What makes Becca S. Ramirez with Skull Crushers a Good Neighbor?

Have you ever wondered what it takes to transform personal struggles into powerful messages that empower others? Meet Becca S. Ramirez, author of "Skull Crushers: Empowering God's Daughters to Be the Warriors He Created them to Be," who joins us to share her extraordinary journey from casual journaler to purpose-driven author and speaker.

Becca's story unfolds with beautiful authenticity as she recounts her path through nonprofit work, where she discovered her passion for hearing and sharing people's testimonies. Her writing career began almost accidentally, following a divine nudge to publish her thoughts after relocating to Texas. With refreshing vulnerability, she admits launching her first book in 2014 while "having absolutely no idea what I was doing"—a testament to her faith-driven approach to life and work.

The conversation takes a powerful turn when Becca reveals the life-altering car accident that left her daughter with an "internal decapitation"—a typically fatal injury. This miracle story, which will appear in her upcoming collaborative book "Miracles Still Happen," became a cornerstone of her ministry and deepened her conviction about God's presence through life's darkest moments. Today, her daughter thrives as a high school freshman involved in theater and dance, showing no signs of her near-fatal injury.

What makes Becca's message uniquely compelling is her focus on identity and remembrance. She challenges the notion that faith leaders have all the answers, instead emphasizing continuous growth through intentional study and trusted mentorship. Her mission resonates with anyone seeking to understand their true identity: "I write and speak to encourage people in their identity as children of God and to empower them to live a life that shows it to the world."

Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place
where local businesses andneighbors come together.
Here's your host, Sofia Yvette.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast.
Are you in need of anon-fiction, purpose-driven
author and speaker?
Well, one may be closer thanyou think.
Today I have the pleasure ofintroducing your good neighbor,
beca S Ramirez, author andspeaker of School Crushers.
Becca, how are you today?
I'm doing well, sophia.

(00:31):
Thank you so much for having meon.
Yes, and we are so excited tolearn all about you and your new
book.
Can you start by telling ourlisteners a little bit about
your company?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah, absolutely so.
I am a speaker and an author.
My most recent book came outthis actually came out three
years ago is SkullcrushersEmpowering God's Daughters to Be
the Warriors he Created them toBe.
It can be found on Amazon, butI really am focused on
encouraging everyone, but womenin particular, in their identity

(01:08):
as God's daughters andempowering them to live a life
that shows it to the world, andso I do that through both the
writing and speaking.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Wow, now you must have a crazy backstory.
How did you get into thisbusiness?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Well, I kind of stumbled into it, but I have
always been a verbal processor.
It's kind of how I have foundthat I learn best is by kind of
talking things out, which cansometimes drive my husband crazy
.
But within that I've alwaysbeen a journaler as well, and so
as I would study or as I wouldread my Bible, I'm writing out

(01:43):
questions, I'm writing outlittle notes of like oh, this
kind of stood out to me, Iwonder where else I can find
this, and starting to make someof those connections.
And so I had been kind ofcasually just writing on my own
for years and years.
I started off in the nonprofitworld.
I worked for an organizationthat found short term mission

(02:05):
opportunities for people to goover and to support Bible
translators.
So it was things like teachers,it was things like construction
, it was things likeadministrative work, and part of
that job was to listen to theirstories, to hear their
testimonies and to write themout.
And then it transitioned intobeing able to then train them to
go on some of these trips and Ifound a love for it.
I found a love for hearingpeople's stories and for

(02:28):
teaching them how to be equippedto go and share with the area
that they were going into, andso it just kind of built from
there.
And after we moved from Floridato Texas almost 12 years ago,
god just kind of laid in myheart and said you've been
writing this thing, you havethis on your computer.

(02:48):
Find a way to get it published.
And so I did, and I came outwith my first book in 2014.
It was called getting past.
The start I had no idea what Iwas doing like completely full
vulnerability.
I had absolutely no idea what Iwas doing.
I was just trying to beobedient to it.
But I was like I joined theMops Speakers Network, which is

(03:12):
moms of preschoolers, and so Icould be on their website and
people could try to find me.
And I was like, ok, this isgoing to be it.
And we actually ended up in amassive thing that just kind of
flipped our world upside down acouple years later and
everything got put on hold.
And so within that, thatincluded the writing, that
included the speaking.
I was like, ok, maybe I didn'tunderstand this, but it came

(03:35):
back around.
I started writing Skullcrushers.
It took me a couple of years toactually get it written and to
do the research for it.
But then when I launched it, Iwas working at my church and
they opened up opportunity forme to be able to teach on it and
to write content from the bookitself, and so it just kind of

(03:56):
developed from there.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Wow, what a backstory you have Now.
God certainly directs our path, and thank you for sharing that
with our listeners.
Getting into things a bitdeeper, though what is the most
common myth or misconception youcome across in the industry

(04:19):
that you're in?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
So one of the things that is pretty prevalent is that
experts have all the answers.
One of the challenges as anindependent author and as a
lesser known speaker is that yousee a lot of the big names.
You see the people that havethe larger platforms and are

(04:42):
famous for them, and a lot ofthem have done a lot of work to
get there.
It doesn't happen overnight, but the reality is they still
don't have all the answers.
We all have to study, we allhave to research night, but the
reality is they still don't haveall the answers.
We all have to study, we allhave to research, we all are
teaching from our ownexperiences, and so it's not
something that's just a given.
People don't have all theanswers, and so I think we like

(05:04):
to dub ourselves as experts andwe are in certain fields, in
certain formats, but we'reconstantly learning, we're
constantly growing.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
And as somebody who uses faith to guide your path,
what is your compass in?
How you learn, how you grow?
Do you have coaches?
Do you go directly to God?
You know what does that looklike for you.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
It's a little bit of both.
So it's been very intentionalon my time in the Bible and
really researching it.
It's finding sources that Itrust, that I feel really have
gotten to the root of what wordsare.
They aren't just kind ofspouting off their own.
It's like this sounds good, orI'm only working from this one

(05:47):
translation.
You know, when I'm doing myresearch I'm looking at multiple
translations of the Bible tosee how it was translated, to
see how it's reading in thesedifferent formats.
I don't just read one person'scommentary, I read multiple
commentaries and you know, andso it's kind of building that
out.
But I also have some very goodfriends and pastors that I trust

(06:11):
and I trust their background.
I trust their knowledge too.
Like when I have a question, Iwas like, hey, this is kind of
what I'm processing, what isyour experience with this?
Or how do you read this or howdo you understand this?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
To really kind of make it as rounded out as
possible, Well, god certainlyhas interesting ways in
communicating with all of us.
So, becca, we know marketing isthe heart of every business.
How do you currently marketyour business and who is your

(06:41):
target audience?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
So I am primarily on Instagram and Facebook right now
.
I do have a YouTube channel, but it's not super active so you
can find it, but there's not awhole lot on there.
There's a couple speaking umthat had been recorded.
Uh, they aren't the bestquality, but they are there so
you can get a sample of it.
But within that, so I typicallyuse those as my social.

(07:04):
I do have a website.
That's pretty minimal, um, asfar as what you can find on it,
but within all of that, myaudience are individuals who
want to grow in their faith, andso if you are a believer, if
you are a women's group, if youhave a Bible study that you're

(07:24):
leading, those are my people.
They are the ones that I ammost likely to connect with.
They aren't the only ones, butthey are the main ones, and so
within that, that's, you know, like I said, like women's groups
, small groups, if your churchis having like a retreat or
something like that, those arereally the places that I am best

(07:45):
able to serve.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
And have you ever thought about doing your own
podcast?

Speaker 3 (07:52):
I have.
I've considered it.
I've roughly recorded a coupleepisodes and then completely
changed everything that I wasgoing to do for the formatting,
and so everything got put onhold for that.
But it is definitely somethingthat is in the works and should
be around at some point in timein the future.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
So, becca, what is the reason why you do what you
do and what is your goal toaccomplish by, you know,
promoting the word, getting theword out there?
Am I understanding correctlywhat your goal is with your
business?

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Yeah, absolutely so.
I write and I speak to encouragepeople in their identity as
children of God and to empowerthem to live a life that shows
it to the world.
The current season that I'm in,that's been a or I've really
kind of been focusing in onstorytelling, the fact that we
all have a story to share andthat when we are able to look

(08:50):
and remember and see how thehand of God has been in our
lives.
You know, the Bible constantlytells us remember the works I
have done.
You know he's constantlytelling the Israelites to
remember that when he broughtthem out of Egypt, remember when
I brought you through thedesert, remember when I brought
you into the promised land.
You know it's the remember whathe has done.
And so when we're able to dothat, all of a sudden we're able

(09:13):
to remember not only who he isbut whose we are, and that is
our identity.
That is the thing that, nomatter our circumstances, no
matter what's going on around us, that is not going to change.
And so when we can live a lifebased from that point, we're
able to walk confidently, we'reable to walk into the blessings
that he has for us.

(09:33):
And so the things that I'mwriting the things that I speak
on when I'm teaching.
It's all to bring us to thatplace of assurance and hope.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Do you now?
You don't have to go in depthwith this, but do you have your
own testimony yourself as to whyyou believe this so strongly?
I do.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
It's been bits and pieces along the way, and so I
grew up in a Christian home butdidn't always make the best
decisions.
I think it's pretty common formost of us, especially through
the teenage and my college years, I did not make the best
decisions, but one of the thingsthat never faltered for me was

(10:13):
that I always knew that Godloved me.
I always knew that he was thereand that I had not gone too far
from him, and so it reallyencouraged me to.
Once I kind of came back aroundand really ignited my faith and
said, okay, no, this is, I wantto walk this out.
It's not just something Ibelieve, I want it to be really
integral to who I am, and thatit is a lifestyle.

(10:35):
It's not just something that'sin the corner.
But there have been differentseasons where God has just
worked in different ways, and Imentioned, like earlier on, that
after a couple years into aftermy first book was published, my
three kids and I were actuallyin a car accident, and my oldest
daughter ended up with a brokenneck.

(10:58):
The layman's term for her injurywas in internal decapitation,
so she was in a halo vest forsix months and we experienced
the miracles of God that shelived, that she not only
survived but she ended upthriving, that she's still able
to do things and walk, and youwould never know that she was

(11:19):
injured.
She's a freshman in high schoolthis year and does a lot of
theater and acting and dancing, and you would never know.
And so that really opened up myeyes and my heart to recognize
the hand of God and through mylife, and so I wanted to share
that, and actually that storyitself will be in a book that's

(11:39):
coming out on October 14, inpartnership with Hope Books,
called Miracles Still Happen, and so that will be the next
book.
It's a collaboration, so it'smyself and nine other authors,
but and that tells details ofthat story you know for what
that miracle looked like, butit's really set me on that trail
to trust that he's therethrough all of it.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Wow.
Well, you know God bless yourheart for getting you through
that struggle.
You know he, like I said, heworks in mysterious ways.
He does, he does.
