SPEAKER_01 (00:00):
This is the Good
Neighbor Podcast, the place
where local businesses andneighbors come together.
Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
SPEAKER_00 (00:10):
Welcome to the Good
Neighbor Podcast.
Are you in need of a beautyline?
Well, one may be closer than youthink.
Today I have the pleasure ofintroducing your good neighbor,
Jean Quill Guidry, with By JohnQuill Beauty Products.
Jean Quill, how are you today?
SPEAKER_02 (00:26):
I'm wonderful.
How are you, Sophia?
SPEAKER_00 (00:29):
I am doing
wonderful.
Also, now we are excited tolearn all about you and your
business.
Can you start off by telling ourlisteners just a little bit
about your company and your veryunique story?
SPEAKER_02 (00:43):
Okay, wonderful.
Well, by JohnQuil came out of myneed to regrow my hair in the
process of my journey.
Basically, I've written a bookcalled Bear, My Journey from
Owning Ten Properties to BeingHomeless with 10 Bags.
And so out of my story, out ofthe stress of my hardship, I
(01:08):
went into my kitchen and startedcreating products that I needed.
I have always used essentialoils and herbs for probably
three decades now.
So I used the knowledge that Ihad to create a product that
would, or products that wouldhelp me with the loss of my
(01:28):
hair, issues with my skin, aswell as things that might not
taste very good, but they couldbe eaten.
I wanted to make sure I had thevery best holistic natural
products to use on my skin.
And out of necessity, out of alack of resources, I started
(01:49):
creating my own products andstarted giving them to friends
and family to try and test, aswell as for gifts.
SPEAKER_00 (01:58):
Wow.
Now, what is the most commonmyth or misconception you come
across in the beauty industrytoday?
SPEAKER_02 (02:08):
Oh, a myth.
Um it's sad, but some of theproducts that they say are
natural really are not, becausewith some of the chemicals that
they put in them, it takes themfrom their natural state into a
state of being toxic in manycases.
And it's sad that that happens, and we are sometimes misled by
(02:34):
the marketing, the labeling, anddon't realize what we're
actually bringing home andputting on our scalp, which is
also our skin.
SPEAKER_00 (02:46):
Now, Jean Quill,
what are some things to look out
for when it comes to thatlabeling to ensure we're
actually using organic cleanproducts?
SPEAKER_02 (03:00):
Well, some of the,
if you can't say it, chances are
it's not an organic product.
Um, so many times we are misledby very long words and chemicals
and confused by them.
Um, and so many times if it doesnot have uh the natural
(03:22):
ingredients, and especially inmany cases, I find that if it
says shea butter, for instance, that might be the ninth or tenth
ingredient in it.
And there's so many other thingsthat, as I said, you can't even
pronounce before shea butter.
And so um I want to make surethat I stick very closely with
(03:46):
things being organic andnatural, and even if the shelf
life is shorter, I would stillrather have a shorter shelf
life, but know that I'mproviding really good top
quality ingredients for peopleto use.
SPEAKER_00 (04:03):
So, Jean Quill,
switching gears for a second, we
know marketing is the heart ofevery business.
Who are your target customers oraudience?
And in terms of marketing today, how do you stay front and center
in front of them?
SPEAKER_02 (04:21):
Well, right now, um,
my focus is really women because
I created it because I lost hairand I came across um family
members that have lost hair, uh,as well as various different
friends losing hair.
And as women, you know, our hairis our crowning glory.
So that's how this all began.
(04:42):
And when it comes to marketing,I started a YouTube channel
about seven months ago just sothat I can share my spiritual
growth, eating well, just avariety of different things, as
well as you know, seeking peace,self-care, those types of
things.
And so that's where I began.
(05:04):
I'm still in the process ofbuilding and creating, but this
is how I chose to start it andreally through word of mouth.
SPEAKER_00 (05:13):
Now, Jean-Coil, have
you ever thought about doing
your own branded podcast before?
SPEAKER_02 (05:19):
I had thought about
it.
Um, I just hadn't gotten startedwith that yet.
I started with um, I'm older,I'm actually 58 years old.
And so social media is very newto me.
And uh so I'm learning as I go.
And so I had thought about it.
I just wasn't sure the processof getting into podcasts.
(05:43):
So I just started doing videosum on my YouTube.
Sometimes I'm not sure.
I wasn't sure if I was holdingthe camera in the correct
direction or not, but um, I justasked my audience to show me
some grace as I learned in frontof them and shared my journey.
I've even cut my hair um oncamera so that um because I was
(06:08):
a licensed cosmetologist manyyears ago, and so I use that as
a tutorial in case someone needsto cut their own hair, because
with a lack of finances umthrough my journey, that has
definitely been the case in manytimes for many times.
SPEAKER_00 (06:23):
Well, you know what
they say, without no tests,
there is no testimony, right?
SPEAKER_02 (06:28):
So true, so true,
and boy, have I had some tests.
So but I'm very grateful andthankful for them.
SPEAKER_00 (06:35):
Amen to that.
Outside of work, what do you andyour family like to do for fun?
SPEAKER_02 (06:43):
Uh, I enjoy movies,
that's something that my uh sons
and I have three grown sons, andthat's something that we've
always enjoyed is moviestogether.
And so that's uh one of the funthings.
Enjoy bowling.
I'm not very good at it, but Ido like it.
Just a variety of differentthings.
Like I enjoy crafts also.
(07:04):
So, and cooking, that's a bigthing for my family.
We love cooking together.
SPEAKER_00 (07:09):
Amazing, you know.
Growing up, I was always toldcooking and food is a language
of love, right?
SPEAKER_02 (07:15):
So true, so very,
very true.
SPEAKER_00 (07:19):
Now, please tell our
listeners one thing they should
remember about Buy Jean QuillBeauty Products.
SPEAKER_02 (07:26):
Oh, buy Johnquil
beauty products.
Um it was created out of a need,um, and I'm hoping to use it to
assist others who have also hadsome of the same needs that I
have.
I would like to um help otherswho, um, especially divorced
women, divorced moms,especially, create something
(07:51):
that they love as well.
This came out of a need as wellas a love, um, because as we
spoke about cooking in thekitchen, these are things that
I've mixed up in my kitchen.
And um, and it came out of love.
It came out of being able to usethem as gifts as well to help
family and friends.
And so I'd really love to usethis eventually to help others
(08:14):
do the same because it was astruggle for me.
I had to make certain sacrificesjust to get the products needed
to create the products, youknow, get the um raw materials
to create the products.
So I'd really like to use thiseventually to help other
divorced moms, especially, because that's at the core, my
(08:35):
why in everything that I do.
SPEAKER_00 (08:39):
Wow, now that truly
is beautiful.
And five to ten years down theline, where do you see your
product line going or being putup?
SPEAKER_02 (08:52):
Um, hopefully in a
lot of big box stores, uh, so
that uh it can help, you know, others because we don't realize
the things that happen to uswith stress, the loss of hair,
the loss of our crown in glory,um, the aging of our skin, you
know, because stress andcortisol does that.
(09:12):
And so I just really like toeducate.
Um, I've also um started workingon life coaching so that I can
help in the process and haveeverything tied back to helping
my target market, which iswomen, which is, you know,
single moms.
And so I've worked on doing alot of things uh to prepare and
(09:36):
equip myself to help in any waythat I can.
SPEAKER_00 (09:41):
And where can I
listeners go to learn more about
Baijon Quill beauty products?
SPEAKER_02 (09:48):
To my channel, uh 10
Houses to 10 Bags.
I'm going to start speaking moreregarding my products on there.
I've touched on them here andthere in various different
videos, but my channel is called10 Houses to 10 Bags, and that's
um T O in the middle of the 10.
(10:08):
So 10 Houses to 10 Bags is whereyou can go to learn more about
what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_00 (10:15):
