Confidence—Will We Trust Him? Luke 11:1–13 WATCH US ON YOUTUBE LIVE @ http://www.youtube.com/gracechurch-slus/live I The Basis of Our Confidence in Prayer A. The God We Pray To 1 God is Father Jesus teaches us to pray to God as “Father.” Old Testament: God as Father (15 times, never in prayer). Gospels: God as Father (165 times, almost always by Jesus). Privilege: We approach God with intimacy and reverence. 2 We Are Children Jesus contrasts earthly fathers with our heavenly Father. Earthly fathers: flawed, limited wisdom, imperfect love. Heavenly Father: good, infinite wisdom, perfect love. Confidence: God always does what is best for His children. 3 Trusting God’s Character Prayer is not about controlling God. Faith is not about quantity but about trusting God’s goodness. Our certainty rests in God’s character, not our prayers. God Answers Better Than We Can Ask Sometimes God’s answers differ from our requests. Biblical examples: Jesus in Gethsemane, testimonies of faith (James Montgomery Boyce, George Muller). God’s glory and our good are always His aim. II. The Gift He Gives Us A. The Holy Spirit The Spirit Indwells Us When we pray, God gives us Himself—the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the source of comfort, guidance, wisdom, power. The Spirit Empowers Us Old Testament: Spirit in creation, prophecy, leadership. New Testament: Spirit in Jesus, the Church, believers. The Spirit enables every aspect of Christian life. The Spirit Pleads for Us Romans 8:26–28: The Spirit intercedes for us according to God’s will. The Spirit transforms our prayers and our lives. III. Application & Response Confidence in Prayer: Trust in God’s goodness, wisdom, and love. Recognize the privilege of calling God “Father.” Rely on the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. Pray for God’s will and glory above all. Invitation: Express trust in God through prayer and worship. Seek the Spirit’s work in personal and corporate prayer. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
