Dr. Randy Laist sees teaching English as an opportunity to help students tell their stories from their hearts, to learn and grow. Teaching secondary school, Dr. Laist saw working with a diverse group of students as challenging and that held true at the university. UDL is a framework that helps instructors design inclusive curriculum, so all students learn. UDL gave Dr. Laist a language to describe what was happening in his classroom and provided terms that helped build inclusive activities. The adaptive, flexible mindset of UDL helps instructors when students challenge their teachers in learning. Dr. Laist mentioned Zeke, a student who gained access to learning through building on his strengths. Zeke developed tools for future classes, while Dr. Laist learned how to make his writing classes more accessible. Students will need to learn to problem solve and be flexible in their approach and UDL enhances that. Dr. Laist speaks to the flexibility and adaptability of UDL and challenges the educator to be attentive and reflective to the needs of students.
