(00:01):
We have, as it seems tome, a very curious sense of reality,
or rather, perhaps I should say, a striking addiction to irreality.
How is it possible one cannot butask to raise a child without loving the
child. How is it possible tolove the child if one does not know

(00:22):
who one is? How is itpossible for the child to grow up the
child is not loved. Children cansurvive without money, or security, or
safety or things, but they arelost if they cannot find a loving example.
For only this example can give thema touchstone for their lives, thus
far and no further. This iswhat the father must say to the child.

(00:48):
If the child is not told wherethe limits are, he will spend
the rest of his life trying todiscover them. James Baldwin, Nothing Personal,
nineteen sixty four. The Battle andBeyond Beyonce is nice. I'm gonna
keep it flat is on the line. Chicken have a lot, so grab

(01:27):
all right. Vibes are right,Ambiance is right. This is the bottle
of a twenty twenty one Cabernet Savignofrom the Come Colombia Valley in Washington State.
I'm not gonna tell you what thebottle is and I'll tell you why
in a second. But it's auh, this is I haven't had a
wine that that like really changed mypalette. I would say, ask like

(01:52):
what I'm like, I'm gonna getobsessed with this region a very long time,
very very long time. It's beena minute. Then thank you for
this recommendation to my good friend, you know who you are. It's got
this like easy drinkable fresh, justbeautiful. Wow. It just opens up
so well. On the nose you'llget red fruit maybe leaving a little bit

(02:17):
of black fruit like I'm thinking likea BlackBerry or like a like a pomegranate,
like that sort of floral, beautifulsmell. And then on the palette
it's got like this cinnamon sort oflike baking spice, like I think of
like baking a maybe like a BlackBerrypie. On the palate, so it's

(02:39):
got notes of like that wafting oflike baked bread flour, but also like
very very fruitful it and it's it'sit's amazing. This bottle WI run you
about thirty five dollars if you canguess what it is. You'll never probably
guess what it is, and that'sfine. That's totally okay because I'm gatekeeping
today. I'm gatekeeping today like y'allgatekeep this show. I'm gatekeeping today like

(03:06):
y'all gatekeeper. The fact that youlisten to this podcast, because I'll be
honest. I'll be honest. Ain'tnobody sharing this shit. Ain't have been
no post, no shout outs ina very very long time. And I
know that y'all will post shit youlike more, certainly of people you don't

(03:29):
know, which has always been likemy biggest gripe. Once I started this,
and once I became a creator myselfand started putting myself out there as
a I think artists is a littletough for me to put myself into,
but I do. I do putthings out in the world, and that's
what a creator is. And y'allwill rap motherfuckers that y'all don't know over

(03:52):
anyone you do, and it's crazyand that's absolutely not how I am.
Y'all know this. I could sayone word first names, y'all know exactly
what I'm talking about because I've talkedabout these creators, these artists for years,
to Kara, Nico, Grace,Yona, people that I've interacted with,
I know that are creators. Y'allknow who they are. Some gatekeeping

(04:15):
the wine. I'll continue to gatekeep the wine until I feel like there's
some reciprocity around here. Y'all gonnaget this podcast. It tastes like y'all
want to know what it really tasteslike, though, even though you don't
know what kind of wine it isor what wine it is besides the fact
that it's the twenty one Cabernets helpingy'all from the Columbia Valley, Washington State,
it tastes like it tastes like notneeding to rely on anything but yourself

(04:45):
and feeling good about that, feelinggreat in that space. I should also
say this is another episode of apodcast called Grab a Glasses about your truly
Dave Thomas Bender on his DT putYour Money in ma motherfucker Boys, also
known as the one and only BigBrocoli and there's only one. It is

(05:08):
me, It is I Well.I would love to see more shares and
more Tell a friend to tell afriend. I'm so glad that you're here
listening. That's more than half thebattle. So thank you so much for
your listenership. Don't let it seemlike, I'm not appreciative. I'm just
pulling your coat tail a little bit. We got a quick message to get

(05:30):
to Let's not even take a break. Let's just jump right in, shall
we. We spent some time weneeded something for the house, and on
a whim, just decided we're gonnago out. These days, that takes
a little bit more effort because eachone of us has to get ready.

(05:54):
We have to get the baby readyto go. We got to make sure
the diaperbacks out everything it needs,we got to make sure that cards at
the right temperature, et cetera,et cetera. It's not just like,
hey, let's throw on some clothesand get out the door. Takes a
little bit more time, which isfine. We also had a extra piece

(06:14):
of motivation because we were given agift for our baby boy, which was
a hat a cap. Whenever we'reout and it's sunny, which it's rare
that it's sunny here in the PacificNorthwest, his face is always being hit
by the sun, really his eyes, and so he's never really able to

(06:39):
enjoy being able to see anything becausewe have to cover him in the stroller.
He's old enough now where he's ableto hold his head up more.
So I want to be able tohold him in my arms, or Veronica
wants to be able to hold himin her arms. But that's hard to
do when it's sunny because the sunis just gonna literally beat down his eyes.
Not something we want. So wewere giving this hat. So that

(06:59):
was like, we got to gethim out in this hat. So we
ran our errand we grabbed our thingthat we needed, which was perfect.
We found it perfect timing. We'relike, let's spend a little bit more
time out in the shopping area justwalking around. So we did that and
found a nice bench to sit onthe place we were. The area that

(07:19):
we're in was very, very busy, which was cool because it allowed our
baby boy to just kind of takein a space that's crowded. And of
course he's drawing so much attention tohimself because he is just as handsome as
he wants to be. And it'shappened a few times while we've been out,

(07:41):
but people just approach, and asa parent, as a protector,
anybody who's just walking up on you, you have to be wary of.
I would say maybe not even asa parent, you should be wary of
anybody who's walking up on you, period. But because we have a beautiful
baby boy who's a smiley and gigand just full of life as he can

(08:01):
be, he just draws attention. So a woman comes up to us when
she strikes up a conversation asking first, of course, how old is he,
which we reply how old he is, And of course, as it
often happens, I think, mostlybecause of our energy, but also because
Portland is somewhat of a very friendlyplace, we try to have a conversation
with this woman. We find outall about the fact that her daughter just

(08:24):
had twins. They were born intwenty five weeks. They were in the
NICU. The nie cues what theysay, I believe, and one of
them is out of the hospital, the other one's still there, and we're
just talking about just the joy ofall of that and the hardship of all
of that, et CETERA very verynice woman, super super cool. But

(08:45):
she said something that stuck out tome that I've talked about on this show
before that we've recognized. The mostviral real that I've ever done on Instagram
sort of talks about this. Shesaid, and I quote, when you
have a baby, you just finddifferent things to focus on and the smallest

(09:09):
things that bring you joy. Youfind different things to focus on and the
smallest things that bring you joy.And it hit me in that moment,
like the only reason we're outside enjoyingthe weather, outside of the fact that
we needed to run an errand wealways need to run an error, let's

(09:31):
be honest, is the fact thatwe were gifted this hat, this cap.
I believe it was from Amazon. It wasn't anything crazy or anything special,
even though it's specially to us.Because it was gifted to us,
We were given this hat, andbecause we were given this hat, we
wanted to get our son outside sothat he could soak up the sun.
And that was the highlight of myweek, was seeing my son in this

(09:56):
cap soaking up the sun and havinga good time, something totally different that
I've never focused on before, andthat small little thing is what brought me
joy. So I'm curious as youlisten to grab a glass, as you

(10:18):
take in the perspective that I shareweek in and week out, and as
you hopefully potentially share these messages withpeople you love and people you care about,
what was the one thing this week, the small thing, the different
thing that brought you joy. Itis no secret what James Baldwin's work means
to me. No secret a manwho died before I was even born,

(10:43):
but has inspired a great many thoughtsand works that I'm currently and in the
past put out episodes of the showPerspectives, points of conversation, and things
that some of you know about, things that some of you don't and won't.

(11:03):
But that quote I read before theepisode began again, it was children
can survive without money or security,or safety or things, but they are
lost if they cannot find a lovingexample. For only this example can give
them a touchstone for their lives.Again from his essay Nothing Personal, written

(11:26):
in nineteen sixty four, As Iask you, what are some of the
small or different things that you focuson that are just beautiful to you,
especially as you think about it?From this week for those of you who
are parents, or for those ofyou who want to be parents, or
for those of you that have anysort of tutelage for someone younger, I

(11:48):
just felt like that quote. God, it just connected so well because I'm
hoping, for instance, that myson won't need a new hat to go
outside and enjoy the sun, orif he does get a new hat,
that he realizes that it's not aboutthe thing that he has, or the
money that we had to go runthis errand or the car that we had

(12:11):
to get there or whatever. It'sjust about the fact that he has the
space and the presence to do soand be outside, be alive, and
be present. Hopefully you can sharethat and you think about that as you
think of that one thing this weekthat brought you joy. Much love to

(12:31):
the creators, no matter your flavor, My God forever being our favorite.
Cheers everybody, Love y'all, thanksfor listening.
