(00:00):
I'm Steve Rode and you're still not, but this is good morning
Wake County. So there's an Olympic skiing
legend who just gained 12 lbs onpurpose.
Doctor said her knee was done but she's proven them wrong at
40. Also.
Hey, Santa is setting up on a rooftop downtown with the
(00:21):
Raleigh skyline as your backdrop.
Handel's Messiah is coming to carry with 70 voices and wait
for it, an army of tubas is about to play Jingle Bells in
Apex. If this won't get you in a
holiday mood, I don't know what will.
Hey, stick around. I got a dad joke for you at the
end. That's marginally OK, but it's
(00:45):
still safe for the kiddos in thecars, OK?
Right now, Olympic skiing legendLindsey Vonn is 12 lbs.
Heavier than she was a few months ago, and she's
celebrating it. After winning 3 Olympic medals
and 82 World Cup races, Von retired in 2019 when her knees
gave out multiple surgeries. Doctors told her competitive
(01:08):
skiing was over. That was it.
Most athletes would have just accepted that.
But at 40 years old, she set a goal that seemed impossible.
Add 12 lbs of lean muscle, get stronger than she's ever been,
and return to competitive skiingfor the 2026 Olympics in Milan
Cortina. The gym sessions were not
(01:31):
casual. Kettlebell oblique crunches,
partner wall throws, single leg squats, hip thrusts.
She did it all. And she just announced she's
officially hit her goal at 40, when most athletes are long
retired. That's not just physical
training, that's commitment, that's refusing to give up.
(01:56):
And that is something we can allaspire to.
Bond's comeback attempts starts this winter.
She's already back in the gates.Training with Team USA and the
2026 Olympics are insight. You got to love seeing somebody
who knows they can do it. They can do more.
All right? So hey, if you need holiday
(02:16):
photos but the mall Santa line is like a nightmare.
Way too long. Wake County's got you covered.
There's going to be a Santa on arooftop in downtown Raleigh with
the city skyline right there behind you.
How cool is that? Saturday, December 7th from 1:00
to 3:00 PM, head up to the Willard Rooftop downtown.
(02:41):
Totally free. Bring your own camera or phone,
snap your shots, chat with Santa, and you got a backdrop
that is beautiful and award-winning.
That'll be a holiday card photo.People will actually notice.
But if you're into more traditional holiday vibes, like
really traditional, the Cary Community Choir has something
(03:05):
for you. 70 Voices will fill Westwood Baptist Church with
Handel's Messiah on Saturday, December 7th.
It's one of those performances that's been happening for years
in Cary, and people keep coming back because it just sounds like
the holidays should sound. It's free, but you'll need to
(03:27):
grab a reservation ahead of time.
The acoustics in that space, theharmonies, wow, they're just
incredible. It's the kind of thing that
makes you put your phone down and just listen.
If you've never heard the Handel's Messiah perform live,
well, this is a great way to experience it.
It is a great December tradition.
(03:50):
And Speaking of holiday traditions, things are a little
different in Apex because they're about to have an army of
tubas. Tuba Christmas is happening
Saturday, December 21st. It's exactly what it sounds
like. Tuba players and baritone horn
players from all over are gathering together to belt out
(04:12):
Christmas carols their own Oompaway.
When else are you going to hear Jingle Bells play by 30 tube as
at once? I mean, look, it's quirky, it's
festive, and honestly, the deep brass sound of a full tube of
choir is kind of amazing. Do you want holiday music with a
little more bottom end? Apex has your bottom end cover.
(04:38):
All right, That dad joke I promised you is still coming up,
