Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is the Good
Neighbor Podcast, where local
businesses and neighbors cometogether.
Here's your host, StaceyPoehler.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hey everybody, I'm
excited to be chatting with
Nancy Massoud from Locked InWellness Welcome.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Nancy, hello, how are
you?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
We're going to talk
about yo-yo dieting, weight
maintenance, how people can getoff this roller coaster of
losing five pounds, gaining fivepounds and all those things.
Do you want to talk about howpeople fall into the cycle of
yo-yo dieting and how people canstart to identify the patterns
in their life?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
the patterns in their
life.
Absolutely, yo-yo dieting is abig deal.
We see clients complain aboutyo-yo dieting.
Range from one year to 50, 60years of their life on some sort
of a diet and yo-yo diet.
It gets really frustrating, ofcourse, at that point and that's
why they reach to us to say, hey, how can we stop the pattern
(01:08):
of yo-yo dieting?
Well, yo-yo diet is really tome.
When somebody comes in and talkabout yo-yo diet I say the first
thing is they're stuck to anumber.
They're looking for a numberthat is driving, telling them
about their health.
They measure their health witha number.
They're looking for a numberthat is driving, telling them
(01:29):
about their health.
They measure their health witha number, not how they're
feeling or if there's anyunderlying condition that needs
to be addressed to help withweight loss.
We start with what causes theweight gain.
When they're yo-yo diet.
They're not looking at thecauses of weight gain.
They're just looking at ashort-term fix to the weight
gain that they have.
So it's not measured throughmuscle.
(01:51):
They're not addressing am Igaining muscle?
Am I losing muscle?
You know fats, you know, yeah, sure, you can lose fats, but
what does that entail?
With quick weight loss.
We tend to lose more muscle ifit's not done properly.
We see that happen becausewe're not treating the issue
(02:12):
that caused the weight gain fromthe beginning.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
How can somebody
shift from short-term let me get
to the right number on thescale mentality to having a
long-term health and wellnessapproach and maybe get to the
root cause of weight gain?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
The best way we can
say for situations like this is
that finding the end of the line.
You know what the pattern?
If someone is on a keto diet, they lose 50 pounds.
They get off the keto diet, they gain 60 pounds.
Well, that's what we consider ayo-yo diet.
So that means, yes, it is ashort-term fix, but for
(02:54):
long-term it's not working.
It's maybe putting morephysical stress on their body or
emotional stress on their body, and it's a rebound, so their
body's rebounding.
So they may be going intoketosis.
Which keto diet is going into?
The goal is to get you intoketosis, but when they come out,
the body doesn't realize thatintroducing carbs back to their
(03:15):
diet causes their body torebound and fat cells to mutate.
The first thing to know is whatfoods trigger weight gain.
We need to go backward to themain component when this person
started to gain weight.
How long ago did that happen?
Finding out if it's related tofood.
(03:36):
Find out it's related to stress.
Is it an emotional eating issue?
Are they craving sugar?
Is it insulin resistance issue?
What, not eating enough?
Okay, some people come in andthey barely eat and they're
gaining weight and they'reconfused why they're gaining
weight if they're not eating.
Your body needs nutrients, sothere could be an issue there.
(03:57):
But find the underlining, thecause of the weight gain first.
Then get them to their goalweight in a healthier pattern.
Making sure that they'regaining muscle because it helps
fat burning.
Making sure that they're losinga visceral fat, reducing
inflammation in the body thatcauses mutation of fat cells.
To start with, finding out whatkind of metabolism they have a
(04:20):
good metabolism that we need towork on.
Enhancing what minerals theirbody is deficient in Sometimes
heavy metals can be acontributor to weight gain.
We're looking at the core issueinside that causes weight gain
and then focusing that back outto the outside body.
So that's the easiest way tomaintain it, because their body
(04:43):
is doing the weight loss in asafe, consistent pattern, not
rebounding and able to maintainthe weight loss.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
We know lots of
people are going on medications
for weight loss.
Can you talk about how that'simpacting the yo-yo dieting and
weight loss and what you canoffer those trying to get off
them?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Correct?
That's a really good questionbecause what we're seeing is
people getting on differentmedications, injections to help
with the weight loss journey.
It's a startup for weight lossbut the problem is, when you're
off of it, how your body's goingto respond to that.
We have seen that people tendto gain the weight back or have
(05:24):
to be consistent or go on to amaintenance phase of the
medication or injection.
If somebody comes in on theshots and they have success, I
still look for the core cause ofthe weight gain.
If I treat that situation, thenwhen they're weaned off the
medication we don't have toworry about rebound or weight
(05:45):
gain.
So they're not yo-yo dietinganymore and we help identify the
issues.
We also focus on muscle becausewe know certain medications and
shots and we have seen thatpeople lose muscle with that as
well.
So they get really fatigued.
They don't feel good.
So what we do with thoseclients?
(06:06):
We help them get their energyback.
We help them build the muscleback, get them all the nutrients
, because they can't really eattoo much.
We push more nutrients backinto their able to help them get
all the nutrients back and helpthem gain strength, power and
(06:27):
energy so that when they aredone taking it.
They don't have to fear dietingagain or gaining weight back.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, In a previous
episode we talked about mineral
testing.
I imagine that when you mineraltest some of these folks, they
probably are missing some keynutrients and minerals and not
impacting them.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Oh, absolutely.
We see that all the time.
Minerals are essential elementsin the body.
We all need nutrients to feelbetter.
When you're lacking certainminerals and certain imbalances,
like we talked about in thepast, makes a big difference.
This is where we start to getall the key elements back into
the body so that they get thestrength and build the essential
(07:10):
elements back and feel better.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
What are some myths
about dieting and weight loss
that you and your team try towalk people through and coach
them so they can have a betterunderstanding and get to a place
of continued health?
Speaker 3 (07:26):
When someone comes in
and says I want to lose 50
pounds, and they are reallyserious, want to start a journey
, they have either somethingthat they want to do or their
doctor has advised them you gotto lose weight to make sure that
you feel better, or their labsare showing some some you know
levels that needs to beaddressed with diet and exercise
(07:49):
.
So the first thing I say we'regoing to work from inside out.
Okay, we're going to look atthe inside, figure out what is
going on, focus on that.
Put you on a plan that helpswith information to your body.
Even though you're not going tobe able to do it, I put them on
some sort of restriction diet.
It's not aggressive.
Most people say this is the mostI've eaten ever.
(08:10):
I never eat that much.
They complain about eating waytoo much, but they're losing
weight.
That's because sometimes yourbody needs more than you think.
When we start to improve yourmetabolism, you have to eat.
We first look at that person'sbody.
Your plan is so unique.
I write a plan based on theirfood sensitivity and not based
(08:34):
on a basic standard weight lossprogram, and it's not a
split-sided kind of plan.
It's more personalized to thatperson and that person's need.
So they present that exerciseseven days a week and they love
their exercise.
They don't want to give it up.
Well, I have to make sure thatthey eat more.
(08:54):
It's also dependent on whattheir food sensitivity looks
like, so that we can reduce theinflammation as much as possible
to help them with their journey.
They feel better, they're morebetter, their energy is better.
That's the first thing.
A lot of clients come in andthey're like oh my God, I lost
(09:15):
so many inches.
It's amazing, I can't believeit.
It's not about energy scale,it's about how you're feeling.
Clients never lie.
We need to make sure they feelbetter in their body.
That's the winning piece ofthis journey.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
What are some of the
strategies you use in your
office to help folks with weightloss?
I know you do some laseracupuncture.
Is that something that can helpsomeone who's on a weight?
Speaker 3 (09:44):
loss journey?
Absolutely.
We have multiple differentlasers.
We have the acupuncture laser, which is sense frequencies to
the body, and we, you know, enhance metabolism.
We also have the lipocontouring lasers.
It helps lose inches.
We apply it in the areas thatthis person would like to lose
more inches, and we do that.
(10:06):
Some people, you know, theyfeel just, they just want to
lose a little inches.
It's not about just a numberscale too.
So they were like, oh, I wish Ican lose, you know, a few
inches here and there.
We have the lipolaser thathelps contour that area and gets
rid of cellulite as well.
We also have a green laser forinflammation, lymphatic as well.
So, and that also, we focus onthe lymphatic system and, of
(10:35):
course, when you get thelymphatic system working, toxins
are coming out and themetabolism is in a better place.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
And what about
alimentation?
Can you talk about the successyou've had with people putting
back minerals and nutrientsthey're missing and how that's
helped their weight loss?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Absolutely.
A lot of clients come in and welook at their mineral tests and
see severe deficiencies.
Or sometimes they're taking somany vitamins that their body
does not need, so it's goinginto a deposit.
If they have a mineraldeficiency, we supplement what
their body needs.
I'm not a person that if aclient comes in and complains of
(11:13):
fatigue, lack of sleep, this orthat, and I put them on 20
different supplements because Idon't really know if he or she
needs all of that.
That's why we do the mineraltest to see what true
supplements this person is goingto need to help them with their
journey.
It may not be just weight loss,it could be anything else, but
(11:35):
we definitely look at that aswell.
The turnaround, you know, whenpeople feel better it's a week
to two weeks.
They see changes right awaywhich motivates them to continue
the journey and focus more ontheir journey of health.
It can go from somebody thatnever had good sleep to, oh my
gosh, I'm sleeping like a baby.
(11:56):
We see people that have hadsevere diarrhea for so long and,
you know, when we've balancedtheir minerals, now they're
actually going normal.
Or the opposite constipation.
They have suffered withconstipation for a very long
time and now they're regular.
It really depends on the person, but we definitely have seen
(12:19):
major changes when we start tobalance those minerals.
The best thing about it theydon't have to be on a lot of
supplements to feel better.
Okay, so that's not about howmany I can add or put someone on
, it's what they need.
That's a big thing for me tomake sure they only take what
they need, not too much.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
What is the role of
their emotional well-being and
mental well-being, and how doyou address that in your office?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Oh yeah, emotional
and physical.
Some people when they'reyo-yoing, it's very emotional.
They feel good, look good, andsuddenly gain 30 pounds in no
time.
They feel good, look good, andsuddenly gain 30 pounds in no
time.
They're not feeling good.
I have so many clients Firsttime they see me they say I feel
good when the scale is down.
Okay, and that's like theresponse to how are you feeling?
(13:09):
Well, it depends on my scale.
Okay, well, that's an emotional.
So then, course, they get, youknow, discouraged by the scale.
So then they jump intoemotional eating because now
it's like, forget it, nothing isworking, so I'm just going to
sit there and eat what I want toeat.
It's not working becausethey're introducing foods that
their body may not be able totolerate or cause inflammation.
(13:32):
Then they're not going to feelgood and that vicious cycle
starts again they jump on thescale and they don't feel good.
It's a vicious cycle.
So they're connected in manyways.
Now would the physical emotionsstart first, then the emotional
?
Not necessarily.
It could be either one.
They may have one versus theother, or they may have two and
(13:56):
that's a huge one.
We measure adrenalinsufficiency or activity.
We see if the adrenals arehighly active and how to address
that.
Hydration has a huge part ofemotional well-being and lack of
certain nutrients.
Also, when they're heavier, they feel heavy.
It's hard to get motivated toexercise, they don't feel good,
(14:19):
the exercising part gets shovedto the side because they don't
feel good, inflammation startsto accumulate, they get joint
pain and it's a vicious cycle.
If both of them work the same, the bottom line is they're not
going to feel good and can leadto other issues.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
You mentioned water.
Can you talk about thedifferences between alkaline
water and regular water andwhich people should be drinking?
It used to be.
There was one type of bottledwater.
Now we go in and there's amillion to choose from and you
know how does somebody figureout what's best for them?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Absolutely.
That goes back to how theirbody is.
Are they hydrated?
Are they absorbing waterproperly?
How much water retention dothey have?
We measure that with bodycomposition.
We look at intracellular toextracellular water.
Based on that, we decide whichdirection to go.
Of course, alkaline water ismore hydrating water.
(15:17):
You've got the alkaline, you'vegot the electrolyte water and
then you also have the regularwater, distilled water, purified
.
We will be able to tell themwhich water works best for them
in terms of hydration, becausesome people come in and they're
drinking so much water.
The more water they drink, themore bathroom visits they have.
(15:38):
They still feel thirsty andit's like oh my gosh, I can't
drink anymore.
Their lips are dry, they feeldry mouth and when that happens
it's like how much more can Idrink?
I cannot drink anymore.
They're in the bathroom all thetime because of water and
they're not drinking the rightwater.
It could be water resistance.
Their body's just flushing.
(15:59):
We look at these issues becausethat can trigger weight gain.
If they're dehydrated.
That's a marker for me to lookat, to make sure that they're
gaining muscle, they're losingweight, they're hydrated, their
skin is feeling better.
Most clients, if they have thatsituation of the water and they
don't know they're drinkingnormal water.
(16:21):
They don't know the differencesand I switched their water.
They feel this change and it'slike, it's fascinating.
It's just their face starts toglow.
It's amazing how, when you'rehydrated, how good you feel.
It's a very important part ofthis journey here.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Anything else you'd
like to speak to about long-term
weight maintenance and what youguys offer at LockedIn Wellness
?
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Here at LockedIn
Wellness.
What we focus on, yes, gettingperson to their goal weight, but
it's more and that's, I call it, the easy part.
Okay, but what we really here.
My goal is to help everyonemaintain their goal weight
without being on a diet.
It's a lifestyle change findingthe right stuff for their body
(17:14):
and enjoying it.
We should not be restricted atall times.
We should not be on a diet allthe time.
It's the change in lifestylefiguring out issues that causes
them you know the triggers andeliminating that.
And that is the key with ourplan here.
That's why we have so manyclients come in.
(17:36):
They want to put an end toyo-yo dieting.
The focus here is to help youavoid yo-yo dieting, is to help
you get to a maintenance planthat is suitable, easy to follow
forever for a long term, withtoo much fluctuation.
(17:58):
I mean, of course we allfluctuate two pounds up, two
pounds down, that's normal.
Nothing beats normalfluctuation of normal body.
But otherwise, this is where westart off and this is what we
target here and we focus on.
And, of course, course, whenclients come in, they learn so
much more about themselves andthat motivates them because they
(18:20):
know so much.
Now they know what to do ifthey feel different, if they
start to feel fatigue again, they have all the answers for
their bodies.
They can relate back tofiguring out what to do to help
with that or, you know, go backto saying, okay, what did I do
wrong that could have done thisor made me feel this way?
(18:41):
Usually they got it.
We teach everyone.
Of course, everybody'sdifferent, so each one person,
each individual here, has adifferent plan.
But each person learned theirbody like anyone else, and they
get to know their body, what thebest for them and how to keep
(19:05):
it optimal with optimal health.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
That's what we are
