Ever wonder what happens when life throws you a curveball and medical bills start piling up? Christina Solis, an independent AFLAC agent, joins the Good Neighbor Podcast to reveal how supplemental insurance offers a financial safety net most people don't know exists.

Christina breaks down the crucial difference between traditional and supplemental insurance: while companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield pay doctors and hospitals directly, AFLAC puts cash directly in policyholders' hands. This distinction means you decide how to use those funds – whether for medical expenses, mortgage payments, groceries, or childcare – because regular bills don't stop when illness or injury strikes.

Drawing from over three decades in hospitality, Christina brings authentic customer service to her insurance career. Her transition wasn't planned – after witnessing friends struggle financially following injuries, AFLAC "fell into her lap" through a recruiting officer's text. A personal connection solidified her decision, as she remembered how AFLAC benefits had helped her brother-in-law's family pay bills for three months after a workplace injury.

Christina dispels common misconceptions, particularly that you must already have insurance to qualify for AFLAC coverage. While supplemental insurance works optimally alongside major medical plans, it still provides valuable protection for those without traditional coverage. Her marketing approach balances modern social media with old-fashioned networking, targeting anyone interested in improving their financial, physical, or mental wellness.

What truly distinguishes Christina is her commitment to authenticity: "I'm not here just to make numbers and hit quotas – I'm actually here to help. I'm not trying to sell you something you don't need." Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place
where local businesses andneighbors come together.
Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast.
Are you in need of anindependent AFLAC insurance
agent?
Well, one may be closer thanyou think.
Today I have the pleasure ofintroducing your good neighbor,
christina Solis, an independentAffleck agent.
Christina, how are you today?
I am great.
Thank you so much for having meGreat.
Well, it is a pleasure to haveyou on and we are so excited to

(00:34):
learn all about you and yourbusiness.
Can you start by telling ourlisteners a little bit about
your company?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
So I'm an independent agent, which just means I'm my
own business, and we're a littlebit different than what people
normally think of.
When they think of insurance, they automatically think of
traditional insurance, which iswhat most people think of Blue
Cross, blue Shield, aetna, united major name brands.
We're supplemental insurance, which is a little bit different.

(01:02):
We give cash benefits directlyto our policyholders.
So instead of your traditionalinsurance, who pays doctors and
hospitals directly to pay yourdoctor bills, we are actually
paying you cash.
So you can choose what you wantto do with that money.
You can pay to offset thoseout-of-pocket expenses for
deductibles and co-insurance andco-pays, or you can choose to

(01:25):
pay those bills that keep comingin every month.
That's not going to stopbecause you have gotten into an
accident or injury or sicknessor hospitalization, and you can
still pay for your bills andgroceries and childcare, and the
list goes on and on.
So I think that we're unique inthat way and that's why I pride
myself as being an Aflac agent.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Amazing.
And how did you originally getinto this business, Christina?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
To be honest, it fell into my lap.
I was in the industry, in thehospitality industry, for 30
plus years.
I was a server, a server, I wasa bartender.
I was actually a restaurantowner myself for three years and
so I've done customer service, for I have the soft skills that
that I need to be able to talkto people, to be able to relate

(02:14):
to people to, to talk abouttheir problems and and to be
able to find solutions for theirproblems.
To talk about their problemsand to be able to find solutions
for their problems.
I just got really tired ofseeing all of my friends around
me get injured and hurt and notreally having anywhere to go for
those injuries not anythingaffordable really.
And then, just out of despairand desperation, aflac just fell

(02:37):
into my lap.
Despair and desperation.
Aflac just fell into my lap.
A recruiting officer.
Once I got licensed, arecruiting officer texted me and
was like hey, aflac is hiring.
Would you like to come work forus?
And I knew of Aflac because mysister's husband had received
Aflac benefits when he gotinjured at work and they paid

(02:58):
their bills for like threemonths.
And so, yeah, I remember theirstory and I remember that
they're a great company, andthat's what made me want to come
work for them.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Now, what is the most common myth or misconception?
You come across as anindependent Aflac agent.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Most common misconception.
I hear this one a lot Do I have?
Don't I?
Don't I have to have insuranceto get AFLAC?
Don't I already have to haveinsurance to qualify for AFLAC?
You don't have to haveinsurance to qualify for AFLAC.
We do work better for you ifyou have a major medical
insurance, because we want yourbills to get paid.

(03:37):
We want to help you with thatdeductible, but we are
definitely better than nothaving anything at all.
So no, you don't have to haveinsurance to qualify for Aflac.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
And so we know marketing is the heart of every
business.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
How do?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
you currently market your business and who are your
potential clients?

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Right, my personal marketing.
I do a lot of social media.
I do a lot of.
I have my own little businesspage on Facebook it's Trusted
Local Benefits Advisor and thenI do a lot of networking events.
So that's how I like to get myface in front of people.

(04:19):
I do enjoy those a lot becauseI still like organically meeting
people.
Social media is great, but Istill like to be in front of
people and talking to people.
And then my target audience, Ibelieve, is, I think, a lot to
do with wellness.
So, whether it be financialwellness, physical wellness,

(04:40):
mental wellness, anyone thatalso is trying to improve a
well-being or a state of mind, because you know, we're all
trying to better ourselves andI'm trying to help you with
finances.
We're all in this together,we're all a team and I think we
all help each other.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Most definitely Now.
Christina, have you everthought?

Speaker 3 (05:06):
of doing your own podcast.
No, I wouldn't even know whereto start.
