Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place
where local businesses andneighbors come together.
Here's your host, Benjamin John.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Welcome back to the Good Neighbor Podcast.
Hey, are you in search of agood diabetes and thyroid
specialist?
Well, there might be someonecloser than you think.
Today I have the pleasure ofintroducing Ahmet Ergen over at
Diabetes, thyroid and HormoneCenter of the Treasure Coast.
How are you doing, ahmet?

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Good, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I'm doing fantastic.
Yes, sir, thank you for asking.
I'm very fascinated to learnmore about your company and for
the listeners in the communityto learn more about your company
.
So let's just start with thatTell us about this company.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, so let's just start with that.
Tell us about this company.
Yeah, so I'm a physician, I'man endocrinologist.
I specialize in diabetes, weight management and hormone
replacement therapy, for bothmen and women.
So my journey began around 15years ago when I left Turkey
shortly after medical school.
That was basically mycommitment to medical field, to

(01:05):
practice in the United States so, and I completed my residency
and fellowship at the ClevelandClinic, a period that basically
shaped much of my earlyprofessional life.
And then I decided to move toFlorida and, due to the warmer
climate and all that, that'sstuff that I like.
And then recently we openedthis Diabetes, thyroid and

(01:27):
Hormone Center of the TreasureCoast, where I am a private
practitioner.
I used to work for a corporate.
However, we made a fairly easytransition.
That is because we arecommitted to providing patient
centric, specialized careinstead of just being under the

(01:48):
dictation of a corporate.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Hmm, okay, wow, that's.
That's a fascinating.
I think you kind of answeredthe second question a little bit
, but I'm going to ask youanyways because I'm curious to
know if there's more to it howdid you get into this type of
business?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
did you get into this type of business so well, I'm
an endocrinologist, so Ibasically was fascinated with
the hormones and how theintricacies of hormones play a
huge role in the human body.
So I took that route after myinternal medicine residency.
I took that route after myinternal medicine residency and
then, well, obviously you haveto pick a job.
So I start working in thecorporate world and realize that

(02:32):
there are a lot of deficiencieswhere you know we can provide
much better care if you areindependent and actually
patients are aware of that andactually patients are aware of

(02:58):
that and they applauded the movewhen we decided to go private
practice, because everybodyrealized that how the current
health system we have in town isnot really meeting expectations
of many patients.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Very cool, I like that.
You got a lot of educationbehind you, it sounds like, and
a long journey to get to whereyou've come, it sounds like Okay
so what's a myth ormisconception that you've
typically seen in that industry?

Speaker 3 (03:18):
So we really see a lot of patients with
misconceptions, and that isbasically around the
misinformation that people findon Google, and that information

(03:39):
becomes their idea.
So it is just especially aboutthe diabetes and hormone
replacement therapy.
They hear so many things andthey come in with preconceived
notions.
They hear so many things andthey come in with preconceived
notions, again influenced fromthese unreliable online sources.
And nothing wrong with beingknowledgeable, but sometimes,
when that becomes apreconception, it becomes hard.
For example, when it comes toTRT for men or hormone

(04:00):
replacement therapy for women, men tend to underestimate the
risk.
Women tend to overestimate therisk.
However, the truth is kind offar from that.
When it comes to diabetesmanagement, people are scared of
doctors because they think thatthey are going to get insulin
when they walk into aspecialist's office, or they
have unrealistic expectations orunrealistic fears from what

(04:23):
they are getting into.
And my job is to basicallydispel those myths and provide
them with factual,evidence-based information and
so that they can make informeddecisions about their health.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Very nice.
So, yeah, it sounds like notonly have you identified the
misconceptions, but it's part ofyour job to deconstruct that
misconception and give them thereal, the proper education, if
you will, and the rightinformation.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
I like that.
Okay, so who are your targetcustomers and how do you attract
them?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Well, all clinic services are basically
attracting everyone dealing withdiabetes, thyroid issues,
thyroid nodules, hormonalimbalances.
The good thing is we haveestablished a solid reputation.
I've been in this town forseven years now and that
dedicated years of service whichnaturally attracts new patients

(05:14):
.
We also get referrals fromsatisfied patients and local
healthcare providers, from otherdoctors.
That is basically the backboneof our new patient population.
Typically.
We also have an activeengagement platforms.
I have a YouTube channel withover almost a million actually

(05:35):
not over yet, but almost amillion followers, and that
YouTube channel focuses ondiabetes, insulin resistance and
weight loss, and that is whatdraws interest from potential
patients who are seekingreliable and compassionate care
from us.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Very cool.
I like that.
Congratulations on thefollowers and being able to have
a platform to provide value onthere and answer questions and
give people that informationthat we were just talking about.
Thank you, thank you.
All right, so, outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Well, I'm a big fan of water sports.
We live in Florida Right, soyou can often find me jet skiing
, or, if it is windy, I go kitesurfing.
And, of course, I also try tocherish my time with my family.
I have a four-year-old and atwo-year-old.
We are at the beach if it is abeach weather and otherwise we

(06:31):
are trying to explore some localattractions with the family.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Very cool, sounds like a lot of fun, and I've
never done the kite surfing Ithink you called it.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
That is a challenging one.
Yeah, that requires a lot ofyears of dedication, and
learning curve is pretty steepthere, for sure.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Nice.
All right, I'm going to switchgears on you a little bit here,
so can you describe a hardshipor a life challenge that you've
went through and made youstronger?

Speaker 3 (07:02):
So the biggest challenge for me was moving to a
new country with, you know, limited resources from my end
and no established network.
So I came here basically with alot of uncertainty.
Three days after my medicalschool in Turkey, I decided to

(07:25):
be in the US and decided to makea career in the US.
So that was a lot of pressureon my end, because I burned the
bridges.
I knew that I was not going togo back.
Not that, you know, turkey isnot a bad country.
You know it's fairly developedand a modern country.
However, as you know, unitedStates is the best.

(07:45):
So, and if you feel like youdeserve better, you sometimes
move on to your life and seekfor the opportunities, and I
know this country provides theopportunities and makes the
dream come true.
So that is what was my biggestchallenge.
But everything, all my dreams, came true and that's why I'm

(08:07):
here today.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Very cool, Well, very inspiring story and again,
congratulations on coming out onthe other end and making
something really positive out ofthat situation.
Thank you All right.
So, uh, I'm at.
Please tell our listeners onething they should remember about
diabetes, thyroid and hormone.
