As a nurse educator with over 30 years in nursing, Professor Young-Cournoyer shares that it is okay to take a chance on engagement strategies while listening to student feedback and adjusting accordingly. For Young-Cournoyer, UDL provides multiple, flexible options to engage learners and make the content meaningful and relevant. Promoting inclusive and supportive classroom environments, Professor Young-Cournoyer explains how she has integrated UDL in her pediatric nursing course and the ways her students benefit from these UDL strategies. As one example, she describes how she used the Pecha Kucha presentation format to present information to support retrieval and distributed practice with the course content. She recalls when one of her students created her own Pecha Kucha based on Professor Young-Cournoyer’s example, used it as a personalized study tool, and presented her experience at a national conference. Overall, Professor Young-Cournoyer highlights that UDL allows for active and experiential learning in the classroom to prepare nursing students for clinical competencies in healthcare settings. Young-Cournoyer concludes with how she and her faculty colleagues collaborate on best UDL practices by sharing examples of study skill strategies and engagement activities in the classroom.
