Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Good Neighbor podcast, the place
where local businesses andneighbors come together.
Here's your host, Jim Schaller.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Welcome Good Neighbors to episode number 60
of the Good Neighbor podcastAstero.
Today we have Good NeighborGretchen Caudill from the
Artificial Turf Factory outletin Naples.
Gretchen welcome.
Hi Pleasure to get to know youthis morning, and why don't we
just jump right in and share alittle bit about what you guys

(00:32):
do over there?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
All right.
Well, we are the localdistributor and installer of
Artificial Turf.
We have a full showroom down onJ&C Boulevard and you can come
in and see all their turf thatwe have available.
We do installs and sell to thepublic, homeowners and

(00:53):
contractors alike.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Very nice, very nice, and it's becoming a very, it's
becoming a bigger industry.
Now, right, people don't wantto be mowing their lawn, or?

Speaker 3 (01:01):
anything.
Yes, it's huge and you know itis pricey up front, but you know
it pays for itself within youknow, a year or two because of
maintenance and you know timeand grass clippings in your pool
and mud in your floors, youknow.

(01:21):
So it's great, you know, and itlooks beautiful, stays perfect
all year.
You know it's Florida, we can'tgrow grass.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Right, or good grass anyways.
Right, I'm from up north and wehad that fine grass up there I
had.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Kentucky bluegrass, so I hate Florida grass.
It's terrible.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
So, yeah, it's heavy, I know it's, I don't.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I don't like it either and I don't like either.
And we have, you know, likenine different styles, so you
know you can choose for anyapplications.
It's great for pets, it's greatfor kids.
You know, we can even doputting greens in your backyard.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
All different styles of grass.
So how does that work?
For I mean, obviously you havea system involved, but as far as
maintenance or drainage, howdoes that work?

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Okay, so we remove, you know, two to three inches of
you know grass, sand, whatever's there, and then we
put in crushed concreteunderneath and that gets
compacted down and then the turfwe actually install with
composite borders.
A lot of companies use variousdifferent things and up north
that works fine, like pinning or, you know, metal edging, but in

(02:35):
Florida that just doesn't work.
You know, it rusts lumber rots.
You know pinning, we have sand,so it's going to shift.
So we insist that ourinstallers use composite borders
and the turf gets stretchedover the top and stapled to it
so you don't actually see theborders but that's going to hold
your base material in place soyou get a good 15 years out of

(02:57):
your turf.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Is that the normal lifespan for turf?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Well, not exactly.
It depends on the quality ofthe turf.
If, like ours, is triplelayered backing it's double
polypropylene and polyurethaneand as long as you have that,
then, yes, you will get thelongevity out of your turf.
If it's a single layer backing, you're going to get two to
three years before it starts tocrack, maybe five, but then your

(03:26):
backing will start to crack andthat's just not good.
When you spend that much money, you want it to last.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, absolutely, and then is that more because of
the Florida environment ortraffic.
Traffic probably plays a big,big role in this Traffic?

Speaker 3 (03:40):
yes, and our environment is very harsh.
You know salt heat, you know itall.
It all causes issues.
So you want a good backing, youwant good stitching, and you'll
get that with our product.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
So there's other, certain applications that work
better than others.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
What do you mean?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
As far as putting an artificial turf in other certain
situations where, yes, that'sgreat and maybe that's not a
great idea.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Not necessarily, unless you've got a real steep
hill, which in Florida is notreally a thing.
But there's ways to get aroundthat.
If you do have a major hill, wecan use what's called ground
grid and that it's like anaccordion.
It goes underneath your turfand holds your base in little

(04:35):
pockets.
Basically that keeps everythingfrom sliding off the hill.
But it works great for pools,we can do strips between pavers,
dogs we've done dog parks anddog resorts.
So yeah, I mean it's great forpretty much whatever.

(04:57):
If you have standing waterissues, maybe not so great, but
again, there's sometimes waysaround that we can put more base
material down and raise it upso you don't have a puddle
underneath it.
But that's the purpose ofputting the crushed concrete
underneath.
That is for drainage.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Got it.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
It will drain like real dirt, as long as you put
your base material underneathproperly.
So yeah, I mean it worksfantastic.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Are you seeing any trends within the industry as
far as movement towards acertain type of turf or
situations?

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Well, the canine grasses are extremely popular.
Even if you don't have dogs, the canine one.
It has antimicrobial in it, soit's great for playgrounds,
keeps bacteria off the kid'sfeet.
So that's a number one selleris the canine one.

(06:02):
Then we have the Imperial Prime, which is a little bit taller.
It looks beautiful and it'sjust a great great turf.
Some of our taller grasses, those are great for like front
yards where it's not super hightraffic.
It's a real high traffic area.
You want to go with one of theshorter turfs, like the canine

(06:25):
grasses, and we do have a turfthat looks like Florida grass.
It looks like that floor damn.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
That'd be Atlantic right.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Well, if you want it to look natural, that's the way
to go is the Premier, so we havea variety to choose from.
So if you want that artificiallook, we have some brighter
greens Some people they want itto be artificial and they want
it to look artificial.
So we have a pair of those thatare real bright green and they

(06:59):
look fantastic installed.
We just did a dog park, actually in Estero so and it
looks great.
Then we do have the darkergreens with the brown thatch, so
it gives you that artificial, natural look, I'm sorry.
So lots to choose from.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Lots of varieties.
That is awesome.
I love it.
So I have to ask how did youget involved in this industry?
Well, I.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
I was looking for a receptionist job or you know,
and uh happened to fall intothis.
I was actually looking for ajob at a vets office and came
across this one and it just kindof fell on my lap.
So I took it and now I've movedup in the company and I'm
running the office and doing theuh estimates for installs.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Wow See, yeah, it worked out great, that is great.
That is great it worked outgreat.
So how long have you guys beenaround again?

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Okay, so we opened this location in June of 2022.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
We have a location in Orlando it's been here longer
and then our headquarters isactually turf froze solutions in
Colorado and they've beenaround for a while.
Um, so we actually havemultiple headings.
We have turf froze solutions inColorado, in Denver, colorado
Springs and Denver and then wehave us artificial grass we just

(08:26):
opened in Chicago and SanAntonio, and we have artificial
grass turf warehouse in NewJersey and then our two Florida
locations, in Orlando, which isartificial turf factory outlet.
That's me Very nice, very.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
I guess I was.
How would you guys stand out orcompare how you different from
from other solutions out there?

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Well, um, we, we give a one year installation
warranty so we get you throughrainy season, make sure you
don't have any dipping orsettling.
We have the triple layerbacking, which is very important
, and we install with compositeborders.
You know that's we give you thebest bang for your book, I
guess is the way to say it.
You know we probably should becharging $15 to $20 a square

(09:09):
foot for what we offer.
You know the quality of ourproduct, but I try to keep us in
the 10 to $12 range, 15 forputting green.
So I'm not the cheapest, butI'm not the most expensive by
far.
But I give you the best qualityfor what you're getting.
So you know you get what youpay for it and that definitely
qualifies it for turf as well.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
So yeah, and then you fit your lawn or something
you're going to be looking at,using every day.
You want to make sure you'regoing with it, right?

Speaker 3 (09:36):
You know, and you know if you got dogs you don't
want them to, you know, rip itup or tear it up immediately,
Cause I've seen that happen andthings.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
What are you talking about, right yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:47):
So you know, I want to get you the best quality for
the best quality For the bestprice.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
I love it.
I love it, so I know your jobis very demanding you got a lot
of hats that are going on.
What do you do outside of work?

Speaker 3 (10:02):
I play with my critters and I read a lot.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
See, gotta detach a little bit right.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
I'm super boring actually.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
I rest a lot.
Oh, you do See, that's cute, Ido.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Yeah, I know I'm from Illinois originally, but I've
been down here 26 years.
What?

Speaker 2 (10:21):
brought you down here .

Speaker 3 (10:24):
My parents decided to sell our jewelry store and they
said Florida or Arizona.
I said Hot or hotter, let's gowith Florida.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
So you don't want.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
To cook my dinner on the hood of my car, because it's
120 degrees outside and I don'tcare how dry the heat is, it's
still 120.
I'm with you.
I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Humidity is better for you anyway.
It's better for your skin.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
That's what they say.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
So is there?
Is there one thing maybe aboutwhat you guys do that maybe our
listeners don't know that theyshould know?

Speaker 3 (11:01):

think of anything.

great for the environmentbecause you're not having to
spray chemicals and, you know,do all that you get to enjoy the
