Really helps.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
Yeah, that helps.
That'll definitely help.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Yeah, it did make you
appreciate some.
Like I said, I didn't have apitching wedge and I did have a
nine iron, a borrowed nine iron, but it just wasn't the same and
not having a pitching wedge ora gap wedge was just killer.
Yeah, which you can imagine.
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 7 (27:24):
Yeah, was just killer
, yeah, which you can imagine.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, when a numberof years ago, when I was
playing a lot and traveling alot, I I actually had two sets
of clubs, one set that Itraveled with that just pretty
much stayed in my travel airtravel bag, and then the sets I
would normally play with and, um, yeah, that you know that way,
if something ever happened, I Ihad the extra set, but the
(27:45):
travel set was just never had toworry about forgetting to pack
something up in it or anything.
We just took off and went.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
I might have to get
three sets, in case I leave a
set out, of course.
Speaker 7 (27:56):
Oh my goodness, I'm
going to hook you up with my
buddy Will Allen from Atlanta.
I'm going to hook you up withmy buddy Will Allen from Atlanta
.
Will Allen was a guy who got inhis car, drove all the way to a
tournament, played in thetournament and after the
tournament was over, realized heleft his car keys at home oh no
yeah, so anyway.
(28:23):
Well, roger, thanks so much Forall that you do and we'll see
you here real soon.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
Okay, thank, you guys
appreciate it, see you buddy.
Speaker 7 (28:33):
Let's take a break
from the show to hear about
Strixon's ZX Mark II irons.
Speaker 10 (28:38):
A great iron set
Needs more than good looks.
It's gotta be fast and gotta bepure, but good looks.
It's got to be fast and got tobe pure, but good looks never
hurt either.
The all-new ZX Mark II ironsfrom Strixon.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Yeah, tim, it's great
to have Roger back on.
You know, it's been a littlewhile since we've had him, but
it's always a pleasure to havehim on there and being able to
define these rules and thesesayings, because, because, um,
you know, you don't have theprivilege of getting it as much
as I do now, but, uh, during thetournaments, getting rules
(29:12):
questions while I'm trying toplay is not fun, um, but I think
my guys are understanding that.
You know, just play two balls, because I'm gonna ignore your
eight texts as you send me, andyou're probably done with that
hole anyway, and you played twoballs anyways and you're you
probably with that hole anywayand you played two bowls anyways
and you're probably going toscore on both of them, right, so
, um, but it's great to have theclarification, cause I I've
known some guys that have toldme, uh, because of his segments
(29:35):
they know the rules better andthey've actually used some of
his.
I don't want to call them cheatsheets, but uh, but being able
to use the role in youradvantage, to their advantage,
and it's helped them out.
So it's always great to haveRoger on here.
It is.
Speaker 7 (29:51):
You know, and so I
sent him a question, you know, a
few weeks ago, and I keptsaying hazard, kept saying
hazard.
And he said, tim, I don't knowwhat you're talking about.
I said what are you talkingabout, roger?
Just answer the question, man.
He said I don't know what ahazard is.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Right, it's out of
his system now.
Speaker 7 (30:14):
He said did you mean
penalty area?
Yes, yeah, I did.
You knew, that's what I meant.
He laughed, he laughed.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Now we have the upper
hand with him forgetting his
clubs.
I know someone who went out toa party for his birthday the day
before retirement and had toget a ride home, which was great
, but didn't realize that hiscar was in a parking garage that
was closed Sundays, and guesswhere his clubs were.
Didn't realize that his car wasin a parking garage that was
(30:48):
closed Sundays, oh boy, andguess where his clubs were in
the garage Closed parking garage.
Speaker 7 (30:52):
Yeah, oh my goodness.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
And he had to go to
the course and he had to
actually rent clubs and, uh, hedidn't do pretty bad.
But you know he tried to planahead and and good thing he did,
but I mean I guess he had toomuch fun to be able to drive
home.
Speaker 7 (31:11):
His name wasn't Chris
, was it?
I'm not talking about you.
No, it was not me.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
But I'm not going to
confirm or deny any allegations
of that.
I just think it's funny becauseyou know we all try our best,
like even me, especially whenI'm traveling and have to drive
to the location.
I'll stop maybe five, tenminutes because I'm like, damn
it, I packed my bag.
I might as well stop now andget to the destination and not
(31:37):
have my bag.
So even I do that, but at leastI check way before an hour and
a half at the parking lot of thegolf course oh, you got you
it's.
Speaker 7 (31:50):
I shouldn't have to
say this, but you gotta have
your clubs yes, yeah, especiallyfor a golf tournament.
Yes, well, roger, roger'sawesome.
Obviously he's a good sportwith that and um you know, he,
he mentioned he said it wasn't alot a lot of content, but I I
those two pieces of informationthat that he gave is huge.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
I mean, right, it's,
it's, it could be a difference
between two and three strokes, definitely, I mean, and you can
use it on any course during anytime of the season.
Yeah, um it, it, it will.
You said it'll help you savestrokes At the same time.
I'm pretty sure there's been atime where you're like man, is
(32:30):
this temporary water or is this, you know, penalty area?
Um or if, if we're a team, havea shotgun at 7am and the spring
cruise just got turned off, uh,and there's a collection of
water somewhere, what are myoptions?
So it's always great to knowthose things, because you never
(32:52):
know when you can use it or youcan help somebody else with that
information Right, exactly, exactly, well, you know.
Speaker 7 (33:01):
Again, roger, thanks,
we need to make sure we thank
him for his time and everybodyunderstands amount of time that
Roger puts into doing thesesegments for us.
I don't think people realize wegive him some just general
topics and then he— he runs withit and he goes and does
research and really does prepareto come on.
(33:23):
And you know it's it's so I andhe does.
He does it because he loves it,he does it because he loves the
tour and wants to help and andyou know we, we can't thank him
enough for for what he does Forsure For us.
Roger, thanks, we really doappreciate it and obviously
we'll we'll talk to you againhere real soon.
Appreciate it and obviouslywe'll talk to you again here
(33:45):
real soon.
Chris, hello, what the hell inthe hills?
Speaker 1 (33:51):
I just, mary, I just
love saying I think of a band.
That'd be a good name for aband.
Would it Like like a jazz bandor a I don't know, but it'd be a
pretty cool band name so um andand again I, as we said in the
opening, it was great um, Ireally here's.
Speaker 7 (34:14):
You know, there's a
difference between the seniors
and golf week in the golf weekside.
Um, obviously the competitionis the same.
Everybody wants to win, but thesenior side guys are just much,
much more laid back, stillhaving as much fun.
Competition is still there, butit just seems down a notch.
(34:37):
I don't know if it's.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
No, I agree you know
what I mean.
When I was director of thesenior tour here, the guys would
come in and they'd turn intheir scorecard, but they really
didn't even care how it endedout.
You know, let's get a drink, let's hang out, let's just talk.
And they were just having agood time trying to get out of
the house.
(34:59):
Most of them were retired, soyou know, just being able to go
out there and be with a group ofguys and gals that just wanted
to go out and play some golf, some competitive golf they just
seemed real chill about it andwhether they missed their last
putt to win or get into theprize money, they were like,
okay, well, it is what it is,and I think just having those
(35:23):
years under their belt kind ofgives you that attitude of
nothing you can do to change it.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
Exactly exactly, and
you know, saw a lot of people
there that wasn't expecting.
I saw one of my Atlanta membersthere, Jesse Durham.
It was good to see him.
Shep Ellis from he's in adeflate in Orlando, met him in
(35:49):
Chicago when I was tour directorup there, so it was really good
seeing him.
Charlie James Saw him.
Let's see who else was there.
Robbie Got to see RobbieRobinson and I'll come back to
Robbie here in a second.
But Saul, let's see who elsewas it?
Gary Granback from Chicago whoI met when we were up there.
(36:13):
Oh, I know I'm missing somebody.
Shane McAdams yeah, Tampa Tourdirector.
He was there.
Nice, A lot of people had agood time Again, not expecting
to see them along with some ofthe other people that were up
(36:34):
there.
So it was a good time, but I hadan opportunity to sit down and
talk to Robbie a little bit andI was really surprised.
Robbie told me how the podcasthim being on the podcast changed
(36:55):
his life Really and that's nota joke.
That's not a joke to thinkabout his time in the service in
a different way and got him toopen up about some of the things
(37:16):
that he's been keeping.
Keeping back Right.
Yeah, I was shocked, and sowhen we do this, it was
something that number one Iwasn't expecting, and it's not
(37:37):
about us, it's always about them, it's always about the members.
It made a big impression on meand I want to let you know that,
how much he appreciated, howmuch he appreciated us having
him on, even though he didn'twant to do it.
Speaker 8 (37:57):
Right.
Speaker 7 (37:58):
But he's.
But he was so glad that he didit and he wants to come on again
.
I said, well, we'll have you onit.
You know, whenever you're noton the cruise if you want to
come on, you know well, wheneveryou're not on the cruise, if
you want to come on, you knowwe'll have you on.
But I want to let you know that.
And I told him.
I said you know, other veteranshave told us no, I'm not going
to force anybody to come on.
(38:19):
If you don't want to come on,that's fine.
And people have differentreasons for wanting to and not
wanting to, especially from thatperspective.
And you know we respect that.
And you know I think I neverreally looked at it from the,
from his perspective and andsome of the things that he he
(38:40):
really at the time had nointerest in in bringing up and I
you know when we do this.
we just kind of let them goRight.
What you want to talk aboutwith your military service and
we don't want to talk about that, we won't, we won't bring up
and go on from there.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Yeah, I mean, we
usually give them how they say.
You know, we give them thefloor and let them kind of leave
that conversation because sometopics can be harder to talk
about than others.
Yeah, because some topics canbe harder to talk about than
others.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
Yeah, and we're not
here to bring up any past
remorse or any bad memories.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
We're just here to
Celebrate, yeah, so I mean
that's awesome.
I'm glad you shared thatbecause you know we hear it all
the time, especially duringnationals, as we're walking
around you and me.
You know we get the complimentsand this and that, but I don't
think everybody understands howdifficult it can be to come up
here.
And now that we're video, youknow, when we were just audio it
(39:40):
was a little easier, and nowthat we're video those nerves
can come up and we appreciateeveryone that comes on there,
because without them we wouldn'thave anything to talk about and
we wouldn't have a podcast.
Speaker 7 (39:54):
Let's get into the
winners bud.
Let's do it.
Welcome to the famed MissionInn Resort.
We've been playing here overthe last two days.
They've taken really good careof us.
We're sitting in here in theVista room.
They've got us set up Us.
We're checking in and scoringwas.
The staff here has been reallygood.
Good, we've got our firstchampion of the of the.
We've got our first champion ofthe tournament.
In is dave rummels and thechamp flight dave.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
congratulations on
the win this week.
It was, uh, it was a tough, tough the two days out there for
everybody.
So it was just trying.
I'm trying to hang in there asbest you can and hopefully make
a few birdies.
I didn't make a single birdieyesterday and I didn't make a
birdie the front nine.
So I finally got it going thelast nine, but it was.
It's really difficult.
I think the main problem youhave out here is it's so tight
(40:37):
and if you miss the fur we get alot of iffy the abs, real iffy
like, and you know you have tohit a lot of shots under tree
limbs and stuff.
And you know I felt like at thefront nine, even though I had
seven in a row, I had somedecent shots but I just couldn't
make a par.
I either had mud on the ball orI was in a rut or in a tree.
I just could not seem to make apar.
(40:58):
I had some poor chip shots.
Really.
I mean I didn't really hit anygood chip shots in that stretch.
And in the back nine I had itgoing.
I had four buries and I shouldhave had a fifth At 10, I had an
easy chip just off the frontedge and didn't get that up and
down.
So that kind of got me going.
I said, hey look, you know yougot to get, got to get it.
Now is the time.
You got to run out of holes.
(41:19):
You only got eight holes left.
You got to turn around.
Speaker 7 (41:25):
Then I made two talk
about the mindset again, because
you know looking at yourscorecard seven bogeys in a row.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
I've never done that
since I've been playing golf.
Speaker 7 (41:34):
And then you turn
around, talk about the mindset.
Speaker 4 (41:37):
I already came up
here knowing that.
When I told my wife, I said ifI make a bunch of bogeys I'm not
going to get mad, because Iknow how tough a course it is,
because if you get mad on thiscourse you're gonna shoot
mid-eighths.
So I just try to stay patient.
I think for me, uh, since Idon't play much golf, my short
game is is not up to thestandard that needs to be.
(41:59):
So when I miss greens, like Idid on those sevens in a row, I
didn't.
I didn't get any up and downbecause I didn't hit it close
enough.
You know, I had a money, manychips.
I left 12, 15 feet short.
So you can't do that.
The score you've got to be ableto get them inside of three,
four feet and really that's thearea where it's really touch and
you have to practice in it.
Speaker 7 (42:18):
Yeah, and it's the
touch that's going to be able to
be able to get, like you said, inside that three feet.
Speaker 4 (42:25):
Yeah, I really, to be
honest with you, I haven't
played in competitive golf since2016,.
So I don't practice at all.
I play nine holes or 18 holes aweek.
That's it on Thursdays, and Imight hit occasional balls here
and there, but not enough toreally to be consistent.
So now that I turn amateur Ijust turned amateur about two
months ago I'm going to try toplay some tournaments, so
(42:45):
hopefully my boss will let meplay a little bit more.
He's kind of tough.
He was squealing when I had twodays off on the week.
He said you're taking a weekoff.
You can't do that.
You know we're busy.
I said, ryan, I gave you athree-month notice.
You knew I was going to takethe time off.
So he'll think he'll be okaywith me taking a few days off,
(43:06):
but I still have thatcompetitive fire off.
Uh, but I still have thatcompetitive fire.
You know, I played professionalgolf for 36 years, so I still
have that desire to play and I'mgetting the age now, right, you
know it's almost too late, I'm67.
So, oh, it's like it's.
It's not just.
I still have it.
Like I said, I still have adesire.
I just want to play sometournaments.
It's just fun to get the nervesgoing.
Yes, I don't know, for somereason I I actually enjoy that
(43:28):
it's.
I don't know if I'm somethingwrong with me, but I think
there's something wrong with allthat.
It's just I thought why I wantto put myself through that
punishment.
But I I enjoyed just trying toto fight the nerves and just
play the best you can throughall that.
Speaker 7 (43:43):
But that's kind of
who we are right yes, I mean,
that's one of the reasons why wedo this.
You, you know, you talk aboutage.
You know, a couple of years agowe had somebody in the A-flight
who was 71 years old, won anational championship oh shit,
in the golf week, not the seniorside.
So it's everybody out therelistening.
It's never too late to pick upthe club no-transcript mad.
Speaker 4 (44:18):
I came close a couple
of times, losing my cool today.
But you know, I just I kepttelling myself, just hang in,
hang in.
Everybody else is playingpoorly.
If you just get it going, youmight have a chance.
Speaker 7 (44:27):
Yeah, and that's,
that's the other thing too.
I mean this, this, this tour.
You know we don't, we don'trelish in other people playing
poorly, you know that is yeah, Idon't like to see that.
Speaker 4 (44:38):
I don't like to see
it, and especially in the group
you're playing in, cause Iactually sometimes, if you're
playing well and there's otherguys in a, it's like the
language is bad.
Yes, it's difficult to stayfocused, and that's kind of what
happened with our two groupsfor two days.
The course conditions weretough enough that if you weren't
hitting the ball well, you'regoing to shoot some high scores.
Speaker 7 (44:59):
So, which is the
toughest course, do you think?
Speaker 4 (45:03):
I didn't play but I
wrote down the one we played the
first day because it's muchtighter and much quirkier.
There's a lot of blind shots onthe other east.
So I didn day because it's it'smuch tighter and much quirkier.
There's a lot of blind shots onthe other east.
Yeah, yeah, so I didn't.
I didn't play a practice roundso I didn't know where I was
going.
The first day I had no idea onsome holes.
So I played this other one acouple times when I first opened
.
So I I remembered a few holesbut but it's been 30 some years
since I've gone.
(45:23):
So I I really had to reallyjust kind of like pick out a
yardage how far I wanted to hitit or the tee and try to stay
back away from the tree linesand stuff.
So that's the hardest part outhere because you want to try to
get down as far as it can.
But some of those holes youcouldn't take that chance
because the tree line kind ofand there it was and there it
was down where he and I had acouple on the front and I was in
the fairway having my shot, Iwas underneath the tree tree and
(45:45):
punch it.
Unfortunately I didn't hit goodshots coming in.
You've got to have a lot ofdiscipline on a course like this
.
You've got to stick to yourguns and play high percentage
golf, even if it leaves youlonger shots into the green.
Speaker 7 (45:59):
That's one thing.
That's also fine with Chanfletplayers.
You guys go in with a plan andyou pick your spot.
We're as high handicapped.
Speaker 4 (46:08):
It doesn't matter,
we're pulling out driver.
The thing that really gets awaywith most people is when they're
not swinging well, they go awayfrom the game plan.
They start playing moreaggressive Right and that's what
really gets you in trouble.
And a course like this youcan't.
You have to be disciplinedRight and say like I only need
to hit a5 off this tee.
You have to do it because ifyou start getting aggressive it
(46:30):
can really get you in trouble.
I'll give you a big number, yeah, big numbers.
Doubles and triples prettyeasily.
Well, dave, thank you so muchfor all of us, and I was
congratulating us.
Thanks for having us.
We'll talk to you soon.
Sounds good, all right.
Speaker 7 (46:40):
Welcome back to the
Vista Room, the Mission Resort.
We've got Dwayne.
Congratulations on the win thisweekend, Thank you, Thank you.
A-flight is tough competition.
I mean looking at the scores, you went 74-81, 1-by-2 over Al
Clerico.
Talk about the round yesterday.
Speaker 9 (46:58):
Well, yesterday it
was some good shots, some lucky
shots and some pretty goodputting, and the course was in
really good shape.
The greens were beautiful and Igot lucky on a few shots and
made a few puts.
Speaker 7 (47:17):
And today, you know,
talk to some players that have
come in.
Some said yesterday was tougher, some said today was tougher.
Today was tougher.
Speaker 9 (47:24):
What was tougher
today?
Way tougher today.
I think one thing the greenswere faster.
The greens yesterday were plush.
You know medium speed wastougher today, way tougher today
, I think, uh, one thing thegreens were faster.
Um, the greens yesterday wereplush.
Um, you know medium speed, soyou could, you know, you, you
didn't feel you felt comfortablerolling the ball up to the hole
and not worrying about gettingtoo far by today.
Um, some of the pin placementson some of these holes were
murderous.
Um, you know it was.
(47:45):
It was a lot of fun, uh, butyou know, you have so much
elevation change right on thiscourse and it really got all of
us at some point during a roundI think it was on number six
today it was straight up thehill, I almost got to the green
and then it rolls back down 40yards and then I hit it and it
(48:09):
rolls back down 40 yards and Ihit it and I get to about 20
yards and then I hit it over theback.
So it was one of those coursesthat, especially in Florida, you
don't get to play a lot, a lotof flat courses down here.
Speaker 7 (48:25):
Yeah, so I mean you
were paired with Al and Robin.
You were up by four over Algoing in today and five over
Robin, but you shot 81 and theyboth won 79.
How was it going back and forthwith that group today?
Speaker 9 (48:41):
Oh it was great, you
know we all.
So I started out one under forthe first five holes and felt
really comfortable.
But then we got into the teethof the golf course and um, robin
is a little bit longer than meand Al and Al is very consistent
um in his, in his shots, um, Igot a little wobbly on a couple
(49:02):
of holes, um, and that broughtthem right back into the, into
the match, um and uh, but I madea few birdies.
That that kept it, you know, kind of bouncing back and forth.
Robin made a good number ofbirdies.
Al was all day long just barelyoutside the hole for birdie.
So he, he didn't get one today.
Uh, he deserved it.
He hit some really good shots, some really good putts and they
(49:24):
just didn't fall.
Well, that's, that's just kindof how it works.
Speaker 7 (49:26):
sometimes you know
and and, and you just kind of
hang on and and and win.
But you know, for me it's it'sa competition, especially when
you know you, you're in the lastgroup and then the winner comes
out of last group and the otherother two guys that you're with
it's right there.
So you're, you're banging each, every, every shot, every hole.
That's, to me, is what reallymakes it fun it does they?
Speaker 9 (49:47):
uh.
We got down to the and reallyyou've got uh on 15.
It's a short par three but ifyou miss the shot, yeah, you're
in the junk and you might betaking trouble.
Yeah and uh.
So we all hit um right on thecenter of the green there, made
par, um and then um al and umrobin got Al and Robin got in a
(50:08):
little trouble on 16.
And I almost missed the greenbut got on to put it for par and
so I got a little bit more roomthere and then hit probably the
best drive of the day on 17.
Because to me that's one of thescariest holes on the golf
course, especially if yourlead's not very big.
(50:28):
You got to put it up over thetrees, you got nowhere to land
it and you got to put thatsecond shot in a good place um
to be able to um to get an easyshot into the green.
Speaker 7 (50:38):
So I was thinking 18
because you got number one.
You got to go over the waterand then you got the water all
the way down the side, on theright side, and that green to me
again I didn't play, but to meit this morning it looks like
it's actually kind of tuckedbehind that was a tough pin
placement today, Al.
Speaker 9 (50:54):
All three got off the
tee box.
Okay, there Al hit his ball alittle bit to the right and he
needed to make birdie here toput the pressure on me because I
had a two-stroke lead.
It was almost an impossibleputt because there was a ridge
and it was a really tough puttto get close, but we ended up.
(51:16):
I ended up coasting in becauseI had that lead.
So I three putted the last twogreens because I really had to
try to make them.
That's right, Two stroke wingy.
Speaker 7 (51:27):
I wanted to make them
.
I saw you collecting some moneyfrom them over there.
I did it with you wherever, which, again, it's always good
as well.
Speaker 9 (51:33):
Always have some good
little fun game that we do on
the side.
So um it's, it's alwayscompetitive and a lot of fun.
So what's next?
Uh, so next when two weeks?
Uh, reunion.
Also, I've got some FSGA eventscoming up, uh, for qualifying
for some FSGA events and likethe senior open and the senior
amateur, but then I think we'reat reunion in two weeks.
(51:56):
I haven't played the Palmercourse, I've played the Watson
course and they're top notchcourses in Orlando.
Speaker 7 (52:02):
Actually it's been a
while since I played down there,
but I love this course.
Speaker 9 (52:05):
I would highly
recommend it.
I, like you, know Terry andMark do such a great job down
here, and one of our favoritecourses is PGA Village in Port
St Lucie.
They always do a great job forus there.
It's really great golfingcourses.
I haven't played Reunion inabout four years, but when I
played it it was beautiful, soI'm looking forward to that.
I know we're claiming PGANational this year, so there's a
(52:28):
lot of great events that arecoming up and I'm looking
forward to coming back out hereand playing with my buddies.
Yeah, it's going to be great.
Now I know I'll be at PGAVillage as well, so I'm looking
forward to going out there withyou guys.
I would say, if anybody listensto this podcast, if you get a
chance to come down to PGAVillage, it is one of the best
golf courses we play Well.
Speaker 7 (52:47):
Dwayne, thanks.
So much, congratulations, andwe'll see you down the road.
All right, thank you.
Welcome back to the Vista Roomat the famed Mission Inn Resort,
here with our B-Flight champion, doug Chapman.
All the way from the MichiganTour, doug, congratulations.
Speaker 2 (53:00):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (53:00):
Welcome to the show.
So you won.
Today you went 80-85, one bythree, over Jeff Kelly on the
Orlando Tour.
Talk a little bit aboutyesterday's round.
We'll talk about the courseslater and see what you think.
Speaker 2 (53:21):
But talk about your
round yesterday and what you did
.
Well Started out driving reallywell all day long, hitting
fairways and hitting greens, which is normal, what you want
to try to do, and so that seemedto be my strong point yesterday
.
Speaker 7 (53:35):
Well, you made a
couple birdies yesterday too, so
you got some skin money.
Speaker 2 (53:39):
I think I got tied.
I don't think I won any skins,I think you got two.
Speaker 7 (53:43):
It's showing two.
No, I'm sorry I can't read.
Jeff won two skins yesterday, see, so maybe we'll give you a
couple of skin money.
You take the win, right?
That's what's most importantanyway, right?
Yes, so today you shot 85.
First thing you said when yousat down you don't want to talk
about your front nine, right, right, it happens.
(54:06):
So you shot 80.
So what happened, seriously, what happened on the front night
today?
Speaker 2 (54:10):
Um, got into trouble
a little bit with some of my
drives.
Got into some areas that was uhwhere you don't want to be, and
uh just couldn't recover verywell.
Speaker 7 (54:19):
So but you went 45,
40, so you, so you did recover
on the what was the key to turnthings around in the back nine
today.
Speaker 2 (54:31):
Sat down, had a talk
with myself, started hitting the
ball back in the fairway.
Speaker 3 (54:34):
Stop doing that.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
Stop.
It Just started hitting morefairways and greens.
The front nine played.
I thought it played tough todaybecause you're so much of the
course is back uphill Right andtrying to judge that which
normally down here in Florida wedon't have that Right.
So just judging the distance isback up there.
Speaker 7 (54:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (54:56):
Getting that right.
Speaker 7 (54:59):
I could see that as I
rode around the course today,
but luckily again, we don't wantpeople to play bad, but Jeff
shot 45 too, so you didn'treally lose any ground.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
No, which kind of
wasn't the case.
All the guys in my group washaving some trouble today in
their front nine.
Speaker 7 (55:14):
Well, you know it's
funny.
You say that because you knowthe champ.
Late winter he came in and hehad seven straight bogeys on the
front, nine, and that'ssomething he said he hasn't done
in forever Seven straightbogeys on the front and then
finish up with four bogeys onthe back.
But out of both courses, whichdid you think was tougher?
Because some guys have saidyeah, she was tougher, some guys
(55:36):
have said today was tougher.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
No, the first course
we played today was easier than
today's course.
So the back nine here resemblesa lot of the other course and
we don't have the hills andwe're back more on flat ground
and stuff.
But the front nine, playingback up into the hills, was
challenging Very.
Speaker 7 (55:59):
So when are you
heading back to Michigan?
Three weeks, three weeks.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
You're going to be
around here for a reunion.
No, I'm playing in a memberguest.
I promised a friend I'd play ina member guest.
Speaker 7 (56:09):
You're around here
for a reunion.
Speaker 2 (56:10):
No, I'm playing on a
member guest.
I promised a friend I'd play ona member guest.
Oh you do.
You're allowed to miss thetournament here and there.
Yeah, I played over inKissimmee.
Okay, and when I come back downnext year I'll make sure I'll
play more of these.
Speaker 7 (56:17):
So what's your
favorite course to play on tour
up in Tuffman, michigan, arcadiaBluffs?
Yeah so, anybody, anybody who'sup that way, that's the course
to not miss.
Speaker 2 (56:28):
It resembles a lot of
.
It's a Scottish-type course,but it plays on Lake Michigan,
so you have all the views ofLake Michigan.
So it's like you're playing onan ocean.
Speaker 7 (56:42):
But you've got to do
it in the summertime, when it
snows.
Oh yeah, so it's summertime, when's the snow?
Speaker 2 (56:46):
going to be gone from
up there it's snowing.
Speaker 7 (56:47):
Oh yeah, so it's snow
, so it's summertime when it's
snowing.
When's the snow going to begone from up?
Speaker 2 (56:50):
there it's gone.
Now they're playing golf.
Speaker 7 (56:54):
Well, I saw.
You know.
The Golf Week tour director, michelle Gillen, posted some
pictures on Facebook last nightand she still had snow, yeah.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
And so I'm saying no,
we April and we're going to
play in Egypt Valley, which isthe senior tour.
We used to play that Okay, upby Grand Rapids Okay, but we
play really nice great courses.
Dennis, that runs our tour upthere.
He does a great job witheverything and I'll give a shout
out to him.
He runs a good program.
Speaker 7 (57:24):
Yeah, I love Dennis
Nault's awesome.
I love him program.
Yeah, I love Dennis Nault, it'sawesome.
I love him Anytime he comesaround.
He's a fun guy to hang out withand talk with, but always hear
good things about histournaments and players love him
.
Dennis, keep it up.
Stop talking to me.
I'm going to get you on thepodcast one of these days.
Speaker 8 (57:41):
Well, Doug, we could
be here for an hour.
Speaker 7 (57:43):
That's okay.
I love it when you talk to him.
You're going to learn something, right, right.
So well, doug, congratulations,it's good to see you.
Yeah, travel safe and we'lltalk to you soon.
Speaker 2 (57:55):
All right Thanks.
Speaker 7 (57:56):
Welcome back to Howie
in the Hills and the famed
Mission Inn Resort.
We've got our sea flightchampion, ted Okowski.
Ted, congratulations on the winthis weekend, bud.
Thank you appreciate it.
So first off, you know, tellingabout your round yesterday.
Speaker 8 (58:15):
Uh, we, we played the
the las colinas course
yesterday and, if you don't know, las colinas means hills.
Yeah, we saw a lot of hills, especially on the green, so yeah
, it was interesting.
I um uh had never played eithercourse before, so it was new to
me.
And luckily, um, a good friendof mine, uh, john, that I was
playing with, knows the coursewell and uh helped me manage the
shots and stuff like that.
And you know us golfers, we allthink that we're pga tour pros
(58:39):
and and you know we should shoota 67 as a timeout and you know
I was disappointed with my round.
Then I looked at theleaderboard and I was like, oh,
not so bad, he's this.
So bad.
Speaker 7 (58:48):
You're only one shot
back, so you weren't out of it.
You were right where you reallyneed to be in the final group,
going into the round today atthe El Campeon, which means the
champion course.
So there we go.
Tell me about that.
Speaker 8 (59:05):
Well, it was a little
tougher today, so the course is
tighter.
The greens were much slower, soit made you think that.
You know, after yesterday Ileft half my first putts short,
but it was super challenging andsuper fun.
I think when we made the turn Ihad like a four-shot lead and
three shots later I was threeshots right.
(59:26):
So you know, luckily I was ableto score well at the end and
come out on top.
Speaker 7 (59:33):
So well, you, you
were paired with, um uh, mike
Sickles today, right, and, andwere you tied with him yesterday
?
Speaker 8 (59:41):
uh, he was one stroke
ahead of me.
Speaker 7 (59:42):
I was yesterday, yeah
, so he was one one stroke up on
it yeah um.
So what was it like going backand forth today?
Speaker 8 (59:48):
it was great.
He's like a really seriousgolfer, you know, and to me golf
should be fun, you know, whether you win, lose or
whatever.
You're outdoors playing out,exactly beautiful.
And, um, you know, I try toshare a little jesus with
everybody when I'm out there onthe course and I'll learn a
little bit about their lives.
And just, I've made so manyfriends on this tour.
(01:00:08):
Probably three of my bestfriends are from the senior tour
.
Speaker 7 (01:00:12):
How awesome is that I
mean that's.
I mean we, we talk about thatall the time, but you know to,
to hear, you know players comeoff off the course and you know,
in a tournament like this, bythe way, it the weather has been
great, and for you to mentionthat again, that just kind of
shows what the tour is reallyall about.
(01:00:32):
Yeah, there's a golf, there's acompetition, but it's about the
camaraderie, it's thefriendships, it's the
relationships that we buildalong the way.
Speaker 8 (01:00:43):
Yeah, and I'm a farm
kid originally from upstate New
York and some of the mostbeautiful scenery and animals
I've ever seen have been on golfcourses.
It's really spectacular.
Speaker 7 (01:00:50):
Yeah, actually
yesterday riding around we saw
some wild turkeys yeah, saw them.
Speaker 8 (01:00:54):
Sandhill cranes
wherever yeah, saw them Tons of
alligators.
Speaker 7 (01:00:57):
I didn't see any
alligators yesterday, but that's
okay, I'm not seeing them.
You know, if they're hiddenI'll be okay.
So you know you want my twostrokes, obviously.
You know you want my twostrokes, obviously.
Again, mike Sickles.
But Jim Siders from theColumbus Ohio tour came in to
play.
I mean, there was people reallyfrom all over the country here.
So Columbus Ohio, no, you'regood, there was somebody from
(01:01:24):
Michigan in the sea flight.
Speaker 8 (01:01:25):
You know, that's the
funny thing is like you play
with these guys and you findthings in common with them.
You know the guy the guy yousaid from Columbus Ohio actually
lives in Alba, florida, where Iwent to high school and Jim
actually has a house in CapeCoral where I grew up.
How about that?
Speaker 7 (01:01:42):
Yeah, that's awesome.
So you know what would you tellpeople who chose not to come
here this weekend if we do itagain next year?
Speaker 8 (01:01:50):
It's just really a
fabulous golf course.
Both golf courses are fabulous.
The first one has, like reallyfast greens.
The second one is reallychallenging.
It's super fun.
If you love, you know this isthe best time of year to play.
It's not too cold, it's not toohot, it's not too humid and not
(01:02:10):
too windy.
Speaker 7 (01:02:12):
So, chris, did you
hear that the weather was
actually perfect?
And Ted's right, it wasn't hot,it wasn't cold.
I mean, the weather was perfect, really, no wind to speak of.
It may have been a little bityesterday, but today it was
great.
Come on down Next year, don'tmiss us Next year.
Make sure you're here.
(01:02:33):
But, ted, thank you so much forjoining us.
Congratulations, and what'snext for you?
What's your next tournament?
Speaker 8 (01:02:38):
Oh, I don't know.
I'm going to take about sixweeks off now and try to spend
all this money that Harry gaveme Go on vacation, right
Probably going to Hawaii.
Speaker 9 (01:02:46):
All right, bud Again.
Go on vacation, right Probablygoing for a while.
Speaker 7 (01:02:48):
All right, bud.
Again congratulations, takecare and we'll see you down the
road.
Thank you, bye, bud, bye.
Welcome back to the Vista Roomat the Fain Mission Inn Resort.
We've got our final champion ofthe weekend from the D-Flight,
dave Kubik.
From the Augusta Tour, david, congratulations on the win, bud.
Speaker 5 (01:03:05):
Thank you, sir.
Uh, it was a tight battle on.
I was quite a bit, quite a bitbehind for when we first teed
off, but slowly creeped my wayin, didn't make much progress on
the front nine on gainingground, but the back nine couple
holes, and then it was just uh,it was just a dog fighting and
we just had a blast doing it,though yeah, well, that's,
that's good to hear, becauseagain you know so.
Speaker 7 (01:03:24):
so, uh, you uh beat
shep by one stroke.
Yes, sir, sir, and after thenine today the lead was the same
.
So he was ahead by seven, eight, nine.
Yeah, seven, eight, nine, tenstrokes, something like that,
and you closed that gap all theway up.
Speaker 5 (01:03:42):
Yeah, we both had
some good holes on the back, we
both had some bad holes.
And then, when we got to 18, um, you know you, you do your
pre-shot routine.
And I thought, well, I know I'mstill behind somewhere and you
know, all I can do is um, putthe best tee shot I can out
there.
And uh, she played beautifuland then hit a five.
(01:04:04):
I can two-putt from here.
I missed four buries today.
Oh wow, and I turned around andI told my playing partner.
I said you know, this will notgo in, it's impossible.
I had made a burry all day, butit was nice.
I made the two putts and thenShep doubled.
So it was an Aunt Jemima flip.
Speaker 7 (01:04:20):
I had me by the rope.
Yeah Well, you know I wastalking to another one of the
winners Hole 18 to me and Ididn't play, but I rode the
course.
Hole 18 to me seemed to be likeone of the toughest courses,
toughest holes, because you gotto carry the water.
You got water all the way downthe right side and then the
green seemed to be tucked backbehind the water.
So if you didn't make a par, that's a pretty good hole.
Speaker 5 (01:04:43):
Yeah, I was really
happy with it.
So it was the hardest.
Today, for some reason, therewas a part three where the water
is short of it's all water infront of it.
I can't remember the hole andthe green was so fast I hit a
flop shot, put it on the greenand it rolls all the way down,
rolled back off the water, so Ichip it out to the side, put it
back up on the green and itrolled all the way back to the
(01:05:04):
water to triple on it and I waslike, well, I had fun with it
and the holes were beautiful.
That was a nice thing.
Every hole was so pretty, youcouldn't help but stay positive.
Speaker 7 (01:05:13):
Talk about your round
yesterday.
Speaker 5 (01:05:20):
And which course did
you think was harder?
The other one or this one?
I never really look at a courseas like one being harder than
another.
I always look at it as whichone was I better mentally
prepared for?
Okay, and I was better mentallyprepared for today's course
because the folks around thathave played it and hadn't played
it before told me that it'sharder.
So I was ready to hit differentclubs.
Okay, I was ready to hit them, but both courses were just a
(01:05:40):
blast to play, yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:05:43):
Well, that's good to
hear.
I'm glad you had fun.
So you know, today, 48-45 for93.
That's a pretty good score.
Yeah, I'm happy with it.
Speaker 5 (01:05:53):
As long as I don't
have to be a triple-digit midget
, I'm a happy kink.
That's my joke to myself.
It's like, hey, 99 is nottriple digits, so as long as I
can stay out of it, you know,I'd love to.
Speaker 7 (01:06:06):
Well, you had two
good rounds Shot 95 yesterday,
93 today.
Yep, that's solid, that's good.
Deflate scores, that's old mangame, that's all right, we'll
take what you can get right.
Speaker 5 (01:06:15):
I'll take it.
I'll take it.
I'm in the right flight.
Speaker 7 (01:06:17):
I get to play with a
bunch of great guys so I'll take
it so the real what are yougoing to say to your brother?
Because I don't know, I don'tknow when the last?
Speaker 5 (01:06:27):
time he's won a
regional.
Yeah, I do have two youngerbrothers that play on the tour
and, of course, steve's the tourdirector up in Augusta.
So the only thing I'm going totell both of them is you know,
we're still going to thenationals together.
Just, you guys haven'tqualified yet, and I did.
I won one tournament last yearand it was the Paulie's Island
regional.
Okay, oh, wow.
So I'm still going to go backand play that, even though I won
(01:06:48):
here.
I'm going to go back and playbecause, defending it, right,
right, you know I'm probablygoing to get my butt handed to
me, but I had so much fun it'slike this course, it was just so
much fun to play.
You can't help but play, yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 7 (01:07:05):
Yeah, I'm going.
I know it's going to botherSteve a little bit.
You know we had him on thepodcast this last episode and
he's a I love him, oh, he'sloving to death.
I mean you have to say itbecause he's your brother, but I
mean he's, oh, he's solid solid.
Speaker 5 (01:07:18):
Solid, I mean, he'll
go out of his way to help
anybody.
He's such a nice person he'sway nicer than I am, but I'm
already going to nationals andhe's now who he's got to work to
cut in.
So, steve, yeah, I think yougot work to do.
Speaker 7 (01:07:30):
Sorry, man, get after
it, right, you know well.
Congratulations, it was goodseeing you and we'll see you
down the road.
Super, thank you, bye, bye, bye.
Let's take a break from theshow to hear about Strixon's ZX
Mark II drivers.
Speaker 10 (01:07:43):
ZX Mark II drivers
are for major players, major
winners, major power.
Speaker 7 (01:07:57):
All new ZX Mark II
drivers only from Srixon.
Chris, you know.
Again, interviewing the winnerswas a lot of fun.
We've got David Kubik, theD-Flight winner.
That's Steve's brother and theAugusta Tour Director and as
soon as he got done theinterview he called him.
He actually has another brotherwho plays as well, called him
(01:08:19):
and kind of gave him shitbecause so far he's the only one
that's qualified for nationalsand he's apparently the oldest
of the brothers.
Speaker 5 (01:08:33):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (01:08:35):
So that was a lot of
fun.
And another really good storythat came out of this the champ
flight winner, Dave Rummels.
I don't know if that name ringsa bell, Dave Rummels.
Speaker 1 (01:08:49):
No, it doesn't.
Speaker 7 (01:08:51):
He is a former PGA
pro.
Okay, played in the Masters.
Played in Miss.
Opens Played in PGA Championship.
Yeah, I think he said he was 72, 73 years old, hasn't played
golf in.
I think he said 16 years, 72,73 years old, hasn't played golf
in.
I think he said 16 years.
(01:09:11):
Wow, and just got his amateurstatus back and I told him you
know, at some point this year wewant to have him on for a more
formal interview.
Have him on, just you know.
Again, for me it's like I wantto hear some stories, you know.
I want to hear what it was like, you know.
You know, if we look back tosome of the episodes that we've
done, you know, one of our mostdownloaded episodes was the one
(01:09:38):
we did with Gaines Beard lastyear.
Yep, and they're I guessthey're probably close in age
and I don't know the specificsof Dave and what he played, but
it'd be really interesting tosee what his experiences are or
were in comparing them to Gaines.
(01:09:59):
You know, where Gaines wasdoing many tours and qualifying
each week and were trying toqualify each week, uh, uh,
against somebody who uh, youknow who qualified for the
masters, qualified for the U Sopen, qualified for the PGA uh
(01:10:20):
championship and those types ofthings.
Uh yeah, I just can't wait tohear some stories.
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:10:25):
It's it's, it's, it's
really uh cool stories to um.
It's like one of those, one ofthose episodes where you can
just sit on just chit chat andjust exactly what, what he's,
what he's saying and what whathe's been through.
Because I mean, you and me canimagine how it is to go to these
events as spectators or patrons, okay, but uh, being able to
(01:10:51):
qualify and play and and beinside the ropes is a whole
different thing.
Speaker 7 (01:10:54):
Whole different thing
.
Yeah, exactly so.
But again, I really, reallyenjoy interviewing seniors.
It was a lot of fun.
Uh, michigan again beautifulplace.
If we go back next year andyou're on the senior tour, you
don't want to miss it, youreally don't.
Terry Mark did a great job andI can't wait to do their
(01:11:21):
regional, their Golf Weekregional, coming up here on
Monday weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
Nice.
You know it's going to be funto start to incorporate them in
our podcast, the Senior Tour, because they deserve just as
much recognition as the GolfWeek, exactly.
Speaker 7 (01:11:43):
So you're not a
senior yet, but let's hear about
your.
My experience with what hearabout your, your, my experience
with what?
With, with playing golf, man, Imean, I'm not seeing your name
on leaderboards and I don't, Idon't, I don't even know what's
going on with you anymore, youknow it's, it's, I don't know
it's.
Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
It's been interesting
, an interesting first couple of
events.
I mean, the first event, I gotthird place.
Next event, I think I got thirdor fourth, and then it just
kind of Hit a brick wall.
I'm not hitting any greens Inregulation anymore, which is
causing me to have to chip andtwo putt for bogeys.
(01:12:26):
I've seen more bogeys Than I'veseen in my life.
I want to say the last eventwas because I was sick and
wasn't able to play, but I don'twant to use that excuse.
You know for far too long.
So I don't know.
It's been tough, but everyone'sbeen giving me encouragement to
(01:12:51):
keep trying and keep going atit.
So what do?
Speaker 7 (01:12:54):
you say.
I want to hear the actualencouragement that Jordan's
given you.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Oh, jordan's asking
me to move back down because he
wants more money in the pot.
A lot of B-fighters want me tomove back down, but no, I've
committed to this.
I don't think I'm going to movedown all year.
If and it's a big if I decideto, it'll be right before the
cutoff so I can at least try anddo nationals in beef flight.
(01:13:21):
But again, that's a big if andI don't want to hear from you
because I already know whatyou're going to say.
But I don't think I know.
I don't want to hear from youbecause I already know what
you're going to say.
Um, but uh, I don't think it'sgoing to happen.
I think I'm just going to stickit out and, you know, tend to
the wounds for the first yearand and hopefully spark
something in the next couple ofweeks before I head to Ohio.
Speaker 7 (01:13:43):
Dude, it's March.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
I mean, I know and,
and, and I've looked at all my
scores in the past and um thefirst three, four months of the
year, I tend to struggle umuntil I can uh, I don't know
until the weather gets warmer, until it gets too hot to play
golf, right, right, and thennobody wants to play and I'm
(01:14:07):
cool as a cucumber.
See, that's awesome.
Speaker 7 (01:14:09):
Well, again wants to
play, and I'm cool as a cucumber
.
See, that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
Well again.
Speaker 7 (01:14:12):
I look at it like
this man it's March, you're
playing in competing distancesthat you're not used to.
Right it is, and you have toremember your handicap is your
handicap and you've got tofigure out a way to play your
game to get better scores.
(01:14:33):
Right, because just becauseyou're playing back for doesn't
mean you swing harder on yourdriver.
Right, it doesn't necessarilymean that you do anything too
drastically different, but getbetter at the, at the piece that
you can get better at to get abetter score.
Speaker 1 (01:14:52):
Right, right, and I
think that's I'm starting to see
that um, and just trying toplay smarter around the course.
Uh, I, just I got to hit some, some more greens and regulation
and give myself a chance for atleast a birdie putt or or a par
(01:15:17):
putt.
Um, if not, work on thechipping game to get that thing
dialed in, uh, to then do getone putts.
But, um, it's a work inprogress.
I am learning a lot aboutmyself and about the game and,
um, I, I see myself up there onthe top of the leaderboard
pretty soon, especially with theevents we got.
We got lined up for my tour,Some of the some of the better
courses I enjoy playing.
So, if I can, if I can have agood round and enjoy the time
(01:15:38):
that I'm having.
I think the score will show, itwill I, I, I agree.
Speaker 7 (01:15:43):
It will.
So anyway it you'll get there.
And so anyway it you'll getthere.
And you know, we're notcomplaining this one, the
allergies, or the, or thesandstorms or any of this other
stuff, you'll be just fine.
Speaker 1 (01:15:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:15:58):
Plenty, plenty of
time left.
So yeah, Although we saidthere's plenty of time left,
there's not a whole lot of timeleft to get your nomination
toward rushers, not enough, nota lot of time.
To get your nominations in forPlayer of the Month for the
month of March, you have untilthe 5th of April, that's, I
believe, this coming Saturday.
Yeah, I believe.
Speaker 1 (01:16:19):
Saturday is when
we're having an event.
Speaker 7 (01:16:22):
So get them in I
think we already have four or
five at least and remember howthis is going to go.
We're going to take allidentifying information off,
we're going to send it over toour president, dennis McCormick,
and he's going to choose.
And from there, chris, we'llsee if he can come on and
announce it live.
Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
Yeah, hopefully
That'd be cool.
Speaker 7 (01:16:45):
And if not, again,
because I mean getting into into
it too much, but things they'restill running back and forth
Right and and and that obviouslytakes precedent over a lot of
other things.
Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
So Right, right, I
mean, it's a, you know, it's
life, life happens so Exactly,exactly.
Speaker 7 (01:17:06):
And then we got the
the uh, the, the iron raffle.
Make sure you know you can.
Venmo me it's at TimNATC andall this will be in show notes
and grab a chance to win a setof.
Grab a chance to win a set ofSrixon irons.
(01:17:27):
Yes, definitely get in there, because chance to win a set of
Srixon irons.
Speaker 1 (01:17:31):
Yes, definitely get
in there, because I bet you you
waste $10 on a cup of coffeefrom Starbucks.
Why?
Speaker 7 (01:17:42):
not skip that cup
First off, if you're going to
Starbucks and spend that much oncoffee, call me.
Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
Starbucks is
expensive, man.
Speaker 7 (01:17:54):
It is, see, maybe
it's me, which I doubt, but it
could be.
I'm okay if it is.
But you know, way back when Iwas growing up, we would go to
7-Eleven, right See, and getcoffee, for it was like 80 cents
(01:18:20):
a buck, 80 cents a dollar maybe.
And I remember and this wasback before coffee was cool,
right Before it was cool todrink coffee People would say I
can't believe you're going andbuying coffee from 7-Eleven.
Speaker 1 (01:18:38):
I still can't believe
you're going and buying coffee
from 7-Eleven.
Speaker 7 (01:18:41):
Oh, dude, you don't
even want to know what we were
buying from 7-Eleven.
You don't even want to know.
Okay, so I'm not, I'm not, I'mnot saying it was me, I wasn't
even there, um, but at two orthree o'clock in the morning,
seven, 11, we should, weshouldn't be at seven, 11, two
(01:19:03):
or three o'clock in the morning.
You're, you've made bad lifechoices.
No, you're, you've made badlife choices uh yeah, no see I'm
a stripper for coffee.
Speaker 1 (01:19:13):
If you don't have
good coffee, I'll never go back
to your establishment again.
Speaker 7 (01:19:17):
No, is that I mean
that?
Okay, I think about if it's forbreakfast but you, yeah, but
you don't have to spend sevendollars for a coffee dude to get
a good cup of coffee.
Speaker 1 (01:19:29):
No, no, you're right,
I don't spend $7 for a good.
I'm just saying you know, cut afast food meal out of your week
and put it towards apossibility for a new set of
clubs.
Speaker 7 (01:19:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:19:43):
Not a bad option.
Speaker 7 (01:19:47):
Exactly I agree with
Chris.
Did you hear that?
Write that down.
Speaker 1 (01:19:53):
Mark it down.
Speaker 7 (01:19:56):
Oh boy, Dude, I miss
you.

Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
It's not, but take it
day by day, man.
Speaker 7 (01:20:12):
Let me ask you a
question, okay, and I know

about it Are you just doing thisto get out of housework?
Speaker 1 (01:20:22):
